"On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy." So begins E.B. White's classic meditation on that noisiest, most public of American cities. Written during the summer of 1948, well after the author and editor had taken up permanent residence in Maine, Here Is New York is a fond glance back at the city of his youth, when White was one of the "young worshipful beginners" who give New York its passionate character. It's also a tribute to the sheer implausibility of the place--the tangled infrastructure, the teeming humanity, the dearth of air and light. Much has changed since White wrote this essay, yet in a city "both changeless and changing" there are things here that will doubtless ring equally true 100 years from now. To wit, "New Yorkers temperamentally do not crave comfort and convenience--if they did they would live elsewhere."

Anyone who's ever cherished his essays--or even Charlotte's Web--knows that White is the most elegant of all possible stylists. There's not a sentence here that does not make itself felt right down to the reader's very bones. What would the author make of Giuliani's New York? Or of Times Square, Disney-style? It's hard to say for sure. But not even Planet Hollywood could ruin White's abiding sense of wonder: "The city is like poetry: it compresses all life ... into a small island and adds music and the accompaniment of internal engines." This lovely new edition marks the 100th anniversary of E.B. White's birth--cause for celebration indeed. --Mary Park

    Book Description

Perceptive, funny, and nostalgic, E.B. White's stroll around Manhattan remains the quintessential love letter to the city, written by one of America's foremost literary figures. The New York Times has named Here is New York one of the ten best books ever written about the metropolis, and The New Yorker calls it "the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city.

Anything by E. B. White is fine - he must have been quite young when he wrote this but I enjoyed reading it and getting a sense of what New York was like at that time - some of it is still true but much has changed.

5 out of 5 stars A Love Letter to New York City.......2006-04-24

HERE IS NEW YORK is a truly spectacular 1948 essay that originally appeared in Holiday magazine. Written by E.B. White and named one of the ten best books ever written about New York, this is a quick read that will leave you years later savoring White's timeless observations.

Writing in a hotel room during a sweltering heat wave, White takes the reader through the essence of New York City and its eight million inhabitants who he notes roughly fall into three groups: the natives, the commuters and the transplants.

Warning that "no one should come to New York unless he is willing to be lucky," White lovingly explains how the city is more a collection of thousands of small neighborhoods that implausibly operate independently of each other, completely oblivious to what is occurring only a few blocks away.

Though it was written almost 60 years ago, HERE IS NEW YORK is just as accurate today as the moment it was written. Yes, the city has changed but the basic structure of life in New York remains the same.

Overall HERE IS NEW YORK is a very positive book that will leave everyone feeling welcome and needed in America's biggest city. But eerily the book presciently warns that "a single flight of planes no bigger than a wedge of geese can quickly end this island fantasy, burn the towers, crumble the bridges, turn the underground passages into lethal passages, cremate the millions."

Though it was tough to read that passage right after 9/11 as I did, I still whole heartedly recommend HERE IS NEW YORK to anyone who lives in New York, commutes to and from there, or has just moved there and is now, as White observed, generating "enough heat and light to dwarf the Consolidated Edison Company."

Early to a party, I was looking at a friend's bookcase and pulled this slim volume from a shelf. After reading the first sentence, I knew I had to have it.

Originally published in 1949, E.B. White, who no longer lived in New York City, captured the soul and spirit of the place. Nothing has changed. At the time, the United Nations building was under construction, and the bombing of London was fresh in his mind. He ends the book with a vision that perfectly balances hope with danger, in words prescient of September 11 - I re-read those paragraphs on every anniversary, it has become my ritual.

But what originally drew me to the book is not only the truth and insight of White, but his style, his felicity of expression. The author of "The Elements of Style" certainly knew the rules, and knew when to break them, as well. The second paragraph ends with a run-on sentence 198 words long, a thrilling joy ride which itself demonstrates how impossible it is to capture, in prose, the enormity and importance of this city.

I agree with Russell Baker, this is "the finest portrait ever painted of the city."

    5 out of 5 stars Small Treasure.......2005-10-19

A tightly written prose essay. An appreciation of the city that was and is. Memories and images of things past and things enduring. The city of E.B. White. If you live her, love her or even dislike her this memoir will evoke strong recollections.
Short, incisive, majestic. A small treasure for those who love the great cities of the world.

