In The Whore's Child, Richard Russo's first collection of short fiction, the 2002 Pulitzer Prize-wining author of Empire Falls explores difficult emotional territory while retaining the assured wisdom and humor of his best work. Infidelity, self-reflection, and the fallibility of memory come into consideration in this entertaining and perceptive collection. The book's titular story sets the tone for the whole: an elderly nun crashes a college writing workshop and composes her own life story, sharing the details of her childhood growing up in a convent as the abandoned daughter of a prostitute. As her troubling story unfolds, the class realizes the fictions she has unknowingly imposed upon it. Other stories examine familial relationships and responsibility: the bittersweet "Joyride" follows the desperate road trip of a mother and son, each running from troubles they won't admit to. The collection's best and most lighthearted story, "The Mysteries of Linwood Hart," explores the daydreaming, curious mind of 10-year-old Linwood as he ponders the self-defeating behavior of his family, the desires of inanimate objects, and his perceived place at the center of the universe. Russo surveys these subjects with skilled ease and accuracy, communicating a quiet understanding of his characters and their personal yet universal concerns. Russo, like Flannery O'Connor, has a gift for conveying the absurdity and severity of everyday life with brutal honesty, humor, and compassion:
It was an awful place, but Lin understood it was as perfectly real as every place else in the world, which was large beyond imagining, containing every single place he himself had ever been or never would see in his entire life.
Uncommon in its natural insight, The Whore's Child recognizes the often unwelcome realities of experience and is all the more exceptional for it. --Ross Doll
Book Description
To this irresistible debut collection of short stories, Richard Russo brings the same bittersweet wit, deep knowledge of human nature, and spellbinding narrative gifts that distinguish his best-selling novels. His themes are the imperfect bargains of marriage; the discoveries and disillusionments of childhood;the unwinnable battles men and women insist on fighting with the past.
A cynical Hollywood moviemaker confronts his dead wife’s lover and abruptly realizes the depth of his own passion. As his parents’ marriage disintegrates, a precocious fifth-grader distracts himself with meditations on baseball, spaghetti, and his place in the universe. And in the title story, an elderly nun enters a college creative writing class and plays havoc with its tidy notions of fact and fiction.
The Whore’s Child is further proof that Russo is one of the finest writers we have, unsparingly truthful yet hugely compassionate and capable of creating characters real that they seem to step off the page.
Customer Reviews:
True but sad........2007-05-19
Russo is a master. Great writing, great story telling and a great read. Sometimes his realism is sad and his characters depressed. He's not Mr. "Uplifting".
Excellent Short Stories with Believable Characters.......2007-03-20
"The Whore's Child" is an unbelievably touching collection of short stories that showcase Richard Russo's ability to portray various characters as vulnerable, human and sympathetic. The title story is about an elderly nun that enters a creative writing class and proceeds to give a very sad retelling of her life since she was a very little girl. Surprisingly, the ending is not what you might expect as you are reading the story. It speaks to Mr. Russo's creativity that he can deliver this story with so much detail that you can feel the pain that the characters are expressing.
"Monhegan Light" is a story of a man's journey into the past to learn about the secrets that his wife kept from him. He wants to learn about the man that was her lover. In exploring her past he discovers much about her lover and even more about himself. This journey makes you feel sympathy for all the characters involved. To me, it is amazing that Mr. Russo can accomplish this with such apparently unsympathetic characters.
"The Farther You Go" is a story about a man who has to help out a daughter who is having trouble with her marriage. As he goes about helping her part with her abusive husband, he discovers his own feelings towards his wife and the fact that his wife appears to know him better than he has ever understood. The story is a touching view into two marriages--one that has worked and one that hasn't.
"Joy Ride" is another view of a failed marriage. A woman that is unhappy with her life and husband decides to take a cross country trip with her son to escape the husband she no longer loves. She never makes it to her destination, but she and her son discover much about themselves through the experience. I did not enjoy this story as much as the other ones, but it is not bad if judged on its own.
