Book Description
In Cadillac Jack, Larry McMurtry -- Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lonesome Dove -- proves his unique talent for conjuring up the real, often eccentric people who inhabit the American heartland and for capturing the peculiarly American search for new frontiers and adventure.
Cadillac Jack is a rodeo-cowboy-turned-antique-scout whose nomadic, womanizing life -- centered on his classic pearl-colored Cadillac -- rambles between the Texas flatlands of flea markets and small-time auctions and Washington, D.C.'s political-social life of parties, hustlers, vixens, and spies. Along the way he meets a cast of indelibly etched characters: among them, the strikingly beautiful, social-climbing Cindy Sanders; Boog Miller, the tackily-dressing millionaire good ole boy who patronizes Jack's business and who has more political muscle than a litter of lobbyists; Khaki Descartes, the pushy, brain-picking, Washington woman reporter; Freddy Fu, an undercover CIA agent working out of a greasy barbecue joint called The Cover-Up; and Jean Arber, the mother of two and a fledgling antique-store owner who can't quite figure out if she'll marry Jack or not.
Wild, touching, and hilariously funny, Cadillac Jack is Larry McMurtry's raucous social satire of sex, politics, and love in the fast lane, peopled with Americans only he could render.
Customer Reviews:
Life was meant to be lived;and CJ sure knew how...........2003-11-10
This was the first McMurtry novel that I read.I like earthy stories;and boy was this a dandy. If you enjoy novels like Cannery Row,Tobacco Road or anything by Kinky Friedman you should like Cadallic Jack.I enjoyed it so much,I started reading the rest of McMurtrys novels. So far, I found it the most humurous, entertaining and lighthearted of the ones I've read.He has written the episodes so well you feel you are travelling right along with him and loving every moment of it.
I assume a lot of these stories are fictional ,in whole or in part, but are probably based on some of the authors experiences.
What I have come to like about McMurtry's books is that they are all so different from one another;and I think this one is the most different.
If there is any truth about this character, there should a law against it;nobody should be allowed to have that much fun--not one person.
Sharp writing, wonderful insights, a period piece..........2003-08-02
A wonderful character study, a period piece first published back in 1982, filled with wit and satire and mighty fine writing. Best book/antique scout book I've read since John Dunning's BOOKED TO DIE. It also reminds me of Paul Theroux's more recent HOTEL HONOLULU in tone, and as in that funny novel, some of the chapters here could stand alone as short stories.
I picture Cadillac Jack as looking like Kinky Friedman or Richard Boone, narrating the story in a Texas accent, boots propped up on the liar's bench, eyes arcing under the cowboy hat in a bet-you-can't-top-this-one slant.
What a pleasant surprise! An amazing character. An amazing yarn.
When offered a coffeecup do not expect to find a beer inside.......2000-05-11
These are the words of our classic Anton Chekhov. Does McMartry advertise Cadillac Jack as another Terms of Endearment? Why it's wrong to be entertained and ask yourself - So what?- when the book is finished? The book is funny, unpretentious and concise. I made myself finish Moving On, dropped all these prequels & sequels to Lonesome Dove and Terms of Endearment halfway through, gasping at McMurtry's productivity, enjoyed his Pulitzer Prize winner and the book the Oscar winner is based on. But it's the books like Cadillac Jack and Anything For Billy that gave me a few precious hours of enjoyment and relaxation. They are well above the mass market fare but they do not plan to enter the Booker's shortlist, perfectly satisfied with being what they are.
Slight But Entertaining.......2000-03-09
McMurtry scholars have dubbed this part of the author's "Trash Trilogy," and if you're expecting Lonesome Dove or Terms of Endearment you may agree. This is McMurtry's sidelong, amused and also slightly amazed look at the foibles of Washington, D.C. There's not a lot going on here, but McMurtry spins a good yarn nonetheless. You won't be uplifted or probably even very impressed, but you will be entertained.
Well written and funny, but the plot lacked juice........1999-11-01
I couldn't put this book down...until the last couple of chapters when I felt cheated out of a real end or conclusion or...anything. I needed closure. I laughed out loud at McMurtry's descriptions and characterization. I could see each object the main character sought to own, whether it be a salt shaker or a woman, but I just couldn't see the end of the tale and was bitterly let down.

Book Description
On the heels of her delightfully charming debut comes Sharon Owens's new novel of romance and regret--and the winding paths to love.
Johnny Hogan, raised on Hollywood movies, has opened the ballroom on Magnolia Street to bring that glorious fantasy to life--for himself, for devoted romantics, and for everyone in town who still believes in impossible dreams.
