Each summer, Andrei Makine's narrator and his sister leave the Soviet Union for the mythical land of France-Atlantis. That this country is a beautiful confabulation, a consolation existing only in his maternal grandmother's mind, makes it no less real. Though Charlotte Lemonnier lives in a town on the edge of the steppe, each night she journeys to a long-ago Paris, telling tales that the children then translate with their more Russian minds: "The president of the Republic was bound to have something Stalinesque about him in the portrait sketched by our imagination. Neuilly was peopled with kolkhozniks. And the slow emergence of Paris from the waters evoked a very Russian emotion--that of fleeting relief after one more historic cataclysm ..."

Makine's first novel is a singing tribute to the alchemy of inspiration, but it is no less familiar with the sorrows of reality. And it is only as he gets older that the narrator begins to piece together his grandmother's far more tragic past--her experiences in the Great War, the October Revolution, and after. Dreams of My Russian Summers is a love letter to an extraordinary woman (it's hard not to see the book as autobiographical) as well as to language and literature, which the boy turns to in avoidance of history's manipulations. It has all the marks of an instant classic.

Book Description

Hailed as extraordinary from coast to coast and winner of both the Prix Goncourt and the Prix Medicis, France's top literary prizes, the national bestseller Dreams of My Russian Summers traces a sentimental journey that embraces many of the dramatic events in Russia during the twentieth century. Here is a poignant story of a Soviet boy's ascent into manhood in the 1960s and 1970s, and his extraordinary affection for his mysterious grandmother who seems to have been there for all the pivotal historical events. This epic tale is full of tenderness and passion, pain and heartbreak; mesmerizing, in every way.

5 out of 5 stars Depth of memory and connection.......2007-04-01

This novel is unque in placing me into the transparent and transcental dimension of memory. It let me feel the power of reflectoin and voices from the distant past or other worlds. This novel doesn't have to be compared to Proust's masterpiece. The stream of narration and the language (I am reading an English translation) is almost mesmerizing, sending the reader off this world. I would place this as one of the best literary work.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful reflection on what it meant to be Russian and French in the 20 th centruy.......2006-05-28

Andrei Makine's book, Dreams of My Russian Summer's, is a very special book. Even though the author wrote the book in French, and I read it in translation (English), the writing is fantastic. It takes a little getting used to it, it's very "flowery", just to give you fair warning, but once you get used to it, you'll appreciate it. And despite all the attention given to the language, quite a bit actually happens, the dialogue doesn't stand still. It's a moving and interesting story.

The story is told in retrospect in the first person. It's a memory. We are told that he has a grandmother who has both French and Russian backgrounds, born and raised in France and married a Russian and lived out the rest of her life there, making her way through world wars and quirky Russian society. What we're not told immediately is why the narrator is fixated on his grandmother's dual nationality, which is what the novel is about.

Take time to enjoy the language and to fully appreciate the details of the story. I immediately reread the first 20 pages upon finishing, just to make sure I didn't miss anything important. This 1995 book will definitely be read and reread for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical memories of idyllic summers past.......2004-04-04

Andrei Makine, born in Siberia in 1957, has written an prose ode to his French grandmother, a memorable account of life in Communist Russia as lived by the woman who gave him joy, comfort, and permission to dream of other worlds.
Each summer, Andrei and his sister visited this grandmother at the edge of Russia's vast steppes, and in the evening she told them stories of her past. Trapped in Russia after the revolution, she married a Russian and became a hardworking Soviet wife and mother - but she never lost the Frenchness of her utmost being. Slowly, over the years, she reveals harsh truths to young Andrei - but always with a lyrical and dreamlike quality that makes reading this book feel as though you're inhaling pure, gauzy poetry.

5 out of 5 stars speak, memory.......2003-12-22

A lovely, lyrical "autobiographical novel". Makine, born Russian, has lived in France since 1987. This novel covers his extraordinary relationship with his grandmother, who sets his life in motion by re-telling stories of her French past. This is a wonderful book, filled with spare, powerful writing. One of the loveliest books I've read in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2003-08-21

A work of art, Makine's use of language is stunning. Not a quick read, I frequently had to stop and ponder many profound passages. Literature as an art form is not dead.

