Book Description
A riveting tale of addiction to drugs, physical love, and dysfunctional family dynamics Kate Braverman's novel is not easily forgotten. The story is told by Rose, a woman who has spiraled downward from a string of loveless affairs and an unhappy marriage to a hallucinatory world of cocaine and cruelty that is both sensual and squalid. That Braverman is also an accomplished poet is evident in the purity of her language. Powerfully evoking the disaffected atmosphere of the 1970s, this haunting story tells of a young woman's fierce flight from a dark life of obsession. This reissue features a new foreword by Rick Moody. Lithium for Medea is jumpy, kinetic, and finally very powerful, a deeply felt piece of work by a very gifted writer. Joan Didion
Customer Reviews:
Lithium For Medea.......2006-06-09
From start to finish Kate Braverman forces the reader into a fun house, a meat grinder, turning and forcing you to experience a well oiled intensity. At times the writing is caustic, biting and poisonous. Poison to the emotions, a drug that invokes passion. The atmosphere is vivid and surreal for the reader though, at times, not for the narrator. A superb book. Each line is finely tuned and crafted like music, rich in images and color like photography and still is able to shake the humanity through the novel. Highly recommended especially for other writers.
Anniversary.......2006-01-17
Few people know that 2006 is the 25th anniversary of the first pubication of "Lithium for Medea," Kate Braverman's glittering and riveting first novel. Setting her book in the many odd facets of the Los Angeles in which she grew up, a land of the disaffected and disenfranchised, she opens the city in a way that few writers have even attempted to do. She illustrates and paints it in its own dark spectrum of blues, from the undiminished powderpuff blue of its cloudless morning sky to the bruised indigo of its desperate nights. She fills it with alienated people doing irreversible damage to themselves and others. At the heart of her novel is a life-and-death struggle between a mother and daughter who are in many ways more similar than they even wish to be. The daughter expresses her bottomless depression and sense of alienation by sinking into a world of abusive relationships and destructive substances. This is not a book that speaks to everyone; only those who are capable of examining the darkest aspects of the world in which they live can open to and appreciate Braverman's perceptions, or even her prose, which has the faultless savagery and cadence of a well-wrought poem.
To celebrate its silver anniversary, "Lithium" has been republished with a reprint of the wonderful preface by writer and admirer Rick Moody. It's an underground monument to American life worth reading and owning, and Braverman is one of our most unique, most authentic authors.
Too much!.......2005-02-21
I've always thought of myself as a person who likes the off the wall books, but this book was a little over the top for me. The author does write beautifully, but I think that her writing is best suited for short stories. There are way too many adjectives in her writing, and the book seems to be weighed down by all the drug use. It jumped all over the place and it just could not keep my attention.
boring, pseudo-poetic, overitten.......2003-11-09
I was utterly disappointed in the quality of fiction an indie (very interesting and likeable too) publishing house like "Seven Stories Press" backs and publishes. Braverman's novel is a fake; a laughably overwritten composition: just like an dreamy adolescent's diary it's wildly in love with words(four to five adjectives before every single noun), and it teems with metaphors, pseudopoetic images and repetitions. This is supposed to be a memoir of family tensions, love gone sour, addiction and death; nevertheless, it reads like an overlong, overwritten and very clumsy poem on Los Angeles, full of cliches and borrowed phrases. I wonder what made Ricky Moody write the preface: public relations can be real tricky.
Impressed, but not overly so........2003-03-05
Maybe I expected it to be better, but I found parts of this book a chore to wade through.
I appreciate that in real life people do go over and over the same scenes in their head, but it felt like Braverman had simply cut and pasted paragraphs from one chapter to another.
I guess I'm not the kind of reader who enjoys rereading sections for their lyricism, so I felt like I was being forced to do so against my will.
Hard to complain because it is so much better than most of the stuff I have read lately. That being said, I'd recommend Mark of an Angel, Virgin Suicides, and Ice Storm prior to this.
Perhaps if you are a drug addict with a cancerous gambler for a Dad, you will find that this is a perfect snapshot of your life and a motivating force. But for someone on the outside looking in, it's simply a very well written book about these people that repeats itself just a couple times more than I would have liked.

