James Galvin opens his first novel with a shocking, seemingly inexplicable murder--horseman Mike Arans closes on a pistol-packing motorist named Merriwether Snipes, throws a rope and snaps his neck--and then proceeds to illuminate why it happened, what it means, and how Mike deals with the consequences. Though billed as a novel, Fencing the Sky is in fact a more deeply fictionalized continuation of The Meadow, Galvin's partly historic, partly imagined evocation of a way of life that took hold on an upland Wyoming ranch for a century and then blew away.

If The Meadow is elegiac, Fencing the Sky is angry and blackly humorous. This is the grim, greedy '90s, when swaggering developers like Merriwether Snipes ride the range in their ATV's, carving up the old homesteads into 40-acre ranchettes and making life hell for the few decent people who remain. Galvin makes three of these holdouts his heroes--Oscar Rose, who supports a cattle habit (and family) by working as a vet; Adkisson Trent, a doctor who inherited from his father a spectacular spread and a penchant for proud solitude; and Arans, the renegade, who fled from New Jersey to become a cowboy. The heat of the book rises from the connections and passions of these men--their women and work troubles, their unspoken bond with each other, their fury at Snipes and everything he represents.

Galvin, a poet, has assembled his narrative out of vivid shards, yet, despite the jump-cuts, this is an old-fashioned novel at heart, with heroes and villains, heartbreak and suspense, and characters so real you want to ride out and shake hands. The same themes, the same imagery, the same equine adoration crop up in Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry, but Galvin has a lighter touch, eschewing myth for the minute particulars of hard work and hard luck in a single community. Galvin can also crack a good joke, even though he knows as well as anyone that there's not a lot to laugh about under the big sky these days. --David Laskin

Book Description

From critically acclaimed author of The Meadow comes a haunting novel of the American West.

Circumstances spiral out of control when an accidental murder springs from the best intentions. With one man dead and another on the run, this is a story about violence and how it destroys lives when the land is at stake. This lyrical first novel--long-awaited by the many admirers of James Galvin's The Meadow--is nothing less than the story of the disappearance of the American West.

4 out of 5 stars A new perspective.......2007-01-30

Being from New Jersey, and having a log cabin in upstate NY where I feel I have my own little piece of paradise, this book was a shot to the gut.

When rich city folk buy up most of the unclaimed land out west, and disrespect that land by tearing it up with dirtbikes and ATV's, and spook the cattle and make life hard for the ranchers who have lived there and made livings the hard, good ol' way, it made me change the way I felt about my own cabin. Seeing and feeling how disrespectful these newcomers were is greatly felt through the characters we get to know in this book.

Told through a series of flashbacks while our protagonist is fleeing from the law on horseback, we come to know and love the fugitive who was only standing up for his own moral rights. While this is the main outline for the plot, the deeper, real intention is the abuse the government forced upon landowners and ranchers in the west, claiming rights to dig up land regardless of ownership.

Overall, a sad story that hits home with impact and gives you chills as you turn the last few pages. I particularly enjoyed the last quarter of the book the most. Please read and try to understand the loss many landowners out west feel about the destruction of good land, turned into a 'wilderness escape' for wealthy personel.

3 out of 5 stars But what a preposterous ending!.......2006-10-18

I love Wyoming, and Galvin brought me to tears more than once with his loving and poetic descriptions of the land, the people who want to protect it, and his indictment of horrible Takers and Users who see only dollar signs in that beauty.

Galvin's message about the land and the Wyoming rancher's fading way of life should be read and treasured. But stop reading this book when you reach Page 235. I wish I had.

PS: or read Galvin's beautiful "The Meadow," also about the Medicine Bow area. Its characters are the people who lived there (composites of them are in "Fencing"), and while the ending is sad, it's believable.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book.......2006-07-21

Exceptional book, beautifully written, powerful story. I've bought as a gift for others many times.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent story, wrong hero.......2005-11-08

There is no denying that Galvin has weaved an excellent tale in this book. His writing and the story are excellent. You want to know more with each snippet of the story regarding what's going to happen. Even though the scene's change and you don't really want them to change, you are thrilled when they do change because each part of the story is very captivating. The only exception to this is the end of the story. I won't say what happened, but the end read to me as though Galvin got a call from his publisher saying, "Finish it or lose the contract." I felt myself having to totally suspend reality and belief at the end and in general thinking, "this just doesn't fit."

