Book Description

One of the most widely read and controversial works of the Harlem Renaissance, The Blacker the Berry...was the first novel to openly explore prejudice within the Black community. This pioneering novel found a way beyond the bondage of Blackness in American life to a new meaning in truth and beauty.

Emma Lou Brown's dark complexion is a source of sorrow and humiliation -- not only to herself, but to her lighter-skinned family and friends and to the white community of Boise, Idaho, her home-town. As a young woman, Emma travels to New York's Harlem, hoping to find a safe haven in the Black Mecca of the 1920s. Wallace Thurman re-creates this legendary time and place in rich detail, describing Emma's visits to nightclubs and dance halls and house-rent parties, her sex life and her catastrophic love affairs, her dreams and her disillusions -- and the momentous decision she makes in order to survive.

A lost classic of Black American literature, The Blacker the Berry...is a compelling portrait of the destructive depth of racial bias in this country. A new introduction by Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, author of The Sweeter the Juice, highlights the timelessness of the issues of race and skin color in America.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book!.......2007-04-23

The Blacker the Berry was assigned to me years ago at Rutgers University for a Harlem Renaissance class. I have to say that it had a tremendous impact because I remember it so well more than the other books or reading assignments given to us. The Blacker the Berry is the story of an African American woman who is considered too dark by her own race and community. It's one thing when you face prejudice from another race but to get mistreated by your own like being abused by a member of the family. Wallace Thurman is still relatively obscure regarding writers whether African American or American. This book is surely a forgotten masterpiece of the Harlem Renaissance. It packs a punch when you read it and like me, it's hard to forget that impression.

5 out of 5 stars The more things change.............2007-03-29

Having grown up a dark-skinned male in the color-conscious city of Charleston SC (the book itself mentions this fact in passing) in the 1980s when Prince and El Debarge was what was happening for the ladies, I could truly relate to the tale of Emma Lou.

What I found particularly interesting in this saga of self-hate is how little it has changed since the best attemtps of Stokely Carmicheal and Malcolm X. One interesting scene in particular shows Emma Lou with a male friend at an Apollo Theater-type cabaret while the black comedians are making foul jokes about dark-skinned women while the pretty girls are idealized as light skinned. Emma Lou is rightly insulted. Compare this to modern comedians on Booty Entertainment television (BET) with gags like "Yo mama so black she spent all day in night school!" and the idealization of lighter women in videos.

The cruel remarks from adults that surround Emma Lou in her native Utah (also the home of author Wallace Thurman) can be heard today among ignorant parents toward the black children of various complexions today. Although in Emma Lou's case, one must also consider the age old feelings of mothers toward children who physically resemble and remind them of wayward fathers.

Sadly, things like this still go on and the book shows the tragedy of emotional cruelty toward children. Read it and watch how you talk to children in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A Sad Commentary On Prejudice Based On Color.......2006-08-08

Wallace Thurman, one of the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, has created in Emma Lou Brown a character that you will remember long after you finish this short novel. Born in Boise, Idaho to a very light-skinned mother and dark father, she is the victim of what Thurman calls "intra-racial color prejudice." Emma leaves home after her high school graduation-- she is the only black student in her class-- goes to California to college, back home again, back to California again and then to Harlem in her quest to be accepted for who she is. This sad but very bright young woman's tragedy is that she constantly seeks out those persons whose skin color is lighter than hers while simultaneously is crushed when she is rejected by these same or other persons of a lighter hue. The "coffee-colored" Fats, for instance, says so cruelly of Emma, "Man you know I don't haul no coal." As Part 5 of the book indicates, what victory this young woman, who eats arsenic wafers and bleaches her face with peroxide in an effort to lighten her skin, achieves is pyrrhic.

