5 out of 5 stars I just love Judes books.......2006-12-01

This is the very first book I read by Deveraux.I have since then read almost all of her books. Most being enjoyable.I just loved this book.Adam Montgomery is such a hunk.Of coarse Jude fans what montgomery isn't.Darcey was very intersting and funny. The first of a trilogy

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing and enjoyable fast read.......2006-11-13

This trilogy takes you into another world. Whike the first book is the best one, you still have to read the entire trilogy to experience all the magic this story has to offer. The books start out slow, but become hard to put down once you get into them.

3 out of 5 stars Forever is a wonderful mix of mystery and fairy tale.......2006-07-22

Adam Montgomery, at age three, was kidnapped by a powerful witch and branded. However, the witch was after his sister and when she realized her mistake, she locked Adam in a metal box to be disposed later. But Adam escaped. Unfortunately, his mother, who was then pregnant with his sister, was captured along with his father. The witch murdered them both; the mother disposed of later after she had the baby.

Adam spends the rest of his life recovering from his ordeal and then decides to do something about it. He intends to do away with the witch, find his sister, and find out what happened to his parents.

With the help of a powerful clairvoyant, Adam hires Darci T. Monroe, a girl of, seemingly, no consequence with an air of innocence and naivety about her. But she isn't what she seems, for Darci has a very powerful psychic ability that will help Adam get rid of the witch and unravel the mystery to his parents' deaths.

I'm not sure I liked this book. The plot line was a bit far-fetched and not very believable. However, Darci is a fun character and it's hard not to like her. But there is a childishness about her that can grate on your nerves.

I'm a big fan of Ms Deveraux and despite this how weak this story is it won't dampen my enthusiasm for her works.

4 out of 5 stars first and best of the trilogy.......2006-07-19

An enjoyable easy read.
the highlight of this book is Darci. What a wacky, fun, and unusual character.
Her adversarial relationship with Adam, is a bit Hepburn/Tracy like. We know they are attracted to each other right away. But it takes a bit of sparring before they realize it.
Paranormal aspects in this novel are at times lighthearted and at times frightening.
There are some seriously dark themes, kidnapping, torture, but they are written about in such a way, they don't get too dark.
She would have leaned into the horror genre if she placed to much focus in that direction.
The ending seems a bit rushed.
All in all a good read.

1 out of 5 stars very disapointed.......2005-07-07

I bought this book as a replacement for a book I'd borrowed from a friend and my cat had chewed the corners on.This book was listed in "exellent" condition. It was in much worse condition than the one my cat chewed on.So as I went out to buy yet another copy of the book,I knew I'd learned a valuable lesson about trusting internet shopping.

i have not read this book and have no intensions of doing so. I read the review written by "Alyce In Wonderland "The Looking Glass" and I do NOT understand all the other 5 star reviews. how can this be? a hero who seduces the heroine then watches her get beaten and does nothing about it? leaves her with said abusive father? etc., etc. this is NOT the kind of guy i find romantic AT ALL, this is a boneheaded numskull schmuck. and i have NO desire to read about him. he deserves to get beaten, not get the girl! unless "Alyce" 's description of the plotline is all wrong, what i want to know is, why do so many of the other reviewers like book, much less love it?

3 out of 5 stars The True "Valiant Knight" in this story is the leading female. The leading male was a wimp. Still, a gripping story........2006-06-21

Personally, I like a man who will put his life on the line for the sake of saving the woman he loves. However, in this story, it is the leading lady (Ainslee) who throws herself in the line of fire twice to save the leading man (Gabel.) Gabel actually hands her over to her abusive father because he wants to marry a woman who will bring land and money into the marriage. Not my idea of a "hero." He then sits and watches while her father beats her nearly to death. He never bothers to try and help her escape her father's keep. He leaves her there for weeks, during which she is beaten twice more, attacked by her father with his sword, and thrown into his dungeon for over a week without food. It seems to me that a man in love would risk trying to help her escape, especially after watching the first beating. Gabel does not fit my idea of "valiance." Ainslee, however, risked her own life several times to save both Gabel and the people of her clan.

