Reliable Book from Reliable Author.......2006-06-06
When you pick up a Sharon McCone book by Marcia Muller, yuo pretty much know what you are going to get-- a solid detective novel that integrates nicely with Sharon McCone's personal life--and that's okay. In The Dangerous Hour, one of McCone's employees is arrested for credit card fraud and the McCone Detective Agency is the subject of a BBB complaint. Not only that, but they are fighting against allegations leveled against the agency by an Hispanic San Francisco mayoral candidate.
While dealing with all of this, in addition to covering her cases, McCone is also working through the twist that her romance with security operative Hy Ripinski has taken.
One of the things I like about this series is that the McCone character is allowed to grow and become professionally successful. She follows an actual life pathway, as opposed to characters in other series who seem to be frozen in time.
The Dangerous Hour is another solid book in a solid series, with strong, likable characters and believable villains. It's nice to see a mystery author who is able to keep up the quality of her books with the release of the 23rd book in the series.
Classic Sharon McCone mystery.......2006-05-03
This is the kind of mystery that you look forward to getting back to and that will get read quickly but will not keep you up until 3 in the morning because you can't bear to put it down. That's not such a bad thing -- sometimes those keep-you-up-all-night books aren't such a good idea. I've read quite a few in this mystery series and character Sharon McCone feels like an old friend. In this book, there are a number of references to events and people in previous books that might make parts of this book less accessible to new readers, although they really don't have much to do with the plot.
The plot involves the arrest of Jules, one of Sharon's employees (Sharon runs a very successful detective agency in San Francisco). Jules is accused of stealing and using a credit card from the client in a case she was assigned to, and for reasons that aren't very convincing, even before Jules is even arraigned, Sharon's agency is being threatened with losing its license to operate because she is responsible for her employees' actions on the job. Sharon has to prove that Jules didn't do it in order to save the agency. Although Jules has a colorful background, Sharon believes in her innocence, and it quickly becomes apparent that this is a frame with Sharon's agency as the real target. The plot then becomes Sharon trying to find out who is framing Jules, which involves finding out who has a grudge against her that is motivating this frame.
I wouldn't describe this as one of those mysteries that you ought to be able to solve if you read the clues correctly -- it's more of a procedural, where you follow along with Sharon as she tries to solve the case. The real strength of the book is Sharon's likeability -- she's someone you enjoy spending time with in a book -- and Muller's writing skills, which create a whole exciting San Francisco world.
Another great McCone Mystery.......2005-09-06
I have been reading these mysteries from the very first book, it was a nice change to have the book read to me. The book was well read except for some for the pronunciations of some of the famous and infamous locales. I admit I cringed every time I heard Susan Ericksen say Ghirardelli Square.
The characters have evolved nicely over the years and I highly recommend this book, personally I love the audio cd's during my commute to and from work.
Sharon Still Rocks.......2005-06-24
More than 20 books later, Sharon is still the best female PI out there.
It took way too long for this one to come out. As much as I enjoyed "Point Deception" and "Cyanide Wells," I wish Ms. Muller would make a new installment of Sharon her first priority so that we get at least one every year.
A few reasons I enjoyed this one so much:
- It was nice to take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the old cases. I started reading Sharon many years ago, so I enjoyed having my mind nudged on some of her previous adventures. I may have to go back now and read some of the earlier books again.
- Little to no Rae. For some reason, this is the one character in this series to whom I've never been able to warm up.
- No Hy smothering. I might be in the minority, but I'm not a fan of Sharon's relationship with Hy, so I was glad there wasn't too much of him in this book. One of the things I love most about Sharon is her independence -- she works hard and takes care of herself. Since Hy entered her life, now we have private planes and second/third homes, and access to the highest tech gadgets and world-class security. It's made Sharon seem a bit less believable. Unfortunately, based on the ending, it looks like this will only increase in the future, and I just hope Ms. Muller keeps it under control and doesn't completely ruin the character.
