Interesting Read.......2007-10-03
This was a good book from beginning to finish. The characters are so real and believeable I'm sure they are related to me (smile). This is a story of your average American family with all the love, issues, and differences so many of us share. I appreciate the writer not sugar-coating the issues and being so honest. Reading this book will cause you to take a long hard look at our own family situation and to reflect, respect, value and hopefully appreciate who we are and what we have. There are places in the book that will lead you to believe that there isnt alot of love but keep reading it shows just how we as families can really be selfish, mean, hateful and disrepectful, but it never fails to restore your faith that "Love" overcomes everything and thats what God is "Love".!!!
Boring.......2007-06-12
It took me weeks to finally finish this book. It was boring and a bit over dramatic.
UNBELIEVABLE AND FORGETABLE.......2006-11-15
I had the misfortune of attempting to read this book. I say attempting because I was not able to finish it. After chapter 6, I was already bored with it and I found myself doing what I usually do when I have lost interest in a book and that is I started skimming it. I was disgusted with the constant bickering and juvenile behavior of the sisters, Uncle Thomas' speech patterns, the constant crying and the general lack of plot development. It was clearly one of the worst books ever. I didn't care about any of the characters and had no interest in the ending. How can a person leave that much money to that many people? I could not wrap my mind around it.
"Dysfunction At It's Worst".......2006-07-09
I have to say that this book was unique. The men in the book were strong shoulders for their women to depend on. Now the women...if you wanna call them that, were nothing but a bunch of ignorant, no-class having idiots. If it was possible to reach inside this novel, I would have kicked Collette's you-know-what myself!!! Dawn and Nina were the only ones with some sense. I can't say too much about Glynda and Renee. The plot-line was predictable and what I didn't care for at all was the way the writer had Uncle Thomas talking...it was embarrassing. The constant bickering was working my nerves too. If anything, Nina's the one who should be pissed because she was born 3 years BEFORE the other Naylor sisters. She didn't have the benefit of growing up around her sisters because her father was too embarrassed with what he had done. I guess that proves that the great Edward Naylor wasn't so perfect after all. This book was a trip.
A Book To Which We Could Relate.......2006-06-23
When our book club discussed this book, we realized that we made personal connections to the characters, which really heightened our perspectives. In our own families, we could identify relatives who emulated the characters represented in this book. Not to mention, we all had witnessed, at some time or another, the "drama" associated with African American funerals. We did, however, state that the plot seemed a little drawn out in the middle; the drama seemed to linger and become cyclical. Overall though, Teachers in Touch enjoyed the book.

Delightfull.......2006-08-11
Oh I Loved this book, it was a nice light read with two worthy people who fall in love. Justin and Evie were splendid together. I loved all the little things in this book that made it so great.
Justin is such a worthy hero. Smart, handsome , slightly dishevled, funny - you get the point.
Evie is just a wonderfull, insecure, sweet, smart and in love with Justin but thinking shes not pretty enough.
I love the scene where they are in the bedroom in front of the mirror and Justin is explaining how ravishing he thinks Evie is.
The the scene at the dinner party where he does not recognize her with her new look. So sweet!
This was a wonderfull book I highley recommend reading it.
Pretty Good... although kinda slow... .......2006-06-27
This book was given 3 stars because it was very slow, and the characters always flirted, but it never led anywhere, and the first kiss was chapters further than what I would have thought. Other than those things, the book was good.
When 15-year-old Evelyn interrupts what she takes to be a tryst between Justin and a prominent diplomat's wife, she exacts a note of debt from the ruffled 23-year-old in return for her silence. Ten years later, Evie, who is filling in for her aunt as a society wedding planner, comes calling with her note. She needs Justin's familial estate for the wedding of the season. He agrees reluctantly, complaining it will interfere with his bird-watching he's an ornithologist on the tail of the elusive Bubo Formosa Plorimus (Most Beautiful Owl) but in truth, the nuptials will provide an excellent cover for his espionage activities. Far from the frivolous ladies' man Evie thinks he is, Justin is really a spy, but his latest mission to hide a "diabolical machine" being shipped to him by his handler may put them both in danger.
they don't give out those RITA awards for nothing..........2006-02-24
I just read "Bridal Favors" back to back with "McClairen's Isle: The Passionate One" - and frankly, I am amazed that the same person wrote them both. McClairen's Isle was so dark and intense; Bridal Favors is full of light and air and cheer. Brockway writes both sorts with, apparently, equal aplomb.
