McSweeney's began as a small collection of work rejected by other magazines, but it soon began to publish pieces primarily written for the journal, and to attract some of the finest writers in the country. Contributors to Best of McSweeney's, Volume One include Jonathan Lethem, Glen David Gold, A. M. Homes, David Foster Wallace, Dave Eggers, Amanda Davis, George Saunders, Paul Collins, and William Vollmann, as well as many talented newcomers. Stories included here have been selected for The O. Henry Prize Stories and The Best American Short Stories, and one was performed in a regional musical theater.

Let me lay it out for you:

McSweeneys is, hands down, the greatest literary magazine going today. Every issue is unique and beautifully published and all the best writers in english are represented from artsy hip authors (David Foster Wallace, Stephen Dixon, Lydia Davis, etc.) to mainstream best sellers (Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, etc.)

This book is a collection of their favorite work from the first 10 issues. If you hvaen't read the first 10 issues, go and buy this. The first 10 are pretty rare and go for 100 dollars or more on ebay. But luckily you can get a good chunk of the stories in this thick and excellent collection.

3 out of 5 stars Why do good men end up with females like her?.......2006-02-14

Ok, you have to give Jo Beverly for actually writing something a little different from the norm of romance novels. Usually its the guy who cheats (like Catherine Coulter likes to write about) and they end up forgiving one another and so forth.

So, you can't really say she's a whore or anything (double standards and all). BUT, the problem lies in that Jo Beverly doesn't really make it clear, or her reasoning isn't strong enough. Throughout the whole book, I could not but help feel sorry for the hero! He deserves better than a petty wife. If he was abusive or just cruel, I could understand her actions/reasonings. Again, I expect my heroine to have a higher sense of morals than that.

I'm frustrated and hurt for the hero and just happy I don't have the book to remind me.

1 out of 5 stars This was my first book by this author and it is definitley my last!.......2006-01-11

First off I totally hated the heroine, in my romances I like the heroine to actually love the hero. No such luck in this book and the reason for committing adultrey was pretty lame too it was something about hating God, pulease and then throughout the whole book she doesn't even say she is sorry for god's sake! She says nothing about it actually although you have to wonder if she loves her husband at all I mean she is always trying to save the guy she had before her husband came home. I hated this book. No let me not say I hated the whole book anyway for there was one redeeming quality about this book and that was the secondary romance of Aline and Raoul now why could they not have had a story all there own that was something that I was intresting in. For one you felt that they did love each other for in the book is says that he has not had another woman when he gets intrested in Aline. I just skipped through the Jehanne and Galeran parts (although I agree with another reviewer that he should have kicked her out on her a**!) Anyway the secondary romance was very good but the main romance plain sucked! this was my first romance by Jo Beverley and thank god I did not pay about 6 bucks for the thing(I checked it out at the library) anyway folks if you are intresting in true romance please skip this book you will be nothing but disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars Sooo disappointed.......2006-01-11

The heroine is weak. The betrayal is overwhelming. I just wanted Galeran to beat Jehanne and move on and find a more virtuos woman. He could do better than this slut. She doesn't even seem guilty! I'm so distraught over this storyline. I can't believe Jo Beverly wrote.

1 out of 5 stars a low point for Beverley.......2005-11-19

Jo Beverley is usually one of my favorites, a gold standard in the genre. I associate her with intelligence, sharp wit, historical accuracy...not to mention dreamy, sexy heroes and exciting, spicy plots.

But The Shattered Rose? It's not that she's abandoned historical accuracy, just that the wealth of detail that usually colors her novels so richly is absent here....in fact, the writing is unusually bland.

And while there's no sense in trying to imitate medieval speech, why - oh why! - is this book chock full of contemporary idiomatic speech that conveys attitudes and sentiments that would have been unfamiliar or impossible during the middle ages?

And the plot - and the characters - the last thing that I would have expected was a romance about an intelligent, strong-willed, independent woman who turns into a miserable, nasty shrew because she can't have children. I have had enough of romance novels about women who think their lives are ruined because they are barren. Especially when the author goes out of her way to create a hero who is understanding, sympathetic, and willing to look for alternate solutions!

