Book Description
This is, in short, a complete, unsettling, and frequently exhilarating vision of the world, starting with the voyage of Noah's ark and ending with a sneak preview of heaven!
Customer Reviews:
hmm... that's it?.......2007-04-24
Not as good as I expected it to be. I don't judge books by name or cover (like many do) but a title like this screamed to explored for fully. The first chapter about a woodworm and Noah's Ark was simply classic, however. I wish it would have been part of a book with similar short stories. I enjoyed the read, but the author could have done a lot more with his material. Lastly, the half chapter on love is beautiful - it's deep, soppy and infinitly heart-felt.
Interesting and unusual.......2007-02-05
This is an odd little book, composed of, I surmise, 11 distinct stories that have a very tenuous connection to each other. They are all well written and hold the interest of the reader. We go from the Deluge to the present day in various tales, and one inner dialogue. There's really no overarching plot, except most of the stories mention woodworms, which appears to be the link that binds most of this work together. It's an interesting book to read, and can stretch your mind a bit, which is actually a good thing.
The Best Novel I Have Ever Read.......2007-01-16
History repeats itself. The first time is tragedy, the second time farce. This is one of many brilliantly illustrated themes that run through the 10 1/2 chapters that quite closely sum up the whole history of the world. Find out what really happened on Noah's Ark. See if wood worms can be tried for heresy and excommunicated from the church. See the lengths that people will go to simply to survive another day. Take a trip to the moon, up a mountain, down a river, over the ocean, and finally one day to heaven. Oh, and one parenthetical detour that is, in my opinion, the best part of the whole book.
These stories depict humanity in all its...well...humanness. This is what it is to be human, all warts exposed, but also all that makes us somehow lovable despite it all. Barnes writes with a biting wit that remains somehow tender and open. The stories are entertaining, thought-provoking, stirring and all too true.
I read this book for the first time ten years ago, and to this day it is still the best book I ever read. Give it a read. You won't be disappointed.
Not for everyone.......2006-12-07
I enjoyed this book greatly. One of the stories was a bore (I won't say which one), but overall each was unique & contributed to the underlying theme, which other reviewers have already remarked upon quite well. There are poignant themes which a truly thoughtful person will recognize.
Those who are willing to stretch beyond a 'good read' will find it worthwhile. It is not, however, a heartwarming book, and those looking for something that touches the heart may want to look elsewhere.
Time to Call a Spade a Spade.......2006-09-10
I began this novel with great excitment and considerable expectations. The title, A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters, seemed so witty and full of potential that I was keenly interested in where the plot would take me. As anticipated, the first chapter was wonderful. While I had never considered Noah's Ark to be the starting point of the history of the world, I was prepared to accept the authors choice. The tone was undoubtedly clever, making the narrator extremely engaging, despite being a wood worm.
Unfortunately, the book seemed to reach it's pinnacle at that point. The nine and a half chapters thereafter were nothing more than an eclectic collection of random perspectives, sourced from modern history. It was a very egocentric account, in that its focus was on the history of the author's world, comprising, in main, of narratives from his time, and within his scope of experience. That is to say, it was not, as the title suggests, a history of the world, but rather a random collection of unassociated short stories. I felt myself waiting for these stories to be tied together, in anticipation of a overarching social or political statement, but I waited in vain.
Further to this, each of chapters adopted an entirely different writing style. While I can appreciate the talent of an author who is not restrained by merely one voice, I found the some chapters almost grating on the nerves. The first chapter had such an enjoyable style, but some of the subsequent chapters simply fell short of it's high standard.
It should be said, however, that this book has been revered by critics as a thought-provoking collection of essays, a series of profound statements about the state of affairs of the world. This may very well be the case, but why not call it as it is? Not a novel addressing the history of the world, but rather, a collection of random observations. 'A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters' is the very embodiment of the colloquialism, 'just putting it out there'.

Now You Die.......2006-02-26
When Zoe Foster stumbles across the dead body of Lola Malone, she immediately runs to call 911. She is stunned when the police arrive to find that the body has disappeared. When the police seem to believe that Zoe is mistaken about just what she saw, Zoe becomes determined to find out exactly what has happened to Lola.
Using her cartoon character, Kitty Floyd, Zoe tells the story as she hunts for clues and keeps her readers enthralled. Only, now there is a killer who is out to keep Zoe from discovering the truth. This brings her right back into her ex-husband's, Rick, life. Rick and Zoe's marriage only lasted two years, but they both have unresolved feelings and Rick is determined to protect Zoe from a killer who has targeted Zoe to keep her quiet.