    5 out of 5 stars A swell little essay.......2005-08-29

I bought a 1949 first edition of this and just loved holding the 4"x6" (or thereabouts) gem in my hands. It has a sepia "Fairchild Aerial Surveys" image of Manhattan on the cover, as well as blurbs calling E.B. White "swell" and "meaty" and "original, all wool and a yard wide." I'm just starting to learn that part of the pleasure of a book, occasionally, is its packaging - and this was a swell example. I barely know what to add to the other comments here about White's writings. If you know him only through his three beautifully crafted childrens' books, this is one place to start with his essays. Here is New York was originally written for Holiday magazine. You can read the essay (and, consequently, this book) in one sitting. The ideas here are admittedly romantic and, from my twenty-first-century perspective, sometimes a tad cloying. That said, White's sentences always deliver spare, direct ideas. He is truly a joy to read. If you love Manhattan as I do, you'll want to have this as part of your library, if only to be reminded every once in awhile that someone voiced your own feelings 60 years ago.

    Book Description

Veterinarian Brad Brown never knew what to expect when he was called out to a farm to deal with a sick cow or an injured horse. Invariably the cash-strapped farmer would say, "While you're here, Doc" and rattle off a list of surprise medical chores that weren't part of the original call. But whether he was trying to geld a spooked stallion in a blizzard or found himself in the middle of an all-out fracas involving a monkey's abscessed tooth and a shotgun, Dr. Brown took it in stride, with great affection for his four-legged patients as well as his two-legged clients. James Herriot, Baxter Black, and E. B. White rolled into one and wearing rubber boots, Brad Brown gives us a wonderful set of stories from the life of a country vet.

I discovered this book from a review in the Maine Sunday Telegram. "Small farms and their close, personal way of living... come alive for us in Brown's humorous, compassionate stories of struggling farm life."
You get first-hand accounts of the doc trying to save an ox that's choking on a too large potato or rescuing a cow from a love-struck moose. It's all told with enthusiasm and wry humor.

I highly recommend this book. It belongs in my collection along with all my James Herriot books! It is heartwarming and very funny. Also, Dr. Brown explains certain animal diseases and conditions in an down to earth, easy to understand way. I am a farmer and I found that I understand several diseases of our animals even better now. I only wish the book was longer. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it and I was very sorry to get to the last page. I wanted to read more of those wonderful animal stories. I would like to thank Dr. Brown for writing such a great book, and I sure hope he considers writing another one.

"Dr. Johnson’s book is far more than a how-to guide for constructing meaningful learning activities for students. It is the definitive treatise on the fundamental concepts of acquiring and transferring knowledge. This is an invaluable contribution."

      Montana State System

"This is a ‘must’ read for all teachers and administrators in their search for meaning. Elaine Johnson has artfully captured the essence of the ‘best practices’ conversation taking place in schools today by speaking directly to the heart of classroom experience."

Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is a system for teaching that is grounded in brain research. Brain research indicates that we learn best when we see meaning in new tasks and material, and we discover meaning when we are able to connect new information with our existing knowledge and experiences. Students learn best, according to neuroscience, when they can connect the content of academic lessons with the context of their own daily lives.

Johnson discusses the elements of the brain-compatible contextual teaching and learning system: making meaningful connections; investing school work with significance; self-regulated learning; collaboration; critical and creating thinking; nurturing the individual; reaching high standards; and using authentic assessment. Drawing on the practices of teachers in kindergarten through university, Johnson provides numerous examples of how to use each part of the CTL system.

Contextual Teaching and Learning: What it Is and Why It's Here to Stay is more than a handbook on precise steps to follow to help children of all abilities achieve high standards by joining academic lessons with their immediate context. This book also explains how the brain works, discusses why teachers need to pay attention to context, and makes a strong case for the need to teach students to think critically and creatively. This inspirational book urges educators to eliminate the student question: "Why do we have to learn this?" If the educators invest learning with meaning by relying on context, that question won't have to be asked.

