Book Description

In the heart of a civil war-torn African nation, primate researcher Hope Clearwater made a shocking discovery about apes and man . . .

Young, alone, and far from her family in Britain, Hope Clearwater contemplates the extraordinary events that left her washed up like driftwood on Brazzaville Beach. It is here, on the distant, lonely outskirts of Africa, where she must come to terms with the perplexing and troubling circumstances of her recent past. For Hope is a survivor of the devastating cruelities of apes and humans alike. And to move forward, she must first grasp some hard and elusive truths: about marriage and madness, about the greed and savagery of charlatan science . . . and about what compels seemingly benign creatures to kill for pleasure alone.

5 out of 5 stars Only a few DNA strands short of a perfect match.......2007-02-25

Man vs chimpanzee: Boyd takes the wonderfully named Hope Clearwater's experience as a chimp-sanctuary research scientist in Africa and interleaves it with her crumbling marriage to a failed mathematical genius/lunatic, John.

Hope suffers from an unerring scientific passion to tell the truth about her empirical observations, a quality not always shared by her colleagues or bosses, whose agendas and motives grow darker as the book progresses.

Boyd jumps seamlessly across time and place to make this an easy one-day read and a very rewarding one. Brazzaville Beach blends a depth of detail, well-juxtaposed mathematical theories and the realisation that chimps can be just as brutal as human beings.

This is an intelligent, quality novel from an intelligent, world-class novelist.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Novel.......2007-02-06

If someone had given me a basic description of what this novel was about, I probably would not have read it. I don't really have any interest in reading about the life of a scientist studying primates in Africa. But William Gibson is a masterful storyteller and I became enthralled with this book. It's truly moving and exciting and yes, even thrilling and hilarious sometimes. I read this book shortly after it was published and it's with me all these years later. They don't come much better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-11-24

I just read Boyd's latest, "Restless," and went back to re-read Brazzaville Beach which I first discovered 15 years ago. (Whoever recommended that, thanks!) Brazzaville still retains an intriguing set of themes, and somehow sets the scene to the troubles that west and central Africa have suffered in the past decade and today.
I won't go over the plot, but would suggest that Boyd's use of language is something that other reviewers have not stressed. It is very economical, and very rich; sometimes you have to read a sentence over to find the nuances of comedy, despair, cynicisms, and then go back to the purely narrative description that pulls his stories along.
Kudos to Boyd, and Brazzaville remains my favorite of the many novels of his that I've read. Will Hollywood wake up and make a film of this?

4 out of 5 stars Out of Africa.......2006-05-28

Since many readers have reviewed this book before me, I will not summarize its plot, or plots. I found both interconnected stories quite interesting. The account of the central character's life among the chimpanzees and in an African civil war was clearly based on first-hand experience as other readers have noted, and the tale of her troubled marriage to a mathematician in the John Nash mould (A BEAUTIFUL MIND) had personal resonance for me as the son and father of mathematicians. Although I found the methods by which these two stories are interlinked to be cumbersome or even pretentious at times, there is an extensive tissue of ideas knitting the book together into a whole. Among these are the values and limitations inherent in the pursuit of knowledge, and the dynamics of comradeship and friendship in closed societies. But the stories are connected most of all in the character of Hope Clearwater, who emerges as a strong but fallible woman, and entirely human.

The book also makes an interesting comparison with Russell Banks' more recent THE DARLING, whose female central character also works with chimps in a country torn by civil war. In that book, too, sections set in Africa are set off against a portrayal of the heroine on her own ground. I happen to prefer the Banks, but this may only be because I read it first.

