Book Description
Among the great works of world literature, perhaps one of the least familiar to English readers is the Shahnameh: ThePersian Book of Kings, the national epic of Persia. This prodigious narrative, composed by the poet Ferdowsi between the years 980 and 1010, tells the story of pre- Islamic Iran, beginning in the mythic time of Creation and continuing forward to the Arab invasion in the seventh century.
As a window on the world, Shahnameh belongs in the company of such literary masterpieces as Dante's Divine Comedy, the plays of Shakespeare, the epics of Homer classics whose reach and range bring whole cultures into view. In its pages are unforgettable moments of national triumph and failure, human courage and cruelty, blissful love and bitter grief.
In tracing the roots of Iran, Shahnameh initially draws on the depths of legend and then carries its story into historical times, when ancient Persia was swept into an expanding Islamic empire. Now Dick Davis, the greatest modern translator of Persian poetry, has revisited that poem, turning the finest stories of Ferdowsi's original into an elegant combination of prose and verse. For the first time in English, in the most complete form possible, readers can experience Shahnameh in the same way that Iranian storytellers have lovingly conveyed it in Persian for the past thousand years.
Customer Reviews:
At least as good as the Bible.......2007-07-30
Well, I'm only about 1/8 of the way through the book, but I'm going to recommend it to you already. If it turns out the last 7/8 is bad, I'll come back and qualify my review.
Acessible, readable and wonderful.......2007-01-17
This marvelous translation of the Shahnameh has resulted in a book that is accessible and readable. Dick Davies has managed to translate key passages into rhyming poetry, but the majority is well-written prose. He has omitted some repetitious passages to keep the length reasonable (around 850 pages) and to avoid testing the endurance of the general reader. This intelligent translation has succeeded in making the 10th Century epic accessible to the modern general reader..
Newest translation, great story.......2007-01-03
This is the newest translation of the famous Persian Book of Kings. Davis brings some great insight in from the original as much can be lost in translation. Love it, be aware it's very long, but a great addition to any family library or Persian buff.
Beautifully produced, but not aimed at scholarly research.......2006-12-14
This book is a beautiful hardcover book, and the text is written in an accessible prose style.
As an earlier reviewer noted, nowhere on the cover, dustjacket, or contents is it indicated that the text on offer is an abreviated version; indeed, I had asked the Penguin sales rep at a conference if it was abridged as was told that it was not. I am a bit miffed that in fact, it is, with no indication of where or how much beyond a brief note in the translator's preface.
As the original is verse, there are no footnotes, and no bibliography for further reading, I was dissapointed to discover that the vast majority of the book is in prose. I was hoping for a text that would enable me to easily find a way into more advanced scholarship related to this epic, but have unfortunately not found this edition helpful in that regard.
If you are looking for a good read in a new epic tradition this is a good book for you; if you are hoping to research Persian folk traditions and mythology, this book is probably not the resource for which you are looking.
An excellent one-volume condensed Shah-Namah........2006-11-02
With some of the material previously published in "The Lion and the Throne", "Father and Sons", and "Sunset of Empire" all published by Mage Publishers, Dr. Dick Davis has added some more of his translations and has crafted and compiled a very readable and compact version of the Shah-Namah in his latest publication: Shahnameh: The Persian Book of Kings.
The Shah-Namah is the National Epic of Persia/Iran, composed by the poet Abulqasim Firdausi in the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. The current standard edition of the poem which runs into nine volumes (roughly 300 pages per volume), includes over 50,000 lines. In its great length, and it's multiplicity of characters and generations, as well as in other significant ways, the Shah-Namah comes closer to the Indian Epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, than to say the Illiad, the Odyssey or the Aeneid of the western world.
According to history, Sultan Muhammad Ghaznavi commissioned Firdausi to compose the Shah-Namah, promising to pay the poet a gold coin for every line. The King does not fulfill his promise. Instead he sends the poet silver coins, which Firdausi despite his dire poverty refuses. The King finally realizing the worth of the poet, repents of his behaviour and travels to the city of Tus to console the poet. He is too late, as his procession enters the main gate of the city, it encounters another procession leaving the same gate, with Firdausi's coffin. While political power is temporal, history and literature are eternal. We remember the King, because we remember the Poet.
