Amazon.com's Best of 2001
David Schickler's debut seems at first to be a lot of fun: a gaggle of young Manhattanites with fancy jobs and fine educations chase each other around town, falling in love or not. In a series of linked stories, Schickler gives us a perverted heiress; a bumbling schoolteacher whose teenage student proposes marriage to him; a bad comic who finds his métier in off-off-Broadway theater. The writing is cool and a bit willfully naive: "Rally McWilliams was profoundly lonely," begins the title story. "She wanted to believe that she had a soul mate, a future spouse gestating somewhere in Nepal or the Australian Outback. But in Manhattan, where Rally lived, all she found were guys."
The mood turns dark, however, with the introduction of Patrick, a thirtysomething Wall Street trader who collects women and spends his evenings tying them up in his room. In short order the book's easy comedy is torqued into something more dramatic by Patrick's descent into violence. That Schickler doesn't play to his strengths is not necessarily a bad thing: one admires a writer who reaches beyond facility to something more difficult. But the transition from lighthearted sexual ronde to dirty realism is a bit bumpy. On the other hand, the novel's picture of a dark, desire-ridden Manhattan is an attractively seductive slice of escapism. The linked-stories format gives rise to a feeling of multiplicity, which is just the right tone for a book about a city crowded with pleasures. Describing James, a love-struck young accountant, Schickler writes: "His mind tonight was on the fine and the illicit pleasures of the planet, on their merits and dispersement. Some people cut daisies, thought James. Some visit Wales, or choose cocaine, or dig latrines for the poor and the weak." Everyone, it seems, is after something different. But it's desire itself that interests the author of Kissing in Manhattan. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
Hilarious, sexy, and deeply tender,
Kissing in Manhattan was one of the most celebrated debuts in recent years. Acclaimed author David Schickler’s collection of linked stories follows a troupe of love-hungry urbanites through a charmed metropolis and into the Preemption--a mythic Manhattan apartment building. The Preemption sets the stage for a romantic fantasy as exuberant, dark, and dazzling as the city it occupies. Behind closed doors, the paths of an improbable cast of tenants--a seductive perfume heiress; a crabby, misunderstood actor; a preternaturally sharp-sighted priest--tangle and cross, while a perilous love triangle builds around three characters:
James Branch, a shy young accountant with an unusual love for the Preemption’s antique elevator, and a strange destiny...
Patrick Rigg, a Wall Street lothario who soothes his pain by seducing
beautiful women, carrying a gun, and attending the nightly sermons of a foreboding priest...
Rally McWilliams, a fetching, hopeful young writer who roams the city at night, searching for the soulmate she believes in but can’t find...
Charged with joy and a deadly sense of humor,
Kissing in Manhattan is a daring new writer’s vision of a world where men and women, good and evil, love and sex, meet, battle, and embrace on every street corner.

"Forget mere sex and the city... Kissing in Manhattan features die-hard romantic strivers in a surreal turn-of-the-millennium New York ruled by the spirit of improbable happy endings."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
"Schickler has a wild, out-of-left-field dramatic imagination that's really fresh. The way his characters take you, as well as one another, by surprise is terrific fun."
NEW YORK MAGAZINE
"Like figures in a strange, spiky, urban frieze, the characters of Schickler's striking debut novel-in-stories pose, strut and cross paths in a darkly romantic, surreal Manhattan. ... Schickler is a fabulist for the 21st century, a skewed Scheherazade."
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
"One of the most charming and memorable debuts this year is Kissing in Manhattan.... Tenderness and darkness are around every corner ... There are Gothic overtones, bits of magical realism, moments of true eroticism with hints of danger.... This tender, lovely book and these love-starved and hopeful individuals linger like a reader's dream."
THE NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE
"With these wonderfully haunting, strange, and hilarious stories, David Schickler has established himself as a major new voice in American fiction."
RON HANSEN, AUTHOR OF MARIETTE IN ECSTACY AND HITLER'S NIECE
"Schickler's playfully alive voice is uniquely his own -- sprightly, exact, Herculean in all the fundamentals. What talent! From beginning to end, here you have some of the most pleasurable storytelling of this -- or any -- year."