        The story:

Ainslee and her best friend Ronald are captured by Gabel and his knights. Gabel has been charged by the king to round up and clean out Ainslee's clan. He decides to use Ainslee as a ransom tool against her father, the laird of Kengarvey.

The laird doesn't think his daughter is worth ransoming, so Ainslee is left in Gabels care for a few months. During that time the two fall in love. (In usual Hannah Howell style, they each spend the whole book thinking the other doesn't love them back. This idea is getting redundant in Howell's books.) Gabel takes her virginity, all the while never planning to honor her. He wants a wife with a title, land and money.

Finally, Ainslee's father agrees to a treaty ransom. He will meet Gabel at a river to make the exchange. However, when they arrive Ainslee recognizes her father's plan to attack Gabel and his men. She knocks Gabel nearly out of his saddle, while throwing herself into the aim of her father's archers. Gabel and his men escape back across the river, leaving Ainslee to attract the attention of the archers. Gabel then watches as Ainslee's father drags her from her horse and beats her unconscious. Gabel and his men ride away.

Once back at her father's keep, Ainslee tries to convince her father to honor the treaty which will save the lives of their clan. For this, her father beats her again. Ainslee decides there is nothing she can do but escape her father's keep. He finds her and tries to kill her with his sword. Ainslee's brothers step in and stop the murder. Her father still wants her dead, so he throws her in the dungeon without food. Ainslee's brother sneaks food to her every couple of days to keep her alive.

Under the king's orders, Gabel attacks Kengarvey. He tries to spare as many innocent lives as possible. However, one of the king's other men wants to slaughter them all. When Gabel stops him, the two men engage in a sword battle. Gabel wins but spares the man's life. Angry, the man commands one of his archers to kill Gabel. Ainslee runs to push Gabel out of the way, taking the arrow in her own shoulder. After two harsh beatings and starvation at the hands of her father, Ainslee is weak. Gabel fears she may not be strong enough to survive the fever that her wound causes. He takes her back to his own keep in hopes of giving her better care. He waits by her side for days, praying she will live. If she survives, he will ask her forgiveness and ask her marry him.

        4 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2006-02-07

This is the first book that I have read from this author and it won't be my last. It's been a while since I've read a book this good from begginning to end. I loved the secondary characters and hopefully there is a book about there story.

        4 out of 5 stars A fast-paced and exciting medieval Scottish romance - 4.5 stars.......2005-11-19

In the Scottish Highlands in the year of 1210, no clan is more hated than the MacNairns. The most abhorred laird in Scotland, Duggan MacNairn has finally earned the king's wrath, and now has one last chance to save his life and his people's. Enter the king's man, Sir Gabel del Amalville. Sent to put a stop to the rebellious clan, Gabel chances upon Duggan's youngest daughter and takes her hostage.

With her friend injured and unwilling to leave him on his own, Ainslee MacNairn has no choice but to rely on her fighting skills to avoid capture. But the moment she sees the fearsome and powerful knight, she knows that capture is inevitable. But what troubled her most was the feeling that the sight of Gabel stirred in her; a feeling so foreign that she fears what the outcome of it will be. As for Gabel, not only is he captivated by Ainslee's beauty, but by her courage and strength. But having suffered a woman's treachery long ago, he knows that he must keep his distance from the enchanting and intriguing woman who can easily get to his heart.

When picking up a Hannah Howell book, I always expect passion, intrigue and lots of adventure. MY VALIANT KNIGHT is certainly no exception. Right from the start, the witty dialogues and lively banter between the main characters entertained me. Ainslee is such a delight - strong-willed and courageous, but never stubborn, beautiful, kind-hearted and fiercely loyal. It was sad to see how she grew up hated by her own father, and this is what makes her so admirable, seeing the woman she grew up to be with only a crippled servant's guidance and love. With Gabel, learning of the emotional scars he still carries after being betrayed by a woman he once loved just had me wishing that he would quickly open his eyes and see the gift that fate has given him. And when he finally does, I knew that I was in for some exciting scenes when the knight in shining armor rescues the damsel in distress from the clutches of her evil father!

With likeable and fun characters and an exciting storyline, this is another fantastic book from the author who has written some of the most enjoyable Scottish romances I have read. This is almost as great as AMBER FLAME and a fast and entertaining read.

