This ambitious, ribald, and extremely honest first novel attempts to unravel the familial and social pressures that drive two sisters into a life of serious food abuse. One survives, the other doesn't. Frannie, though she does not succumb completely to anorexia, is near the breaking point, and Hunger Point takes us along on her painful and often funny emotional odyssey of rebirth, detailed with her family's embattled love and her own self-loathing. Food is not the only matter of the body that is treated brilliantly; the author's soul-baring depiction of both the miseries and pleasures of sex from a woman's point of view is unforgettable and occasionally terrifying.

Book Description

"My parents may love me, but I also know they view me as a houseguest who is turning a weekend stay into an all-expense-paid, lifelong residency, and who (to their horror) constantly forgets to flush the toilet and shut off the lights."

Twenty-six-year-old Frannie Hunter has just moved back home. Bright, wry, blunt, and irreverent, she invites you to witness her family's unraveling. Her Harvard-bound sister is anorexic, her mother is having an affair, her father is obsessed with the Food Network, her grandfather wants to plan her wedding (even though she has no fiancé, let alone a steady boyfriend), and, to top it off, Frannie is a waitress who wears a dirty duck apron and serves plates of fried cheese to her ex-boyfriend's parents.

By turns wickedly funny and heartbreakingly bittersweet, Hunger Point chronicles Frannie's triumph over her own self-destructive tendencies, and offers a powerful exploration of the complex relationships that bind together a contemporary American family. You will never forget Frannie, a "sultry, suburban Holden Caulfield," who critics have called "the most fully realized character to come along in years," (Paper) and you'll never forget Hunger Point, an utterly original novel that stuns with its amazing insights and dazzles with its fresh, distinctive voice.

5 out of 5 stars So realistic you'd never guess it was fiction.......2006-12-07

Medoff's debut novel does an excellent job of portraying the mindset of 26 year old Frannie Hunter who moves back home to am unraveling family, not to mention her 24 year old sister Shelley's hospitalization for severe anorexia. 1.5 years out of college myself, I was able to relate to Frannie's drama and feelings of insecurity about the future since I have also experienced the death of a family member (my mother) and the associated depression of that loss.

I have read Hunger Point twice-- once in college and now after my mother has been dead for three years. The first time, I wasn't ready for it, but now that I am at the same point in my life as Frannie and Shelley I found Medoff's words to be a welcome balm for my grief and depression. Frannie's story is so poignant and inspiring that at times it's hard to believe it's fiction.

Medoff is a brilliant writer and I would like to know why this book was turned into a Lifetime Original Movie and not a blockbuster film.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it.......2005-12-14

I'd definitely recommend this book. Though it's not a happy story, I enjoyed the writing and liked the main character, Frannie.

4 out of 5 stars Very good portrayal of how eating disorders affect families.......2005-11-07

I am a psychologist who works with college students, and I felt that this book offered a fairly accurate portrayal of the devastating effects that an eating disorder can have on a family. In particular, Medoff does a nice job of communicating the hopelessness experienced by other family members. However, I found it difficult at times to fully empathize with the main character, Frannie--her excessively brash style had a tendency to rub me the wrong way, and other readers may feel the same. Despite this, I think that people who know someone with an eating disorder will both relate to and appreciate this book; recommended for that population in particular.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but main character difficult to relate to at times..........2005-09-05

I found this book by Jillian Medoff to be, overall, a good read, skirting about the serious issues of anorexia and depression. I thoroughly enjoyed her style of writing, which seemed to capture well the day to day conversations that are necessary in a novel to pull you in and feel contained within the walls of the story. However, that being said, I often found myself thinking that the reactions of the main character Frannie were often over-dramatized, a Joan-Rivers-esque "I just can't DEAL with this. I mean, SERIOUSLY, people, don't you UNDERSTAND that this is traumatizing me beyond your comprehension. I can't be BOTHERED with this right now" often eliciting anger, jealousy and spite out of her. I kept reading, but in dealing with her sister's anorexia at the hospital, she always focused situations on her self, and her very surface concern for her sister seemed completely unrealistic to me. I enjoyed the character of her lonely grandfather, and her mother is another deliciously antagonistic character that will have you waiting to see what she does next. I think Medoff is a good writer, and my sense in this book is that she was trying to relate this character to something in her own life that happened, instead of letting the character be a stand alone character with realistic reactions to a very difficult situation.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2005-09-01

Form the start I wanted to read this book to get a better idea of how a girl with Anorexia feels. In this book however, it is told from a sisters point of view of her family, including her sister with an eating disorder. I was amazed at how well Medoff captured the pain that someone dealing with this in their family goes through. She is a brilliant writer and I would recommend this book to anyone with a heart. It is so intriguing and addicting to read, you will never put it down.

