I don't think anyone, but Miller, could have painted the splendor of the poverty, beauty and surrealness during 1930's Greece; Miller's Greece and his alone. He saw things like no other person saw them; {"A Greek is alive to the finger-tips; he oozes vitality, he's effervescent, he's ubiquitous in spirit"} to us it's a blade of grass or a branch or a rock, to him it was a testimonial to the times of the people of Greece, and I have never wanted to go anywhere in the world than to Miller's Greece, after reading this journey of cleansing, healing and metaphysical bliss. This is indeed an Epic adventure. An epic indeed: an endless surprise of wonderous expeditions, dangers, wine and friends in a style that is all Miller.

I was 14 when I found this book in my 94 year old grandmothers bookcase in the back den. The intriguing cover pulled me in, and I opened it to a random page, and to this day, nearly 15 years later or so, I come back to it again and again, for guidance, for awakening, for a smile. It is the one book I bring with me on long flights, and the one book I have shared with friends more than any other. It is not so much a view of the places and people of Greece, but more a testimonial to an era, and Miller sure shows he is more Greek than American. This book isn't just about Greece and its magnificent towns, it's about seeing things like no other sees them, and then throwing it up again for us to read and indulge in. The passage:

['No man can really say what joy is until he has experienced peace. And without joy there is no life, even if you have a dozen cars, six butlers, a castle, a private chapel, and a bomb-proof vault. Our diseases are our attachments, be they habits, ideologies, ideals, principles, possessions, phobias, gods, cults, relegions, what you please. Good wages can be a disease just as much as bad wages. Leisure can be just as great a disease as work...surrenderis absolute: if you cling to even the tiniest crumb you nourish the germ which will devour you. As for clinging to God, God long ago abandoned us in order that me might realize the joy of attaining godhood through our own efforts.']

Delecious eh? I remember not being able to sleep that night; being so young, but wanting to understand so much.

The Great Starfish is someone in whom I would have loved to have romped with on the island of Poros. For if I ever go to Greece, if I ever attain this nirvana in which the Buddhist speak of, that in which Miller speaks of when entering Poros for the first time-{"...when suddenly I realized that we were sailing through the streets. If there is one dream which I like above all others it is that of sailing on land. Coming into Poros gives the illusion of the deep dream."} I hope it is, even nearly 80 years later, somewhat the same. I want to smell the lemon groves. I want to sail on the streets coming into Poros. I want to feel like that gentle idiot swaying on the mast, like he says, as if I am 'en route for a shave'. I want to see the bearded men, and ladies hanging their wash out right above my head. I want to sit and have Turkish Coffee with the natives on Hydra and be led around as If I was a spectacle from a native world.

Lawrence Durrell, George Seferiades and Katsimbalis and Miller all indulging in abundant foods, endless wine, and conversation in which I would have loved to have partaken in, must have been intoxicating, rewarding, and full of gusto and history, that I envy. At college I had an advanced fiction class with Stratis Havarias, the founding editor of the Harvard Review, who's father was killed in the concentration camps, and who teaches writing in Greece in the winter, when not doing his only course in summers at the college. He told me he knew George well and had been friends with relatives of Ghika the painter. When he asked the class what their favorite book was, and I told him Colossus, he just beemed, "OHHHHHhhhhh." He said, "Miller's Greece can be yours Ken, if you want it to be. If one thing hasn't changed for your image of Greece once you get there, it's the light. Piercing, unfathomable."

On the last page of my grandmothers copy, which is now part of my collection of novels, because this is most certainly a non-fiction epic, she says, "It's so mystical here, the light, oh my, oh...oh...the light, it's like nothing I have seen anywhrere in my travels. The light is pouring in everywhere, on everything on every surface, and making it all come alive."

{"Light acquires a transcendental quality: it is not the light of the Mediterranean alone, it is something more, something unfathomable, something holy."} *cool, eh*

Miller's light, my grandmothers light, that epic beauty that has made the Colossus my favorite book of all time. I would have liked to have been Miller's friend, yes, I would have liked that very much.

