Book Description

In 1940s Los Angeles, an unidentified murder victim is found bisected in a shadowy lot. A catchy nickname is given her in jest—“The Virgin Tramp”—and suddenly a “nice little homicide that would have drifted off the front pages in a couple of days” becomes a storm center.

Two brothers, Tom and Des Spellacy, are at the heart of this powerful novel of Irish-Catholic life in Southern California just after World War II. Played in the film version by Robert Duvall and Robert De Niro respectively, Tom is a homicide detective and Des is a priest on the rise within the Church. The murder investigation provides the background against which are played the ever changing loyalties of the two brothers. Theirs is a world of favors and fixes, power and promises, inhabited by priests and pimps, cops and contractors, boxers and jockeys and lesbian fight promoters and lawyers who know how to put the fix in.

A fast-paced and often hilarious classic of contemporary fiction, True Confessions is about a crime that has no solutions, only victims. More important, it is about the complex relationship between Tom and Des Spellacy, each tainted with the guilt and hostility that separate brothers.

4 out of 5 stars More a character study than a mystery.......2007-05-31

I have never seen "True Confessions" the movie, and I never had really thought about Mr. Dunne until reading Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" about his decline and death. He seemed like perhaps the more interesting of the two, and worth a trial.

At first I thought, uh-oh, another book with an Irish-Catholic family with a cop and a priest as brothers. And, my, the language is certainly not for someone easily offended by vulgarity. As an example, the n-word and many other ethnic and racial terms appear frequently. You can get away with that in a book set in the post-war 1940s, I guess.

After putting those aside, I really warmed to the story. Mr. Dunne wrote so clearly and with deceptive descriptive power. The murder mystery part of the plot hardly matters to the novel's drive, as the focus is more on the brothers and their relationship to their respective worlds, and secondarily to each other.

Tom is more of a regular cop, sometimes effective and sometimes not, hampered by a frankness, cynicism, and unwillingness to play the games, such that his career and personal life are nothing much. Des is a rising star or near-star in the church, using some of those same skills that his brother as, only with much more effectiveness and attention to his superiors. His true talent is as a "getting things done" guy, on path to be a bishop, and not for his holiness. One can't help but wonder what he's really doing as a priest.

Mr. Dunne does not paint a respectful picture of the LAPD, but that's nothing new for crime or detective stories set in LA. Many authors are doing the same theme today, 30 years later, and not necessarily with any better writing. What is more disturbing for potential readers is the image of the Catholic Church, concentrating more on fund raising, building projects, and its own prideful objectives than in the holiness of its leaders and members. Des's "getting things done" skills are often applied to making deals and dispensing favors in return for "donations" or other benefits.

And don't forget to look the other way when it's inconvenient not to. Ultimately, the deal making leads to the downfall of Des through guilt by association, if not worse. The story is not one of redemption, because it's not clear that the main characters ever really regret what happens or some of their major decisions. This seems to be just the way it is and you may get it in the end or you may not. I'm not sure there is a truly appealing character in the entire cast. Is that Mr. Dunne's view of human nature or merely a particular theme in this novel?

4 out of 5 stars Not Really a Mystery Novel.......2006-05-14

True Confessions is so well written that you may not realize that the apparent lack of style IS the style. No flowery prose, not a wasted word. Expert craftsmanship.

Other reviewers have described the book as a mystery story. No such thing. The mystery is a MacGuffin, and the plot itself is just a device to, first, gradually reveal to us the characters, and, then, subject each of them to self-revelation and growth.

Although there is much irony and many clever bon mots in the story, its overall tone is bleak. I give it only four stars because its lack of sunlight mars our acceptance of it as reality. The film, on the other hand - an excellent adaptation - contains perhaps too much sunlight.

Summary: a great read, but don't hang your interest on its being a detective story.

5 out of 5 stars I'm addicted!.......2005-04-16

I initially purchased this book in 1980, and have read and re-read it at least once a year, ever since! The cynicism Dunne uses to capture the emotions of the two main characters. The Spellacy brothers, Des, the Priest, and Tom, the cop, not only establish their parts in the murder of the "Virgin Tramp," but also come to grips with their own Irish Catholic life journeys. This one is a "must read" for both mystery lovers and those who enjoy a smile when they read!

5 out of 5 stars How Did He Do It? The Perfect Noir Mystery Novel.......2004-09-04

I love this book. I have read it many times and still continue to read it. Why?

I love the protagonist, a cynical, hard-boiled Irish cop who picks up on every defect of everyone he meets and offers up a wisecrack that makes you laugh out loud. If he can substitute a street word for any noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, or conjunction, he does--but in such a precise context and rhythm that it makes sheer poetry.