Is there are trend to construct contemporary novels out of separate stories which are only loosely connected? Within a six-week period, I have also read David Mitchell's CLOUD ATLAS (billed as a novel) and Joan Silber's IDEAS OF HEAVEN (billed as a "ring of stories," but with at least as much interconnectedness as the Mitchell). Also Anne Michaels' FUGITIVE PIECES, which introduces an entirely new life-story in the last quarter of the book in order to cast oblique light on the subject of the first three-quarters. The multiple story is also a favorite technique of W. G. Sebald (THE EMIGRANTS and VERTIGO), whose novels are closer to memoirs anyway. But you also see it in more popular works, such as Jennifer Haigh's MRS KIMBLE and the opening at least of Kate Atkinson's CASE HISTORIES. It is an interesting and potentially powerful trend -- provided only that the various tales ARE connected in significant ways. The test, I think, is whether any one of the stories would lose by being told on its own; in this particular case, I think it would lose something, but not much; hence my reluctant reduction of my vote from 5 stars to only 4.

5 out of 5 stars An English woman in Africa.......2005-06-14

South African fiction is generally political, but this book, from Nigeria perhaps, goes way beyond that. There is a civil war that impacts the story, but much of it concerns chimpanzees, who have names just like humans and are studied carefully by the main character, a British woman who has left her husband, a brilliant but troubled mathematician, to start a new life. As Hope Clearwater uncovers riveting new info about the chimps, that they are warlike and cannibalistic, like humans, she reminisces about her relationship with her husband, John and her new relationship with an Egyptian MIG flier who dreamed of being an astronaut. The events of her life combine with the philosophical and intellectual musings of her characters (mathematical theorums and more)to accentuate a story that is full of interesting characters and an authentic African setting from the 1960s.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not fascinating.......2004-07-15

This is the story of Hope Clearwater who studies chimpanzees in Africa while reminiscing on her failed marriage back in England. While I found the chimpazee study and the description of the scientific world around it interesting and informative, I did not find myself carried away by the narrative. Not a bad book, just not as good as I was hoping it would be.

This is a wonderful historical romance. Well written and moves right along with two very likeable characters.

Cameron Mackay kidnaps Meredith from a nunnery to punish her father (clan enemy).

The sparks fly when they realize they like each other.

5 out of 5 stars Revenge is Sweet.......2007-05-24

Now she is kidnapped by three very virile men who also happen to be her clan's enemies who have made it appear that she has died to make her father suffer. Cameron is stunned by his attraction to his enemy's daughter and devises a scheme to ease his longing and give him the revenge he so desperately wants, force Meredith to give him a son. She knows that her father could never have done the things they claim he did.

When the truth finally comes out about what happened to her, Cameron vows to keep her safe and make her understand he will never hurt her. Meredith is shunned by the inhabitants of the keep because of her clan, until they start seeing the gentle spirit inside. Soon Cameron and Meredith are married and she pregnant, but they still do not trust one another enough to declare love. The pair will never be happy as long as the feud stands between them but can Cameron let go of the hatred of the murderers of his family.

This was a sensual, wonderful Scottish Romance. It had everything that makes a story great, romance, suspence, action and good characters.

              4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable........2006-11-06

I found the heroine of this novel extremely easy to like. Ms. James managed to find that magical formula of just the right amount of innocence and intelligence that endears you to a character. The hero was brawny and courageous and just a little bit broody which always appeals. Despite the fact that the characters were well developed and the plot line interesting, I gave this book only four stars because for some reason two thirds of the way through I found myself putting the book down more often than I usually do. I'm glad I bought and read the book and it will stay on my keeper shelf.

              5 out of 5 stars What a man. He's a mighty good man!!!!!!!.......2005-08-28

His Wicked Ways has a strong (but not obnoxious) heroine who is in no way ordinary, a back story which is compelling but doesn't get in the way of the love story, and of course a wonderful hero. Both the hero and the heroine have secrets of their own, which are slowly brought to light by the author, like layers being peeled from a (very good) onion. Meredith and Cameron were both wounded, intriguing, complex, wonderful characters. The action/suspense was fast-paced and thrilling. The setting was beautiful and exotic. The sex was HOT and perfect for the story. His Wicked Ways is a cut way above the typical historical romance. Wonderful love story, great characters with an emotionally scarred hero and strong but vulnerable heroine, unique setting, intriguing plot, edge-of-your-seat pacing, heart-tugging emotion, excellent writing, intense sensual love scenes, and a superb ending. This was just the kind of romance novel I love. Wonderful characters. Characters that seems real because they are not perfect-something most novels like this lack.