Now You Die is a romantic suspense that, unlike Christiane Heggan's other books, is stronger on the suspense than the romance. However, this by no means detracts from the excellent 'who done it' mystery. Zoe's search to find out exactly what happened to Lola keeps the story moving, while her interactions with the intriguing secondary characters add dimension to an already well written mystery.
Although, I quickly wanted Rick and Zoe to find their way back to each other, I still yearned for a stronger romantic plot. But, the suspense lover in me found that I was held enthralled trying to figure out exactly who the villain was. Romantic suspense readers who are looking for a story that will keep you guessing should definitely add Now You Die to their "to be read" lists!

False advertising!.......2006-01-29
Despite the false advertising, there are some things I liked about NOW YOU DIE.
Cartoonist Zoe Foster is a likable character. Like the heroine of her cartoon strip, Zoe is a feisty woman who doesn't take any crap, especially from a potential boyfriend who gets fresh; she knees him in the `nads.
The cartoonist angle is not just a gimmick. Author Christiane Heggan is able to follow through by having Kitty Floyd, Zoe's P.I. heroine, investigate a case similar to the one she's pursuing.
The "real" case involves a body Zoe stumbles across. She calls 911, but when she returns to the scene, the body is gone. The police are skeptical, but since the dead woman is a lounge singer working for her ex-husband, he's willing to help her, as are the police eventually.
There is also a romantic triangle involving her ex-husband Rick Vaughn (Night club owner named Rick? Wonder where she got that from.)and police detective Joe Santos, who just won't settle for being just friends.
Heggan adds a father (with mafia connections) Zoe never knew she had who arrives on the scene when somebody takes a shot at Zoe. A fan is also sending Zoe scary e-mails.
My problem with the book is that it was advertised as a mystery. I got it from a mystery book club. NOW YOU DIE is a mystery of sorts, but the emphasis is on romance. Zoe has been wearing her hair in a braid ever since her divorce six years before, but when Rick says he likes her hair down, she ditches the braid. She also "melts" in his arms one too many times.
I will be dropping my membership in that book club. I'm always on the lookout for a good mystery writer, and I'm not likely to find one if I keep tripping over the romance/mystery genre. Lawrence Block, Ed McBain, Stuart Kaminsky and Robert Clark can compete with what passes for serious literature these days. Some editors may think a romantic plot thread is necessary, but one of the greatest amateur sleuths in literature (Miss Marple) managed to do without one.
A romance novel with a major twist - It is a good story too!! :).......2005-12-11
I picked this book up on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised. The first chapter drew me in and the characters were deep enough to keep it interesting. The main folks almost had a Dean Koontz feel to them (that would be a good thing).
A few sidebar stories and strong friendship/romance themes never quite let me forget that it was first and foremost a romance, but I think I could make a habit of reading Ms. Heggan if her plotlines are all as good as this one.
One very nice point about this book is that anyone can read it. By that I mean that I do not recall any sections I would not want my fourteen year old reading (Yah - I know... I am a prude :)).
If you like interesting stories about intelligent, headstrong, pretty girls, you should like this book. I definitely recommend!
All the best,
Jay
A Worthwhile Read-What Did Happen to Lola Malone?.......2005-11-25
The book opens right away with Lola Malone, who is strangled right away and left by the dumpster dead. Then when Zoe Foster, cartoonist, happens to see the body and run for help, it's too late. When The authorities arrive at the scene, the body is mysteriously gone.
The police look at Zoe with raised eyebrows, and dismiss the case finding nothing there. But Zoe determined to solve this strange mystery, digs until she finds out what really happened to Lola. One of the ways she goes about it, is to make her cartoon character Kitty Floyd, tell the story and find clues for the missing Lola.
Of course this doesn't happen without repercussions-there is a killer out there indeed, and much closer than Zoe would have ever thought. She and her ex-husband Rick come back together to solve the case-without Zoe getting killed in the end. Is the killer "Lonesome Me," who has been writing scary comments about Zoe's cartoons in the daily paper? Or is it someone else whom she never would have thought possible? You must read and find out!
Good Read .......2005-11-23
Zoe Foster is a cartoonist for a publisher in New York. She lives in a loft that she and her best friend renovated. She has been divorced for six yrs from Rick. Her cartoon P.I.,Kitty Floyd has begun to take off. Zoe is a fiesty, mouthy, redhead just like her character in the strip.
Rick, her ex-husband, is a former marine who owns and runs a local nightclub. He seems to be protective, dedicated, and somewhat still in love with his former wife.