4 out of 5 stars wow...surprised and such a really great read..........2007-09-20

I was actually very surprised, this is my first book by this author and i'm glad i got a chance to read some of his work in this book...he's really good at expressing the feelings of all the characters and you can almost feel every surrounding or see the feelings of each and every character the way he goes thru describing each and everything page by page...the abandoned farm house, the feelings between each of the characters as they interact, it's all really very amazing as he unfolds each and everyone...very good read...

5 out of 5 stars Worst part of this book is that it ends........2007-06-16

'Dream Boy' was the first book I read by Jim Grimsley. He's now my favorite author. His sweet simple language and structure is so addictive. I love how his prose was floaty at times, I had to stop at times and wonder 'WTH is going on' but this only made it a better read by the time I finished. Actually I finished at around 4 in the morning (couldn't put it down) and cried long after that. This is a heartbreaking novel that everyone should read, ESPECIALLY Grimsley fans.

5 out of 5 stars Love In the Midst of Chaos.......2007-05-21

This haunting story of a boy who falls in love with the boy next door is set against the backdrop of a disturbing home life.

5 out of 5 stars haunting, but wonderful story.......2007-04-06

Jim Grimsley's novel, Dream Boy, is perhaps one of the most haunting books I've ever read. It tells the story of Nathan, a young boy growing up in the rural south, who falls for Roy, the older boy living next door. In the midst of a chaotic home life due to an alcoholic, abusive father, much of the book deals with Nathan's constant need to escape. His relationship with Roy, although tense at times, provides some moments of peace. The book's climax is heartbreaking; what follows, however, might seem confusing at first. I won't give too much away, but the end of the book leaves a lot up for interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Magical dreams.......2007-02-27

Nathan and his parents have just moved into their rented farm house, they seem to move around a lot. Next door live the owners with their son Roy. Nathan and Roy attend the same school. Roy, who also drives the school bus, is two years older than Nathan, but Nathan is bright, and is advanced a year in his schooling; the two quickly become friends. Nathan helps Roy with his homework, including English, and Roy reciprocates, helping Nathan with algebra. The two boys agree to be buddies. During school Roy joins Nathan to eat lunch and then they spend time with Roy's friends Randy and Burke.
Then during one homework session, with the two boys sitting close together, a touch gradually becomes something more until the two are passionately embracing on Nathan's bed. So begins their intimate relationship, with Nathan totally enamoured by Roy; however Roy at times seems distant and unsure as, it seems, he tries to understand their powerful attraction, and frequently reminds Nathan not to tell anyone about the nature their relationship. Yet while Nathan throws himself wholeheartedly into their affair, he has is own dark secrets, secrets that for a while the reader can only guess. Despite their problems their relationship continues and they sometimes join Randy and Burke for outings.
When, as his nightmarish secret problem threatens again and things become difficult for Nathan Roy supports him, but never pries into this secret. Then one weekend the two boys arrange to go on a camping trip along with Randy and Burke, all is well, even enchanting, until they arrive at the large long-deserted and supposedly haunted plantation house.
This is a wonderful story of love, loyalty and devotion, beautiful written creating an atmospheric and haunting air of mystery. The characters are believable, and in the case of Roy and Nathan, especially appealing. Mostly tender, occasionally violent, sometimes erotic, and always eloquent as it builds towards its magical dream-like finale, Dream Boy is a truly captivating and positive tale, highly recommended; my thanks to those who recommended it to me.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Fun, clean and educational! .......2007-07-17

While attending the 2007 Autism Society of America National Conference last week, I met Herb Heiman at the AAPC booth. He was excited to tell me about this recent book. I started reading it immediately and enjoyed the unique style of writing highlighting the two main characters, Brad, the middle school track star and Justin, the new transfer student who has Asperger Syndrome. It's an enjoyable story that compares similarities and differences while teens struggle with issues middle school presents. It was fun to also learn more about the author's home state of Oregon. I recommend this book especially for those entering middle school.

5 out of 5 stars Running in Place.......2007-07-04

Brad, 15 has a lot going for him. A track star at the Oregon high school he attends, he also has a good track record academically. He has an older sister, Amy, 19 who has undefined differences and an eating disorder.

