Book Description
Aimee Bender’s Willful Creatures conjures a fantastical world in which authentic love blooms. This is a place where a boy with keys for fingers is a hero, a woman’s children are potatoes, and a little boy with an iron for a head is born to a family of pumpkin heads. With her singular mix of surrealism, musical prose, and keenly felt emotion, Bender once again proves herself to be a masterful chronicler of the human condition.

Somewhat Disappointing.......2007-01-06
This book was a bit of a letdown. After reading Aimee Bender's novel (and loving it), I was expecting a little bit more from this short story collection. There are some good stories in there, but overall the thing came off as being a little bit affected. This is disappointing, because Bender is obviously naturally off-kilter in her prose style, and she had a way of drawing you into her world in her novel. Stories like IRONHEAD, in contrast, just seem overly forced and twee, and have the effect of making me pity the main characters instead of identifying with them.
We are still talking about Aimee Bender, though, so the prose is good, and fans of her other short story collection will no doubt get a kick out of this one. It has its moments, but is too patchy overall to be considered a must-purchase item. Read her novel first. It's truly fantastic. Three Stars for this one.
Bender Bliss.......2006-04-27
I love the works of Aimee Bender. Willful Creatures proves that Bender does not stale with age, but get better and better and better. I recommend all her works, of course, but I believe Willfucl Creatures to be her best. A MUST READ for all fans of magical realism, stories about relationships and/or heartache, or just good stories in general. An evening spent with Aimee Bender is an evening spent in bliss.
5 STARS???????!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-08
I think this tops my list for the worst books I've ever read. I enjoy fantasy type books...and weird kind of stuff...but this was just plain stupid and sophmoric. I could have written a better book than this and I don't have ANY writing skills. GOD!!! This was worse than awful. 0 stars would be more like it, but they didn't have that as an option. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID...DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. If you want to read a really weird, but interesting book...read "Geek Love"...it is WAY OUT THERE, but at least there is a plot to the story. I mean it was REALLY WEIRD...but it was good, as long as you know what it's about before you start. Pass on "Willful Creatures". I put this book in the "used" book rack at the hotel where I was staying. It was gone by that afternoon, and back in the rack by the next morning...with a page corner turned down (to mark their place) about 1/4 of the way through the little, tiny book. At least I forced myself to finish it...this unsuspecting reader couldn't hold out any longer...I should have done the same thing.
This quirky, surreal short-story collection is perfect!.......2005-10-11
This is one of the strangest short-story collections I have ever read. Then again, I had come to expect that from the author of the brilliant short-fiction book The Girl in the Flammable Skirt. Now Aimee Bender writes some rather dark, strange and disarming stories in Willful Creatures that will truly shock you and keep you thinking long after you finish reading each story. The characters are nameless, unflinching in their actions and quite unlikeable, doing things that will repel and compel you at the same time. From bad parents, shameless seducers and abusers who target upon the weak, this collection has it all. My favorite stories are "The Leading Man," "Debbieland," "Dearth," "The Meeting," and "End of the Line." All of the stories are amazing, but the aforementioned ones stood out the most for me. I marvel at Bender's writing style. She reminds me a great deal of Amanda Filipacchi in that she mixes the outlandish with the mundane in an astonishing, hilarious twist. Are you in the bargain for some literary and surreal short stories? I recommend you read Willful Creatures. And give The Girl in the Flammable Skirt a whirl while you're at it.
Willful yes, but so very very odd.......2005-09-18
Bender's series of short stories knead out will to the very edges of humanity with her disarmingly charming and beloved "creatures" that include potato babies, and an insomniac with an iron for a head, among others.