I totally adored Justin and Evelyn. They both stand out as individuals; Justin's glib tongue is endlessly amusing and Evelyn's determination and practicality are so poignantly woven in with her desire to please and vulnerability. They're both fundamentally good people, too, also independent and responsible.
The ensemble is just delightful. Beverly the butler, Merry the dressmaker, Stow the spymaster...there's so much quirk and wit and froth, but at the same time, the plot is never thin and Justin is a pretty believable spy.
This was a *fun* read - I smiled and laughed all through. I have to say, I am quite impressed by Brockway. I think I'm going to have to read all her other books now, too.
One of my favorite Brockways.......2006-02-05
This book was so much fun! The verbal sparring between Justin and Evie had me laughing out loud, as well as Justin's misogynistic, ever-suffering butler Beverly. But humor is not the only reason why I appreciate this book as much as I do. I absolutely fell in love with Justin and Evie--they are both such great characters. He is so adorably unwolfish, with his chameleon wit and ability to see beyond Evie's physical defenses. Evie is a wonderful heroine; I think many women can relate to her. She believes herself to be physically unattractive, but she has become a highly-competent, intelligent woman nevertheless through a staunch sense of honesty and strength of character. Justin was truly a hero, in that he finally forced Evie to see past her self-image, and to realize that she has worth beyond being competent and intelligent. And finally, Bubo Formosa Plurimus, Minor...that will always get me, everytime.
glory of nobility tarnished somewhat in late Victorian era.......2005-05-16
Upon reading a book of this caliber, I regret all the 5 stars which have gone before -
Squandering spangles upon novels which have been less decorated that I might fully impress upon you, the reader, this tomes glorious worth!!
Young Evie encounters Justin first at her parents houseparty, launching her older sister. Enterprising lass that she is, upon bumping into him emerging from an older (married) ladies room she strikes a deal of silence which will leave him in her debt.
She makes other unfortunate entrances also at this houseparty, and overhears some unkind ladies disparging her looks to the extent that she feels she must be terribly ugly - golem like in fact. This instance shapes her to the point that when she seeks out Justin 10 years later, Evie has entirely lost interest in her appearance and dresses in most a most utilitarian style.
Calling upon the old IOU, Evie requests usage of Justins ancestral home, in order to host a wedding for a client. (Various strategems are imployed here, to make this necessary - Evie has taken on the family business which pads their modest income).
In a well employed change from the much travelled theme of Regency England, the story is set in late Victorian times, where the glory of nobility has tarnished somewhat and the chaperonage is not quite as strict.
Justin is soon revealed as a secret agent, and there are all sorts of comings and goings in the night which add to the atmosphere and create many an interesting byline.
The delightfully entertaining exchanges between our leads make for delicious banter, whilst the tender love making scenes ought to be an inspiration to all writers. Without being crude, the author graciously depicts wonderfully sensual moments and brings sizzle AND the butterflies to the scenes which for once I find ENHANCE the book rather than bringing the romance down.
The first Connie Brockway novel I have read, and most certainly not the last, I felt it held up to the standards set by Eloisa James, possibly surpassed a Stephanie Laurens, and was a delightful successor to Patricia Veryan and Loretta Chase.
Having most recently read Jo Beverleys My Lady Notorious which had a promising beginning only to sink a great deal with salicious raunchiness midway, Bridal Favors swims and sizzles through challenges which others fail.

Book Description
Fourteen strangers came to Delmak-O. Thirteen of them were transferred by the usual authorities. One got there by praying. But once they arrived on that planet whose very atmosphere seemed to induce paranoia and psychosis, the newcomers found that even prayer was useless. For on Delmak-O, God is either absent or intent on destroying His creations.

Keeps you guessing.......2007-06-14
Thirteen people get their desired transfers to a new space colony, but they soon find themselves in a very dire situation after losing all communication and means of transportation to leave the planet. Add that these people have no idea what they're even supposed to do on this planet as colonists with the fact that most (if not all) of them are seriously disturbed and you've got quite an unpredictable story. With death hitting people left and right, Dick creates his usual surreal atmosphere, making you wonder about what's really going on. The chapter summaries are also completely unrelated to the chapters, a sign of things to come. I found the book kind of slow at first, but once death started dealing blows, it got a lot more interesting as Dick's style really came through. The ending was also certainly surprising. Dick introduces a lot of interesting ideas about reality, spirituality, and state of mind that left me pondering. Though the characters aren't especially well developed, this book is to be read more for the unpredictable ride. This isn't Dick's best, but it's still an interesting and easy read.