3 out of 5 stars Doctor at sea.......2007-08-30

Aleesha Gautier is a naval doctor who decides to spice up her life and join an all female naval special ops team, the Medusa project. This is a mission uniquely suited to the team as the terrorists who have captured the cruise ship have let the men go.

It's not quite a thriller and not quite a romance but it falls somewhere between the two stools. While an interesting thiller it sometimes read like the author was ticking off boxes for the plot and it didn't really look like the rest of the team was doing that much while the main character got centre stage.

Aleesha is a strong character and knows her own mind, her team are all strong women used to competing with men and not willing to back down if they think they're right. The Hijacker that she gets involved with leaves her a little confused because she's not sure whether she should trust him or whether he's trying to fool her.

      Diverting but nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars A life on the ocean wave.......2007-03-11

This is the fourth of the Medusa series that I have read and it was just as good as the others (The Medusa Project, The Medusa Game and The Medusa Prophecy). The Medusas are a team of special forces operatives who are all women - although not as strong as men in the special forces there are some situations in which an all-women team can be an advantage.

And Medusa Rising shows another of these examples. A cruise liner has been hijacked, all the men have been put off the boat (apart from the 24 male terrorists) so a male special forces team would stand out like a sore thumb. In this story Aleesha Gautier, the doctor among the Medusas, takes the lead as they infiltrate the ship and she works on surveillance to prepare for boarding by some Navy SEALs. Of course things aren't quite as they seem - when Aleesha finds herself feeling sympathy for one of the terrorists in particular she knows this could be a problem; she also has not yet ever been able to kill a man - her medic training is to preserve life - but she knows that she will have to take lives to rescue the women and children on board.

Cindy Dees knows how to write exciting stories. Each of her four Medusa tales so far is set in a very different environment and using different skills that the women have but they are all gripping and interesting. You never really feel that you know the main character too deeply though - these stories are more about action than characterisation. However in this story I felt I understood Aleesha and also the terrorist that she finds herself drawn to - these were painted rather more fully than characters in her other books.

It's hard to know whether you're suspending reality, when reading these books, or whether special forces people really can do all the things we are told they can. The Medusas are an impressive team and it's good to read about women who go out and do things rather than just being eye candy for men. There were several loose ends in this story, which I haven't noticed in previous books, so perhaps these are setting the scene for a subsequent book (for example who the American terrorists had trained with, what happened to the female terrorist who had mixed with the women). As with the other stories apart from the first one, the love interest of these women doesn't seem to get a mention in subsequent books, which sometimes makes it hard to imagine the Happy Ever After when the hero and heroine don't seem to mention each other in future instalments. However this is a good read and the romance isn't the foremost aspect of the story which lifts it a little above your average modern romance.

5 out of 5 stars Heart stopping action with heart!.......2006-01-25

Medusa Rising is the sequel to The Medusa Project, Cindy Dees ground breaking series novel with a team of 6 female soldiers who are trained as commandos and become a new super secret government weapon against terror. The first book saw the ladies going through their grueling training and their first op.
Medusa Rising is their first real test... Center to the book is Dr. Aleesha Gautier - Jamaican born she was a Navy doctor before her recruitment to the team. The book opens with Aleesha questioning whether or not she can kill on command and wrestling with the inner demons of conflict and how this goes against her medical oath. Her character is tested repeatedly as the women are brought in to provide intel on a cruise ship taken hostage by a madman and his team of terrorists. Aleesha becomes primary on the op when one of the terrorists , Michael Somerset, takes her into his confidence and helps her get close to them so they can rescue the ship. Michael is a SIS agent deep under cover who was supposed to prevent this tragedy, not take part in it. His conflict and grief for what has happened makes this suave James Bond character come to life with depth and dimension. He and Aleesha share a movie worthy attraction that is heart pounding and sweeps you away as they work together trying to save all of these hostages.
The fact that this is an inter-racial romance is not even really an issue- Michael and Aleesha are both warriors and this transcends all other barriers. Sexy, exciting and totally believeable- I loved this book and could not put it down!
Looking forward to more from this series! GO CINDY DEES!