On the way home from the Christmas Party, Zoe finds a dead woman in the alley. But by the time she summons help and returns with the police, the body is gone. Undaunted by the refusal of the police to believe her, she sets out like her intrepid creation and starts to investigate on her own.
Surprisingly the trail leads to her ex. The identity of the unknown body is a singer from Rick's club. Even with the help of Joe Santos, a policeman, who is in love with Zoe, she finds the going tough. But as A leads to B she gets more involved, and when a sniper takes a shot at her, Rick and Joe are determined to protect her, even from herself.
Full of twists and surprises, the novel holds our attention very well. I enjoyed the read.

Live or Die.......2006-03-09
This important book is both a timely and revealing account of the way medicine is practiced in the United States and a consumer guide to gaining control over your health and well-being.
The American Medical Establishment is now the nation's second largest industry, generating almost 10% of the gross national product. In 1981 Americans spent a staggering $287 billion on health care, yet only 4 percent of that amount was paid for medical prevention - at a time when medical science has the capability to prevent half of all known illnesses, including heart disease, lubng cancer and stroke.
In his eye-opening study, American physician Thomas H. Ainsworth brings these troubling statistics to life. Seldom has the Medical Establishment, which Dr. Ainsworth describes as a space-age dinosaur, been examined so frankly.
The first part of Live or Die offers an insiders view of the history, politics, and socioeconomics of the Medical Establishment. Dr. Ainsworth shows where its most serious problems lie and makes it clear, using many specific examples, why rapidly escalating costs, resricted access to adequate family care, overspecialization, and technological overkill could bring the world's best health care system to its knees. Stripping the profession of its awe-inspiring mystique, he exposes every aspect of organized medicine, from the AMA lobby to the surgical suite, from hospitals and health insurance to research institutes. Dr. Ainsworth is openly critical of such prevalent abuses as unnnecessary bypass surgery and Caesarean sections, and the for profit, proprietary business of kidney dialysis.
The second part of this book explains how you, the medical consumer, can make the present system more responsive to your needs and help transform the system for the future. It provides a wealth of encouraging information on how you and your physician can identify you own health hazards and prevent disease by risk-factor intervention. These tools are inexpensive and easy to use. Were they employed by the medical profession at large, America's annual health-care bill could be slashed by $100 billion! Finally' Live or Die is an invaluable resource. It may also become - quite literally - a book you cannot afford to live without.

Eric Flint and David Drake's alt-history epic devoted to real-life Byzantine butt-kicker Belisarius has reached part three--Destiny's Shield--and this installment finally busts loose with some serious head-to-head. Everybody's favorite general is leading an outnumbered Roman-Persian force to check Malwa aggression in the east, forced to action by the fiends' sea-borne invasion of the Tigris-Euphrates delta and their subsequent siege of Babylon. For those unfamiliar with the series, this what-if puts the Malwa Empire in control of the Indian subcontinent thanks to diabolical assistance from across time, granting their forces superior strategy and advanced weaponry. But the ever-canny Belisarius is equal to the challenge, with no small help from a telepathic crystal named Aid that acts as both adviser and seer.
The writing tandem of Flint and Drake still proves strong--relative newcomer Flint (Mother of Demons) seems well-paired with military-SF powerhouse Drake, creator of "the meanest bunch of mercs who ever nuked a world for pay" (that'd be Hammer's Slammers, natch). The two offer up their usual dose of meticulous historical detail and realistic, mud-and-blood combat and tactics. Throw in some time-bending fun like Belisarius's "invention" of the Knights Hospitaler and phrases like "fire in the hole," and you know you're in for a good time. (Of course, if you're new to the series, check out the first book, An Oblique Approach.) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
EVIL FROM BEYOND TIME
The Malwa Empire squats like a toad across 6th century India, commanded by ruthless men with depraved appetites. The thing from the distant future that commands them is far worse.
AN ADVISOR WITHOUT A BODY
Those who oppose the purulent Hell the Malwa will make of Earth have sent a crystal, Aide, to halt their advance. Aide holds all human knowledge -- but he cannot act by himself.
A CHAMPION FOR ALL TIMES
Count Belisarius, the greatest general of the age and perhaps of all ages, must outwit the evil empire -- and then, when there is no longer room to maneuver, to meet it sword-edge to sword-edge, because,
no matter what it costs
EVIL CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO RULE MEN!

3rd in a great series !.......2004-06-17
Great, great, great book. I especially enjoy a great series since I sometimes read 2 to 3 books a week. Very engaging, the characters are real and well developed, the plot is very interesting. I generally do not go in for alternate history but this one draws me in for some reason.
The paperback was dadgum hard to get a hold of. I finally bought one for $20 from one of the amazon resellers. Was in good shape !
