Product Description

In a country whose name is not mentioned, something never before seen since the beginning of time happens: death decides to stop its unflagging track and people stop dying. From that moment on, the destiny of human kind will be to live eternally. A short period of euphoria is followed by despair and chaos. People search for ways to trick death into killing; the elderly are seen with the hatred reserved only for that which we cannot alter. Nobel Prize winner (1998) Jose Saramago offers a literary narrative that centers on human perplexity when faced with one of the unavoidable realities of our existence --death.

5 out of 5 stars Forever young ?.......2006-12-21

Saramago may be regarded as one the most invenctive authors of these days. He is a true fable maker; his febrile imagination and the fascinating issues he carves in relief in each one of his works, become an invitation to undertake his lectures as if we undertake a prodigious journey.

Imagine there is a country in which the people just don't die. At first glance, it might sound seductor and even desirable, but when the number of members of the third age's population increases notably, it raises a set of unexpected dramatic situations.

The main problem is to deal with the old Faustian myth; to live forever, but Saramago goes far beyond and makes a sharp inflection about the dilema this means.

The happy ending should not to turn our attention about the remarkable fact the death is part of the life, and all the efforts made by our post modernist society in order to guarantee us a major longevity, invites us to think the question be put on this way: To live more or to live better?

I rather live a short and productive life instead of a large and improductive existence, signed by the triviality and frivolity.

"We are what we do" Johann Wolfgang Goethe

*** Warning: May Contain Spoilers ***

Death takes a holiday in Saramago's latest venture into magical realism. For obvious reasons, as one gets older death looms larger in one's consciousness, and I think Saramago, who is 83 as of this writing, may have intended "As Intermitencias da Morte" (which I read in Portuguese, so I'm using the Portuguese title, sans circumflex on one "e," as accents tend to cause problems on these pages) to be a meditation on the subject. It falls a bit short of the elegiac or profound, however; this is not John Donne's "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Meditation 17" ("No Man is an Iland, intire of it selfe . . ."). The first part of the novel is largely a description of the institutional disruptions in a small European country as people stop dying one day. It's funny at times, and at other times mordant (in other words, typical Saramago). In the second part (and I don't want to give away too much here), death is further personified, and there's a very light character study of one of death's intended victims. The plot is thin throughout the novel, but because Saramago writes so well, it still makes for enjoyable reading. Unfortunately, the character Saramago introduces in the second part has a dog. I regret this, because when Saramago introduces a dog into his writing, he usually waxes sentimental over the creature, distracting the reader and generally subtracting from the acuity and clarity of his observations of the state of the world. He is obviously a dog enthusiast, but I would urge him to keep his writing free of canines in the future.

      DARING THE DUKE (APB)

      Anne Mallory

When we last saw Stephen Chalmers he was recovering from the attempt on his life by a ring of royal traitors. Since then he's successfully inherited a title, but he's yet to discover the identity of the mysterious rescuer responsible for saving his life. He's also yet to discover the secret identity of the criminal he's been hunting for years: an infamous thief who disappeared from the London scene years ago, only to return recently and act more brazenly than ever. And though he doesn't have the thief in his clutches yet, he's closer than ever.

Orphaned and responsible for her younger sister, Audrey Kendrick had no choice but to turn to a life of crime in order to survive. It wasn't long before the clever, beautiful young woman became England's most notorious thief. Her true identity had never been discovered, not even by Stephen Chalmers, the disarming young Duke who had followed her for years.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Mystery Novel .......2006-02-28

'Daring the Duke' by Anne Mallory is historical romance mystery novel based in 1824. Audrey Kendrick is a famous thief who is now being blackmailed to save her sister. Audrey has history with the new Duke Stephen Chalmers but he does remember her saving his life. The Duke finds out who Audrey is and the chance is on ..... This was fun quick read. . I would recommend this novel and The Lady Lies by Samantha Saxon.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of slow..........2005-09-13

I expected great things based on the five stars reviews here, but I wasn't very impressed with this book. It actually took me over a week to finish it. Normally I'll read a good book straight through in a day or two, but I kept setting this one aside for more interesting books. It's plot was unique enough to have me coming back to it eventually, but I was never in a big hurry to see how it ended.

