Paradise Alley, Kevin Baker's follow-up to Dreamland, makes full use of his skills as a top historical researcher. Paradise Alley concerns a tumultuous moment in the record of the Civil War: the 1863 New York riots that followed President Lincoln's decision to create a draft. Baker refers to the street violence as one of the worst instances of civic unrest in American history. Yet one can't tell a compelling story with simple pronouncements. Baker gives us a handful of characters--fictional, yet emblematic--who lead readers through the dense weave of class, race, ambition, gender politics, and violence in mid-19th-century America. More importantly, Baker has that rare gift of establishing crucial links between the past and the present, of helping a reader understand that we live with the consequences of history. A hugely ambitious project, Baker wrestles with his responsibility to the overall vision as well as to many, many outstanding moments, and for the most part he gets the balance right. --Tom Keogh
Book Description
At the height of the Civil War, word spreads through the poorest quarters of New York City that a military draft is about to be implemented -- a draft from which any rich man's son can buy an exemption. The outrage this inspires escalates into the worst urban conflagration in American history.
Down in the waterfront slum of Paradise Alley, three women -- Deirdre Dolan O'Kane, Ruth Dove, and Maddy Boyle -- struggle with their private fears as they wait for the storm to descend upon them. Deirdre, devastated by the news that her husband, Tom, has been wounded at Gettysburg, must turn for comfort and aid to two women she has always judged as morally depraved -- Ruth, married to an ex-slave, and Maddy, a hard-living prostitute.
Kevin Baker's acclaimed masterpiece is an unforgettable portrait of three women who come together to protect their homes and families from the brutality of a city -- and a nation -- gone mad.

Paradise Alley.......2007-08-20
I have only jsut started reading this. The writing drags a bit, but the descriptions are good and make the story very alive. I was only disappointed by the school district that included it in a summer reading list without a warning about the prostition, etc.
LIVES THAT WERE LESS THAN PARADISE.......2007-04-09
Bakers diligent research, and writing prowess brings an intricate narrative weaving of truth and imagination that completely immerses the reader in the fight for survival in 19th century New York City.
While there are an infinite array of threads to this story, the major character focus is on the three women of the saga, all residents of the waterfront slum called Paradise Alley. Having survived everything from the Irish famine to slavery and prostitution, they find themselves once again struggling through difficult times to protect themselves and their loved ones from the insanity that is running rampant in the city.
Any reader with a taste for history, who enjoys a good Dickensian style novel, will be captivated by this story and find themselves flying through the nearly 700 pages of this novel.
If you are a lover of historical fiction, this book will definitely not disappoint.
Great history - poor characters.......2007-02-10
Paradise Alley is a fascinating historical novel about a time and place that has become a footnote in most history books - the Draft Riots in New York City in 1863. Baker does a wonderful job in presenting this incident in all of its nuances and complexity. However, maybe to make it sell better, the novel concentrates too heavily (for my tastes) on the personal - the life stories of characters who experienced and suffered in the riots. The characters seemed very two-dimensional. Their suffering was so extreme that they lost their veracity and became cartoon characters.
Of great interest was the proposed walking tour of lower Manhattan included in the Appendix. I wish I was closer to New York so I could more closely experience and understand the events depicted in this historical novel.
Hot Times in the Old Town.......2006-11-02
The second book of Baker's planned trilogy about historical New York City, "Paradise Alley" is set during the infamous 1863 draft riots in NYC. Protest against Lincoln's attempt to draft soldiers into the Union army quickly devolves into a pogrom against free blacks struggling to live as second-class citizens in the city. Irish-Americans and the backgrounds they bring with them from Ireland also play a big part in the story--both the heroine and the villain are survivors of the 1840's Potato Famine in Ireland. This book seemed more historically grounded and less surreal than Baker's first book of the trilogy, "Dreamland". (The story is completely separate--no characters or events overlap) However, the recounting of historical events from the draft riots seems surreal enough and serves as a wakeup call to Yankees about the less savory aspects of their history. The human story is also very involving as Baker alternates points of view among seven major characters: a "proper" Irish-American woman and Union soldier husband; a newspaper "hack" and his [...] girlfriend; and the Irish refugee heroine and her two husbands, the first a fellow refugee and villain, the second a good-hearted, but flawed black man. An entertaining and instructive aspect of the book is Baker's descriptions of the workings of volunteer fire brigades in the middle of the 19th century. Putting out fires appears to have been about third or fourth on their priority list.
do yourself a favor and read this book.......2005-11-22
I've read many books on the Irish suffering and hardships during the famine and after. This book brings both suffering from the old country and the new world in such bliss.A must read for anyone interested in fact based fiction.