This book is not for the squeamish--he uses four-letter words, racial slurs, racial epithets. He includes people of his own Irish-Catholic background. As a matter of fact, they are often the focus of his caustic observations. I love every minute of it. I eat it up. Like I said, it's sheer, stimulating poetry--it's like a whiff of salt breeze or the sting of salt water on an open wound; it's like a very dry martini.

Then there's the fact that Dunne has created a noir novel that is exactly like film noir. It envelops you like an L.A. fog and never really dissolves. L.A. in the 1940s was the perfect setting for noir--as Roman Polanski proved in his great film CHINATOWN. Like all great writing, Dunne produces this aura as if by magic.

So if you've ever ridden in a squad car, dressed in a silent-movie vamp costume, on a Halloween night in the city, because you've lost your way and the cops are trying to keep you out of harm's way, but they can't resist turning the red light on and blowing the siren, and taking you along on a few calls on the way home just to show off; if you've ever hitchhiked on the Jersey Turnpike and been picked up by a cop, and ended up havin g a conversation about all the important things until day breaks and he brings you to a truck stop; if you have a soft spot for cops; if you don't mind bad language; if you like mysteries; if you have a sense of humor; if you love noir, you might give this book a try. I think it is a masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars A Let Down.......2004-07-29

This novel is set in the 40's, when Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) was found murdered, her body cut in two. The characters revolve around the investigation of this incident, altnough her name is changed. The chapters go back and forth between the views of two brothers: one, an amoral cop, the other, a Catholic priest, Monsignor, businessman, whatever you want to call him. Neither one is likable, the 40's cop jargon is incomprehensible, and the Catholic politics/building programs are boring. However, the murder is solved and the end is neatly tied up with a bow.

If old cop stories appeal to you, you might like this, but I'm sure you could find better. Double Indemnity, for instance, is superior.

    3 out of 5 stars "You're a citizen of Nowhere...".......2003-05-19

Our favorite citizen-of-nowhere is none other than the aptly- named Grace Peacock, a literary type with an intuitive kind of intelligence that renders her unfit for much of normal society. Actually, nowhere in the story does our author, Mary Bringle, state this fact: one must discern this (unfortunate?) trait of Grace's through acquaintance's comments or via the behavior of conventional types like her mother or cousin Fiona.

Grace leads an interesting vagabondish type of existence. She exists on a dwindling trust fund and from teaching "creative writing" to what her employer dubs "fringe people." Despite her preoccupation with her self (which the conventional types deride her for), Grace never lacks for compassion for others; in fact, she hurts and winces for the gullibility and futility she observes in others.

A plethora of interesting characters people this novel, ranging from ex-lovers, friends or her writing students. By the same token, we meet up with a similar number of conventional types whom the author portrays with gentle humor and even a twinge of sadness/regret.

Humor is a consistent factor thru True Confessions. Mary Bringle writes flawless, elegant & sophisticated prose with a knack for the absurd and inane. Grace's eccentric addiction to "confessional magazines" is delightfully shown us thru clever use of story titles set in small capped type, like "THE SPIRIT VOICE REVEALED: YOUR HUSBAND HAS 3 WIVES!!" Snippets of these stories appear regularly thru the story and without having to say it, readers discern the underlying banality of all-things-Harlequin. Only later in the story, as Grace's life takes some twists & turns--ultimately to propel her toward revelation--do we realize how Grace Peacock is unable to relinquish her beloved addiction/habit to these confessionals without real effort (and reason).

Some unexpected social commentary occasionally pops up in the book. In this modern age of cynicism and moral relativism, Grace notices with displeasure and dismay, how the tone of confessional stories have changed. No longer are her heroines dismayed with their own lusts & betrayals; "now characters smirk & belitte their sins in an age now where everybody has to feel good."

A few things obscure the point in this delightful, cerebral romp. The character of sociologist Samuel, while devastatingly accurate in portraying a shallow misogynist who receives a grant to examine societal "anomie," fails to move the story (or Grace's plight) forward at all. Ditto for the kidnapping scene with ex-hubby Edward & Co later on; its too farcical and irrelevant for this story. And while we all may yearn for reconciliation with loved ones who are different from ourselves, Grace's sudden decision to rehook up with her conventional family types comes too quickly. Its just too pat of a conclusion for our originally-complex heroine, Grace Peacock.

Superfluous, irrelevant characters pop up here & there. The character of Mr. Ottway, while certainly a humorous foil to her bumbling, inane writing students, later plays a farfetched, silly role. Bringle fails to flesh out some of the minor characters like Jenny, and while Grace's relationship with Maurice could truly be significaznt, the brevity of it (one conversation!) makes her reaction to his fate extremely unlikely in real life.