She has written better!.......2006-04-14
I am a big fan of Sandra Brown. In fact the last book i have read by her was 'Envy' , by which i was so impressed that i had to read all her books, but somehow this one didn't live upto my expectations. Don't get me wrong. This was a good romance if that is all you are looking for... There was a depth to the characters, sexual tension was there, there were misunderstandings, insecurities, there was Gorgeous Philandering Hero and beautiful, shy but spirited heroine. In fact this was all a simple romance is supposed to be and that was the problem i had . It felt like i have read all this before, not this book but the story was just not... original, which i do agree not many romances are anyway but when you pick up Sandra Brown Novel you just expect something more than an average romance. Besides the engaging story you get witty and original dialogues, much more exciting sexual tension and hero you fall in love with but this one didn't do that for me.
Herione was also very confused. I didn't understand her need to keep her marriage free from any physical intimacy when she had already been intimate with her husband before marriage and she knew she had already fell in love with him and holding back nothing could make her pain for leaving him less. And then there was this matter of her running away from sticky situations. How could you like someone like that? i didn't
Her better romances are 'adam's fall','texas Sage','envy','bittersweet rain'.
standard Sandra B 101.......2005-10-27
This book incorporates all the standard elements from the Sandra Brown School of Romance:
Hot, steamy scenes......CHECK.
Flowery, verbose descriptions of love scenes ["portals of her womanhood"; "petals of her femininity"; "throbbing bulge of his manhood" ..you get it]......CHECK
A "plot" that will allow the heroine to engage in over-the-top sex with the hero but still wonder if he loves her back as he remains strangely tongue-tied in this department, thereby allowing the book to drag on to 200 pages.......CHECK
and of course, the standard Sandra obsession with illicit, forbidden love/sex...here the hero's mother continues to romance her ex-husband (a sheik no less!) who has his own family in Riyadh.
The result is a standard, time tested formulaic and inane drivel that is a very light and enjoyable read. Perfect as a beach or end-of-the day read. I can see myself reading it again in a couple of years. I for one, love her love her older romance books. They are so light and mindless that they are great fun. Isnt that what we really look for in a romance novel.
Pure escapist love story.......2005-10-17
Okay - so the plot is a little far-reaching and unrealistic. The hero is agressively over-confident, and the heroine frustratingly runs away from conflicts instead of confronting them with open communication. But who cares when the sensuality factor is sky-high! So is the beautifully descriptive writing. This is a book for getting lost in a romantic fantasy adventure in luscious settings such as a tropical Caribbean island and a horse-breeding plantation in Virginia. It's a magical feel-good romance.
one of brown's best romance hits!.......2005-09-27
i'm not going to bother you with the storyline of tiger prince. what i will say is it is one of sandra brown's best love stories. she has a talent for making readers disappear from their routine lifestyle and reappear into her storylines. i thought love's encore was her best work but after reading tiger prince i claim both as top reading material! if you enjoy a good romance story pick up tiger prince. you'll find yourself loving the handsome hero, prince derek and envy caren, the woman he desires above all others.
Hot, Steamy and Wonderful.......2005-07-01
Oh, I loved this one. Like `Adam's Fall', this book just had the magic touch. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Every last word. The two leading characters are great together. And the sex, TALK ABOUT HOT!! The prince was amazing; the 16 year old sister was a nice touch. The only thing that could have made this better was if she had been pregnant in the end. I Loved it, Loved it, Loved it. I definitely recommend!

Never Less than Superb.......2007-04-02
Iris Johansen's Tiger Prince is more than a romance, its suspensful, emotional and action packed. A young child Jane escapes life with her prostitute mother with the man (Patrick) she believes to be her father and her best friend Li Sung. She makes a promise to Patrick that if he will take them she will earn her keep and do whatever he asks. Years later, in India, Patrick is hired to build a railroad for the current ruler. The years have proved Patrick to be a severe alcoholic and Jane, who dresses in pants and men's shirts, and Li Sung have long been working day and night, supervising and making sure the work that supports them is done. When Jane meets sculptor Kartauk, who is hiding from the ruler's cruel son Prince Addar, she agrees to hide him until he can find his way out of the country.
A scottish lord, Ian has tracked his half brother Ruel to India, to talk him into returning home to Scotland and their estate. Ruel, who is known for his extreme good looks, has been attempting to get a meeting with the current ruler so he can make a deal to buy an Island, Cinnidar. When the crown Prince promises to get him an audience with his father if he can return Kartauk, Ruel sets out to seduce Jane into revealing Kartauk's whereabouts. He succeeds in his seduction but finds he is drawn to Jane like he has never been to any other woman. Soon it is revealed how evil the crown prince is, he uses Kartauk's skills to make death masks of people he has killed believing he can draw strength out of their spirits by praying to his pagan god with the masks. Soon Jane, Ruel, Ian and Li Sung plot to finish the railroad and get Kartauk out of the country. Ruel gets his audience with the ruler and buys Cinnidar. When a horrible accident results in Ian's being left paralyzed, Patrick blames Jane. Jane is horrified when Patrick blames her for ordering the cheap rails to save money when he was responsible, but Patrick reminds her of the promise she made as a child to do whatever he asks. Ruel is enraged when he finds out Ian's injury was preventable and vows to make Jane pay. The only thing is he cannot turn off his feelings for her no matter how hard he tries. Jane agrees to take care of Ian out of guilt along with Ian's fiance Margaret and the next few years show Ruel's mental cruelty to Jane take its toil. When the death of the Indian ruler leaves the path for Prince Abdar to seek his revenge from the small group, they must put their differences aside to survive the attack. Ruel forgives Jane and tells her he wants her in his life forever but can she let go of the hurt the years have taken?
This book not only presents us with lead characters with incredible depth but the supporting characters are worthy of their own stories. I think this was an awesome book, but if you read it please take time for it because it is full of detail and has no filler pages. Great story
reprint of a finelate nineteenth century India romantic thriller.......2007-03-04
Jane Barnaby and her guardian Patrick Reilly are on the Indian subcontinent constructing a railroad. When goldsmith John Kartauk angers the son of the maharaja Prince Abdar, Jane hides him. Abdar is outraged that he has not had the opportunity to display his displeasure with John; he cuts a deal with the MacClarens, Scottish half-brothers, Ian and Ruel, to find John. The MacClaren siblings believe that if they locate the also vanished Jane, they will have John too.
Roguish Ruel sees he can make a better deal by helping Jane get John to safety beyond the reach of the maharaja and consequently his son. The escape attempt fails miserably leading to a horrific mishap. Ruel holds Jane culpable for the failure and vows to avenge the catastrophe by sexually humiliating the woman he loves.
This is a reprint of an early 1990s romantic thriller that brings to life late nineteenth century India through mostly the eyes of Jane, but somewhat through the male support cast. .However, the deep look at the environs is a two edged sword as the background at times overwhelms the plot. Still in spite of not being among Iris Johansen's top works, fans of the author will enjoy watching the escapades of the lead duet, a likable pairing of distrusting souls in love and hate while wondering which emotion will conquer the other.