Two Attempts on Mayor's Life
by Colleen Montgomery (staff reporter)
Draft
Mayor Maxwell Vance was shot in an apparent assassination attempt yesterday. A second attempt on his life was made at Vance Memorial Hospital, where nurse [leave her name out?] Chloe Tanner managed to stop the assailant before being injured herself. She is currently under protection. [Note to self: disclose FBI agent protecting her and her kids is my brother Brendan.] Speculation is that the mayor was shot in retaliation for his strong anti-drug stance, following the new surge of drug-related crimes in Colorado Springs. Does the would-be killer want Chloe silenced forever?
Customer Reviews:
love admist danger..........2006-01-31
I found the beginning of this a bit confusing and I found the end to be left hanging. I did enjoy the suspense aspect of this story and kept trying to guess who the person was who was after Chole. I also enjoyed the relationship development between Chole and Brendan. I don't think they moved too fast into a relationship and they developed a good friendship. For the most part I very much enjoyed this book and I loved the christian theme. It had a solid scripture base and I liked how different scriptures were incorporated in the book without it being a neon light of "this is now a scripture". The only draw back of this book for me was the confusion I felt in the beginning and the left hanging feeling I felt at the end.

Great Reference.......2001-11-13
Don Crutchfield has "taken the bull by the horns" and written a book covering many kinds of protection. Being from the Midwest, we tend to think the computer and identity type thefts can't happen to us. Wrong! Thanks Don for opening our eyes and making us think about all the privacy protection areas. I know you have dealt with many of these problems in your line of business and I appreciate a first hand review of things I can do to help protect myself, the people I love and my property.
Once in a while a good book comes along........2001-08-16
PROTECT YPURSELF AT ALL TIMES really gets down to the nitty gritty. Unlike many other "security manuals" for the layman, this book covers common sense, everyday tips, yet also covers sophisticated security topics such as computers and identity theft. It wasn't dry. I enjoyed the areas such as the stalking chapter, where the author talks about actual cases. It is obvious that the man has a sense of humor. Having been in law enforcement, I can relate because, without a sense of humor, you will develop ulcers and one lousy attitude. I highly reccomend this as a security primer for everybody.
An Essential Survival Tool.......2001-08-16
This is a manual, which, refreshingly, speaks equally to women as to men. Crutchfield is hardly condescending towards women but offers good, solid advice for every woman. This is especially true when he covers domestic violence. As a victim many years ago of domestic violence, I can only say I wish I had this book at that time. I know it would have helped me in what was a terrible situation. I have a parent whom I will have to place in a home and the chapter on senior care and elder abuse was enlighting to say the least. I particularly appreciated the list of resource sources. I have given copies of PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES to close friends and family.