One of Thurman's characters, rightly so, points out that "'in an environment where there are so many color-prejudiced whites, there are bound to be a number of color-prejudiced blacks. . . as you know prejudices are always caused by differences, and the majority group sets the standard.'" The lesson to be learned from this novel is obvious: it is difficult to believe in youself if from your earliest childhood, your parents-- in this instance Emma's mother-- have told you that you are ugly because of your color and therefore unworthy. Unfortunately this phenomenon does not affect just African-Americans but other racial and ethnic groups as well as Hollywood casting as well. It is no accident, for example, that Marilyn Monroe's stock soared after she became a blonde.

Mr. Thurman's novel would have been better if he had showed the reader more often than told him what is going on. Nevertheless, THE BLACKER THE BERRY, based, according to the author, on a "Negro folk saying," is well worth reading and would make a fine movie.

5 out of 5 stars Stimulating .......2005-12-19

This was excellent read! For me it was an heartfelt and also tragic story in many ways for the main character Emma Lou! She does alot soul searching and tries to find herself. She has a lot of issues and the main one she deals with in the book is her skin complexion. If you love the book "Bluest Eye" by Maya Angelou you will also love this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Truest Story Ever Told.......2005-05-26

I am not afraid to look the reality of colorism in the eye and acknowledge that it does exist within the black community. It is my greatest hope and dream that someday the dark skinned black and the light skinned black will be seen as the one family in the future. I want so much to love the lightskinned sister and brother as my own reflection and not be divided from them or made to feel that one is treated better than the other, but sadly, that day is not here and this book bravely and powerfully illustrates that point to the fullest.

I am a medium brown colored woman, my mother was very dark skinned and I have witnessed the evils of skin color prejudice all my life. In most situations, it was Black Men who were prejudiced against myself and the women around me beccause of our coloring. These men felt no shame or limit in their racist intra-family prejudice and measured their entire lives by how many light skinned or white women they could attain and how light brite their children could come out. It's everywhere and anyone who denies it is both a fool and a liar.

That is why I highly recommend THE BLACKER THE BERRY by Wallace Thurman. There is no truer portrait of the self-hatred among our people than the one extolled in this book, and what makes it even sadder is that this book was written in the 1920's. So that only shows how deep this kind of evil runs.

Lately, I have become very interested in this subject and I have searched for other books that explore this subject with intelligence, honest, beauty and wisdom and I have found several that I consider to be classics on the subject of Colorism.

(1) MARITA GOLDEN'S book "Don't Play In the Sun" is definitely the most modern up to date book of the bunch. It expertly weaves the story of her life experiences in the 1960's Black Power movement with the current struggles of women like Serena Williams and India Arie to find their way in the world, even in the midst of being shunned and ignored by the black community itself. The book's analysis of the Hollywood casting system and the "Mulatto Follies" of BET and MTV is priceless.

(2) "The Bluest Eye" by TONI MORRISON is by far the most riveting and painful book that I have read on this subject of colorism. I believe that her book, more than any mother, gets to the psychological and historical root cause of the problem and exposes the mode in which we pass the problem on generation to generation. The destruction of an innocent black girl named Pecola Breedlove will leave you heartbroken and shocked as you see the bold naked truth unfold right before your eyes. You can't ignore this book, because the story being told is the one that you are all too familiar with no matter what color you are.

(3) "Flesh and the Devil" by African novelist KOLA BOOF is another deeply powerful book that examines colorism, but not out in the open. This book is unique in that it focuses on a very enchanting love story between a Black Prince and Princess and follows their reincarnations through history as they struggle to find their way back to each other. Through detailed moments in black history, both in Africa and the United States, the provocative author highlights the way that black people originally viewed their beauty and humanity and then juxtuposes it against the way they see themselves now in the modern world. The result is nothing less than devastating. I love this book so much, because the storytelling is so rich and the depth is so sweeping and grand. Anyone who loves good writing and is proud to be descended from the Black race will find themselves literally changed forever by the powerful images depicted in this very poetically moving story.