                    CHAPTER 1

                    Tuesday 1st February

"Out of my way." Major Jalal jabbed his elbow into the kidney of one photographer and shouldered another into the gutter, watching as frozen slush filled the man's scruffy shoes. Ten paces at most separated the limo from the door of the casino but five photographers barred the way. Well, three now.

"Chill," his boss said with a broad smile. The major wasn't sure if that was an order or if His Excellency was commenting on New York's weather. So Jalal kept his reply to a nod, which covered both bases.

                    "Prince . . ."

                    "Over here . . ."

His Excellency Kashif Pasha was used to catcalls and noise from nasrani paparazzi, who whistled at him like he was someone's dog. It was the only thing he hated about coming to New York.

                    "Look this way."

Kashif Pasha made the mistake of doing just that and found himself staring into the smirking face of Charlie Vanhie, a WASP reporter he'd had the misfortune to meet at least three times before.
"Tell us about your plan to throw a dinner to celebrate your parents' fiftieth wedding anniversary . . ."
Having made the mistake of looking at Charlie Vanhie, the pasha then compounded his error by actually speaking to the man. "Forty-fifth," he corrected, "it will be their forty-fifth."
"What makes you think the Emir will turn up?"
Kashif Pasha stared at the man.
"Given that he won't even be in the same room as your mother. What was it he called her . . . ?"
Major Jalal began to move towards the speaker but His Excellency held up one hand. "Leave it," he told the major. "Let me handle this."

Around the time Kashif Pasha stood on a snow-covered sidewalk in Manhattan, bathed in the light of a flashgun, a small girl sat at a cheap plastic laptop. She was preparing to answer a long list of EQ questions, most of them multiple choice.

Draped around the girl's neck was a grey kitten worn like a collar. Actually, Ifritah was almost six months old but she still behaved like a kitten so that was how the girl thought of her.

Lady Hana al-Mansur, wrote the girl in a box marked name. Then she deleted it and typed Hani instead. There was also a box for her age but this was more problematic since no one was quite sure. She chose 10, because either she was about to become ten, or she was ten already, in which case she'd be eleven in less than a week.

In the box marked nationality Hani wrote Ottoman and when the software rejected this she wrote it again. So then the computer offered her a long list of alternatives which she rejected, finally compromising on Other.

The room where Hani sat was in a house five thousand five hundred and seven miles from New York. In El Iskandryia. A city on the left-hand edge of the Nile Delta. Right at the top where the delta jutted out into the Mediterranean.

The madersa looked in on itself in that way many North African houses do. It was old and near decrepit in places. With a grand entrance onto Rue Sherrif at the front and an unmarked door that led out to an alley at the rear.

Guarding this door was a porter named Khartoum, because the city of Khartoum was where he came from and he'd refused to reveal any other. He smoked cigars backwards, with the lit end inside his mouth and had given Hani a tiny silver hand on a thread of cotton to help her do well in the tests.

This impressed Hani greatly and it went, almost without saying, that Hani would rather have had Khartoum with her than the cat but her uncle, the bey, had forbidden it. Not crossly. Just firmly. Because the box containing the test stated that all computers were to be off-line and no other people were to be in the room when the test was taken.

First off was an easy question abo

The assassination attempt using a poisonous snake could have come from anyone who had access to Emir Moncef. The viper bites his calf, but he survives because his twelve year old son witnessed the incident and screamed for help. His wife and his heir believe the obvious culprit is either a family member, an un-loyal servant, or another member of the inner retinue. However, an unrecognized son by a different woman Kashif Pasha believes the NR is behind the assault.

To protect the Emir and to uncover the assassin, former cop turned private investigator Ashraf Bey, who may be another unacknowledged offspring of the prolific Emir is hired. The genetically altered Ashraf struggles to uncover who wants the Emir dead; he leans towards the North African rebellion as the source so he goes undercover as a laborer in the lair of the enemy the metropolis of El Iskandryia while his maybe ten years old niece Hana al-Mansour better known as Hani decides to become Uncle Raf's "apprentice".