I thought the plot and the characters had real potential, but there needed to be a little more detail and depth in order to give it that sense of richness of a great romance.

The story seemed to be told on a superficial level, in that we were told the bare facts about what was happening and who the characters were. There was simply not enough descriptions or depth to create a really dynamic story. Usually I feel that romance novels err on the side of giving too much detail that bogs down the story, but in case I think more detail was needed in order to hook the reader. For example, there were plenty of secondary characters who I would have liked to see more of, but they would only appear for 1 paragraph to 1 page at a time. Not enough time for us to care about these more minor characters, or to get to know the protagonists through interactions with others.

That being said, I did see real potential with this story as it had a unique plot and appealing characters. I think with a little more depth it could have made for a really great crime caper and a great romance. This was the first book I've read by this author, but despite being less than impressed, I would definetly give her another shot in the future to see if she's improved.

5 out of 5 stars A New Voice To Watch In Romance!!!.......2005-08-25

One of the best historical romances I've read in years. I was hooked from the beginning. Great characters with lots of suspense and romance. Hard to put down. The plot and characters seemed fresh, the pace was quick, and it was a totally engrossing read. A sexy hero, a feisty heroine, a mystery, and a passionate romance...put them all together and you get "Daring the Duke", a historical romance you don't want to miss. Anne Mallory developed Audrey Kendrick and Stephen Chalmers's personalities and motivations very convincingly, to the point where you feel as though you know them well enough to be friends by the time you finish the book. One of the things I liked best about this book is the way the author wove the emotional storyline with such a light touch -- I was engrossed with the relationship between the hero and heroine and truly felt as if I knew them both. Daring the Duke was an emotional roller coaster, and I felt all the pain and joy they did. Wonderful love story, great characters with an emotionally scarred hero and strong but vulnerable heroine, unique setting, intriguing plot, edge-of-your-seat pacing, heart-tugging emotion, excellent writing, intense sensual love scenes, and a superb ending. I was so engrossed, I read it in a day. The love scenes are ample & steamy, and the plot is a good one. A fast paced book with an intricate plot that I cannot help but enjoy. Daring the Duke a strong (but not obnoxious) heroine who is in no way ordinary, a back story which is compelling but doesn't get in the way of the love story, and of course a wonderful hero. It was written with an amazing level of intensity and feeling that my heart was pumping furiously with both the palatable passion and the keen sense of danger infused in the story. Steven is a mighty good man. He is HOT HOT HOT! This was just the kind of romance novel I love. Wonderful characters. Characters that seems real because they are not perfect-something most novels like this lack. I absolutely loved this book. The author has a great gift in her ability to develop characters. I must have laughed a hundred times and I absolutely couldn't put the book down until I was finished. I found Anne Mallory writing fresh, and her lead characters fully developed with their personalities very well crafted. I can't wait to read more books from Anne Mallory. I hope she comes out with a new one soon.

      5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel.......2005-08-23

Masquerading the Marquess introduced us to a new author, Anne Mallory, whose knowledge of the Regency period in England is certainly vast. She must be a scholar of note, for her grasp of social and romantic customs is as deep as it is wide. We loved the first book, and we wondered how Ms. Mallory would be able to top the ultra-romantic and intriguing set up that she established. For in the first book her heroine, spunky Camille Minton, worked undercover as a cartoonist or caricaturist for Regency gossip columns while pretending to be a dowdy chaperone! For one thing, few books set in the Regency acknowledge the fact that, unpleasant or not, many women had to work to make a living. Plus, Camille's cunning cartoons were a clever way for author Mallory to describe most of her characters without that tedious job of over-description. The suspense came from asking ourselves when would the Marquess she loved find out she was a "working girl"?

Here the heroine works as a thief--a dashing thief like the Scarlet Pimpernel! Audrey is romantic, decent, hard-working and ultimately does the right thing, but we wince for her virtue and we worry about whether or not she will land the one man who will make her happy--which will it be?

