Book Description

At once a coming-of-age tale and a heart-rending love story, Wild Ginger explores the devastating experience of the Cultural Revolution, which defined Anchee Min's youth. The beautiful, iron-willed Wild Ginger is only in elementary school when she is singled out by the Red Guards for her "foreign-colored eyes." Her classmate Maple is also a target of persecution. The novel chronicles the two girls" maturing in Shanghai in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Chairman Mao ruled absolutely and his followers took up arms in his name. Wild Ginger grows up to become a model Maoist, but her love for a man soon places her in an untenable position and ultimately in mortal danger. This slim and powerful novel "examines the fragile sensibilities and emotions of an entire generation of Chinese youth" (Washington Post) and brilliantly delineates the psychological and sexual perversion of those times.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but not great.......2007-08-31

I read Empress Orchid and loved it. That led me to the other books by this author. This was much lighter in content, but interesting. The characters were vivid and memorable. It was a good book, but not to the standard of Empress Orchard.

3 out of 5 stars Friendship and the Cultural Revolution.......2007-05-19

Anchee Min's WILD GINGER is an intimate look at the friendship between two contrasting young girls growing amidst the drastic changes taking place in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution.

A story of friendship whose chains were destroyed by partisan beliefs, Maple and Wild Ginger wrestle between the principles of Maoism and the natural urges that bind them to the even more painful process of growing up. Disturbing and heartbreaking, the narrative may tend to wallow in predictable sentimentalism. But by the sheer power of the sociopolitical circumstances that test the love of these two girls for each other ... and the young man who came in between them, Anchee Min provides an insight into the China often discussed in history books but with greater pain from the eyes of the youngsters who lived through its most crucial period of cultural evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Min tells a great story.......2007-05-02

All of Anchee Min's stories are delightfully well told. This book is no exception. I fell in love with Wild Ginger.

2 out of 5 stars Sad reality of the cultural revolution.......2006-05-25

Fast, easy page-turner (I read it in one day) that gives interesting insight into what it may have been like growing up during the Cultural Revolution. Although it is insightful and terribly sad at times, it was way too underdeveloped and never reached its full potential. I wish the writer had gone much more in depth with the charachters and their anguish, love, fear, lives, passions and ambitions.

This was the first book I have read by this author and am curious about her other novels, only because of her positive reviews. However, this book wasn't a "must-read" at all- I would recommend it only if you have an interest in Maoist China and the Cultural Revolution, or a few spare hours to read an entire book.

4 out of 5 stars Lives disrupted... sad ... sad .... sad..........2006-04-04

This book makes you think about the millions of young people who had their lives taken away from them. To be hungry and impoverished is horrible enough, but to have your youth, energy and love stolen is another. To grow up in the Cultural Revolution is to have lost all of everything.

Some of the personal narratives of this period, Wild Swan comes to mind, tell of the deprivations and the humiliation, the power of the gang, but omit the experience of coming of age.

Maybe this is all too personal a thing to have had stolen for a memoir, or maybe the experience was totally stolen, and maybe the these stories will come to us only in fiction.

Wild Ginger never had a chance for life. She channeled her discipline, did not allow herself to feel and out Mao-ed the Maoists. Everyone who ever cared about her suffered for her few moments of self esteem.

The Cultural Revolution was a low grade civil war, where the angriest manipulators were given license to act out... and act out they did. This novel tells of the damage to people who lost such large pieces of their lives that they can never rebuild them.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise!.......2006-10-19

This is the first novel of Patricia Potter's novels that I've read, although I have browsed the covers of a few, but deemed them too far on the 'romance' scale for my liking.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. The suspense angle is really good, the story well told and interesting. I would definitely class this novel up with Tess Gerritsen, Lisa Garder, Lisa Jackson etc, and I'm hoping she'll concentrate more in the thriller/suspense/mystery genre in the future. It will certainly encourage me to take a further look at her other titles.