The Terminal Experiment has propelled Robert J. Sawyer into the limelight as one of science fiction's hot new writers, earning him the prestigious Nebula Award in the process. In this fast-paced thriller, Dr. Peter Hobson's investigations into death and afterlife lead him to create three separate electronic versions of himself: one has no memory of physical existence and represents life after death; one has no knowledge of death or aging and represents immortality; and the third is left unaltered as a control. But all three have escaped into the worldwide matrix...and one of them is a killer.
Customer Reviews:
Another solid work.......2007-06-26
This here's another solid work by a really good SciFi writer. Tho, 12 years after publication it could use an revised edition. Seems funny to be reading about VCRs still being used in the year 2011 and Donahue and Geraldo as leading TV newscasters. Solid SciFi thriller that's thought provoking; abortion, AI, nanotech figuring in the nifty plot.
A decent story from one of the best SF writers.......2007-05-07
Robert J. Sawyer is a great science fiction writer, having won every major award in the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and would have won one in Antartica if they had a contest. This novel won the Nebula and was a Finalist for the Hugo.
Frankly, I do not see why.
The story is based on two scientific premises: detection of the soul leaving the body and computer based artificial intelligence. Detection of the soul leads to experiments in AI to determine what life after death might be like. Dr. Peter Hobson, the inventor of the "soulwave" detection, uses AI and nueral net scanning to create three versions of himself: a life after death sim, an immortality sim and a control sim that is just like him. Hobson has some issues to deal with in his personal life (I won't play spoiler here), and those issues are duplicated into the three sims. One of them goes bad, and starts using the net to kill people.
Sawyer's claim to fame is that he will take premises like this and wrap very real characters around them. The concept of science fiction is in making both the science and the fiction work for the reader. Many writers tend to forget this, either throwing out unbelievable science or getting the science right but forsaking the characters or the plot. Sawyer is normally magic in this.
The Terminal Experiment is a good read, with nice pacing. It bogs down at times in the explanations of the science, and some of the philisophical discussions of the AI's. But the concept of killer AI computers has been hashed and re-hashed (remember HAL!), as has the concept of detecting something that proved life after death. And unlike other Sawyer novels, I had difficulty caring about the characters, esp. Cathy, Peter's wife.
I'm glad I read it, but I'm gonna go now and read Hominids, Humans and Hybrids, his classic Neaderthal Parallax series.
A good tale.......2006-08-28
Sawyer weaves an interesting spin on his "mind scanning" series. In this one three different versions of Peter Hobson's mind are scanned into a computer and literally become thinking beings within the net. One of the three, free of some of mankind's restraints, begins killing people that Hobson didn't like. Hobson and his friend Sarker try to figure out which version of Hobson is doing the killings and then try to stop it.
Meanwhile, a detective who investigating the crimes is honing in on Hobson and his wife as possible suspects. However, as she gets closer to the truth, she is also putting her life in danger from the rogue version of Hobson.
Interwoven into this tale is a discovery of a possible human soul and the ramifications to religion, abortion and other political issues it causes.
A very quick read!
Science fiction that focuses on people, not things.......2005-11-21
I came across Sawyer from the Neaderthal trilogy, but I've found much of his other work to be significantly better novels. This is the type of sci fi that I most enjoy: it posits (primarily) a single change from our current reality--and a relatively small one at that--and deals with the impacts that this change has on humanity, seen through the lens of one particular and realistic individual. In this case, it's an enhaced version of an MRI; one that allows mapping of individual neural connections, which allows the uploading of a persona into a sufficiently powerful computer. The characters aren't charicatures, but come in a variety of grays, just as people actually do. It's also very much a near future setting and so doesn't take place in a tidy utopia, but it's also without the gritty gothic/punk flavor of authors such as Neal Stephenson. This isn't a book for someone looking for an epic space opera or a glittering cornucopia of nifty gadgets; it's a much more humanist form of science fiction.
Nebula for fan fiction?.......2005-10-04
You might have picked up this book because it won a Nebula. You know past winners: Dune, Red Mars, Neuromancer, Ender's Game, and, oh Terminal Experiment. Start whistling the Sesame Street "one of these things does not belong with the other" song because by about page 10 you wonder how what amounts to no better than Internet fan fiction not only found a publisher but won a major sci fi award in 1995. Good god. It would seem you can win a Nebula for giving us a run of the mill AI cautionary tale and cardboard characters. I'm embarrassed as a sci fi reader to even lay claim to this novel as part of the genre.

Description:
As part of the restoration of biodiversity on former agricultural land there has been focused on methods to enhance the rate of transition from agricultural land towards natural grasslands or forest ecosystems. Management practices such as sowing seed mixtures and inoculating soil of later successional stages have been used. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a managed plant community on the diversity of soil fungi in a newly abandoned agricultural land. A field site was set up consisting of 20 plots where the plant diversity was managed by either sowing 15 plant species, or natural colonization was allowed to occur. The plant mixture contained five species each of grasses, legumes and forbs that all were expected to occur at the site. A subset of the plots (five from each treatment) was inoculated with soil cores from a late successional stage. The plant community composition was subject to a principal component analysis based on the coverage of each species. Five years after abandonment, soil samples were taken from the plots, DNA was extracted and the ITS region of the rDNA gene was amplified using fluorescently labelled fungal specific primers (ITS 1F/ITS 4). The PCR products were digested using HinfI and TaqI and sequenced. Results from both restriction enzymes were combined and a principal component analysis performed on the presence/absence of fragments. Also the fungal diversity expressed as number of restriction fragments were analysed. There was significantly higher fungal species richness in the experimental plots compared to the forest and field soils, but no differences between sown and naturally colonized plots. The different plant treatments did not influence the below ground fungal community composition. Soil water content on the other hand had an impact on the fungal community composition.