love all of her historical romances.......2006-07-26
I don't agree with the opinions of those that said this book was bad. While some of her other historical romances have been better, I enjoyed this one as well. Sure, the plot was improbable, but when I pick up a historical romance, it isn't for the probability, but for the entertainment. I have found all of her historical romances to be entertaining. I wish she would write more of them or include some of the steamier elements of her romance novels in her suspense work. She seems to have done away with the majority of those aspects in her suspense work and I miss it.
Very bad.......2006-07-24
I'm very merry that IJ stopped writing love stories and started writing thrillers. She writes much better thrillers than love stories.
Isn't it Unromantic?.......2004-08-09
Of all of Johansen's historical romances, this is by far, the worst. The hero and the heroine are compelling. However, the plot is muddled and improbable and overwhelms the love story. I would recommend any of Johansen's other historical romances over this one: Golden Barbarian, Magnificent Rogue, Storm Winds, or This Fierce Splendor.
Book Description
In this original Step 2 Disney Princess Step into Reading, Jasmine gets a tiger cub—and names him Rajah! Young princess fans will delight in learning how Rajah became Jasmine’s beloved pet tiger in this sweet story about kindness and friendship.
Customer Reviews:
An Early (but not too early) Reader - a review of "A Pet for a Princess".......2006-11-16
A Step 2 reader is described as being for children "Reading with Help". In the case of "A Pet for a Princess" I think we can say that this book will appeal to a broader audience.
First, this book will probably appeal to non-reading preschoolers who are interested in Jasmine and Rajah, her pet tiger. For older children - or advanced preschoolers who are beginning to read - I believe it will grab their interest, but that they will most certainly need adult help in tackling the text.
For one thing, not all of the sentences are simple. Some are compound. But more importantly, some of the vocabulary is going to be downright challenging. There are words like: friend, lonely, things, together, watched, butterflies, played, brushed, scratch, furry, harm, cozy, asleep, and the like.
And having just given a basic 100 Frequently Used Word test to a class of first graders, I can tell you that at more than half of them would not be able to sound out the above words.
So this book might not be at the right level at the moment, even given the pictorial cues. But given the 'princess-y" content, it's probably safe to assume that it eventually will be, and in the meantime there are the lovely pictures and a story you can read. A few lines of text (from six consecutive pages) follow so you can judge for yourself:
Jasmine liked
to rub and scratch
his furry belly.
Rajah liked it, too!
Purrrrr!
The princess kept Rajah
safe from harm.
And she loved to play
dress-up with him.
Four Stars. Edge to Edge color. A Step 2 book, this one is geared for Preschoolers, Kindergartners and First Graders who can identify some words but in most cases will need an adult to help them get through the entire story. The story is simple and it told in large text with mostly short sentences.
A great reading tool for your preschool princesses........2006-04-04
This is a great book for little girls learning to read. It's a story about how Princess Jasmine (of Aladdin fame) got her pet tiger, Rajah. The story, complete with big colorful pictures and short sentences with picture cues for beginning readers, tells of the relationship between the princess and her tiger as he grew up from cub to a big tiger. It's a sweet tale that little girls who have pets will especially enjoy. Disney Princess-obsessed preschoolers will love it and be able to manage the basic vocabulary in their quest to be readers. They can easily pick out which words they know by sight and sound out other small words phonetically. What is especially great is the repetition of certain phrases that help the beginning reader gain confidence.