"Buoyancy" is about a trip that a husband and wife make to an island after his retirement from a long career in academia. This is the same island that they travelled to thirty years before. I like this story because it also results in the husband and wife discovering how much they are a part of each other's life and how important they are to each other. I would have called the story, "Bookends."
"Poison" is about two couples discussing and thinking about their lives. They are each dissatisfied in one way or another, yet they are held together by the bonds that comfort and familiarity create between friends and husband and spouses. The fact that the story takes place near a beach lends a certain feeling to the story--almost as if life comes in waves.
"The Mysteries of Linwood Hart" is a short story about a boy dealing with some of the stresses of growing up. He has to deal with a father and mother who are separated, a father who prefers not to get along with his brothers and a coach who is in love with his mother. All this takes place while the ten year old is experiencing confusion about his place in the world. The conclusion of the story unravels a seemingly complicated life and simplifies it almost instantly. The way this happens remains a partial mystery to Linwood--one that he is beginning to understand.
I recommend this book. Every story is touching, well written and thought provoking. Mr. Russo is an amazing writer and I look forward to reading more of his work.
Similar stories crush this collection.......2007-01-30
Having enjoyed Russo's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Empire Falls," I was eager to give something else of his a try. Maybe I should have selected one of his earlier novels instead because "The Whore's Child," interesting title aside, becomes tired and repetitive very quickly. The themes are the same in each story: aging male professor with an itchy prostate faces a mid-life situation, usually involving his younger second wife. That may sound too specific to relate to all of the stories in this collection, but you would be disappointed to realize that it is very accurate. The lone exception, and the novel's best story, is the titular work about a nun who is, in point of fact, a whore's child -- and the discrepancy between the generations makes for a poignant story. And yet, even that one includes a male professor character who is teaching the nun in his creative writing class, so similarities remain. Despite that, the story is great. The rest ... well, if Russo had done away with the other six achingly similar stories and expanded them into a single novella the book would have been much better. Russo is certainly capable of spinning a great yarn, and the themes are fine if a little familiar (Russo seems to be an author that excells in that domain). I just think you would do better to stick with the format best suited to his talents: his novels. I know that I will from now on.
How many stories about professors do we need?.......2006-08-12
Russo reminds us always of the intricacies of human relationships. He puts in perspective the gentle twists and complications between people, husbands and wives, parents and children, that propel us through life or keep us trapped in silence. Sometimes we need to be reminded that stories do not need to be built around big or overly-dramatic events. It is often these small events, the small interactions between people that can be most effecting in our lives. Naturally, these things should make good topics for stories. These stories are very insightful, though at times we return to the same ideas we see in all sorts of short stories. How many stories about professors do we need? Despite some familiar, or all too common, storylines, Russo definitely shows us that strong things come from his pen.
Not his best.......2005-12-14
This Russo collection of short stories didn't really work for me. I love his books like Straight Man and Nobody's Fool but I just couldn't get into this outing from him. It could very well not be Russo's fault, I tend to have issues with short stories in general.

Book Description
It takes a thief to catch a thief...and one kiss to steal a heart.
For one brief moment, Lady Emily Knight knew what heaven was when she shared a soul–searing kiss with Peter. But a penniless youth schooled in the London streets cannot love a beautiful heiress –– so he vanished, leaving Emily heartbroken . . .
Now a formidable Bow Street Runner, Peter returns to hunt down an elusive thief who's been preying on the Oxfordshire wealthy –– even though his mission must inevitably reunite him with the sensuous beauty who haunts his dreams and whose taste still lingers on his lips.
But as tantalizing embraces enflame their passion once more, will Emily's knowledge of the thief's true identity transform desire into distrust and impassioned lovers into dangerous adversaries?
Customer Reviews:
Thrilling 18th century England romp!.......2007-02-23
Peter Quick is a well respected Bow Street Runner. In his youth however, he was the leader of a group of pickpockets called the Rag-Tag Bunch, who'd taken Emily in when she'd run away from home. Over the years, Peter and Lady Emily became good friends, Emily developed a certain fondness for Peter. On her eighteenth birthday, Peter and Emily shared an Earthshattering kiss, but knowing he could never be good enough for Lady Emily, Peter left her and everybody he'd considered family.
