Book Description

William Faulkner never stood taller than five feet, six inches, but in the realm of American literature, he is a giant. More than simply a renowned Mississippi writer, the Nobel-Prize winning novelist and short story writer is acclaimed throughout the world as one of the twentieth century's greatest writers, one who transformed his "postage stamp" of native soil into an apocryphal setting in which he explored, articulated, and challenged the "old verities and truths of the heart."

In this collection, we are proud to present a historic recording of Mr. Faulkner reading his 1949 Nobel acceptance speech and excerpts from As I Lay Dying and The Old Man.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Faulkner's many voices.......2006-03-25

I have been unable to take these CDs out of my automobile's CD changer since I bought this set. It has really rekindled my interest in Faulkner. I never cease to be awestruck by this great American writer's ability to capture the distinct voices of people of all classes, races, ages and of both genders. And the three able actors who read these stories--Debra Winger ("A Rose for Emily" and "Barn Burning"), Keith Carradine ("Spotted Horses"), and Arliss Howard ("That Evening Sun" and "Wash") all do an excellent job of rendering these voices with great authenticity and compassion. Besides being examples of Faulkner's best short stories, the stories provide an excllent introduction to several families that are central to his most powerful and memorable novels ("That Evening Sun" introduces us to the Compson children who are the subject and narrators of THE SOUND AND THE FURY; "Barn Burning" and "Spotted Horses" introduces us to the "tribe" of Snopeses who are the focus of Faulkners great trilogy, THE HAMLET, THE TOWN, and THE MANSION; and "Wash" gives us insight into Colonel Sutpen, whose full story is told in ABSALOM, ABSALOM!" The selection of stories also does a good job of representing the range of Faulkner's talent and vision--the folksy humor of country people, the tragic character of the oppressed and marginalized, and the frustration people experience when their traditional values fail to equip them for the intrusion of modernity. It's all here.

The CD set is augmented by several readings by Faulkner himself. (These are old recordings that were originally issued on vinyl and reissued on audiocassette, but it's great to have them on CD at long last.) Faulkner's reading from AS I LAY DYING is fast and breathless and is especially poignant in the Vardaman sections where he endows the youngest Bundren with a seer-like wisdom and nerve-rattling existentialism. The excerpt from perhaps his most difficult novel, A FABLE, and his brilliant Nobel Prize acceptance speech are stunning indictments an man's propensity to wage war coupled with a celebration of the human race's capactiy to endure and prevail in spite of depth of its folly.

My only regret is that I paid full price for these CDs at a bricks and mortar store (who shall remain nameless). Get it from Amazon.com! It's the best price I've seen. And with the money you save, treat yourself to Hans H. Skei's book, READING FAULKNER'S BEST SHORT STORIES, which discusses all of the stories on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Some Faulkner for Those Rides Through the Countryside.......2005-02-19

Caedmon has done it again. This is an excellent selection of Faulkner's short stories (A Rose for Emily, Barn Burning, That Evening Sun, Spotted Horses, and Wash--all unabridged) and excerpts from a few of his longer works, all read very well with passion and control by Debra Winger, Keith Carradine and Arliss Howard. But the best part of this collection has to be the opportunity to hear Faulkner himself read from "As I Lay Dying", "A Fable" and "The Old Man", plus his 1949 Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech. Running 5 hours long, on 5 discs, this is a great collection for Faulkner enthusiasts and audio book addicts alike.

    Book Description

“Rendered by the author with a rich deep-south accent that gives uncanny realism to each of the selections undertaken. His reading pace is neither slow nor fast and he conjures up many vivid, picturesque images for his listening audience. . . Strongly recommended.”' - Roslyn News

This historic recording contains the first readings by William Faulkner of his work. One hearing is hardly enough. As in his books, penetration deepens with each new experience of the work. Yield to Faulkner's serenity, the deep-south way with words, the unaffected ease with which he drifts into Yoknapatawpha dialect. A recording more important than this is not likely to be made soon.

Includes: The Nobel Prize acceptance speech, As I Lay Dying (Tull-Darl-Vardaman-Vardaman), A Fable (excerpt), The Old Man (excerpt).

William Faulkner (1897-1962) is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all American novelists and short-story writers. His other works include the novels The Sound and the Fury, The Reivers, and Sanctuary. He twice won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and in 1949 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

This audio reproduces the full sound spectrum of the historic recordings; it has been re-mastered using contemporary digital equipment.

