Book Description

"The first of my father's illusions was that bears could survive the life lived by human beings, and the second was that human beings could survive a life led in hotels."
So says John Berry, son of a hapless dreamer, brother to a cadre of eccentric siblings, and chronicler of the lives lived, the loves experienced, the deaths met, and the myriad strange and wonderful times encountered by the family Berry. Hoteliers, pet-bear owners, friends of Freud (the animal trainer and vaudevillian, that is), and playthings of mad fate, they "dream on" in a funny, sad, outrageous, and moving novel by the remarkable author of A Son of the Circus and A Prayer for Owen Meany.
"Like Garp, [THE HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE] is a startlingly original family saga that combines macabre humor with Dickensian sentiment and outrage at cruelty, dogmatism and injustice."
--Time
"Rejoice! John Irving has written another book according to your world....You must read this book."
--Los Angeles Times
"Spellbinding...Intensely human...A high-wire act of dazzling virtuosity."

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Irving -- quite possibly favorite novel.......2007-03-08

I love this book. I've read about 1/2 of Irving's novels and this is my favorite, though I haven't been disappointed by any. This book is entertaining, compelling, devastating... I could go on and on. He mercilessly kills off characters the reader has developed a fondness for, but somehow keeps us reading. Irving writes with an often dry sense of humor and treads some odd line between realism and absurdity, and it simply works.

Common Irving obsessions pop up -- rape, prositutes, bears, motorcycles, Vienna. A lot of the same stuff from Setting Free the Bears, but he is a more experienced writer here and not afraid to be American and doesn't have the same young man's individualistic bravado that characterized that novel (my least favorite). He writes about the glory and the tragedy of the (inevitably thoroughly dysfunctional) family, which is really what he excels at, I think.

In short, read it. But don't see the movie if you loved the book; despite some perfect casting (e.g. Jodi Foster as Franny), it is horrid.

4 out of 5 stars An absurd look at life.......2006-10-02

"Hotel New Hampshire" a great read. It looks at the life of an anything but normal family. An impulsive often harebrained yet passionate father, an incestuous brother and sister, etc. The story also contains several family friends like Susie who runs around in a bear suit, the old man Freud who is blind and uses a Louisville Slugger as a cane, and whores and bomb-chucking revolutionaries. Since it is a lengthy story that covers practically the entire histroy of a family, to describe the plot would be too much for here. However, it is a beautiful story of a family and their honorary members.
At times is seems to drag a bit due to it being a lengthy tale, later you'll probably find that it is necessary to set up the next part of the story. Some of the symbolism is heavy-handed and some of the changes that happen come across as abrupt and jarring. For some reason though, this works. It was frustrating, but when it comes down to it, it brought a uniqueness and charm to the writing. It almost seems like Irving reigned in his editors, instead of the other way around.
It is absurd, surreal, hilarious and most of all full of love and has passion for life. It looks at all the things that make us human, love friendship, loss, failure and joy.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read.......2006-08-28

I was first introduced to John Irving when my mom recommended me "The World According to Garp." I absolutely loved it, and still do. I kept saying to myself, "This is one of the best books I've ever read." Next, I read "Setting Free the Bears," which, while it was nowhere near as great as Garp, I still liked, overall. The third John Irving book I read was this one, "The Hotel New Hampshire."

I absolutely loved the first half. There's bears, rape, death, Halloween, and school bullies. It really took me back to the magic that was Garp.

But, about halfway through the novel, a couple of characters die rather unexpectedly. I don't know why Irving chose to kill off the characters there and then, but it really threw me out of the story. Just two chapters, and a few months in the book's chronology, before a main character was killed unexpectedly. I don't know why, but it just didn't feel "natural" and it made me realize that I was reading a novel, something made up. It just felt contrived.

After that, though, the book started gathering a little more steam. That is, until it randomly skipped ahead seven years. The family stays in Vienna for seven years, and nothing ever changes. They know the same whores, the same "radicals", and we never even get to meet their school buddies. That's part of what I liked the most about the first half, the people they met at school.

And the way they "deal with" Chipper Dove seemed a little ridiculous, even for John Irving. And after the deaths in the middle, I really couldn't care about any of the characters anymore. None of the deaths in the second half made me in the least bit sad. (I did like the terrorist plot, though.)

In the end, its merits outweigh its faults, and I DID enjoy reading it. But it could have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars Another delightful tale.......2006-03-25

The Hotel New Hampshire is a story of love, family, absurdity, and solidarity. Win Berry graduates from his small New Hampshire high school and goes to work at a resort in Maine to save money to attend Harvard. Mary Bates, also from Dairy, New Hampshire, found herself working at this same resort and the two fell in love over the course of that summer. That summer also brought them Freud, a small German man who had trained a bear and provided entertainment at the resort. He became a life-long friend to the couple and at the end of the summer sold Win the bear. What unfolds is a life's story, told from the perspective of Win and Mary's 3rd child, John, that is as bizzare as it is touching and moving.

