Product Description
Multi-award winning photographer Peter Lik descibes Las Vegas as a "neon oasis embraced by a spiritual land." In this collection of full-color, panoramic views of the city and its stark environs, Lik juxtaposes the extremes of Vegas' perpetual glow with the harrowing beauty of the Nevada desert.
Customer Reviews:
Spectacular.......2007-07-07
This is now the best photography book I own. My two favorite photo books are nature and Las Vegas images, this book combines both. It is about half Las Vegas pictures and half nature pictures from nevada and surrounding states. All the photos in the book are stunning, and it has some of the best Vegas photos I have seen. Aside from the photos themselves, the design/layout of the book and paper used are also top quality. A must have for Vegas/photography lovers.
"...And Beyond" Is The Best Part.......2007-05-12
I'm not normally big into art or photography, but a stunning canyon picture at the entrance to Peter Lik's gallery at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas pulled me in and an obsession was born. Lik's "America" book is definitely some of his finest work, and his Maui book is also really good too, so how does Las Vegas stack up? As expected, there's only so much you can do with the strip - there's many variations on the Bellagio fountains, and images of some of the grandest resorts from angles few can ever see, but mostly the photos are just high quality representations of Las Vegas. Good stuff, but not the landscape imagery the artist excels at. The best of the strip are some of the panoramic shots at sunrise or sunset with the mountains in the background.
It's the rest of the book that truly stands out, as the national parks near Las Vegas are fully represented. There are dozens of gorgeous shots of Zion, Valley Of Fire, Bryce Canyon, Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon, and in a spectacular finale - the Grand Canyon.
For someone who is in love with Las Vegas and the beauty of the surrounding area, this book is amazing. For pure love of photography, others might only be interested in the desert landscapes offered here.
Great Pictures.......2007-05-09
The book arrived right on time and it was great. The pictures were like nothing I have ever seen before. I recommend the book and Peter Lik to anyone.

Customer Reviews:
Great overview of the life and art of Colin Campbell Cooper.......2007-07-21
The work has been a long time in coming. Colin Campbell Cooper was recognized as one of the great American Impressionists in his day. He was elected to the National Academy, his work won many awards and was welcome in any show or gallery. He painted the skyscrapers and important buildings in New York City, the beautiful landscapes of California and was a world traveler painting all over the world. In spite of this, he is overlooked today. This work will help to re-introduce Cooper to many who are not aware of his greatness.
A key acquisition any art library needs to add........2007-02-08
If you don't readily recognize the name of Impressionist painter Colin Campbell Cooper, it's because his career was often overlooked - to the point that this catalog is his first in-depth study, and as such is an essential addition to any comprehensive Impressionist art history collection. Here a biography of his life blends with full-page color paintings and detailed discussions of his influences and art. A key acquisition any art library needs to add.

For Non-Western Art, Humanities, or Culture and Religion courses.
This one-volume survey provides students with detailed and systematic coverage of Non-Western art via coverage of the cultural and ideological contexts in which art was created.
Michael Kampen-O’Riley created this text to serve as the market’s first dedicated survey of Non-Western art. Rather than mere descriptions of the various styles, Kampen-O’Riley provides detailed analysis of each major style within its cultural context, through which students can derive the meaning of works of art in each style. The text also provides students with an efficient educational tool with which to study art from nearly two thirds of the world.

Book Description
Since the mid-eighties, more audiences have been watching Hollywood movies at home than at movie theaters, yet little is known about just how viewers experience film outside of the multiplex. This is the first full-length study of how contemporary entertainment technologies and media--from cable television and VHS to DVD and the Internet--shape our encounters with the movies and affect the aesthetic, cultural, and ideological definitions of cinema. Barbara Klinger explores topics such as home theater, film collecting, classic Hollywood movie reruns, repeat viewings, and Internet film parodies, providing a multifaceted view of the presentation and reception of films in U.S. households. Balancing industry history with theoretical and cultural analysis, she finds that today cinema's powerful social presence cannot be fully grasped without considering its prolific recycling in post-theatrical venues--especially the home.