The major drawback to the story is that more often than not, I kept thinking that the hero in the story was missing. The person who is very clearly the 'hero' is not much more than a vigilante, and as such the glorifications of his actions are misplaced. Additionally, the story has as a general idea a lament for the loss of the small time rancher in Wyoming and Colorado. This is not a lament I share. The small time rancher in Wyoming has a great deal of political influence and despite Galvin's depiction of them as hardworking honest folk who only want the best for the land, the political realities are often far from that depiction.

This is a book that will start conversations, especially if you are at all familiar with the current state of events in the Rocky Mountain region. By that standard alone this book does warrant five stars, but because I disagree so heavily with the thesis and because the ending is so poorly constructed, I have to give it four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Fugitive Cowboy On The Run in Wyoming.......2005-03-17

This is one of a number of modern Westerns I read in the winter of 2004-05. The others included: J. Robert Lennon's, "On The Night Plain," Annie Proulx' "Close Range"; Mark Spragg's "Fruit Of Stone", Ralph Beer's "The Blind Corral"; Gretel Ehrlich's "Heart Mountain", and David Long's "Blue Spruce", a collection of modern stories. I might also include Wallace Stegner's "Angle Of Repose" which is more of a historical Western though with more contemporary aspects, John Treadwell Nichols' "The New Mexico Trilogy",which seems to me now somewhat dated, or Rick De Marinis' "Year Of The Zinc Penny", set mostly in wartime L.A. in 1943 but about a family with Montana roots. If you only have time to read one--since they are somewhat repetitive, particularly in the areas of cattle or sheep ranching, horsemanship and descriptions of ranch life-- you might choose "Fencing The Sky" since it is one of the best, with Beer's great rather nostalgic novel perhaps second. This is a society in which tradition lasts longer than in some other areas of the country, certainly dating from the late 19th century.

All these novels & stories lament the passing of the Old West, but some--certainly "Fencing The Sky" and "Angle Of Repose" are also strikingly contemporary, dealing with such issues as 60's student radicalism, war service (Lennon, Beer, and Ehrlich) aggressive land development, and considerable ecological problems such as deforestation and strip mining which have laid waste to this part of the country, as Jared Diamond's recent book "Collapse" also attests. Elk and elk hunting, and other naturalistic descriptions, are another subject common to all. At least three of the novels contain quite a lot of romance between siblings growing up on neighboring ranches in what will seem to some, including myself,to be a rather idyllic life, certainly the opposite of urban living. Some of the ranch details are truly inspired, such as a pack rat stealing from a cowboy in the middle of the night, or a square dance. Proulx' amazing award-winning stories are packed with historic details, in a limited space. Cowboys are unfortunately somewhat prone to alcoholism, also. Both Spragg and Galvin use a flashback technique in alternating chapters. Each novel is somewhat unique so that you can enjoy each but all have a great deal in common as well. Spragg's novel is most uniquely notable for its humour--a wayward wife, two old friends, an Indian, a dog, a physicist, and their misadventures.

3 out of 5 stars Alexander was Perfect but Eleanor was Untrustworthy.......2006-09-06

The story was perfect, as was Alexander, up until the moment he drank the wine, (in the beginning of the story), then he was consistently burdened with heartache because of Eleanor.
The editorial review listed above is right. I don't think I've ever seen a heroine lie as much as this one did, and often after she'd sworn faithfully to Alexander that she wouldn't do so again. He gave her so many ways out each time, with his kindness and willingness to take her side, but still, she would lie to him. Then he would find himself being 'thankful' when she'd let him in on the truth behind one of her 'secrets.' How appalling.
At one point, when she decides to tell Alexander and his people a truth, only because they'd caught her in one of her lies, she turns it into a Once-there-was-a-woman story, leaving the people to figure out that she's talking about herself. Couldn't she have just said it was she? Granted, she was treated horribly in the past, but I could drum up no sympathy for this woman because she was deceptive to the end - she had invited Lord Reinhard without telling Alexander, (she could have told him without revealing her final secret)and Alexander is again pained by her actions. All manners of horrible things are going through his mind, not the least of which is his fear that his newborn might be ill. He deserved a better wife.

