Book Description
Ha Jin’s masterful new novel casts a searchlight into a forgotten corner of modern history, the experience of Chinese soldiers held in U.S. POW camps during the Korean War. In 1951 Yu Yuan, a scholarly and self-effacing clerical officer in Mao’s “volunteer” army, is taken prisoner south of the 38th Parallel. Because he speaks English, he soon becomes an intermediary between his compatriots and their American captors.
With Yuan as guide, we are ushered into the secret world behind the barbed wire, a world where kindness alternates with blinding cruelty and one has infinitely more to fear from one’s fellow prisoners than from the guards. Vivid in its historical detail, profound in its imaginative empathy,
War Trash is Ha Jin’s most ambitious book to date.

a very tough 3, almost 4.......2007-05-03
Ha Jin deserves more than 3 stars. His "Waiting" is absolutely beautiful. But three stars is what I decide to give "War Trash", and that is because of the documentary type approach Jin adopts. Its not that the novel is not moving, it definitely is. But I feel novels like Sebastian Barry`s "A Long Long Way" are more emotionally powerful, and I think thats gots lots to do with the poetry of Barry`s story. Ha Jin`s novel reads like impeccably written history - which is wonderful for its own sake. But only at the very end do we get the type of "this can't be happening" feeling that hurts us in the gut (lots), and make fiction in war settings so powerful. I look forward very much to the next time Ha Jin gives us a treat of pure heart-felt fiction and less fictionalized history
Fiction That Reads Like a Memoir.......2007-03-07
Ha Jin, War Trash: A Novel, New York: Pantheon Books, 2004.
352 pages
ISBN: 0-375-42276-5
"War trash" refers to the human detritus of war, the throwaways, the men still living but accorded no honor, in spite of their performance as soldiers. This is the story of one among a number of these men, a Chinese soldier imprisoned in an American prisoner-of-war camp in Korea during the Korean War. His rare English language skills and the opportunities they afford him to interact with a wide range of inmates and officers as interpreter elevate him to a position unlikely for an otherwise ordinary soldier required to fight for the Communists in the Chinese infantry. Though not a Party member, he is nevertheless driven to return to the mainland at the close of the war in order to re-join his mother and fiancée. Personally apolitical, he is caught between dissent and conformity, faced with the choice of repatriating in Red China where he will not be welcomed by the Party, or joining the Nationalists in Taiwan with no opportunity of seeing his mother and fiancée again.
The language is a bit stiff, but this helps the book read more like a memoir than a novel. Though most characters are fictional, events and specific details are not. Meticulous research and attention to detail in the descriptions of incidents of horror on the battlefield, in the camp hospital, and in the camp compounds, and a deep understanding of the political twists and deceptions that create the narrator's dilemma, lend the narrative a level of realism not frequently found in a work of fiction.
Ha Jin is a native of China, educated in the U.S. and currently an English professor at Boston University, and an author of several novels and books of poetry and short stories. War Trash won for its author the PEN/Faulkner Award; Ha Jin has also won the National Book Award, the Asian American Literary Award, the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, and the PEN/Hemingway Award. This is the first of his books I've read; I look forward to more.
Worthwhile.......2007-02-26
It's likely that neither Ha Jin nor his publisher ever expected his novel, War Trash, to become a best seller or anything. It is, after all, the story of Chinese prisoners-of-war in American prison camps in South Korea during the Korean War. Not exactly the kind of thing most people think about first thing in the morning. But if the goal of a good novel is to entertain and to inform, then this one passes with flying colors.
It is narrated in the first person by Yu Yuan, one of the few captured Chinese with an education and one of the fewer still who was able to speak a smattering of English. Though not a communist, he nevertheless associated with them because he knew it was his only hope to return to mainland China, where both his ailing mother and fiancee resided. If he were to side with the Nationalists, he would be repatriated to Taiwan, with never a hope of visiting mainland China again. (This, by the way, was very interesting. Many Chinese looked upon their prisoner status as a way by which to escape the newly formed communist government in mainland China.)
And, as it turns out, it is the great conflict of the novel. Both Nationalist and communist forces struggled mightily with each other for the hearts and minds of those unallied prisoners, and often in the most brutal fashion. As one with an education and one who spoke English, the narrator himself was considered a prize, and therefore received a great deal of attention from both sides. Indeed, after being knocked unconscious one night, the words, "f*** communism," were tattooed in bold fashion across his belly by the Nationalists, who assumed he would have no choice but to side with them. This, it turns out, was a rather common tactic.
But the narrator refused to side with them--although occasionally pretending to do so out of fear or self-preservation--instead staying allied with his communist protectors only so that he could return to his girlfriend and mother. This is the plot. Both his and his fellow prisoner's struggle for survival in the prison, and the unwavering behind-the-barbed-wire war between the Nationalists and the communists with the narrator as the fulcrum point, are what comprise the bulk of the novel.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who has any knowledge of history at all to learn that the narrator's ultimate repatriation to mainland China was bitterly disappointing. Though not a communist, he was still a traitor, you see, for allowing himself to be captured. He found that his mother had died, and that his girlfriend could not afford to associate with him any more, in that he was a "disgraced captive." The narrator was assigned to a middle-school in the hinterlands as a teacher for the remainder of his career, a sentence not nearly so dreary as those given to the true communists he associated with in the camps.
No, this book is not a bestseller, but it is nevertheless an important book and a book that needs to be read by Americans, many of whom seem to be utterly unaware of the dangers posed by unwavering, tyrannical political ideologies, and the horrors that have been inflicted on mankind because of them.
Educational and timely, but not the most engaging read.......2007-01-12
I admire the way Ha Jin crafted this story - how much research it must've taken! I admit I've never known much about the Korean War and never even thought about China's role in it. The story, therefore, elucidated a period in time I hadn't known or thought much about. With this book Ha Jin definitely taught me something and made me think.
The great thing about Jin is that, even though the plot doesn't grab a hold of you like his other novel "Waiting," he creates characters that allow you to experience another person's tribulations so clearly and you are able to truly empathize. I think that hearing about POW's on the news will now impact me in a different way upon reading this book. POW's are not just a label for a group of captured soldiers, but rather individuals who struggle to make decisions, based on both loyalty and fear, who have families and dreams of their own. Quite a timely book in light of the state of affairs in the world now.
To me, well written and quite interesting and educational.
Devastating.......2006-09-28
War Trash is a devastating depiction of what happens when human beings are trapped in the political machinations of war. A Chinese soldier fighting in the Korean War hides his true motivations and must assign his desires political meaning in order to find his way home from Stripped of all moral compasses, he strategizes his allegiances in exchange for a piece of his soul.
War Trash shows what it's like when all choices are ambiguous both in terms of their outcome and their morality. The soldier is batted around prison camps and witnesses the horrors of war, not in the obscenity of the battlefield but in the grotesqueness of the power struggles for people's hearts and minds. Like in Kozinsky's Painted Bird, human ugliness surfaces when societal codes give way to codes of war, and are revealed to be everpresent and awaiting exploitation.
War Trash is riveting but painful to read, a starkly written cry against the human effects of wars, strident ideologies and unrelenting systems.