Not by choice but because of a blackmailer who plans to expose her to the "ton" (fashionable crowd of Beau Brummell) and to hurt her sister's reputation if she does not comply with his insane demands. It's like Topkapi or Rififi or any number of suspenseful crime caper movies, blended in with the Regency love affairs we love to follow in Avon romances. DARING THE DUKE ups the emotional ante of the first novel by Mallory, engaging us with her sympathetic characters while making us understand why they sometimes flirt with the law.

I wonder what title will come up next for Anne Mallory? ROMANCING THE REGENT? PURSUING THE PRINCE? VIOLATING THE VISCOUNT? Only time will tell!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous Regency romantic suspense.......2005-07-26

The Duke of Marston Stephen Chalmers failed to catch Hermes the thief who apparently retired until now. For an unknown reason, Hermes has committed six robberies in a week, but this time Stephen knows that the long assumed male thief is a she, Audrey Kendrick; once he has her accomplices he will send her and her team to Newgate.

Audrey detests the blackmailing Travers who has her sister Faye as a hostage to force Hermes to do his bidding. Travers is upset to see Stephen "Bloody" Chalmers with Audrey and warns her to stay away from the gentleman spy. However, it is difficult to avoid someone who seems to be everywhere you are. As Stephen sets up his final trap to capture the entire Hermes gang, he finds his admiration for Audrey's courage and daring grow and his desire for her interfere with his thought process. Audrey falls in love with the forbidden fruit of an aristocrat who wants to send her to Newgate, Australia or his bed, but Faye's safety must come before her betraying heart.

Though readers know who the thief, her "handler" and the sleuth are from the start, DARING THE DUKE is a fabulous Regency romantic suspense due to a terrific triangular cat, rat, and mouse game between the key threesome. Fans will enjoy Stephen's dilemma as he has fallen in love with the obsession he wants to send to prison. Audrey is a brave individual who sub-genre fans will emphasize with about her dilemma, hoping that somehow she overcomes the impossible with Stephen at her side.

A charming hero on an exciting adventure, a a motherless calf who triumphs over adversity to find his cow family. It captures the attention of children, and adults. My grandchildren can attest to that. And who knew a cow could be so lovable and expressive. The illustrations are masterful and delightful. Well done!

My daughter loves this book! She is four years old and is enthralled by the fantastic illustrations as well as the engaging saga of little Duke Devlin. I have read it over and over to her and I love the story and illustrations as well. She has shared the book with several of her cousins who have also thoroughly enjoyed it. Great children's books are hard to find and Duke Devlin the Daring Dogie is definitely one of those rare gems. A Great book!

Always good to see a powerful story whose protagonist is strong but still human, with dimension and depth... and a woman. Not enough of that in our society, but at least it's here.

5 out of 5 stars The Old West through a fractured lens.......2005-12-31

Set in a strange, Futurist version of the Wild West, female ex-bandit Daisy Kutter is tricked into one last train robbery. But all is not as it seems.

It has wry humor, an appealing lead character, a real feel for the West, & fun art.

I'll bet my eyeteeth the cartoonist has a shelf full of Lamour Westerns at home.

This belongs in an odd little sub-genre called the Weird West, claimed equally by Westerns, Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror, all set in the latter half of America's 19th Century, & west of the Mississippi.

I wanna seem more of Miss Daisy Kutter.

          4 out of 5 stars A fine comic.......2005-04-25

The title is actually Daisy Kutter: The Last Train, and it's an excellent graphic novel by Kazu Kibuishi. It's a sort of a space western featuring Daisy Kutter, a former outlaw of mythic repute who gets roped into one more gig. The story is simple and rather unremarkable, but its merits as a comic are many. Kibuishi seems to have mastered the subtle pacing and extended silences that make comics so magical, and he has chosen a level of stylization for his characters that is accessibly cartoonish without being cloying or absurd (think The Incredibles and Tintin rather than Mickey Mouse). One gets the impression he has taken all of Scott McCloud's best advice, consciously or otherwise. Regardless, this is a real gem.