Bringle is at her best in revealing "types" and their cliched manner of existing. Check out her depiction of Samuel's panel TV forum on anomie, where a variety of academic types pompously congregate to discuss urban issues.

Overall, True Confessions is a satisfying romp with a fun heroine. As Devereaux, one of Grace's lovers, comments, "Geez, all the women in New York and I have to pick you for a girlfriend!" Why, precisely! Grace Peacock rules!!

What more can I say about the writings of Nicholas Sparks. This book has a twist towards the end that no one would see coming! Once again a "can't put this book down" novel!

      5 out of 5 stars A Love Escape.......2007-04-05

Set against beautiful landscape, this love story is a bit over the top, but it can make a welcome escape from everyday life.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected........2007-03-10

I'm a huge fan of Nicholas Sparks and I've read just about all of his books. I have to say I was definitely not impressed with this one. It was somewhat short and unrealistic. Although Sparks usually writes about love stories that are just too good to be true, this one definitely takes the cheese over the top. It's still a good story, but I think he could have gone much more into it and created a better plot.

3 out of 5 stars Nights in Rodanthe.......2007-02-21

I read this book in one night. If you love Nicholas Sparks do not miss this one. For me it is one of his better novels.

I was born and raised in Pamlico/Craven/Carteret area so these books are always a wonderful walk down memory lane for me but i have to admit.... the plots are starting to blur. But .... I continue to read them for that rich landscape and drama of Carolina weather!! and the walks on the beach!!!

Don't take brilliant, shrewd Dairine Callahan for just any bratty younger sibling. Impatient for adventure, knowledge, and recognition, she finds her sister Nita's wizardry manual and reads the Oath aloud. Disappointingly, nothing happens. But when her family's new computer arrives, Dairene discovers more than the standard issue system software on it and launches herself on a reckless, universe-wide, high-voltage magical conflict with the Lone Power. Diane Duane's storytelling is skillfully mythic and wittily referential; Dairine's discovery and shaping of a new form of life is wondrous. For maximum enjoyment, read So You Want To Be A Wizard and Deep Wizardry first.

                        Book Description

Young wizards Nita and Kit face their most terrifying challenge yet: Nita's little sister, Dairine. Not only is Dairine far too smart for a ten-year-old, she also has recenlty become a wizard, and worse yet, a wizard with almost limitless power. When Dairine's computerized wizard's manual glibly sends her off on her novice adventure--her Ordeal--Kit and Nita end up chasing her across the galaxy, trying to catch up with Dairine before she gets into trouble so deep that not even her brains can resuce her.

Once I finished "Deep Wizardry", I was desperate to know what would happen with Dairine, Nita's little sister and Diane Duane didn't disappoint!

1 out of 5 stars Older reader disappointed.......2007-08-14

I am an older reader who enjoyed the Harry Potter books and I thought this series might be fun to read. I was very disappointed.

On page 102 the author states, in third person narrative, that 1) the earth spins at 17,000 mph, 2) the earth travels in its orbital path at 175,000 mph and 3) that the sun travels at 115,000 mph. These are all grossly incorrect. 1) should be 1040 mph. 2) should be 67,000 mph, and 3) is 490,000 mph.

Some may consider this unimportant. But why should readers be exposed to 'facts' that seem to be just made up. Scientific facts are not trivia. On page 145 the author uses light-years as a unit of time. This is the mark of a true ignoramus.

Everything else about this book is at this level. The plot, the descriptions, the action sequences would barely get a C- in freshman English. How did this get in print?

this series is reall good and great fun, rather on the lines of harry potter...I highly recomend, NOT just for kids.

4 out of 5 stars Young Wizards Aloft.......2006-09-18

A character who has constantly been in the background of the first two books in this series, "So You Want to Be a Wizard" and "Deep Wizardry," has been Juanita (Nita) Callahan's younger sister Dairine. While Dairine has been a pest, as younger sisters (and brothers) often seem to be, Diane Duane was setting up Dairine for a special role. A role Dairine gets a chance to fill in this book.

We discover early in this book that Dairine is an incredibly power wizard; much more powerful than either Nita or her best friend Christopher (Kit) Rodriguez. Dairine's book of magic comes not in the traditional form of a book, but as a lap top computer, reflecting the improving state-of-the-art of computers in 1990 when Duane wrote this book. Of course any computer owned by a wizard would have to be strange, and Dairine's computer exhibits characteristics that are decidedly different from any computer we mere mortals have experienced.