I really appreciate the sincere love between the Jehanne and Galeran, and although it's clear that they have a lot of issues to work out, the novel has no forward momentum. It doesn't have that heart-stopping tension, it doesn't propel you forward with the looming fear that somehow, Jehanne and Galeran might be driven apart. No. From the beginning, it's pretty clear that Jehanne and Galeran will both do whatever is in their power to stay together and it's just a matter of how.

4 out of 5 stars A deeply moving story!.......2005-11-04

I have a feeling this is a more accurate tale of the times than many that are written - even the betrayel, the adultery and certainly the actions between Crown and Church. Such a very complicated sad story. Galeron who seems like such a good and decent man - spending 2 years in service fighting in Crusades to come home after a vow of celibacy while gone to a wife that has recently given birth and to his infant son who has died. And this becomes not just what Galeron wants, and how he is able to forgive and deal - it becomes a matter of the King, Bishops and of course the babies father. What Galeron has to go through to reclaim his wife and finally settle into his homeland again, is quite a sad, frustrating and detailed witnessing of the times. This was quite a compelling read - much more than just a romance novel. this book will grip you solidly between good and evil and mainly forgiveness and punishments. The secondary tale of Rauol - Galerons friend and warrior and the expected to be convert to the church, cousin Aline. Now there story was the romance novel - very heartfelt and sweet. Both stories are blended together perfectly by the expert pen of Beverely. The only reason not 5 stars is I prefer a little more romance in my books and always I like more sizzle!

    Product Description

Most science fiction seeks to excite and gratify the reader's sense of wonder. Jack McDevitt's hard SF novel Chindi both satisfies and examines this sense of wonder, which inspires not only SF readers and writers, but every explorer and scientist who seeks to understand the universe.

In Chindi, humanity has expanded to the stars and found very few other intelligent races--all but one extinct, with the survivor none too impressive. Humanity has resigned itself to being alone. Then an alien satellite is found, orbitting a distant star and beaming an unreadable signal across the galaxy. Academy starship Captain Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins finds herself piloting a motley crew of eccentrics (one an ex-lover) from the idealistic, ridiculed Contact Society, seeking the signal's destination. Their quest turns deadly as it takes them far beyond the borders of explored space to an impossible planetary system--and a vast and terrifying alien artifact.

Chindi is an ambitious, exciting, big-idea hard-SF novel that ventures successfully into Rendezvous with Rama territory, and beyond. The sequel to The Engines of God and Deepsix, Chindi leaves some unanswered questions for McDevitt's forthcoming fourth novel. --Cynthia Ward

              Book Description

The universe has been explored--and humanity has all but given up on finding other intelligent life. Then an alien satellite orbiting a distant star sends out an unreadable signal. Is it the final programmed gasp of an ancient, long-dead race? Or the first greeting of an undiscovered life form?

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This is a Priscilla Hutchins novel. A weird communication is picked up
in deep space. The people that want to go and investigate decide that
they need a qualified pilot when they take their mission out.

So, she takes the job, leaving her mundane commerce activities behind.

We have an amateur research society and professional crew conflict,
as well as investigating alien bits and pieces. All quite readable.

4 out of 5 stars Hutch returns to pilot a new expedition beyond explored space in search of an alien civilization.......2007-08-27

A few years after the exploits of Academy pilot Captain Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchins on the doomed planet Deepsix, a satellite beaming an indecipherable signal into space is found orbiting a distant neutron star. Without any clues to its origin or purpose, the Contact Society, a wealthy group of eccentric SETI types, contracts the academy to provide them a Superluminal ship to search for the alien culture that left it behind. Hutch is assigned the duty and new adventure begins in the third installment of this series (preceded by *Engines of God* and *Deepsix*) by Jack McDevitt.

The search that starts with the satellite, takes them beyond explored space in the Orion Arm of the Milky Way and to an impossible star system that defies logic. There they discover an enormous alien space craft, which seems to pay them no attention as they try to make contact. So like any good adventurous souls, they break in to look around; there they discover what appears to be an archive of hundreds, possibly thousands, of alien lifeforms and civilizations.