THE SNOW WHITE BRIDE by Claire Delacroix
November 10, 2005

Amazon rating 4/5 stars

"The Snow White Bride by Claire Delacroix is the third in a 1400s family trilogy set in England. The oldest brother Alexander has the task of keeping Kinfairlie from going into debt. In the first two books, his objective was to marry off his sisters, Madeleine and Vivienne. In this third episode, the sisters get an idea of their own - to coax their brother into marrying a woman of their choosing. This ends up being a stranger who shows up on their property, seeking help. Lady Eleanor's life story is a mystery, but the sisters are aware that she is running away from someone. They agree to get their brother to marry her, no matter what it takes!" - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

I enjoyed this book a lot. The entire series was fun. Recommended for those who love historical romances with a touch of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Medieval.......2005-11-02

Setting - Kinfarlie, Scotland - 1421 --- In a desperate flight to freedom, Lady Eleanor had made her way to the village of Kinfarlie, Scotland but with the snow falling fast and furious, she needs to find shelter - and soon! Seeing a church through the falling snow she was grateful to find the door unlocked - sanctuary, and at last a place to rest. It was here that the two sisters of Alexander Lammergeier, Laird of Kinfarlie would discover Eleanor and formulate a plan to both aid the beautiful lady and give their brother a dose of his own medicine after tricking the both of them into marriage!

Lady Eleanor was amazed at the Laird of Kinfairlie's sisters warmth and caring, as well as shocked that they wanted a complete stranger to marry their brother. After years of abuse at the hands of two deceased husbands, she finally agreed, sensing that the young laird could at least offer her protection from the danger that followed close on her heels. What she didn't quite expect was to discover a man who seemed to want nothing more from her than to make her smile; who seemed to respect her as a person; and who sparked in her a passion that she'd never before experienced.

Alexander was enchanted with his mysterious new wife and though he soon discovered how he'd been tricked into the marriage, he wanted to gain her trust and her love. It would soon became a true test of his faith when he realized that she held many secrets close to her heart, a heart that he was no longer sure was pure. As much as Alexander wanted to believe in her, rumors of her murdering her late husbands and mysterious accidental poisonings at Kinfairlie pointed to her guilt, as a ruthless fiend sought to capture her for himself or would Alexander's love be enough to save them both?

--- In the third book to the `Jewels of Kinfairlie' trilogy, Delacroix has penned another exciting, sensual and edge of the seat romantic adventure. Delacroix proves once again how masterful she is at creating wonderful characters and integrating a fabulous plot, mystery and sensuality into the mix. Eleanor was brilliantly drawn so that the reader truly felt overwhelming sympathy over the horrors that were visited down on her; Alexander was a dream hero; and the villain a total ruthless fiend! This is a totally entertaining read and it begs this reader to say - please, don't stop here - there's three more jewels (the rest of the Lammergeir sisters) just waiting for stories! --- Marilyn, for (...)

5 out of 5 stars terrific Kinfairlie medieval romance .......2005-10-25

The Laird of Kinfairlie, Alexander, is proud of marrying off two of his sisters Vivienne (see THE ROSE RED BRIDE) and Madeline (see THE BEAUTY BRIDE) in what appears to be happy relationships. However, his two siblings have not forgotten how poorly he managed their futures once he replaced their deceased parents. Vivienne and Madeline decide to find a bride for their brother before he can wed off the still too young remaining sisters.

They select Lady Eleanor who wants to marry for love and passion, but knows men only covet her fortune. Alexander's siblings ask her to marry their brother. She knows if she chooses Alexander as her husband she will be freed from danger of those abusive suitors willing to do anything to claim her fortune as theirs. However, Alexander is interested in her smile that makes his insides weak. He wants Eleanor by his side for a lifetime, but persuading her he loves her starts with earning her trust.

