"What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" is not only the most well-known short story title of the latter part of the 20th century; it has come to stand for an entire aesthetic, the bare-bones prose style for which Raymond Carver became famous. Perhaps, it could be argued, too famous, at least for his fiction's own good. Like those of Hemingway or any other writer similarly loved, imitated, parodied, and reviled, these stories can sometimes produce the sense of reading pastiche. "A man without hands came to the door to sell me a photograph of my house." "That morning she pours Teacher's over my belly and licks it off. That afternoon she tries to jump out the window." "My friend Mel McGinnis was talking. Mel is a cardiologist, and sometimes that gives him the right." What other writer ever produced first sentences like these? They are like doors into Carverworld, where everyone speaks in simple declarative phrases, no one ever stops at one beer, and failure or violence are the true outcomes of the American dream.

Yet these stories bear careful re-reading, like any truly important and enduring work. For one thing, Carver is one of the few writers who can make desperation--cutting your ex-wife's telephone cord in the middle of a conversation, standing on your own roof chunking rocks while a man with no hands takes your picture--deeply funny. Then there is the sheer craft that went into their creation. Despite their seeming simplicity, his tales are as artfully constructed as poems--and like poems, the best of them can make your breath catch in your throat. In the title piece, for instance, after the gin has been drunk, after the stories have been told, after the tensions in the room have come to the surface and subsided again, there comes a moment of strange lightness and peace: "I could hear my heart beating. I could hear everyone's heart. I could hear the human noise we sat there making, not one of us moving, not even when the room went dark."

Much of what happens in What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (1981) happens offstage, and we're left with tragedy's props: booze, instant coffee, furniture from a failed marriage, cigarettes smoked in the middle of the night. This is not merely a matter of technique. Carver leaves out a great deal, but that's only a measure of his characters' vulnerability, the nerve endings his stories lay bare. To say anything more, one feels, would simply hurt too much. --Mary Park

Book Description

In his second collection of stories, as in his first, Carver's characters are peripheral people--people without education, insight or prospects, people too unimaginative to even give up. Carver celebrates these men and women.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A thematic experiment that scaffolds Cathedral.......2007-07-20

The title story of this collection is Carver at his best: Human husks take the place of characters, and they are filled with copious amounts of alcohol. They inhabit a sparse and deliberate setting. And no great Carver story would be complete without inebriated reflections on the human condition. Other bright flashes in this collection include the pseudo-horror story "Tell the Women We're Going" and the oft-anthologized "Gazebo."

But too many of the stories in this collection feel incomplete. They are missing that narrative "click," that satisfying sound you hear at the end of a good story when a psychological latch locks something special in your head. Stories like "Mr. Coffee and Mr. Fixit," "A Serious Talk," "The Bath," and "One More Thing" seem to stop rather than end. Carver must have recognized this himself, because he re-writes "The Bath" as "A Small, Good Thing" for his follow-up collection, Cathedral, which is far superior to What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.

This collection seems to have been assembled around the title story. The thematic commitment necessarily binds the stories, but also perhaps weakens the overall craft. The stories either tip-toe around or splash through the theme, darkening it or twisting it here and there, and then when the theme is used up, too many of the stories stop telling themselves. In the title story, this works well, by the majority of this collection falls flat.

Carver is still experimenting in What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, and I give him credit for bravely submitting his attempts to tell stories in a new way. He hits his stride with the title story and perhaps with "Gazebo," but it isn't until his collection Cathedral that Carver gets control of his craft.

4 out of 5 stars A Walk on the Dark Side We Should All Take.......2007-07-03

Reading this collection of short stories was like taking a walk on the dark side of human nature, made all the more scary and powerful by Carver's masterful, minimalist style. He hones right in on the essence of the character's lives and spares the reader any gratuitous drama. The result is a feeling of undeniable bleakness. Yet, similar to Hemmingway's style, the strong characters find their strength in a certain type of resignation.

