"IT'LL MAKE FOR SOME MIGHTY FINE EATING."
--Fort Worth Star Telegram
After the tremendous success of her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and the beloved movie that followed, author Fannie Flagg received thousands of requests from all over the world asking for recipes from the little cafe of her Alabama childhood that was the model for the cafe in her novel. Now, she joyfully shares those recipes, in what may well be the first cookbook ever written by a satisfied customer rather than a cook! Inside you'll find wonderful recipes for:
* Skinless Fried Chicken * Pork Chops with Apples and Sweet Potatoes * Baked Ham and Pineapple Rings * Baked Turkey with Traditional Cornbread Dressing * Black-eyed Peas * Fried Okra * Creamed Onions * Broccoli Casserole * Southern Cream Gravy * Fried Catfish * Scalloped Oysters * Down Home Crab Cakes * Beaten Biscuits * Corn Pones * Lemon Ice Box Pie * Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie * And much more!
The recipes in Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook are all for delicious hearty happy food that comes with all sorts of things, from gravies to hot sauces (very often the secret's in the sauce). But most of all this food, and this book, comes with love.
"If you liked her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and if you liked the movie they made from that novel, you'll like this cookbook....It's funny, just like Flagg."
--Richmond Times-Dispatch
"Recommended...All the traditional dishes are here, along with the author's irreverent, irresistible commentary on Southern cooking and culture."

thumb's up for Fannie Flagg.......2007-03-23
She has captured the flavor of many dishes from my childhood!!
Down-to-earth recipes.......2007-01-23
Down-to-earth recipes, with easy to follow directions, have made this cookbook one of my favorites. No fancy names or haute cusine -- just good home cooking. Perfect for those who have a "meat and potatoes" family like mine.
Fun to read and fun to cook from.......2007-01-03
The stories are great and the recipes are down home and delicious.

Anyone who thinks southerners eat this stuff is another one. They eat fast food, macaroniandcheese and other prepared stuff. Also and extrawise, I gather from some of the reviewers that this food, contrarytofactwise if they DID eat it, is better than Yankee food. No. Food has gotten better in this country, to be positive for once. Except DownSouth.
DownSouth, you eat in ethnic restaurants. Just like in England.
This is 'THE' Down Home Cooking Companion.......2006-07-13
I have bought a ton of cookbooks and this one has got to be my favorite. When you want comfort food, this is the book. I have now made a lot of the recipies and they are all perfect. Their smothered hamburger steak with gravy and onions is our favorite at the moment. It is better than any restaurant I have been to. The stove top cooked pot roast melts in your mouth. The banana pudding was the favorite of a family reunion. I now have to make it and take it to every occasion. It makes a huge pan though so beware. You also no longer have to 'guess' on the amount of flour to use to make gravy. I grew up making buttermilk biscuits and cream gravy. This book has it it all. The pancakes are better than IHOP. I am also buying this book for friends and newlyweds. Oh, just one more thing. This is not a low fat, low calorie book. But who cares? When you want comfort food, you want the good stuff!
Book Description
She’s one of America’s fairest and funniest ladies. Actress and screenwriter, director and comedienne, Fannie Flagg is also a most accomplished and high-spirited author. Said Kirkus of her first book, Coming Attractions: “It’s subtitled ‘A wonderful novel’ and that’s exactly what it is.” Here is her second. Get ready, because it’s going to make you laugh (a lot), cry (a little), and care (forever).
What is it? It’s first the story of two women in the 1980s, of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women—of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth—who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.
And as the past unfolds, the present—for Evelyn and for us—will never quite be the same.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, with humor and drama—and with an ending that would fill with smiling tears the Whistle Stop Lake...if they only had a lake....

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.......2007-09-13
I love the movie version. Watch it about once a year. The book fleshes out the beloved characters very well. The book is a keepsake to be re-read often.
A Treasure.......2007-07-26
First off, the title is one of the best ever; and everything about this book lives up to it. Not a story that is reeled out in a straight cast but payed out slowly- under and over stories artfully woven. The character's names, the place, the times, the sounds of the train, the smells of all that fabulous pre-health conscious stuff frying on the grill. Boy oh boy!
The hope of life against the odds. This is one classic book.
I quite liked it!.......2007-07-18
Whenever I see a movie that was originally a book, I always want to read the book. Then i got on amazon and saw how many people were just lovin the book! So i got. And here I am, to make my own rave review.
Although the book jumps around alot, somehow I never got confused or annoyed. It just still fit seamlessly together, ninny telling her story and the rest being filled in. And then it tells the story of Evelyn, who's struggling with depression and her want to die. And then it goes through with her as she suddenly becomes angry, calling herself Towanda.
I'd say that it's definately worth the money.
Better than the movie!.......2007-07-09
Read the book, it's better than the movie and you will be glad you did.
Book.......2007-07-03
I loved it. I watched the movie first and now am reading the book and it's just fantastic!
Book Description
Lady Miranda Hartwell does not care what society thinks –– and if she wishes to employ a male personal secretary, she will! Of course it was not her specific intention to hire one as devastatingly handsome as Andrew "MacGregor." And she certainly never dreamed she'd be so attracted to this fiery cauldron of secrets –– who seems oddly, intriguingly familiar...
Andrew MacLeod is ready to abandon his life as a master spy, until he is talked into accepting one final assignment. Protecting the lovely, independent Miranda will not be easy, for the lady must notice how he is always there to rescue her from the increasingly troubling "accidents" in her home. And surely she can feel the heat of the passion she inspires within him –– which may prove a fatal distraction, now that he's drawn the unsuspecting beauty into a most dangerous game...