A twisted existential sci-fi masterpiece.......2007-02-07
"A Maze of Death" is about 13 psychologically unsound people stuck on a mysterious world with each other for no apparent reason. More reminiscent of Sartre's "No Exit" than television's "Lost," this book is a brilliant masterpiece about humans and their relationships with each other and their relationship to their god(s). It's a must read for fans of both psychological and philosophical science fiction.
What is the Maze?.......2007-01-31
Maze of Death is similar to Ubik in theme and plot. Released only a year after the better-known novel Maze seems slightly derivative of Ubik. Overall though I think Maze is much better than Ubik. Ubik may be considered a classic but for me it was downright hard to read at certain points. Maze is much more cohesive and is an enjoyable read.
Maze offers a weird mish-mash theology that seems to have a heavy Jungian influence in contrast to his usual Gnostic leanings. I usually enjoy Dick's "novel" theological speculations, but not this time. This was my least favorite aspect of the novel.
Maze has the usual Dickian themes of paranoia and dystopia, but this may be his darkest novel. Maze touches on several themes that seem reminiscent of and may have influenced The Matrix and Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Like most of PKD's novels it is 20-30 years ahead of its time.
A Maze of Death.......2006-07-03
Fourteen strangers have been gathered on the mysterious planet of Delmak-O, arriving in one-way space pods without any hope of returning. They find a desolate landscape with only a few hodgepodge building already starting to decay. An orbital satellite is supposed to beam down the instructions for their mysterious mission, but, as usual, things don't go as planned. Meanwhile, the very atmosphere of the world they live on is starting to have strange psychological effects, and that, on top of the microscopic flying cameras and the mysterious Tench that can duplicate any object, are setting up a plot that will leave everyone's head spining.
"A Maze of Death" is one of those PKD novels where everything comes together as if by magic. The plot works, the characters work, and the series of twist-endings work as well as you could possibly hope. Dick controls the story tightly enough that we never forget who the characters are or grow frustrated by seemingly irrelevant diversions, as in lesser novels like "Counter-Clock World".
Lost in the Surreal World of PKD (A Maze of Death) .......2006-04-13
The table of contents for 'Maze of Death' includes old fashioned chapter summaries, but they are incredibly inaccurate, a pretty good indication that things are not as they appear to be. The characters in Maze are lost in the surreal world of PKD. Many reviewers criticize PKD for two dimensional characters and his writing which wavers between excellence and sloppiness, however the really great thing about SF is the fantastic ideas and PKD has these in spades. Fourteen characters marooned on Delmak-O where nightmarish happenings are the norm, and reality, if there is any reality here, may be even worse.
Book Description
On the afternoon of October 5, 2003, in Alaska's Katmai National Park, one or more brown bears killed and ate Timothy Treadwell, a well-known wildlife celebrity, and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard. This frightening and chilling story immediately captured worldwide media attention and ignited a firestorm of controversy. Death in the Grizzly Maze is the compelling account of Treadwell's intense life and dramatic death. Author Mike Lapinski chronicles Treadwell's rise from self-described alcoholic loser to popular grizzly-bear advocate, and he delves into the troubling issues raised by a new breed of wildlife celebrities.
Customer Reviews:
Fact, rationalization or apology?.......2006-09-01
Although this book cannot be tagged the Anti-Treadwell story, it represents the viewpoints of many professional biologists employed by Alaska and/or the federal gov. It is important to know both sides, and well worth your while to read this account. It may even explain some of the influences on Treadwell's death, although I am sure no one intended that. It is almost a rationalization offered in place of an apology. Go ahead - read it.
Death in the Grizzly Maze.......2006-08-24
I had watched the film on Timothy Treadwell's life and was very interested in reading more about what happened. I ordered this book hoping to learn more, which I did. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in both sides of the story. Very well written.
Far Reaching.......2006-06-17
This book is pretty far reaching. Obviously the author came into the book with preconceived judgments. It is less a book about Treadwell and more a book about Lapinski and his views on everything from psychology to hunting. There are great materials out there that provide a balanced account of the Treadwell story, this is not one of them. The author over dramatizes situations to his advantage and repeats his views over and over again as if to convince the reader he is right.