    Book Description

Faulkner's great comic novel moves on the wheels of breathless suspense. Lucius Priest, Boon Hogganbeck, and Ned McCaslin "borrow" Lucius grandfather's automobile at the beginning of a hilarious journey that pales in comparison to what awaits the reivers (plunderers or freebooters) in Memphis. Ned trades the auto for a most dubious racehorse. How the reivers grapple with the crisis is the mainspring of the story which leads from a brothel to a brush with the law to the most bizarre horse racing in fact or fiction!

The wild humor and the frenetic action will not, however, obscure to the listener that "The Reivers," like all of Faulkner's work, is about moving and tender human relationships and moral insights into human conduct.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The complexity of Faulkner in a straight forward novel.......2007-08-24

William Faulkner is one of my all time favorite authors, one who I greatly admire and love. His writing always seem fluid in its movement from paper to mind, giving up such a full picture of what is going on. The Reivers is yet another novel that draws you in and makes you feel as though you are right there with Lucius, Boon and Ned as there adventures lead them to Memphis.

All, of course, did not go as planned. Lucius Priest, an elven year old boy, is persuaded by Boon, a character we've seen in other Faulkner novels (such as Go Down, Moses), to "borrow" Lucius' grandfather's car. Eventually the star of the book, Ned McCaslin, is discovered and the adventure soon took a decidedly different direction.

The Reivers is a great comic, picaresque novel that is one of Faulkner's easier novels to read. This does not distract from the novel and, in a way, lends the story its credibility. At times we see the naive and ignorant young Lucius, then we meet the older narrator Lucius. Boon the mastermind, only to be usurped by Ned. The morals and the justice of the story all come together nicely by the end.

Faulkner is one to be admired, and I have yet to pick up one of his novels and not be impressed. Although some find his novels too complex or confusing, this one is a much easier read and allows the reader to enjoy the complexity of Faulkner in a much more straight forward manner.

    5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars A great comic adventure!.......2007-01-04

Faulkner's "The Reivers" is a great comic adventure about the early days of automobiles, when it was rare to see one. The story is about a misadventure that a young boy, and two of his father's employees get into when they 'borrow' his grandfather's car for a joyride from rural Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-11-04

The Faulkner I've previously read explores mans' imperfections and failures. This book celebrates them. The story is told from the perspective of a young boy, and his sentence structure and punctuation takes getting used to, but it's worth it. The book is beautifully and joyfully written.

    3 out of 5 stars Faulkner's last novel.......2006-07-10

Although I had read Faulkner's other major works, I only just recently got around to completing this novel. As students of Faulkner know, this book is not--nor did its author intend it to be--a major work of literature. For those just beginning to read Faulkner, it will prove much more accessible than the classic texts (like The Sound and the Fury), and it will introduce them to some of the author's characters and themes--but it won't introduce them to important elements of his Modernist technique.

The novel has a great deal of charm, however, and I will take this opportunity to suggest that it be assigned as summer reading (do they still do that?) for students in about 10th grade. It's a coming-of-age story that has to do with responsibility. At the end the grandfather says to Lucius following the boy's adventure in Memphis: "A gentleman can live through anything. He faces anything. A gentleman accepts the responsibility of his actions and bears the burden of their consequences, even when he did not himself instigate them but only acquiesced to them, didn't say No though he knew he should" (p. 302).

1 out of 5 stars Trying to finish it.......2006-01-13

This book is very hard to read. Excruciatingly painful in dull plot as well as the overly wordy text. I am going to finish it as an exercise in tenacity.

Great book and a great finale to the series. I would recommend this series to anyone. Fern Michaels goes where other writers don't and keeps your interest through the entire series.

    5 out of 5 stars Texas Sunrise.......2007-01-09

I really enjoyed this book. Fern Michaels does an excellent job of keeping one interested in the story line. The whole Texas series, Las Vegas series, and Kentucky series are all intertwined stories about the same extended family. I couldn't stop until I had read all ten books.

5 out of 5 stars 5 STAR READINGS OF LONE STAR STATE SERIES.......2005-12-07

Granted, Texas is my adopted state so I have good reason to be drawn to this series by Fern Michaels. However, do believe I would have been caught up in it no matter where I lived. Voice performer Laural Merlington hooked me with her reading of the first in the series, Texas Heat. Then she reeled me in when she delivered Texas Rich, and I couldn't wait for Texas Fury.

