Book Description

Set in Paris on the eve of World War II and sizzling with love, anger, and revenge, She Came to Stay explores the changes wrought in the soul of a woman and a city soon to fall. Although Franoise considers her relationship with Pierre an open one, she falls prey to jealousy when the gamine Xavire catches his attention. The moody young woman from the countryside pries her way between Franoise and Pierre, playing up to each one and deviously pulling them apart, until the only way out of the triangle is destruction.

4 out of 5 stars Existential relationships are never easy........2004-10-08

Relationships are never easy, even for intellectuals like Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. Set in pre-World War II Paris, de Beauvoir's first novel, SHE CAME TO STAY (1954) provides a fictional portrait of her unconventional relationship with her lifelong partner, Sartre, and her protege, Bianca Bienenfeld. Their menage a trois began in 1938, when de Beauvoir introduced Bienenfeld (aka Bianca Lamblin) to her partner/lover, Sartre, who was thirty-three, and ended in 1940 when, at de Beauvoir's encouragement, Sartre abandoned Lamblin on the eve of WWII. Although SHE CAME TO STAY may be read as a love story examining the complex dilemmas posed by love (demonstrating existential relationships are perhaps easier in theory than in reality) and the destructive powers of relationships, it also succeeds on a more philosphical level.

SHE CAME TO STAY tells the story of Francoise, her lover, Pierre, and Xaviere, an emotionally unstable young woman from Rouen who comes between them. The novel demonstrates that a relationship can lead not only to ecstasy, but also to a personal, life-changing crisis. The romantic threesome de Beauvoir creates for Francoise sears her protagonist "like a sharp burn" (p. 207). Francoise becomes angry, insanely jealous, and then disillusioned with her dream of "one life, one work, one love" (p. 233) with Pierre. Eventually, her relationship leads her to experience life without meaning: an existential "abyss of nothingness" (p. 291). "It was like death," de Beauvior writes, "a total negation, an eternal absence . . . the entire universe was was engulfed in it, and Francoise, forever excluded from the world, was herself dissolved in this void" (p. 291). By the end of the novel, Xaviere is destroyed by an act of revenge, and Francoise is alone and estranged from Pierre.

While SHE CAME TO STAY may not measure up to the writing standards de Beauvoir later set with THE MANDARINS and THE SECOND SEX, it is nevertheless a powerful novel. Readers interested in reading more about de Beauvoir's real-life triangle with Sartre and Lamblin may consider reading Lamblin's memoir, A DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR, in which Lamblin offers her first-hand account of her unconventional relationship with the two French existentialists.

Francoise and Pierre Labrousse are a couple. Xaviere is a student from Rouen. Xaviere's real life has yet to begin. Pierre suggests that perhaps he and Francoise can help Xaviere manage to live in Paris.

When Xaviere comes to live in the same hotel as Francoise, she spends much of her time alone in her room. After the rehearsal of Pierre's play, Pierre and Francoise go to a bar by habit. When Pierre becomes interested in a person he is able to carry on a conversation for hours with angelic ferocity. This is part of his generosity. Francoise persuades Xaviere to accompany her to the bar.

An example of Xaviere's thinking is Xaviere holds that concerts are a ridiculous convention since it is silly to arrange to hear music at a certain time. Pierre speaks of his confounded mania for making a conquest. While Pierre is acting Francoise is able to work on her novel. After Xaviere moves to Paris Francoise finds that she has little free time.

At a party Francoise and Pierre's sister Elisabeth view the actresses as having an embalmed youth to their appearances. Francoise believes that the life of Pierre and hers that is perfect as to form is beginning to lose its substance. She becomes ill and has to move to a nursing home for care. The night of the New Year's Eve party Pierre had offered to give up Xaviere and now it seems to Francoise that Xaviere and Pierre are in love.

When Francoise and Pierre are in the presence of Xaviere she becomes upset because she, Xaviere, feels her feelings are being dissected. Since Pierre and Francoise are supposed to have a perfect love, she, Francoise, becomes annoyed when Pierre and Xaviere bring their love to her attention. Francoise endeavors to focus on everyone as part of a trio. Elisabeth thinks that Xaviere is a sly fickle girl. Francoise comes to the realization that watching Xaviere so closely is squalid.

Both Pierre and Francoise seek to influence Xaviere and she suffers from their attention. In the end Francoise chooses to be alone, Pierre is in the service, (it is 1940 or so and the war is going on), and Xaviere is estranged. (Alternatively Francoise and Xaviere end up dead.)

