4 out of 5 stars Ulterior Motives Review.......2006-03-26

In this third book of the series, Terri Blackstock introduces a new character to the mix. While still excellent, the characters don't have as much punch as in the previous two books. Her characters' struggles with coming to the Lord need to be better worked out. Still, this is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Blackstock Book!.......2005-08-03

Terri Blackstock is not only one of the most unique writers today, incorporating her stong faith in her work; but is also among the very best in creating compelling plots and people about whom the reader cares. This talent is increasingly rare, even among the "best-selling" secular authors. --Ron Howe (a.k.a., Toby Martin II)

5 out of 5 stars Terri does it again! This is a great book!.......2000-04-16

This is a great book, as are all Terri's books! She keeps you guessing and in suspense. As always, she provides you with biblical answers to difficult situations. She doesn't skirt or sugarcoat the hard issues, but deals with them head on.

4 out of 5 stars 4 in one.......2007-04-05

I had read the first book from this set at the library. I was looking to purchase them all and this book came through. All of the stories are great. They have a good plot, with a good amount of suspense. I like how Blackstock uses the 'stars' of all 4 books in the set to help each other within the series. If you enjoy other suspense {mystery} novels I highly recommend this read.

5 out of 5 stars The Sun Coast Chronicles.......2007-01-03

Anything by Terri Blackstock is worth the time invested in reading. Love her books and actually bought this one as a gift for my granddaughter, who enjoyed it and is now reading another of Terri's books.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Mary Higgins Clark!.......2003-01-21

A Christian version of suspense queen Mary Higgins Clark? Terri Blackstock's skill at writing suspense fiction reminded me much of the mystery queen. "Evidence of Mercy" (available as a separate novel, or as one of four best-selling Blackstock novels in the "Suncoast Chronicles" anthology) is a humdinger of a suspense story, revolving around the lives of three main characters. The main protagonist, Lynda, is a Christian lawyer whose life is threatened by an unknown killer. The second central character is the atheist Jake, who becomes a paraplegic after crashing on Lynda's sabotaged plane while test-flying it as a prospective buyer. The third main character is one of Lynda's clients, Paige, a single parent trying to avoid her abusive ex-husband. Suspense mounts as the mystery killer and his motive remain unidentified in the first half of the story.

The first story in this collection, "Evidence of Mercy", is a terrific and captivating story that draws you in, and at the same time gives you much to think about, because the characters not only battle a mysterious killer, but also their own personalities and weaknesses. Much Christian fiction falls into the trap of featuring an artificial conversion story. Terri Blackstock shows that writers can craft a mouth-watering Christian story without artificially sprinkling it with an obvious theological twist of this kind, and yet retain a deeper spiritual significance. In the afterword, Blackstock explains that the idea of her book came after a personal struggle with her faith, and the growing awareness that faith needs to be put into action. "I thought I believed, I said I believed - but I did nothing to put the belief into action. I was neither hot nor cold, but luke-warm, and absolutely fruitless." The title "Evidence of Mercy" describes this important spiritual theme that Blackstock wants to convey. The struggles of the three characters mirror Blackstock's own struggles, as she explains: "the characters interested me because their own spiritual battles were so much like my own: Lynda, a lukewarm Christian who would let someone die without witnessing to him; Jake, an agnostic who couldn't give up the pilot's seat in his life until it was taken from him; and Paige, a spiritual infant on the verge of belief, who lacked the faith to make the final plunge." For instance, Lynda comes to conclude "she'd made a god of an airplane, an altar of her job, and an idol of her ego" (p.38), and Jake realizes the folly of relying on his good looks: "If I'd known I was going to be left with just my character, I'd have worked harder at building some." (p.135) Without taking on an preaching tone that many Christian writers unwittingly do, Blackstock brings out these important spiritual truths by showing them in the lives of her characters in a convincing and persuasive manner. The other three stories in this anthology are equally good. In fact, I find them to be on a higher level than Dee Henderson's popular books.

