Love it, love it, love it!!!.......2007-10-06
Love this book!!! great story, very original!!! It's a only a little long, but you get hooked by it! what are you waiting for, buy it!!!
Disappointment...........2007-09-20
City of Beasts is a book that rockets off to a great beginning, a mediocre middle, and a plunging, just awful ending. In my opinion, it are the books like City of Beasts that disappoint me the most. I mean, you have a fantastic opening. GREAT! Keep going before you lose both the suspense and the momentum! However, the plot just keeps slowing down and twisting. By the time you reach the end, BAM the book finishs with a crash, and you end up with wasted money and time. I bet if Isabel Allende had spent a couple more months revising the ending, City of the Beasts would have been an A+ novel. But sadly, it isn't....
Another Amazing Allende.......2007-07-21
This book is the first of three books and it was something I first read in 4th grade. It just was a very powerful book and gave me a different look on life and the rainforest. The Indians were being murdered and it was made me think how evil some people in the world are by cutting down the rainforest and how in history making the tribes see civilization. In history many have died from being exposed to sickness, but in this novel they are given what is basically a dose of death.
To people who want to go the Amazon River.......2007-05-30
I'm a High School Freshman. In my class I read this book in for my book club. This novel is very interesting because I like the story of adventure. Also, I very much enjoyed the secret and conflict in this story. You can see the main character named Alex is growing up in bad situation, and I can think about if I will go to the Amazon River. Furthermore, this book is so exciting when I read the person is attacked by an anaconda. I really hate things that kind of snake. Because the author described that as real, I was excited about that. However, I think this book is for pretty young student such as middle and primary. It is easy to think about each character. However, I like the last the turning over part that kind doctor changed to bad person. In addition, you can feel that about family. After I read this book, I had to think about that family is a sacrifice for themselves. The main character tries hard for his mom. It seems very nice. These things made me interested and excited. This book has very clearly events, so you can figure out the special and important events in the book very easily. It helps to you read this book very comfortable and easy. Therefore, the very young teenager can understand and figure out the important things about character, situation and lessons.
Painful, Painful, Painful........2007-05-30
When I first began "City of the Beasts" I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable and readable it was. . .until a quarter way through the book. That's when the book, which could have been an amazing, adventurous tour of the Amazon through the young eyes of Alexander Cold, morphs into some lame, supernatural "save the planet" hoopla. Don't get me wrong, I think it's imperative to remind people the importance of preserving the earth, but it would have been better delivered solely through Alexander's experiences rather than adding in all the mythical Beasts, and the ability to morph into animals, and "The People of the Mist" who can become invisible, etc. Seriously, after page 100 the book reads like one seriously bad peyote trip. Since there are allusions to hallucinogenic drugs in the book, I have to assume that this is what the reader is witnessing, the Amazon through a drug induced stupor.
"City of the Beasts" was a really disappointing read. And just because supernatural/mystical plotlines are hot right now in children's lit., it doesn't mean that every book fits nicely, nor should be forced into that genre. Allende really should have stuck with what she had, an awesome coming of age adventure through the Amazon.

Green Calder Grass.......2007-08-29
I just finished reading this book today and again I thoroughly enjoyed this book - you feel as through you a living the book with the Calders - you can picture the various scenes in your own mind and even have a picture in your own mind as to how each of the characters look - you feel their emotions and cry with their pain. I ordered this book from the US as I have not been able to find it in Australia. I have now started reading Calder Star.
NoMoreDailey.......2006-09-06
I've been looking for the appropriate place to place this review, because it's really more than a review of this book. It's a review of how Dailey has mishandled the beloved main characters of her previous books. I read the first Calder book, This Calder Sky and absolutely loved it. I fell in love with Maggie and Chase and was looking forward to a future story with Ty. The next two books, This Calder Range and Stands a Calder Man were both good, but not the caliber of This Calder Sky, in my opinion. THEN I read Calder Born, Calder Bred!!! I was outraged and heartsick that Dailey killed off Maggie. After all Maggie and Chase had been through, they finally get back together and then Dailey kills off the beloved heroine. I was so upset I did not buy another Dailey novel for about 15 years!! Several years ago I bought Calder Pride and again fell in love with Cat and Logan. I mentioned all this to my husband, so he bought me Green Calder Grass for a gift. That brings me back to the review of this book. Since I had finished Calder Pride and loved that book, I quickly scanned through Green Calder Grass, I did not want to go through another hero/heroine getting killed. I couldn't believe it...Dailey kills Ty!!! I did not even read the book...I packed it away, but I should have thrown it away!! ( I just have this thing about throwing away books!!) So that brings us to the present. I have been noticing all the new Calder books out, so I unpacked This Calder Sky and Calder Pride and reread them. After rereading them I started getting the old Calder itch again, especially to read about Cat and Login's prodigy. I started reading some of the reviews first, since I've been burned twice now. In the reviews I find out Logan's dead in one of the next two books!!! That's it for me!! NO MORE DAILEY!!! Why is it necessary to kill off beloved characters?? I will not waste my time or money on anything else that has Janet Dailey's name on it!! Is there a rating below 1 star??