5 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense.......2005-11-27

This was my first book by this author, and it won't be my last.

Fast-paced and exciting, it's hard to put down until you reach the end. Great work!

4 out of 5 stars Nail biting suspense!!.......2005-10-26

New Orleans socialite Holly Ames flees her home after killing the hit man sent to silence her with her toddler in tow. She reinvents herself as artist Liz Baker in a small southwestern town, trying to evade the husband and father who would betray her, and catches the eye of the local sheriff.

Across town, Meredith Rawson receives a deathbed request from her dying mother to find the child she was forced to give up. Her father asks her to drop the subject for her own good, then an attempt is made on Meredith's life, and soon she is plunged into the dark underbelly of politics and police corruption as she searches for her long-lost half sister with the aid of police detective Gage Gaynor.

Soon, Holly's quiet existence is turned upside down as the good guys and bad guys converge to either rescue or silence her. There is plenty of nail biting suspense to keep you caught up in the plot until the very last page. Potter does a great job mixing romance with suspense and avoids the clunky dialogue to prevalent in romantic suspense and keeping the reader hooked for the outcome.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, how I loved this book!.......2004-08-15

This is, without a doubt, one of the the best romantic suspense novels I've read in a long time. The story grabs you at the beginning and takes you along for a wonderful page turning ride. I simply couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. It's suspenseful, romantic, and heartwarming with a good dose of retribution. I loved it.

This is the first time I've read a Patricia Potter novel and definitely won't be my last. She gets added to my favorite authors list.

Once again...a lovely story that will keep you turning the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2004-07-17

This was my first book by Potter and it is a great one. I rushed to buy her others, they were not nearly as good.

So to those of you that have read her before - be sure to buy this one. It will exceed your expectations.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A820533. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Technological advances have brought Flywheel Energy Storage (FES) systems to the point where they can be used in satellites as replacements for chemical batteries. Flywheels have characteristics that may overcome limitations inherent in batteries. These characteristics include high specific energy, minimal degradation over time, and precise knowledge of charge level. A further advantage of flywheels is that, in a combined system, they can be used to replace traditional attitude control hardware. These Integrated Power and Attitude Control Systems (IPACS) show the potential to have less mass than the systems they replace. The question this study seeks to answer is, "In what circumstances should FES be used on-board satellites and, if so, how?" The utility of power and attitude control systems using FES or IPACS was compared to baseline satellite designs using traditional battery energy storage. The results of this study show that IPACS is generally superior to current technology batteries. IPACS is most effective in satellite applications with many charge/ discharge cycles. In the case of geosyncronous Earth orbit missions batteries proved to be marginally superior in a few cases. But for low Earth orbit missions IPACS was shown to be markedly superior.

The Storming Media report number is A893133. The authors trace the problems inherent in coming to terms with Russia's new status and the difficulties encountered in establishing new relationships. They believe that Russia's size, natural resources, populace, and strategic location between Europe and Asia almost certainly guarantee that it will reemerge as a major power. The authors conclude that the West, and in particular the United States, should do all that it can to assist Russia to join the community of nations as a responsible member.

What happens when first contact goes horribly wrong? When that initial meeting between two sentient species leads to utter confusion and misunderstanding, murder and hijacking, and a tight-lipped coverup for years afterward? Jack McDevitt sets this situation up in Infinity Beach, describing humanity at the end of the third millennium as a solitary race, seemingly alone in the cosmos even after colonizing many worlds beyond Earth: "The universe has come to resemble a magnificent but sterile wilderness, an ocean which boasts no friendly coast, no sails, no sign that any have passed this way before." But a ship in search of life returned years earlier under suspicious circumstances, with two crew members missing, one presumed dead in an unexplained explosion, and the fourth retired into silence. Tales of apparitions, strange lights, and voices near the explosion site persist. No one's talking, but the scientist sister (and clone) of one of the missing shipmates starts asking questions and finds herself at the heart of a complex and frightening puzzle.