I wish this pair would write school history texts..........2004-06-04
They do a good job of making history much more personable and interesting. Granted, they are writing fiction, but relying on history for a general basis. A lot more folks might like history class more if we could put them to work.
3rd book in the Belisariad.......2002-08-06
This is really a novel of alternate history, with a few alien SF or before-their-time inventions added to create plot situations for eastern Romans in A.D 531. It's a light page-turner, with something exciting, clever, or anachronistic in every chapter to make it fun. It is written in three parallel streams-General Belisarius allied with Persians to defend Babylon against an overwhelming alien-led Malwa invasion, his wife Antonina attempting to recover Egypt as the foundry of empire, and a rebel empress subverting the Malwa powerbase in the Ghats of India. There's a good balance between plot, lead characters, and military affairs here.
A number of basic cusswords are tipped in for flavor, but battle is fairly bloodless as military fiction goes, with a wry sense of (military) humor throughout. I'm afraid the authors give no organized backstory (what has happened in the previous two books) so this is not the place to discover how history was diverted from its "true" course into this alternate world. And of course there's no closure to the story. The characters have not learned something new but are simply farther along their courses to their destinys in later volumes. Most everyone seems to be a competent, tough, moral, and resourceful soldier to admire. Killers they may be, but you feel they are OUR killers. For Belisarius in particular everything always falls out right. Indeed, it had better if the overwhelming numbers and gunpowder weapons of the Malwa are to be overcome.
Another fine book in a great series.......2002-06-08
The long expected Malwa invasion of Persia has finally struck and the Persians turn to their ancient enemies, the Byzantine Romans, for help. The ex-Emperor Justinian convinces Theodora to send Constantinople's greatest general--perhaps the greatest general in the history of the world--Belesarius to help. With only ten thousand soldiers, Belisarius will have to work a miracle to survive, let alone defeat the hordes of Malwa arriving from India. Fortunately, Belisarius has been planning a miracle for some time now. The stakes are high. The Malwa are led by Link--an intelligent artifact sent from the future with the goal of eliminating any notion of talent or freedom from the planet.
Belisarius defeats a raiding Malwa cavalry force as he approaches ancient Babylon where the Persian Emperor is beseiged. In the meantime, his Indian ally, Shakuntala, has begun her own campaign against the Malwa occupation of most of India. Belisarius's wife, Antonia is sent to Alexandria to reassert Roman Imperial authority (as was often the case in historical Byzantine Egypt, religious disputes threaten Roman rule) and to create an arsenal for her husband and Shakuntala--and the nucleus for a new front against the huge Malwa armies.
Authors Eric Flint and David Drake again combine in this third novel in the Belisarius series. Flint and Drake deliver a powerful mix of military fantasy (what would Belisarius have done if he had access to effective gunpowder-based weapons), pure tactics, and touches of real historical research.
Even with the greatest general of history, the defeat of a super-intelligent artifact seems a little too easy and occasional modern themes creep in (would holy men like Michael really have been quite so broad-minded about the various Christian faiths at war with one another, and would Anthonia really have so actively worked to protect the Jews of Alexandria?) but that is largely quibbling. DESTINY'S SHIELD makes for a compelling and page-turning (or scroll-bar clicking) read.
I Love Belisarius.......2001-08-24
A continuation of the Belisarius saga doesn't leave much to be desired. The interplay of the characters is fascinating and wonderful.

Ask to see your counterpart!!!.......2005-10-18
I will tell you a story. After reading this book, I wondered if I had a counterpart anywhere near my home!! I asked in my mind to be shown this person, if there was one, and to be shown in such clarity that I would recognize him or her!! As I sat in a cafe, about a week later, a man came into the cafe with a small child. He was wearing the exact clothes I was wearing, down to the running shoes. We had the same shirt on and khaki pants! We had the same body shape, he being a bit taller. He had gotten out of a silver Mercedes( I used to dream about owning one!) Every hair on my body stood up. The child with him had a t-shirt on which read "Sister". My own sister in this life lived one day, "died" in 1942. I had this most wonderful feeling of peace. Just coincidence? No, I don't think so. Cheers!
Brain food for the advanced Seth reader.......1998-05-27
In this book (two volumes) Seth adds depth to some of the concepts introduced in Seth Speaks (Reincarnation, Probabilities) and adds new flavours (Counterparts, Families of Consciousness). Excellent and intriguing as usual but you should have read and enjoyed "Seth Speaks" or "Nature of personal reality" before you dig into this one. However, I just finished reading it for the third time and (again) it's been like a new book to me.