5 out of 5 stars Filled with examples of CTL's success.......2002-04-13

Written for professional educators yet comprehensible and practical in its presentation toward non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject matter, Contextual Teaching And Learning by education and business consultant Elaine B. Johnson (Executive Director of MBM Associates) is a solid, definitive guide to what "Contextual Teaching And Learning" (CTL) is and how it can enable teachers from grade school through university levels help students achieve academic excellence. Filled with examples of CTL's success, strategies to best apply CTL, and a thorough outline of the basics and history of CTL, Contextual Teaching And Learning is a welcome and invaluable addition to professional and academic teacher education supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

      5 out of 5 stars Cutting-Edge Teaching.......2002-03-14

I just finished reading the paperback version (considerably less expensive)of Contextual Teaching and Learning. I found it extraordinarly helpful in understanding how to really facilitate learning both in and out of the classroom. Dr. Johnson clarifies CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) for all of us, and explains how to put it to use with students. The concept of CTL, because it is based on current brain research and uses biology and physics as well as psychology, carries the potential to revolutionize teaching practices.
Unlike most books on education, this one goes much deeper, getting into universal principles that govern the activities of every living thing on the planet. Nevertheless, it does not bore readers with complex theory or elevated scientific language. The book is accessible and exciting for anyone who is searching for new ways to motivate and excite students. Johnson, a teacher herself, communicates the science in understandable terms and constantly relates them to teaching experience.
A major premise of the book is that all learners learn best in an environment reflecting three foundational, universal principles: 1) interdependence, 2) differentiation, and 3) self-organization. She translates these principles into eight components of a rich learning environment; each one is given a chapter, fully explaining how each works and providing real-life examples.
The book is a gold mine of ideas, presented coherently and with a great deal of love for the process and the people who make it work.

5 out of 5 stars Contextual Teaching is Brain-Compatible.......2002-03-13

This paperback book is a "must" for all teachers who care about helping every student achieve excellence. It provides a clear, easy to follow explanation of how the brain learns. It offers practical examples from classrooms around the country, of brain-compatible teaching. It shows that the brain weaves patterns and makes connections in its search for meaning. Because the brain learns best when it makes connections to find meaning, teaching needs to place lessons in the context of students' own lives and experiences. When teaching occurs in context-is contextual-students will excel.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching in context: a Help to All Teachers.......2002-03-11

This is an excellent book for teachers in K through university. Available in paperback, it is a readable, engaging, well-researched discussion of the practices that make for great teaching.

The book illustrates that learning occurs when we discover meaning and that we discover meaning when we connect new information with things we already know. Aimed at helping ALL student achieve excellence in the classroom, "Contextual Teaching and Learning" explains how the human brain learns. It explains why certain teaching methods are brain-compatible and thus benefit students of all abilities. It explains that used together, these teaching methods constitute a holistic system that links lessons with students' daily lives, filling lessons with meaning.

Parents should read this book to understand the kinds of instruction they should seek for their children. Teachers should read the book to get concrete ideas about classroom practices. Those interested in the history of ideas should read it to find out why "context" matters to the human brain.

        Book Description

Although the field of bioethics is about 40 years old, sociologists are only now beginning to explore the ramifications of its appearance and growth. The View from Here presents the best of this new work, exploring: the profession of bioethics and its role in discussions about the means and ends of the life sciences; how ordinary questions become "bioethical" questions and why some bioethical issues fail to attract the attention of bioethicists; variations in the manifestations of bioethics in different countries and health systems; the relationship between social science and bioethics and the effect of the rise of bioethics on the field of medical sociology. The rich understanding of bioethics offered by this volume makes it an essential text for medical sociologists, medical anthropologists, bioethicists, and to the increasingly large audience of those interested in the relationship between the social sciences and bioethics.

            Book Description

This novel attempts to present a complete, unvarnished, and rounded portrait of the young manhood and education of a white American male, RICK STEVENS, in a mid-western state. It depicts his good qualities as well as his bad ones-his "warts." The span of his life covered is from infancy to twenty-nine years of age. The years are from 1928 until 1957. Parts of his life included are: his early childhood and boyhood growing up on a farm and in a small town in northeastern Ohio; persecution and verbal abuse by his stepfather; constant moral support by his mother; his extreme shyness and inability to socialize during his high school years, his lack of a father-figure and its effect upon his personality, his dubious sexual education; his voluntary service in the United States Army Quartermaster Corps (the peacetime Army from 1946 - 1949); his clerical and stenographic training and jobs in the Army; his achievement of the rank of Corporal and then Sergeant; his friendships with Army buddies; his long automobile trip with friends through the Western states; his college education (with help of the GI Bill) at the University of Virginia and Ohio State University; his friendship and romance with a southern lady; his college friendships; his failures and his successes; his college summer jobs on Great Lakes iron ore freighters; his education courses and preparation for a science teaching career (Glasgow College, Pa.); his love life and his sex life; his European trip with his best friend-a fellow sailor and college chum. Moreover, the novel deals with the nearly complete transmutation of a shy young man into a gregarious man. Rick Stevens was determined to overcome his shyness, break out of his shell, and find friends first in the Army and later in college. This novel depicts Rick becoming more of an actor than just a spectator. He was able to eliminate his laid-back passive behavior, and become a much more aggressive man-active, outgoing, generous, caring and fun-lo

