Book Description

Peter Holmes Dickinson (of the Main Line Dickinsons), a former top speechwriter for President Tyler Ty the Guy Ferguson, is a charming snob, a part-time coke-head, full-time womanizer, and in big trouble. His Washington speechwriting firm is tanking, he owes money to Dean, a hillbilly drug dealer, and also to Jeb Hammerford, a northern Virginia construction executive. And, oh yes, Pete has been shtooping Marlie Rae Perkins, a veritable Valkyrie of a policewoman from rural Virginia, given to periodic fits of overpossessiveness. Perfect for fans of Sammys Hill or Thank You for Not Smoking, The Che School is a screamingly funny, page-turning, equal-opportunity-offending political satire.

1 out of 5 stars Shouldn't satire be funny? This book is disgusting.......2006-05-29

Predictable, out of touch and sour, the only thing funny about this book is the number of straw men Gavin constructs while trying to get laughs. There's a union for people who hate their jobs and bosses--and demand equal treatment and compensation despite being "work challenged". I'm sure that's funny to Mr. Gavin, who must be too young to remember a time before a 40-hour work week.

The flaky Jewish former prostitute, soap star and daughter of a former radical communist leader (did you catch all those?) who started the titular school stands in for the liberal left. Her billions fund not only a school for prostitutes, but also a project to determine the guilt of the various groups that have wronged other groups in Ireland over the ages so that proper compensation can be settled. After laughing at how outlandish that is, I realized he was making fun of Blacks who have called for compensation to the descendants of former slaves.

The most insulting was the argument that Blacks used to be deemed property but are now people, and fetuses used to be people but have now been defined as balls of cells, so therefore what is and is not a person is merely a function of what powerful groups have managed to argue.

Don't waste your time or money.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2006-03-01

I begin this review of "The Ernesto 'Che' Guevera School for Wayward Girls" by Bill Gavin with two pronouncements: I am a friend of Bill Gavin's and, like Bill, I am a former presidential speechwriter (in my case for President Ford). Having made these disclosures, I now admit that I thoroughly enjoyed Bill's new novel. Gavin has gotten his story and his collection of characters exactly right.

"The Ernesto "Che" Guevera School for Wayward Girls: A Novel of Politics" tells the tale of troubled presidential speechwriter Peter Holmes Dickinson and his encounters with a veritable zoo of politicians, political activists, journalists, pundits and would-be statesmen. Many readers of this novel may say: "You've got to be kidding, Washington can't be full of bizarre characters like this!"

I'm here to tell everyone that Bill Gavin's story is exaggerated a bit here and there; but, the White House and the Capitol is loaded with characters like his. I know, I've been there!

Above all, "The Ernesto 'Che' Guevera School for Wayward Girls" is an enlightening inside look at politics, as it is now practiced in Washington. It is funny and enjoyable: but, most importantly, it is well written and, as they say, "a good read".

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER FANTASTIC STORY!.......2002-08-09

The twists and intermingled lives of these characters makes for a fantastic story.

Summer and her brother, John Austin Kuykendall lead off as main characters and involved are Sam McLean and Nannie, Summer's mother.

Along with a triangle of Sam and his wife Libby and son Slater. Slater was trampled and disfigured when Sam was killed.

Enter Sam's sister-in-law, Ellen McLean and her son Travis, owners of the Rockin' S with the Kuykendall homestead between the Rockin' S and McLean's Keep. Ellen is a bewitching, ruthless, blindly determined woman. Travis is a brutal womanizer and someone you want to see get his come-uppance.

Summer and her brother is taken to the homestead by Bulldog and invites Sadie and her little daughter Mary to accompany them.

When Ellen comes to call on Summer she brings along her son, Travis, who petrifies Sadie and Jesse Thurston, her forman.

Jesse is a very quiet, withdrawn man who has Travis's number and no likeing for the blonde man, but he is taken with little Mary and shows his gentle side. Sadie wonders if she dares to dream.

One thing leads to another and the unraveling of each characters story makes it impossible to put the book down [of course it is hard to find a preacher out west] Sure was glad to see the Indian, Bermaga show up. He had been rescude by Summer and in turn saves Slater life.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Haven't found a Garlock book yet that has not deserved a 5 star rating [grin - I am still looking].

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!.......2002-03-19

I keep reading Dorothy Garlock, and I keep ending up surprised and thrilled at the end of each and every novel. This one is absolutely wonderful!

Summer Kuykendahl, with her young brother, travel to west Texas in order to search for a safe haven for themselves, and hoping Sam McLean is the answer to that hope. On her deathbed, Summers' mother pleads for her daughter to send a letter to Sam, promising that he will want to take care of them.

Only Sam has previously been killed, so his son, Slater, answers the email indicating she and her brother owned a plot of land with a cabin on it. However, he signs it S. McLean - worried that Summer and John Austin won't come if they know Sam is dead.