Justin, also 15 is an only child who has Asperger's Syndrome which is the spectrum partner to autism. A walking encyclopedia of classic rock knowledge, he is also a Beatle fan who has his first experience in a mainstream/inclusion program. A good resource room teacher helps Justin along in the inclusion process.

Enter Brad. He has signed on for extracurricular activities and decided to pitch in with the resource students. Justin's teacher describes Justin to Brad, feeling that the boys will be a good match. The boys also happen to share the same birthdate.

After some rocky starts, Brad reluctantly rises to the challenge. He feels Justin's blunt statements and willingness to stand by what he believes in even if it means compromising popularity and status might embarrass him. After all, Brad is a track star who has an attractive, albeit shallow and self centered girlfriend and the image that Justin only fantasizes about having.

Brad's friend Pat and Pat's girlfriend Linda, whom Brad describes as a dog help Brad re-evaluate his priorities. In time, he realizes that the trophy girlfriend; the image; the plaudits and middle school status are not the most important priorities in his life. He gets involved with Special Olympics and offers to work with Justin on improving his running and agility.

Excellent dialog and delightful, plausible characters make a good story even better. This is a good book for all ages and the obvious message of tolerance and acceptance can never be overstated. I like the way Brad responded to the Special Olympics participants once he got to know them; I also like his displeasure with Crystal when she made fun of others or acted repelled by people with disabilities. One especially poignant part in the book was when Brad helped a child with a crooked leg onto a seesaw while Crystal rebuffed the child. Brad also says that people with challenges like the boy on the playground and the students in the resource room often got overlooked and that he was one of the people who overlooked them.

An intense book with an ending that will remain in the hearts of readers long after they have turned the last page. This book makes me think of a song by a Brooklyn duo, Professor Louie and Fast Eddie, "You Can Make it on a Dream," which is an intense look at richly drawn individuals who have indeed made things happen.

5 out of 5 stars The human realities of living with aspergers.......2007-05-23

The week I first met Herb Heiman this book was published. I met him in his "other life," as a 40-year veteran of TaiChi. His ability to see the gifts in every human being shows up just as strongly in this book as it does in his teaching.

Running on Dreams is a beautiful story that will clean the windows of your heart. Having lived this story with my own child, I know, first hand, the joys, the frustrations, and the terrific sadness that comes with the territory Herb has so masterfully described. Running on Dreams show us, right up close and personal, what it's like being on both sides of the experience of autism.

It's a wonderful book, not just for young adults, but for anyone who wants to understand more about what it's like to cope with the very different experience of the world that people with aspergers live everyday. The story is told from a truly compassionate point of perception. Every parent, every sibling, every neighbor, every teacher, and certainly every school and social service administrator who needs to better understand the everyday challenges of coping with aspergers will benefit deeply from reading it.

I recommend you get a copy for yourself today. Then get five more copies and give them away to others who need to clean the windows of their hearts, too.

4 out of 5 stars More alike than different.......2007-05-22

Author Herb Heiman masterfully offers up a novel about two teenage boys - Justin, who has Asperger's, and Brad, the school's popular track star - on their journey to self discovery. Kudos to Heiman for his real-life descriptions of the thoughts and feelings of both boys as they come to know more about each other and question their place in the world. Wonderful, positive example to readers about the ways we are all more alike than different. Excellent for teens both on and off the spectrum, their parents and teachers.

4 out of 5 stars I loved this book.......2007-05-19

I bought this book because I was searching for a book on teens with disabilities as I have a good friend with a child with Asperger's. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised to find Mr. Heiman's well-written and insightful look into the joys and sorrows of his characters' lives. It is rare to find someone who can write about the feelings of young people with such honesty and empathy and still create an entertaining read.

I highly recommend this book and am anxiously awaiting a new one from Mr. Heiman!