Great collection of short stories........2007-10-03
A collection of short stories that for the most part are interconnected in some way. They all take place in New York City. Reccommend greatly!
Great Summer Read.......2007-06-13
Very interesting. Very well written. Fasinating thinking. A must for all singles, big city dwellers and people who love to read great authors!
Amazing Book.......2007-01-16
This was an awesome book...A little on the quirky side, but really a great read!
Well crafted, but very odd..........2006-11-18
'KISSING IN MANHATTAN' consists of eleven interwoven short stories revolving around the lives and loves of young Manhattanites all of whom either live in or come in contact with the fictional Preemption apartment building. The stories are well thought out and very well crafted in that they all connect to one another in some way. However the doomed love triangle between the reticent James Branch, dark, brooding and potentially dangerous Patrick Rigg and the sensuous Rally McWilliams steals the focus of the book and keeps the reader wanting more.
While I did enjoy some of these odd little short stories all I really wanted to do was get back to the ones centering on James, Patrick and Rally which is where the novel within these short stories lies. And although I very much enjoyed how towards the end even the short stories focusing on other characters ultimately revolved around this awkward threesome, I think the book would have been better suited as a novel just centering on these three eccentric characters. Overall, 'KISSING IN MANHATTAN' is an enjoyable collection that will definitely keep the reader on his or her toes. 3 1/2 stars!
Short Stories Creating a Larger Tableau.......2006-08-16
This debut collection of short stories (maybe it's better to refer to is as a novel) does a wonderful job of blending together the lives of a group of young New Yorkers living in the Preemption Building on the Upper West Side. All of the stories center around relationships, both good and bad, and culminate in a startling conclusion involving a gun, a priest, and a love triangle between three of the most unlikely people. What makes the work so vivid in my mind is the way that you learn more about each of the characters not from their own stories, but from the stories of the people around them. I especially loved the sort of magical realism that Schickler infuses the novel with and it reminded me of a cross between Auster and Marquez. This is definitely a solid debut and one that will keep you entertained.

Book Description
A wickedly irresistible romp.
After the death of her father, Georgiana Hartley returns home to England --- only to be confronted with the boorish advances of her cousin. Knowing no one, she flees to Dominic Ridgely's state, hoping the nobleman will bestow a neighborly kindness upon her.
The viscount hears Georgiana's plea to find her a position as a lady's companion with barely concealed ill humor. A lovely innocent such as Miss Hartley subjected to that wretched existence? The very idea is preposterous. Instead, he takes matters into his own hands, introducing her to his sister's influence.
Suddenly Georgiana is transformed into a lady, charming the ton and cultivating a bevy of suitors. Everything is unfolding according to Dominic's plan . . . until he realizes that he desires Georgiana for his own.

If I hadn't read other SL books..........2006-08-06
....I'd seriously wonder if the author was actually a man mascarading as a woman to sell to an almost exclusively-female audience. Every female character in this book was very weak, while the men were all-knowing. I could handle Georgiana being innocent, but many of the choices she makes (like trusting her cousin, whom she already knows to a slimeball) are indicative of sheer stupidity.
Dominic's (our hero) sister, Bella, was the worst. Despite having already given birth to one child (whom she inexplicably chooses to leave alone in the country with servants while she sits around in London, mostly bored, to be with her husband) it never even occurs to her that the chronic fatigue she suffers may stem from pregnancy. Both Dominic and Bella's husband (and every reader...I really can't see this as being a spoiler) "know" she is expecting long before she does!
I also agree with other reviewers that there was little chemistry between Georgiana and Dominic. I really didn't mind the fact that there was no sex....I would have liked some more heat though!
I really liked Devil's Bride, so I know Laurens is capable of producing strong and likeable feminine characters. However, even her better books seem to have the same flaw as other Regency authors --her lead male characters are near carbon copies of each other (i.e. absurdly handsome, intelligent and arrogant "reformed" rakes). Personally, I prefer Regency romance authors like Julia Quinn who continually provides strong, intelligent female characters and male love interests who are likeable and attractive but imperfect.
Needless to say, this book was a big disappointment. Its only saving grace, for me, is that I got it from a free book pile!
