Soon her two eldest daughters are called back to serve the People's Republic. Her oldest daughter, Grace, now a doctor, finds meaning through her work. Things are not as easy for her daughter Mercy, a musician who is not in demand in the People's Republic, nor for her new husband who she has brought back to China with her.
Watching her two daughters grow apart and knowing that her youngest daughter will never return, Madame Liang must also face the challenges The Cultural Revolution, and how to keep herself and the restaurant, alive.

I really enjoyed this book as Ms. Buck was able to take the reader inside a family caught in a changing world during the Chinese revolution and show how the characters each acted and reacted according to the information they had and what they believed or wanted to believe about that information. Madam Liang, who is coming to terms with disillusionment about the revolution and her past part in it, and her daughters, who had been sent to America for education and protection and their return to China with patriotic and idealistic expectations, are classic generational viewpoint studies. The shocking ending to the story was unexpected and expected all at once. The basic story is still relevant today.

"The Three Daughters of Madame Liang" was Pearl S. Buck's last major novel and it holds its own with the best of her work. In Madame Liang, Buck has created a fascinating character, a woman who is very much her own person. After doing the very un-Chinese thing of leaving her husband when he takes a concubine, which he claims is his right because his wife has produced no son, Madame Liang determines to make her own way in the world and opens a gourmet restaurant that caters to the high and mighty of the People's Republic (even good Communists appreciate good food). She has not only survived, but thrived, by keeping a low profile and providing her customers with the best. But she has sent her three daughters, Grace, Mercy and Joy, to America to be educated; and now, after many years separation, Grace has been called home by her government to serve the new society.
Madame Liang has her own opinions about the new society which she has prudently kept to herself. But Grace, back home in China, throws herself into her work as a doctor and embraces everything blindly, including a young physician named Liu Pang, who parrots everything he has read in Mao's Little Red Book. Mercy, the second sister, is a musician, whose talents are not in demand in the People's Republic; but she misses her home and induces her new husband, a rocket scientist, to return to their country. For Grace, the return home is the fulfillment of herself; for Mercy and her husband, it is a disaster. Meanwhile, the third sister, Joy, a painter, having found romance and happiness with a fellow artist who has left China for good and never intends to return, remains in America to make her life with him.
Madame Liang watches the growing tension and hostility dividing the two older sisters with alarm and resignation. She can't live her daughters' lives for them; all she can do is keep on living her own life. But her own life can't survive the insanity of the Cultural Revolution; the very success of her restaurant means she's an enemy of the working classes. The Cultural Revolution sweeps everything away in its path; including Madame Liang.
Buck writes with a flow that keeps her book moving effortlessly along like an unbroken skein of thread (one gets thoroughly caught up in the narrative before realizing that there are no chapters; the book moves from one scene to the next till the final page), covering some six or seven years from the end of the 50's to 1966. Through it all, Madame Liang's continually expressed faith in her country and people suggest that, whatever her own fate, China and its people will survive in spite of themselves. Although the book is ostensibly about her three daughters, it's really the story of a remarkable woman, and through her, the story of China in transition.
Nice intro to the Chinese perspective of the New Government.......2003-05-17
I thought this novel was a wonderful introduction to the mindset of the Chinese people, both those living in China, and those living in America, towards the new government. It was an enlightening story because as an American, we view it simply as a government as one that took away everyone's freedoms, which it did. Yet, of course, it's not that simple. The story is about that deeply-rooted devotion to one's mother country, no matter what changes it goes through. It also reveals what led to the change of government, and what problems arised and what new changes occurred afterward. Through Madame Liang, representing the older revolutionary generation, the story showed how the revolution failed, and she saw how certain mistakes in history were made. Through her daughters, it showed the hope in which the younger generation had for the new China, and their attempts to restore a strong nation within the new framework. Also revealed was the the repression of emotions, through Grace, the eldest daughter, her hopeless lusting after Liu Peng, yet knowing that his mind was narrow and brainwashed in the Communist school of thought. Of course, the repression of individual thought was evident with John Sung, the scientist who refused to create weapons to be used against Americans. The stories surrounding Mercy and Joy, Madame Liang's two other daughters, was interesting in that they both struggled with their loyalties to China, but love, in Joy's case, kept her in America, while experience in the new China, forced Mercy to escape. There were a lot of interesting themes throughout the story, the theme of love in light of this new way of life, the theme of pride in one's own race and country. The style in which the story was told was very different from that of "The Good Earth." Here it was a much more fast-moving narrative, and a great modern story.
I couldn't put this book down, but there's just one thing that bothered me, and that was the ending, which seemed so abrupt. All of a sudden certain events happened which bluntly put the entire story to an end. Certainly these events were convincing, yet it still left me completely shocked and almost disappointed once the novel was finished. That's the only reason why I gave it four stars.
A Moving, Deeply Personal Account of the Cultural Revolution.......2001-08-25
I have read more than a dozen novels by the extraordinary Pearl S. Buck, and this is one of my all time favorites. Buck's lucid writing, and deep understanding of complex cultural issues makes this a gem. Set against the back-drop of the Chinese cultural Revolution, THE THREE DAUGHTERS OF MADAME LIANG charts the deeply personal journey and loss of one Chinese family. There is a sophistication to Buck's writing that is not always immediately apparent, but once you become used to her voice, the deceptively simple prose gives way to deeply moving insights. This is a glowing, powerful novel about a family and a country at a crossroads. Don't miss it!
Riveting Story; Cold War Patriotism.......2001-01-15
Pearl Buck did a masterful job of exploring the consequences of the Chinese communist revolution. Each of Madame Liang's daughters, Grace, Mercy, and Joy, come to terms with it in their own way. The essence of the book, however, is the realization that, whether a person is attracted to communism or repelled by it, his actions are usually dictated by his own personal interest. In that sense, the book is a satiric ridicule of the communist ideal.