I implore you, lover of books, to read this and take some of the passages and prose with you for eternity, it is that type of writing that sets Miller apart from all the rest.

Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Miller at his finest, then again, not so much like Miller.......2006-12-12

When he was not tackling sex and philosophy, Henry Miller traveled. The Colossus of Maroussi is a book of those later times, when he, an "American Savage", entered the world of peace, beauty, and most of all, simplicity he was longing for while living in America. Nothing could prepare him for what he encountered in Greece, not the streets of New York, nor the streets of Paris. Although enamored with France, Miller's passion for Europe goes way further in this book, which at times reads more like L. D. novel than Miller's own. Yet, at the same time he manages to wrap himself in the beauty he encounters, dive in it without holding a breath and resourface a new, more complete being, spellbound by his experience. If only there were more writers like him -- ahh, wishful thinking. Most of all, this book shows Miller in a different light, not limited by his fame for writing about sex (actually, most of his books are not) he explores a new land, unknown to him until then. His ability to take the reader's hand and walk throughout the countryside, observe the people, customs and scenery, is combined with philosophy and his personal views (What else would you expect from Miller?). I have shared this book with many people who did not like Miller and their minds were changed forever. What more can be said? Nothing -- read the book and find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars At his best in Niller in Greece.......2006-11-05

Henry Miller's books fall into many categories, the lover of humanity, the lover of nature and art, the hater of the treadmill of twentieth-century society and business, and the sexual fiend. This book touches mainly on the first two, some on the third, and none on the fourth. To me, that is Miller at his best, the lyrical wordsmith.

Instead of talking of France (as in several books), or California (as in Big Sur), or the various parts of the US (as in Air-Conditioned Nightmare), here Miller tells of his trip to Greece immediately before World War II spread there. He loved Greece and the Greeks he met. His desriptions are full of color and life.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction To Henry Miller: His Best Novel!.......2006-07-29

I highly recommend this book to everyone. The book was written and finished on the eve of WWII. And the "Colossus of Maroussi" is by far the most enjoyable book I have ever read by Henry Miller. It is not too often that one can pick up a book and read over and over again as I have done with "Colossus Of Maroussi." Miller wrote this most beautiful of all books after having left France, and having finished his more notable "Tropic," books. My wife, who was my girlfriend at the time, introduced me to the book. Up to this time I was very well read. Having read all the classics, fiction, and non-fiction alike. Dostoevsky was my favorite, and I have read many books that have stayed with me all my life: Balzac, Gogal, Rabelais, Montaigne, Dante, Chaucer, Milton, Cervantes, Joyce, etc. Everyone that is but Henry Miller.

Thankfully my future wife was a Henry Miller fan, because this book moved me like few books have ever moved me before or since. Miller's vision of what he encounters in Greece will captivate you---the reader. I am writing this review because when I encounter people who are well-read, most have never heard of this wonderful gem of a novel. I really dislike the word "travel-novel" that is attached to this book, because it is more than that. It is an introspective book that captures Henry Miller at his best. I am pleased that I did not read Henry Miller's other book's before I read this novel: I may not have appreciated Miller's writing as much as I do today. Having read many of Henry Miller's books since first turning the pages of this greatly overlooked "Masterpiece," [Yes, to me the book is a masterpiece of writing] I highly recommend the book.

I find this book one of the better ones of Henry Miller that I have read: Especially considering it was written by an American on Greece. [American Savage: As Miller refers to himself]. It's kind of funny to think about this now, however, after I first read this book, I actually wanted to go to Greece and experience the same sort of journey that Henry Miller experienced. Even going so far as to retracing his footsteps in his journey. Well, I was much younger then. However, I do believe that you will enjoy this novel, as Miller does not write in any way, shape, or form like his Tropic novels. Miller's writing has a way of almost making you experience life in Greece. Therefore, I recommend the book highly, for you will not be disappointed. [Stars: 5+]

4 out of 5 stars He's different all right.......2006-07-12

I found this book lying in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia and began reading it. I've read a bit of Henry Miller before.