This book had everything you need to create a good romance: a dashing hero, a beautiful heroine and, most of all...PASSION! Samantha James developed Meredith and Cameron's personalities and motivations very convincingly, to the point where you feel as though you know them well enough to be friends by the time you finish the book. His Wicked Ways was an emotional roller coaster, and I felt all the pain and joy they did. I was so engrossed, I read it in a day. The love scenes are ample & steamy, and the plot is a good one. A fast paced book with an intricate plot that I cannot help but enjoy. His Wicked Ways is a cut way above the typical historical romance.

It's true that this books name is not very fitting. The hero is not wicked. But it still is a wonderful book. A sweet passionate love story. I wish my husband was more like Cameron.

5 out of 5 stars Great love story.......2003-10-02

This was a very good book. The story line was about a girl who retreats to the convent to avoid her rapist and it was handled very well.Meredith and Camerons' love for each other builds slowly and deepens until you can almost feel it. This book was a pleasure to read and I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Ms. James is definately an excellant author.

This is a great book! I absolutely loved both stories! Jaide Fox writes some very effective romance! She has a way of touching your heart yet making the stories VERY EROTIC! I was in tears at the end of the second story...I loved all the characters and hated to see the story end! GREAT, GREAT, EROTIC, READ! Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Two Pleasurable Reads.......2006-05-06

Winter Thaw I read a long time ago when it was an e-book and I loved this author's style. The sexual tension builds in this historical romance as two stubborn people swallow their pride and admit their love for each other

His Wicked Ways really should've been titled Their Wicked Ways since it involves two men both of whom have been in love with the same woman for years. Two best friends become rivals as they compete for the heart of one woman, who literally ends up in the middle. Not that I would mind being the rope in this game of tug-o-war! The story is outrageous at times and the antics of Darcy and Bronte are the best. I was certainly chuckling. The good storyline will keep you reading just to see what Darcy and Nicholas will pull next and how the outraged Bronte will handle them. And those two gorgeous men are not above tempting her at the same time! Loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Not As Wicked As You'd Think!.......2005-10-09

Although this read does offer two very different stories, they aren't as wicked as many would think. That's not to say that they're bland or boring...far from it just be prepared.

"Winter Thaw" is the story of Winter, a woman that has her portrait done of her but she has no idea that the painter has already been commissioned to do a painting of her sans clothing. This is just not done. Imagine her surprise when she finds out the rogue that's done this is none other than Logan Cordell, the Earl of Remington. The fact that this man gets her blood going like no one else is going to drive her crazy. Or maybe just awaken her heart.

"His Wicked Way" is the story of Nicholas Cain and Darcy St. James these to rakes devise a contest to see who is the best lover. In order to make the contest fair they pick Bronte Dunmore as the lady they will seduce. This is the one woman that neither of them has ever been able to captivate. What will happen when Bronte finds these two handsome men pursuing her?

Both stories are entertaining but readers should be aware that although it's marketed as an "erotic" read it might be considered a tad bland. In other words this offers steam but not as much as fan's of this genre might be looking for. This is by no a reason to avoid the book as this is a different read and something for just about everyone.

Set far in the future, a space mechanic must come to terms with her past in order to realize a future that includes an alien bounty hunter. A mysterious alien culture, space Mafia, and a hidden military agenda add elements of space opera to this romance novel.

Have you ever read a menage a trois story with two girls and a man where the girls were not as intimate with each other as they are with the man? No, of course not. So why is it that when it's two men and a woman the men are not intimate with each other, other than the fact that they're in the same room having sex with the same woman. What's up with that? In this story the men do not get it on. So if you like your erotica as bland as cottage cheese, you'll like this story. Two gentlemen are offered the wager that they can seduce any woman in England. The woman chosen is a childhood friend whose husband has recently died and she blames the two gentlemen for not being there for her. They do indeed seduce her and all three live happily ever after. What a waste of my money?

