Book Description
In the tradition of Prague and White Teeth, This Is Not Civilization is an inspired, sweeping debut novel that hopscotches from Arizona to Central Asia to Istanbul with a well-meaning, if misguided, young Peace Corps volunteer. Jeff Hartig lies at the center of this modern take on the American-abroad tale, which brings together four people from vastly different backgrounds, each struggling with the push and pull of home. A young Apache, Adam Dale, forsakes the reservation for the promise of a world he knows little about. Anarbek Tashtanaliev, of post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan, operates a cheese factory that no longer produces cheese. Nazira, his daughter, strains against the confines of their village's age-old traditions. With captivating insight, realism, and humor, Robert Rosenberg delivers a sensitive story about the cost of trying to do good in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating read for travel to Kyrgyzstan.......2007-06-26
The title of this novel unfortunately created some awkward moments when the tour leader borrowed this book and noted from the first few pages that his mother is from the village where it is set. "An why is it called This is Not Civilization," he asked.
The novel is divided among three different locales. The first one, Kyrgyzstan, is so engaging that I was tempted to skip the next one, set in Arizona, and pick up the thread back in the village. Not possible, given that the characters among the three settings are interwoven and integral to the ending. This was a very good read for travel to Central Asia.
A big disappointment.......2007-06-19
This is Not Civilization starts off on the right foot by setting up the story line, populating it with interesting people, and setting it in an exotic and intriguing locale. And though it chugged along with a good deal of potential, before very long it started to come unraveled, and by the end it was a train wreck of a book.
First, the good news. Rosenberg clearly knows his material, having experienced Kyrgyzstan, the reservation at Red Cliff, and Istanbul. He also writes well. Unfortunately those are the book's only strengths. Frequently it seemed as if the author was simply looking for an excuse to share as many minute details about those places as possible, even when it was not necessary or even appropriate. When done well, this kind of fiction can make the reader feel like he's actually there. In this case it made me feel like I was listening to someone brag about how well traveled he his and how much he knows about other cultures and places.
One of the book's biggest shortcomings is that it is impossible to sympathize with any of the characters, with the possible exception of Nazira. Everyone else is so shallow, selfish, and self-pitying that I found myself completely annoyed with them. Or they simply aren't in the story enough to form an opinion one way or the other. Then there's the fact that the book begins with one protagonist - Jeff - but then ends up with two - Jeff and Adam. In fact, Adam becomes a more central character than Jeff by the end of the story for no apparent good reason.
Numerous events occur in the story that sometimes seem significant when they occur but that ultimately amount to nothing. The same could be said for the entire book. There is really no climax or resolution of any kind. Nothing happens to any of the characters that makes us care more about them or sympathize with them, and even the one major tragedy that occurs (I won't spoil it for you) isn't handled very well by the author and doesn't have the kind of impact it might.
The romance that develops in Istanbul (again, I won't spoil it for you) is utterly implausible and uncompelling. I found it impossible to visualize the two people in question being in love with each other, especially because we're given no good reason to even care about one of them. It was just too forced.
Overall this book was a big disappointment on many levels. It's just not a good story, however good the writing may be.
Rosenberg leaves the reading wanting..........2006-10-03
From the very sentence I was sucked into the book, my attention captured as I prepared for an exhilarting journey into unknown lands and experiences. However, after a few chapters in, I was sorely disappointed and simply finishing the book felt more like a chore than a pleasure.
The attitude of the main character, Jeff, left me feeling confused and disconnected. While there are undoubtedly disappointments in providing social aid abroad, I found the main character to be callous to experiences, dwelling more on the fact that he wasn't changing the world as opposed to finding the good in what he was doing. Overall Jeff comes off as a pessimistic, disconnected human being using distance and social service to run from a trouble past of his own.
The novel does bring up interesting questions and situations, but in the end the characters seem to fall flat and the reader is left wanting.
An aweful read in just about every aspect.......2006-07-09
As a doctoral student in economics and international development and a person with a lot of international experience and living abroad, I think this book could serve as a textbook case of what a foreigner and a development practitioner shouldn't write and do in reference to another culture.
The book is a glimpse into the psychological and intellectual challenges that a government-funded official (e.g. Peace Corps volunteer), faces and how they prevent him to bring about any social change or stir the local community structures in the village that he lives in for two years.