1954 Talbot Press Limited. Hardcover, 273 pages. Paradise Alley was a place of wharves and ships, sheds and granaries, tangled railway lines and sea-serving canals. Its days were filled with the rattle of cranes and lorries, the follow-my-leader clanking of railway wagons, and the suck and surge of the tides....

Meltdown A+.......2007-02-20
I bought the book because I love Shannon Mckenna books. Her stories are never a let down! It has everything! The other stories are ok.
McKenna great, Kauffman ok, Sheedy no........2007-02-14
I rated McKenna's story, Meltdown, as 5 - I loved it. I was laughing out loud several times. Great characters, good plot. It's one of the stories that I periodically think about when doing other things. I would recommend buying the book just for the McKenna story.
I rated Kauffman's story, Exposed, as 3 - for an ok read. Characters were ok. Didn't care much for the plot. There was too much analyzing of feelings.
I rated Sheedy's story, Pure Ginger, as 2 - did not like it. I did not respect Ginger's judgment by dressing so much like an old spinster, that it was inappropriate for her work. The author created conflict by having the guy leave on a business trip without telling her. Not worth reading.
Mixed Bag - two very good, one horrible.......2006-09-18
I've read every bad boys anthology out there and this one has two very good stories and one that is just horrible. McKenna has let me down once again and I don't think I'll ever read anything by her anymore. Her stuff is slightly disturbing and doesn't belong with any of the other authors I've read in the other anthologies.
McKenna's story is about a Jane Duvall, head hunter, who is out to land a big account by stealing/wooing away any employee of Mac MacNamara's. That is until she meets him and all bets are off. The sexual tension crackles and soon her job is the last thing on mind.
Kauffman steams it up with a couple of strangers stuck on a train in a blizzard. Soon the storms over and the strangers part, but will it be the end? Can they go back to their jobs and pretend this was just a train trist? Or do they dare want more?
Sheedy's heroine's on a mission, to 'beige-up' her wardrobe and stop wearing those sexy outfits that keep attracting the wrong kind of men. With her PR firm she meets the sexy ex-soap star hero who can see right through her librarian clothes. Just getting her out of them and into his arms maybe a tough battle.
Koudos to Sheedy and Kauffman for two very good and *HOT* stories as usual. I especially liked Kauffman's romantic ending -very touching.
Now to McKenna. Her stuff is just down-right disturbing. She takes male domineering a bit too far. As she did in a previous anothology I've read, the hero tends to prevent the female from leaving and makes her 'submit' to him. Yeah, she gets her *pleasure*, but bullying her *ALOT*?. YUCK! The demands the hero makes are too much and it leaves the reader feeling creeped-out instead of steemed-up and sighing. The love scenes are too soon too, barley any build-up compared to the other's I've read. That's not what I want from my romances. I'm not a prude, but I just can't see what other reviewers are calling steamy when it involves some disturbing behavior.
Get this one from the library and skip McKenna's story.

Write Faster Shannon!.......2006-08-28
I love everything Shannon McKenna writes! Whoohoo, can she create a sexy character! (and write one helluva love scene-wow!) I just wish she'd write faster...
All three of these stories were great and I now have 2 more great authors to read too.
Great Bad Boys Book!.......2006-07-13
This is one of my favorites of the 'Bad Boys' books. The first story by Shannon McKenna was great! I love her style of writing and the characters in her books. The other 2 stories were very good also. I enjoyed reading all three stories, and certainly this book will not disappoint.