This is the novel, I have read, in which the author worked out her ideas about freedom, existentialism, and in turn transmitted them to Jean Paul Sartre for philosophical exposition. I have also read that situations such as the one described here gave rise to ethical complaints from parents causing De Beauvoir to lose her license to teach. The book has always been too schematic for my tastes as fiction qua fiction, but one cannot help being intrigued by the historical notoriety of the book.

3 out of 5 stars A riveting study of jealousy.......2000-07-18

This is Simone's first published novel and writing this book removed her own writer's block and enabled her to go on to win the Prix Goncourt and, of course, write "The Second Sex." While it is hardly "feminist," after all, the main woman character has an intellectually intimate but apparently sexless relationship with a man who rules her life, it is a woman's book. How many women, involved in a triangle, have wanted to eliminate their rival? While Simone left her real life rival unharmed, her alter ego Francoise murders her rival. Based on the trio well-known to readers of Simone's memoirs, this is a flawed but still enjoyable work. First of all, it is a little too quotidian. We know that Simone was a work-a-holic who parceled out her day into writing and confering with J-P, but that sort of lifestyle is too accurately portrayed in this novel. Second, there seems to be a basic flaw in the "plot," that arises from the basic situation of the Sartre-de Beauvoir shared life and that is while both Francoise and Pierre can excuse their own sexual explorations, when their protege Xaviere exercises her own FREEDOM OF CHOICE (remember that slogan from the 60s? Not to choose is to choose? That was Sartre.), her elders discipline her. Why does Simone, a woman with impeccable philosophical credentials, contradict her own ontology? At the same time, this book accurately portrays some very real human emotions.

4 out of 5 stars a serious study of emotion and reason.......2000-03-24

While _The Mandarins_ is her most popular novel, _She Came to Stay_ offers another powerful writing of Simone De Beauvoir. She draws a delicate sketch of relationship between three characters of Francoise, Pierre and Xaviere, and reveals the complicated role of "reason" and "emotion" of an individual in his/her relations with other individuals. The story unfolds as supposedly ideal relationship between Francoise and Pierre based on "reason" is interfered by Xaviere, whose expressive nature both enchants and threatens them. They attempt an ambitious idea of building a "trio" in love, but all three end up experiencing emotional pains and intellectual confusions. It appears in a most dramatic way for Francoise, whose well-controlled jealousy and hatred throughout the book burst out as killing Xaviere in the end. Part I reads rather slow with a little too much details on Francoise's hidden emotions and thoughts and indirect descriptions of the psychological status of two other characters, but in Part II everything tightens up as the story focuses on Francoise's thoughts and actions. This is an impressive piece that makes a serious study of emotion and reason by almost "purely" focusing on human relations.

When this story opens the two main characters are watching a woman fellate her husband.
So far so good, as this story unfolds we find out that the "neighborhood" has only a few homes and they all swing with each other and there are specific rules.
The couple that has just entered the neighborhood is torn: the girlfriend is interested, her lover less so. But they go ahead and submit their application to join the "club."

I like Ms. Midway's work, That's What Friends are For, is one of my favorite books; this book, however, was not.

After awhile I grew tired of the endless sex and parties, the bits that did not have any sex involved were few and far between, and there were characters I simply could not connect with.
In the end it was all foreplay with little to stimulated the mind and the culmination was anti-climactic.

But if that is what you are looking for, then this is THE book.
I know I am probably one of the few that felt this way, so I will say, if you do go ahead and get it, then enjoy!

Fascination Street is exactly that, fascinating! I couldn't put this book down. It is wonderfully hot and erotic. You'll need a fan and something cold to drink while reading. The main characters are Zora and Grant, an interracial couple(BW/WM). They have just moved into a new house on Fascination street. They immediately witness some very unusual public displays of affection by their neighbors. Much to Zora and Grant's surprise, all the neighborhood couples are swingers. They(more Grant than Zora)have to determine whether this is the lifestyle for them or if they need to leave Fascination street. While they are deciding, some wonderfully hot sex scenes take place. Your every fantasy is probably displayed within the pages of this book. This one's a keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Fascination Street Sizzles..........2006-06-22