Customer Reviews:
Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS.......2006-12-03
This beautifully illustrated hardcover is the perfect gift this Christmas for fans of C.S. Lewis's The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
Having reviewed the other three books on C.S. Lewis published this autumn by Broadman & Holman, I can't help thinking that this one is the culmination of the others. Filled with lovely, black & white illustrations of the story characters, as well as fascinating photographs about Lewis and his time, this is one of those books that not only will look great on your coffee table, but will definitely attract lots of attention as well.
The book is a treasure of interesting facts, quotes and anecdotes--in sum, everything you ever wanted to know about C.S. Lewis's most memorable work. It is divided into four parts. The first part offers a profile of Lewis's life; the second part dives into the fantastic world of Narnia; the third part looks at some of the most fascinating hidden meanings and allusions in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe; the fourth part offers a glimpse into this work through the eyes of television and the movies.
Though the authors' language is laced with a heavy Christian tone, this is a work that can be enjoyed by anybody, no matter their religion. Intriguing, informative, and a pleasure to look at, Narnia Beckons is a valuable reference book, especially for schools and libraries.
Narnia Beckons .......2005-11-01
C. S. Lewis was able to communicate the mysteries of the Kingdom of God by following the example of Jesus Christ who spoke in parables. His writings were uniquely inspired by the Holy Spirit who is the master communicator reaching beyond the veils that blind the eyes and minds of mankind in a world of darkness. The sword of Truth alone is able to divide between darkness and light, and set the captives free. Ted Baehr and his son Jim are to be commended for creating a magnificent synopsis of the life and literary works of C. S. Lewis in "Narnia Beckons." We thank the entire Baehr family for the great influence they contribute to the realm of communication.
Exceptional!.......2005-10-22
Narnia Beckons is truly a wonderful work. Packed full of information, photos and stories about C.S. Lewis, his life, his writings and some inside information on characters in his book that I found fascinating. I read this book in one sitting and reread it just for the enjoyment of the read.
I was literally charmed by this work. If I could put it in simple words, this is not a heavy read, but a delightful run through of a master writer, a model Christian, dotted with information that will enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the works of C.S.Lewis. A definite must have!

Book Description
Beyond East and West: Seven Transnational Artists features recent work by seven important contemporary artists who come from the region stretching from Egypt to Pakistan, but who have lived much of their lives in Europe or the United States. The artists, Jananne Al-Ani, Ghada Amer, Mona Hatoum, Y.Z. Kami, Walid Raad, Michal Rovner, and Shahzia Sikander, draw on their experiences of displacement and knowledge of multiple cultures to offer alternative visions of the contemporary world. They have crossed or collapsed political, cultural, and religious borders, and disrupted conventional and stereotypical representations of time and place, and of history and geography. Their art offers new kinds of intercultural understanding.
David O'Brien and David Prochaska write sensitively of how these artists address various experiences of travel, exile, diaspora, alienation, and integration, feelings of longing and belonging, memories of place and people, encounters with divergent views of sexuality and gender, alternate political understandings of the world, and cultural practices that both divide and unite us.

When Disney/Pixar teamed up to create A Bug's Life, they brought a whole new perspective to the tiny world of insects. Now you can join in the fun of learning how to draw all your favorite characters from the film--from the industrious ants to the bumbling circus bugs to the evil grasshoppers. Learning to draw has never been this much fun!
Customer Reviews:
"A Bug's Life".......2003-09-24
"A Bug's Life" is about an ant, named Flik, who tries to save his colony from the grasshoppers that come every year to get food from the ants. Flik accidentally knocks over the whole pile of food for the grasshoppers and they all get into deep trouble from this. He is then sent out to go and get people/other bugs to help protect the colony. Thus begins the war between the ants and the grasshoppers. This book teaches us to face our fears and stand up to whosoever may challenge us and face them with no fear. This would be for children of the grades of 1st - 3rd. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to read an adventure story.

Create Disney Bugs from the movie!.......2000-01-05
This is a wonderfully informative book that explains the colors chosen for the movie, how to mix colors, how "A Bug's Life" was created, how to draw your own bugs and fill in realistic settings from a bug's point of view. I had never thought about facial expressions for bugs so it makes you think. I loved this book and it is NOT just for kids. I learned a lot and highly recommend it for creative drawing techniques. Have fun!

Nobody ever accused Warren Ellis of lacking imagination. The latest collection of the Spider Jerusalem saga, Transmetropolitan: Lonely City, is packed with laser-guided satire and neo-adolescent wish fulfillment in the form of a bowel disruptor. Sliding his story of government manipulation and counter-manipulation between moments of reflection and observation makes Ellis's downbeat ending a bit less nihilistic than it could have been. Despite the gulf separating us from Jerusalem's City, it's not hard to draw parallels between his milieu of police-run riots and state-maintained misery and our own less colorful environment. Lonely City drags the man who's more "anti" than "hero" out into the world he professes to hate and forces him to do something about it, while never descending into the boring comic-book morality he fights daily. --Rob Lightner

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
There are a couple of standalone type issues in volume 5. However, the main thrust of the plot is still the election. Spider uncovers police brutality and other nastiness in the election campaign, and is still looking for a way to use what he knows to bring down Gary Callaghan, The Smiler.
The way he goes about some of this is very entertaining.
Bitter, vulgar, in-your-face, yet meaningful.......2001-07-05
I highly recommend this new Transmetropolitan TPB. My favorite TPB so far has been the second (Lust for Life), because the first has that new-comic unevenness and the third and fourth had a little too much pointless vulgarity for my taste. But this fifth one really impressed me. Like the others, it's grim, bitter, and funny, and Spider says utterly disgusting and shocking things in that sardonic way that makes him fascinating. But the graphic novel also takes up the issue of the human condition again, makes you remember that the reason Spider is fascinating is that he's not -just- a rat bastard -- he actually cares about the state of the world, and is equally sensitized to both its beauty and its horror. Spider has learned, essentially, that the best way to pursue the truth and fight the Man is to be an evil ****. And that's why we like him.
Special bonus: an introduction by Patrick Stewart, who's apparently a big fan. I would have never guessed.