I will not waste it on Winter Thaw.

4 out of 5 stars fine police procedural romance.......2005-05-07

NYPD Detective Vanessa Torres heads to her old neighborhood in the Bronx seeking to find millionaire realtor Alec Messina. His partners including his Mafia tied Uncle Sergio insists he embezzled from their firm McPherson real Estate. Vanessa tracks him to a gym where he gives lessons in self defense under the name Al Perez. Vanessa volunteers to fight Al with everyone feeling each hit that lands..

After the kids leave, Vanessa informs Messina that she is a cop and taking him in. He pleads with her that he is innocent and can prove it. When she explains that she read and understood the firm's finances, he asks for her help insisting he has evidence that the books were cooked to make him look like the felon. Though knowing she should refuse and follow police procedural, Vanessa agrees to help Messina with the caveat that if she finds him guilty he goes to prison. As they work together with the mob in pursuit they fall in love, but neither know if they will live long enough to prove his innocence.

Though readers will question Vanessa's disregard of official procedure that could cost her the job she cherishes to assist Alec on proving his innocence, fans will appreciate this fine police procedural romance due to the strength of the female protagonist. The story line is action-packed from the moment Vanessa challenges Al in the gym and never slows down until their respective hearts dares the other to vow their love. Fans will enjoy this solid tale as the cop and the realtor with mob connections try to confirm that Uncle Sergio cooked books.

"His idyllic place into the sea like a sandcastle with the tide coming in? Would the Rock hit far across the planet and break the world apart? There'll be so much left to do. So much to say. but what do you say at the end of the world?"There's a reason for the strange environment of the world the Remnants have landed on. It's not a real world at all. It's a ship and the ship's landscape is computer generated. Technically enhanced. And when the group finds a power node, a green-glowing cone that's cracing with electricity, they realize that they too can be in control of their bizarre surroundings.

5 out of 5 stars The last of us..........2002-03-16

500 years from home and the last of us, the Remnants have finally found out their true environment they landed on before Mother changed everything for them. This new environment might be even more dangerous than the last...a land full of pink blubbery blimps, riders, and slimy sucker that look like eels. It is an ocean environment with many surprises. The Remnants must bind together to defeat their environment. But right now the environment is winning and the Remnants aren't exactly working together. There are the so called mutants: 2Face, Edward, Billy Weir, and Tamara's baby, Then there is their leader Wylson( however even that isn't set. The presidents son Yago wants nothing more than to be in charge of things.) Emotions are all on high and this small group of humans, the last of our kind, are falling apart. There are inner battles...the one most dangerous between the mutant baby and Billy Weir. There is something about Billy that makes the baby on edge. Then there is the battle for power between Yago and Wylson. All and all the Remnats will have to work together to their best of ability to defeat the environment not meant for them.

The author, K.A. Applegate, has written the Animorphs series, but most people don't know that she has started a Remnants series as well. The story begins with Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face. They're kids that all live normal lives on earth in the year 2011. It is discovered that an asteroid seventeen miles long is on a collision course with Earth. Impact is only a few days away. Eighty people, including Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face, are strapped into an unprepared space shuttle with experimental hibernation berths. Mankind's only hope for the survival of their species is launched into space in hopes of landing on a suitable planet.

After five-hundred years, some people wake up, while others died in hibernation. The survivors, including Jobs, Mo Steel, and Two Face, are in a very strange land. Some people are deformed and act very strangely. These survivors struggle to survive in this world that looks like a very odd painting. They encounter Blue Meanies, Riders, and giant blimp-like creatures filled with laughing gas. Will the homosapien species survive?

I have read up through the fourth book, and am waiting for the fifth to be published. I love the odd things in these books that no average mind could come up with. There are some very weird happenings. Deformaties turn human against human even though, more importantly, alien creatures are out to kill them all. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a good fiction novel. These books keep you wondering what is going to happen next.