THIS BOOK IS HARD TO BEAT!.......2004-08-04
My mother gave this book to my oldest son when he was 3 and he fell in love with the story! He is now 5 and it's still his favorite book. It's a wonderful lesson about how Leo the Lion's arrogance caused him to be outcast and "dethroned" by the other animals in his "kingdom." Looking back, Leo was able to see how useless he'd been as a king because of his being so arrogant and self-centered. By helping several of the other animals when they were having difficulties, Leo was able to prove to the other animals that he had genuinely changed and become a better "person." In the end the other animals invited Leo back to be their king again. This teaches such a wonderful lesson to children and I have bought at least a dozen copies of it to give to my children's schools and for birthday gifts for their friends. I have an extensive library of books for my children, but this book is one of the very best.

Book Description
Collisions of faiths are among the most threatening conflicts around the world at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In the face of these conflicts, this manifesto is a call to embrace religious pluralism. Tackling people 's fears of religious pluralism, the author demonstrates that citizens, religions, and identities can in fact survive in radically pluralist settings. He argues that the first address to communities involved in collisions of faith should not be the conventional plea for tolerance, but a call that at least one party risk hospitality toward the other. The book deals with conflicts that affect or occur within those nations whose polities can be called republican, open, democratic, liberal, or free, particularly the UK, the US, and Western Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Marty, worth a look.......2006-06-09
There is a fine distinction between a review and a response, and I want to walk that line. This book is a valuable contribution to the current discussion on how religions relate to each other.
As is characteristic of Marty, he marshalls studies, reports, and personal anecdotes to make his point. In brief, that point is that tolerance preserves the problems of intolerance. By tolerating, I retain my hold on the truth, and reduce to other to an image I understand and control.
Marty's "manifesto" here is that we should "risk hospitality" in relating to the "other/stranger." This hospitality, according to his "domestic analogy," involves inviting the stranger into my home, but not altering the religious articles and icons I display. I invite the other without changing. Marty describes hospitality as engaging the other, feeding him/her, talking, and most of all sharing stories. The experience may or may not change me.
While I admire this effort, I wonder if Marty's description of hospitality really goes far enough. The risk, to me, seems minimal. If we compare his definition of hospitality to that of Jacques Derrida in "Philosophy in a Time of Terror," or anywhere he discusses his concept of cosmopolitanism, Marty seems to fail to escape the realm of tolerance.
For Derrida, the risk of hospitality must risk everything, putting no conditions on who may arrive, or what may happen.
Nevertheless, Marty's book is well worth reading and an important contribution to interfaith conversation.
May we risk more.
Dealing with pluralism.......2005-08-25
In the contemporary context, when conflicts between people of different faiths abound, we must deal with pluralism. Due to many different factors, the faiths of the world are colliding more now than ever. Moreover, they are coming into conflict not only in the internationl arena, but also down the block and within families. There are many ways to deal with the issue of pluralism, ranging from isolation and hostility to relativism. Dr. Marty suggests that we address civic pluralism by offering hospitality to the stranger. Rather than tolerance, where the "belonger" retains power over the "stranger," hospitality forces people of faith to risk opening themselves to the other.
This book is wonderful first step. It does not argue for a utopian pipedream, but rather a practical means through which we can get along. Through hospitality we will find that faiths do not lose their distinctiveness, but are strengthened by both external and internal critique.

Book Description
Hedrick explores the tension, or collision, that occurs when one studies the Jesus of faith with the critical eye of historical scholarship. He outlines the nature of historical inquiry, gives a brief history of how scholars have understood Jesus, and identifies the essential issues confronting the reader of the New Testament Gospel accounts of Jesus: discrepancies, contradictions, and differences as well as strong similarities among different writers.
"For many Christians, studying the historical Jesus disrupts and challenges their comfortable faith in the divine Christ of the creeds they have repeated all their lives. According to Hedrick, such conflict can 'bring new insights, a broader understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the complementary relationship between faith and history.' . . . In clear and precise prose, Hedrick asserts that the best way to understand the historical Jesus is to study the Gospels as 1st-century texts that present us with information about the life and death of Jesus. His book serves as an introduction to the central conflicts inherent in the contemporary study of Jesus."