Life other books in this series, adventure leads to trouble and a daring rescue sequences is needed to save the day. This seems to have angered some of McDevitt's fans, but not me; I continually am engrossed by his combination of intellectual science fiction that examines the universe we live in and high adventure and daring-do. If I had one complaint with *Chindi*, it would be the lack of character development in this installment. Usually, I like the depth at which McDevitt explores his characters; but, with this book, only Hutch seems to get any further development and growth. The rest of the cast is a bit "typecast".

And for those wanting to learn more about the fate of the galaxy and the impending doom of the Omega Clouds, you will get a little development on that front as well.

3 out of 5 stars Spectacular imagery, but unsatisfying........2007-07-16

This is a book I really wanted to love, and I thought I was going to for the first half. It starts slow, with the promise of answering a big question (whether there's currently an intelligent space faring race for humanity to talk to). There's a giant scavenger hunt at the beginning which builds the excitement for the reader as things seem always 'just about to be revealed'. Amazing vistas are discovered, and then the apparent main event occurs halfway through the book. Things will surely be explained and the conclusion will have to be spectacular, right? Um, no. As another reviewer has mentioned, the book takes a sharp left turn here, changing from a 'galaxy sized questions' type of book to a 'save the man in distress' book.

Almost no questions raised by the book are answered, and in fact questions continue to be raised almost right up until the end. Having read a bit further in the series (the first parts of "Omega") it's apparent he likes to answer the previously unanswered questions, or at least refer to them, in later books, but it can be frustrating for the reader.

The characters are intriguing, particularly Bill and Hutch (the ship's AI and the ship's pilot), but the rest of them are an odd mix of almost intriguing, completely forgettable, and often completely illogical (to the extent of showing no self preservation).

One thing I noticed was a strong similarity in feel between this book and "Seeker" (the first one of McDevitt's that I'd read). It feels like a mystery where the characters reach what appears to be a dead end, only to suddenly remember something else, or have a new clue drop into their laps.

I had originally planned to give this book 4 stars, felt that it fits 3 1/2 stars better, and then compared it to some of the better books I've read. I'm glad I read it, but the last half felt like a slog and a letdown, and I probably wouldn't recommend it to friends over some others.

4 out of 5 stars Following the Wild Goose.......2007-02-20

Chindi (2002) is the third SF novel in the Hutch series, following Deepsix. In the previous volume, Hutch steered the lander near the scoop end of the skyhook, but found that a rock shower had closed the opening and dislodged the rails. She couldn't fly the lander inside, so Hutch approached as close as she could and had the others jump to the net. Randy tied a tether to Hutch's wrist before he jumped. Since she was the last out, the lander had veered away and only Randy's grip on the tether kept her from falling to her death. Never Let Go became an immortal motto after the rescue of the Deepsix Four.

In this novel, the Benjamin L. Martin discovers a radio transmission coming from the vicinity of VV651107, a neutron star. The AI records the signal, but is not able to reacquire it after returning to that portion of its orbit. Another survey vessel later discovers a similar signal coming into the neutron star from an acute angle to the other beam.

Elsewhere, Hutch is diverted to a survey station located amidst a nebular cloud condensing into a star. The mission director is adamant that the mission is crucial to understanding the origins of stars and that the danger is minimal. Now he asks that a vessel be assigned to the station just in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

Needless to say, the star has already ignited its nuclear fires and a huge flare is approaching the station. Now the evacuation becomes not only necessary, but urgent. However, Hutch discovers that survey has only provided sufficient capacity for the staff; no one has considered the presence of station dependents.

Although another vessel reaches the station in time to take the extra people, Hutch is determined to submit her resignation. Then the Operations Chief who had failed to consider the presence of station dependents is being awarded a special honor for his foresightedness. Hutch is going to be out of there as soon as possible.

Nonetheless, Sylvia Virgil, the Director of Operations, talks Hutch into one last mission, taking representatives of the Contact Society to VV651107 to investigate the signals. The society will provide the vessel, the City of Memphis, if survey will lend them a pilot. Hutch agrees to this one last mission.