                        Book Description

On this fascinating CD program, the incomparable John Edward shows you how to use tools such as meditation and visualization to contact your guides. First, John explains the difference between angels and guides. An angel, he says, is an energy that has never had a physical incarnation, but who can assist, protect, nurture, and inspire the human condition. A guide may have had a physical body at one time, and works with you when you choose to incarnate into the physical. This energy stays with you throughout your life to help you in every way. Following this discussion, John teaches you how to successfully meditate so you can relax your body, open your mind to the intuitive side, and visualize what you want in life.

John Edwards is no fake. I have seen him in person and it was real. His books are excellent and I am not a devoted reader of hardly anything. I could not put his books down becuase they are so easy to relate too. If you ever get a chance to go to one of his reading ....you do not have to buy the most expensive seats becuase the reading were located in the cheapers seating at the show. In fact, it was all over but mostly in the least expensive ticket area. If your family is coming thru they do not care how much you paid to get in...they are going to come thru.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent meditation cd!.......2006-08-15

John Edward takes you on a beautiful journey to a tropical island where you will cleanse yourself and bask in the light of the universe. Imagine white light descending upon you and massaging your entire body removing all negativity. You will also, open and align your chakras, learn how to relax through breathing exercises and meditation, which will prepare you for meeting your guides and angels. You will listen to a guided meditation to meet your spirit guides, animal guide and those who have passed on. John, as we all know tends to talk very fast, well there is no exception here, only he talks a bit quieter and there is quiet hypnotic music in the background that helps one relax. I've heard a lot of tapes on this subject, and think very highly of this one. I even use it in my classes and have had great success with it.
The only down side would be the fast talk. When you buy a meditation tape, you are always expecting a slow, kind of quiet voice. It is quiet and not at superspeed, but for some, it may be hard to relax into it, but I have't actually been told that by anyone yet and that's why I give it 5 stars. I would say, listen to him on tv with your eyes closed. Now he does talk slower than when he is on tv, so if you can relax into that, this cd will work for you.

5 out of 5 stars Love the thoughts of this audio series.......2005-09-29

Even though this tape series is included in John Bigger package of How to develop your own psychic powers.
This tape is a stand alone with wonderful information on angels and guides. The best is the meditation. John has a great voice and can take you on a journey to metting you guides.

4 out of 5 stars Good meditations, just talks too fast.......2004-07-16

I really have enjoyed John Edward's meditations, especially the one "meeting my spiritual guides". What bothers me is he just talks way too fast and doesn't give you a chance to linger in the meditation. One meets their guide and John Edward instructs to ask several rapid questions such as their name, what I am to learn during this meditation and before he takes a breath and gives a chance to hear the answers we are asked to say good bye. I would of liked it better if he guides us to ask prepared questions on the instructional side of the tape and gives a chance to hear the answer to our question while he stays quiet for a minute. I do like that John Edward speaks in easy to visualize terms.

4 out of 5 stars These Tapes Will Help But..........2004-05-15

I have to agree with namedujour. John does rush through the breathing and leaves you gasping for air to try to catch up...even after years of being guided along with his meditations I still find myself consciously aware that...I cannot breath like that!

It's also true that at the end of one of the meditations you're left hanging a bit. I would have liked it if he allowed more time to visualize and connect. So I often find myself favouring the chakra meditation over that one.

However, regardless of those two minor flaws in the tapes, they WILL help guide you and open you Spiritually!

John started me years ago on a great Spiritual journey that has and will have life long lasting effects as he taught me to open my awareness and my paradigms.

If you're at the place where you can feel it in your heart, that feeling, that longing for a Spiritual awakening...ready to put aside old school traditions and wake your Spirit up to Spiritual truth then these tapes will definitely help you on that journey of life!

Let John help you become more Spiritually aware as you open up your mind and soul to Universal Truth!