Lady Emily Knight is using the pickpocketing techniques she'd learned from Peter so long ago to steal from the wealthy. She has her reasons and never dreamed the children of Willow Park to be accused of the crimes, or for her brother to enlist Peter Quick's help in catching the thief. Emily is still hurt by his abandonment after their shared kiss, having him occupying the same house while he's hunting the thief has her emotions in a tailspin and hormones roaring out of control.
Tristan, Emily's brother has made a special trip into London to enlist Peter's help in the capture of the Oxfordshire thief. The local constable is even at a loss, except to decide that the thief must be one of the Willow Park children, in particular a young man named Benji. Willow Park is Tristan's very pregnant wife's project and with her now being in her final stages of a very difficult pregnancy after a long string of miscarriages, Tristan is determined to have the thief caught and brought to justice before it distresses his wife any further, not to mention the validity of Willow Park. Peter was once a resident of Willow Park himself. He considers Tristan to be a father figure and the children of Willow Park siblings. With any sort of threat hanging over their heads, he would do everything in his power to protect them. Even if to protect them he's forced to live in the same vicinity as Lady Emily, whom he's still very much in love with but as the son of a prostitute and his father unknown, he could never hope to be good enough for her. Peter is the only man that Emily has ever loved. She's still hurt from Peter's rejection, and subsequent abandonment. He left with no explanation. How can she ever forgive him that? He's back and staying in her family home to help apprehend the thief. What will he do when he finds out that Lady Emily is the thief?
A KISS BEFORE DAWN is a wonderfully amusing romp into 18th century England. This book is full of larger than life characters, a thrilling plot, and streetwise kids that kept me reading and smiling over the bickering all the way to the end. The lingo that is used goes from stuffy upper class to the lower street class and sometimes even a combination of the two. I got the biggest kick out of the squabbling between Miles and Jenna, and adored Benji. I really hope there'll be another book coming with more about these characters. For more about Tristan and Deirdre's story, you'd have to read Kimberly Logan's first book, A KISS BEFORE DARK. Ms. Logan is definitely an author to watch for!

Suprisingly Good.......2006-09-21
I get alittle critical when I try new author since they seem to fall short of my old favorites. But Logan has written a good book for her second novel. I thought both Peter and Emily were wonderful characters and they book seemed to flow fairly well. I hate when authors get off to a great start and lag in the middle. But this author gave me fairly fast moving book throughout the book. They seemed to have good chemistry together not great but good. I am a stickler for chemistry. Some feels forced others have none at all and others have fireworks. This book did not have fireworks but it was still good. I liked the plot of the book, I found it interesting and I liked him be a Runner and not some titled lord. I will be eager to read other books by the author in the future. Good Read!
Even better than her last!.......2006-01-04
I thought "A Kiss In The Dark" was an okay read, so I was pleasantly surprised about how much I loved book 2, "A Kiss Before Dawn". The "romantic/suspense" review threw me for a loop so I kept putting it back in my TBR pile.
This was not what I would categorize as a romantic/suspense. The premise *does* include a mystery, but the romance is at the forefront.
An exciting mix of: sexual tension, sensuality, scorching love scenes, and unrequitted lovers finding each other again, is what to look forward to in "AKBD".
Another great Avon author to watch.
A Must Read!!!.......2005-12-11
Ms. Logan's "A Kiss Before Dawn" was a wonderfully entertaining read. Although this is connected to her first book "A Kiss In The Dark" it is a strong stand alone read and one that will capture readers hearts.
Emily Knight is all grown up now and she has a problem. A big problem. Someone from her past is back and it's not for the greater good. She feels that she must protect her brother and his wife (Tristan and Deidre from AKITD) and if she must turn into a master thief, well steal she shall. That is until her brother brings home her one true heart break.