Description:
Development of simplified models for air diffusers is essential for the applicability of CFD-modelling to room air flow simulation. The geometry of a diffuser is usually complex and, therefore, it is not possible to use an exact geometrical model in practical CFD-simulations. The model should be simple enough to enable the modelling of a room with several diffusers. In this study, a simplified model was developed for the nozzle duct diffuser. The diffuser consists of a duct, which is partly covered with small nozzles creating high-velocity jets. A complex circulating flow pattern is created between the jets. The room air enters the flow from the nozzle-free sector and is mixed with the supply air. The flow field near the diffuser was investigated with laboratory measurements in order to determine the boundary conditions for the simplified model. The developed model is based on momentum sources describing the induction of secondary air caused by the jet system. The model was validated with laboratory test cases by comparing the simulation results with measurements. The measured flow patterns in the four test cases with different Archimedes numbers were well reproduced by the simulations.

Unstated edition hard cover novel originally serialized in four parts under the title "Hobson's Choice" in Analog Magazine's 1994-1995 issues.
Book Description
Sailor Bob Adamson's search came to an end in the mid 1970s with an encounter with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, the revered jnani of Bombay. Since that time he has shared his understanding with those who look for answers to the essential questions of life. This book is a compilation of dialogues with seekers who attend the weekly meetings with Bob at his home in Melbourne, Australia. Bob's words, delivered with a rare immediacy and authority, cut through the self-imposed barriers of the mind to reveal the freedom that is our original nature.
Customer Reviews:
Simple, clear and direct pointing to that which you are!.......2007-07-07
This is a book of transcribed talks by 'Sailor' Bob Adamson.
Bob has a gift for using words to point to that which is beyond all words and concepts. As he says - "the word is not the thing - you can't drink the word 'water', the word 'fire' cannot burn you"
This book is like speaking to Bob directly - nothing is lost in the translation. The clarity of Bob's confident understanding comes through brightly on each page.
If you are a "seeker", this book is priceless. If you can read only one - you won't find one clearer than this one. If you're ready to "finally" know what you are beyond all doubts, if you're ready to see through the mind, through all concepts, through your "life story" - get this book. You may not ever "need" to read another.
Bob is truly a gift.
A Place Where There Is No One.......2007-05-18
Sailor Bob's teaching, like Nisargadatta's, is to expose ground of being. Bob's teaching is always showing that the nature of mind is to divide, that "understanding is all" (to quote Nisargadatta), and that understanding arises out of direct experience: right here, right now, full stop, presence awareness.
Interestingly, while reading the book I kept expecting and even looking for a personality of Bob to come through. I can't say I ever found it. I think that that's a rare quality, that clean effort. A person can read this book and not feel the impress of a 'guy', so to speak, even though this is a book of talks consisting of questions and answers. This tells me there is no 'Bob' there. Hence the reader is shown a place where there is no one, either.

One: Essential Writings on Nonduality
Sailor Bob is the Best There Is.......2006-06-26
Bob Adamson was a student of Nisargadatta Maharaj in the 70s. He saw what was being pointed out then, and he has subsequently been living it and talking about it for forty years. He deftly communicates this understanding in a way that allows the ready ones to hear what is being pointed out, and to get to the bottom of the nagging spiritual dissatisfaction that plagues them. Bob cleanly cuts to the core of false assumptions and allows one to recognize the freedom that is always present and always has been. If you are ready for the search to be over, you've found a great guy to help you.
Bob Adamson is a living sage and a true shining beacon for those who are tired of seeking. Find out for yourself.
Stop, this is it . . ........2006-03-04
Don't allow your mind to be put off by the "Sailor Bob" moniker. He is the real deal. Over the years, I've read what seems like hundreds of books on higher consciousness and spirituality. Very few have offered the clear and direct message contained in this little book. This is the essence of, That I Am. Some may dismiss it as being over-simplistic and feel the need for a sledgehammer approach. Not necessary, or helpful. Do yourself a big favor and read the book. Then Stop, and be what you are.
You will not find the simple truth stated so clearly anywhere else........2006-02-26
This is one of the most awesome books I have ever read and has prompted me to look for everything else Sailor Bob has written. The title alone is enough to meditate on and find a firmer footing from which to face this ever changing world of which we are a part. If the real truth is what you seek, you will find it on the pages in this book. In my heart, I wish everyone could have a copy to read over and over again. The world would transform into a much saner place.