Product Description
From Publishers Weekly:
An enigmatic young man's preternatural gift for fishing changes the fabric of a rural North Carolina village during the post-WWII years in Kay's latest, a dreamy, poignant and richly written novel, marred somewhat by slow pacing. Noah Locke, a quiet, earnest veteran from Georgia, arrives in Bowerton, called by some the Valley of Light, and quickly becomes known for his fishing skills; the welcoming locals promptly invite him to participate in their upcoming fishing contest. He settles in, earning his keep as a housepainter, and soon meets Eleanor Cunningham, a comely young widow whose husband died, an apparent suicide, after coming home from the war. Their romance develops hesitantly, largely due to Noah's shyness, and while Kay pens some lovely scenes of rural life, the narrative doesn't move much faster. Before the contest commences, a young boy whom Noah had befriended goes missing and, after several agonizing days, Noah finds the body. He realizes that the boy died trying to catch a legendary fish that Noah himself had been chasing, after hearing about it from a benevolent but mysterious old man. Kay's lush descriptions form a shimmering backdrop to his gracefully drawn protagonists, but the romance is somewhat predictable, and the fishing subplot-the search for a mythic bass-does not fully sustain narrative tension. Kay (To Dance with a White Dog) comes close to generating suspense in the chapters describing the questionable conduct of Eleanor's husband following the war, but it's too bad there isn't a more compelling plot to anchor the graceful writing.