Peter Quick is now a Bow Street Runner, and he took Emily's heart when he left several years earlier. Once the leader of the Rag-Tag bunch he is now on the right side of the law, and has no idea that the person he's been set to catch is the one woman that he can't have for himself. She's an Earl's sister, he's from the streets. But will their love be denied or will circumstances seperate them?
Emily, Peter, Tristan, Deirdre, and all the rest...specially Benji are back for this page turning read. This was truly a push/pull romance and one that was driven by circumstances, and pride. In other words, a page turner because the reader will be dying to find out just how this will end. Emily and Peter are compelling characters and it was so much fun to visit again with all of our favorite characters from her previous read. Now, if you haven't had a chance to read Ms. Logan's debut effort, fear not you will correct this oversight once you've read this one. Ms. Logan is a star in the making and one author that I will pick up simply because her name is on the cover.

Romance, mystery, and more..........2005-12-04
I was delighted to see Peter and Emily together again. I had been anxiously waiting to read more from this amazing author. Ms. Logan hooks you from the first page. There is a skillful mix of romance, suspense, and mystery. It was so enjoyable to meet up with all the characters from A Kiss in the Dark again at a new stage in their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found it hard to put down. I recommend this wonderful read to any romantic. I can't wait to read Ms. Logan's next book.

Action-packed and full of surprises.......2005-01-07
The seeds of rebellion have been sown, and now - in the third volume chronicling the life and times of Owen Deathstalker - the war finally begins. Deathstalker War is the strongest book in the series thus far, mixing in incredible action and excitement, shocking secrets and betrayals, human drama of the deepest kind, and some completely unexpected subplots. This is just good, old-fashioned space opera. As in the previous two books, Green does let elements of redundancy slip in from time to time, and the big finish is stretched out so much as to be a tad farcical, but this is still a gripping, wonderfully entertaining read.
Before the rebels actually go to war themselves, the war comes to them. On the home world of Golgotha, Empress Lionstone XIV is ravenously eager to put a stop to all the rebel foolishness and make plenty of examples of those who would defy her. Both sides know that four planets will basically determine the victor - Mistworld, refuge of bounty hunters and those who have fallen out of imperial favor , safe haven of espers and clones, and rebel stronghold; Shannon's World, once the ultimate pleasure world but now wrapped in mystery and known as Haceldama, the Field of Blood; Virimonde, an agricultural planet where the Deathstalker (now Owen's nephew) is lord; and of course Golgotha, seat of the imperial government.
The war begins on Mistworld, where Owen Deathstalker, Hazel D'Ark, and a young version of legendary rebel Jack Random, have gone to win the support of the Mistport Council. Aided by a fiendishly dangerous secret weapon called Legion, Empire forces manage to land in force on the planet without detection. The result is war at its ugliest, as Mistworld fights against overwhelming odds for its very survival. They forevermore have a war on this planet, going at it hand-to-hand in the streets, while blood flows in the gutters and men have to climb over dead bodies to advance from one enemy to the next. Then the scene shifts to Shannon's World, where Finlay Campbell, Evangeline Shreck, Giles Deathstalker (the original Deathstalker, who has emerged from 943 years in stasis), and the esper Julian Skye seek to penetrate the mystery that has swallowed up all the imperial soldiers sent to penetrate its silent depths and - most importantly - "rescue" a brilliant imperial tactician who crashed there some time earlier. After the bloody free-for-all of Mistworld's war, the adventure on Shannon's World could not have come as more of a surprise. I won't even dare describe it here - except to say that Green is a remarkably brave author. What initially seems unbelievably silly ends up being the most emotionally compelling section of the book.
Owen's nephew David, accompanied by his friend Kid Death, has set up shop on Virimonde, the planet Owen escaped from when he was outlawed by the Empress. The two young friends ignore their rebel commitments and basically just go about having all the fun they can possibly have on this peaceful, agriculturally rich planet. Then comes news that Lionstone XIV intends to mechanize the entire planet and make an example of the peasants who have been - with the implicit approval of David - flirting with democratic government. It is here on Virimonde that the true madness of the Empress is made clear to all - thanks in no small part to a seemingly omnipresent journalist and cameraman who manage to beam the awful pictures of the bloodbath back to the home world.