The third Kinfairlie medieval romance is a terrific entry as the two sisters avenge their brother's misdeeds by finding the right woman for him if he is wise enough to realize it. The story line is exciting but character driven starting with the contented married siblings plotting their brother's fall into matrimony and only getting deeper as the heroine trusts nothing male because they only want her only her fortune while Alexander knows he can achieve security with Eleanor, but wants more as he realizes she is his soulmate.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting more and receiving less........2004-08-25

That's pretty much how I felt after finishing the final installment of the Rama series. Sure, there were a lot of interesting ideas brought up in the end, but I was very disappointed with the theological aspect of the novel. As the character of Michael O'Toole had mentioned earlier, mankind cannot put restrictions on God, and yet that's exactly what happens. One would think that God doesn't need to experiment and tinker around before getting creation right. And why would nodes be required to collect his data? I was hoping the novel wouldn't end with the explanation being as it was. I was hoping for an alien face behind Rama, not the fantastical idea that stewed in Clarke's brain and seemed a little out of his grasp. I just believe that with such an emphasis on religion in the books, including the character of St. Michael, the theology aspect could have been handled better in the end.

As for Nicole's fate. . .I was disappointed. I kept feeling that there was something big about to happen in the end. A more plausible and yet astounding discovery that would explain Rama's purporse and origins. But that feeling was never satiated, and I was disappointed with Nicole's choice in the end. There were so many critical moments when Nicole had returned to the dreams of her grandfather, and yet that theme was never completed or touched upon in the end. Maybe I was hoping for the story to not end there, but for Nicole to go on and experience something after. Why pump so much into spirituality in the book if it doesn't pay off in the end? All what we're left with is a cold, machine-like termination.

2 out of 5 stars A very poor conclusion to an otherwise magnificient series.......2003-09-01

In the foreword for Rama II, Clarke explains that-in spite of what clearly appeared to be a lead-in to a sequel ("the Ramans always do things in threes", suggesting that there would be two similar craft to follow)-he never intended for the story to go beyond "Rendezvous with Rama." That allowed Clarke to do what he does best, to conjure fantastic worlds, and present compelling questions-without ever having to answer them. As I discovered with "2061" and "3001", the mysteries Clarke weaves and the questions his stories pose, are far more compelling than any answers he can present for them. Like 3001, the conclusion to the Odyssey series, this ending is simply abysmal. I'd have been better off letting my own imagination fill in the gaps, and ponder the unanswerable questions. Instead, characters that I had come to truly know and care about-having followed their entire adult lives-are led through situations that are both tedious and implausible. It left me feeling that the lives of the characters had been an absolute waste, that the hardships, struggles, even the joys of their unique odyssey were utterly pointless. That, for me, was even harder to swallow than the absolutely ludicrous suggestion that God would need spacecraft to shuttle people around. If you were captivated by the Rama universe as I was, do yourself a favor and stop with the third book ("Garden of Rama"). Discovering what happens to Nicole is not worth it (and her fate is quite possibly worse than you might imagine).

5 out of 5 stars A very telling tale about the human race.......1998-07-02

With messages of duty, responsibility and the value of family, it's likely that this book will apeal to a more mature reader. While this last installment of the RAMA tales holds all the magic of the past 3 books, it also holds some very real, if disapointing truths about mankind. We are not the creators chosen race, indeed, we are simply an eliment in one universe of many by which the creator seeks a simplicity only a god may aspire to. Some refreshing ideas on the origins, purpose and existance of the universe and our place in it.

After reading other excellent works by Arthur Clarke, Rama Revealed is such a disappointment. Rendezvous with Rama was such an excellent book, and Rama II was not all bad either. Garden of Rama and this last one in the series can only be considered progressive deteriorations. Where Rendezvous was a page turner, I endured this book so I could get to the end. Too many pages spent on inane sub-plots and not enough on the overall story. After reading Rendezvous and then the rest, I came away with the feeling that only the first one bears Clarke's stamp.

I shan't repeat what has been said so viscerally before. Book one was a good and original book, not exceptional but very good; book two was not in the same vein filled with vapid, whiney and totally unappealing characters. Book three was an extension into absurdity of book two, and book four, well I have run out of adjectives to describe it. If I want to abase myself in the lives of self-centered brats with no redeeming qualities (for good or evil) I'll watch some reality tv. After re-reading all the books in the series I'm keeping book one and the rest go into the trash, I won't burden Goodwill with them. Save your money, you'd be better off spending it on toe nail clippers.