I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I GOT WEARY OF READING .......2006-03-13
This was not one of the best books I have read. Janet could have left Tara out completely in this story. She dominated the storyline and left Jessy and the twins out. Ty never seemed to spend time with his children. I just go plain out done with the story and skipped from about from 351 to 380. There was Jessy waiting on Tara and out riding the range in the roundup while Tara was spending time with Ty.
I am very disappointed in the writer.
Sad and Depressing.......2005-07-09
This was my first Janet Dailey book and I was so disappointed! There was no real romance between Ty and his wife Jess, Tara was just pathetic, and the ending was horrible. I wouldn't tell a friend to read it, I couldn't even bring myself to read it again if I tried.
Western romance with practiced skill.......2005-06-15
Trodding the familiar terrain of the western romance with practiced skill, veteran novelist Dailey returns again to the Calder clan and its Triple C Montana ranch. Ty Calder has recovered from the kidnap/shooting that ended Calder Pride, and he and Jessy are joyfully expecting twins.

Mindless Entertainment.......2007-01-10
This is not particularly great space opera but it was an enjoyable way to waste a day sitting home sick.
The story is of a young officer who has been exiled to a distant post because of his brashness. He gets the job done in spite of incompetent leadership higher up. He is assigned to command two BOLOs which are well past their prime. He has trouble from day one because his new bosses do not appreciate his past talent for making them look bad and neither do they trust the sentient armored vehicles (BOLOs) assigned to them. He has to try and cope with laziness and a maintenance unit that sees no point in working hard when nothing much happens in that dist reach at the edge of the galaxy. Also troubling is the fact that the two BOLOs seem to be quite a bit more self-aware than should be expected for their model numbers.
Meanwhile, a new set of aliens has decided to invade. These are vaguely like carnivorous dinosaurs and have the same sort of table manners. Their biochemistry means that they cannot eat humans but that does not take the fun out of hunting them. Their civilization depends upon conquering others and looting refined metals. Their fleet is huge and they are without mercy.
It is all up to our young hero to stop them. He has two aging tanks at his disposal and will have to fight his own command authority as well as the aliens.
Other BOLO books have been better but this one did provide a few hours of enjoyment. It is worth reading and will even be remembered for a while.
good book written in the tradition of the Bolos!.......2007-01-09
This book was a very enjoyable read. Bolo fans will notice that instead of being several short stories about different Bolo marks, this is actually a novel about two "obsolete" Mark XXIV Bolos who were thought to be past their prime. While I'm normally very fond of the short story approach, this novel was well written and held my attention through the entire story. A "must read" for any Bolo fan!
One of the best Bolo books!.......2003-11-10
Bolo brigade is a well crafted, actioned packed story in the universe of Keith Laumer's Bolos, giant sentient tanks that are humanity's most stalwart defenders.
In Bolo Brigade, a bolo officer with a dead end career winds up posted to a backwater planet that is about to become a raging battleground. The Malach, a race of reptile-like aliens appears from the depths of space and invades the planet. The only force that can stop them are two old bolos and whatever forces the planetary government can muster.
Bolo Brigade thunders to a crescendo of action that is glittering in in its intensity and at one point seems to literally roar with the fury of battle. The bolos display courage and humanity that goes far beyond the call of duty, and the ending may even leave you with tears in your eyes.
Sometimes authors just nail it right on the head and William Keith excels with Bolo Brigade.
Pleasing!.......1999-04-20
This is one of those books you can read again and agian. Entertaining to the last. Believable characters and an extrodinary setting. I really wish (hint HINT) that a followup would come along one day.