All of the principle characters converge on Golgotha in the end, hacking and slashing their way to the Imperial Throne itself. There's a lot of riveting military action, and Green throws in some rather shocking surprises to make things really interesting. The ultimate showdown, unfortunately, is drawn out far too long and becomes something of a farce in terms of its execution, but it was still compelling enough to keep me up into the wee hours of the morning determined to see how everything came out.
Deathstalker War sets the stage for a transition in the series. Everything up to now has led up to the war, and it will be very interesting to see what happens next and how the rebel leaders (whom we readers have already spent over 1500 pages with) will change. I was just a tad down on the Deathstalker series after reading Deathstalker Rebellion, but Deathstalker War has truly recaptured my imagination and fueled my interest anew. This is easily the best of the first three volumes in the Deathstalker series.
One of the best Si FI books I have ever read.......2004-05-13
Mr. Green's Deathstalker series is addictive gripping and just plain fantastic. From the first page to the last you are hooked and eager to want to know what happens next. I actually heard this book in a five volume audio series available on Amazon complete with music and sound effects. The book along with the first two books Deathstalker and Rebellion are read by a series of actors who do a fine job indeed. They make the pages of the printed book come alive and you never want to turn your player off. The characters in this series are some of the best ever created and hats off to Mr. Green for not relying soly on stereo types too often found in Si Fi and Fantasy books. Yes you have those of course, they are a corner stone of any good Si Fi book but Mr. Green has also created characters here which are wild wacky and just plain delicious. My favorite has got to be Valentine Wolf. He is cunning, ruthless and you just got to love his disposition. His lines are some of the best on the audio version and you can tell the actor had a ball with him. This series has lots of surprises along with tons of action. The final scenes in the throne room with the Empress are the best. You just got to love Lionstone even though she is known as the Iron B*****h. The ending was unexpected where she was concerned. Another reason to read this fine series is that it is abit more gear to adults and thus the themes presented are more mature in tone. It was excellent through and through and I hope the remaining books of this series are done in the audio format. Simply loved it. Bravo! Highly recommended.
A solid conclusion to a sweeping Space Opera.......2001-12-02
Perhaps not a genuine conclusion but at least the war is over - or is it? Green has written an enjoyable escapest swashbuckling/fantasy/SciFi series that is just good old fashioned entertainment. Worth the read and the wait because unlike all too many other writers I never got the feel that Green was drawing out the series to enhance his bank account. The plot proceeds at a good pace and the action is almost non-stop.
We're halfway done!.......2000-07-19
This is prime space opera, done in 1990s fashion. Violence and superhuman powers abound; surprises and conflicts never end. An overstuffed universe full of wonderful science fiction cliches, Green's Deathstalker series is a great escapist frolic. It was wonderful seeing Deathstalker win the war (oh, like you didn't know that was going to happen from the first page?). It was also wonderful seeing Jack Random declare that there would be democracy from now on! In that, Green performs a minor miracle, as very, very few space opera or fantasy writers realize the inherent ridiculousness of an empire in outer space, replete with lords and empresses. But then, that's part of why the stuff sells so well, isn't it? I enjoyed it as much as the next reader, and Green truly does offer up an exciting tale.
Probably one of the best books I have ever read........1999-07-10
Along with the other great Deathstalker books before this one. This series reminds me of the French Revolution, just on a greater scale!

Innocence Lost: They called it Shannon's World, a pleasure planet where fantasies and dreams became real, and even the weariest could find rest and comfort. And then the awful thing happened. Afterward, Shannon's world cut itself off from the empire. Visitors were destroyed while still in orbit, no matter whom they represented, and the Empress put the planet under quarantine. So things remained, until the most important strategist in the Empire, Vincent Harker crash-landed on the planet. The Empress sent down a company of her elite battle troops to recover him. They never came back.