GIven the poem's immense length and repititions, some passages have inevitably been omitted and others presented in a summary form. The most substantial ommission is the episode of the "twelve champions" which occurs during the Kaikhushru's war against Turan. Variant editions of the Firdausi's text have been used in working on this translation, for justifiable reasons. The illustrations used in this edition are taken from the lithographs for popular nineteenth-century editions of the poem of Dr. Ulrich Marzolph.
The book is very readable with meticulous English and well framed sentences. The books ends with a sumptuous glossary of names. Every Parsi and Zarathushtrian the world over, who may want to know a little of their past heritage, should give this book their undivided attention.
Book Description
The great national epic of Persiathe most complete English-language edition
Wherever Persian influence has spread, the stories of the Shahnameh become deeply embedded in the culture, as their appearance in such novels as The Kite Runner amply attests. Among the greatest works of world literature, this prodigious narrative, composed by the poet Ferdowsi in the late tenth century, tells the story of pre-Islamic Iran, beginning in the mythic time of creation and continuing forward to the Arab invasion in the seventh century. The sweep and psychological depth of the Shahnameh is nothing less than magnificent. Now one of the greatest translators of Persian poetry, Dick Davis, presents Ferdowsi's masterpiece in an elegant combination of prose and verse.

Its ok.......2007-05-30
I bought 4 copies of this book for my daughter's teachers. I thought it would be a good item for them to remember her by(persian).
So, I did not read it, but did browse through it and read some sections. I love the translation. I am a little disappointed about the quality of the paper and binding. Also, I think there should have been some illustrations. Actually, I was expecting illustrations and there are none.
It seems to me this is just a cheap re-packaging of the much more expensive collection.

shahnameh.......2007-05-13
This is essential reading for those interested in Persian literature. If you like Beowulf and the Song of Roland and such works then you might want to have this. As with most medieval literature it's a little weak on characterization and the endless descriptions of battle scenes gets a little monotonous. For the casual curious reader you might just want to check it out from the library.
Product Description
This elaborate five-volume set is in both Persian and English. This is a special edition that was published to commemorate the millennium of Ferdowsi's birth. Featuring calligraphy and illustrations throughout, it is a must-have for collectors and those who enjoy this timeless masterpiece of Persian literature.

To correct the previous review, there have been at least two translations of the Shahnameh into English.
The book of Persian Mythology less known in the West........1999-02-20
This is the book that restored Persian culture after 200 years of Arab occupation after invasion of the Moslims that converted the religion of the Persian Empire from Zoroastrianism to Islam. Based on this book the persians restored their heritage, language, mythology and their culture. This is the book for people who love poetry and want to study the mythology of the Persian culture. There are no translation of this book into English yet.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!.......2006-10-20
This was a great book! I absolutly love books about the west. Historical Romance is my favorite...this book was simple to read and to understand. The characters where complicated and mysterious, which gave depth to the book. I highly recommend this book, if you like Historical Romance Novel!!
I was never able to warm up to the hero.......2006-07-11
I bought this book because it had Jodi Thomas' name on it. She always provides an enjoyable historical western romance. Her writing style is easy to read and engaging. While I don't find her stories to be keepers, they are worth a read, much like the works of Joan Johnston.
But THE TEXAN'S DREAM didn't live up to the standards I've come to expect of Jodi, hence the three star rating. I just couldn't like the hero. It wasn't that he was a terrible or abusive guy, because he wasn't. The problem was more that I felt I never really knew him. Since the vast majority of this story was written from the heroine's point-of-view, I was left feeling very distanced from the hero.
Okay, he was a man with a tortured past (but aren't they all in romance? ;) torn between the two worlds of Indian and white, but still, I just wasn't given a deep enough sketch of his character to feel like I really knew him. That made it hard for me to cheer for the couple to get together, because I didn't really see why she should be with him over any other man. I need to feel like the characters are supposed to be together, forsaking all others, or the romance just doesn't work.
