A great addition to a Vintage Paperback collection! :).......2006-12-11
This book has such great cover art and classic quotes on the cover:
"So strongly and movingly has Mr. Douglas portrayed these people that it has frequently been said of this strange and moving story that the people who read it are never quite the same again."
Seems to be a real "potboiler"! It is an attractive book with lots of nostalgia. :)
Memorable.......2006-10-05
This book is beyond description.
Something everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.
Very few books, Fiction especially, leave the reader with a sense of purpose and a glimpse into the life lived a little more extrodinarily.
A common idea told in a fascinating way can put new energy into our lives and all the while showing us that there is more fufillment to be had if we stop looking at what we need and want and put more emphasis on the lives of others.
A timeless unforgetable adventure that will always be with you no matter how old you are.
And you will learn what Dr. Hudson meant when he said, I can't give it back to you, because I've used it up for myself.
SPECTACULAR.......2006-06-03
This book is splendid. It is not a great composition in the literary sense. One doesn't read it with the thrill of experiencing dazzling artistry of words. Shakespeare it is not.
However, this is one of the best books I have ever read; and I have read it several times. It is the purest story of triumph of the human spirit. The most profound triumph is over self. This book explores the topic with dazzling brilliance.
Timeless, moving, and inspirational, this book is one you are sure to never, ever forget. It will stay with me until I die, and I can only hope to be half the man the protagonist is. I would loved to have met the author - he must have been extraordinary. I can think of no novel more worthy of my reading time.
A MUST READ.......2006-02-22
With the Magnificent Obsession, I had read the book years ago and never forgot it. For the past couple years I have been looking on the Net to see if I could find a copy of it any where. However, I was looking for the title "The Magnificent Obsession" until I left out the "the" one day and found the book at Amazon. If you love helping people, this book is a must read.
Excellent.......2005-10-27
I received the book in excellent shape. It was new and received in timely manner. Thank you!

Spiritual Key to a Fulfilled Life........2007-05-31
Author Lloyd C. Douglas offers an extraordinary gift in this book -- the spiritual key to a fulfilled life. Together with the sequel, "Dr. Hudson's Secret Journal," Douglas uses the vehicle of compelling storytelling to describe a way to extend oneself outward and form an eternal connection with humankind. Douglas, a former Protestant minister who also gave us "The Robe" and "The Big Fisherman," explains how one's life can be transformed through the act of giving to others. I first read this book and its sequel when I was a young teenager. They have remained at the top of my favorites list ever since. Whether you're looking for an enjoyable novel, or something with deeper meaning, "Magnificent Obsession" will not disappoint you.
A Magnificent Read!.......2006-02-27
This book shows us how we should all be living today - loving our neighbor, and doing good for the sake of doing good, rather than for the recognition. The good works we are able to accomplish multiply and become even more magnificent when the benefactor remains anonymous, and requests the recipient to "pass it on" - what a positive contribution to society!
Magnificent Obsession by Lloyd C. Douglas.......2005-09-28
It has frequently been said of this strange story that the people who read it are never quite the same again! Douglas at his best. A wonderful book!!
Book Description
The popularity of the sculptures of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is due in no small part to the evangelical efforts of the pre-eminent twentieth-century American collector B. Gerald Cantor. Featuring some of the artist's greatest masterpieces, together with many of his drawings, prints, photographs and memorabilia, this book chronicles how the Cantor collection of around 750 works by Rodin grew. Beautifully illustrated throughout, it reveals how one man's obsession provided the world with a hugely significant bequest of the work of one of the greatest sculptors of all time.
Provides a comprehensive overview of one of the world's most important Rodin collections
Offers new insights into the artist's working methods

Not enough photos of the cover collection........2007-08-23
It is always interesting to see what others are collecting. I would have liked to see more of the aquarium furniture that was shown on the front cover. I was more interested in seeing the collections than reading so much text.
Worthwhile passions.......2001-12-30
A glorious celebration of twenty collectors and their passions. Peter Brenner's excellent color photos capture them with their lifes work. My favorite is Dorothy Twining Globus who collects (as she says) 'Everything'.
The Cade brothers go for anything Studebaker and that includes over thirty real cars. Kit Hinrichs loves the Stars and Stripes, his collection can be seen in the sumptuous book 'Long May She Wave'.
Author Tuchman's fascinating text details how each one pursued their dreams, I can identify with a lot of this because some years ago I managed to collect 450 radio station t-shirts (still got 'em too, email me with offers).
This book is very similar to Ellen Land-Webber's out-of-print photo essay 'The Passionate Collector'. If you really have the collecting bug check out 'The Collecting Book' by Ellen and Lewis Liman, 800 photos of collections and lots of practical information.
I wonder if anyone collects books about colectors? Hmmm...this could be the start of my new collection!
Makes you feel like you're not so wierd..........2000-04-26
If you can stand waiting a while to get this book, it's definitely worth the wait! The collections featured are all similar in that they are exhaustive in scope, and many of them are extremely intriguing due to their subject matter. The only drawback to this book is that it's too short! It wets the appetite for the unusual and eccentric, but doesn't come close to satisfying you once you've started reading.