When Killashandra Ree joined the mysterious Heptite Guild, she knew that she would be forever changed. Crystal singing brought ecstasy and pain, near-eternal life...and gradual loss of memory. What she hadn't counted on was the loneliness she felt when her heart still remembered what her mind had forgotten. Barely makes the grade.......2007-01-19
This book does not live up to first two books in the trilogy. This book was poorly written, although the ending is somewhat satisfying. Everything in between the beginning and ending could have been better, though.I recommend it only to die-hard McCaffrey fans, with the caveat that they will not find the quality work of "Crystal Singer","Dragonflight", or "The White Dragon".
Crystal Line.......2007-01-10
Just filling out my library with a good read. I like McCaffrey, not deep, but well written.
Words McCaffrey is not allowed to use anymore:.......2007-01-05
"Yarran beer"
"good brew"
"Jewel Junk"
"Lanzecki"
Though I greatly enjoyed Crystal Singer, and thought Killashandra, though flawed and not up to the quality of Crystal Singer, was a good enough read, though the bodice-ripper aspects of the romance were irritating. But Crystal Line promises a lot and delivers little. The characters are getting wearisome, Killashandra's memory loss is irritating and becomes a very tiresome and overused plot device, and McCaffrey falls into the trap so many series writers do - of using the same phrases and references again and again, ad nauseam, to the point where the reader wonders if the author is simply cutting and pasting lines and phrases from the previous two books. How many times must these characters drink Yarran beer in these books and act as if each and every sip is a great revelation of a "good brew"? Let them discover something else to drink, for heaven's sake! It becomes embarrassing.
For fans of the Crystal Singer series, this is a fairly satisfying ending, but a lot of red pencil wielding on the part of a good editor who was aware of how often McCaffrey was re-using tired old phrases in a misguided attempt to tie the three books together would have been a very good idea.
But then, this is the author who has used the word "dragon" in titles to the point where it's painful and gives rise to continuous jokes about the possible risque titles for the next "Dragon-whatever" book. Repetition obviously isn't a problem for her, or her devoted fan following.
Great ending to the trilogy; .......2005-04-29
I love the CRYSTAL SINGER trilogy----KILLASHANDRA is my favorite of the three, although I like this one as well. Make sure you read the three CRYSTAL SINGER books in the proper order (CRYSTAL SINGER first, then KILLASHANDRA, then CRYSTAL LINE)---if you don't, you'll have a hard time following what is going on. This end to the trilogy does have a few minor flaws and inconsistencies, but as always with McCaffrey's writing, her plot and universe is so compelling, you'll keep reading anyway.
Nice finale to a wonderful trilogy.......2005-03-23
While Crystal Line is NOT my favorite book in this trilogy, it is still a good read. It is great to go back to Ballybran and cut crystal with Lars and Killashandra. My biggest problem with this book is that there are some inconsistencies/errors in it that were seemingly missed in the editing.
The plot seemed a little lacking in my mind and the story jumps around a bit. I also missed some of the favorite characters from the first two books who are now dead or incapacitated. I found the sections where Killa is suffering from severe memory loss difficult to read.
All in all I did enjoy the book -- it's great to spend more time with old friends on Ballybran.
If you have read the other 2 books (Crystal Singer & Killashandra), don't miss this one.

Candlewick, one of the most popular lines of glass produces by the Imperial Glass Corporation of Bellaire, Ohio, was introduced in 1936 and manufactured until the company's closing in 1984. Today this pattern, made in crystal and many lovely colors, attracts avid collectors of fine glassware. In this beautifully photographed and carefully researched book, nearly every item in the crystal line is shown and discussed. The authors have used Imperial's factory records, catalogs, and price lists to assemble extensive background information on these exclusively crystal Candlewick pieces. Organized in easy-to-use categories, the book covers place settings, serving pieces, sets, and miscellaneous items such as ashtrays, candle holders, compotes, and vases. To further help with identification, undocumented pieces, reproductions, and similarities are shown as well. Measurements are all of Candlewick's stem and tumbler lines are included, as well as many new facts not published before. Values are included both in the captions and in an overall price guide organized by mold number. This book is an essential reference for Candlewick collectors and all who enjoy beautiful glass.