Slater McLean is a tough Texan cowboy with a deep grudge, but a soft spot for the girl he knew for a short time as a child. His face scarred from the attack that killed Sam, and swearing his cousin Travis is the cause of all this tragedy - leaves Slater hard and fearful of how Summer will treat him when she sees his scarred face, chest and back.

This story brings out some surprisingly shocking twists, and deeply hidden family secrets. You'll be surprised at some of the events. Keep in mind, every single woman in this story is stronger than they first appear.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2001-03-22

This was one of the first books I read by Dorothy Garlock. It was an interesting book but not as good as many I have since read. The main male character, Slater, is not likeable. He has a very bad temper. At times the plot was confusing and I was not crazy about the subplot involving a ranch foreman.

Since I gave this book three stars there must be something I found enjoyable about it. Overall the writing was very good and I enjoyed the ending which had a surprising twist.

I have read almost all of Dorothy Garlock's other books since picking this one up and many are simply fantastic. I would encourage you to read this book but also look into other Garlock books.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......1999-07-25

You have to read "This Loving Land" by Dorothy Garlock, it was absolutely wonderful. It's one of those books that makes you feel warm and cozy when your reading it, I hated for it to end. I would also recommend "Love and Cherish", "Ribbon In The Sky", "Forever Victoria", "The Listening Sky", "Sweetwater" and "With Song". As you can see I really like this author.

                            Book Description

Carson calls believers to revolt against superficiality and find again the deeper knowledge of God at Paul's school of prayer. Strong expositional study.

                            Customer Reviews:

                            4 out of 5 stars Prayer Primer.......2004-09-02

This book is a selective primer on biblical praying, examining the prayers of Paul. Each chapter studies a particular prayer from his letters, exploring what Paul prays for and why. For example-in his analysis of 2 Thessalonians 1:3-12, Dr. Carson illustrates how Paul's anticipation of Jesus' return shapes what he prays for the people.

This book was inspirational to me in at least two ways: I find I am praying for people and needs in a more Christ-centered way. I have also grown in my understanding of what it means to pray to a sovereign God.

The reflection questions at the end of each chapter help to make this a very practical book. It would work well for individual or group study, taking one chapter at a time and steadily putting the new insights into practice. I heartily recommend it.

                            5 out of 5 stars Life altering.......2004-02-10

Most everything I can think to say has already been said in the other reviews. I just wanted to add my .02 as I have really enjoyed this book. It truly has been a life altering experience to read this. It has changed my view of prayer, of others, of God. I now have (at least I hope I have) a deeper respect for the Creator of all things.

Rom 11:36 For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

4 out of 5 stars Solid, Spiritual, Scriptural Advice on Prayer.......2003-09-20

Carson offers here an examination of various prayers of the Apostle Paul throughout the New Testament. In a scholarly yet straightforward manner, the author presents nuggets of truth that will enrich the prayer lives of his readers. While I appreciated his exposition of numerous New Testament passages, his most helpful remarks were practical instructions based on his own spiritual development. Chapter one, for example, offers many useful lessons from the school of prayer. Chapter four emphasizes the necessity of praying for others. Chapter seven examines common excuses for not praying.

This book is directed towards the more educated reader or the trained Christian leader. It is somewhat wordy in spots, and drags a bit in its pace. Still, Carson presents solid, spiritual, Scriptural advice that will strengthen the prayer life of each person who reads his work.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on prayer, after the Bible.......2001-09-17

This is quite simply one of the best Christian books I have ever read, short of the Bible itself, and is one of the books I find that I keep coming back to time and time again, for new insight and for its continuing challenge and reminder to think about the way I pray.

In this book, Carson systematically works through all of Paul's prayers in the New Testament. For each one, he presents a careful exegesis - working carefully through the passage and explaining its meaning. He then goes on to show Paul's priorities in his prayer - which are inevitably caught up with Paul's focus on trusting God intimately and on his other-person centredness. Finally, for each prayer, Carson presents some background theology on surrounding issues and shows how this relates to our lives today.

In addition, Carson is extremely practical in the way he provides practical advice and pointers for the way we should be praying. He gives useful advice on what and how we should be praying, based on the passages he works through, but also on how to manage a daily prayer time.

If you are a Christian, you should definitely read this book, particularly if you are keen to think more about the way you should be praying or if you are looking for pointers on how to pray in a Biblical way. If you are not a Christian, this book will still give you a useful insight into what Christians are doing when they pray and why they do it. And you never know - you might even find it challenging and realise that there is something in this Christianity 'thing' after all...

4 out of 5 stars This book can change the way you pray!.......2001-08-18

I taught this book to a class of thirty on saturday mornings and we were riveted by its depth. So often books fall into the shallow "how to" trap. This book moves way beyond the popular craze of "The Prayer of Jabez", to challenge the believer to stretch their prayers to reflect the mind of Christ. Rather than praying about what we want, Carson shows us Paul's New Testament Prayers and leads us to ask for what God wants in our lives. You will be glad you studied this book.