2.5 stars (slipt in the middle).......2006-07-23
i don't care if they didn't have sex blah blah blah or what ever else it just felt like the book was missing something..I don't know i guess if you never read the book before you should read it to judge for yourself...
Dissapointing.......2006-07-16
I grabbed this up without even looking at the back because I enjoyed the steamy Laurens Cynster novel All About Love and Devils Bride. But there is absolutely NO sex in this one. I at least expected one sex scene based on what I had read in her other novels but this one had NONE. The story was also a little drawn out and I never really felt the characters had much in common.
Terrible.......2004-05-10
I picked this book up, after barely reading the back cover, because I've read quite a few SL books and I have always really enjoyed them. However like many of the other reviewers I wish I hadn't. The book is boring. Besides the fact that there is no sex, (which I can deal with) there is also no sexual tension and no romance. Why on earth these two get together is beyond me. Georgina is supposed to be popular and vivacious but everytime she is w. Dominic she turns into a blathering idiot. Where's her backbone? And why on earth dominic would ever want to marry her is inexplicable. I would reccommend Stephanie Laurens to fans of the genre but stay away from her older stuff. I'm glad this was not the first book of hers I read, at least I know she can do better!
Well written, but I'm still disappointed..........2004-03-18
with the ending. It's my own fault, I guess, that I didn't check the publication date to see that this was one of her earlier works. I was expecting at least *one* trademark love scene, and I was perfectly willing for it to be after they married. But, alas, there wasn't one, and that threw a bucket of ice-cold water on what had been a nice build-up of sexual tension. So my overall feeling is one of indifference - I won't read it again, and that is something I have never said of her other works.

Venus on the Half Shell.......2007-05-26
A strange but humorous trip through the universe. This quick read will definately get you laughing.
silly by design.......2007-05-17
I agree with most ofthe positive reviews of this book. I would just like to add that the real fun of this book is the fact that it is a fictional work supposedly written by a fictional character. It was wonderful to finally sample the literary offering of Kilgore Trout. I think the story itself fits the image of Mr. Trout. Thhis is not an imitation of Vonnegut's style. It is an imagination of what one of Kilgore Trout's books would be like. I enjoyed it thoroughly from the lurid cover to the picture of the author on the back. Good stuff!!!!!
"When fiction reflects fiction" by Zvi Swerdlove.......2007-04-13
Thirty years ago I was browsing the science fiction section of a used book store in Jerusalem and fell across this book. I suddenly felt faint and was sure I was having some sort of psychotic episode. Having read several of Kurt Vonnegut's novels, I was aware that the author, Kilgore Trout, was a fictional character who wrote second-rate science fiction novels. How could he have written an actual book in the real world? Fortunately, the shop's owner had the explanation - that it was a pastiche written by Philip Jose Farmer in the style of Vonnegut. Naturally I bought and read it, relieved that my sanity was not threatened.
The book itself is fun for those familiar with Vonnegut's novels, though certainly not a great work of literature.
By the way, I am writing this on April 13, 2007, just a few minutes after having heard the announcement of Vonnegut's death.
So it goes.
Entertaining enough.......2007-03-06
I bought this book simply because I'm a huge fan of Vonnegut's fiction, and I was hoping for something similar. "Trout"'s style, I would say is sort of a mix between Vonnegut and Pratchett. The story, however, is a space-based Gulliver's travels, where the main character hops from planet to planet meeting weird aliens. The kind of weird aliens people thought of back then (70's) when they didn't really put much thought into it - like bad Star Trek episodes. Combine this with the author's fixation on describing the alien sex and bathroom usage, and the book seems fairly mediocre overall.
Vonnegut Rocks.......2007-02-12
For any Vonnegut fan, this is a must read. The stories of Kilgore Trout run throughout his body of works and well...this is the icing on the cake. It not only aquaints the reader with Kilgores style and panache, but also answers the age-old question of the meaning of life.