The author tries to be subtle about his distaste for New Age ideas and animal rights activism, but it is evident throughout the book. He portrays the people who loved Treadwell and the way they choose to honor his memory as silly and those who object to Treadwell as enlightened. He tries to illustrate his understanding of Treadwell by comparing the adrenaline rush of killing a wild animal with that of getting close to one that is alive. This kind of lack of insight is evident throughout the book.
Lapinski manages to blame Treadwell for everything except global warming in this book including making Treadwell responsible for bear haters hating bears more and for bear lovers engaging in risky behaviors. He also leans towards making Treadwell responsible for Amie Huguenard's death. She was a 37 year old, well educated outdoor enthusiast. It was not her first time at the park with Treadwell. She had also just left and chose to come right back a few days before she was killed. I think it dishonors her memory to portray her as a love struck girl not capable of making her own decisions or deciding what risks she was willing to take.
The author finds nothing good in Treadwell's legacy and if you are one of the people who were touched by him, then you are just one of those animal-crazy eco people. In the end it is almost amusing to see this author, a hunter who has written books on hunting, taking a dead man to task for getting two bears killed.
Certainly a critical look a Treadwell requires an analysis of his mistakes, but it also requires an objective outlook that this author just does not have.
good read.......2006-03-17
This book is interesting. However, I found it a bit too negative on Treadwell. Also, he never even interviews Jewel Palovak, saying that she would not be interviewed due to his being a bear hunter. The other Maze book however, the Grizzly Maze, does interview Jewel and he is also a former bear hunter. More research, please.
Timothy Treadwell, a gentle man who truely loved and cared for all wild creatures.......2006-02-23
To many humans Timothy Treadwells story may seem "out there and crazy". The fact that Timothy loved the bears and other wild animals so much most probably seems nuts to most humans..I know, as I am a wildlife rehabilitator, I know what many people honestly think of wild animals and those who try to help them. Timothy enjoyed being with the bears and fox and he enjoyed learning about their ways of life as well as educate the public.Timothy protected not only Grizzly Bears but other wild animals. There are people however, who thought that Timothy may have done harm to the Grizzlys by allowing them to trust him.To be imprinted. Timothy felt so close to these animals..he could not help it.
Being a wildlife rehabilitator myself,I know for a fact that the wild animals seem only to imprint on their caretaker and not other humans. So, I am certain that the Grizzly Bears only trusted Timothy. Unfortunaty, the one bear who Timothy could not earn trust from is the one who killed him. But one should understand that the only reason this Grizzly killed Timothy is because this Grizzly was caught and hurt in the past by other humans.
Only those people who truely love animals such as Timothy did can understand Timothy and love this film. They will be able to actually put themselves in Timothy's place. Timothy learned from and taught us all so much about the Grizzly world. Timothy gave us such such wonderful Grizzly Bear footage and photos. Something no other human has done.
Timothy lived the last 13 years of his life loving what he did and frustrated with the system and it's disrespect for all wild animals.
Timothy, as horrible his end was...died doing what he loved and would never ever want to see any harm done to his beloved Grizzly's.
This film is one I can see many times and never tire of.
Timothy's love for animals and his sense of humor shown in the film are priceless.
Thank you for this film and thank you dear Timothy.

An excellent resource for worship leaders, pastors and lay members.......2007-01-03
I have read many good books on praise and worship. However, I rate this one at the top of the list. It is very easy to comprehend and practical. The additional workbook and/or video can assist one better in teaching a class over a short period of time. There are lessons in the workbook with questions at the end of each chapter. I have taught from this book for years as my main resource and used other books and supplements. At any rate, it is excellent as a stand alone or with its other tools.
Nothing Better.......2000-03-29
This is an awesome book. If you want to know what Praise & Worship is and why we do it Read this Book. If you want to know how to live a lifestyle of a worshiper... read this book. This book biblically explains a lot of misconceptions about Praise and Worship.
This book is a MUST READ for all christians.

One of the most practial guides for leaders in the Church.......1999-01-02
After more than a dozen years Exploring Worship remains the standard for many Bible colleges and fellowships all over the world, as a text of understanding the dynamics of the worship movement and how worship leaders, teams and pastors can relate with one another to usher the people of God into His presence. Exploring Worship, written right in the midst of the most significant period of time in church music since Charles Wesley, serves as a guide and practical tool to move the team from simply singing songs to encountering the presence of the Lord! For this reason, along with many others, we have chosen to use Exploring Worship and its companion workbook, as a primary text in our worship institute. If you were to read just one book on this subject, this should be the one! Exploring Worship is destined to be a classic in the Church.