The Berry family opens The Hotel New Hampshire in Dairy and the novel chronicles the out of the ordinary experiences that occur in this unlikely hotel. The next stage of the family's life takes them to Vienna to open The Second Hotel New Hampshire. The family experiences a dark period in Austria with tragedy and sadness mixed in to the family's trademark weirdness. Finally, life brings them back to America where each finds their place in life all the while remaining a tight unit, each person a necessary part in the other's life.

Completely unable to describe accurately, John Irving has written another masterpiece. The characters are alive and wonderful and their experiences unpredictable. What makes Irving's novels so fantastic is that the stories are completely fantastic, yet completely realistic all at the same time. If you have read one, you know exactly what I mean. You find yourself falling in love with the characters and feeling as though you are part of their family. I've never met a John Irving novel I didn't love.

5 out of 5 stars the best John Irving book I've read.......2005-11-22

In my opinion this is far and away the best of John Irving's novels (although I admit that I have read nothing more recent than A Prayer for Owen Meany). Up until that point I read everything by Irving that I could get my hands on. This book is hilarious, often bizarre, and sometimes sad. The humor can be pretty raunchy, but it always seems to have a pretty good point to it. Irving has a great gift for creating fascinating characters, and his brilliance in this respect is in full force in Hotel New Hampshire. From sister Franny, to the bear called State of Maine, to the poor and stinky laborador retriever, you will not soon forget this wild bunch of characters. I've read this book several times, and even though I know the story pretty well, I don't get tired of it. It is highly recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Addition to New Hampshire's Seacoast History.......2006-09-11

If, like me, you're fascinated with grand hotels of the past, and especially with those that have managed to survive, you will enjoy Wentworth by the Sea, The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel. Dennis Robinson's book is much more than the history of a hotel; it is the story of New Castle, New Hampshire, from its settlement in the 1600's to modern time. The building, development, and ultimate salvation of the Wentworth has had much to do with this unique island village and its dynamic, fascinating people. The book is artistically done, with more than 250 pictures and drawings from all eras. Well written, it is filled with facts, legend, and lore told in an engaging manner that has its reader beginning at the front cover and following straight through to the end as if reading a novel. A terrific addition to New Hampshire's seacoast history!

      Book Description

The Mobil Travel Guide star ratings are a 45-year-old consumer advocacy concept originally developed following the introduction of the interstate highway system. The goal of the Guide is not to identify and rate every property in the country, but to recommend only the best in each category, ones that we would send our customers to. We look at the stars from a consumer's point of view, rating lodgings and restaurants across North America from the perspective of the "average traveler."The Guides feature new enhanced descriptions for 2004. Listings include lodgings, restaurants, attractions, and events in established travel destinations, as well as cities and towns on the way to established travel destinations. Our new easy-to-use format makes the Guides even more indispensable to travelers. Each regional guide is organized alphabetically by state, with introductory information about the state followed by city listings in alphabetical order. For each city, the guide lists sites and attractions, lodgings, and then restaurants. One of the features that sets the Mobil Travel Guide apart from its competitors is its proprietary Mobil star rating system. Forty-five plus years of publishing experience and the oldest non-biased rating system in North America make the Mobil Travel Guide series a must-have for travelers wanting up-to-date ratings of hotels and restaurants.

      3 out of 5 stars Great Maps.......2005-10-22

The Mobile book has great maps. However, the layout of the book other than the maps is not user friendly. When we traveled in New England, we went to "regions" not just cities. The book is laid out with recommendations under each city. Some of the other books we used had regional groups rather than just cities. The maps were the most detailed and were what we relied upon most of the trip.

5 out of 5 stars Traveller to Maine.......2005-09-10

We checked out the Mobil Travel Guide New England 2005 from the library for our trip to Maine. We thought it was so good, that on our return we ordered it to have for the other states. The hotels, inns, and restaurants were very accurately described. No disappointments.

In a world policed by telepaths, Ben Reich plans to commit a crime that hasn't been heard of in 70 years: murder. That's the only option left for Reich, whose company is losing a 10-year death struggle with rival D'Courtney Enterprises. Terrorized in his dreams by The Man With No Face and driven to the edge after D'Courtney refuses a merger offer, Reich murders his rival and bribes a high-ranking telepath to help him cover his tracks. But while police prefect Lincoln Powell knows Reich is guilty, his telepath's knowledge is a far cry from admissible evidence.

                      Book Description

In the year 2301, guns are only museum pieces and benign telepaths sweep the minds of the populace to detect crimes before they happen. In 2301 murder is virtually impossible, but one man is about to change that...

Ben Reich, a psychopathic business magnate, has devised the ultimate scheme to eliminate the competition and destroy the order of his society. The Demolished Man is a masterpiece of imaginative suspense, set in a superbly imagined world in which everything has changed except the ancient instinct for murder.

5 out of 5 stars Winner of the First Hugo Award.......2007-08-18

Not to be too gushy, but this 1951 classic is one of THE towering classics of 1950's hardcore Science Fiction, and it's the winner of the very FIRST EVER HUGO AWARD.