Book Description
The book develops the modern theory of ferroelectricity in terms of soft modes and lattice dynamics and also describes modern techniques of measurement, including X-ray, optic, and neutron scattering, infra-red absorption, and magnetic resonance. It includes a discussion of the related phenomena of antiferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, and ferroelasticity and seconds on domains, thin films, ceramics, and polymers, leading on to a comprehensive survey of potential and actual device capabilities for pyroelectric detection, memories, display, and modulation. It should provide an authoritative account for those engaged in research or graduate ferroelectric or pyroelectric devices.

bible of ferroelectricis.......2001-05-23
this is by far the most detail book on ferroelectric theory and application
The most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics.......1999-02-16
The book by Lines and Glass is the most comprehensive book on the physics of ferroelectrics that I have come across in the pertinent literature. It is by no means for the novice since a solid background in solid state physics is absoluytely needed. The book especially addresses the lattice dynamics picture of ferroelectricity in a concise manner. Also, optical properties of ferroelectrics are given in full depth that is rather difficult to find in many other texts. This book is by no means a textbook. It is very comprehensive reference volume as it contains a lot of critical experimental data and quite a lot of illustrations. Furthermore, the bibliography is vast. All physical models used in the physics of ferroelectricity are derived/summarized from the very first step making the book very "dense" in content. It would characterize the book as somewhat difficult to read, yet I highly recommend it for those who are interested in the physics of ferroelectric phenomena. I do hope that book will be reprinted soon and be available at an affordable price. Addendum: Since the writing of this review, it seems the book has become available again at a much reduced price ;-)

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A531843. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The objective of this thesis is to examine the process and managerial policies used for the F-14 Standard Depot Level Maintenance (SDLM) and compare it to the processes and managerial policies for overhaul of the F/A-18 and for the United Airlines 737. Efficiencies discovered in the F/A-18 and 737 overhaul processes that can be applied to reduce F-14 SDLM Turn Around Time (TAT) are identified. The F-14 community faces the possibility of having insufficient numbers of aircraft to satisfy fleet requirements due to excessive SDLM TAT. A 50% reduction in TAT would yield an increase of 10 to 11 aircraft available for use per year. A TAT reduction of 1Q% is required by the fourth quarter of Fiscal Year 1998 in order to alleviate the premature retirement of approximately 10% of the inventory (21 F-14 aircraft). This research identifies areas for potential F14 SDLM TAT improvement pertaining to planning, pre-induction requirements, and the component management policies at NADEP Jacksonville, Florida.

Bible interpretation is simplified as five steps that most serious Bible readers can practice, with learning aids and clear explanation.
Customer Reviews:
a must have book!!!.......2007-01-12
This book will teach you what you need to know and is very well put together. I advise anyone who wants to take the Bible serious this is the book for you.
Thank you Henry Virkler, i have learned more from your book than any other i used at Bible Collage and you put it in a easy format. You took a hard subject and made it accessible.
Well researched, balanced, resource on hermeneutics........2005-02-11
Virkler does an excellent job of presenting facts and theories, yet at the same time presents varying historical views of each sujbect. Some may object to the inclusion of alternative viewpoints on some subjects but I found this helpful in understanding how different people came up with their particular opinions. I found the research to be sound and extensive.
"To Each His Own Hermeneutics".......2004-10-29
I was quite disappointed in this book. In a very "round about" way Virkler tells his readers that the Bible is to be interpreted personally, that is, no interpretation is wrong, and no interpretation is right, i.e., "to each his own." This type of new hermeneutic, though on the increase, decreases the authoritative nature of God's Word.
Superb book on how to study the Bible.......2004-06-16
I took this course via correspondence with Dr. Virkler as the instructor. This is a superb book with very sound Bible study techniques. It teaches the importance of literal translation- meaning: finding the author's intended meaning. The process he teaches is flexible and applies to all types of reading, although it is tailored to the study of God's Word. The book teaches us to let go of our predisposed ideas if they conflict with what is found in Scripture. He teaches all the tools to finding the information needed to get to the true meaning of Scripture. If we all followed these principles, the divisions between Christians would be all-but-nonexistent.
Simple and useful.......2004-06-15
Verkler's goal in this work was essential to provide christian laety with a volume on Biblical interpretation that was useful for not only understanding but implemeting the text of scripture. I feel that he has met his goal. Verkler addresses the issues that are typically involved in hermeneutics; history of Biblical interpretation, lexical/syntactical elements, theological models, etc. But he makes it clear that application of scripture is ultimately the purpose of hermeneutics and ultimately his goal in this work. This is a very easy to understand, basic treatment of hermeneutics that will aid in further study. I would recommend this work to anyone who does not wish to, in the words of Matt Damon in 'Good Will Hunting', "...drop a hundred fifty grand on an education you could've gotten in buck fifty in late fees at the local library".
