Book Description
Stephen Hunter has chosen the backdrop of the chaotic and cruel Spanish Civil War to weave a classic tale of espionage and counterespionage. Julian Raines was one of the first Englishmen to volunteer for the international brigade in Spain. The British Secret Service suspect that the flamboyant Raines was recruited for the KGB by the Bolsheviks during his student days at Oxford and send Robert Florry, a struggling young writer to Spain after Raines with orders to eliminate him. Florry was an old school chum to Raines and had every reason to hate him. The British are not alone on Raines' trail. The ruthless Communist leader in Barcelona believes that the identity of the double agent conceals a powerful and profitable secret. It is a novel that constantly surprises.
Customer Reviews:
If it ain't Swagger, it ain't fun!.......2006-04-03
Like "the master sniper" and "the second Saladin" this book is no page-turner and lacks growing suspense and a complex plot. I was really disappointed.
It seems as if Stephen Hunter's books are not on the same high level if the main character is not Bob Lee Swagger.
As loong as Bob Lee Swagger is in it you can buy any of the books. But leave this one on the shelf.
Sangria Anyone?.......2005-02-11
Originally titled Spanish Gambit. I picked this one up after reading Hot Springs, and just let me say that probably one of the big reasons I bought it was because it is set during the Spansih Civil War, which is one of my favorite conflicts in History, as well as I just love Spanish history and culture, having traveled there once. Anyway I liked the conflict the two main characters, with Soviets and Nazis thrown for good measure. Hot Springs is by my opinion the best book Hunter has written. Pick up Spainish Gambit or Tapestry of Spies they're the same book, you'll enjoy it.
Don't buy this one - wait for his next book.......2001-02-03
Unlike the other Stephen Hunter books which I picked up and couldn't put down, this one I put down and couldn't pick up. Finally, on a long business trip, this was the last bit of reading material I had left.
In this book, there are too many characters and plots going on at the same time, and none are handled well. There are bits in the book that have no relevence later, and I wonder why they were added except to increase word count.
I do not recommend that you buy this book. Instead, buy "Hot Spring" or like me, wait until it is released in paperback, as I thoroughly enjoyed the series about Earl and Bob Lee Swagger
Hunter can and has done better........2000-12-04
I have read several books by Stephen Hunter and I fear this is the worst. It did not grab me by the throat and cause me to not want to put it down as some of his others have. I stayed confused a big part of the time and really did not want to finish it but his other books had been so good I kept thinking it would better. I feel now that I wasted my time. Robert Flory, I suppose is the hero but it could be Julian Raines. So many people and so many things going on. The ending was really no surprise. Everybody has bad days or weeks, I guess or hope, this has been a rare bad write for Stephen Hunter. If this is a first read for Hunter it may be your last.
The chessgame.......2000-11-05
In fact, I'm asking for help. Can anyone tell me the notation of the chessgame Levitsky played at that tournament he won? It seems that the book doesn't have the whole game, at least it doesn't play out for me - can anyone help with that opening with the lonely pawn? Please email me... Thanks.

Emotionally troubled characters find each other.......2007-06-12
This book features two emotionally stunted characters looking to find meaning outside of their usual casual (and abundant) sexual encounters. I found the plot somewhat unbelievable in the way they kept just running into each other until they could no longer avoid a relationship, but it did keep my interest.
In my opinion, Ronica's writing is a cut above most of the gay authors I've read, and I found her book to have an entertaining and erotic storyline.
Chance Meetings.......2007-05-21
Tragedy has caused the main character to keep people at arm's length, but a meeting with a cop who pulls her over changes her life forever.
Steamy.......2007-02-05
This is the 1st book that I have read by Ronica Black. The two main characters are so similar in some of thier actions I found myself having to look back to see which one was speaking. However, I did enjoy the characters and the development. If there were a sequel to this I would read it just to see where the characters have gone. This is a good summer time (or wish it were summer) book.
Coming to terms with real life...........2006-07-28
is what Chan Brogan finds difficult. Yes, she's had some tragedy in her life. She never lets anybody get close. She rides her bike to relieve stress and her best pal is her brother.
During one of these stress relieving moments her grandmother can't stand, Chan and her brother are speeding out of control and get pulled over by Officer Monroe (Sarah). Chan is obnoxious and belligerent to Monroe, but they both seem to like what they see.
Monroe and Brogan both have lit a fire in each other and have on again and off again moments.
Black makes life good.
Couldn't put it down.
Great Second Book.......2006-07-26
Unlike so many authors who falter after a great first book, Black has not faltered here.
Black has ably written two characters who bring a lot of baggage in the door with them. The question is whether each of them will be able to deal with their problems without destroying either themselves or their budding relationship.
The characters are well written and Black spends enough time with each of them to make them sympathetic and likable. While there no particular hint that the two may be seen again in future books, they are the kind of characters that any reader would be glad to see again and again.