I really like her books. I especially like the way she makes you love the "place" where the action is happening. I really liked Kara, her older brother & family and Stonebrook Cottage. I could see it so clearly even though I have never been there. I also love birds!

This is the first book by Carla Neggers I have read. While I suspected one person as the killer, I was wrong - but not too far off base. The characterizations were good, the story flowed well, and the concept was very believeable. I just ordered four more of her recent books.

STONEBROOK COTTAGE reminds me of why I'm a Carla Neggers fan. I loved the characters, found the mystery intriguing and the resolution totally satisfying. I agree -- it's an excellent summer read.

This is the first book by Carla Neggers that I have read.
I am now trying to find all her previous books as I really enjoyed this one! I highly recommend it as a Very Good Romantic Suspense!!
Good mystery in New England/Texas series.......2002-08-14
This again is a continuation of her New England/Texas series and as always has the secretive leading lady(s) and the strong, pushy male. It was a good mystery but you figure early on whodunit but so what... We wanted to see it heat up. Unfortunately, I wish she would have dealt more with Kara and Sam and less of everyone else. Ms. Neggers tends to bring in more & more characters when all I really want to do it hear about all the old ones. Still, I highly recommend it and would keep it along with my favorite "Finding You".

This book is very indepth and detailed as well as informed about the religions it talks about. It is a very good source for learning about rituals, traditions, and cultures that surround and encompass world religions.
Mischaracterizations.......2000-12-12
Good apologetics requires accuracy. Otherwise, the Christian reader addresses the wrong things, and will have no hearing. This book does not help Christians to properly understand the religions covered. The chapter on Baha'i is an example - it is not only inaccurate, it is in parts a caricature of Baha'i history and teachings. The Bab's title was not a claim to be a representative of the Mahdi, although many initially interpreted it that way. The Bab's proclamation to his first disciple was as the Gate of God (that is, a Divine Messenger). Corduan mischaracterizes Azal as the "prophet" the Bab promised, but Azal was appointed only as a leader of the Babi community until such time as the promised prophet appeared. Baha'u'llah was that promised one. Virtually the entire Babi community followed Baha'u'llah. The so-called "struggle for succession" is simply not what Corduan makes of it. The author's arguments about this "struggle," as well as the opposition to 'Abdu'l-Baha, could be turned around and pointed at Christianity as well if one wanted to look at the rebellion of Judas, the denial of Jesus by Peter, or the struggle between early disciples over the proper requirements for church membership. One must review the motives and spiritual outcomes to note whether the good tree brought forth good fruit.
'Abdu'l-Baha did not proclaim himself the authorized interpreter of Baha'i scripture. Baha'u'llah designated 'Abdu'l- Baha such in clear language in his will and in his Most Holy Book. The author's insinuation of usurpation is insulting to Baha'is. The author makes the same mistake when he states that Shoghi Effendi "assumed leadership." 'Abdu'l-Baha appointed him Guardian of the Baha'i Faith in his will.
To address 'Abdu'l-Baha as Abdul, and Shoghi Effendi as Shoghi, is not only disrespectful, but shows a woeful ignorance of Islamic names.
The Universal House of Justice is not the "central shrine of Baha'i." The Universal House of Justice is the 9-member council that guides the Baha'i community at the international level.
The Manifestations of God are not called "babs" in the Baha'i Faith. Baha'u'llah mentions more than nine such Messengers in his works. While Baha'u'llah's revelation is the culmination of the prophetic cycle gone before, he states that God's method of sending down revelations will continue. It is not "somewhat paradoxical" (as Corduan writes), nor simply "theoretically possible" that other Messengers of God will appear.