Customer Reviews:
An excellent place to start........2002-11-06
First of all, yes, this book does display some of Dr. Hedrick's biases. But, overall the book is an invaluable resource and introduction of modern Jesus scholarship. If you are a beginner in the field this book will help you hit the ground running. Do keep Dr. Hedrick's biases in mind though, and remember as his title may not suggest, he is a man of faith. Dr. Hedrick does display certain agendas, but when these are looked at in a proper manner, they will help you think critically.
When fact and fiction collide we get a book like this.......2002-06-13
When fact and fiction collide we get a book like this one. Lets start with some of the high points.
The book is well written, and I really liked the format. The author lays out each chapter with clear writing, study questions and notes at the end of each chapter, and recommending reading, which is wonderful. The fact portion of the book, namely the comparison of existing Biblical passages, is well presented and lets the reader come to their own conclusions. The author has done his homework when it comes to presenting already well known scholarly theories like the famous, but non-existent, Q documents.
However, it is when the author tries to steer the conclusions with an obvious agenda that the book quickly deteriorates into a poorly reasoned version of the Jesus Seminar theories.
The first 6 chapters are presented well as described above, but the remaining chapters are clearly written with a faulty and biased conclusion already in mind.
For example in chapter 7 in the section "Jesus Tradition" the author inexplicably jumps into theories that are widely disputed by most Biblical scholars, by trying to read into the New Testament Gospels intent that is not supported by any credible evidence. For example he states that "The evolving oral tradition made no distinction between the prophetic word of the lord and the word of the historical man". However, previously in the book he outlines and compares many of the historical sayings and finds little dissimilarity among the different reporters and even goes as far as validating the differences as what one would expect from different viewpoints of historical and factual reporting.
His over-reliance on Gnostic texts and the work of the Jesus Seminar clouds what would otherwise be a pretty good and objective layout of Biblical information.
If you are interested in a comparison of Biblical texts, and considering some interesting questions about them, this book does a decent job of that for the first two thirds. Skip the last third of the book however, as the author quickly demonstrates what happens when fact and fiction collide with poor results and illogical and biased assumptions.

Product Description
Few things seem to press more on the minds of Christians than the search for God's will for their lives: Where is God leading me, how can I know, and what are the signs? As he cites the various methods people use for .nding answers to these questions, along with the disappointment and disillusionment many have suffered, author Dan Schaeffer examines this subject from a new vantage point. ""We will look at the will of God as a journey, rather than a destination; something to walk in, rather than just seek out."" An insightful, inspiring, and healing examination of an ever-popular subject.

FOR THOSE WITH QUESTIONS,IT HAS ANSWERS........2007-09-03
AN EXCELLENT BOOK, THAT GIVES A GREAT INSIGHT INTO HOW GOD REVEALS HIS WILL TO US. ( AND, SOMETIMES, HOW IT "SEEMS" HE DOES NOT !!!) MR. SCHAEFFER'S TREASTISE IS EASILY COMPARABLE TO JOYCE MEYER AND JOEL OSTEEN, TWO OTHER AUTHORS WHO HAVE WRITTEN SIMILAR BOOKS. A "MUST HAVE" FOR ANYONE WITH QUESTIONS ON THIS SUBJECT.

Book Description
The story of a young man's struggle with the Roman Catholic Church, his family, his friends, and eventually himself. This book reads like a novel and is filled with dialogue and debates with Jesuit priests and others as the main character searches for the truth, debating and arguing with both family members and members of the Catholic clergy. At times he loses his focus as he takes out his emotional frustrations on those with whom he debates. Why is he always angry? Why does he refuse to get close to others? He knows his Bible and yet the peace he searches for becomes more elusive. This book makes an excellent evangelistic tool, as the way of salvation is clearly taught and explained through the book's action. This is not the usual Christian inspirational book. Rather, it is the blunt and difficult story of one man's journey from his church to the foot of the cross, and from self-doubt to self-realization.
The debates with Jesuit priests at Boston College are unlike anything now in print. The author has lived this and he has been there. As in most things in life, there is no substitute for experience. Knowing the mind of the opposition comes from constant contact with the opposition, and not from taking a course on the subject.