5 out of 5 stars Dust off this overlooked gem.......2000-10-20

Considering all the ordinary books that reach such a wide audience, I don't understand how this could receive so little notice. John Yount has created a small masterpiece. At the outset Madeline Talley is returning to her parents' farm in North Carolina with her 13-year-old son, having left her inconsiderate, drinking and womanizing husband. "Home" is not comfortable. Her parents don't understand what is wrong with Madeline's marriage and her son misses his father. This is 1948, when women are expected to stand by their men. The point-of-view shifts among all three family members and although Madeline is the most sympathetic, the Talley males are equally believable and multi-dimensional. Ultimately a crisis brings them together and makes them reconsider their lives as a family. This slim volume is a page-turner, a character study and a period piece, all in one. It ends too soon and sticks in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, fully-realized characters.......1999-08-25

John Yount is one of our truly underappreciated writers. He's able here to inhabit each of the three characters: Edward Tally, the estranged father and husband; Madeline, his wife and James, their young son who watches the bonds of the family fray to the point it seems they can never be repaired. Each one of these people is real, flawed, human and redeemable.

5 out of 5 stars Just a beautiful book. A most underappreciated author.......1996-02-13

I'm glad to see this book, and others by Yount, are stillavailable through Amazon. It's so hard to find them in thestores. This is a great book. Few writers have the ability to so fully develop characters.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm hooked.......2006-03-23

I just finished reading a copy from my library. I went to Amazon to find out where I could find the next several chapters in the storyline. The only drawback to this graphic novel is that I don't see a continuation of the story, although there is 166 pg. worth of story. It isn't like you feel you just started the journey before it ends.

The graphics are fantastic with just a wee bit too much gore. I would rate the book at a PG-13 level. Since I can't find the next installment of Ninja Boy, I will be looking for other books by Ale Garza.

The story is really strong and original. You follow a boy ninja as he tries to avenge the death of his fellow Mungen ninjas. He hooks up with a funny little sidekick named Sake who loves to drink. The story contains a little fantasy with a little video game martial arts with special powered kicks right out of Street Fighter.

Book #2 is Seduced by a Rogue
Book #3 is The Last Rogue

This is Gabriel's and Olivia's story.

Olivia is a highwayman/person (LOL), she holds up stage coaches for a living. LOL

She ends of holding up Gabriel's mode of transport and he finds himself curious about her; although, at the time he didn't know she was a "she."

    She ends up getting shot...

This was a nice read. Typical Connie Mason style!

4 out of 5 stars A Great introduction to Connie Mason.......2006-11-24

Gabriel Wellsby, The Marquis of Bathurst is robbed the same set of highwaymen twice, what he does not know that "Ollie" is in fact Lady Olivia Fairfax, a woman who has be for forced to due so to keep her brother in school. When Bathhurst and Olivia the fireworks start, but Gabriel is a man hiding a lot pain. Pain infact that might the lovers apart forever.
"The Rogue and the Hellion" was the first book that I have read by Connie Mason. And it was really good. Ms. Mason gives the readers strong characters with good plots. The only reason that I didn't give it fives stars was that Bathurst's subplot seem to take a little long to reslove itself.

5 out of 5 stars Very sensual, great heroes!.......2006-05-12

The Rogue and the Hellion is a wonderful book. The plot is very interesting. Imagine a high society lady of London, disguised as a highway man! Picture a handsome marquis as her victim not only once but twice. The story is fascinating, full of romance, intrigue, and well written as only Connie Mason can do it.

Before you start reading this book, be sure you send your family aeay. Feed the pets and turn on your answering machine because you will not want to be disturbed.

In every part of the book, there was some mystery to be unsolved. The chemistry between Olivia and Gabriel was huge.

Feel free to read, entertaining, light and fabuluous!

    4 out of 5 stars 1st Mason book won't be my last!!.......2005-03-18

Wow this one sizzles - which I absolutely loved!!! Gabriel was the type of rogue i look forward to reading about - something dark in his past causes him to behave so wickedly then he meets the right woman and he starts to slowly change but uses his rakish qualities to make for a hot romance with the lovely Olivia. They meet in the stangest of ways - she hold him up at gun point and he is captivated and from then on the story just gets better and better -I am so looking forward to reading about his friends!!

    1 out of 5 stars Disgusting!.......2003-04-18

...so boring with all he ever wants to do is have sex. And the never ending sex chapters over and over really disgusted me. I mean they were having sex more than actually talking to each other. And then all of a sudden, he falls in love. That made no sense at all. Gabriel's idea that he will go insane because it will be inherited from his mother was really absurd. It was not believeable at all. But the storyline of a woman disguising as a highwayman and ends up falling in love with the man she robbed had it's potential of becoming a great story. I give it that.