4 out of 5 stars exhilarating romantic suspense thriller .......2005-09-17

Led by Viktor Dupont, who uses his wife and two stepchildren as a disguise to get on board, terrorists hold hostage the crew and passengers of the cruise ship Grand Adventure. Chances of rescuing everyone seem remote. Still the US Navy Medusa force manages to get Dr. Aleesa Gautier on board as a passenger.

Aleesha meets Michael Somerset, who insists he is an undercover operative trying to destroy the Operation Defiance group from within. Though she is attracted to him, she doubts she can trust him even if he is telling the truth that he is a British operative. Aleesha ponders whether a few years in close contact could change one's loyalties. However, she also knows without him, she cannot succeed in regaining control of the vessel and saving the lives of the innocent. She also wonders if her attraction to Michael is fogging up her thought processes.

MEDUSA RISING, the sequel to the exciting THE MEDUSA PROJECT, is an exhilarating romantic suspense thriller starring a wonderful heroine. The story line is fast-paced, gripping the audience once the wolf in sheep clothing Viktor reveals to the reader his plot. Though the Medusas being on board seems a stretch, no one will care as Michael tries to convince Aleesa to team up with him to battle terrorists and more because they have fallen in love.

These books are great for any Halo fan fan and are very much informative about things like the spartan program. This is a must buy set for any true Halo fan, or just a reader who wants a great set of books to read. Halo, Books 1-3 (The Flood; First Strike; The Fall of Reach)

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome...That's all I can say right now........2007-09-26

These books were truely great. William C. Deitz rewened Halo: the Flood which is the only one that has parts from the game. But that book was still good. I'll admit, the parts about Captin Keyes in Halo: Fall of Reach (him alone) doing his little thing got really boring but nothing important was in that part so I skipped it. But the whole rest of the book was kick-a$$. Halo: Firt Strike was great, along side Halo: Fall of reach, maybe even a little beter than Fall of Reach. I have read all of these books 3 or 4 times. Unfortunately I got a little water on one of the books....

5 out of 5 stars Halo ruined my life.......2007-09-16

Fall of Reach was such a good addition to the Halo story line. It details all of the events that lead up to the first Halo game, and how the SPARTAN program came to be.

The Flood was, well, essentially a written version of the game. It's good in the sense that you get to see the story from the Covenants perspective, but it just drags on for some time as it details every shot and grenade that the chief fires.

First Strike was, by far, my favorite of the three. It details the events that happen on Reach while the Covenant are glassing the planet. Something is on Reach that the Covenant want really bad.

Watch out for the spelling errors in First Strike and Fall of Reach though, lawl.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Set.......2007-09-03

this is actually my second set i bought; i think i lent my first set to a friend who i no longer remember and therefore cannot get back from. obviously i liked these books enough to buy them again despite the fact that i might find my old ones later.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice series.......2007-08-25

Provides a broadened view of the game series. Going back to playing the game knowing all this backstory makes it feel that much more epic.

As for the books themselves, they are well-written, and the story is top-notch.

5 out of 5 stars The Fall of Reach - EXCELLENT.......2007-06-09

I'm one of the few people who is decidedly NOT a fan of the Halo video games, although I did buy Halo 2 when it first came out. I simply never got into playing it, and never understood what all the fuss was about. However, I still wound up picking up the book on a friend's recommendation and I have to admit: after reading and really liking the book, I will probably go back and play through the Halo games.