Book Description
Dear Reader,
My new story begins on a terror-filled night when two babies--identical twin girls of noble birth--are separated. One grows to womanhood as the frail, manipulative ward of the handsome young earl of Harcourt. The other becomes an enchanting, street-smart urchin who earns her way as a traveling player on the streets of England and France.
The two girls' paths might never again have crossed if Harcourt hadn't run into Miranda in the midst of an exuberant performance. The resemblance to his ward is unmistakable--uncanny, in fact...and an ambitious plot begins to take shape in Harcourt's mind.
His ward, Maude, will commit herself to a convent rather than marry the love-struck king of France, who will soon be traveling to London to claim her. What if Miranda were to take Maude's place? Harcourt is confident that with the right training, the right clothes, and the right attitude, the lithe, carefree Miranda will captivate society--and the king.
So begins Harcourt's breathtaking scheme to turn an ugly duckling into a gorgeous swan. But if he succeeds too well, Miranda may become something irresistible--even to Harcourt....
It's a delicious dilemma and a dangerous deception...and the twists and turns surprised even me.
Warmest wishes,
Jane Feather

a little bit dull.......2007-07-09
I thought that this book wasn't very bad. but i have read better books so i thought that this one moved along a bit slow. i think that it could have definetly been more fun and exciting. but, it was the better of the others from this trilogy.
This series,.......2003-08-26
Jane Feathers' The Emerald Swan, gives just cause why stories should not come in sets of 2, 3, for more books as a rule. They lose their luster! The first books in this series was enjoyable but it lost it for me after that. The last books were boring and predictable. What's with all the romance novels being sold into so many books on the same story line anyway? I hate that. When I read a story and buy a book I want an ending and I want it to end with each book, thank you very much! I will not be reading any more romance type series books ever again. Yes, I am that annoyed!
Third in Charm Bracelet Trilogy.......2001-08-23
This was a wonderfully well-written love story. Miranda was a delight. And I just loved her little monkey, Chip. And she brought so much to Maude. I just knew Maude had to be made of sterner stuff than she protrayed at first. Now the story could have done without Gareth's sister. She was a horrible wretch. I think Ms. Feather could have invented a better character for his sister. Out of the series I must say this was by far the best one. Highly recommed!
DELIGHTFULLY ADORABLE.......2001-02-20
This is my favorite and the best of the Charm Bracelet series. The twin Miranda is so clever and talented and possitively adorable. She is so different from her twin Maude who is withdrawn and silent....until. This was a very entertaining delightful story and I loved it. A keeper and definitely recommended reading, even if you don't read the other 2 books in the series. They are not sequels and I couldn't even understand the connection of the charms on the bracelet to each person. How did the ancient Swan end up in France so many years later?? How did the other charms end up in the hands of those involved?? Guess I missed something important somewhere.
Jane Feather's trilogy concludes in a blaze of glory.......2000-12-14
The last of Jane Feather's charm bracelet trilogy, THE EMERALD SWAN, is a great romance novel. On the bloody night of St. Bartholomew's massacre in France, two twin infant girls are separated when their mother, a Hugenot named Elenor d'Albard, is killed by a Catholic mob. Years later, the Earl of Harcourt, Elenor's cousin, sees a female street performer who bears a striking resemblance to his cousin, Maude. The Earl offers the limber and talented Miranda a proposition to impersonate Maude in fear that the ailing Maude will refuse her station to marry the Duke of Roissy, who is in reality King Henry of Navarre and France. All-consuming love and passion flares up between the earl and Miranda, plunging them into peril as they precariously attempt to play out the deceptive charade in hopes that Queen Elizabeth and King Henry will remain blind to the switch.
I was completely fulfilled and satisfied with this last book in Jane Feather's trilogy. The plot of the book, which consists of twin sisters separated at birth, a handsome and elegant earl, a traveling troupe of performers, and a flamboyant monkey, makes this novel pure joy to experience. The author accurately depicts the strict mannerisms and protocol demanded of nobility in Queen Elizabeth I's court. She also beautifully portrays the love that blossoms between the earl and Miranda as something inevitable and intrinsic; it's almost as if they were born to this earth to love one another.
Every single one of the main characters was so well-written I felt as if I knew them personally: The Earl and Miranda, Maude and Imogen, even Miranda's cute pet monkey Chip who likes to remain in the room while the Earl and Miranda are making love. Even the chemistry between Maude and Henry is captivating.
Don't miss out on this great book. Many hours of romantic entertainment and fulfillment are in store for you if you buy and read this novel. (And as a last suggestion, if you loved this book, you might want to check out the French film "Queen Margot" as well.)

