Book Description
Sexy, surprising, and subversively wise,
Babyji is the story of Anamika Sharma, a spirited student growing up in Delhi. At school she is an ace at quantum physics. At home she sneaks off to her parents’ scooter garage to read the Kamasutra. Before long she has seduced an elegant older divorcée and the family servant, and has caught the eye of a classmate coveted by all the boys.
With the world of adulthood dancing before her, Anamika confronts questions that would test someone twice her age. Ebullient, unfettered, and introducing one of the most charming heroines in contemporary fiction,
Babyji is irresistible.
Customer Reviews:
Daring but disappointing.......2007-06-15
Babyji is the story of Anamika, 16, as she discovers herself and her sexuality through a number of relationships - one with an older woman, India, another with her young live-in servant Rani, and one with Sheela, a classmate of hers. I didn't find the story particularly interesting and I felt the story lacked character development and real "events" - all that happens is that Anamika is spending her days going from one girl to another without any kind of depth apart from a couple of interesting thoughts per chapter which are not developed any further. Each character would have benefited from being further developed and because Anamika doesn't focus on any of them, neither does the book.
I read 3/4 of this book before giving up. There are more interesting stories about relationships between women in books such as Pages for You.
Brilliant book.......2006-10-18
I think most intellectually precocious girls are also sexually precocious, at least in their fantasies - watch out for those bookish girls, when they decide to unleash their sexuality it's usually intense.
The narrator of Babyji is Anamika, an Indian girl in her final year of high school who unleashes herself in a big way. She seduces an older woman, and the family servant, and her friend at school.
Anamika struck me as a real archetype, a girl with a psychological profile that I've noticed in a number of my queer girl friends. She's a highly intelligent oldest child who has probably grown up thinking of herself as a boy and a girl. Anamika wants to get a good job and earn money so that she can support a wife.
Anamika friend's father recognizes that Anamika is sexually precocious and propositions her. She may or may not be attracted to him - she's got a lot on her plate with her three female lovers - but she takes his advice and reads Lolita. She loves the book, but to my utter delight she doesn't identify with Lolita, she identifies with Humbert. Anamika feels the guilt of her own taboo attraction to girls. There is something brilliant in these reversals that says so much to me that is true about this character archetype.
I went to a reading by Dawesar at Shakespeare's Books here in Paris for her new book, That Summer in Paris, and I'm happy to report that she's a real hottie in person.
This is a brilliant book. I keep thinking about Anamika. Read the book and see if she sticks around in your head too.
Totally Crazy & Hilarious Read.......2006-07-28
I could totally relate to Babyji...she's a hilarious character and completely frivolous at that too!
Abha has built wonderful characters befitting her ability to tell a funny tale.
I seriously hope there is a sequel to this one! :)
Great!!!.......2006-06-12
Great plot. A neat and very well written description of the characters' feelings and of the sorrounding Indian society. A real masterpiece!
Babyji is a muthafvckin' P-I-M-P!.......2006-06-05
That book is HAWT. Check out some of what the other reviewers have said, I agree (just being a little silly). The main character is so sensual and precocious, nerdy yet daring and adventurous. I wish I had half the balls she has at her age than I do now! So fantastically written and you are seduced by each word. I loved the empowered women in the book as well and Babyji's confidence as she figures out who she is and where in the world she belongs. It's definitely on top, I must see a sequel to this at once!

Customer Reviews:
Brooding Werewolf Loves a Crippled Socialite.......2004-12-03
"To Catch a Wolf" is both the first Krinard book and first werewolf book I've ever read - and I quite enjoyed it. The writing was crisp and elegant, and the story itself had interesting characters and a creative setting. I also understand it is part of a series, of which I am sure to read.
Set in Colorado in the late 1800s, "To Catch" revolves around two love triangles. The first includes ex-convict Morgan Holt (a werewolf who wants nothing to do with humans), crippled socialite Athena (a repressed werewolf), and snake charmer Tamar (a voluptuous circus freak with reptile skin). The second love triangle includes ruthless businessman Niall (Athena's human half-brother), horse tamer Caitlin (a pixy of a circus performer), and social climber Cecily (scheming her way up through false friendship).
The heroes are Morgan and Athena, who struggle to accept their love for one another. Their challenges are more mental in nature: Morgan was imprisoned for a crime he cannot forget while Athena is not only crippled in body, but also in spirit, and doesn't even realize it. This is a story about how love heals all types of wounds.
I thoroughly enjoyed Morgan. Krinard's descriptions of him, as either man or wolf, were beautifully sad, savage, and majestic. As for the heroine - at first, I was annoyed with Athena and all her self-serving charities, but as her inner wolf began to show, I began to soften toward her. I couldn't wait for them to finally come together.
Although I really enjoyed this book, there were a couple things that bothered me. For one, while Krinard writes elegantly and rather creatively, she also tended to overwrite, resulting in some scenes and dialogue that dragged a bit. She also "overwrote" a couple characters, too, especially Niall, who started off as a great anti-hero, but ended up a crazy jerk (though I think we're supposed to like him; after all, Caitlin did). Another major problem I had was with Morgan's secret. When it was finally revealed, I did not think his crime was worth all the guilt and unhappiness heaped upon him.
However, I was pleased to see that these werewolves were not the ugly, murderous monsters you see in the movies. Most of the time, as werewolves, Morgan and Athena wander around in wolf form, doing wolf things, like running with the pack, mating for life, etc. Very romantic.
Good Story.......2004-03-12
I love werewolf novels. This was a very good story. I enjoyed the various characters. Athena was crippled at an early age. Her family is very powerful. She lives with her brother and her life has been very sheltered as a society hostess. Morgan Holt is a werewolf who was convicted for the killing of his father. Once he left prison he deserted mankind and traveled with the wolves. One day he is badly hurt and changes into a man and collapses in front of a circus. The circus people, meeting another "outcast", take Morgan in. Morgan decides to stay with the circus because he owes it to them, and they need his help to earn enough money to support them through the winter. Athena's brother just happens to meet the circus, and then Athena meets Morgan. This story is pretty much about Morgan and Athena's growing relationship and how she will have to learn how to let her fear go, and Morgan will have to learn how to love and trust again. Very good story.
An author who pleases..........2003-12-25
Morgan Holt is a dangerous man. Even if he were not a convicted killer, that would be true. He is a werewolf, but does not really fit in either the world of men or wolves. He has, however, managed to find a temporary home in a traveling circus. He is not the kind of man you would expect to be charitable, at first glance.
Yet, it is charity that will bring him to his destiny. When the troupe journeys to Denver to perform for a charitable event, Morgan comes face to face with a woman who will change his life. Athena Munroe appears frail and weak, bound to a wheelchair. He knows there is more to her than that; she is another of his kind, meant to run free.
Society demands that they deny who and what they are. It's dangerous, and exciting. Choices will be demanded by love that will either destroy the two or give them life.
**** You will see why Susan Krinard is considered the best werewolf writer of the day. She draws characters who bridge classes for love and defy the odds. Historically, her scenes are realistic and her players dynamic. You will never go wrong reading one of her books. ****
Reviewed by Amanda Killgore.
Very Disappointing - Spoiler.......2003-11-20
I was very disappointed with this novel. I loved Susan Krinard's Once A Wolf and Secret Of The Wolf so I was looking forward to this book. It was too "preachy" for lack of a better word. I lost whatever respect I had for Athena after she repeatedly failed to realize how much danger she was in from her brother. Morgan let her brother shoot him rather than defend himself and risk her anger. I don't know what the hell Krinard was thinking. The sanctity of life stops when the other person is trying to murder you or blackmail you into being basically enslaved.
It was okay.......2003-10-23
The book was interesting and could definitely stand on its own (away from the other in the series). I just wished that there was a connection back to the other stories. The series is written because the characters are connected in some way. I wanted to see some sort of connection made besides a name.