Anagrams ,anagrams.......2005-06-01
I have never seen anybody else talk about anagrams in this book. So I'll give some of my observations. Robot "Chworktap"=Patchwork is an easy one. Not so much harder are "Tunc" and "Angavi" (These I can not post here obviously). And then comes "Utapal" ( Remember Gulliver's Travels and Laputa?) . And my favorite is dog Anubis ( Remember he named the dog Anubis after the dog ate Rameses mummy and had diarrhea and vomited at the same time, so now "Bi ...." should be obvious. What are your observations?
Venus on the Half Shell was written by Philip Jose Farmer.......2000-02-19
Hi, I just wanted to try and set some people strait on who was/is the author of Venus on the Half Shell. It was written by Philip Jose Farmer under the name of Kilgore Trout. Trout was a character of Kurt Vonnegut and so many people think it was written by Vonnegut. If you liked Venus, please try any of Farmers 6o sum books. They are all written with the same excitement, adventure, and humor.
The funniest book you'll ever read, and more..........2000-02-03
Written by Kurt Vonnegut under the name of his alter-ego Kilgore Trout, this book is an absolute masterpiece. When I first read it a couple of years ago, I thought it was simply a great comedy and parody of a sci-fi novel, but now with a few more years' perspective (and I like to think) maturity, I have found much meaning which I missed the first time around.
This book comments on everything -- morals, ethics, philosophy, religion, creation, sexism, racism, politics, government, friendship, love, the past, the future, and everything. And it isn't boring, it's instead typical of Vonnegut in that it's a fast-paced romp through the materiel. This book will leave you rolling on the floor laughing, while at the same time reconsidering your point of view on everything.
This book is a must read, and I hope they reprint it soon.
Religion and Science Whow What a Concept.......1999-09-28
I don't know if Kilgore Trout is still writing or even alive but his view or life's questions are refreshing and very thought provoking in at least the fact that Religion and Politics loose perspective in any culture and Science has no parallel to either. Science and sentience and religion are linked as well as evolution and god. This book encompasses both philosophys and brings meaning to more than both. I enjoyed reading it and would strongly hope that in this day it will be brought back into print. We need a very clear mind to face the next milennium and this story is one that can put life and the universe in perspective. He was before his time and should be grouped with Heinlan, Douglas Adams, and Kurt Vonegut.
If you can get a copy either at your local library or at a used bookstore do so. It is well worth reading for a mature or even young soul. Brain candy for us old folks.
Like all of Farmers works, this is a masterpeice..........1998-10-14
Like all of Farmers works, this is a masterpeice of the imagination. I was lucky enough to find a first printing copy of this book written as Kilgore Trout in a small used bookstore in Rockland Maine, way down in the basement. It cost me a whole dollar. It is now safely resting with the other 60 or so books I have by Mr. Farmer. I am also excited to say that Mr. Farmer was so kind in signing this and a few other books for me. Vesun on the Half Shelf, like all of his works, transports you to a better time or place (or at least a more exciting time or place). Thank you for being you Mr. Farmer.
Product Description
Venus on the Half-Shell and Others collects for the first time the best of the best from Philip José Farmer's scintillating "fictional-author period."
In the mid-1970s a fever-pitched furor was created when an actual novel purported to be by Kilgore Trout -- the sadsack science fiction writer who appears as a character in the works of Kurt Vonnegut -- materialized on the bookracks, complete with a mysterious back cover photo of the author looking like a bearded vagabond sage. Debate raged as to who had truly written Venus on the Half-Shell. Was it Vonnegut himself, or perhaps Theodore Sturgeon, rumored to have been the inspiration for Trout? Or did Kilgore Trout really exist? Just as one respected newspaper published an article "proving" that Vonnegut had written the book, the Hugo Award-winning science fiction author Philip Jose Farmer announced he was the true author.
The controversial Kilgore Trout episode was neither the first nor the last time Farmer would impishly slip out of his own skin and assume the persona of another author. In Venus on the Half-Shell and Others, Philip Jose Farmer transforms himself into fictional personalities as compelling as they are diverse: Cordwainer Bird, Paul Chapin, Rod Keen, Harry "Bunny" Manders, Leo Queequeg Tincrowdor, John H. Watson, M.D. and even the real-life author William S. Burroughs (writing his own version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Jungle Lord!). Also included is the original version of Farmer's classic Sherlock Holmes/Lord Greystoke pastiche The Adventure of the Peerless Peer, back in print for the first time in over thirty years.