His perspective and documentation of the Greeks on the eve of WWII is one the most interesting aspects of the book. I also love how he meticulously documents what he eats, especially considering I was eating garbage while I read it.

His ex-patriotic overtones and anti-American sentiments rub me the wrong way, but at the same time it doesn't ruin the book.

What makes it four stars is his insistence on using obscure and unintelligible vocabulary, intentionally I suspect, in order to make the work seem more literary or "artistic".

Whatever man.

4 out of 5 stars Good variety of stories.......2007-02-27

I bought this book because I'd been hearing about Ellora's Cave and wanted to see what their books were like. I figured an anthology would give me a general idea of how steamy the books are and what kinds of stories they produce.

I have to say that I laughed at first when I started reading Body Chemistry by Tawny Taylor. I couldn't get into the heroine's head. She was always saying things like, "Oh, my god!", "Oh, boy", or "Oh, yes." Over time, the story did grow on me because the erotic material is fresh. I just had a hard time with Allie Larson's way of thinking and talking.

Thankfully, I was impressed with and enjoyed Ghost of a Chance by Shiloh Walker. It is a story where past lives and present lives mix. It has a brilliant mix of the paranormal with strong sexual tension.

Earthwork by Annie Windsor is definately sexy and erotic. There is certainly some steamy material here that will keep you warm on a cold night. I'm not used to reading male dominance/ S&M type stuff, so this was a change for me. I also usually don't read futuristic romances. But, I do love stories with strong psychic elements and this has all three. If you like alpha heroes with a strong dominant streak, you'll like Earthwork.

I was less interested in Mlyn Hurn's tale, Past Running, and it is probably the only story I never re-read. Maybe because it's about an abusive ex-husband bent on kidnapping and more, I just wasn't really excited by it. There was little in the way of steamy scenes and the villain was repugnant, so I read it through and didn't look back. If you like romantic suspense or thriller type books, you might enjoy this tale. I think Mlyn Hurn is probably good as a full-length novel writer, I just wasn't titillated by this as a short tale. I thought there needed to be more about Aeryn and Devlin and less on the ex-husband. This story reads like it is an excerpt from a longer novel rather than a solid, stand alone erotic piece.

I enjoyed Jaid Black's story, The Beckoned. She did a good job of creating a time travel romance in a very short format. I also loved the fact that the heroine was an Indian woman from New Zealand in love with a colonial American. The heroine's background added something special for me and made the story fresh and unique.

The first story of the book is Denise A. Agnew's Nightscream. A vampire and a headstrung aspiring agent get caught together alone in the special investigation's office while attempting to get rid of a very determined banshee. Things heat up between them as agent Conall Tierney seems just as bent on seducing Evelyn as he is on capturing the banshee. It's a good story and there is something sexy about Conall. It would have been nice if this one was a little longer.

Overall, this is a fun anthology. Certain stories stand out more than others, but it definately has a lot of variety!

4 out of 5 stars Black and Walker.......2005-04-26

Mainly bought this for the Jaid Black story. But was impressed by the Shiloh Walker story. This was my first story by her. Of course since it's a continuation of an established series, I didn't quite know what was going on. But that really didn't matter. It made me want to start on the series. Jaid Black and Lora Leigh are my all time favorites. But now, I have to add Shiloh to this list. Keep up the good work, Shiloh.

This is the first book I have read by this author. Actually, I didn't really finish reading it. The plot line was juvenile, characters stilted and stereotypical and I got tired of the story line, such as it was, constantly being interrupted by silly sex scenes, minute descriptions of - basically - non- clothing, the heroine wandering around the deep woods naked, etc. Her enhanced genetic make-up didn't seem to have any real value. Actually, if you really want to read a story about rough and tumble "gold rush" frontiers, try Jack London.