What I liked most about this book is how I found myself clearly wanting to distance myself from the bleakness of these character's lives, yet, I was maddeningly unable to. That's the beauty of Carver's minimalist style; he hones the truth down to its barest form, so that a reader can't avoid finding a sliver of it within. And that's the true scare-factor of this book; Carver demonstrates beautifully the fine line all of our lives traverse, and how we must be vigilant, aware, and beware in every moment.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-03-31

Got the book as promised in a timely manner. The book is good needed it for a class that I was behind in and was able to catch up the same day it came in.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Carver.......2007-03-25

Carver's texts are pure American, and in their purity his characters and stories become a universal experience. His language, strong, concise and to the point is charged with emotion. He uses only the necessary words to describe and each word is there for a purpose.
This is my second book by Carver. I started with Fires and I'm anxiouslly awaiting the arrival of recently purchased Cathedrals.

5 out of 5 stars reinvented the short story.......2006-12-20

this has been said many times before, but Carver reinvented the short story as a credible litterary genre. I recommend reading this first then diving into Cathedral. It's a delicious showcase of the author as editor and revisionist. As he ages and perspectives change, Carver adds a richness to many of the stories.

1 out of 5 stars A primer on "how to write a horrible plot"!.......2007-09-29

What in the world was Teresa Medeiros thinking when she wrote this book? I have read many other books by this author and have been delighted by them. This one made me so upset and angry that I've waited two days to write this review. Every time I think of the way this plot twisted (and then twisted again) I get mad, and I feel cheated. The only way this author could have been more successful in writing about things I REALLY don't want in the plot of a Regency novel would have been for her to get my complete list. She did manage to leave out a few of my all time no-no's but not enough so that you would notice.

I began to read the book (without any idea of what it was about) and was thinking that it was going very well. Then I began to wonder why no background information was given for Miss Samantha Wickersham. The book continued, Samantha (the nurse) was making inroads into the torment and self-pity suffered by Gabriel Fairchild (the blind patient) and gradually bringing him back into the realm of the human being. Still no background information except for things such as Samantha saying "my sister" or "my parents". Samantha won over the hearts of all the servants with her concern for her patient, who had been blinded while trying to save the life of Admiral Lord Nelson aboard ship during a naval battle. I did not rebel at all when the two lead characters began to be attracted to each other, after all, that's why I read romantic fiction. Then, the whole thing went to pieces.

I will give Ms Medeiros credit, I NEVER saw that plot twist coming. I just wish she could have resisted temptation and not done it in the first place. If you want to read a story about a shallow, self-centered, cowardly heroine, this is the book for you. And Samantha doesn't learn from her mistakes (in my opinion) because she compounds the mistake by making the whole list of them all over again! And, I absolutely cannot stand it when an author has a man vow that he is so much in love with one woman that there can never be another in his life (after all, he is supposedly deligently trying to locate her!!) and then proceedes to prove to us that, oops, sorry, didn't mean that. And in this case, in such a short space of time (several months) and in such a horrible situation. What in the world was Ms Medeiros thinking with the episode which occured the night before Gabriel was to sail off to war again? Awful! Simply awful!

As you can tell from reading these reviews, this book has at least one plot twist. I cannot be as specific as I would like because it isn't fair to spoil the plot for other readers. If I could be specific, I would have REALLY blasted this book. A favorite author of mine, but definitely a book of hers which I will throw in my to-go box from a distance of 10 feet, or more. I'm mad!

              5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-08-20

I just loved this book! Set in the regency historical period, its basically a Florence Nightingale type tale of a blinded soldier who falls in love with his nurse. The hero is determined not to accept any help as much as the heroine is determined to pull him out of the darkness (so to speak). Really writing anything more would be a spoiler. Its very touching at times, not highly emotional mind you, but just a sweet romance. If you like authors like Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Sabrina Jeffries, or anyone similar who writes in this genre, then you'll enjoy this book too. I got it as an ebook from the NYC library and now I'm scrambling to get it in paperback to go on my keeper shelf.