(4) "The Color Complex"--VARIOUS AUTHORS, is a very simple, straight forward analysis from a sociological point of view. Much research and statistical facts are used to illustrate that our communities are infested with these issues.

(5) "The Darkest Child" by Dolores Philips is another great novel that shows us the poor blacks who live under the poverty line ingesting these complex social hierarchies based on color and how they not only expose their children to them, but force the entire community to live by the "color code". Everybody is used to it from slavery and the system goes on and on unchallenged. In this book, Tangy Mae, the darkest of 10 children by the white-looking mother Rozelle, struggles to find her dignity and confidence in the midst of her evil light skinned mother inflicting one horrid abuse on top of the other. One thing I will say for the evil white-looking mother, Rozelle, is that she treated all of her children hiddeously and with contempt, from the whitest to the blackest. But she killed the child who was born looking like Tangy Mae and that spoke volumnes. This book is a very real metaphor for what goes on. Very real.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and poignant !!.......2003-12-03

A lovely romance, which is tenderly written and beautifully unveiled. The reader basks in this provocative romance- a story of a love affair between two heartwarming people.

Lady Heather Duval, is not the standard beauty of romance reading. She is an attractive, gentle person, but she is not perfect -- he maimed her -- her own father ...

"A small, black-haired child toddled up ... next to her father's leg. Curiously she stretched out a tiny finger toward the smooth metal. Her father whirled on her. "Don't touch that brat!" he snarled. With the back of his hand, he dealt her a blow across the cheek that sent her tumbling to the floor. Her lips trebled, but she made not a sound ... (Her mother) paid little heed. "Find your bed," she ordered brusquely, "and don't come out till morning." The child crawled to a straw pallet in the corner. Shivering, she curled into a tight little ball."

Such was the beginning of Heather Duval Elliot's life. Heart wrenching.

A childhood filled with sadness, "Did you really think we liked you, Heather? ... Well, no one does. No one wants to be near you ... You're not like us, Heather Duval."

Heather Duval was the orphaned ward of the Earl of Stonehurst and his countess. Two wonderful chosen parents who raised her with warmth and love ...

"No you are not a child of my womb, not a child of his loins, but you are a child of my heart, of our hearts. No child of mine, of ours, could be more our own that you."

But Heather knew a man would never love her, nor would she know the joy of a child against her breast .. .

                "Tears ran ... Her shoulders shook, "I'm not beautiful ... I ... I'm ... I'm deformed."

Damien Tremayne, the Earl of Deverell was the rage of London; eligible, wickedly attractive, and he wanted Heather.

"Damien stood there, in the center of the ballroom ... she knew the guests had gone utterly quiet. Every eye in the ballroom was turned upon him ... And then he did something she never would have expected. Indeed, the last thing on earth she expected... He held out his hand to her."

                Sigh, a wonderful book

                Grace Atkinson, Ontario - Canada.

3 out of 5 stars another good book.......2001-12-22

Well I must say that I really enjoyed this book. Samantha James brings us a real person in the form of the heroine Heather. She has a limp. I like it when the characters are not perfect. The hero is Damien who is trying to track down the killer of his brother Giles. Damien takes a position at Heather's estate as the overseer. Well they find themselves very attracted to each other and manage to fall in love even though society still shuns Heather because of her limp. Damien makes it well known that he cares not about her limp but loves everything about her. I would like to read a book about Heather's parents because they seem so much in love also.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing Like A Little Deception to Bring People Together.......2000-12-09

O.k. I admit it, I first felt sorry for Heather when I read that she had a limp. But we really quickly learn not to pitty her. She is truly a strong women. Her parents recognized it and gave her an estate to run. Then Damien comes along, a godsend, to help her run her estate. Little does she know that he is really after her REAL father and doesn't want to love her. The chemistry is almost instant, but alas doom comes when Damien doesn't believe that she doesn't remember her real father and forces her adoptive parents to reveal all. The a chance meeting in London reignites the passions and the game is on. Lets us just say that it is a true romance novel from here on. The love blooms, but so does the danger. I learned to love Heather's independance, but underneath it all, she is searching for someone to love her (aren't we all).