Texas Sunrise, as read by Merlington, is a more than satisfactory conclusion to her previous performances of the Coleman family saga. Hearing her reminds me a bit of seeing a really, really good play - you applaud but also wish for more.

Matriarch Billie Coleman Kingsley has lived a full and fruitful life - she has built an incredibly successful business and well understood the responsibilities of wealth and power. But now, sadly, she is nearing the end. Of course, her family gathers - daughters Maggie and Susan, grown grandchildren Cole and Sawyer.

Each of these individuals has proven to be less than Billie had hoped, but now with her impending death they must take another look at who they are and what they are. Will they be able to live up to her standards or will the family dynasty die with her?

Sorry to see this series end, but it's been great listening all the way. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars World Hopping with Ellis and Friends.......2006-02-03

PLANETARY, by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday, has been one of the most fascinating comic book series I've ever seen/read/enjoyed. It concerns the adventures of a group of mystery archeologists who go round the world uncovering the hidden bits that keep our world a strange place to be in, the way it SHOULD be. These bits take on the shapes of major comics culture touchstones embedded in the conciousness of die-hard fans (Monster Island, Superheroes, Sherlock Holmes, Doc Savage) but with that arcane twist that has made Ellis a great postmodern comics writer (anothe great title is GLOBAL FREQUENCY--ever wonder what the $6 Million Dollar Man would REALLY be like? Take a look, if you dare.)

The team, made up of: Elijah Snow, born at the turn of the 20th century, has the power to generate cold, cranky as all get-out and the founder of the Planetary Agency; Jakita Wagner, an orphan who hates to be bored and is as powerful as she is beautiful; and the Drummer, who can communicate with any and all mechanical devices with the help of his drumsticks, all roam the world, looking for the aforementioned "artifacts", but also trying to stop those that would with hold those wonders from the rest of us (ever wonder what the Fantastic Four would really be like--once again, look, if you dare).

CROSSING WORLDS takes the reader on a wild ride through adjacent realities where the Planetary team encounter--in order--The Authority (one of PLANETARY's sister team magazines in the WILDSTORM line), a version of the JUSTICE LEAGUE (of DC COMICS fame) and, last but not least, BATMAN (no other intro needed).

Ellis handles the writing chores, while Phil Jimenez (THE INVISIBLES, OTHERWORLD, INFINITE CRISIS) does the artwork on the Authority tale, Jerry Ordway(ALL-STAR SQUADRON, POWER OF SHAZAM) delineates the JLA tale and JOHN CASSADAY (CAPTAIN AMERICA, ASTONISHING X-MEN) brings his unique vision to BATMAN: NIGHT ON EARTH--the best of the three. The Authority tale gives a glimpse of the premiere team of the WILDSTORM universe and the JLA spin unfortunately falls short of what could have been a suspensful tale of what could happen if the Planetary team followed the path of the Four, trying to keep Humanity dull and boring.

BATMAN: NIGHT ON EARTH follows Elijah, Jakita and the Drummer to Gotham City where a young man is committing impossible murders only to meet multiple iterations of the Dark Knight, with Cassaday bouncing through various representations of the character throughout his long history. A sight to behold and a great jumping on point for new readers.

Other Planetary collections; AROUND THE WORLD; THE FOURTH MAN and LEAVING THE 20TH CENTURY gather the hard-to get early issues of this marvelous series.

                      It's a strange world.

                      Let's keep it that way.

2 out of 5 stars Planetary: Crossing Worlds.......2005-09-07

Planetary: Crossing Worlds is a woefully inconsistent collection of stories that feature crossovers with The Authority, JLA and Batman. There are three self contained stories presented here, and all fall short of anything we have seen in the ongoing Planetary series which is arguably the best work by writer Warren Ellis to date. In his regular series, Ellis manages to stimulate our imagination with over-the-top but fully realised ideas that are an exhilarating blend of pseudo-science and pulpy, nostalgic treasures of days gone by. In contrast, Planetary:Crossing Worlds feels incomplete. It lacks the cleverness and spectacle that has pushed this title's namesake into comic book greatness. Little if anything is added by way of character development and the disjointed story telling will put off all but the most hard core Ellis fans.