Customer Reviews:
The Ballroom on Magnolia Street was great.......2006-06-27
I loved this book. I had read her first book the Tea house on Mulberry Street and I knew that I had to have the next one. It will keep you interested and wanting another at the end.
I highly recommend it, and the lastest novel the Tavern on Maple Street
So glad I found this author.......2006-04-17
I was pleasantly suprised to find this new Irish author. I have always been a fan of Maeve Binchy's and after reading Sharon Owens I can see why so many reviews draw parallels between the two authors.
The book is centered around a ballroom in Belfast. We are introduced to the owner, Johhny "Hollywood" Hogan, and eventually to his patrons. We meet two sisters, Shirley and Kate and follow their love, work and family dilemmas. As happens in life, people are connected in unexpected ways, which makes for some interesting relationships.
The story is told with great affection for the characters, despite their faults. The book does not falter and keeps the reader both interested and amused to the very end. Ms. Owens excels at drawing three dimensional characters and writing believable conversations and story lines.
A delightful book all around!
Looking for Binchy, be prepared for disappointment..........2006-03-20
Always on the lookout for new Irish fiction writers, I stumbled across Sharon Owens. When I find one I like I tend to get every book ever written and gobble them up like candy, eagerly anticipating the next release. Unfortunately, that won't be the case here. The story line was impossibly weak from the start. I almost gave up after the third chapter but hung on as I hate to admit defeat which is more than I can say for this author. I thought this book was a mystery then chick lit then I realized that even the author can't seem to figure out what genre she is going for. She starts out killing the hero's parents in the war, next having him lose the heroine who she can never quite make up her mind til the end whether she's a brainless idiot, still in love with him and going back or what. The hero is good then bad, up then down. It's not a matter of keeping the reader in suspense, I don't think the author has the first idea about plot development and it clearly shows. A reader doesn't mind character development but character confusion is another matter altogether, especially when the entire cast seems to suffer from it. If you are used to a quality writer like Rosamunde Pilcher or Maeve Binchy this is a huge step down. I'm not suggesting that this author be on a level with John Banville's The Sea - clearly we aren't talking Booker Prize material here but honestly - this was an effort to keep reading.
A real treat, could not put it down. .......2006-02-28
Fortunately, I had The Ballroom on Magnolia Street ready to pick up once I finished The Tea House on Mulberry Street. I was eager to once again to share the lives of ordinary Belfast citizens....hardworking, and ordinary. Johnny Hogan, the owner of the ballroom is anything but ordinary, Wht, he was the first man in Belfast, perhaps in all Ireland, to wear blue suade shoes and still wears them proudly. He is sure that a man as extraordinary as he will only find his true destiny in America. But he has the ballroom, and the rememberance of his love affair with Marian. Marian has her hands full with a family to raise and a thriving dress business, It keeps her almost too busy to worry about anyone discovering her long buried secret. Sisters Kate and Shirley are hard working girls who look forward to a bit of fun at Hogan's on the weekend. Kate is the one who picks and catches the man she fancies. Shirley is on the sideline...usually shoring up Kate as needed and yearning for "true love". Johnny's grandparents just want him to be happy, and hope his life will become settled enough so they can enjoy their remaining years....well earned since they raised him since his parents were killed in a WWll bombing. These characters and more go about their daily lives in Belfast looking ahead to going to Hogan's where they'll dance to the oldies and shed their work week lives and perhaps find a bit of romance. Once again, I was captivated by these people, sometimes exasperated and dismayed, and then laughing until my sides hurt. The pitted duel of insulting song requests waged by Kate and her rival at the ballroom had me chuckling at my desk at work. I could just see the two glaring across the ballroom, and the hapless DJ caught in the middle. My only complaint was there was not a single reference to any of the characters from her previous book, The Tea Room on Mulberry Street, I didn't think the characters would necessarily need to continue, but would have loved a mention here or there. Once again, I found this book to be a delightful read...and will eagerly await Ms. Owen's next.
Another Winner by Sharon Owens! "Ballroom" is Terrific!.......2006-02-25
The Tea House on Mulberry Street was so very enjoyable that I purchased the h/cover of Ballroom with my limited book buying $ for my library's shelf.
"Ballroom.." is warm, funny, insightful, touching, full of lovable & eccentric characters of *all ages*. Families, love, sisters, dancing, family secrets, a hilarious bumbling crook...Sharon Owens had me laughing out loud at times.
I just purchased Ms. Owens third book, The Tavern on Maple Street. Her books are worth every cent of my modest book buying $$. Please write more, Ms. Owens!