I anxiously look forward to the next book and hope I don't have to wait two years for it.
Marcia Muller in top shape!.......2005-06-17
It's amazing, but after so many books Marcia Muller writes with a freshness like she started yesterday. Her heroine Sharon McCone has gone through many changes and is now a grown-up woman, but like her creator she keeps young and alert. And fiercly independent!
The story is great and the investigation, the twists and inevitable confrontations too. You get sucked into Sharon's life, her office on the pier in San Francisco under the bridge, her employees and their different problems and charasteristics. It's not easy being a boss and a skilled operator at the same time! And at the very end of the book, Muller allows herself to please us in a romantic way... Delicious.
So why the missing fifth star? Well, that is due to one thing and one thing only: I can't help but feel that there is more to Muller than she lets us see.She does not dwell on sadistic violence, thanks for that!, but in my opinion she doesn't explore everything that is explorable either. She has the brains and wits and life experience for it, I'm sure. I'd like to see a little more authority and recklessness. So anchors away, Muller!
As a bonus, the book contains chapters of Cape Perdido, soon released, and they certainly pique my interest.
My recommendation is: Read The Dangerous Hour! New reader or old fan - you'll love it.

Book Description
Lilka Trzcinska was fourteen years old when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. The daughter of an architect, Lilka was a high school student at the time. When schools were closed by the occupier, she, along with her siblings, continued their education in secret classes, and joined the Polish Home Army - the secret resistance force.
Lilka and her family were arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and sent to the political prison Pawiak, then to Auschwitz. There, Lilka's mother died and her younger sister was sent off to another camp. The rest of the family was put to work in the camp building offices. After being transported to a number of other camps (in one instance by a way of a three-day march), the three sisters were reunited in 1945, and shortly thereafter liberated by the British. Lilka later went to Italy to continue her education, moving to Canada in 1948.
The Labyrinth of Dangerous Hours is the memoir of a survivor. Lilka Trzcinska-Croydon narrates her adolescence and that of her sisters and brother in a way that binds poetry and history together seamlessly. It describes the strength of the family ties and solidarity that help them emerge from their horrific ordeal with their dignity intact.
As many as 150,000 Polish political prisoners were taken during the war, half of whom died in the camps. This memoir is a testament to their struggle.
Customer Reviews:
A Moving Memoir of WWII.......2007-05-12
The book title, The Labyrinth of Dangerous Hours, is a line taken from a poem, one of many that the author was inspired to write by her experiences during WWII. These poems are seamlessly integrated within the narrative, and serve as an emotional conduit into the heart and mind of the author.
The narrative is not chronological, and often the account of the author's experiences in Auschwitz is interrupted by flashbacks to the times before the war, when Lilka and her sisters and friends were still happy and free. The transitions are well handled, and perfectly placed, as when a certain person appears in the camp, someone whose history and relationship to the sisters need to be explored and explained.
The poems are all beautifully written, many infused with characters from Greek mythology. Even though some deal with war-time atrocities, hope and beauty somehow prevail, filtered through Lilka's innocent young eyes and mind. Throughout their horrendous ordeal, the sisters' bond held them together, both in body and in spirit. Their survival is a testament to their love and devotion to one another, and the triumph of innocence, dignity, and inner beauty over the unspeakable atrocities and depravities perpetrated by human beings upon each other in the name of war.
The Labyrinth of Dangerous Hours is a chronicle of a young girl's living nightmare as she takes on the part of Ariadne, trying to find her way out of `this labyrinth of dangerous hours' that were the years of horror during WWII.

Good Anthology !!!.......2004-04-11
On The Edge:3 Novels in1 by Heather Graham was a really good anthology. I enjoy books like this one. I am such a bookworm! The characters were great !!!
3 enjoyable stories........2003-08-24
These 3 stories were fairly short but readers are not left feeling short changed. The characters felt real and the action was fast paced.
I recommend reading this book. It has romance and mystery, and a cast of secondary characters that makes me feel like perhaps there will be a sequel to some of the stories.
