The Feast of the Goat: A Novel

Book Description
In this magisterial and long-awaited novel, Mario Vargas Llosa recounts the end of a regime and the terrible birth of a democracy, giving voice to the historical Trujillo and to the victims, both innocent and complicit, who were drawn into his deadly orbit.
Compelling, disturbing picture of a ruthless dictator and his downfall.......2006-07-01
Mario Vargas Llosa writes some of the most engaging and compelling prose I've encountered. In this novel, he interweaves several stories surrounding the life and death of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina (known as "the goat"), the dictator of the Dominican Republic from 1930 until 1961. For the first half of the book, he alternates between three narratives. One is a day in the life of an aging Trujillo, still brutally controlling as he gradually loses control of his own body. The second tells the story of a group of revolutionaries who have plotted and prepared to assassinate Trujillo. And the third, the most engaging narrative, follows a middle-aged woman who has returned to the Dominican Republic after a several-decade absence to face her demons regarding a disturbing encounter involving her, her father, and the Goat.
Vargas Llosa's characters are compelling and well developed (in some of the assassins' back stories, I felt they were a little too well developed). The author powerfully captures the spirit of this repressive period, the inner workings of the regime, and the bitterness that followed its fall. The first half is engaging, but the second half really takes off, building to multiple (disturbing) climaxes. This book is not for the faint of heart: in the latter half, I encountered three hauntingly graphic scenes, two of torture and one of a sexual assault. (I'm glad that I read the novel in Spanish; it helped dampen the explicitness.) And yet, these atrocities aren't gratuitous inclusions: from my limited knowledge, they reflect true aspects of a terrible regime and of some of the horrors that go on in parts of today's world.
Another marvelous (but easier and not disturbing) piece of historical fiction regarding this time and place is Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies, which tells the story of three freedom fighters and sisters under the Trujillo regime. Also, the Complete Review offers passages from (and links to) several insightful professional reviews of the English translation of La Fiesta del Chivo. I recommend the passages, but don't read the full reviews until after you read the book: several of them include significant spoilers (www.complete-review.com/reviews/vargas/fiestac.htm).
Buenisimo.......2006-06-05
Simplemente una de las mejores obras que he leído en mi vida. Mi conocimiento de la historia de la Republica Dominicana es muy basica, mas eso no fue obstaculo para vivir y sentir esta gran obra. Fabuloso.
Power Lust .......2004-12-08
This is an excellent novel based on actual historical events, the assination of the Domincan Tyrant Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Very well written (I read in Spanish) and well organized. Exposes how senseless and stupid those who worship power can be and all they are willing to give up just to be close to it (power). This one is hard to put down.

EASY READ.......2004-04-19
If you want to kick back and relax this is a good book for it. A good fun read lots of sexual fustration an alpha male a simpering female. What more could you want from Diana Palmer.
Awful!.......2002-02-07
I had to keep checking the front page to make sure this terrible book was by one of my favorite authors, Diana Palmer. Every character in this novel was one-dimensional, and the book was so dialogue heavy. It never SHOWED me what the characters were feeling, but only what they were saying. I love Diana Palmer but this book was such a dissapointment. I wanted to love it, but I did not care about whether the characters got together or whether they lived or died. This was one of the worst books I've ever read. The only reason I finished it was to be fair to one of my favorite authors. Pass on this one; it's a waste of time. Try Palmer's Lacy.
The Case of the Missing Secretary.......1999-12-24
The back cover reads:
"Kit Morris would simply quit and let financial wizard Logan Deverell see for himself just how far his Midas touch took him...without a secretary! For three years she'd kept his books, losing her head over one singularly stubborn financial figure--Logan himself! If he was too proud to sense the sparks, Kit had a mind to make him sense their absence! How was a respectable busienessman supposed to react when his missing secretary turned out working for a private eye? Sure, Logan was miserable. But he couldn't ask Kit to come back to work when every inch of him wanter her--for play!"
CHARMING,WITTY,AND FUNNY.......1998-11-08
THIS WAS THE FIRST DIANA PALMER BOOK I READ AND I WAS HOOKED. I MUST HAVE READ IT 5 TIMES AND NEVER GET TIRED OF STORY LINE. LIKE THIS BOOK SO WELL, STARTED COLLECTING ALL OF HER BOOKS. A MUST READ