As if that wasn't praise enough, J.M. Straczynski, the creator of the highly acclaimed and award winning "Babylon 5" series, repeatedly paid open and worshipful homage to the author, Alfred Bester, by basing his "Psi Corps" on the police force in this book. He also named the head of that organization after the author himself. Walter Koenig (Checkov on Star Trek: TOS) was cast as Bester in B5, and Harlan Ellison begged and pleaded until JMS let him made a guest appearance as a Psi Cop working directly for him.

Getting dizzy yet ? Good. I'm not done yet.

Issac Asimov has called it "one of the all-time classics of Science Fiction".

This book also the direct spiritual heir of George Orwell's dark 1949 classic "1984", and the case could also be made that Gibson's classic "Neuromancer" may have been strongly inspired, in part, by this book.

It's a hard hitting, well written, and highly original tour de force, and it rightly earns my highest recommendations. It richly deserves to be re-discovered by a new generation of scifi fans.

4 out of 5 stars An original and clever work still worth reading (4.5 stars).......2007-08-09

At it's core, Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man is a murder procedural but because of the way Bester incorporates the aspect of mind readers, this has become a timeless classic of the science fiction genre.

A non-psychic man commits a murder in a future world where some can read minds to varying levels of ability. The detective on the case is a top level mind reader trying to build enough evidence to convict the killer. The two main characters are both interesting portrayals of the corrupt mega-CEO and the determined detective looking for justice. Both are highly intelligent and at the top of their respective social ladders and this makes for a high powered game of cat and mouse that works on many levels.

Bester also excels at creating an intelligent and fully realized society where telepathic people and "non-tele's", live work and interact. The way Bester integrates telepathy into the various occupations like law enforcement and sales is interesting and clever. I would be interested in revisiting this book's environment with a completely different story and characters just to further delve into the mind reading characteristic Bester has created.

What is equally impressive is how well this book holds up more then 50 years after it was written which is rare for the science fiction genre. This book also has the distinction of winning the first Hugo award for best science fiction of the year (1953).

Bottom Line: A classic sci-fi book that was original in its time and often copied since. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

                      4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

In The Demolished Man, society goes for the Doc Savage school of rehabilitation of criminals. i.e. they alter their brains and minds until they are good productive citizens. Telepaths can generally notice when crimes will be committed beforehand.

Here, a clever supervillain type is at large, and has a plan to change things. A man must try and stop him.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Probably Better in its Own Time........2007-06-21

It's difficult to judge this book fairly so many years after it was published. Many if not all of its conventions have now become mainstream, and therefore have been retold in more (and less) compelling ways, with the effect that all of its major revelations fall flat. Before the popular SF films of the last twenty years, this story--based on other reviews, at least--must have appeared very fresh and interesting.

I found the writing itself average. There were a few thoughtful passages, but overall it was a good story simply told with an ordinary command of the language. The premise is the real strength of this novel, in my opinion. It is well-conceived and reinforced throughout, not by the continuous use of jargon or laborious explanation, but by rich characters whose actions and feelings are believable responses to the strange world they inhabit.

This book is no longer new or surprising, but if you enjoy Sci-fi stories about dark, realistic characters with special mental abilities, you will likely enjoy it.

                      3 out of 5 stars Classic?.......2007-05-06

Upon reading the many glowing reviews of this novel, I picked it up wholeheartedly thinking it would blow me away. Unfortunately, it was a struggle to get through. The idea behind the novel is far ahead of its time. It is quite obvious Bester had the gift of coming up with "far-out" ideas for the 1950s. My complaint is that the characters are amazingly wooden. Dialog was difficult to get through without flashes of 50s serials popping into my head. I kept waiting for someone to say "gee wilikers, say its not so sarge!" Much of the writing reminded me of the early comics: 'Explosion!''Whammy!' The characters never became flesh for me, nor did I care one way or the other what happened in the story. Unfortunately I could not get all the way to the end. I stopped, amazingly, at 170 pages.

I realize its 50 years old - it cannot mask its age. If you read this novel, please take this into consideration. Be ready for characters which express their emotion with wooden insencerity and for male-female relations to harken back to the days of bogey and bacall stiffness. This novel falls into the "great idea, poor execution" category. Read at your own risk.

I would give it one star, however, based upon the merit of the imagination of the writer; and the the fact that It must have raised quite a few eyebrows in 1951: I am giving it three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Discernment as practical art.......2003-03-21

Debra Farrington's book offers sage, practical, insightful direction to those seeking to know more about discernment and how to practice this art. The language is accessible--in my experience, people from high school students to octogenarians engage the material and actively learn from it. The book is a valuable resource for anyone teaching courses on Christian spirituality. The author mulches the text with scripture, stories from the tradition, anecdotes from personal history and other sources. Consequently, the reader is artfully drawn into an ongoing conversation about the practice of discernment, and emerges from the conversation with tools, hope and common sense.
While keeping us mindful of the infinite mystery of God, Farrington reminds us that we have been given capacities to respond to God's desires for us as persons, community, nation, world.