It isn't really a hardback........2007-09-23
I have the entire Honor Harrington series, and have added the hardback editions that were originally only published in paperback. (On Basilisk Station, the Honor of the Queen,The Short Victorious War, Field of Dishonor, and Flag in Exile.) When I saw More Than Honor listed as hardback, I assumed it was a real hardback special edition as were the others I have listed. However, this is merely a paperback that has been hardbacked. In order to do this, the pages themselves must be trimmed, and the hard cover is glued onto the book's endpages. If I'd wanted to hardback my paperbacks, I could have gotten it done for a bit less, as there are companies that offer this service. Since what I received should, in my opinion, have been advertised as a rebound paperback with hard covers, I was a tad miffed. Unless you really want a hard bound paperback copy of the book, which is itself well worth the reading, don't bother with this edition. You can purchase a realio truelio paperback, for far less, and get the same stories.
Exceptional!.......2006-07-07
Another exception book by David Weber in the Honor Harrington series. I love the female heroine, which is not common in the sci-fi genre of this type, and she is totally believable, totally relatable, and simply amazing! I have read each and every book of this series and except for one, I found them all to be equally compelling. Now, I want one of those cats! (read the book to find out what I mean!)
Background info on the Honorverse........2005-12-10
More Than Honor is a collection of short stories set in David Weber's Honorverse, or the universe of Weber's Honor Harrington series. This book contains three short stories and one essay, none of which are about Harrington herself, but provide lots of background information enhancing the reader's understanding of the Honerverse. The first story, Weber's A Beautiful Friendship, recounts the first contact between humans and treecats, and how the relationshihp between the two species developed. We learn much from this story about the 'cats and their culture. David Drake checks in with the next story, A Grand Tour, about Hakyon Nessler, who encounters some disreputable naval officers committing an act of piracy, and how he takes matters into his own hands in dealing with them. S.M. Stirling delivers the third story, A Whiff of Grapeshot, set on Haven. This story is about Esther McQueen, the head of the military, and the suppression of the Leveller Revolt. The essay, The Universe of Honor Harrington, is written by Weber himself. Weber gives us a condensed history of the Honorverse, with some added insight into the technology and science of the the Honor Harrington universe, as well as the history and the political landscapes of the star nations within that universe. If you're looking for an Honor Harrington story, you'll want to skip this book, but if you would like to deepen your understanding of the Honorverse, then More Than Honor is an oustanding read.
The Background Builds.......2005-06-11
This is the second collection of shorts built around the "Honorverse" of David Weber. In this one, Honor Harrington does not appear at all but that doesn't stop it from being a good read. It consists of 3 short fiction stories and 1 "background" essay.
"A Beautiful Friendship" is by Weber. It details the story of Stephanie Harrington, Honor's ancestor, and her place as the first human to be adopted by a treecat. It is a good adventure story of an intelligent but headstrong young girl on a frontier planet. The genes that will eventually be passed on to Honor are present and visible.
"A Grand Tour" is the work of David Drake. It tells the story of an aristocratic scholar form Manticore who learns of an act of piracy by a Havenite ship. Since he has a reserve naval commission, he takes matters into his own hands using, of all things, a light cruiser won in a poker came. It comes across much more believably than it sounds.
"A Whiff of Grapeshot" is from S. M. Stirling. It takes place entirely on Haven and tells the story of the suppression of the Leveler revolt alluded to in some of the Honor Harrington stories.
"The Universe of Honor Harrington" is the background essay from Weber. In it, he details humanities march to the stars, describes the technology that makes it possible and looks at the political systems of Manticore and some of the other polities encountered in his series. It is well worth the read for fans.
This is an excellent little volume.
It was ok but, ............2002-10-28
It was overall an ok book but, I wasn't exactly engrossed by it like earlier Harrington novels.

An inspirational and warmly positive source of sympathy.......2004-02-03
...To Love, Honor, And Vacuum by Sheila Wray Gegorie is an emotional and spiritual "self-help" instructional to balancing the challenges of marriage, housekeeping, and financial difficulties while maintaining respect for oneself and mutual respect in one's lifelong partnership. Written from a specifically Christian perspective for women who feel "more like a maid than a wife and mother," ...To Love, Honor, And Vacuum is an inspirational and warmly positive source of sympathy and practical advice.