        Not!

OK. I did like the octospiders. Didn't buy the "revelation", still didn't buy humans so totally self destructive. Wonder what the Precursors looked like. God using technology? Kind of knocks God down to the human level that a deity needs technology - certainly a contradiction of the inherent qualities of God. (Now a god, maybe.)
A little inconsistency on the octos- a mistake means you are no longer useful? (Hercules) Never answered the question on Nicole's unique genetic qualities.
Having read the 2nd and third books in the series, I do think this was better than those, but absolutely none holds a candle to the first.

        1 out of 5 stars Boredom, Enforced.......2005-01-26

Shallow, one-dimensional characters, an artifically convoluted plot that never satisfactorily resolves, and bombastic writing of the sort best edited with a shredder. What more could one ask for? Why, sententious spiritual pretensions, of course!

This is the sort of reading that makes you think longingly of scrubbing the bathtub grout with bleach and a baby toothbrush. I look at my stack of Rama books as I would five empty Pringle's cans - with a combination of nausea and self loathing.

Clark should be spanked, Lee caned, and the publisher fined.

                      Product Description

Few masters of science fiction have brought us glimpses of the near future as vividly as Arthur C. Clarke. It is the startling realism of his vision that has made classics of his Childhood's End and 2001: A Space Odysseyand Clarke himself one of the genre's most successful writers. To commemorate the fast-approaching arrival of one of the most notable dates in science fiction history comes this special anniversary edition of The Sentinel, a brilliant collection of Clarke's highest caliber short fiction. Among the ten stories included in this volume are: "The Sentinel": The story that inspired 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of the most famous SF movies of all time. "Guardian Angel": The rarely-glimpsed work that gave birth to Childhood's End. "The Songs of Distant Earth": A fantastic tale of first contact with an alien world, which became the basis for one of Clarke's most successful novels. "Breaking Strain": The inspiration for the popular book series Arthur C. Clarke's Venus Prime.

                        Book Description

The true spirit of Native American ways of knowing shines through in these heartfelt meditations, poems, and stories. In 364 daily offerings organised according to the cycles of the moon, Jamie Sams offers stirring and poetic insights into the spirituality of the earth, connecting with our communities, and our own soul journeys.

Based on Native American creeds and legends, these meditations cut to the heart with their honesty, beauty, and authenticity. Sams teaches such grounded lessons as how to face an unknown future with confidence and conviction, how to rediscover the joy of curiosity, and how to develop a true intimacy with nature.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one to read.......2007-03-12

Another one that is in my collection and that I found useful. I think that it has much to teach those that are seeking. Good book to read.

2 out of 5 stars Not original enough.......2004-10-03

I practice Earth Spirituality but Ms. Sams' writting left me confused over how to relate to nature. For me, this book was frankly too New Agey for my tastes. Many of the writings seemed to be a rehashing of New Age Indianisms. I prefer a more original approach to Earth Spirituality than simply "Indianisms".

5 out of 5 stars Terrific way to clear the mind.......2003-11-03

This book has 364 poems/short pieces of prose so you can read one per day. I just pick it up and flip to a page when I need to get grounded again. There are lots of life stories, one that sticks out for me is one that talks about remembering to be balanced. Following each poem/short story there's a sentence or two on the learning to take away and reflect on. Its really great - definitely a nice thing to do upon starting the day. Each entry has a connection to the earth, the Great Mystery, and often human behaviors (e.g. kindness, humility, love, qiet mind, etc) that we all can relate to and reflect upon.

                        5 out of 5 stars A must.......2003-08-08

This book is great for daily reading before work, school, play. Helps to build good spirit!

This is a remarkable book for understanding a particular place in life. Whether you follow the pages corresponding to the movements of the moon, this book will give powerful insight into your life. On the day I was moving out of my hometown for the first time I opened to a page radomly it spoke about cherishing old friends and places and having the courage to move on. Jamie Sams is an incredible author and a wonderful person to read.