Instead, the author via his book demonstrates brilliantly what the word 'tokenization' of someone else's culture means in the Kyrgyz context. I am not Kyrgyz though I lived and worked in Kyrgyzstan as a development worker and am familiar with the country, its languages and culture. Thus, I am expressing an opinion as an outsider myself. When the author of the book gets to the point of even uttering a judgement in the very title of his book (even if implicitly done via what one of his characters supposedly says), and you feel like you are in for a visit to a cultural zoo or something, you know the book will add little as an intellectual read, even less so as a development story or an insight of how as an outsider you can add value to the process of empowering them.
As a person who embraces the grassroots approach to development and believe that my very work at some points in time facilitated it, I would be personally ashamed to publish a book like this.
cliched; rings true; direct and to the point.......2006-06-19
If you've traveled or lived overseas you will see that the author, a former Peace Corps volunteer, knows what it's like to live overseas.
The book if full of cliches, which have basis in truth (as many lies do), and is direct and to the point. The author's style is straight forward third person narrative, and the story comes across almost like an allegory.
The beef I had was the author is too direct, and instead of indirectly describing something, like Chekov's style, instead goes for it in a brute force manner, not unlike this review.
All in all a good book, not a great book, but if you plan to travel a lot overseas or live there, it's worth a read.

Classic nurse in Holland romance tale by Betty Neels.
Customer Reviews:
Another Wonderful Handsome Dutch Doctor / Plain British Nurse Tale.......2006-11-30
Book Description: Emma Hastings was a splendid theater sister, and the devastatingly handsome Dutch surgeon Justin Teylingen was certainly aware of her talents. During his visit to her hospital, Justin had gained the greatest respect and admiration for Emma, but that wasn't quite the same as feeling love -- and Emma knew it was love that she wanted from Justin. But why would he see her as anything more than an efficient colleague when far prettier girls were his for the asking...?
Emma Hastings is on vacation in Holland with her mother when she hits an expensive car driven by a handsome man... This is another wonderful Handsome Dutch Doctor & Plain British Nurse tale by Neels.
Exactly what the doctor ordered!.......2006-06-26
The only flaw (to me) was that Justin, the imposing, handsome and frustrating Dutch doctor had copper hair and green eyes in this romantic outing. I prefer blond with feathers of gray at the temples and Dutch blue eyes. Otherwise the plain, pleasant, dutiful nurse is found by her Prince Charming and after suitable angst and dinners of lobster cocktails accompanied by a dry sherry, Coq au Vin with a white Bordeaux to accompany it, then a fresh fruit salad laced with Curacao and veiled in whipped cream the romantic dilemma is finally resolved and again we live happily ever after. One of my favorites and I read it often!!!
Sweet Romance.......2006-02-23
Emma Hastings is on vacation in Holland with her mother when she hits a car driven by Dutch Surgeon Justin Teylingen. Not exactly a good start to a relationship and she is not thrilled to learn that he will be performing surgery at the hospital where she works as a nurse. Emma thinks Justin is in love with his cousin, little does she realize that he is in love with her and is willing to wait until she falls in love with him.
This is another wonderful romance from Betty Neels. The plot is one of her most popular - a handsome and rich Dutch doctor falls in love with a plain English nurse who is excellent at her job and comes from a poor but loving family. She also throws in the plot device of having the heroine in danger and the doctor must save her (showing the reader he loves her although the heroine isn't aware of it yet). There is nothing new here, but that's what is so great about her books - you know exactly what you are getting when you read them and they are a great pick me up when you need it.
"Wish With the Candles" is another winner from Betty Neels.

Book Description
Based on the legendary science-fiction series by acclaimed novelist Kevin J. Anderson, THE SAGA OF SEVEN SUNS: VEILED ALLIANCES acts as a revelatory prequel to the Saga novels Hidden Empire and A Forest of Stars. In this fantastical volume, the human race begins its expansion into outer space only to discover that for centuries a multitude of other planets have been interacting on a cosmic scale. Now as Earth attempts to become a player in this new arena, her ambassadors are thrust into a foreign world of alien life forms, backstabbing politics, lustful relationships, bitter feuds, family rivalries, and a deadly quest to become the supreme force in the universe.