2 out of 5 stars What the heck happened?.......2007-07-18

Gabriel was blinded in battle while fighting for his country and becomes a bitter man living as a hermit with his servants. Samantha becomes his nurse to try to help him cope with his blindness. They fight and bicker, but most of the time it's enduring. Both characters have moments of amusing childishness and annoying selfishness but the story is solid and there are some really sweet moments. Watching Gabriel struggle with his blindness and seeing the unbelievable patience Samantha had with him was heartwarming.

Yours Until Dawn had such wonderful promises. For over three-fourths of the book I was hanging onto every sentence, every word, just waiting to see what would happen. Then, complete and utter disappointment.

Up until around page 259 this book had a 4.5 star rating written all over it. Then it seem to just abruptly end and become a completely different story with a different plot and different characters with the same name. Samantha's surprise didn't make any sense whatsoever. It was all pointless.

Gabriel's "recovery", while good news, was disappointing. I felt as if the author had to 'fix' him before a real relationship could form with him and Samantha. I felt as if that implied there was something wrong with him to start with. His parents had treated him like an invalid and they never did completely accept his blindness, but they were the most doting parents when everything worked out! It just felt hollow.

Samantha. Good grief. The most horrible woman I have ever read. Selfish and cruel and way too bossy. She had "too little, too late" written all over her and I felt that Gabriel was a complete idiot for staying with her. She loved him, left him, then loved him, and left him. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the beta heroes. The all-around nice guys who aren't domineering and cruel but in the end Gabriel seem whipped. He didn't even get angry when he found out her little secret. But his letter to her at the end was very well written and so very sweet. I just wished it had been written for someone else.

I understand rabid fans will not like critical reviews and will most likely give this a low rating, but trust me. If you MUST read this book, then please stop at the weak 'plot-twist' and just make up your own ending.

5 out of 5 stars Yours until dawn.......2007-06-23

I disagree with the publishers weekly review. I loved the book from beginning to end. I kept the book and have read it more than once. I liked the surprising twist. And I liked Gabriel, Samantha and Cecily!?
              It is worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book!.......2007-04-29

I liked this story. There was humor in it and characters that were enjoyable. Medeiros is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Getting to follow big, bad Byzantine Belisarius around the alt-history battlefield--courtesy of Eric Flint and David Drake--comes in a close second to having your own personal unit of cataphracts. (Although, of course, those cataphracts would be nice to have in traffic.) Following on the heels of Destiny's Shield, the fourth installment in this popular series follows the superhuman general as he harries Malwa troops in the mountains leading into Mesopotamia. He's still got the across-time assistance of the crystal Aide to help him deal with the threat, augmenting his senses and keeping him briefed on the tactics of everyone from Wellington to Turenne. But Link, the Supreme Commander of the Universe, still calls the shots for the evil empire, and Belisarius has to double-time to keep up (especially facing such shrewd field commanders as Damodara).

Fortune's Stroke downshifts the series a notch in terms of sheer Belisarius-meted carnage, because Damodara's Ye-tai barbarians and Rajput cavalry aren't the only show in town. Flint and Drake spend a good deal of time with other characters in the series in other locales, like Kungas and Irene in south India and Antonina in Axum (for a start). But this investment will surely pay off as the series continues, as Belisarius and his cohort close in on the Malwa for good. (And if you're new to the battle, start with An Oblique Approach, the first title in the series.) --Paul Hughes

                        Book Description

EVIL FROM BEYOND TIME RULES THE GREATEST EMPIRE ON EARTH!

Link, the supercomputer from a future that should not exist, has used terror and gunpowder weapons to forge the Malwa Empire, harnessing the vast manpower of the Indian subcontinent and using the barbarian races of the periphery to bind the whole together. No power on Earth in the 6th century could stand against Link's evil.

Aide, a human soul embodied in a jewel, has come back to halt evil's progress. Aide has no power but that of truth, but truth is the only power that could move the greatest general of the age, Belisarius.