Best book found.......2007-05-26
This book is the most biblically sound teaching I have ever read. I would love to write more but I will let the book speak for itself.
Enthusiastic, but not scripturally sound.......2006-03-06
I'm not a Pentacostal, but I attend a Spirit-filled bible study (which I enjoy) where I was lent this book. The author insists many times that every believer can have all the spiritual gifts, contrary to scripture. He plays fast and loose with his interpretation of scripture. His categorizations of the gifts also seem somewhat arbitrary, and he leaves out gifts such as teaching and apostleship. I'm open to the spiritual gifts continuing today, but it's in spite of Les Sumrall's arguments, not because of them.
It's a good practical book to inform and stir your interest.......2002-02-20
This book is a good primer on the Holy Spirit and the gifts. I don't believe that the author intended to be deep, but I believe that he wanted to pen a book that was assessible to most readers. There are those who would argue that the author assumes a Pentecostal stance, but he does have the right to write about the gifts based on his experience as long as he doesn't violate Scripture. He does not. He speaks about the gifts of the Spirit operating in his own life and also relates the gifts to what is reflected in the lives of biblical characters. Once again, this book is not meant to be a deep theological tome. They do exist. For those readers seeking greater depth and scholarship, I would suggest looking at The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts: In the New Testatment Chuch and Today by Max Turner. Other authors to consider are Gorodn D. Fee, Richard Hays, and Craig Blomberg.
Not exceptional.......2000-03-26
This book has good information and helpful understanding of the individual gifts. However, I found it not very well written, and also somewhat biased toward a pentecostal or "Full Gospel" understanding of the spiritual gifts, which is good, but I felt that he was not very well rounded in his understanding, presenting one interpretation only.
This book is a MUST!.......1999-10-13
I haven't even finished the book and I love it! Dr. Sumrall does a great job defining the gifts, their purposes, and examples on how they're used! This book is a must for Holy Ghost Christians who are seeking spiritual gifts. You've got to buy it!
Book Description
(Foreword by John MacArthur) A definitive look at what the New Testament really says about the work of the Holy Spirit in our world today. Dispels teachings not founded in Scripture and builds an accurate and meaningful theology of the Holy Spirit's fruits, gifts, and authority.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book on the Holy Spirit.......2004-04-29
Dr. Larry Pettegrew is to be praised for his book on the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the context of the New Covenant. Dr. Pettegrew does a great job of not only teaching on the ministries of the Spirit but he gives hundreds of Scriptures for his points. He deals with nearly every possible work in the new covenant from coversion to glorification.
If you are a Charismatic you may not fully agree with all that Dr. Pettegrew writes concerning the Spirit but nonetheless he will cause you to biblically think about the Holy Spirit and remain committed to biblical truth (1 Timothy 4:16; Titus 2:1).

Pure Gold.......2006-03-29
This is hands down the best book that I have ever read on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Who has more credibility than Reinhard Bonnke to write such a book? God backs him up. He sees what he writes about. You just can't fake the incredibly large crowds that this man ministers to. He pulls no punches in this book when he disagrees with some of the more flaky teachings that you see in places like TBN. He has no patience for positive confession teachings. You can't order God around. The Holy Spirit is sovereign. Spiritual gifts cannot be imparted from one person to the other. It is the Holy Spirit who decides. Thankyou Lord that there is someone out there who is balanced, scriptural and tells the truth about these things without quenching the Holy Spirit.