"Why in Christ's name can the woman never bring a ship back intact?" muses Hamish Alexander at the triumphant return of Honor Harrington in Ashes of Victory, the apparent resurrection of a woman he'd seen executed by the Peeps some two years earlier. Yep, she's back: minus a left arm and an eye, minus a few inches of hair, and more than a little banged up in the process, the indestructible, ever-resilient Honor is back from the dead--and she's got some 400,000 liberated POWs from Hades in tow for good measure.
Picking up where Echoes of Honor left off, the ecstatic reunion that begins Ashes proves short-lived as Honor once again lives up to her nickname of "The Salamander," always ending up where the fire's hottest. In the longest book of this naval space-opera series, David Weber plunges his beloved heroine (now an admiral!) into a thick tangle of political plots, as she takes on a more mature, behind-the-scenes role than in previous books. But don't fret: there's still some good action as HH prevents an assassination attempt and Manticore and its allies test-drive their new weaponry. And quite a few characters get what's coming to them too, including a few who drop like picked-off Peeps. All in all, yet another worthy installment in the series--check out On Basilisk Station first if you're new to HH. --Paul Hughes
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional!.......2006-07-07
Another exception book by David Weber in the Honor Harrington series. I love the female heroine, which is not common in the sci-fi genre of this type, and she is totally believable, totally relatable, and simply amazing! I have read each and every book of this series and except for one, I found them all to be equally compelling. Now, I want one of those cats! (read the book to find out what I mean!)
Give it a break.......2006-03-17
Please David, you are making me lose my love of the series.
Very Disappointing.......2005-12-26
The only reason I bought this book was because I was so impressed by Weber's previous novel "In Enemy Hands" (actually, I unknowingly skipped from Honor Harrington book 7 to 9). "In Enemy Hands" was so addicting because it had all the traits of a classic sci-fi adventure/drama: interstellar warships, exciting space battle, hand to hand combat, and of course the cute & cuddly alien creature (who can get very nasty if someone pisses them off). Honor Harrington seemed to be up to every challenge, and kicked ass with such ease that it was rather entertaining to read.
Which brings me to "Ashes of Victory". This novel started out very strongly, explaining the dramatic escape of Honor and the 500,000 prisoners she freed from the prison planet Hell. Although it is hard to top the previous drama of Honor's escape from the clutches of Cordillea Ransom's P.M.S rage, I thought the introduction was well written and showed a nice transition between the two books. I also liked the hero's welcome Honor received when she got back home.
So far so good, but then Honor got promoted by the queen herself to a nice desk job where she would help train cadets at the military academy on Saganami, at the same time she would get physical therapy for her many battle ailments. Now that's when the problems started. This novel got so boring that I had to force myself to finish it! In between countless diner parties Honor would organize so she and her top students could talk about military history and assign home work, and in between numerous sign language lessons to her lovable treecat, there was simply no new developments for about a hundred pages. This novel could have been half as thick and still contain the same amount of drama.
I was seriously considering rating this book with 1 star because it was so freaking BORING, I even promised myself never again to read an Honor Harrington novel, but I decided on giving it 3 stars because the ending had definitely surprised me when I thought David Weber had no more ideas left: Admiral Theissman finally got some balls and that prick Saint-Just finally got what was coming to him. The People's Republic is in pieces and anything can happen now.
I really liked the conclusion to this novel, but only read this book if you have lots of patience and if you are willing to skip a few chapters that are obviously not relevant to the Honor Harrington saga.
Honor Harrington--Back from the dead.......2005-12-01
In Ashes of Victory, the ninth installment in David Weber's Honor Harrington series, Commodore Harrington returns from the Havenite prison planet known as Hell, along with some 400,000 liberated Prisoners of War in tow. She is promoted to Admiral and given a desk job at the RMN Academy as a teacher in tactics.. Weber moves Honor from the war theater of space to a different battlefield in the political arenas of both the Star Kingdom of Manticore and Grayson. While this novel may have fewer space battles than other HH books, there still are several included in this story. Honor thwarts assassination attempts against both Queen Elizabeth III and Grayson Protector Benjamin Mayhew. Weber shows us that fighting in the political battlefront can be just as interesting and engaging as any military battle. Honor's unrequited love for Hamisch Alexander, Earl of White Haven, is a plotline which will carry over into the next book, War of Honor. And what will the new Havenite government be like? Ashes of Victory is another captivating read from David Weber, and a fine addition to his "Honorverse."
Will they never learn?.......2005-05-15
She back and it seems like everything is going to work out right for a change...but you know better than that, don't you?
In this installment, Honor returns in triumph both to Grayson and to Manticore. She is the heroine of the day and can seemingly do no wrong. After all, it is not every hero who manages to return from the dead. Her popularity, though, has its price. It really hacks off the opposition in both her Star Kingdoms and there will be a price to pay.
While Honor sets her houses in order, so does the navy. They are finally ready to resume the offensive and put away the Peeps for good. Everything goes even better than expected but they all forgot to make provisions for hacked off politicians who are determined to prevent the other party from looking good even if it means defeat.
As usual, Weber does a superb job of telling a story. He manages to weave bits of history from the Napoleonic era into his plot line without making a carbon copy (albeit with spaceships). There are also alusions to the cold war which should be enough to send a chill down anyone's spine. This book is as worthy for its political and social commentary as it is for its grand space opera.
As with most of the later Harrington books, this one should be read in succession. The information in the previous volumes may not be absolutely essential but it will sure make the story easier to follow.
Start at the beginning and then be ready to put all else aside until the series is finished.