Fascination Street, by Bridget Midway, surely lives up to the name of the given title. When Zora and Grant move into a new community, relocating to a secluded cul-de-sac proves to be more than what initially meets the eye. Unbeknownst to this couple, their neighbors are anything but the typical kind that most of us have encountered. Enter the notion of partner swapping, pleasure giving, and consensual lusting, and you have the makings of a hot plot simmering in a zip code that proves to be spicier than the one on Wisteria Lane. In my opinion, what occurs on Fascination Street puts the Desperate Housewive's drama to shame. If you think that you've got it all figured out, think again--you probably don't. Although most of us have heard of swinging, via the grapevine or compliments of a documentary on sex practices, the author manages to put a unique twist on an old topic. Fascination Street proves to be fascinating, indeed. Colorful characters like Winta, Art, Brax and a host of others will leave you wanting to lock your doors--even in broad daylight. Each character has a distinct personality and different appeal, but most of all, the author enables the reader to picture the dirt they dish with ease. What happens on Fascination Street simultaneously employs fantasy, reality, creativity, and seduction. Moreover, it leads me to believe that Ms. Midway has done her research homework. Kinky little details ignite well-developed scenes. The story moves with thoughtful progression, as the last scene builds upon the next. The author's mode of delivery appears to fit well in a story that explores the prospect of alternative lifestyles.

Ms. Midway's creative perspective charms the reader enough to feel something for unsuspecting Grant and Zora, as their wild journey unfolds. One minute you find yourself wanting to warn them to turn down what they've been offered, and the next you find yourself wondering if their initial candor will ultimately strengthen their bond, despite the prospect of pain and unhappiness. To find out how Ms. Midway manages to pull all of this off, I recommend that you consider reading the story for yourself. With that said, I must warn you adequately. Fascination Street is a read that will most likely appeal to well-seasoned connoisseurs of erotica, or those who enjoy colorful, imaginative plots. Taboo sexual topics are thoroughly explored in a manner that will make some blush and others laugh or gasp. If you don't have an open mind, don't bother. If you do, you're in for a real treat.

I especially enjoyed the author's effort to make the story appeal to anyone of any race, given her inclusion of multicultural characters, as well as a healthy splash of interracial romance. Although I was rooting for Zora and Grant to make the opposite decision than the one that was made in the end, I still enjoyed this read. In my opinion, a reader should not omit the initial connection that an author makes, when the plot is built upon a solid foundation, and the characters make you feel something early on in the story. Ms. Midway proves to offer a unique voice that compliments her literary gift. I predict that her story telling ability will just get better with time...and it's already darn good.

What are some of your darkest sexual fantasies? You may have some you're not even aware of.

That's what I discovered when I read this book. It's an erotic romance that will either compel you to push forward with your own fantasies, have sex, or excessively crave intimacy with another.

Never, in my life, have I been so aroused just by reading a book. My libido was at an all-time high.

And I have to say it's one of the most audacious books I've come across thus far.

Bridget truly knows her erotica. And if you're looking to learn a thing or two, you most certainly won't be disappointed while reading this baby.

Within it, you'll be sure to find effervescent scenes, lots and lots of sex, drama, romance, and many things more.

It's a very difficult book to set down once you get started. The only reason one might take a break from it would be to have sex.

                        Book Description

Jeremy Solter is a teenager growing up in the late 21st century. During the school year, his family lives in Southern California-but during the summer the whole family lives and works in the city of Polisso, on the frontier of the Roman Empire. Not the Roman Empire that fell centuries ago, but a Roman Empire that never fell. For we now have the technology to move between timelines, and to exploit the untapped resources of those timelines that are hospitable to human life. So we send traders and businesspeople-but as whole-family groups, in order to keep the secret of Crosstime Traffic to ourselves. But when Jeremy ducks back home for emergency medical treatment, the gateways stop working. So do all the communication links. Jeremy and his sister are on their own, Polisso is suddenly under siege, and there's only so much you can do when cannonballs are crashing through your roof....

                        3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2007-09-07

If you've read and loved Turtledove's other series as I have, you will probably be disappointed with this take on alternate reality. There is none of the gritty tooth and nail conflicts that made his other works, The Worldwar Saga and The Great War books just to name a few, totally immerse you in their plots. I got the distinct feeling that I was being talked down to and perhaps this is the crux of the issue.
Not far into the book I came to realize that this was written for a juvenile audience. Looking at it from that point of view, the characters which were not fleshed out as they usually are and the more simplistic storyline became far more palatable to me. I believe that this would be a great book for young people who are just exploring the genre. Two teens trapped in an alien environment with no adults for support. It is unquestionably written with great talent, just don't expect the raw, real world environs so predominant his other books.