Fun for the sun........2003-07-05
This book contains three (not two) enchanting tales of romantic suspense that are just perfect for light summer reading.
In the first entry by Heather Graham, Kit Delaney returns to the home she was born in and the family she is estranged from after the untimely death of her beloved father. There she begins a relationship with David Moore an enigmatic member of the household whose purposes are not entirely clear to her. She also engenders the enmity of at least one of her relatives -all of whom are afraid she will cheat them out of their rightful inheritance. The question is how far they will go to get Kit out of the picture and wether David can or will come to her rescue.
In "Shelter Island" the second tale, by Carla Neggers, Dr.Antonia Winter believes she is being stalked. She is afraid to ask for help because of the repercussions that a false alarm might have on her medical career and on the political aspirations of her new suitor, Hank Callahan. When she secretly retreats to an old cottage, belonging to a friend, on Shelter Island she is followed by Hank and by her stalker. Who will get to her first?
The last story, bySharon Sala, "Capsized",is myfavorite. Kelly Sloan is a DEA agent in an undercover operation that goes sour when a released prisoner whom she put away recognizes her. After three days of torture she manages to escape and swim to shore in Texas where she is rescued by Quinn McCord, a Texas Ranger with problems of his own. Together they must outwit the drug kingpin who has offered a two million dollar reward for Kelly's murder, in time for Kelly to testify against Dominic Ortega. The sparks fly in this tale of love and revenge.
These three tales are a good value for light, fun summer reading.
Absolutely great romantic suspense anthology.......2003-07-03
"Bougainvillea" by Heather Graham. Almost two decades ago her mother drowned. Her father never explained why, but he left their Bougainvillea home and never returned. With his recent death, his daughter Katherine "Kit" Delaney goes back to the family home. There she meets David Moore, a friend from her childhood. As they fall in love, Kit's tragic past catches up to her present fueled further by her doubts about whose side her beloved is on.
"Shelter Island" by Carla Neggers. Dr. Antonia Winter feels someone is stalking her. Not wanting to hurt her boyfriend's run for the senate with unsubstantiated stories, Antonia decides to leave for Shelter Island for awhile. However, Hank Callahan would rather not be a politician if he must give up his beloved Antonia. With a hurricane coming and a stalker following Antonia, Hank has his work cut out for him if he wants to keep her safe.
"Capsized" by Sharon Sala. In Mexico, DEA Agent Kelly Sloan realizes her cover is blown, which means she needs to escape before Ortega disposes of her in his malevolent manner. She manages to get to the sea, but drifts for three days before being found by Texas Ranger Quinn McCord. As she recovers her strength she and her male nurse fall in love, but Ortega and his in-law Gruber need her dead.
All three tales are taut romantic suspense thrillers that will please sub-genre fans except for the fact that readers will know each one could have been a stand-alone full-length novel.

Customer Reviews:
Back in print at last.......2005-12-25
Matadora was the hardest to find of the series until the last few years and an increase in used book postings online.
The three first published books of the "Matadora" series are a seamless tale of martial arts, politics, spirituality, and psych warfare told in a lean pulp style. "The 97th Step" is the later written prologue to the story and is not as lean.
I am not a martial arts reader but this series blew me away and I paid a premium to get some of the originally hard-to-find paperbacks like this one.
The writing is adult and contains sex although it is not gratuitous. If you are scared of sex and have not read pulp adventures before be warned.
This book tells the story of a lesbian fighter being drawn into a group opposed to the increasingly tyrannical and corrupt government. You will want to read "The Machiavelli Interface" immediately after this and pick up at least "The Man Who Never Missed" and probably "The 97th Step" of the others in the series. The books after "The Machiavelli Interface" ("The Albino Knife", "Black Steel", "Brother Death") are not as important or as good.