This is an excellent work of science fiction, taken on it's own. I never played the first Halo game, but you can still get into this book without any primer or backstory. Also, the action is literally non-stop, with all kinds of ground combat as well as space battles between ships. These become games of chess, as the humans have to be clever to outwit their more technologically advanced alien enemy, the Covenant. The characters are all extremely memorable, and not just the main character, John. There's also Captain Keyes, Dr. Halsey, and Admiral Stanforth. The hologram Artificial Intelligence named Cortana, in particular, has a big personality that jumps off the page at you.

The storyline does bounce around chronologically, but it's never difficult to follow. It begins in the year 2535 as the humans try to defend the planet Jericho VII from the Covenant. We then rewind to 2517, which starts with the history behind the "Master Chief" and how he was trained from a child. We're taken through boot camp and his "augmentation" to become almost super-human. Adding the MJOLNIR combat armor later on just adds to their coolness. The story concludes with the epic battle to defend the surprise attack against the planet Reach. The title of the book spoils how that turns out.

Flaws? I would say the descriptions of the aliens aren't deep enough - Grunts, Jackals, Elites, the scientist thing with tentacles, and the giant alien from Sigma Octanus IV. You don't get a good sense for what they actually look like. I caught a couple typos, but they're pretty minor.

Overall, "The Fall of Reach" is a very entertaining read that I was pleasantly surprised by. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series: "First Strike" and "The Flood."

        HALO: The Fall of Reach

"They were sleek, looking more like sharks than aircraft. Their lateral lines brightened with plasma--then discharged and rained fire down upon Jericho VII." The Covenant have come and using plasma technology, have wiped out the outer human colonies. John 117, the chief Spartan, tries to fight back, but the colonies and all the other Spartans have been destroyed. Meanwhile, Chief Mendez helps organize a resistance force and begins to fight back. However, he is then sent on an United Nations Space Command (UNSC) spaceship responsible for distracting the Covenant forces away from Earth. While on this mission, Chief Mendez discovers HALO, the destruction ring. I highly enjoyed this book for the training tasks, action scenes, and future technology ideas.

One of the training tasks was to regroup the Spartan military force and find an aircraft. When Sam pretended to have a broken leg, he looked up at the trainers and kicked him in the shin. One of the first training missions was to ring the bell at the end of an obstacle course. Even though John 117 finished first, his team finished last and he went without dinner for failing.

When John 117was sparring three people at once, he hit one person so hard it broke his ribs and sent him 15 yards forward. When the Spartans were clearing out the rebel guards, John 117 was so accurate, the report read, "Five bullets...five bodies hit the floor." John 117 and the other Spartans were capable of running faster than a bullet at point-blank range on training missions.

Much of the Covenant technology is very cool and futuristic. Most Elites carried a plasma battery rifle, which was rapid fire capable. It's short fall however, was it's tendency to overheat if used too much without allowing it to cool. The human race had a main battle ship gun call a MAC Gun also known as Magnetic Accelerator Cannon (MAC). The Covenant ships were able to survive multiple rounds of the planet destroying device (MAC Gun) by accelerating the Covenant ships plasma shields.

The book is also the prequel to the X-Box® game HALO: Combat Evolved. The book explained a lot that was confusing about the game itself. I enjoyed this book so much, I give it a "six" of "five" stars for the training tasks, action scenes, futuristic technology theories, and the explanation of the game. I gave it a "six" because I feel a "five" just wasn't high enough for how good this book really is.

I picked up this book on a whim after ordering a copy of the PC game and waiting for it to arrive, so this was my first introduction to the Halo universe. It turned out to be a most excellent one, and I knew that I would definitely be reading more in the series. I think what sold me most on the book was its depiction of the early training of the Spartans as children. The chapter in particular that truly hooked me was the one in which the young Spartans must win control of a drop ship from a squad of adult soldiers in order to complete their training mission. While it may not be the most original story--the training sequences feel very much inspired by Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game--it is written in a way that is always compelling. It fleshes out the world created for the game, and that is what makes the game itself so addictive. You honestly believe that these characters inhabit this world, because it is so fully realized.

So, yeah, these books certainly haven't won any awards, and I'd never have expected them to. That really isn't the point, though. They exist for those of us who can't get enough of this universe just through playing the games, and for that, they are excellent.