5 out of 5 stars Another winner by Samanatha James!.......2000-11-21

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little different in that the heroine was not perfect but it made the love story between Heather and Damien all the more enjoyable. He didn't care that she walked with a limp and I loved the scene where he waits on the dance floor and puts his hand out to her. I enjoy Samanatha James' books anyway. I loved Just One Kiss and One Moonlit Night. She never disappoints me. I only have to see her name on the cover and will buy the book without having to read the excerpt inside the cover to see if it's something I would be intersted in. Read the book. You won't be disappointed. It is a beautiful love story.

                4 out of 5 stars What a book!.......2000-02-14

This was a wonderful book, but you do need several hankys to get through it. The heroine was stubborn but she finally came around. Damion was true to form for Samatha James. I love her books

A legend among sci-fi readers, C.J. Cherryh's Union-Alliance novels, while separate and complete in themselves, are part of a much larger tapestry-a future history spanning 5,000 years of human civilization.

Downbelow Station is the book that won Cherryh a Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1982. A blockbuster space opera of the rebellion between Earth and its far-flung colonies, it is a classic science fiction masterwork.

Their names were Sandor and Allison. Kreja and Reilly respectively. Reilly meant something in the offices and bars of Viking Station: it meant the merchanters of the great ship Dublin Again, based at Fargone, respectable haulers on a loop that included all the circle of Union stars, Mariner and Russell's, Esperance and Paradise, Wyatt's and Cyteen, Fargone and Voyager and back to Viking. It was a Name among merchanters, and a power to be considered, wherever it went.
Kreja meant nothing at Viking, having flourished only at distant Pan-paris and Esperance in its day: at Mariner, under an alias, it meant a bad debt, and the same at Russell's. The Kreja ship was currently named Lucy, and she was supposedly based at Wyatt's, which was as far away as possible and almost farther away than reasonable for such a small and aged freighter, claiming to run margin cargo for a Wyatt's combine. Customs always searched her, though she called here regularly. Small, star-capable ships on which the crew was not related by blood, on which in fact there were only two haggard men, and one not the same as at last docking. such ships were not comfortably received at station docks, and received careful scrutiny.
Lucy was a freighter by statement, a long-hauler which ran smallish consignments independent of its combine's close direction, since the combine had no offices on Viking. She was a passenger carrier when anyone would trust her- no one did, though the display boards carried her offer. She took merchanter transfers if she could get them...

I'll open by saying this is one of my all time favorites of Ms. Cherryh's. While it's pure Space Opera, it's done so well. The characters are 3-dimensional, the descriptions are alive, and the action is interesting. Ms. Cherryh does an excellent job following up The Downbelow Station. A pleasure to read!

If you enjoy Ms. Cherryh's works or enjoy fast action books dealing with people, I highly recommend this book!

Carolyn Cherryh has the true storyteller's knack of being able to approach a huge, sprawling, complexly plotted yarn in terms of its constituent characters and events. But where _Downbelow Station_ -- which you really ought to have read in order to grasp all the back-story and milieu of this future -- is a tangled skein, _Merchanter's Luck_ is a single twist of two threads. Sandor Kreja is the only surviving member of the trading family that operated and lived aboard LUCY, a down-at-the-heels merchant ship not unlike a tramp steamer, carrying small cargoes and unfussy passengers and getting by on the margins of life. Allison Reilly, on the other hand, is a promising member of the large, wealthy mercantile family that inhabits DUBLIN AGAIN, a name to be reckoned with and respected among the stations whose ports it frequents. But that's just the problem: The Reilly family is *too* large. Allison is likely to be on rejuv herself by the time she climbs the advancement ladder far enough to be able to sit the bridge. They meet happenstantially, Sandy is completely taken with the tall, beautiful, regal Allie, and when DUBLIN goes off to Pell on the next leg of her trading loop among the stations, he pilots LUCY through a series of jumps singlehandedly in order to follow her. One thing leads to another, and when his past, checkered like that of all marginers, leads to potential major troubles with the Alliance and with the ominous Captain Mallory of the warship NORWAY (a shivver-provoking force in _Downbelow Station_), Allie jumps in to help him -- and, not incidentally, herself -- by leaving her family with a few like-minded cousins and making a crew for LUCY. But now, Sandor has to learn to trust others with his ship and its ghosts, and the Dubliners have to learn to trust someone who's not one of them. Cherryh is also expert at divulging her characters' minds and motivations through telling detail, so everyone you'll meet here is fully realized. And their story becomes the kind of tale merchanters, and even stationers, will tell each other for many years in the portside bars of Pell and Viking.