I was shocked at the negative reviews for this book. Strangly, I enjoyed this sci-fi romp. Some reviewers question where the science is: but this whole novel revolves around a rare, generally manually processed, crystal, that is used in Tao space for very very fast space travel. How much more sci-fi can you get? Some reviewers didn't quite like the Dexta bureacracy-yet I think it's a marvelous Machiavellian creation and a nifty counterpoint to an Emperor who holds a lot of power. While it's true there is some sex and details on the skimpy clothing, I don't feel that it is extraneous. It simply clarifies the cultural norms and expectations in the 33rd century. I'm not saying this is some deep 2001 satire on the state of being and the reason for creation-it's not; and CJ Ryan is clearly not trying to go there. But it's definitly a good romp and I recommend it.

Unless you are interested in a running commentary on the lead character's peek-a-boo clothes, this is not the book for a serious reader. If there is any science fiction in this book I failed to find it. I will be sure to NOT read any other books by C J Ryan. I can only assume the author is a frustrated stripper wantabe.

1 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment After the Kooky World of Dexta.......2006-07-06

If Dexta's nutty innovation made it a flawed but fun novel, sequel Glorious Treason's leaden predictability makes it simply unbearable. Science fiction newbie C.J. Ryan isn't going to compete in the overly crowded world of galactic empire stories with such thin gruel.

Glorious Treason pits feckless Emperor Charles and smooth Dexta chief Norman Mingus against one another over the backwater planet Sylvania. On Sylvania, but nowhere else in the galaxy, there exists a natural deposit of the normally synthetic mineral Fergusonite. Fergusonite runs the Empire by enabling interstellar travel, and Charles wants a big piece of the "quadrillion crowns" that Sylvania represents. Mingus disagrees, claiming the natural stuff is too impure. Based on this improbable contrivance, heroine Gloria VanDeen -- the Empire's rather oversexed sweetheart and Charles' ex-wife -- is dispatched to Sylvania. Her job is to carry out the Emperor's wishes and, on Mingus's orders, sabotage them at the same time.

What follows reads like something Western writer Louis Lamour might have written in high school. Gloria's machinations are so transparent that poor Norman Mingus should be getting worried about saving his neck. The reader may begin to worry about whether the book will ever end.

One thing to be aware of, if you are a Gloria VanDeen fan. Ryan, by design or otherwise, drags Gloria though the mud a bit. She makes obviously unwise decisions. It is learned that she has a genetic sex drive that to some extent controls her behavior. This has a tendency to make her seem more pathetic than anything else. And, unrelated to sex, Gloria's actions at the end of the book -- the groundwork having been laid well before the end -- are sadistic and sickening.

Pass on this book and upcoming Fifth Quadrant.

2 out of 5 stars Science Fiction or Science Fashion .......2006-07-03

This might have been an interesting book had the author concentrated more on the plot and less on the peripheral items. the heroine is pretty, intelligent and has an interesting career and background. The author, however, appears to place more emphasis on her fashion and sexual exploits than on developing her as a real character.

Is it really necessary to describe every skimpy outfit that the heroine wore and every sexual encounter that she has in order to further the plot? It appears that the author feels compelled to throw some of this in every few pages in a poorly disguised attempt to hold the reader's interest.

I was also disappointed by the actual plot itself. Some of the items were so transparent that the reader could predict them pages before the heroine came to the obvious conclusion. Could anybody not see the significance of the ski lodge?

Other items were never adequately explained and left the reader guessing why the obvious was omitted. If she knew that the lodge was bugged why didn't she ask Abel if he could provide some evidence?

Hopefully, in future novels, the author will leave out most of the fashion and the sex and build her character into one with the depth to be more interesting.

                        Book Description

Every woman longs to be appreciated, respected, and adored, but when her needs aren’t met within her marriage, she could be tempted to walk away. As little hurts and disappointments accumulate and her heart hardens, a woman’s loneliness and vulnerability take over, and she might find emotional fulfillment elsewhere, perhaps in even a casual encounter with another man. When the marriage enters this realm of real danger, the woman believes it will be less painful to walk away than try to work on it. With heart and wisdom, Dr. Steve Stephens and Alice Gray offer practical advice for how to stop this epidemic of walk-out women. They outline the warning signs of severe marital discontent and share how to reconnect with your spouse, communicate your hurt, and open your heart. If both partners are willing to work at it, any marriage can be saved.