The politics in the series give a timely warning on democracies becoming corrupt but really this is a straight adventure series with the unique perspective for me of martial arts philosophy. File this under pulp adventure writing above the genre while telling the stories of a few individuals setting out to topple an evil empire.
Couldn't Put It Down!.......2005-09-03
I started the Matador series with this book and HAD to have all the others. It's fast paced, well written and has a Black WOMAN as the main character. When was the last time you read a book with all of these qualities. Dirisha takes no prisoners in love or war. Yes, there is some sex but it's not X-rated and last I heard sex is a normal part of life. This book has killing, too and that should be (but isn't) more offensive than sex.
The series is a great read as is anything by Steve Perry, who has become one of my favorite authors. :)
Great book as a part of the series.......2005-05-25
Matadora seems to follow the Man Who Never Missed rather indirectly, with the main characters following in the footsteps of that man, Emile Antoon Khadaji. The setting is a unique mix of science fiction and martial arts of the kind found in the best Hong-Kong action films. The universe is deep and consistent, and revealed expertly.
Dirisha, a martial arts master searching for more in life, finds a school training the best bodyguards in the galaxy. It also has a few political goals. Matadora's plot flows well but ends in a very perfunctory way without actually resolving any of the major plot arcs, obviously to flow into the next book. For the most part, this is not a disadvantage. Note also, there are several explicit sex scenes, one of them homosexual.
Lastly, the book is a very fast read. I finished it in about two hours. Negative points for the low value for cost and the ending.
Sci-Fi Martial Warfare at its BEST!.......2004-04-11
Matadora picks up where the first novel in the series, The Man Who Never Missed left off, Dirisha Zuri, the lovely and deadly former bouncer of the Jade Flower is walking the infamous Musashi Flex, an underworld challenge of martial combat that allows killing, when she is pulled back into her former employer's mysterious web of rebellion and is given an offer she will not refuse: the chance to train in Emille's secret style of Martial Combat, and to become one of the empire's most sought after and feared bodyguards a MATADOR.
Rate this book XXX for explicit sex scenes.......2003-02-09
I found this book not only boring, but absolutely not suitable for anyone under 18 because of the (to me) gratuitis and explicit sex scenes involving, woman/woman, man/woman threesome, etc. I absolutely had no expectation of this when I began reading. Also, the book is very boring, very little in the way of any "action", mostly a lot of (I presume) the author's philosophy. I skimmed through to the end, in hopes of something interesting occuring, but to no avail. I will not buy any of his books in the future!!
Book Description
With seriocomic tone, these elliptical lyrics reveal illusions and exclusions at the heart of America's global narrative of economic "progress," and the attendant loss of cultural identity and memory. At the same time, Matadora challenges traditional Fillipina gender norms, beginning with the title which feminizes a word and profession traditionally masculine.
New York (Sweet and Sour Sauce)
I (Asian girl) was eating pasta with a dancer (Asian girl) last night in front of the Asian-American tirade. She quoted a book of 144,000 blank pages and she said, sometimes do you feel crazy? I was biting off my chicken. I said let's go through an exercise.
Someone is sleeping very peacefully in a bed next to you. Who is this person?
A sculptor (from LA he said just visiting) listened to us. He said I'm working on a 50 ft. bamboo thing. He said you should come by.
"Early in Sarah Gambito's book, we learn that 'You cannot be in two places at once.' In fact, the personality presented in these poems (they are personal poems; that is to say, they have their own unique and consistent personality) seems to have come from Elsewhere, on the way to Everywhere."-Keith Waldrop
Sarah Gambito holds degrees from The University of Virginia and The Creative Writing Program at Brown University. Her poems have appeared in such journals as The Iowa Review, The Antioch Review, The New Republic, Quarterly West and Fence.

Honest and Beautiful.......2005-02-01
Gambito manages to be witty and fierce, yet vulnerable; passionate and yet sad. Her words are beautiful and painfully honest. This is an amazing book from one very talented writer.