However, I will still continue to read romances by Thomas, as she does have what it takes to make enjoyable stories. But THE TEXAN'S DREAM just isn't one of her best.
A captivating Love Story!.......2004-12-06
I loved the McLain series and was thrilled to find a sequel about Jonathan. Jodi Thomas updated his life, then continued with such vivid, descriptive detail, that you can invision his heartwarming love story
It has it all! Romance, drama, emotion, humor; all you can wish in a truly great love story. I couldn't put it down! We not only got back Jonathan and the McLains, but also the humorous, sensitive and very loveable character of Kara. Kara's story combined and complimented Jonathan and the McLain's with humor and love in true Jodi Thomas style. Exceptionally well written without unneccessary words just to fill the pages. I read my Romances for fantasy and relaxation, not education! Jodi Thomas took me on a totally captivating fantasy trip again!
Absolutely delightful........2003-10-23
Although my first preference isn't western stories Jodi Thomas and Bobbi Smith are converting me quickly. What incredible writers!!I don't agree that the main theme in this book is about perseverence and overcoming obstacles. I think it is much more than that. It's about the joy of friendship and love and the devastation when you lose someone you love. It's about the importance of family and the virtues of honesty and integrity. It's also about being true to ourselves and fighting for what we want. It's about forcing yourself to go on when you've lost everything. It's about risking everything for another person who needs you. It seems like such a "simple" little frontier story but don't be fooled. This is excellent. The characters have such a rich depth that they become friends.I hated to see the book end. I also love the sense of humor that's interspersed. Life would be unbearable if we couldn't laugh at ourselves and or with others. One of my favorite scenes is when Kara and Jonathon have a heated quarrel. He finds her crying (and hugged ) by a girl who only speaks apache. Since he also speaks apache, Dawn gives him a dressing down in apache. Poor hunky Jonathon mumbles : "You don't even understand a word she's saying and you're still on her side!!". Maybe you had to be there. And I hope you are....soon.
The Texan's Dream.......2003-04-16
I decided to read Jodi Thomas' The Texan's Dream because I wanted a light and interesting read, and I got what I wanted. It is a descriptive and easy to read novel that will make you laugh and cry. Thomas uses very little figurative language, but she does use a few similes to effectively show the reader what is happening, and her use of vivid imagery paints a picture of her surroundings.
The Texan's Dream is about Kara, a woman sent west by her father in order to protect her during the union conflicts in the coal mines in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. She needs a job, and is soon hired by Jonathan, a man she describes as cold and unemotional. They become close friends who slowly fall in love.
The theme of this novel is overcoming obstacles. Kara and Jonathan both had emotional and family problems that could have ended their relationship if they had not persevered, but they did not let these obstacles get in the way of their love.

I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.
Game of life.......2007-07-24
I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.
Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.
Product Description
This superb fingerpicking reference book features 101 authentic, traditional blues fingerstyle licks for guitar. The goldmine of licks is divided into the following categories: Four-beat licks; Eight-beat licks; Introductions and turnarounds. The licks are written in both standard notation and guitar tablature, and recorded at a moderate speed on the companion CD. This is not a method book for beginners, but a nice collection of licks for guitarists who have some fingerstyle ability and want to do some exploring. Another GREAT guitar book from Red Dog Music Books.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as Red Thunder.......2007-09-12
I looked forward to reading the new book, but I have to admit I liked the first one better... John Varley definitely has the early Heinlein-ian touch though.
About as good as funky morning breath.......2007-09-07
The book starts out promising, with a vivid description of life on mars. However, given the fact that you're stuck in the perspective on just one person for the longest time (it's not really 'narration'), it gets boring very fast. And if your looking for a book to give to kids or teens... I would advise against giving this one. While the language and subjects start clean, within a few chapters, the f-bomb is dropped several times, and suggestive topics come up (such as talk of viewing people naked and how it turns some people on).
This is a complete waste of paper and a good story line. It distracts from the overall theme, in my opinion. Quite frankly, I didn't finish the first 6 chapters, and I have no desire to start reading it again.