McDevitt, an accomplished storyteller and perennial Nebula runner-up, proves to have an excellent ear for such drama, telling a solid story that exudes mood and atmosphere while still staying tense enough to keep those pages turning. By turns a murder mystery, ghost story, and solid sci-fi thriller, Infinity Beach takes one of the genre's more prosaic schticks--first contact--and gives it a twist with style and skill: when you do make contact, what you find might scare you. --Paul Hughes

                    Book Description

We are alone. That is the verdict, after centuries of Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence missions and space exploration. The only living things in the Universe are found on the Nine Worlds settled from Earth, and the starships that knit them together. Or so it's believed, until Dr. Kimberly Brandywine sets out to find what happened to her clone-sister Emily, who, after the final, unsuccessful manned SETI expedition, disappeared along with the rest of her ship's crew.

Following a few ominous clues, Kim discovers the ship's log was faked. Something happened out there in the darkness between the stars, and she's prepared to go to any length to find answers. Even if it means giving up her career...stealing a starship...losing her lover. Kim is about to discover the truth about her sister -- and about more than she ever dared imagine.

This is a SETI novel, but on an expanded scale. There is a mystery as well, in finding out what exactly happened to a mission that went out looking, and failed, so none have been sent since.

Also, humanity is doing some serious advertising of their presence. They blow up stars so people might notice where they are.

When people that survived the failed mission start dying, one violently, you realise something is being hidden.

2 out of 5 stars A fantastic premise gets buried.......2007-04-28

The fascinating premise of INFINITY BEACH gets lost in too many pages of irrelevant activities and ponderous, repetitive conversations and reflections. By "irrelevant activities," I mean ones such as lunches and errands that neither advance the plot nor develop the characters. What a pity, because if this were a lean, fast paced novel, it would rank very highly.

Do publishers sometimes push the writers to pad their novels to make the books feel heavy and therefore "worth the money"? This particular novel has at least 150 completely unnecessary pages, perhaps as many as 200! But Mr. McDevitt is not alone; this seems to be happening throughout the genre. DARWIN'S RADIO is another example that comes to mind.

Compare INFINITY BEACH to a novel such as FALLING FREE, by L.M. Bujold. (Ok, maybe unfair, because that is the kind of novel that comes around only once a decade or so.) Ms. Bujold is able to build a very realistic habitat, develop solid, memorable characters, and tell a complete story in 320 pages. More pages don't make for better world-building, and going over and over the same ideas doesn't make them more profound. Nor does adding one or two more characters nearly every chapter right up until the end result in a satisfying complexity.

Another example of getting it done without padding would be CAMOUFLAGE, a relatively lean book with a much weaker premise. Despite its flaws, CAMOUFLAGE sails along, giving us a fun read and a bang for our bucks. (Again, I'm comparing to a Nebula winner, so this might also be unfair.)

I admire Mr. McDevitt's imagination and writing skills. But I don't understand how he could type so many extraneous passages that he buries his plot and characters. Why didn't his editor call him on this?

No, I'm not saying a thick book can't be great. DUNE is great. THE MOTE IN GOD'S EYE is great. A FIRE UPON THE DEEP is great. Add many more to this list.

But what do I know? The fat books sell--just ask Stephen King! I'm just a reader asking questions. I hope I didn't come off sounding like an arrogant, cranky critic.

                    1 out of 5 stars Infinity Blech.......2005-11-01

Briefly, I could not get through 30% of this book; the characters were pasteboard, the settings were bland (terraformed worlds tend to be like that), and the pace dragged (as far as I read)..

..I peeked ahead and was dismayed that the main character was still stumbling over the same plots devices and still mumbling the same drek about longing for her long-disappeared sister. Jeez, that got old quick!

How could a former Navy officer write a science-fiction chick-flick-book? Must have been really boring checking customs IDs in North Dakota.