Book Description
Victoria is nervous, yet thrilled, to be plucked from the many debutantes who vied for the hand of Robert, the Duke of Killingworth. Yet how well does she really know this man? And what happened to his twin, mysteriously "gone to America" never to be seen again. And it is true, the man she married seems kinder, more generous, more loving, than the man to whom she became engaged.
What Victoria doesn't know is that the man who she became engaged to is not the man she has married. For the real Robert has been unjustly and secretly imprisoned for years, lured away by his jealous twin, John, kept in secret by bribes and deception.
Now, Robert has escaped––astonishingly trading spots with John––and he has married Victoria. What will she do when she discovers the truth?

Fast Read.......2007-02-11
This book finally rose to the top of my to-be-read pile and I'm happy that it did. It hooked me from the very beginning and I read it in one night.
The author did a great job at making the characters come alive!
Another great by Lorrine.......2006-08-16
Lorrine Heath is one of my favorite writers of all times. I wish there were more books written by her. No one creates better heroes then her. In her novel a matter of Temptation she takes a classic tale and creates a sizzling romance. Robert comes across as such a sweet hero that you almost want to cry. The ending is wonderful. I wish I could go on reading another 500 pages. The heroine is a classic Heath female character. Fans of Heath and all the genre lovers will not be disappointed
ok but................2005-11-14
Lorraine heath is perhaps the best writer in the western genre. Her books are excellent without exception so it is with much disappointment that she has moved on to regency bks. A Matter of Temptation is a cute read along the lines of the 'man in the iron mask' wherein one brother has his twin locked up so he can take over the birthright and riches of the firstborn. Iron Mask is in a class by itself as an old classic movie, and I don't know how it is in book form. This story by Heath is not a very good replica if we compare the two. The dialogue is great.......totally heath dialogue...and the characters are likeable (except the bad guy of course). My main problem with the book itself is that it is 400 pages of 'thoughts, feelings, and whether he should consumate marriage with his "brothers" fiance" or not. Very little physical action (other than bed)..and then after all that, the last 20-25 pages are devoted to the bad guy breaking out and being caught, etc.....20 out of almost 400 is a bit disproportionate. If it were not a Heaht book, I would not have finished it. And it never really delineated how he proved which one was the real duke and which was the imposter........sorry, LH.......i do love your westerns though........texas destiny and its offshoots are real keeprs..
slow going but interesting.......2005-10-24
I was intrigued by the premise for this story as "Man in the Iron Mask" is one of my favorite books of all time. Lorrain Heath had a good idea. The problem is that the characters spend entirely to much time thinking and not enough time doing anything. While it is interesting to see Robert's reactions and thoughts after so many years of imprisonment it becomes tiresome after a while when that's all that's happening. I also was disappointed that Robert decided at least twice that "tomorrow" he was going to tell his wife the truth and let the opportunities pass him by. He really brought about his own downfall when John escaped, because he should have told Torie way before he did. I can't say that I wholeheartedly recommend this book but if you like Lorraine Heath anyway it is worth a read. I was most intrigued by the end with John and wonder if Lorraine is possibly going to try to rehabilitate him in another book. That could make for a good story. I'll be keeping my eyes open.
Sizzling and Seductive.......2005-10-24
I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. This was just the kind of romance novel I love. There are interesting plot twists and we get to know several secondary characters well. The secondary characters are not boring. The chemistry between Robert & Torie was very sensual and immediate. Wonderful love story, great characters with an emotionally scarred hero and strong but vulnerable heroine, unique setting, intriguing plot, heart-tugging emotion, excellent writing, intense sensual love scenes, and a superb ending. The plot was interesting and it kept you interested in what was going to happen next. It has intrigue, passion, revenge, and "wow" sensual tension. Most of all is the character development. I love stories that are character driven and not just about lust. I loved seeing Robert & Torie fall in love. From page one the characters in this charming book reached out and grabbed me. Page after page I just got sucked in deeper until I closed the book with a happy sigh. I loved how conclusion with Robert's brother came about. This a deeper romance book than most so some readers might not enjoy it. but I LOVED it! I'm always looking for a book with a plot that intrigues me. A Matter of Temptation did that in spades.
All I can say in conclusion is if you like a good, emotional, heart-tugging historical, with characters that leap off the pages, buy A Matter of Temptation.