Depressingly Heinlein.......2007-08-15
Varley's sequel to "Red Thunder" -- which was a fun adventure story in the mold of Robert Heinlein's series for young readers -- is a continuation of the story but told in a more adult manner. Like Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" or the Methuselah series, "Red Lightning" depicts a series of disasters and militant takeovers which, while well-written and probably more accurate to human nature, nevertheless exhibit some of the nastier sides of humanity. As such, I found this book somewhat tough slogging, in exactly the same way that Heinlein's pessimism is eventually too depressing to enjoy.
Written as it was between two real disasters -- 9/11 and the Indonesian tsunami -- perhaps Varley's mind was too occupied by disasters to be light, optimistic and cheery.
I thought the first few chapters were marvelous writing, and the quality of the writing didn't really dip as the story went on. Just the subject matter got sad, then barbaric, then inhuman, and finally appalling. That's something I associate more with Heinlein than Varley.
All over the place.......2007-07-31
This here's one of those SciFi novels that's written about the "future" but it's really more about the author's view on current events. I like John Varley. I've enjoyed some of his books and enjoy reading his film reviews on his web site. But the meandering plot here looses focus to many times in dabbling in Katrina/tsunami horrors, populist anti-government rhetoric and a coming of age story. There's some nifty ideas, and swift turns of phrase hidden here and there, but the weaknesses outweighed the strengths for me.
Red Thunder Sequel.......2007-07-26
Manny, the protagonist of Red Thunder, is running a hotel on Mars catering to tourists.
Earth is hit by an incoming projectile. Millions of people around the Atlantic Ocean are killed by the resulting tsunami. Manny, and a lot of other people on Mars go to Earth to see if their relatives back there are all right.
This story is told from the viewpoint of Ramon, Manny's son.
That is only the start of the story. Ramons part in the subsequent Martian moves toward independence after a mercenary invasion are pivotal, but you need to read both books to get the big picture.
If you want the best experience of this book, read Red Thunder first, then Red Lightning.

READ.......2000-07-30
See my review of "Presumed Dead."
Police action the way you want it........1999-01-25
Once again Hugh Holton has hit the police action on the head. Being a police officer for over 30 years, I find that 'Red Lightning', puts me into the life of Larry Cole. Hugh knows how to make you feel that you are there. His villians are bad and they know how to inflect pain and death on their victims. I plan to read his books as they are published. Also, 'ZORRO', will get his.
Cop action in Chicagoland........1998-12-21
Red Lightning strikes swiftly to entrap the reader with its many twist and turns through Chicago's changing landscape. As a Chicagoland resident, I find myself riding shotgun as Detective Commander Larry Cole goes lights and siren to capture the villainous felons who cast death and destruction in Chicago's most popular neighborhoods. Hugh Holton balances political scandal, quality of life and surrealistic chance with back alley detective work and gut reaction instinct. With his Glock 9mm blazing, Lt. Larry Cole, and his team of top gun detectives, bring the reader into a each fire fight as if we were one of his team.
Although sometimes too unrealistic, this only adds to captivate the reader to grasp the cat and mouse game being played out. I really enjoy how Mr. Holton mixes outside governmental agencies to complicate this action adventure. This is another excellent novel in his string of successful Chicago reading adventures.
Winner!.......1998-09-18
You never know what to expect when you read one of Holton's book! There are two thing that you can expect. One thing is how insanely dangerous his villians are! Holton's villians are so warp that they make Hannibal Lector look normal! The second thing is how Cheif Larry Cole handles them.
Will the real Hugh Holton please stand up.......1998-09-16
I was extremely disappointed. I was spoiled by Mr. Holton's Windy City and Chicago Blues, both fine works, but "Red" does not carry on in the fine Holton tradition that one would expect. The writing wasn't nearly as crisp as in past books and the story line was predictable and boring. What's more, our hero, Chief of Detectives has divorced his wife, his son is now fatherless, another family bites the dust because it's more important to be super "Chief" than super family man. Now super stud is running after skirts. I'm not impressed. And what happened to the other characters that we've come to enjoy? They barely made an appearance. How sad.