Slow paced.......2001-06-23
Lauralee Johnston was an orphan of the Civil War, watching her mother die a violent death and assuming that her father had perished in the war, she had learned to take care of herself and to never trust any man. She trained as a nurse to work at a Veteran's hospital in hopes that someday she might speak with a man who knew her father and could tell her things that she never knew. Little did she know her world would be turned upside down.
Joe Dancing Cloud was a full blooded Cherokee living in the North Carolina Mountains helping his people move on after the destruction of the Civil War. He hopes to one day follow in his father's footsteps and become the proud Chief. Yet he can't help but wander when an old friend asks him for a favor.
Brought together by circumstances that rarely happen in real life Lauralee and Dancing Cloud not only have families in common but the same red haired enemy who made his way around during the civil war. I found the romance to be great at first but then I felt it moved too quickly, throwing two people who barely knew each other, and practically forgetting Lauralee's fears, thinking she can get over them in twenty-four hours. I think the book seemed to drag on and frankly wasn't worth the few dollars I put out for it.

Customer Reviews:
Wild Abandon.......2001-05-31
Wild Abandon, Welcome To God's Palm begins with Thayer Abbott and her father moving from their old home in Chicago to the strangely "perfect" town of Abandon, Oregon. Thayer is still getting over her mother's death, so she doesn't like the idea of moving at all. Soon after Thayer moves in, she meets Park, a girl her age who shows her the ropes of the new town. Things get interesting when Thayer meets Amslyn, the "leader" of the popular group in Abandon-you know, there is one at every high school. Through the people, places, and strange happenings in the town of Abandon, Thayer comes to terms with herself and her new life. I ordered this book by accident, but decided to give it a try. As it turns out, this was one of my favorites! Also, it keeps you interested and is very exciting, but it's age appropriate, too. Anyone over the age of eleven would understand and enjoy this book. It is different from most books, but it hits a sweet place as you're reading it. In fact, I'm getting ready to order the next book in the series....
An Excellent Teaching Tool.......2000-04-15
As a teacher of the seventh grade, I have found that the story's subtle emphasis of honoring oneself verses conformity to be an exceptionally effective theme for discussion with my students. This book entices the imagination in ways that I had forgotten even existed. My students and I were sorry for the story to end, and wanted to stay in Abandon to see what would happen next! I will definitely use the whole series in my classroom curriculum.
Top of my list!.......2000-02-27
The characters in Wild Abandon are totally cool, I really liked Park. I'm a fan for life!
An Amazing Adventure.......2000-02-23
This book is full of imagination, magical moments, and the most interesting details. Extremely well written and very fun to read. I really enjoyed Wild Abandon and think of it often!

It's About Time........1999-07-29
We Presbyterians needed a book which conveys our tradition and guides us in prayer. This book is wonderful! I can see the hand of providence (how Presbyterian of me!). Its major sources are The Book of Common Prayer, The Book of Common Order, Ecumenical Prayer Books, and "New" material. The book has given order to my prayer life and infused my devotions with meaning.
The Pastor's book review for monthly church newsletter.......1998-12-01
I have committed myself to the spiritual discipline of writing meaningful letters to friends; yet, I just could not give up the daily practice of intentional, guided, prayer. In the past five or six months I read a devotional reflection, scripture, and prayers, both written and private. I then used these prayers and scripture as a type of mantra to reflect on a theme for the day. After this has concluded I would clear my mind and wait for God to speak. There is a specific small leather covered book I have used to recite guided prayers and Scriptures. The Book of Common Worship: Daily Prayer has been an invaluable tool in my discipline of daily prayer. The Book of Common Worship: Daily Prayer has a number of beneficial tools for a daily prayer practice. The book has provided an outline for Morning and Evening Prayer time, with alternative texts for special seasons and festivals within the church year. The book even provides a section for prayers at mealtime. The book breaks down the Psalms into those shared at Corporate Worship and then ones that can be used in private reflection. Prayer Litanies are provided on a number of subjects of need. The Book of Common Worship: Daily Prayer concludes with a helpful listing of the daily lectionary for the church year. I have enjoyed the process of learning the Psalms in an ongoing spiritual process. I have explained on numerous occasions the difference between reading Scripture, and using Scripture as a communal discipline of prayer. Reading a psalm and then saying the same verse over and over until I know it by heart allows me to internalize the message. Then I allow the passage float between my conscious and unconscious mind in silence. Once in a while a spark of divine recognition takes place in the directed silent communion with God through prayer. This book is a stepping off place in your daily prayer life. I recommend this book for the holidays because of it's a gift of prayer. The leather cover, with gold trim, is elegant while remaining affordable. How many Christmas gifts have the potential to change lives. If you decide you want the Book of Common Worship: Daily Prayer for yourself or someone else, give the church office a call and Jane can give you the number for Cokesbury publishing, so you can order in time for Christmas or find it on the web at www.amazon.com. Let me know how this resource influences your daily prayer life. Rev. Scott Paczkowski, First Presbyterian Church, Merrillville, IN