Occasionally a book comes along that you want to take outside, shove into the hand of every passerby, and say, "Read this and be enlightened." The Dalai Lama's latest collection of lectures is like that. As you read, you begin to think what a wonderful world it would be if everybody thought like the Dalai Lama. Though the highest ranked leader of a world religion, the Dalai Lama insists that some of the most important aspects of Buddhist practice are nonreligious, particularly the training of the mind. This he sees as essential to cultivating basic decency in the day-to-day life of all people. To understand the motivations of others, to rein in negative emotions, to examine one's own motivations--these are the steps to living peacefully and responsibly in the world. On a deeper theoretical level, the Dalai Lama also introduces the importance of seeing through reality to the two levels of truth as well as exploring karma and the nature of existence. Impromptu question-and-answer sessions round out some of the lectures, giving the listeners a chance to pose their own questions. Read this and be enlightened. --Brian Bruya

Totally disappointed .......2007-10-05
The book came directly from Amazon with the back jacket torn and ripped. So this is a review FOR Amazon, not the book itself.
Good Basic Teaching.......2007-02-14
I listed to the book on tape, and it is the first book I have read by the Dalai Lama. He teaches very simply, and it is easy to understand his concepts. He gives a good overview of Buddhism, and the different types of Buddist teachings. On the Book on Tape I really didn't care for the person doing the reading, but that is a minor point. All in all, I got alot out of it.
Good Book on How to Live Your Life Meaningfully.......2004-02-19
"Pay attention not only to the cultivation of knowledge but to the cultivation of qualities of the heart, so that at the end of education, not only will you be knowledgeable, but also you will be a warm-hearted and compassionate person."
That's merely a brief excerpt from this book filled with whimsical and charismatic anecdotes from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The book is in effect a decade's collection of teachings he has given throughout his life, condensed into a book for our benefit. This collection of talks he gave in the 90's plainly lays out his viewpoint about how to follow the pathway of one's inner self. This is one of those books that you know you won't be able to put into practice flawlessly, but there are things here you will discover that can help you feel better about how you are living and benefit others.
Very Good.......2003-11-21
I enjoyed this book very much. I am not a student of the Dalai Lama but I did enjoy this work. I thought the lectures gave the novice a good idea about Budahist thought.
I would suggest this book to those of different faiths who are curious but do not want a deep thelogical work. This particular work is more like a set of sermons from a Christian preacher might be. While it does not give you the full picture it does give you enough to have a pretty good idea about what is going on in the faith.
I liked very much the discussions compassion. The idea that compassion not only leads to enlightenment but a happier existence here is something all of us no matter what faith we are could follow.
Simply great.......2003-06-20
Hey, read this book! All stuff from Enlightened beings of every religion, philosophy, social caste, skin colour, etc. such as Dalai Lama, Jesus Christ, Jahve, Osiris, Druids or maybe your silent and smiley neighbour are always a good reason to buy, read, listen, etc. their acts and activities!
And is always a pleasure to read/listen/whatever, so may they can infect us with their wonderfull enlightened and happyness virus!! I wanna be infected!
I haven't finished to read this book though, but I can say that it is simply a demonstration's of Dalai Lama's Wide Open Brain! Impermanence is the right word that resumes this book to me => What is eating meat, beans, grains, fruit, milk or vegetables but simply feed the food's need of anyone? Is that really important? Really? Who we are to judge anyone for doing this or that? When we, short of brain humans' may understand?
When are we going to start doing simpler stuff such as being happy and infect people around with this happyness, so everybody can only have to time for joy instead of violence in any of its forms?
Yeaps, I have read some "deeper" books, but hey, what is deepness?
Is "high intellectual" stuff better than having peace inside, and live in happyness with all our surroundng people/sentient beings/wanna-be-sentient beings/or things?
(: Smile :)
Life is short and we all have a lot of things to do!! Read this book and use it for your growing purposes!!