The Third Arabesk alternate history Ottoman Empire Noir (see PASHAZADE AND EFFENDI) is a terrific who-done-it starring a fabulous hard boiled sleuth who is softened by his niece. The story paints quite a vivid picture of a world in which the Ottoman Empire still exists in the twenty-first century. The complex sty line takes the audience all over from Manhattan to the Ifriqiy Desert to El Iskandryia and elsewhere without missing a beat so that the reader knows this is the real stuff. Reading the previous novels would be worth the effort as they are amongst the best in the sub-genre, Jon Courtenay Grimwood cleverly intertwines the key elements into this excellent entry. FELAHEEN makes three winners in a row.

The connection with our spirit is like a phone line, explains Christina Baldwin in The Seven Whispers. "Sometimes I turn the ringer off. Sometimes I ignore the ringing. Sometimes I pick up the phone with suspicion. Sometimes I get impatient with the interruption." The irony, of course, is that "unlike a lot of other calls, the one from Spirit is the one we are hoping to receive." Baldwin (Life's Companion) excels in helping readers converse with the divine. Here, she devotes a chapter to each of the "Seven Whispers of spiritual commonsense":
                          1) Maintain peace of mind ("the cornerstone of a spiritual life")
                          2) Move at the pace of guidance ("rehumanize our speed of life")
                          3) Practice certainty of purpose ("a commitment to figuring out why we are here and what we are going to do about it")
                          4) Surrender to surprise (this helps us "practice the resilience we need to respond to whatever life offers")
                          5) Ask for what you need and offer what you can ("become spiritual traders of life's energy, time and abundance")
                          6) Love the folks in front of you ("look for the good in people even if we don't think it's there")
                          7) Return to the world (remove yourself from the simulated world and "return to the world of the body, the senses, the world of Nature")

This is a compact book, packed with a wise woman's spiritual homilies. While no one can make Spirit phone home more often, Seven Whispers will certainly eliminate the static and make for a better connection. --Gail Hudson

                          Book Description

In this eloquent work, self-exploration pioneer Christina Baldwin leads readers of all spiritual persuasions to listen intentionally to the voice within their soul: the voice of spirit. She does this by sharing seven meditative phrases — the wisdom gained from listening to her own inner spirit. Each chapter is built around one of these core phrases, and examples include "Maintain peace of mind," "Surrender to surprises," and "Ask for what I need and offer what I can." After years of bringing spirituality to others through circle meetings, seminars, and journal writing, Baldwin offers her insight to a wider audience with this compelling and accessible book.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to the Whispers as Spiritual Practice.......2006-12-24

After reading Christina Baldwin's Whispers several months ago, I find myself coming back to it on a regular basis. Comapnioned by her book I am integrating the seven truths, the whispers, into my daily practice. Of the seven, the most persistent whisper for me is "Move at the pace of guidance." I am discovering how to move through life at the cadence of my inner knowing, honoring my wisdom, my gifts, and those of others. Christina's book is gently powerful, inviting the reader into that space where we recognize the "voice that invites a dialogue only we can hear."
As a clergywoman I have recommended the book for small group study. As a counselor I refer clients to it regularly. And personally, I feel that the holy is whispering to me through Christina's words.

Christina Baldwin's "The Seven Whispers" has become a cornerstone text in my life. Rich with practical spiritual wisdom, Baldwin's stories and suggestions teach us how we might be more authentic people who can create a compassionate world. I've even started a Seven Whispers Study Circle so that friends and I can go deeper into each "whisper" and emerge the better for it. Thank you, Christina Baldwin!!!

I love Christina Baldwin's work and the way she is able to incorporate spirituality in writing and daily life without dictating a certain dogma. Her book is a wonderful boost to anyone's spiritual practice.

What I love about this book is that weeks later I can still remember Baldwin's seven whispers and have been able to incorporate them into my busy life. I know I should be doing a better job at whisper #2, "Move at the pace of guidance," but even at the pace I'm moving I find these lovely sayings and the essays that accompany them reside in my mind. Many times a day they float to the surface of my mind and help me stay connected to spirit all week long. This book lives on my bedside table and I read little paragraphs over and over. It's a great gift. I've bought half a dozen copies for people of different religious persuasions and they all like it as much as I do.