With his sword, his paladins, and his genius, Belisarius has turned the armies of Byzantium into a weapon capable of blunting the first assault of the Malwa hordes. Now, supported by allies from all the world yet free, Belisarius, with his wife and co-commander Antonina, faces overwhelming Malwa numbers in a ring that tightens about them.

There is no room for maneuver and no safety in defeat. The armies of Good and Evil gathered on the fertile plains of Mesopotamia will decide the fate of the world --

And the fate of all the future!

5 out of 5 stars Fourth in a Great Series !.......2004-06-17

Great, great, great book. I especially enjoy a great series since I sometimes read 2 to 3 books a week. Very engaging, the characters are real and well developed, the plot is very interesting. I generally do not go in for alternate history but this one draws me in for some reason.

3 out of 5 stars Belisarius and the musketeers--Byzantine alt. history.......2002-10-23

Belisarius has pushed back the Malwa (Indian) invasion of Persia, but the threat remains. While the main Malwa army regroups in southern Persia, their main cavalry force is crossing the Zacros Mountains and threatening northern Mesopotamia. Even the smaller army is large enough to do great damage--and to force the defending Persians and Romans to divide their forces, allowing the main army to attack once more. Somehow, Belisarius must slow the best army the Malwa can bring--yet can even slowing that army do more than delay the inevitable conquest of the entire world by Malwa armies guided by a future intelligence--and equipped with future technology?

FORTUNE'S STROKE continues the BELISARIUS Series. Historically, Belisarius was the greatest general of the late ancient world--the man Byzantine Emperor Justinian relied upon in his reconquest of the Roman Mediterranian. In this alternative history, Belisarius is warned by a crystal intelligence of the destruction sought by the future entity Link, and Link's human servants. Using Roman technology and modern knowledge, Belisarius is able to build a small force of musketeers and develop combined arm tactics that combine the best of Robert E. Lee, and Wellington.

Although the series continues to be interesting, with engaging characters and vivid battle scenes, FORTUNE'S STROKE is not the strongest novel in the series. Although Belisarius and his allies repeatedly note that the first law of battle is that things get messed up (in stronger language), in fact, Belisarius's plans never actually get messed up (except a minor problem at the very beginning). He seems to have just the right future technology at just the right time to do maximum damage to his enemies. Worse, the most dangerous enemies he faces are clearly being set up to become future allies. I also felt disappointed by the 'clever' Belisarius plan at the end. The entire book led up to this--it seems to me that Flint and Drake could have come up with something a little more, uh, oblique.

Authors Eric Flint and David Drake deliver vivid characters along with detailed battle scenes. Although the interaction between Belisarius and Antonia is sometimes a little too precious, most characters become real--even the Malwa and their allies.

Fans of this series will definitely want to read FORTUNE'S STROKE as it details a critical period in the war between Rome and the Malwa, continues character development, and even--brutally but realistically--ends the lives of some characters. This book should not be read first--but fortunately, Flint and Drake offer the first three novels in the series for free from the Baen.com Library so this isn't a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Another Installment in a Great Series!.......2001-10-24

This book carries on the tradition of a fine series. It has strong character development and good continuity with the previous books in the series. Belisarius continues to vex the Malwa with the assistance of his loyal supporters and Aide(his crystalline guide from the future). It also expands the role of those supporters considerably, making Belisarius seem more human.

4 out of 5 stars The tension is building..........2001-05-01

FORTUNE'S STROKE is the (action-packed) fourth installment of this series. This time around, Belisarius doesn't have such an easy time defeating the Malwa. The advance of Damodora places him up against Rana Sanga, a warrior he likes and respects. After their encounter in the mountains of Persia, he will respect him even more. Elsewhere, tragedy in Ethiopia spurs on the Axum-Roman alliance, and Antonina furthers her education in the ways of war.