One of the Best Books I've Read in a Long Time.......2004-01-25
I admit I rarely read books that are targeted at married mothers. I'm not married and I'm not a mother. Go figure. But since I moved in with my parents and two younger brothers a few months ago (got laid off, minimizing expenses while looking for a job, you know the drill), my healthy, if distant, appreciation for home engineers has developed into downright deification. As an adult member of the household, I'm frequently overwhelmed by how much needs to be done on a daily basis.
Perhaps that's why TO LOVE, HONOR, AND VACUUM strikes me as one of the best books I've read in a long time. Written by home schooling mom and entrepreneur Shelia Wray Gregoire, the book is chock full of practical tips for doing everything around the home from cleaning to keeping spending in check to stoking the romantic fires. A lot of her suggestions aren't necessarily rocket science, but she presents them in a fresh way and gives the business of running a family a new spin.
One feature of the book that I found especially insightful is a section profiling one day in the life of three women living at three different points in American history. These short fictional accounts reveal that while women over the years share many of the same concerns about the welfare of their families, the tangible nuts and bolts of running a household have evolved significantly. This will be an epiphany for the many modern women harboring guilt-inducing notions that the housewives of earlier generations were better at running their households despite the absence of the time and effort saving conveniences that clutter homes today. On the contrary, Gregoire convincingly points out that these technological advances have actually added more lines on today's to-do lists.
And while all of this is helpful, the real value of Gregorie's book is in its discussion of the principles that should guide the division of labor in the home.
As the back cover says, this is no "women's lib" book and Gregorie does not fail to mention biblical verses referring to wives submitting to husbands. Nevertheless, she does a masterful job of exposing how commonly held ideas about gender roles within the home are of a cultural construction and not a biblical construction. Furthermore, she points out that these traditional gender roles aren't effective for many families existing in our modern economy. With this in mind, she suggests innovative ways to devise a truly harmonious living and working environment.
This harmonious environment is ultimately the goal of everything that TO LOVE, HONOR, AND VACUUM proposes.
"As you change your emphasis to people's comfort, rather than keeping up appearances, your attitude toward housework will probably change as well. Having the 'perfect house' as a standard can be very debilitating, constricting our ability to share with others. Maybe you'd like to invite that new couple over after church, but you can't possibly let them in your home right now because there are still crumbs on the counter from breakfast and the kid's toys are lying on the stairs.
When we think this way, we are putting things ahead of people. Creating a family friendly home means creating a home where people feel comfortable. Pastor Kevin Dowling, a friend from our hometown says that Christians should aim to be hospitable, not to entertain. Our aim is to share our homes and our lives, not to put on a show. So instead of putting your energy into keeping a perfect home that few see, try creating a comfortable one the people feel welcome in."
And, as a result, TO LOVE, HONOR, AND VACUUM offers encouragement for the overwhelmed, freedom from perfectionism, and a vision of life dominated by care, not precision.

Creative ideas for today's overworked Moms.......2003-11-20
Stay-at-home and working moms often feel stressed about house chores, their spouse and their children. If you're a stressed-out mom and are feeling disconnected from your role of wife and mother, it's time to rearrange your priorities and focus on what's most important in your life.
"...To Love, Honor, and Vacuum," by Sheila Wray Gregoire, is just the book to help stressed-out moms learn how to improve their lives. It gives many examples, helpful tips and ideas, includes things to think about, and provides checklists to help manage your stressful life.
MyParenTime.com recommends this book -- although the book contains Christian-based ideas, this book is appropriate for Moms of all faiths. "When you feel more like a maid than a wife and mother," the suggestions in this book can help you change that :).
Purposeful Home Management.......2003-09-22
In "...to love, honor, and vacuum," Sheila Wray Gregoire shares with women a direct, no-nonsense approach to managing their homes. The strength of the book lies where Gregoire places the responsibility - with women's sinful thought patterns. After documenting historical precedent and identifying modern myths, Gregoire challenges women to examine past choices, identify root fears, choose God's truth and implement pragmatic changes. In so doing, she provides women with a Biblical methodology to exchange worldly inefficiency for purposeful living.

Customer Reviews:
Music from the stars.......2007-08-10
From the moment I began listening to this music I felt my body relax allowing the sounds to penetrate the depth of my soul. For many days I listened to the entire tape each morning after my Qi Gong and meditation. The music seemed to get me through the day on a much calmer basis. Besides that, I listen to the 9th song every night before I go to sleep because that particular song has brought me to a state long desired; a state of ectstasy and bliss. After spending so many years on my healing I recognized the fact that this music was what penetrated the depths to give me some acceleration of all the good I aspire to. I cannot speak highly enough of it. I do not find a word to accurately describe its beauty, gentleness and peace.