A Note by Ichigo~.......2006-11-05
Hi! I'm Ichigo, just thought I'd put a little review for the second book. I don't want to give anything away, but you know how in the first book we're just getting to know each other (even though it's not all of us) and I sorta don't really like Mint . . . yeah. But this book features the other two Mew Mew's: Zakuro and Pudding. Zakuro is part wolf, and Pudding is part lion. . .monkey. . thing. I don't remember I'll have to ask her later. But anyway in this book this is where the Mew Mew's really start to get together, ya know battling chimera anima and stuff like that. (Kish is such the flirt!). . . (and an alien!) So, if you haven't decided whether you wanted to buy this book or not, I think you should. Even though it doesn't have me on the cover *sniff* it's still good. Oh and. . . oh, gotta go! More chimera anima to fight! Bye!
Tokyo Mew Mew Book 2.......2006-01-09
In the start of this book there are only three Mew Mews: Ichigo Momomiya, Mint Aizawa, and Lettuce Midorikawa. Ichigo is part iriomote cat, Mint is part ultramarine lorikeet (a bird), and Lettuce is part porpoise. They meet two other girls, Pudding Fong who is part golden lion tamarin (a monkey), and Zakuro Fujiwara who is part gray wolf. Zakuro is probably my favorite. I like Mint, too. Mint is really pretty on the cover. I like her hairdo.
You should probably read book 1 first. It is about how Ichigo gets her powers and meets Mint and Lettuce.
Kawiia manga!.......2005-11-26
This book is very cute and highly recomended! I just got this book a while ago and I loved it!The only thing I really hate is Kish he's just to flirty around Ichiga. So in this book The mews (Ichoga,Mint and lettuce) finally find the other two mews ,Zakuro and Purin(A.K.A Pudding),
and Minto(mint)and Retasu(Lettuce) meet the alien Kish. This book is made for some one nine or older for some mild laguege.

This Book is So Good.......2005-11-21
Tokyo Mew Mew
By; Mia Icumi
This book Tokyo Mew Mew was a very good book to read. The main characters were Ichigo the" leader", Mint the rich girl who always has a proper time to do every thing, Lettuce the clumsy one, Pudding who has a lot of energy, and Zacuro the model. This book leaves off from the first one. Mint, Ichigo, Lettuce, Pudding, and Zacuro got injected with animal DNA in a freak accident now Ichigo has to find the other mew mews to help her save the world from anima animals. Kish (a bad guy) likes to flirt with Ichigo and in this book Kish comes out of no where and kisses her. He wants to get rid of the mew mews so he and his master can take over the world. I wanted to read this book because my friend got me hooked on the show so I wanted to read the book to see what was going on. I think girls around 12 or 13 would enjoy this book because its got a really good plot and its about all theaes girls who are like animals. The theme of this book is "don't judge a book by its cover" because people think the mew mews are bad but they're not.
A good thing that I liked was that they were really powerful and they worked at a really nifty coffee shop. A bad thing would be that the ending was not enough and I wanted to read more about what happened so it leaves you hanging in a way.
Over all I think this book rocked so hard and ill read it again any day. I recommend this book because it's really good and it's really entertaining for girls. Im glad I read and hopefully I could get someone hooked on it.
Gabrielle D.
Tokyo Mew Mew vol.2.......2005-10-18
I am Mia not Frank!(just to let you know) This book continues the cliffhanger ending of book 1, the scene with Kish kissing Ichigo. This book made me want Ichigo to love Kish instead of Masaya or Ryou. In this book the rest of the mew mews are introduced. The stupid names and battle cries don't get any less stupider. That's the only downside. This book Kish in it (yay^_^) and tells alittle more about Mint. Ryou shows his love for Ichigo much more in this book but she's just too dense to accualy see it! If you read the first book then you're probably like me inbetween book 1 and 2; dieing for more! Ichigo still won't love Kish(boohoo-_-)This series is like Sailor Moon so if you like Sailor Moon you'd like this!