Despite the sheer carnage that forms the center of the book, much of the focus is on human relationships. True Love blossoms for Eon, Shakuntala, Holkar, and Irene, while the devotion of Belisarius and Antonina is unshaken. Just as gratifying is the continued development of Aide into a character with a mind and voice of his own.

It can be taken for granted that the Malwa forces in Mesopotamia and India suffer tremendous losses in this installment. While it's not exactly a cliff-hanger, there is incentive to read the next book. The authors dangle a carrot at the end of the book in the form of the (imperial) ambitions of Narses, now firmly entrenched in the Malwa camp. (For that matter, when will we hear more about Photius and the Roman empire!?) I for one will be haunting the bookstores until THE TIDE OF VICTORY arrives to--well, tide me over.

5 out of 5 stars This is Great Stuff!.......2000-09-06

Let me begin by saying that I read a lot of books in many genres. I don't review most of them but I have to share my absolute pleasure in this series. Except for the Honor Harrington series, I don't read much military sf. I don't recall why I decided to try this series - my experience with Drake has been mixed - but I did. I can truly say that this series is fabulous! I can't remember the last time I finished a chapter in a book and said aloud "this is great stuff." There is hardly a flaw - even the history is accurate. The last time I knew I had something this enthralling was reading David Eddings. I am sure I'll be re-reading this series and sharing it with my friends.

In terms of this particular volume, I believe the authors handled their task well. The growing number of characters and their far-flung locations does slow the action a bit but makes up for it by introducing some interesting developments in terms of lives and romances. At my last count, we had 4 separate major action locations and plot lines. Frankly, that's enough or the books must be longer. This is a danger. As I said in reviewing another book, separate plot lines are fine, as long as they are plot lines and not sound bites. Otherwise, to the authors: keep up the good work and words! Wonderful Stuff! Read it. Now!

Great book! It's the first of a 12 book series-LONE STAR COUNTRY CLUB and Ms Rimmer sets the stage for the characters and their stories as only she can. We are introduced to 4 bachelors who find a baby girl on the 9th hole of the exclusive golf course. She has a note attached to her blanket-it says "this is your daughter, Lena" but doesn't tell whom she belongs to. Well, all 4 know it is possible that she belongs to him. Flint Carson takes charge thinking he and Josie Lavender are the parents. He hires Josie to be the nanny but Josie has her own agenda she wants Flynt Carson forever. Flynt and Josie have a rocky romance-Flynt thinks himself not worthy of a wife and children but Josie gets him to come around and realize she is the love of his life. I'm ready to read the other 11 now.

"Long before we do anything explicitly religious at all, we have to do something about the fire that burns within us," writes Ronald Rolheiser. "What we do with that fire, how we channel it, is our spirituality." From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." Building upon these pillars, Rolheiser delves into the more challenging marital tensions with chapters such as "Christ as the Basis for Christian Spirituality" and a "Spirituality of Sexuality." This is an excellent book for any Christian who has longs to create a more holy and lasting spiritual union. --Gail Hudson

                                        Book Description

Ronald Rolheiser makes sense of what is frequently a misunderstood word: spirituality. In posing the question "What is spirituality?" Father Rolheiser gets quickly to the heart of common difficulties with the subject, and shows through compelling anecdotes and personal examples how to channel that restlessness, that deep desire, into a healthy spirituality.

This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives.  Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables--the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life--and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience.  At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

                                        3 out of 5 stars Classical Catholicism........2007-07-16

This review offers an anecdotal story. I read this book when it was first published in 1999. After reading the first three chapters, I was excited that this new voice was following in a few sets of footprints of progressive Catholic Leaders like Richard Rohr, Matt Fox, and Diarmuid O'Murchi, to name a few.

Then I got to chapter four only to discover that this was just another book on spirituality in the genre of Catholic orthodoxy. Having left the Catholic Church many years before this book was published, I wrote the author via email to comment on his book. I was surprised when he got back to me. While I don't remember the entirety of the author's remarks, I do remember that he was positive and kind. One point that he made, however, is that he thought that I would not find a home in another tradition. Having been out of the Catholic Church now for over twenty years, I can state categorically that the Church holds absolutely no influence over my spiritual life or my relationship with the ineffable which we all serve.