Corduan totally de-emphasizes Baha'i personal spirituality, and states that Baha'is focus on social action. This faith requires of its members daily obligatory prayer, reading of scripture, meditation, an annual fast, personal study, and the teaching of their faith to others. To divorce personal spirituality from social action is, for Baha'is, to betray God's will. Both are necessary.
Corduan criticizes the Baha'is for being inclusive, and then criticizes them for not being all-inclusive. What is included or not included is based upon the teaching of Baha'u'llah. This is the same principle that would apply for a Christian who weighs the world on the basis of the Bible, which is sometimes inclusive and sometimes not.
Corduan should review the references to sin in the Baha'i scriptures (of which there are many) if he wishes to understand its approach to individual salvation. Both individual and social redemption go hand in hand for Baha'is. His dismissal of the Baha'i approach in favor of Christian individual redemption also dismisses a social action tradition in Christianity that is as much based upon biblical principle as the salvation of the individual.
Corduan's use of W. M. Miller's anti-Baha'i polemical work in his bibliography suffices to indicate the author's intent, which is certainly not to provide an accurate picture for Christians so that they can engage in real dialogue. Any reader who follows this book will not communicate successfully with his Baha'i contacts. I do not recommend this book to Christians as an accurate or helpful way to learn about other religions.
Informative, Helpful, and Insightful.......2000-08-27
This is a text book that examines World Religions in light of Christianity. Corduan is detailed in giving the historical setting, background, and current trends of the major world religions. He also describes how Christians can evangelize the various adherents in each of the world religions, what to avoid which might offend, etc. One of the better characteristics of this particular text is the fact that Corduan covers the native American religions as well as the Traditional religions (African). Something most texts do not cover. The other religions covered in the text are Islam, Hinduism, Chinese Popular Religions, Buddhism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Shinto (Japanese religion), Jainism, Sikhism and Baha'i. Moreover, Corduan has a wonderful chapter that deals with the historical development of religion (it's origin), the meaning of religion, and a refutation of the evolutionary approach to religion. Corduan describes the concept of original monotheism and details how this is in direct contradiction to the weak but widely accepted evolutionary approach. Therefore, the book is written from an apologetic perspective but is quite detailed and thorough when dealing with the actual religions. Moreover, Corduan spends time in each chapter with each religion describing how the origins of the religion began with a single "high god." Therefore, eliminating the possibility of an evolutionary view of religion. It is quite interesting how the history of religion exhibits the concept of original monotheism ("the idea that all religions began with God - the Creator and Revealer." p.16) This is a wonderful text for Christians to own if for no other reason than the fact that we live in such a pluralistic world and Christian need to be equipped.
A great first step into world religions.......1998-12-31
Having Dr. Corduan for class, I had to buy his book, yet that didn't keep me from reading ahead and into sections that we didn't even cover. A great book that covers all the major world religions (minus Christianity) and gives Christians an excellent chance to truly be able to relate to others in our cities, states, and country who have differing views from ours.