A unique collection, Venus on the Half-Shell and Others showcases the grand imagination of one of science fiction's most resourceful and creative minds.
Book Description
As a teacher of meditation, Andrew Weiss found that students responded best when he broke down the process of mindfulness into discrete and progressive steps. Knowing that most people had little time to devote to meditation, he also made it his priority to teach the direct application of mindfulness to daily life. Through the years, he developed a series of handouts based on simple steps that form the basis of this book. Intended for laypeople practicing in their work and family lives without the luxury of long meditation retreats, Beginning Mindfulness is deeply rooted in Buddhist practice but remains unbound by one particular Buddhist tradition. Weiss skillfully blends the traditions of his Korean and Vietnamese teachers as well as Hindu yogic methods to create a meditation manual that is both practical and inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent practical guide.......2007-01-16
This book has a lot of great ideas for ways to practice mindfulness. You don't need to know a lot about the theory of mindfulness to benefit from the exercises in this book and the suggestions are quite practical and easy to incorporate into every day activities.
Great introduction to mindfulness practice.......2007-01-11
I first found this book in my local library, but after finishing it knew that I had to have a copy. It's one of the most practical mindfulness/meditation courses I've ever encountered. This offers plenty of techniques for fitting meditation and daily life mindfulness into a busy schedule, while not skimming over the more intense practices. It would probably be of most use to someone using it in a group, as that would give more potential for feedback, but it's still an excellent resource for a solitary meditator.
A mindfulness home program .......2005-06-01
This book offers a structured, ten week course in learning the way of mindfulness as a spiritual practice. Because of this, I find it useful. It is good for the very new person, and for those like myself who are studying without yet having a teacher and who may not be naturally self-disciplined.
It begins with a four week section designed so the reader knows how to set up the basic elements - breathing, sitting meditatin, daily life practices and such, both formally and informally. After this phase is completed, the student will have the basics as part of a schedule and can move on.
In the fifth through eighth weeks, the student learns to focus on mindfullness of body, feelings, thinking and objects of mind (this last chapter focuses on thoughts, feelings, or object of perception which our mind is focusing on - and includes mindful conversation and deep listening).
In the third section, weeks nine and ten, one practices loving kindness and compassion.
At the beginning of each section there are two guided meditations you can use, breathing in, breathing out (and specific sentences to help guide you)
The final section has ways to continue this.
This book is very good as a help to those working alone. A good-sized book, it offers over 200 pages of instructions, not including introduction, appendix, index and other comments. It is a book I can use over and over...someday I'll grow out of it but not just yet.
The Essential Basic Guide to Meditation.......2004-04-25
Accessible, simple, straightforward -- this is the sort of meditation instruction book that Andrew Weiss offers. It's not preachy, doesn't profess to offer answers. Rather, it offers a direct way into what some consider a difficult, even unattainable practice. Mindfulness is a miracle, Thich Nhat Hanh says and to be present to what is actually happening -- pleasant or unpleasant -- is a great accomplisment. To be present for another person is a great gift. It's what our partners, children and friends really want -- our true presence. Here's a guide about how to get here.
So, in this book, there is a path laid out, with infinite variations possible, for bringing more mindfulness into the lives of individuals, families and communities. Goodness knows we need guides like this in these times of fear, violence and uncertainty. They steady us on the path and allow us to discover our connections with all beings.
Practical guide to mindful living.......2004-04-23
If you are a beginner to meditation, Andrew's book is an easy to read set of lessons, which will help you stay in the present and stay aware of your own body and the world around you. For those of you who have been practicing meditation for awhile and feel stuck or loosing interest in meditation; this book contains a wonderful set of tools that will improve one's meditation practice and in becoming more mindful and aware of every aspect of your daily life.
The book reflects the same lessons, practical guidance and methods that Andrew offers in his own meditation classes. I've found his lessons in Metta meditation and Tonglin breath very helpful in providing loving kindness, and healing to myself and others. He has changed my life and the book is a wonderful reference.