It is interesting to note that the Catholic Church has morphed even further rightward with the election of Ratzinger as Pope. From a historical perspective, I suppose this event is just a passing cloud on the backdrop of history. All extreme ideologies lose the force of their impact with time, as truth will overcome in the end.

While I agree with the author's fundamental thesis concerning our relationship to God, one does not need the Catholic Church as an intermediary to accomplish that goal. Contrary to the Pope's recent public comments, the Catholic Church represents one religion among many. To assert that the Catholic Church is the "one true" Church is an insult to the vast majority of people on the planet engaging meaningful work on behalf of justice outside of this organization. These types of proclamations only divide people rather than bring them together in mutual respect and dignity. A lesson Mr. Ratzinger might learn to abide by, before his next irrelevant outburst.

Has me hooked on Rolheiser's take on what truly is inside each of us; an "energy and fire" that needs to be quenched. Fr. Rolheiser offers many options on how to contain, release and express this "fire within", and at the same time knowing that it is the Spirit of God working within you. Read the book, I read it twice so far. You will be amazed at how you think after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A book that breaks down the boundaries.......2007-04-05

For those who have often shook their heads in dismay at the constant schitzophrenic warmongering between secular ideals and Christian beliefs, this book is a breath of fresh spiritual air. It is written in a straightforward comprehensive language and yet does not attempt to dismantle the basic tenets of Christian belief. Those who want a deeper understanding of the essential ideas which religion couches in antiquated and dogmatic terms will find in this book a blessing. Rolheiser, like any good writer, puts into simple and precise terms the anxiety and anguish that those who stand in the razor thin neutral zone between the religious and secular worlds feel. He is also refreshingly non-judgemental, reflexive and intelligent in his approach. This book is a wonder.

Rolheiser writes with incredible clarity about a topic which can be confusing and difficult to understand. I would recommend this book highly to any individual struggling to understand either Christian spirituality or the demands of living a Christian life. Outstanding!!!

"Everyone has to have a spirituality - either a life-giving one or a destructive one."

So begins Author Ronald Rolheiser's examination of Christian Spirituality in what has become his classic work, "The Holy Longing." Rolheiser writes with uncommon clarity in providing a foundation for Christian Spirituality and in stimulating us to rethink spirituality and our own spiritual journey. Rolheiser shows us that it is not enough to be "spiritual but not religious." The book will either be a reawakening or a disappointment to those who describe themselves this way.

Spirituality, Rolheiser points out, is about what we do with our souls and is subject of concern for all of us. "Spirituality is about being integrated or falling apart, about being within community or being lonely, about being in harmony with Mother Earth or being alienated from her. Spirituality shapes our actions, and in turn, our desire. Desire makes us act and when we act what we do will either lead to greater integration or disintegration within our personalities, minds, bodies...and to a strengthening or deterioration of our relationship to God, others, or the cosmic world."

Our age constitutes a virtual conspiracy against the interior life - narcissism, pragmatism, and unbridled restlessness. And today's secular society looks on Christian Spirituality with suspicion so in its place we now have cults of physical health, new gods (celebrities, star athletes) and new shrines (stadiums, pageants, reality TV). So, how are we to satisfy our fundamental dis-ease, that holy longing - that unquenchable fire that renders us incapable, in this life, of ever coming to full peace?

Rolheiser points the way. After defining the situation and the current struggle for our soul, Rolheiser provides an outline for a Christian Sprituality, the basis for Christian Spirituality (the Incarnation), and key spiritualities within a spirituality including ecclesiology, the Paschal Mystery, justice and peacemaking, and sexuality.

Rolheiser in "The Holy Longing" shows how true Christian Spirituality can come close to quenching the unquenchable and how spirituality is essential to having a healthy soul which holds us together and keeps us energized.