The son of an infamous starship captain, the grandson of a diplomat admiral, and his home station's "Hot #1 Bachelor," Ryan Azarcon lives in a fishbowl. After witnessing a horrific terrorist bombing of his grandfather's embassy, Ryan's grief-stricken face is plastered all over the net. Now, a year later, he is still plagued by nightmares of bloody destruction that make him desperate to escape his family, the relentless media, and his memories. When his distant and domineering father takes controversial action in the long, depleting interstellar conflict, Ryan is targeted by assassins. Forced to confront the violence, he begins to question everything he thought he knew about the war and his father. He will realize that the enemy is not who he thinks and uncover a secret that may destroy any hope of peace

            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow-up to Warchild.......2007-05-02

This was a very disappointing follow-up to Warchild. The former book had an interesting setting, deep characters, and a fairly unique plot. This sequel has none of those things. The protagonist has got to be one of the least interesting characters in any book I've ever read. You know its bad when you're looking forward to the scenes with his bodyguard because that character has some personality! The entire book is much ado about nothing; little happens, the descriptions are vanilla and repetitive. The only thing it has to recommend it is how it offers a different perspective on events in the far-superior first book, and that's not enough to carry it.

5 out of 5 stars The Problem With Sequels..........2006-05-17

...is that what a reader wants and what the author wants are often at odds. What a reader usually wants is more of the same -- more of the characters introduced in the first book, more of the world, generally MORE.

What an author often wants to do is something completely different. S/he wants to explore completely different characters, a different timeline -- anything to distinguish the first book from its follow-up.

I ended up reading this series out of order. I read CAGEBIRD first, then WARCHILD, and now this one. I could see how BURNDIVE might disappoint if followed on the heels of WARCHILD, but I loved it. I thought Lowachee took a huge risk giving us the point of view of spoiled Ryan Azarcon and forcing us, page by page, to care for him. In a way, we were like the Captain... who comes to truly care for his son by degrees.

It's a good book, and a true testimony to Lowachee's writing that I could read them all out of order and not feel like I missed anything.

It just keeps on getting better.

            5 out of 5 stars Burndive.......2005-10-05

This book was mind blowing it didnt start off all that fast more like just catching speed. I felt so bad for the father but in the end it shows not all rich stitches are all that bad. The book was absolutely great. It takes you right into story almost movie like you should totaly read it.

            2 out of 5 stars Didn't grab me.......2005-03-25

The hero was spoiled, Azarcon was demystified, Jets on the ship were basically designated as either "good" or "evil", and supported or betrayed the Captain accordingly. There weren't any interesting new worlds to explore. A thread connecting Ryan's girlfriend and the shoddy journalist whose articles brought down his family was left unexplored...The whole thing was a huge bore.

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2007-08-23

This cd is 10 Star rating! I'm not a "weeper", but this does it!
Never in my years have I heard the like. It lifts the heart heavenward

The book has a strong emphasis on living a holy life. Not much heard
about that these days. I've given eight of these away so far. It's that
            good. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Music of beauty and songs of intimacy.......2007-03-12

Good music is without a doubt in the ear of the listener, and even good music will sooner or later be placed in the portion of the queue that gets almost no attention. Even praise and worship music are not free of that fate. This CD by Freddy Hayler, along with the others in the Angels series, has defied that fate for me. Mind you, I am one who delights in well-crafted electric guitar riffs and melodious drums backing vocals that are scripturally based. But there is a beauty the srings section of an orchestra can portray that surpasses any rock or pop oriented ensemble. Add to that the vocal power of a world-class tenor, who when staying in the low register shines with the emotion that can only come from countless of intimate hours with the Father, and you have something that simply approaches the angelic. Oh, and the book is a great bonus worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Worship CD.......2006-02-25

This CD is excellent. I felt like I was experiencing "heaven" on earth. I play it all the time when I am getting dressed in the morning and feel a sense of spiritual worship.

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome Music.......2002-02-16

I have not read the entire book but part of the book consists of the lyrics for the CD that is included. The CD is absolutely incredible and inspiring. It's one that is very hard to get tired of. I've given away 2 already and am ordering 2 more for other friends that want one too! Don't miss this gem. The artwork in the book is beautiful as well.