Customer Reviews:
Saga of Seven Suns minus Four.......2005-08-14
The artwork was exceptional, but the story line didn't have the same detail that Anderson provides in his novels.
Failed Alliances.......2005-02-20
This is a comic book. Unfortunately I did not discover this until after I had placed my order, for this product but thought "Hey it's still SoSS of it's bound to be good right?"
Wrong. Or rather, it was OK but nothing more than that. The drawings are good, but the story is nowhere to be found. If this work is designed to draw readers into the series, I fear it has failed. Not only does it offer HUGE spoilers but it fails to bring out the most basic intrigues and plots that make the series great. Words cannot express my extreme dissapointment when I read a $12.00 comic book that offered me nothing that I hadn't alreadr read in the novels.
If you like pretty pictures this product is for you.
To the rest of the SoSS fans, skip it. And to you who haven't read SoSS, go pick up a copy of Hidden Empire today!
Interesting, if short.......2004-02-29
While I thought this should have shown more Ildiran kiths (I was really interested in the Singers), this is an interesting prequel, that gives alot of very interesting information. I hope KJA does more.
GREAT!-IF YOU'VE ALREADY READ BOOKS ONE AND TWO.......2004-02-07
As a fan of both comic books and of Kevin J. Anderson , (Star Wars, Dune and now Saga of Seven Suns), this was pure heaven for me. So why did i give it only three stars?
If you have already read the books: You will find that you already know most of the story. Most of it was given as backround informaition in the books it is quite predictible. But still will be understandable, and worth your time, Some of the art is truely incredible.
If You have yet to read the books: I know that this is a prequil, and your probably thinking it's just the thing to get you into the siries. Unfortoneatly it contains NUMEROUS SPOILERS that will seriously increase the perdictsbillity of the books which by the way contains some great plot twists. I would recomend the first book Hidden Empire, ehich starts off slow but really kicks it off the siries well, and will have you ichicng for Horriozon Storms (book three) in no time.
-Even though it has its fualts i think this is a valuable entry into the Saga of Seven Suns universe. As i said befor some of the art is great, and it really fleshes out the beginings of the story well-

Great Read!!.......2006-10-25
Loved the book - very informative with lots of direction to start communicating with the Angelic realm. Loved the step by step instructions as well as the personal stories of students who rec'd messages from the angels. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in this subject.
Pretty darn good!.......2004-07-10
I could see and speak to angels before this book- my fortay. I loved them and still do. Everything happens for a reason. So, one day my best gf's mom was hosting a seminar on this book and invited me- several times. My parents too. I thought arragantly "naw, i can already speak to them, i don't need this class!" than my gaurdian and my other gf's gaurdian Caleb nugded me to read it. So i stopped being a little pest and read it. Very very wonderful. Understandable and opening. After reading this, its eaiser to sometimes speak with them and truly a help in my life even more than before.
Amazing & insightful book!.......2004-03-05
I read this book almost a year ago and just recently took a class with one of the authors, Trudy Griswold. She is an incredible woman and helped me further to be able to talk with and write to my angels. It was one of the most amazing evenings, very emotional and helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone and a class if they can find a facilitator or one of the authors nearby!
Is this spirituality?.......2004-02-09
The idea that there are really angels out there, and one is assigned to take care of us, is an extremely childish idea. All you have to do is look at the devastation around you, the pain and the needless suffering to convince you that it is not so.
One can ask angels anything, we find out in this booklet, from a house to a car, a girlfriend or even a parking spot on a busy day.
This is not materialism, the authors inform us, it is self-empowerment. With this nonsense, modern American spirituality has touched rock bottom. I just hope this is a fad that passes through quickly. Certainly the angel of the two authors has delivered big! With their terminal cheerfulness they have touched the life of many innocent American souls and vastly expanded their bank account.

Met my soulmate 2 weeks after this book.......2004-11-20
I have told so many people the story of how I met my soul mate and husband and it is the most bizarre and wonderful thing that ever happened to me. I wont get into detail but 2 weeks after I read this book and did my prayer I met my soul mate. It has been so long since I read this book and I hope I can find it at home somewhere. I remember feeling rather silly saying this prayer but I did and wow.. 2 weeks later it was magical and there was definite divine intervention for this to happen. Thank you Kim, and sorry this review just doesn't do your book justice but it the condensed version.