So I thought I would advise anyone potentially considering..but my hands are getting heavy..must warn readers..can't keep typing..eyelids lowering..head..sinking..ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

                    4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-09-10

I thought this was a great book, and definatly one to add to your SF collection. The science and the story is believable, and the mystery is gripping.

However, I am not a fan of mystery novels so I found the book slowing down during the middle portions. It started of well, with "The Big Picture" in mind, and then degenerated (in my view) to just another mystery novel. I was about to give up, but toward the end it started picking up, and by the end I was very happy that I had stuck with it.

I think it was definatly well written, and the characters were believable for the most part. Some of the actions of the crew of Hunter are a little bit hard to understand (especially coming from people who wanted nothing more than First Contact) but not beyond the realm of possibility. All the other characters are VERY plausible and very intresting.

Unlike most 'Hard' SF novels, this does have very good character development and I was happy to actually 'care' about the protagonist by the end of the novel. The alien culture (what little is presented) is realistic and within the realm of science (not green men with a glued on forehead).

Definatly enjoyable. This was my first novel by McDevitt and I am looking forward to reading more of his books.

                    2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2005-03-25

I bought this after reading Ancient Shores, which had the same problem as this book- ie, an inability to keep up the pace. At least, with Ancient Shores, the let-down only came at the very end. However, the only part of Infinity Beach which managed to be engaging was the middle. The story started off slow, built up suspense enjoyably for a while, but then ultimately crashed in the last several dozen pages, which were limp, completely discarding the interesting potential gained earlier. It's as if Jack McDevitt, having created a concept that could've been truly fascinating, suddenly lost inspiration halfway through and, instead of giving up, mucked around dully for a while before tying the whole thing up with a bland finish.

Also, the main character's name is 'Brandywine', which annoyed me. I'm sure there are people with this name, but in the novel, it sounded like McDevitt had named her 'Kim Unicornprincess'.

This book is a great resource for the Bible scholar, or just someone interested in studying the Old Testament.

The book is filled with charts and graphs that help to put the timeline and other events and prophecies of the Old Testament in perspective.

                                  A very helpful tool!

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Tool for teaching or studying the Bible.......2006-09-09

I first purchased this chart book back in my college days (several years ago). Loved it then, and even more so now. Thank you Lord for tools like this. I've used it many times in bible study (either personal study or facilitating classes). You just can't beat the charts, brief explainations, clear format. The New Testament companion is great, as well as the Church History version, Theology version and Philosophy version. Definitely essentials in every person's library. And if not for you, get it for your kids. They really need to see things visually to understand anything anyway!

Were all biased anyway. The question is which bias is the best bias. Catholics or anyone who "may not benefit as much" from this tool should wonder why not? I don't think God wrote a book hard to be understood. If you are a Catholic, Charismatic, or of the "Orthodox" persuasion, and you cannot "benifit as much" from this chart due to "bias", then perhaps you need to explore the differences between what makes a Christian different from a Catholic. These are not merely terms. A "Christian" is not an umbrella that encompasses a vast majority of mainline denominations or cults or movements or sects, as many people would have others to believe. God in His word tells us who are His. It would be best for folks to check it out. (Jn.1:12; 3:16; Eph.2:8 etc.)----anyway. As the Charts are a great series I personally own three of the set or series, and they are outstanding.

3 out of 5 stars Another good example of useful charts.......2001-04-25

This book of charts is part of a series covering the Old Testament, the New Testament, Church History, Christian Doctrine, Philosophy, etc.

Of the several that I have, I would rate this as not quite as good as its New TEstament counterpart.

There are easily just as many points of difference in doctrine and theology in the Old Testament as in the New; and there is no consensus in the Christian Church on the actual contents of the Old Testament Canon. As such, the obvious Protestant bias limits the ultimate value of this book for Catholic or Orthodox.

Nevertheless, this would still be a good book for the "informed layman" or for a church library.

But it is not without its flaws, and that needs to be realized in advance by clergy of differing backgrounds.