Are You Even Thinking About Walking Out?

“I’m at the point where I don’t think it is worth the effort anymore.”

“The only reason I’m staying is because of the children.”

“Surely God doesn’t want me to be this unhappy.”

Every woman longs to be appreciated, valued, and cared for. When these needs go unmet, she may be tempted to leave the husband she once loved—but walking out is seldom the path to happiness.

Like trusted friends, Dr. Steve Stephens and Alice Gray offer wise and gentle advice to restore hope to your marriage. You’ll discover proven methods for how you can move toward each other rather than away, build up instead of tear down, and find love rather than lose it.

                        Story Behind the Book

Although a growing number of women are walking away from their marriages, there are no books to help them realize that this is not the path to happiness. A woman’s discontentment settles like dust on furniture, and although she tries, she fails to make her husband understand. His responses seem too little and too late. Many women mistakenly believe it is easier emotionally to leave the marriage than try to restore it. We want a woman to realize that even when her heart seems closed to her husband, there is a way to open it and become one again. Loss of love does not equal loss of marriage. Loss of hope does not mean the relationship should be abandoned.

I am in my mid 50's and on my 3rd marriage. I want to be married - I just didn't know how to stay married. I have finally learned.

My husband enjoyed and appreciated the assignments. We learned more about each other - and our marriage grew much stronger.
I highly recommend this for married couples - and especially every woman who wants to 'WALK OUT'.

The book is easy to read - layed out in simple-down to earth chapters!! The book may cost $5.00 but the result is priceless.

I was thinking of walking out on my 25 plus years of marriage. This book helped me see all the good reasons to stay. It doesn't tell you not to leave, but helps you think through all the consequences of your choices.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Sensible, Compassionate, Realistic Christian Book on Marriage!.......2007-04-24

Although I am a Christian, I have not come across many outstanding Christian books on marriage. I tend to find their views unrealistic, sugarcoated, or stereotypical, and their advice either biased or impossible to follow. (Is everything really going to get better if you just decide to submit to your husband more?!) This book exceeded my expectations. First, it has a correct, realistic view on humanity - us Christians are not exempt from sinning or immune to temptations, we also face disappointments, and struggle in our married lives. Read the excellent chapter "The Fantasy of Something Better": it shows you how anyone can start having secret yearnings about that kind, gentle man in the next pew, but also how flawed and dangerous those fantasies can be, and how to redirect your thoughts and actions.

Second, the book is compassionate and helpful without enabling victim mentality. It keeps you accountable for what you and your husband have or have not done for your marriage, but without judgment and guilt-tripping. If this is not a true expression of God's grace, I don't know what is! Third, the advice offered in the book is both plentiful, realistic and applicable. I can't overemphasize the word "realistic". The authors don't promise a magical overnight solution to your problems but the insights and encouragement offered will help you see what is wrong with your marriage and how you can start working on it.

If you are feeling restless and disappointed in your marriage, I highly recommend this book. Even if you don't have any major problems, this book is worth reading and learning from.

Although this book was primarily written for women who are thinking of leaving their marriage, it is also a book that will help keep your marriage strong and vibrant whether you are newlyweds or a couple celebrating your fortieth anniversary. There are suggestions for activities and conversation at the end of each chapter. Read it alone or even better, read it as a couple. Both men and women have written commenting on how much the book has helped their marriage. Chapter 4, "What Happened to the Good Times," Chapter 10, "Different Walls," Chapter 14, "The Fantasy of Something Better," and Chapter 17, "Dreaming New Dreams" are especially important if your marriage is hurting.
Neil Clark Warren, founder of eharmony.com, has endorsed the book with this comment: For any man who wants to love his wife more deeply--and for any woman who is dying to be loved that way.
The book offers wise and gentle advice to restore hope to your marriage. You'll discover proven methods for how you can move toward each other rather than away, build up instead of tear down, and find love rather than lose it. God's blessings for you as your read it.