True, she does not love him, but it is her duty to marry well. But a much-altered Robert stands beside her on their wedding day ... a man somehow more considerate and charming than ever before ... and so sensuously alluring that Torie is determined to be a temptation her husband can't resist! 40K History.......2006-11-10
The book is excellent giving a more indepth look at the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Gives a broader picture than individual books in the 40K series.
Good reference material.......2006-06-25
This book provides a good reference to follow the stories written by Dan Abnett for Warhammer 40K (Eisenhorn series, Gaunt's Ghost series, Ravenor series, and other short stories). The maps of the planet systems provides good reference for following each character's action in the 40K world and provides the reader reference material to develop their own campaigns. Some of the artwork is of modified black and white photos of models to make it gritty and dirty as if taken live action in combat. Personally would have preferred either full color photos of the actual model or even a computer artist rendition of the vehicles being mentioned.
This book only covers part of the Crusade and would have preferred more maps and a reference roster of the main combatants engaged in each of the planets.
Good, but.......2006-02-01
I got this book expecting it to be full of WH40K artwork, but most graphics are pictures that have been digitally altered such as taking a picture of a planet and throwing some blurry outlines of starships in it. Lack of clarity is attributed to warp distortion. I know they probably did this to add a sense of realism, but I thought it made a poor product. If the picture says it is a White Scars Astartes then you shouldn't have to stare at a blurry image trying to figure out if the caption is a typo.
The maps are so basic they are pointless.
The few illustrations are very nice, and the text is very good and informative. However, I didn't think this book was worth the price.
You think you know the Warhammer 40,000 universe?Think again.......2006-01-11
This giant, over sized book is a comprehensive account of the first twenty years of The Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The Imperial Guard, Space Marines, and Navy fight crushing battles against the dread menace of Chaos. This is detailed/narrated by Antonid Biota, a senior tactician on the front line, assigned to the staff of Lord General Van Voytz. Biota has been in the thick of the combat right from the beginning and is able to tell it like it is.
Illustrations abound within the covers and you will find many maps and notes. There are even copies of the Casualty Listings. Pictures, not just illustrations, show the details of the hardware and weapons used by the brave souls that hold Chaos at bay. Confidential orders are spread out for you to read. There are even detailed spreadsheets showing the layers within the Hive cites, such as Sangrel Hive (page 16). Troopers, majors, captains, ranks of all types tell about the battles they faced and the horrors they witnessed. By the end you will feel as though you were there yourself.
All the plans and politics are laid bare for all to see, such as a chart detail showing Cybon's proposed rimward expedition, circa 463, and the trailing zones of the Cabal Systems, showing the border worlds assaulted during Macaroth's initial phase in 770-771 (page 68). The Blood Pact is thoroughly explained, squadron badges are shown, and you even get to see, up close, the ships flown. (The Navy Thunderbolt, Cypra-Mundi Pattern XXI, of the One Hundred and First Pacificus Navy Elite Wing, the 'Apostles' Plane, serial 4548456, flown by Major Dario Quint, "Ace of Aces", is shown on page 82).
***** If you think you know all there is to know about the Warhammer 40,000 universe, then you are sadly mistaken. Your imagination cannot possibly do the battles and weapons justice. This is your one chance to own a piece of the action, to see it through the eyes of those who fought in the bloody clashes. As the Saint Sabbat, Epistles cites, "There are no miracles. There are only men." *****

Informative and essential background info to the Gaunt novels.......2005-12-26
Dan Abnett's The Sabbat Worlds Crusade for Games Workshop's Black Library line of books is a must-have for readers of Abnett's series of novels featuring Gaunt and his Ghosts. Though it only makes passing mention to the exploits of Gaunt and his regiment, The Tanith First and Only, it does fill in alot of the background of what the Sabbat Worlds Crusade is all about.
The book describes in detail what the Sabbat Worlds are and how it was founded in the Imperium's past, but it also gives more information to the important characters mentioned only by name in the novels: Warmaster Slaydo and his successor Macaroth up to the many generals and commanders of both the crusading armies and their enemies. Other information included are descriptions of battle and campaign tactics for the early part of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade before Gaunt and his Tanith made their appearance.
The only negative thing i can say about the book is that it ends right up to the point of the latest Gaunt novel. This means there will be a second or maybe even a third book detailing the Sabbat Worlds Crusade and some may not call that a bad thing, but a good thing indeed.