Keeping Silence: Christian Practices for Entering Stillness
ASIN: 0819217840 |
Book Description
"As far as the Daily Office is concerned, the current edition of the American Book of Common Prayer is underemployed. Most faithful church people seem to know and use only certain limited portions of it or assume it is the special domain of clergy and monastics. This is not the original intent of the Office. Using it in this way is like using a new automobile exclusively as a water heater. It can be used this way, but it would be a bizarre restriction. Very few Christians seem to think of the Daily Office as something intended for all baptized persons, but this is actually its nature and purpose." - from the Introduction
The discipline of praying the Daily Office has fallen out of practice in recent years, even while many Americans seek to deepen their spiritual lives. The Discipline of the Daily Office is for all Christians, Episcopalian or otherwise, who seek a deeper relationship with God and scripture through a regular daily practice. In accessible language, C.W. McPherson explores the history, theology, and spirituality inherent in Morning and Evening Prayer, as well as the Minor Offices. He also provides practical instructions about the Office to help those who wish to use these prayers thoughtfully. This book is an excellent resource for anyone who wishes to understand this ancient tradition more completely.
The Rev. C.W. McPherson has spent twenty years in parish ministry and is also a spiritual director, retreat leader, and a mentor for deacons and priests in formation. He teaches theology and church history. He is a published poet and the author of Understanding Faith: An Exploration of Christian Theology. He lives in New Rochelle, New York.
Customer Reviews:
A much needed manual.......2004-07-28
This comprehesive little book answers just about every question one could have about the Daily Office of the Episcopal Church-how to pray it, it's history, and theology. Especially helpful are the series of actual questions asked and answered at the end of the book.
An increasing number of people seem to be praying the Daily Office, and there's a real need for a guide on how to do so, since most churches in the U.S. no longer offer it on Sundays or during the week, and at first glance it might appear to be complicated.
I've been praying the Daily Office for over ten years, and wish this book had existed when I fist began. It has increased my appreciation for the Office and my knowledge of it, I've given it as a gift, and heartily recommend it.
Required Reading.......2001-08-31
In 147 pages McPherson covers the evolution of the Daily Offices with remarkable clarity. The book is an easy read and covers the Morning Prayer office in beautiful detail. I suggest that it should be required reading for anyone new in the Episcopal Church.
Wow!.......2001-01-02
This is an awesome book. It is especially recommended for persons who are new to praying the Daily Office. It simplifies what might seem to some a daunting task, while at the same time suffusing the words of the Book of Common Prayer with great meaning both intellectually and emotionally. One comes away from finishing this book with new resolve and excitment about incorporating the Office into one's daily life.

Be at peace with morning prayer.......2000-05-03
As a newcomer to leading morning prayer I found this book invaluable in developing the understanding and confidence that I needed. During Lent I purchased multiple copies of this for my parish so that others would also feel empowered to lead morning or evening prayer. Fr. Webber concisely frames morning prayer in its historical context and provides valuable insights though the use of running commentary in a parallel page format throughout the text of the prayer service. By explaining the purpose of each component Fr. Webber removes the uncomfortable sense of not knowing why or if participation includes recitation of all of the various components that comprise morning prayer. After reading this book anyone should feel at peace in leading a morning or evening prayer service.