3 out of 5 stars Teen Angst in Rome.......2006-04-27

Jeremy and Amanda Solter live and go to school in L.A., but they spend their summers working with their parents in an alternate timeline, one where the Roman Empire never fell. When a medical emergency calls their parents away, the teens are suddenly on their own. Then the transmissions from home stop and an invading army is at the city gates.

Predictable plot aimed at teens, only interesting aspect is the look at how Romans lived day-to-day compared to modern society.

2 out of 5 stars Working Too Hard.......2006-04-01

Being a lover of H. Beam. Piper's Paratime Patrol-related books (especially Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen) I hoped for something similar from Turtledove. Alas, I found I just didn't care enough about the characters to look forward to reading what was coming up next in their story. Turtledove seems to try to make them interesting but there are plot eccentricities that jar. Why would anyone sell gaudy wrist-watches and Swiss Army knives in a Roman time line that also has developed a hyper-bureaucracy that keeps track of every little thing that stands out from the bland norm? Or take payment only in grain when buyers offer gold? Or "go for a walk" when there's a Lithuanian army coming to invest the town?
Turtledove could stand a refresher re-reading Piper, or, for authors whose characters I care about: Connie Willis whose plague-year story "Doomsday Book" is searing and wonderful; and Lois Bujold whose Miles Vorkosigan stories are, well, great.

2 out of 5 stars Beware, Turtledove fans!.......2005-10-09

An alternate history where the Roman Empire survives into and past our own time would make for a fascinating read if researched and written well, and Harry Turtledove would be one author who could probably do it. If so, he needs to try again, and a little harder.

Nowhere on the book jacket or cover blurbs or inside this $25 book is there are warning/indication that this is a book for children and maybe (very) young teenagers, but what is what it is. Since it is sold as standard science fiction/alternative history, and the author is well-known for that kind of standard fare for adults, it strikes me as a little cynical to just let the adult reader find this out for himself after buying the book.

Unfortunately, even as a youth-oriented adventure story that happens to be set in another "timeline," it falls short. JK Rowling need not fear this entry into her market.

It seems a little churlish to quibble about details in a kids' story, but kids are smart enough to pick up on this stuff, and Turtledove is smart enough to know better. So here are some of my personal quibbles.

The thing is set in the 2090s, and science has made interdimensional travel possible. Here, it seems to be used primarily for plundering oil and foodstuffs from the other worlds and bringing the goods back home, in exchange for slum trinkets like Swiss army knives and gaudy Japanese watches. Despite the "current" year being some 80 to 90 years ahead of us, very little besides this inter-dimensional trick has changed. Kids are still obsessed with TV and CDs, they shop at WalMart and Home Depot, use a PowerBook computer, and all of the gadgets in common use were in use in our time, 2005. They also speak English. Given the speed at which current fashions and customs have changed in the last 100 years, this is ridiculous. Only one SERIOUS change has occurred, and that is implied by the comment, "Guys in Los Angeles usually weren't so crude." Now that would signify massive change!

Sadly, the kids are too perfect by half, being politically correct to a mind-numbing and eye-rolling extent. Their physical revulsion at the concept of slavery is mentioned dozens and dozens of times, they abhor the idea of personal valor and even question the morality of self-defense, and they also seem to have a very strange aversion, again regularly bringing them to the verge (and beyond) of vomiting, when confronted with the custom of people wearing furs. Most odd, coming from kids wearing and using leather all the time, and craving a good burger and lamb vindaloo. Their precious and unwavering moral rectitude almost had me reaching for the airsickness bag myself at times.

Turtledove presents the Roman Empire roughly as it was in AD 150, adds the invention though not perfection of early gunpowder weapons, and at that point stops all progress. This seems way overly simplistic (and way too easy on an ambitious author). The Byzantine (East Roman) Empire outlasted the Western Empire by 1000 years, and there was significant progress made in that time in every field of knowledge. Why nothing new in 2000 years in this timeline? Why use time-dates at all; it would have been easier to say that the children went back in time itself. They don't need an alternate world for this.

Finally, every sf and alt/hist reader will be familiar with various logical and time-honored conventions concerning the genre. These are either absent or unevenly applied in this case. For example, they are prevented from interfering with the civilization as they find it...but are permitted (and encouraged) to trade goods technologically far advanced. And ultimately they negotiate with an enemy's king, free a slave, etc. This is non-interference? Better to allow them to actively interfere and deal imaginatively with the fall-out. Even the idea of essentially looting all the available food from a culture only slightly above subsistence level is pretty questionable for people who consider themselves moral paragons.