Biblical parenting involves encouraging, exhorting, and empathizing with children according to their unique needs and character. This re-release of Different Children, Different Needs clarifies what the Bible means when it commands us to "train up a child in the way he should go" (Proverbs 22:6). It teaches moms and dads how to understand the personality God has given each of their children and how to tailor their parenting styles to meet their children's needs. Pastor Charles Boyd uses the popular DISC personality assessment model to help parents better recognize, accept, and appreciate their kids' temperaments.

Different Children, Different Needs : Understanding the Unique Personality of Your Child.......2006-03-07
Charles Boyd does a wonderful job of writing this book to help parents understand the need to parent children to their unique personalities.
I like how he uses the DISC Model that helps parents understand that their personality and their child's personality can work together even if at opposite ends of the spectrum. I have taught these principles in parenting classes using this book and found parents have a AHAA! moment when it dawns on them why their child follows them around all evening. The parents realized that their children just needed to be nurtured based on their personality styles.
I like how the book is written as a study book for parenting groups. It gives another way for parents to gather together, share ideas, and learn new strategies about children.
This is a must read for parents.

LOVE IT!.......2004-02-14
I loved this book. It is very easy to read and understand and has helped me to see others differently, and recognize how personalities truly affect relationships. Knowledge is the key, and once I understand why someone behaves the way they do, I can recognize that they really aren't just trying to annoy me, and learn to adjust. I also see my own weaknesses and can work on those. No one is DEFINED by their personality type. We all have choices to make in life, but understanding your normal tendencies can help you to become a more balance person. And having a daughter that is so different from me, I really enjoyed the section in this book on how each personality type relates to the others- strengths, struggles, and strategies. Definitely recommend!
Great Book for Parents.......2002-03-27
I am really enjoying this book. I say enjoying instead of enjoyed because it is a great reference for me. I have four kids and each child is TOTALLY different. This book has been an eye-opener to help me cater to each on according to their individual needs. This book is an easy read and very spiritual. I've been recommending it to every parent that I know who has more than one child.
No more gimmicks, please!.......2002-02-01
The DISC personality system on which all of the parenting advice in this book is based reminds me of your run-of-the-mill horoscopes, Birthday books, birth-order personality descriptions, and other miscellanea of that ilk: entertaining, but not particularly helpful. In responding to the various, hugely UN-specific statements that help determine your personality type and your child's, I found I had a different answer for different circumstances, moods, or times of day. For instance, in the section that determines if you are a fast- or slow-placed person, you circle 1 if you make up your mind quickly, or circle 2 if you take your time in decision-making. Well, am I deciding which preschool to send my child to, or choosing shampoo at the store? Different circumstances, different answers.
In addition to disliking the basis for the book, I found the parenting advice to be very basic. "Do not become impatient with the child. Don't rush or push him. . .Be open at times if your child suggests a different way of doing something. . .Realize that some conflict and change is healthy. . .," etc. Be aware, too, that this book is written from a fundamentalist Christian viewpoint--the author is a southern Baptist minister and liberally sprinkles the pages with Bible verses and other evangelical language.
The one part of the book that I enjoyed was a couple of pages of positive "one-liners" you can use to build your child's self-confidence: for example, instead of saying "What's taking you so long?" you can say, "You do things precisely and accurately." That is very much in line with the whole "observe, don't judge" philosophy of child psychologist Haim Ginott which I try to follow.
There are many more helpful parenting books out there--keep searching.
Here's a key to a difficult child's heart!.......2001-08-31
This book will help you understand that different personalities aren't right or wrong, they are just different.
Using the DISC personality profile descriptions this easy to understand book can help you re-open closed communication lines with your child who is different than you in action, thought, and deed.
It's as simple as starting by asking yourself is he/she "slow-paced" or "fast-paced", "task-oriented" or "people-oriented"? I'm an associate pastor in a large church. Our children's minister is planning to use this book with teachers and parents. Her quote is, "Why should we wait until we are over 40 years old to understand this stuff?"