Capering without too much cop....well you know. .......2007-07-18
Finely paced always interesting with good dialogue.
Susan Sizemore serves a healthy period romance, with a twist of mystery.
Nicely paced with good dialogue and some excellent characters, I was pleasantly suprised with this novel, and have added author Sizemore to my TBP (to be purchased) auto list.
I particularly enjoyed the plausibility of the plot - inasmuch as I have become quite frustrated lately with the leap into bed of most of the leads in romance novels, the book never get more than 30 pages in (you neededn't pull me up over the exaggeration) before both characters are plunging and lunging & sweating up the sheets.
The depressed & repressed Andrew McLeod is on a mission to protect Miranda Hartwell (Lady) from unknown murderers - this could be drawn by her witnessing a traitors face, and the spy who has assigned Andrew this task certainly hopes so.
Watch the capers develop.
Different opinion...........2005-12-21
First, I should say that I love Susan Sizemore's vampire romance series (I Thirst for You, I Burn for You, I Hunger for You). I re-read those books often and am looking forward very much to the next book in that series.
So I bought Scandalous Miranda shortly after it came out, assuming I would enjoy it. I'm sorry to say that I found the plot predictable and the characters unconvincing. I figured out almost immediately who Dante was going to turn out to be, and could muster so little interest in the rest of the plot that I ended up just skimming the last half of the book to see how the author developed the romance, but I also found that uninteresting, probably because I never came to care about the characters.
fabulous Victorian espionage romantic suspense .......2005-11-30
In 1881 Italy, Andrew Macleod feels it is time come in from the cold and retire from the espionage life. He plans to complete his final assignment before going home to England to settle down. However, his mission falls apart and Lady Miranda Hartwell becomes collateral damage. Honor proscribes that Andrew delay his retirement to insure Miranda is safe.
In 1882 to protect Miranda he goes undercover in Kent, England as Andrew MacGregor and obtains the position of secretary to the woman he vows to protect as Miranda does the scandalous thing by hiring a man. However, being near Miranda proves more difficult than any project he has undertaken as his attraction to her is fierce. Still he hides his identity though she thinks he reminds her of her countryman whom she met in Italy when she was injured. As she begins to piece the puzzle together, an unknown culprit tries to kill her.
This is a fabulous Victorian espionage romantic suspense starring a Clark Kent-Superman type as the hero is willing to die to keep the woman he loves safe even as he blames himself for her predicament. The action-packed story line moves forward at an incredible pace as the audience anticipates the explosive climax while admiring SCANDALOUS MIRANDA for her intelligence and courage. Susan Sizemore is at her best with this late nineteenth century spy thriller.

Last in a 3-part series, I loved this series........2006-03-27
On the back cover: "WANTED: ONE WIFE. PRICE: TWO MILLION DOLLARS. Self-made and every inch a bachelor, Sydney entrepreneur Mike Stone has one month to get married--or he'll lose a business deal worth billions! He's confident he can find a bride for the right price... Natalie Fairlane, owner of the Wives Wanted dating agency, is appalled by her new client's proposition! But the fee Mike is willing to pay is very tempting. Plus, offering herself up for the job has nothing to do with how wickedly sexy she finds him...no, nothing at all!"
I really liked the characters of Mike & Natalie. They both had issues, and as happens so often in life, they kind of backed into love when they didn't expect it to happen.
This is the last in a 3-part series, and I recommend readers get the first two books and read them in succession, to get the full effect as it is meant to be. The little tidbits thrown in about the previous characters, now downgraded into secondary characters, will mean more then. Those two books are: #1, Richard's story, "Bought: One Bride." #2, Reece's story: "The Tycoon's Trophy Wife." I recommend them all. They are each different, so it is rather a challenge to choose a favorite. I love amnesia stories, which Reece's story has. I enjoyed how sweet a man Richard was in book #1. This last book here, with Mike having the coldest attitude of the 3 men, was great too, because all 3 stories culminated in this book, and I liked Natalie's tough attitude. All 3 books are very sexy!
Wives Wanted...if I weren't already married, I'd be making a bee-line for Natalie's dating service, that's for sure ;)

Book Description
>On October 11 the television star Jason Taverner is so famous that 30 million viewers eagerly watch his prime-time show. On October 12 Jason Taverner is not a has-been but a never-was -- a man who has lost not only his audience but all proof of his existence. And in the claustrophobic betrayal state of Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, loss of proof is synonyms with loss of life.
Taverner races to solve the riddle of his disappearance", immerses us in a horribly plausible Philip K. Dick United States in which everyone -- from a waiflike forger of identity cards to a surgically altered pleasure -- informs on everyone else, a world in which omniscient police have something to hide. His bleakly beautiful novel bores into the deepest bedrock self and plants a stick of dynamite at its center.