Fighting against the odds and political inertia.......1999-01-22
William H Keith, JR's book, "Bolo Brigade" (ISBN 0-671-87781-X), is his second contribution to Keith Laumer's Bolo story line. On the edge of the galactic arm and human occupied space, known as the Concordiat, lays the Strathan Cluster Confederation. The Confederation consists of thirty-six human inhabited worlds that gained their freedom from the direct control of the Concordiat, but still maintain an alliance with that larger human political body. Part of the alliance between the two governments is the deployment of sixteen very old, but still powerful ground based war machines, fourteen Mark XVIII and two Mark XXIV Bolos. The Mark XVIII Bolo , was almost the last design to be equipped with only the most advanced super computers of their day, while the two Mark XXIX Bolos, named Freddy and Ferdy, were fourth generation designs using a self-direct and self-aware computer. Lieutenant Donal Ragnor, a Bolo Tactical Officer of the Concordiat, has been transferred to the Confederation as liaison officer as punishment for bucking the Concordiat military chain of command. Soon after Donal's arrival on Muir, the capital world of the Confederation, he discovers the Mark XVIII Bolos have been deployed to fourteen different worlds and that he will be the commanding officer for both Mark XXIV Bolos stationed at the capital. Further, prior to Donal's arrival two member worlds have fallen silent and several starships have disappeared from the space lanes within the Cluster. The Cluster's central government assumes that the loss of communications is due to equipment malfunctions and that the some of the lost ships have been captured by pirates, while others are being reported means of committing insurance fraud. However, the government does not send out investigation teams to verify their theories. After Donal's arrival, Muir receives a garbled message from the world of Wide Sky, near to the edge of the cluster, about an invasion, before communications abruptly cease. Lieutenant Ragnor, Freddy, Ferdy, and Alexie Turner, Wide Sky's Deputy Director General, have to fight off the invasion of an unknown intelligent species on Muir. William H. Keith, JR brings the reader another well-balanced story in Keith Laumer's Bolo saga. This book is another gem for the reader who likes the writings of William H. Keith, JR and Keith Laumer.

My Introduction to Bolos.......2005-05-18
Picked up this old collection by chance in a public library. I believe that this is the first collection of Bolo stories.
The first story - "The Night Of The Trolls" - is a little slow.
Then comes a Retief story with "Courier." Not much Bolo action in this one but Retief is hilarious.
The third story, "Field Test" hooked me on Bolos. If the end of this story hits you in the gut - you are a Bolo fan. If not, find something else to read.
The rest of the stories are strong and will leave you looking for more Bolo adventures.
I read this on a friends recommendation..........2002-07-12
I enjoyed the different short stories that represented different times in the future. On one of the short stories I was really wanting that to be an entire novel instead of just a short story (Retrief was awesome!).
Similar to my review on Theives' World the stories are great but there are very thin threads tying it all together and no real following of a select group of characters.
A good read and I hear that the rest of the books in the series are the same and just as enjoyable as the first.
Bolo & Artificial Intelligence.......2000-06-13
A collection of stories that represent the future of AI as implemented by massive war machines that are used to conduct war on a planetary scale...

Book Description
In this breathtaking, luminous account of the work of famous Brazilian healer Joao de Deus (John of God), author Josie RavenWing describes a world in which miraculous healing is a common occurrence and where love is the predominant energy.
Customer Reviews:
book of miracles review.......2007-04-11
I enjoyed this book. It gave a very informative picture of what goes on down in Brazil with John of God. I would recomend anybody thinking of going down there should read this book first. An expedition to John of God is not for the lazy or half-hearted spiritual seeker. You are required to excercise self discipline and stick to a restricted diet for 40 days. Often you are invited to sit and meditate for hours at a time. It is not a vacation, but if you are serious about change it would probably be a life changing experience. The book contains many stories about amazing healings that are really inspiring.
Informative & Comprehensive.......2005-08-16
This book is very helpful in introducing the reader to John of God and the Casa and detailing his years of healing. The book is written by a healer who understands the energy and the spirit behind the Casa. Each chapter shares stories of healing from different viewpoints, the writer, the staff, the hopefuls who travel for days by bus to be touched by John of God.
If you believe in spiritual healing this book is right for you.
If you have an inquiring mind, but are unsure, I would recommend you read "Spiritual Alliances" first.
This is an incredible book; but..... ;-).......2002-08-02
This is an incredible book; but some westerners will have a hard time wrapping their minds around part of the information conveyed in this book.
This book relates the story of Joao de Deus (John of God) The Miracle man of Casa de Dom Ignacio (The House of St. Ignatius) located in Brazil.
People visit this healing center from all over the world for healing,
Joao does surgeries without the use of sterile surgical instruments, and not once has an infection or disease been transmitted from one person to another.
Here is the information that people will be unable to wrap their minds around. Joao does these surgeries without anesthesia, and the patients feel no pain during the surgeries with almost no bleeding.
The Casa de Dom Ignacio is also famous for what is called "invisible surgeries" In some of the healing rooms called "current rooms" they sit in chairs or lie down on cots, and place their hands over the area they need an invisible surgery, and many people report finding an incision there later.
I am not going to dismiss any of it because the author seems sincere, and I have seen other things (namely Qigong masters, and some of my healing sessions) that would be every bit as hard for people to wrap their minds around.
For the disbeliever; no amount of proof is adequate. For the experiencer; no amount of proof is necessary.