In the first story (Planetary/Authority: Ruling the World) Phil Jimenez lends his detailed pencils to what should have been a classic encounter between Ellis's two best creations. Instead we are presented with an `alien fish' invasion story that fails to rise above mediocre. If you were anticipating interaction and dialogue between the two teams you will be sorely disappointed. There is a brief flashback `encounter' from 1939 between Elijah Snow and Jenny Sparks but little else is on offer by way of a `crossover.'

The second story (Planetary/JLA: Terra Occulta) is even less satisfying and ends up a confusing mess. Featuring serviceable if unspectacular artwork by Jerry Ordway this story is set in an alternate Earth where an evil Planetary rule the world and the only ones that can stop them are Diana, Bruce and Clark. Little respect is shown for any of the characters here and the reader is given little reason to care for where this story takes us.

The final tale is able to partly redeem this collection thanks mostly to the stunning pencils of John Cassaday. Planetary/Batman: Night on Earth takes Planetary to alternate Gotham realities where they meet numerous incarnations of the Bat. Both amusing and rewarding for those familiar with Batman over the past 20 or so years, we are finally treated to some great action and interplay expected of a crossover book. However as much fun as Ellis and Cassaday must have had putting this together, there is a sense of novelty here and nothing substantial to pick up on a second reading.

All in all, Planetary: Crossing Worlds offers little to regular and casual comic book fans and is hard to recommend. The crossovers feel forced and Ellis fails to hit his stride. Perhaps if given more space to flesh out each story there could have been a better presentation, but it is doubtful there will be second chances for future comic books featuring these characters.

(Also of note: this collection has 2 pages of miscellaneous sketches for Planetary/JLA but does not present the original comic book covers anywhere)

4 out of 5 stars Previously released crossover collection.......2004-04-15

Crossing Worlds collects three previous Planetary stories, all of them crossovers: Planetary/Authority in which both teams encounter the same evil Lovecraftian threat, then independently repel an invasion from the Bleed; Planetary/JLA where the heroless DC universe is ruled by the very Four-like Planetary corporation and it's up to Clark Kent, Diana Prince and Bruce Wayne to find out why; and lastly Planetary/Batman where the field team meet the Batman during an encounter with the son of Science City Zero survivor in Gotham City.

Planetary/JLA is the only one (seemingly) out of continuity with the series for those that care about that sort of thing. All three are good stories with great art. My only complaint is that each are very brief and could have benefited a great deal from an extra ten or so pages to let the story unfold.

Ellis. I like him, even if he mocks us 'Merkins ruthlessly.

Since there is currently no information about this collection, I'll provide the blurb from www.warrenellis.com:

"Collecting: PLANETARY/THE AUTHORITY: RULING THE WORLD, and PLANETARY/JLA: TERRA OCCULTA and PLANETARY/THE BATMAN: NIGHT ON EARTH. Illustrated by Phil Jiminez and Jerry Ordway and John Cassaday."

I enjoyed the Authority crossover. In presenting the two sets of characters, he maintains the tones of each: the Authority continue to be a god-awful scary group of super heroes and the Planetary field agents continue to squint suspiciously at the world.

I've not read the other issues included in this collection, though I hear that the better, if sad, nod to JLA is in Planetary 10 "Magic and Loss".

lovecraft was definitely a racist, but lots of people were then so its a non-issue.

planetary is good. especially liked the alternate superman/wonderwoman/green lantern story.

                      Book Description

A memorable trip to Scotland leads psychotherapists Adele von Rust McCormick, Marlene Deborah McCormick, and Thomas McCormick — authors of Horse Sense and the Human Heart: What Horses Can Teach Us About Trust, Bonding, Creativity, and Spirituality and pioneers in the use of horses to treat mental illness — to the belief that Celtic mysticism holds important insights into equestrian-partnered spirituality. Through strange and serendipitous encounters, they learn that the Celtic people intentionally befriended horses to cultivate the human heart and soul, and that the horse accompanied the Celts as they spread their spiritual vision far and wide.

The McCormicks soon find themselves on a wisdom pilgrimage. From India to Mexico to southern Spain and Morocco, they follow the age-old relationship between horses and humans. As they become initiated into the hidden world of animal energy and instinct, the McCormicks learn to incorporate spirituality and religion with their psychological training. Horses and the Mystical Path is an inspiring exploration of their journey.