Dairine's Ordeal matches her incredible power. She is tasked to bring an entire planet to self-realization and advancement to a higher state of consciousness and she takes on the Lone Power with the support of her newly created and found friends. I leave the details to the reader.

This book has a different flavor from the first two books in the series. While the first two books had technology, this book exhibits a stronger science fiction or science fantasy influence. Even with that influence the fate of the Lone Power remains strongly metaphysical and just a touch incongruous with the science fiction nature of the story. The ending of the story relates, as with the previous two books, to the fate of the Lone Power, and thus must be metaphysical, and the ending confuses much of the effort Diane put into developing the science fiction aspect of the story.

Excluding the ending, this book is a captivating read and further develops the characters in the series. While the second book stands acceptably well on its own, I recommend reading at least the first book in the series, "So You Want to Be a Wizard," prior to reading this book. Knowing the principal characters is helpful in coming up to speed with the storyline.

This book is another good entry in this series, but with a different flavor. A solid four stars.

                        5 out of 5 stars Brother Lightbringer.......2005-12-01

It should come as no surprise that Dairine, Juanita Callahan's sister, was due to become a wizard herself. What no one expected though was that Dairine would peek into Nita's manual and take the Oath herself. Without even reading the small print. Suddenly an 11-year-old human is one of the most powerful wizards in the universe, and the powers that be have some surprising plans for her. In short order she turns her brand new computer into the perfect spell assistant and heads off. First, a trial spin to Mars, and then whoosh! - She's off to her own ordeal.

Dairine quickly discovers that she is being chased by the powers of darkness. In a mad run, she covers billions of light years until she finally comes to rest in what appears to be a dead planet composed of layer after layer of silicon. But appearances can be deceiving and Dairine discovers that the planet has become a giant computer chip, hovering on the edge of sentience. The young wizard and her trusty Apple III are the catalyst. Since Dairine is teaching the planet first to think, and then to create. Soon she is surrounded by silicon creatures, creatures to whom she has given the gift of magic, without considering the consequences.

To each culture comes the lone power, the one that created death. And to each he offers a choice to accept his gift or choose otherwise. Never before has it been rejected right from the start, and it has no intention of this being the first time. A great argument is begun. But nothing is certain, especially around Dairine, and she and the Lone Power are quickly locked in a battle of logic and heart. And coming up behind as fast as they can are Kit and Nita. Three wizards facing a battle that could determine the future of the universe - and kill them just as easily.

While none of Duane's Wizardry series are slow reading, High Wizardry goes by in a great flash, with a memorable ending. The book has much to say about behaving responsibly and accepting help, but it never preaches. Dairine may be a hero, but she still has much to learn, and that's the lesson she takes home with her. And Nita comes face to face with her own resentments towards a sister who is both younger than her and a better wizard. The book has a lesson for everyone it seems, even the Lone Power.

"Never think We were made to be less than equals in the One. Someday you will surpass Us, and still be our equals, and both you and We will rejoice at it."

A friend loaned me this book at just the time I needed to hear what it shared.. and it is an incredible book, which I have subsequently bought for various friends.. On the content of the book alone, I would rate this an unequivocal 5 stars. It is powerful, and it's message is an important one for all of us to hear.. The exercises at the back are brilliant..

I recently learned, however, that John Powell has admitted to sexual abuse perpetrated against a number of young girls/young women under his care.. I am shocked, saddened and sickened by what I have learned, and it has tainted my perception of his books.

This priest admitted to child sexual abuse. Please realize that he is a liar. What he has written sounds so good, but you cannot trust the words he has written. It is so sad that he used his gift to lure children into his awful life.

I read this book at a time when I felt my relationship was falling apart. Powell's wise insights into the value of communication, honesty, and talking things over when every ounce of your being - save one - says to give up gave me the strength to re-examine my thoughts and feelings. I took the advise he gave and now, six months later, feel changed for the better. My relationship is thriving, and my understanding and (most importantly) appreciation and love of my boyfriend is much greater. I would recommend this book to anyone!

After telling us that "loving yourself" is the key to happiness, the author then tells us that "we can not make it alone......I need to see my worth and beauty reflected in your eyes." p.24. This puts people right back where they were, addicted to others. Sure, human beings fundamentally need other people, but only after becoming secure without them.

This book is awesome and should be required reading for everyone. Yes, it's written by a priest, but the 'religious' references are minimal and don't in any way detract from the message of the book - unless you choose to let them do so. I've given many to friends and will continue to do so ... very powerful message, yet easy to read, understand and apply the principles. An immeasurable gift to give to yourself or to others.

It's so easy to understand and very straightforward. Anyone and everyone can relate! The best part of it is that it is an affirmation of the true meaning of marriage: commitment through "better or worse".