                  Book Description

This best-selling introduction to world religions is ideal for readers with no previous exposure to the subject. Offering accurate, comparative descriptions of a broad range of religions, it gives background material on religious theory and study, while exploring living religions in terms of the historical and cultural factors that produced them. The book concentrates on the lives of the founders of different religions, their basic teachings, and their current status in the world. Unlike other books, Religions of the World includes chapters on Native American and African religions as well as the “smaller” text-based religions, such as Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, and Baha'i. An excellent reference work for those involved in religion and the study of religion, including those involved in marketing for various religious publications, videos, etc.

4 out of 5 stars great introductory text on world religions.......2007-09-12

I have read the chapters on the religions of India (including Islam) and Baha'ism as part of a study abroad course on Indian religions. As a survey of world religions, this may well be the best textbook I've seen so far, and I have looked at a few in my day. It is readable, but also thorough. In addition to reviewing the basic information I've learned before, I found myself coming across little details that I'd never known (like that Mahavira's original name was Nataputta Vardhamana, or that the cause of the Buddha's death was a meal of spoiled pork curry).

The best thing about this book, though, are the passages of primary texts both within and at the end of each chapter. Though sometimes challenging to read, as ancient scripture often is, these selections really captured a lot of the basic character of each faith and supported what was being presented in the chapters.

As an introductory text on world religions, I would definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars From One Instructor to Another . . ........2004-08-30

I use this text to teach my college class on World Religions (REL 101). It is a nice little text. As with all works it has some advantages and some disadvantages.

                  ADVANTAGES:

                  1. An Instructor's Manual With Tests is available. I don't use most of the tests because I prefer class participation and lots of written papers, but the manual helps me keep on target and helps me design questions for class discussion time.

                  2. A free multimedia cd "The Sacred World" is available to instructors who mass order the text. This is a $60 value and contains 60 short video clips. I like to use these to add accent to class times.

                  3. The text itself is well written and time tested (This is the 9th edition). It is easy for the student to read. I usually expect them to read the chapters and be prepared for discussion. My lectures bring additional material to the class.

                  4. All in all these materials are easy to teach from.

                  DISADVANTAGES:

                  1. As one can read from previous reviews, the text has limited depth. It must be assumed that the instructor will have the capability to bring additional material to the classroom.

                  2. The book contains a huge gap in its lack of a chapter on "New Age" religions. This needs to be corrected as any casual trip to a book store will affirm. I usually add the following topics to those which the book covers:
                  a. Atheistic philosophies
                  b. The advent of the post modern mind
                  c. New age religion

5 out of 5 stars Good Book for An Introduction To Religions.......2004-08-23

I have been using Hopfe's book since the fourth edition, and I have found it to be very useful and reliable in my classes. The book shows an awareness of the nuances relevant to the various topics (including definition, contra the claim by a previous reviewer who didn't seem to read past the first page) and Woodward's updating and website keep the book up to date. Yes, the glossary could be more extensive, but I tend to work from the book and not just within the confines of the book (as I'm sure the other reviewer does as well), so this is not a serious impediment. Many more terms are defined in the text than appear in the glossary. A nice little book.

5 out of 5 stars The only book on the subject that I have read.......2003-04-17

The book does a good job of explaining major religions without getting caught up in issues of faith.
It would be nice to know the authors personal religious beliefs, in order to confirm a suspected bias. Their beliefs are not listed in the book. I found it odd that in the Christian chapter, it is not mentioned the trinity or that Christians believe Jesus is God.

More color pictures would be nice. Many words are missing from the glossary and the index, such as "li". The authors use lots of words that the common person doesn't know such as pantheon/patheon?, monastic, etc...

1 out of 5 stars The Mind of a Pocket Calculator.......2001-10-31

Typical of many academic types, Hopfe explains away that which he has no experience with. In this instance, it results in a lifeless mind explaining away world religions, one by one. E.g. the first sentence in the introduction is Webster's definition of religion. One would gather the impression that world religions were the result of a manufacturing process - one similar to the manner in which this book is written - with all the truth and sensitivity of a .45 caliber handgun. If what you want is a kind of macabre vivisection, I suggest Stephen King - he's much better.