The first book, Horse Sense and the human Heart I think set the tone for the whole work of horse therapy. This is just a bunch of hoo ha about being Irish and horses.

Buy the first one in vast quantities. It's the gold standard.

Intimate. This book paralleled my own journey with spirituality through horses. Stunning to read in deep and historic context. Important work; well worth the effort. Emotional: Many "AHA!" moments. This work brings together the spiritual, the historical, the philosophical and psychological here on earth.

2 out of 5 stars Trading allure for accuracy.......2007-03-19

As the synopsis describes, this book is about a relationship with horses built around an inward and outward journey that the authors undertook and share with the readers. My knowledge of horses and equestrian issues is fairly small and for that reason I abstain from commenting on this book on those grounds. On the other hand, I do hold some solid notions on some of the cultural and geographical references the authors use (I'm Portuguese and living currently in Spain).
The recurring ignorance showed by some American citizens concerning non-American realities has become a sort of established joke outside the US borders. Unfortunately, the authors of this book live up to such jest. The description of the Iberian Peninsula portrayed in this book is, at times, so absurd, it gets hilarious. However, such absurdity seems to take itself quite seriously which impels me to warn off unwary readers, lest they might fall in love with the idea of visiting the place where its habitants, «The Iberians staunchly maintain that the horse is a gift from God, a gift to help humanity see the light and the truth» (p. 18). After all, it sounds quite tempting to meet the natives, if we take into account that «The Spanish people live close to this myth» - none other than the lost city of Atlantis (p. 19). Indeed, that's part and parcel of the whole country «culture's mythology» (Ibidem). Not surprisingly, then, it shaped the character of the «Iberian horse community» (p. 17), whatever that means.
No doubt that bringing up the topic of Atlantis with the indigenous man in the street might raise some interesting situations, if somewhat unexpected ones. Not to mention the outcome of a visit to Galicia, hoping to meet the natives wearing the kilt and speaking Gaelic (p.32). I feel obliged to warn such travellers that unless they are endowed with a strong sense of humour, they are in for a major disappointment.
Suffice to say that from the moment I read such proclamations, I couldn't take this book seriously, much as I wanted to. In fact, I couldn't finish it. Still, I choose to believe that the authors are well intended in everything they say and their attitude seems, overall, a good one.
The exercise of gathering and melting down cultural references and traditions, so abundantly used in this book, is in itself an ambitious endeavour, one that few people are capable of mastering with accuracy, seriousness and grace. In this day and age, the thirst for existential meaning has made this kind of venture very popular despite the fact that, most often than not, such attempts fall very short indeed. This work is such a case. The journey for spiritual disclosure, through our cultural mazes, is a most enticing quest, but it should not, under any circumstance, depend on the easy observing of appearances. On such journey there are no valid «short-cuts».

5 out of 5 stars Yes, the eyes of God are looking back at us........2007-03-06

I read this all too brief book in a leisurely fashion over two months. Every time I entered its pages I soon had the feeling that I was talking with an ancient yet brand new spiritual friend. The mystical visitations by the Scottish shepherd, the Spanish waiter, the Mexican cathedral guide, and the sensitivity and sensible knowing of the authors' prized horses pierce the veil in the most profound mystic traditions, yet ground us with their practicality, their inevitability. Yes, great forces are available to us if we only open ourselves. Good will, the wish to benefit other beings, shines from every page of this book. The authors' refreshing passages about communion are inspiring.

The moment I reluctantly finished this book, I handed it to my fifteen year-old son, Eoghan, who was born in Ireland. An hour later he was hooked, too, or I should say befriended. I would like very much to meet these spiritualist authors. I don't know how I can afford it, but I would love to attend one of their equine retreats. Yes, that would be a valuable component to add to my own spiritual practice. For now, I thank them for their visitation, so like an answered prayer!

--Robert McDowell, author of the forthcoming Poetry in Your Spiritual Practice.

On a trip to Scotland the family psychotherapist team of Adele, Deborah and Thomas McCormick investigated early Celtic mysticism and discovered elements of this mysticism that aided in their work using horses as therapeutic aids. Spirituality blends with practical applications in HORSES AND THE MYSTICAL PATH: THE CELTIC WAY OF EXPANDING THE HUMAN SOUL, drawing important connections between horse psyche and mystic elements.