        5 out of 5 stars Involving Tale.......2007-04-04

I was truly surprised at how well fleshed out this world was. I've played the first game of the Halo series on the PC and really enjoyed it. The plotline of the game had a nice twist to it. That's what i was expecting; that the book have one good twist to the plotline.

I was happy to be proven wrong. It wasn't that there was a real twist to the story. I was more surprised at the depth the story had coming from a world created to "house" a first person shooter video game. I found it exceedingly easy to identify with many of the characters, even the minor characters who manned the different posts of the large spaceships. It's obvious the author took great care in fleshing out the Halo universe and bringing an element of humanity to it.

That being said, there is also plenty of action to keep the pages turning. The constant battles the soldiers are involved in and how they continuously out-do the enemy is exciting to read. To be inside the unit commander's head as the action unfolds makes the action really hit home. For example, when fellow soldiers are injured, you feel the momentary hesitation as the commander realizes it was his decision that caused his trooper to be wounded.

Although Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" is on a level all it's own, this book reminded me of that story. It was mostly the similarity of the battle against the inevitable tide of outsiders that seemed hopeless to win, yet the main character continues to fight on, because he doesn't know what else to do.

5 out of 5 stars Halo Fall of Reach.......2007-03-23

Can the strongest human soldiers stop a powerful army of aliens? This is the theme in Halo Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund. In the future, planetary colonists discover a hostile race of aliens called the Covenant that take over human military strongholds. The Covenant does not know that the secret planet Reach has a training facility for super soldiers called Spartans. One Spartan will become known as the Master Chief, who will lead the Spartans into battle. Just when the Spartans think they have a chance to stop the Covenant, the covenant attacks Reach. Luckily for the Master Chief, Cortana and Captain Keyes are a really big help to the Master Chief. I would recommend Halo to anyone who likes the Halo video game. This is the first book in the series of Halo books, and this is a great starting place in reading the series. In my opinion, the book has a strong ending because of a battle that will take place on Reach. The book is written in the third person, and the author writes the novel in an action thriller style. The book is great, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Water Water Everywhere.......2005-04-25

Just last weekend I went to Monrovia Canyon Falls. Record rainfall this year (2005) has put an end to a multiyear drought and the streams are flowing nicely. The falls in Monrovia Canyon were stunning, and I found myself simply sitting beside them enjoying their wonderful music. This for me is the ultimate in hiking. If you feel the same way, be sure to pick up the new edition of California Waterfalls.

The author, Ann Marie Brown, is arguably the best outdoor writer in California. I have gradually adopted her philosophy that dayhikers enjoy "more smiles per mile" than backpackers as my own. Her approach is always to provide the maximum scenic return for any hike she includes in one of her many guides. And, while there are several outdoor writers producing "peak guides" she is the only one with a waterfall guide. It is a joy to read and even more fun to hike. The main change in the new edition is that hikes are organized now by the same geographic scheme used in California Hiking, a book Brown co-authors with Tom Stienstra. Photos are somewhat sharper as well. I've personally hiked to about 30 of the more than 200 waterfalls she describes and have never been disappointed. You won't be either.

        5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK.......2004-11-26

What a wonderful book! Each trail is carefully researched to lead you to an exquisite waterfall. What a treat! You can tell the care that this author takes in researching her material, in hiking each trail, in ensuring that you, too, discover the wonder of waterfalls.

A great gift! Or buy one for yourself.

                      Book Description

Many Christians struggle to make the connection between our faith and the rest of our lives, particularly moral issues large and small. We inhabit a world, says Martha Ellen Stortz, that is split into two parts: one presided over by advice columnists and the media, the other a world according to God. But that world according to God is not always easy to discern. What does it mean, indeed, to live with God as our touchstone? How does that affect the way we behave, our identity, and the way we see the world?

Martha Ellen Stortz explores essential Christian practices of discipleship such as baptism, prayer, communion, forgiveness, and fidelity to help readers understand more deeply what it means to live in "a world according to God." The book makes the connections between Christian practices and the moral life in a way that will help believers retrieve both a sense of the sacred and a commitment to the world, and that will strengthen us so that we can live according to their most profound beliefs. Filled with lively anecdotes and fresh interpretations—informed by solid theological understanding—the book offers new insights into what it means to put faith at the center of life.