Sheesh.......2007-07-29
I have to admit that it appears that Amazon reviews suffer from the same problem as performance appraisals - everyone is outstanding. Too often I find that a book has lots of five and four-star reviews, only to find that, once read, the book just wasn't very good. And this book is not just not very good, it's no good at all. The writing is just so amateurish, the plot, as one of the other reviews suggested, is way full of holes, the ending, trite and completely disappointing. The book is an interesting idea that died on the vine.
So we have to understand that Dick was a little nutso to appreciate his work? Sorry. This may be a good example of therapy for a sick mind, but that doesn't make it a good book. Sheesh...
To balance all of the five-star reviews that, I think, are way off base, I give it one star. Come to think of it, forget balancing the five-star reviews. This book deserves one star on the merits.
A standard Dick work.......2007-03-18
Owning almost all Dick books and a lot of short stories, i find this volume a standard one. It starts off alright but then lapses a bit, until halfway through the book it again becomes interesting. The plot is underexposed which is too bad because it's an interesting one (different worlds being perceived by our brain under the influence of some drug). I was hoping for some great ending but alas, a short epilogue is what we get. Read Ubik if you want really gripping stuff!
Flow, My Tears........2007-01-17
Flow, My Tears is an amazing novel. It stars off as a very interesting thriller about a man trying to regain his identity, and evolves into a surreal sexual odysee(though without much sex go figure lol).
But in the end, to me at least, the novel is about one thing. The corruption of government. About the horrible things the Government does. About the iggnorance and justifications behind these acts, and about the governments lack of responsibility.
And when it come down to the actual ending of the book I find myself still thinking about it, wondering if I liked how everything came together or not(I'm ignoring the epiloge). But theres one thing I know for sure, the fact that I'm still thinking about it says alot about it's power.
Eclectic.......2006-09-17
Phillip K. Dick was eclectic before it was cool.
I read this several years ago and for some reason the title stayed with me long after the storyline and the particulars. When I saw it here on Amazon I was more than happy to purchase it for my ever-growing collection of books that can be read, reread, and then read again.
Flow my tears is a frightening journey for the main character - his world is collapsing around him, and PKD takes us right along for the ride. We journey into an unknown world of illegal activities, crazy people, drugs and... well, you'll just have to read for yourself. Needless to say, this is a great buy for a fan of PKD's work... or someone who is looking to explore one of his less well-known novels.
And as a bit of a teaser, the end of this book freaked me out!! In a good way, of course.
Read it for fun; then bask in the philosophy of [...].......2006-05-20
FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID is a drug induced romp through a future that has already happened. Or is it?
[...] dope, he thought. You can always tell when it hits you but never when it unhits, if it ever does. It impairs you forever or so you think so; you can't be sure. Maybe it never leaves. And they say, Hey man, your brain's burned out, and you say, maybe so. You can't be sure and you can't be not sure."
I have read other Philip K. Dick works and FLOW MY TEARS had been on my "to be read" list for years. I finally bought it just prior to a business trip that would include a half-dozen airport hours. The main (anti-hero) character, Jason Taverner, is everyman and no-man. As anyone familiar with Dick knows, he was ahead of his time, in the company of Heinlein, Bradbury, and Asimov. This story, with its "Police State" setting, is suddenly current and relevant to 2006. A quick and easy read on the surface, if consumed cerebrally, the twists and machinations that Dick works into the "two" worlds, reveal a startlingly philosophical look at what constitutes identity and reality.

LARGER BOOK DIMENSIONS EQUALS LARGER PRINT WHICH MAKES STUDY MORE PRODUCTIVE.
Good for research purposes.......2007-05-08
There is no point to owning this book unless you're researching Masonic ritual; many things here are outdated, and then since ritual varies (sometimes significantly) from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, it's not really very good as a "study guide" or even an expose. However, as a reference for the researcher, it's great - highly recommended, in fact!
The necessary study guide for Freemasonry period........2007-02-14
"Duncan's Ritual" is perfect. Needs no improvement. Written to help expose the secrets of Freemasonry. And now suggested reading of Masons everywhere. Easy to read (for Masonic ritual). And now available in a size small enough to fit into a large pocket! Great for those Freemasons and wannabe Freemasons on the go!