Too fairy tale..........2004-08-19
I think the above resumes what I found here: fairy tales, not angels.
This is a How-to Manual, but you still have to do the Work........2004-01-23
I just finished the book the other night. I found it very interesting and informative... Will I be able to sit and quiet myself for the amount of time that it takes to do some of these exercises?? That will take a lot of Work on my part. I have trouble turning off the "Noise" in my head. Do I beleive in what she's saying?? Absoultely... I have had vist's and have heard "Voices" from unseen forms, most always when I'm sleeping. Maybe some of the people that say this book doesn't work for them, are like me and have trouble Turning off, and Tuning In to themselves. It's not an easy task, you stil have to be Open and Non-Judgemental. I've read a lot of book's over the past couple of years on spirituality, and this one gave very specific instructions.
A wonderful book.......2002-10-11
I read this book when I was first starting out. While I found it a little hard to follow everything, I soon found my own way to talk to my angels and guides. I would recommend this book to anyone just starting out into the world of soul and spirit.
How to Talk to your Angels.......2000-08-15

cute and pretty, but only o.k........2007-07-06
ms. virtue seems like a great, smart woman, but i really don't agree with these cards. i think she's trying to make a quick sale (i mean look at how many products she has), and by always using the name of the "angels". her "cards" are ONLY 12 cards! and they contain extremely vague, general "messages". i honestly don't see how they can help you with anything or tell you anything. they can't! so the cards are a total waste, and i think it's just a ploy to fill the kit and make $. the reason i didn't give it 1 star is because i think the whole kit and design is cute and pretty, and seems like thought was put into that, and the main reasons are, i like the rose quartz, incense, candle, and dead sea bath salts. i think they are unique items that can be beneficial not only for "angel readings" but any "psychic, divinitation" practice. although they are mini sizes. i guess if they were bigger the kit would cost more. so in conclusion, the cards are beautifully designed, but the whole concept sucks, and won't work, but everything else in the kit i like. also another thing is there's so many things you have to do just to give an angel card reading; take a bath, pray over the candle, pray for the cards, hit each card to knock negative energy out, and this, and that, and this.... just little, nonesensical instructions, you know. ms. virtue gives so many instructions. if you like quick things, this prbbly isn't for you.
The Oracle Card Decks with Booklets are more useful..........2007-02-07
The kit was very cool, and fun to use, a few times. But I own several of Doreen's card sets, like Messages from your Angels, and Goddess Guidance Oracle Cards and I get much more use out of them. For example, its easy to flip through the little guidebooks that accompany the 44 card decks in the morning to get inspiration fast.
My complaint is 1: that there are only 12 cards in this set. And 2: while this kit good if you like to do a whole ritual, with a bath, and a listening meditation with an audio CD, etc, I find that the cards are nice to pick up if you only have a minute. Plus the card sets are easier to transport (in a purse or whatever).
Excellent .......2007-01-10
I was very happy with my order. It was brand new, still in the wrapper and it was delivered very fast! Thank you.
Must Have!.......2006-11-04
As an Angel Therapy Practitioner, trained by Doreen, and someone who assists others to connect with their angels, I find this kit to be invaluable! Everything you need is contained within this beautiful box: oracle cards, a journal, a simple explanation book and CD, dead sea salts to help relax and detox the body, a white candle, rose quartz and incense.
I do this work professionally and I learned a few new tools from this simple yet powerful format.
If you want to connect with your angels and only want to purchase one item to start, this is the one to get! You won't be disappointed!
Good insite for beginners / skeptics.......2006-07-09
The kit is a good introduction to the world of angels. It gives insight to beginners (like me), but I will say, it leaves you wanting to know more. I would recommend this to anyone who is curious about angels. It's a small investment that can break down skepticisms one might have. I wasn't sure about all of this "connecting with your angels" stuff at first. But once you give them a chance, they can help guide you in life. They've come though for me whenever I've asked them to. When I bought this kit I also purchased the archangel oracle card set. I was surprised at how accurate they can be. I'm a believer, now, and Doreen Virtue really seems to know her stuff. I have purchased other books, CDs, ect. from her. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:
Sencillamente maravilloso........2006-07-25

Yo he leido este libro muchas veces y lo he recomendado a muchas personas.