5 out of 5 stars An Ohio Customer's Review: One of the Best Long Novels I've Read. .......2007-03-29

This was a long novel for me to read, but I always looked forward to picking up the book, finding my bookmark, and continue reading where I'd left off. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter--all the characters, their struggles, and glimpses into their lives. The book is well written and a real page-turner. I hope the author writes a sequel. I am looking forward to reading and learning more about this fascinating character--Rick Stevens--as well as the other people in his life. As I read, curled up on a sofa, on these dark and cold winter days, Rick Stevens along with all the other characters, seemed very real and human.

The novel begins with the narration of his mother Ida Bradley's struggles to make a new life for herself and her two children, Rick and Janet, after her recent divorce from an unfaithful husband. Her decision to marry her second husband, Judge Appleby, had a profound influence upon her life and that of her children.
Judge Appleby, the municipal court judge in Salem on the Lake, Ohio, was a descendent of a prestigious and wealthy family in that town; he could trace his ancestruy to the early 1800s when the Applebys were among the earliest settlers and extensive land holders; they owned land that became nearly half the town of Salem on the Lake. Despite his fairness and good work as a judge, Judge Appleby was a tyrant and an alcoholic at home. He largely ignored and verbally abused his stepson Rick Stevens; Rick never had a father he could love and respect. Rick later realized that his mother was the first and foremost angel who came to his rescue, comforted him, and let him know that he was a worthy person.

Rick was painfully shy in social and school situations. During most of his high school years, he never had any really close friends. After Rick's graduation from high school, the Judge informed him, "I have made no financial provisions for our further education." It was a bald and cruel statement. The judge's sister "Aunt Fannie" was appalled by the unkindness of her brother. She advised Rick to join the U.S. Army for three years so that, after his discharge, he would be eligible for the G.I Bill that would pay his college tuition and a monthly allowance for living expenses.

The novel thoroughly documents how Rick found good friends in the Army and college, how his pre-medical courses and his liberal arts studies and relationships with his Army buddies and college friends helped him to develop a mature outlook on life. Travels with friends in the Western United States and in Europe and England also helped to enrich and increase his knowledge. Atlast he felt free and was able to throw off the yoke of his stepfather's domination.

In short, this novel is an inspiring success story of a young man who struggled since early childhood to ovrcome advese conditions that could have prevented his eventual achievement of self-respect, dignity, tolerance of others, academic success, and the teaching of science (chemistry, physics, general science, geography) in public high schools. Since this novel is very realistic, there is not a complete resolution of all Rick's problems in the last chapter when he is 29 yeas old. Yet I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the progress he made during his young manhood and eduaction. I hated to reach the end of the novel and look forward eagerly to its sequel.

                Book Description

The war between three armies of vampires, humans, and those in between is in full swing. The Hellsing organization is embattled as London is falling to Nazi vampire forces, turning the city's citizens into rivers of blood and a population of ghouls. It looks like it might be the end of Sir Integral Wingates Hellsing and her henchman, Walter. But what's this? The Vatican? But that means the Vatican is unprotected. If you haven't figured it out yet, Earth is in chaos of a World War like no other. New forces will rise up, surprises of undead power will surge forth, guns will blaze, and blades will sing. There's no telling how this will end, as Hellsing clamors forward with a seething wit and a frantic pace, and style that passes beyond gothic grace.

                5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2005-09-20

This book is amazing. Continuing the classic Hellsing series, the gothic horror in this book is awesome. We get to see the Vatican's Iscariot Agency go all out. My only regret is that the Major is only seen once in this entire volume. Other than that, it's awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Has its own merits.......2005-05-12

Granted, there was a lot of setup going on in this volume, but I also thought that it had quite a bit in it that made it good on its own. There were several parts that I thought were absolutely hilarous, as well as parts that were awesome and others that were downright disturbing. There was some great action going on. I was sad that Alucard wasn't really in it much, but at the same time I think this allowed some space to develop the other characters. Alucard kicks some serious butt, but some of the other characters can be cool in their own ways, and Volume 6 really shows that. You have to keep in mind that this is part of a SERIES and that Volume Seven will undoubtedly continue what was begun in Volumes 5 and 6.