Book Description
Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose is a brilliant mystery set in a fictitious medieval monastery. The text is rich with literary, historical, and theoretical references that make it eminently re-readable. The Key makes each reading fuller and more meaningful by helping the interested reader not merely to read but also to understand Eco's masterful work. Inspired by pleas from friends and strangers, the authors, each trained in Classics, undertook to translate and explain the Latin phrases that pepper the story. They have produced an approachable, informative guide to the book and its setting--the middle ages. The Key includes an introduction to the book, the middle ages, Umberto Eco, and philosophical and literary theories; a useful chronology; and reference notes to historical people and events.
The clear explanations of the historical setting and players will be useful to anyone interested in a general introduction to medieval history.
Adele J. Haft is Associate Professor of Classics, Hunter College, City University of New York. Jane G. White is chair of the Department of Languages, Dwight Englewood School. Robert J. White is Professor of Classics and Oriental Studies, Hunter College, City University of New York.

The Key to the Name of the Rose.......2003-06-18
After reading The Name of the Rose with few helps, discovering this book was quite wonderful. It goes into adaquate detail with the historical background, and I found the translations to be good and very helpful. A must for those trying the novel for the first time or for those who felt the lack of endnotes frustrating. A wonderful suppplement.
The Key to "The Name of the Rose".......2002-09-12
The Key to "The Name of the Rose" by Adele J. Haft, Jane G. White, and Robert J. White is a wonderful little book. When was the last time you used your Latin that you had in High School? You say, you never had Latin... well how do you expect to solve the clues that Brother William of Baskerville in "The Name of the Rose" gets.
Well, the answer is in this little tome as it includes translations of all of the Non-English passages making you as "smart" as Brother William. This book furthers your experience when reading "The Name of the Rose" as you now can decode the juicy clues. Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" is about crimes in a medieval abbey and the obsession of it monks with heresies, apocalyptic visions, and forbidden knowledge.
This "Key" is a delightful guide to the phrases and bizarre characters and has mirthful anecdotes that you're sure to enjoy and you'll solve the mystery of the seven deaths as fast as Brother William and enjoy the intrigue in doing so.
excellent resource for artists.......2002-03-20
i am hoping to do an intricate performance art piece based on the novel "the name of the rose;" however, many of the lush details and layers were lost on me, because i am not a historian or a scholar well-versed in semiotics... the task is still daunting, but i feel more confident having this "hint book" to fill me in on the background information. it renders the novel much more accessible to a lay person, and makes the story even MORE fascinating than it already is. i suggest that anyone reading "the name of the rose" should have a copy of this to help them along... also, there is a text that does this same task for dante's "divine comedy" (dante has a large influence on the novel, so reading dante will help the reader to understand the apocolyptic attitudes of the characters). joseph gallagher wrote "a modern reader's guide to dante's 'the divine comedy'" which you may also find helpful.
A must-have for Name of the Rose neophytes.......2001-08-06
I'm enjoying Umberto Eco's NAME OF THE ROSE, but I don't understand so much as a tenth of the Latin. Before I reached page 200, I came to the sinking conclusion that I was missing out on something. I checked KEY TO NAME OF THE ROSE out at my local library, but soon realized that I needed to own my own copy to keep beside my copy of NAME OF THE ROSE. This book is a God-send for those NAME OF THE ROSE fans like me who lack a reading knowledge of Latin. Having other scholars' comments at hand really helps. If you're intrigued by NAME OF THE ROSE, but just don't get it, buy this book!
A very helpful companion volume.......1999-11-10
This is a very good guide to The Name of the Rose. Not perfect, but good. The non-English translations are very helpful, and beat sitting next to a Latin dictionary. The biographical information for historical characters is very good too. My only beef about this is that it doesn't address the historical backdrop of the novel well enough: the Renaissance of the previous century, the conflicts in the Church at the time, and the looming disasters of the 14th century between the time the novel takes place and the time the narrator lays the tale down. Get this volume if you're going to read the book. But don't rely strictly on this.