In this story, two parties are sent out on similar missions. The Memphis scans for more signals near the neutron star, but another group on the Condor investigates the destination of the outgoing signals. They find a world that had once held intelligent life before blowing themselves into radioactive ruin. The major find, however, is an active stealthed satellite orbiting this world.

The Condor party takes the satellite on board to examine it, but the ship soon is destroyed by an internal explosion. The Memphis quickly heads toward the other star and finds debris and bodies. However, they also discover another stealthed satellite and then a third in orbit around the planet. Later, they find another trio of satellites acting as a relay aimed at another star.

The Memphis follows the radio beams from star to star, discovering unusual situations and objects at each location. Other ships are dispatched to investigate their finds. Finally, they discover the end of their chase in the Chindi.

This story is a study in foolishness and death. Time after time Hutch tries to convince her passengers to wait, yet they charge out and some die. The next time Hutch tries to hold them back, the survivors insist that they must go on because the dead would expect it of them.

Highly recommended for McDevitt fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of high adventure, sudden hazards and frustrated lovers.

              -Arthur W. Jordin

3 out of 5 stars Modern Golden Age Science Fiction .......2006-09-10

As other reviewers have noted, Jack McDevitt's Chindi has an old-fashioned feel about it. From the spare, stripped-down prose to the classic plot involving xenoarcheology, it could have been produced by Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke on one of their less inspired days, because, although the novel is good, it is certainly not great. For the first half of Chindi, McDevitt successfully builds a sense of wonder and mystery through his account of a SETIesque expedition to look for intelligent life. The Retreat on a distant planet is particularly fascinating. Unfortunately, the novel never follows through on this initial promise in the second half, but instead drops the alien archaeology and gets diverted into a long (if exciting and scientifically interesting) rescue mission. Science fiction is a genre of ideas and authors need not feel that their readers will be bored if they do not have frequent action scenes. If McDevitt had stuck with his initial strong idea and carried it through to the end of the novel, it would have been far better for it.

What is textual criticism? Why is it necessary? How should it be done? At eighty pages (of large type), Black's introduction to New Testament textual criticism can be read in a single sitting and provides answers to these questions.

Black introduces the reader (any reader) to the various manuscripts underlying the New Testament and presents the different perspectives on textual criticism. As stated in the preface, "this volume attempts to make the findings of scholarship accessible to a wide readership. Nothing in this book is taken for granted. Every term, every problem, is explained clearly, concisely, and 'from scratch'." I certainly found this to be true. The first two chapters discuss the need for textual criticism and the different approaches to the task. The final chapter provides a few examples to help the reader understand some of the issues faced by textual critics as they try to determine the original Greek text behind the New Testament. The bibliography gives you a number of additional reading suggestions to move beyond "A Concise Guide".

If you are simply a lay person as I am, reading this book will allow you to have a better understanding of why some Bibles occassionally offer footnotes containing alternate translations. Black's book will also give you a better understanding of the history behind the New Testament scriptures and how they have been preserved from the apostles' time to our own. If there is a drawback to the book, it would probably be that you may find the price to be a bit high for such a short book.

If you don't want to go any further than an introductory understanding of textual criticism, then this is probably a great book for you. (The author also suggests that it could be useful as a "refresher" for those already familiar with textual criticism.) If you are looking to get involved in a more thorough understanding of the debated approaches to textual criticism, there are likely other books out there that would better satisfy that desire - though they are probably not concise introductions.

4 out of 5 stars a valuable tool for Greek students.......2000-11-22

New Testament Textual Criticism: A Concise Guide, written by David Alan Black, is indeed what the title details. Written compactly and with little frivolous information, David Black gives not only the experienced, but also the novice greek student a solid foundation upon which to base a practice of textual criticism. A unique feature in this remarkably short work, the material given is contained as much in appendixed form and bibliographical information as in traditional text. A wonderful guide for further scholarship, the author entices the reader to further explore the original text of the New Testament.