4 out of 5 stars hopefully volume 7 will be better........2005-05-02

let me just get this out of the way, this volume was pretty much (at least, i sincerely hope), created just to set up volume 7. it doesn't really get interesting until the last couple chapters. the rest is just kind of meh. also, alucard is in this for about 5 pages. not even in a row, just spread out because he is still on the ship that he destroyed in volume 5. so overall, this book is merely ok. not the best, not the worst. i suggest this only to people who are fans of the series and want to know what happens to the hellsing crew. otherwise, this book won't interest you a whole lot. now, to count down the days until volume 7 arrives.

                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A dating guide for the mentally retarded.......2007-01-25

I bought this book because the reviews made me think it was clever and funny. It is neither. It is a collection of ultra-short stories about the author's dating experience. Most men "featured" are so ridiculous that I don't think anyone intelligent enough to buy a book online would ever consider dating them. The style is tedious and borders on irritating; every story is forced into a metaphor involving frogs and princes.

I am perplexed by the 5 star reviews. Clever sayings? Cute illustrations? All the tricks needed? Which planet are you gals from? Are there really women out there who need to be told that mobsters, the homeless, or violent men with multiple personalities are not dating material no matter how romantic and cute they are? I am not kidding, there is a "chapter" devoted to each of these categories. Or anyone above the age of 6 who thinks that words like "toadally true" and "Frogopoly" are funny?

Maybe the real purpose of the book is to make women feel better about the men they are dating. I mean if only half of these stories are true then Ms. Anderson must be the unluckiest woman on the dating scene today. She somewhat reminds me of that (fictional) character in one of Douglas Adams' books who never made a right choice in her life and thus became the most sought after advisor in the universe because people could just do the opposite of what she suggested and success was assured. Unfortunately Ms. Anderson doesn't explain how she picks her dates so you won't learn the secret of her failure.

My "favorite" part was where the author lists some euphemisms that married men use to avoid directly admitting that they are married. This list would surely help the esteemed reader to recognize such a "frog." And then she goes on to tell you that she kept dating a married man even after it became clear to her that he was married. Later on, she clarifies: "I'm a normal, healthy woman. I wouldn't want a man who didn't want to jump my bones. But usually I'm not ready without at least a dinner and a movie first." Usually! With high standards like these, it's a miracle that she isn't married to an actual prince and a stable of white horses!

At last, I'd like to share with you the 2-step program I developed for dating (which incidentally works pretty well in other areas of life as well):

                1) Be decent.
                2) Think.

It doesn't guarantee immediate success but it's surely more useful than anything you will read in this book. And about as funny.

5 out of 5 stars Toadally Ribbeting Reading! .......2006-01-22

This is an extremely clever and creative "take" on the singles scene. Informative, clever and funny. It's fast-paced and fun reading with stories and advice tips that both women and men will enjoy. The author deals with universal situations that every single person can completely relate to - but she does it with style and humor. Lots of laughs, and cute illustrations, too. Unique amidst the myriad of dating books, this one is special.

                5 out of 5 stars I loved this book! A Ribbeting read........2006-01-14

A fun look into finding the right man without being preachy. I loved the frog humor and the illustrations are great. I laughed and related to a lot of the dating experiences. I've already found my Prince but this book could have saved me from kissing a few unnecessary frogs in my search.

I have suggested this book to all my single friends.

5 out of 5 stars Toadally Fun, Funny... and True!.......2005-02-26

Some people don't have a sense of humor. If you're one of them, don't read this book... because it is ABSOLUTELY FUNNY and true at the same time. The author nails the traits of guys we've gone out with - and should get rid of fast, but too often don't. If you liked "He's Just Not that into You" - you'll love "Never Kiss a Frog." It's got the same theme, but is presented in a unique way... this time naming the different kinds of guys.... as frogs.

There are clever sayings and cute illustrations - and the names of the frogs are a hoot! Such as Sir Frogalot, Count Frogula and The Godfrogger. And one I've met all too often - The Really-Nice-Guy-But-Really-Bad-Kisser Frog! Every girl who's ever had a bad date can relate. The stories are fun to read and provide many laughs. Sure, it's not a lonnnng book, but hey, neither was "The Rules" - and that didn't provide any chuckles. If you're looking for "deep" and heavy psychological relationship babble - find something else. But for a fun, quick and laugh-filled romp - this is a "ribbiting" book to enjoy and share with your girlfriends!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Reality Check Book.......2005-02-21