I'm not sure the reviews listed for this book go with this book. What about C.J. Cherryh?! It has been awhile since I read it, but isn't this book part of her downbelow station universe? Please check this out. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars As Always--Hard to Put Down.......2002-08-19

C.J. Cherryh is one of the best sci-fi writers of the last twenty years. I won't say the best sci-fi writer ever because such extreme generalizations open one up to refutations on a not inconsiderable scale. Suffice it to say she never fails to impress. Her combination of strong, compassionate characterization and hard sci-fi marks her as one of the greats. Her well-imagined future is a remarkable achievement, being a grab-bag of military, political, sociological issues with some villains but mostly flawed individuals trying to survive in a grimy but not unhopeful universe.

On to the novel! Merchanter is a short read. In a way, it is more a novella than a novel. The characterizations are much sparser than in such novels as Cyteen and Invader. The plot is relatively simplistic, moves quickly and is elegantly constructed. Typical for C.J. Cherryh, the reader's interest is caught and held by the slow, manipulative maneuverings within a tight plot. Also typical for C.J. Cherryh, Merchanter ends abruptly, leaving the reader wanting more. Occasionally, such Cherryh endings are anti-climatic, but in this particular case, it is exactly right.

                        Recommendation: Buy it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Heartwrenching novel.......2001-06-02

This book screams loneliness at you. The story is about a young boy who's struggling to come to terms with the loss of his family. He's the only survivor of his family since they were killed in a pirate attack on the ship that is their home and his brother later in an EVA accident. His only company is his brother's recorded instructions on how to fly the ship.

His journey to learn to trust other people and to come to terms with the tragedy in his life is truly heartwrenching and will leave you with a melancholy ache and a good feeling of hope despite it all. I highly recommend this book.

Learning from the Tanya offers a key for unlocking the mysteries of one of the most extraordinary books of moral teachings ever written. A seminal document in the study of Kabbalah, the Tanya explores and solves the dilemmas of the human soul by arriving at the root causes of its struggles. Though it is a classic Jewish spiritual text, the Tanya and its commentary take a broad and comprehensive approach that is neither specific to Judaism nor tied to a particular personality type or time or point of view.

5 out of 5 stars amazon's excerpt does not reflect this excellent book.......2007-08-21

amazon.com: please change the excerpt from the book. as a big fan of the tanya, i must say this is an excellent book. rabbi steinsaltz' commentary is very helpful and even inspiring. helping to give more light to the great teachings of the alter-rebbe.

the excerpt here is too "legal sounding". for example, look at the comments on chpt. 26...or almost any other chapter. the book is written well and commmunicates well the spirit of the tanya for newcomers or those familiar with the text.

please get a new excerpt!! amazon, are you listening???

At times an inspired explanation and exploration of the first Chabad Rebbe's book of Tanya. Rabbi Steinsaltz uses more words to say what the Rebbe says in just a few, but for most of us this is necessary to understand in depth and apply to ourselves what the Tanya is really saying. Many paragraphs in this book sound like they were written from an inspired state.