I can't recommend this book to either juvenile adventure readers (it is fairly dull and overly simply plotted) nor to Turtledove fans (way below his form).

2 out of 5 stars Easy to read but boring.......2005-05-29

I like juvenile sci fi. This was poorly done. It reminded me of watching a Magic School Bus episode on tv, except without any plot. Turtledove seems to have wanted to talk about the Roman Empire. He stuck a couple kids in his discussion of an alternate Roman Empire. Hmmmn -- here's a better comparison. Remember those kids books where a kid would go back in time to watch Paul Revere's ride, or some other historic event? Well, this is kind of like that, except without the event.

These kids are in a siege where it is only luck that they haven't been killed and where there is every chance that they will wind up conquered and turned into slaves. In a normal kids book, the kids would use the knowledge they have from their home world to aid the city, thus saving them from this fate. That's what most fun fiction is about -- there's a hero and the hero accomplishes things. The hero doesn't sit around selling trinkets while his world is falling apart -- especially not when we know very well the hero might be able to prevent the world from falling apart. Instead they contemplate how horrible it will be if they have to stay forever in this world and consider how they might become slaves or die. And do nothing.

I also think Turtledove must have done this all in one draft -- how many times did he start a section with something along the lines of "She liked to visit the town fountain from time to time, even though they didn't need the water. But that was where the women gossiped about what was going on in town -- women of all stations coming together to gossip. Now that I think of it -- why was that banker's wife picking up her own water, when surely that kind of heavy lifting should have been the work of her slave? And with all the complaining about grinding the flour, I found myself wondering why one couldn't simply pay someone to do it. Or buy some bread at a bakery with all that money they were getting selling beads to the natives...

                          Book Description

Gunpowder is widely recognized as an important technological factor behind political and even social change. This book surveys the history of gunpowder and firearms in India, tracing their arrival in the thirteenth century from China and in the late fifteenth century from Europe and examining the role played by the Mongols and the Portuguese in this transmission. Alongside this narraive of the diffusion of firearms, the book looks at their impact on the nature of the regional states in the fifteenth century and on the Mughal empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The hypothesis of "gunpowder empires" advanced by Hodgson is tested by a study of the development of muskets and the increasing potency of musketry. The book goes on to consider the growing obsolescence of the Mughal firearms from the middle of the seventeenth century onwards, as seen in the failure of Mughal artilery against the Persians at Qandahar (1652-3) and Karnal (1739). Simultaneaously, it examines the extent of the dissemination of muskets among peasant communities and relates this development to the growing militancy of certain sections of the rural population and the subsequent decline of the Mughal empire.

I have read women who love too much and am currently in recovery and that book along with this one that I just purchased has had an amazing impact on my life. It is truly a blessing that this material is available to women.

4 out of 5 stars I'm sure its not as corny as it seemed to me, meditating on this.......2005-07-05

I loved the original book (I also reviewed it) and I needed so much help to get out of "love too much" pattern with my ex husband. So I got this book. Daily meditations are indeed in line with all learned in the book, they are sort of daily reminders of all the little things we did wrong and all the things we need to change about US, but actually meditating on these, reading one per day seemed so corny. So I flipped thru it randomly and read several at one time until I would get tired, and then come back to it some other time. It might have worked better if I used it as prescribed, but I was too screwed up at the time. Unfortunately. For closing, here is one of my favorites: "We are certain that if we show someone how much we love him, no matter how he treats us, he will change. What we are really showing him is that it is safe for him to remain the same". Boy, was I champion of this particular mistake!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2003-08-09

I've given/recommended this book to several off my friends and family members. It's genuinely helpful and doesn't toss in the clinical bullcrap that comes along with "selfhelp" books.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Co-dependent no more.......2001-11-07

A very painful divorce and a subsequent tumultuous relationship forced me to face issues I had never faced from my childhood. I read book after book and there were many that helped to uncover what was underneath the behaviors I had developed. But of all the books, I consider this meditation book for Women Who Love Too Much to be my handbook for survival and true change. Whenever I feel myself slipping, I pick up the book and read it from cover to cover. I have many pages dog-eared that are particularly appropriate. I can't recommend it enough.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-06-06

I loved reading this book daily. Some meditations did not "really apply" for my situation but they made me think. It made me realize a lot of things, and I even used some thoughts as quotes that I sent to friends via email. I must say that it is a little book with a lot of wisdom.