Customer Reviews:
Tokyo Mew Mew a la mode.......2006-07-30
I've read everyones reviews, and i have to admit, it was a let down. I was really looking forward to reading another 6 volumes, and even though the main plot was pretty good, i couldnt help but feel let down by the ending. Bad guys deciding to turn good usually happens in toddler books, and i feel that the plot could be expanded more so that there would be more books.
It was still pretty good though.
Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode.......2006-07-24
This book is exiting, and is one of stay up all night reading it books. Very romatic. Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode, Vol.2, is the best of the two books out yet.
OK Book.......2006-05-29
It was a good book, I was just expecting more from it. If you like it I would also recomend Magical Pokemon Journey.
Really..........2006-05-15
By all means, I love this series a lot, and it was my intro to manga, but this book in the series gave me an annoyed feeling. In anticipation of the book, I was quite excited, but when I read it, it was boring and the bad guys gave up without a fight! Truthfully, this could have been so much better.
*SPOILERS ALERT*Even now, when I look at it, its an extreme disappointment in comparison to the previous books. The Mews are in a heated battle against the enemy, but then all of a sudden, the evil leader of the enemy just give up, saying that they should just give up and life goes on. Yes, 2 charachers relize their love for eachother, but an incredible ending goes flying out the door. The book was still good, but once agian, it was a disappointment.
The Mews.......2006-05-15
This is one of my favorite series, but I thought this was a bit of a let-down compared to the other books. I thought that the series ended abruptly, and badly. In the end, it left me frustraited and broke.

Customer Reviews:
Guru in a book.......2007-07-26
I do not generally enjoy spiritual reading, but when I took a meditation class six months ago, "Heart of Meditation" was the recommended text.
This book is a delight. Wonderfully readable, warm and funny, it is full of sympathetic and practical advice. Swami Durgananda understands the challenges we face sitting down to quiet our minds, and provides page after page of engaging exercise, advice, and stories from her own practice to encourage us forward.
Whether I settle in for a long read or simply pick up "Heart of Meditation" up and page through, I always feel like I've had a visit with a warm and loving teacher, someone who has enriched my life and meditation practice. When I'm done, I get up with a renewed sense of spiritual purpose and gratitude.
And I'd like to take this opportunity to say "Thanks!"
Perfect text for meditation teachers........2007-02-18
This book is easy to follow and is full of wonderful meditation exercises. Swami Durgananda takes the reader through the practice of meditation in an easy, deeply spiritual manner. I use this book as a textbook for my meditation classes. All my students have found it to be very helpful.
Moving reading to support your practice.......2007-01-17
Whether you are a beginner to meditation or have been doing it for a while, Sally Kempton's "The Heart of Meditation" will deepen your practice.
Written while she was still totally aligned with the Siddha Yoga school, the book's only distraction is the heavy Guru-worship mentioned throughout. This is not in and of itself a bad thing at all-I am sure it has transformed many-but it may give you the feeling, if you are not careful in your reading, that without the Guru you can make no major steps in deepening your practice. I am sure that is not Durgananda's intent.
The book offers stories and experiments that are simply delicious. If you are "struggling" with meditation, it is highly likely that the experience you were hoping for (an unfortunate distraction, but also the hook in meditation) will occur during one of the exercises or discussions. If you are not struggling, then you may be able to See something you had not Seen before.
I find most books on meditation either austere or esoteric/obscure. This book has depth, joy, and excitement all the way through. Reading this book will strongly encourage you to go forward with an open mind losing the "am I doing it right?" mentality once and for all.
This book is helpful.......2005-07-20
Even after meditating for 20 years, this book is a great help to dealing with your mind during meditation. Thank you Swami Durgananda for sharing your experiences with us and and being so articulate. There is a very important piece that is illuminated here for the dedicated meditator.
Incredibly helpful.......2005-04-22
I've been using this book as my meditation guidebook for about two years now. It has consistantly inspired me. My meditation practice has gone much deeper during this time, and I give a lot of the credit to the exercises and explanations in Sally Kempton's book. Ms Kempton (Swami Durgananda) writes from her own experience as a long-time meditator, and for me she was able to shed light on questions that I've not seen answered elsewhere. It also contains lovely quotes from great meditation masters of different traditions, and a great deal of well-presented knowledge from the texts of yoga and Kashmir Shaivism. This is a book to grow with, especially if you meditate in a kundalini-based tradition. i have never found a book that answered so many of my questions. Highly recommended.