Book Description
In this lovingly hilarious look at her 44-years-and-counting marriage to a man she wouldn't trade for anything in the world -- who would finish her sentences? -- Erma Bombeck offers observations as only she can, on:
- The true test of compatibility: buying a house that "needs work"
- Surviving parenthood, and the nest that won't stay empty
- How times of struggle are a piece of cake compared to handling success
- Elevating guilt to a sacrament
- What to do with a man who saves instruction manuals; thinks a fishing license makes a great anniversary gift; and, thanks to the remote control, has never seen a television commercial
- Frazzled mothers wondering who they have to sleep with to get fired from the job
- Facing maternity, mortality, and metamorphosis together
This entertaining portrait of an American marriage is Erma Bombeck at her most intimate, and her funniest.
Customer Reviews:
Laugh out loud funny...........2006-10-29
This book is full of wit and one liners from a woman who knows family. I myself only have a husband and no kids but her writing is still hilarious to me. It reminds me of things my own mother used to say in her own funny and sacastic way. When she talk about her husband and his "ways" of packing a suitcase or talking about the kids I laughed out loud while reading in bed and scared my husband. I sure do miss her and only wish she could have spent a little more time on earth to make us laugh. I bet God is having a ball with her in heaven.
Never too tired to read Erma's books!.......2006-05-12
I miss Erma. I really do. I miss her style of writing, her humor and her wit. She is probably the only writer from my childhood that I have read faithfully of. Her columns were the highlight of our day when it appeared in our newspapers. Reading this book is like going down memory lane. I remember some of her stuff, but not all of them. This one is a honest and true look at marriage.
Marriage isn't happily ever after. We spend our lives changing our partners, resisting the changes that life throws our way, staying married through thin and fat, through children, through illness and career changes ~~ through death, death of a father and friend. It's a wonderful little book full of wisdom and insights. I love her chapter titles: A House Morally Divided Cannot Stand Each Other or Living on Love.
She offers insights to her own life and marriage oftentimes, poking fun at herself and her family. She is never mean but instead she is inspiring. She makes you think even while laughing at some of the silly things we all do in our own lives. I have not been married as long as she has but already, I see some of the things she has pointed out such as trying to change your husband.
If you're looking for a wonderful book to read ~~ don't miss this one. It's beautifully written and so poignant in some places. Erma writes about life because she has lived it. Her stories are still true today as they were fourteen years ago.

Ah, nostalgia- for those poor souls of the.......2003-06-09
"silent generation", between the "greatest" & the "boomers".
They can relive raising kids, borrowing from your in-laws, sex 50's style, dealing with the 60's etc., all with the wit & wisdom of Erma Bombeck.
This is more like a memoir, probably the last in a series, that rings true sometimes, of course, with exaggeration to humorous effect.
Not much to complain about here. She is a good writer who started small had an understanding, supportive husband & achieved national celebrity.
If you are of a certain age, you will laugh.
Marriage Made in Heaven or Too Tired for an Affair.......2000-11-25
I have always enjoyed Erma Bombeck when she had a column, but the children were small and I never had much time to read. Had I gotten a book like this one, I could of breezed through raising children and marriage with much less guilt. It is one of the funniest (because it's so true) books I've ever read. I am now a collector of Erma Bombecks books. Chapters titled,; "How Much Happiness Can We Finance?" The book for me was filled with memories from the 50's and 60's, and how it used to be. I found myself laughing outloud and shaking my head at the humor, yet truthfulness, that Erma shares with her readers. I'm getting two more of her books for Christmas, and am getting several others on auction. If you need a laugh, kick out some of those endorphins that need to come out and lighten you up, don't miss Erma Bombeck's, "Marriage Made in Heaven or too Tired for an Affair." It's fantastic!
One of the last and best.......2000-08-17
The chronicle of Erma Bombeck's married life, this is a sweet, funny, and realistic view of timeless marriage.
Ms. Bombeck starts on the wedding day, when she and husband Bill were married by a priest who spoke Latin with a Polish accent. She moves on to their children, their multiple homes, a saddening chapter about her tragic miscarriage, the chronicles of her morality arguments with her kids, and finally, her career.
She spent years as a housewife. But Ms. Bombeck's now famous writing started in a local paper, and she warmly describes how emotionally supportive her husband was when her columns became well-known. Touring can't have helped their marriage much, but apparently they both didn't let it hurt it.
She satirizes her own under-par household skills, the weird little quirks that come in with age, nd the glories of growing old together. She doesn't say anything about that last one, but it glows throughout the book.
Bravo, Erma.