Terri Blackstock's novels are a welcome addition to the ranks of Christian fiction. The genre has been dominated especially by the historical romance, much of it inferior to secular fictions on most levels. With her successful efforts in suspense fiction genre, Terri Blackstock shows that it doesn't have to be that way (aside from an unnecessary kiss in the last pages), and that Christian writers can successfully take on new genres, and do so with style. As a fan of suspense fiction, I'm grateful to see Christian writers provide exciting alternatives to secular novels in the genre. Move over Mary Higgins Clark!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic series at a fantastic price!.......2001-06-14

I read the Sun Coast Chronicles series almost a year ago and can't say enough about Terri Blackstock's ability to weave suspense, mystery, romance and inspiration in such an entertaining package.

In the Sun Coast Chronicles, there are four stories with interrelated characters in the same town in California. Each hero/heroine is forced to deal with something outside themselves, usually a bad character and at the same time, something inside themselves, their faith in God.

Terri Blackstock is one of the premier Christian writers, and I highly recommend this series. And to get all four of them together in such a great price, it makes me wish I hadn't read them yet!

5 out of 5 stars Great Mystery and Suspense.......2001-03-08

I finished this book in two days, I was so caught up in it. It is much better than the Newpointe 911 I started with. I would encourage anyone who likes suspense and mystery to read it. Although I have figured out the killer rather quickly it still kept my interest.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable romance from Ms Leone.......2005-11-18

I'm way late in discovering this terrific author and unfortunately, it seems she is concentrating on her fantasy books written as Laura Resnick in lieu of romances. I had no idea that his book was originally published by Silhouette in 1989. I got my hands on this re-issue from Wildeside Press (and likely paid more than twice the original price for it) and it was worth every penny IMO.

Shelley Baird is running the premier language school in Cincinnati and enjoying her success while attending a reception being held by one of her biggest clients. Across the room she sees a gorgeous man with black hair and lively blue eyes and she's instantly interested. When their eyes meet, something just clicks but as he makes his way to her, one of the wait staff spills a sangria all over her! Wow, what a great first impression! Fortunately, he's not scared off and offers to drive her home. He proves to be just as nice and interesting and sexy as she had originally thought. Unfortunately, she learns that he works for her competitor and has a mandate to shake things up and aggressively pursue new business. Bottom line, he's the enemy. Oh why did they have to have such strong chemistry?

Ross Tanner is determined to achieve his company's goals but he also really wants to spend time with Shelley. She's sweet, smart and fun but she also sees him as her enemy. She's called a halt to their budding romance much to Ross' frustration. How can he make her see that their work has nothing to do with their relationship? Unfortunately, the success that Ross is able to affect is coming directly at Shelley's expense. What can he possibly do to keep Shelley in his life?

I really liked this story. The relationship was romantic and fun, their conflict was real and believable and the resolution made sense. I admired and liked Shelley and Ross was just totally yummy! Though a bit pricey for so short a book (under 150 pages), I highly recommend it and will be looking for more of her backlist. Especially an affordable copy of FEVER DREAMS!

5 out of 5 stars He Came to Take Her Business. Will he Take Her Instead?.......2004-07-13

Shelly Baird is the director of the Babel Language Center in Cincinnati, Ohio and as the book opens she is at a party hosted by Keene International, an account she dearly wants to get. Across the room she locks eyes with a handsome stranger. Shelly is not the kind of girl to look away first. In fact she's not the kind of girl to look away at all. She's so caught up with the stranger that she bumps a waitress, who spills about a gallon of sangria on her.

Quick as a wink the stranger is at her side. He introduces himself as Ross Tanner and offers to drive her home. When she see his Porsche, she wants to ride with the top down, to heck with the cold night air. At her place, sparks fly, but nothing happens. She does however tell him what she does for a living.

Later we learn that her competition in the Executive language teaching business in town is the Elite Language Center, run by Charles Winston-Clark, or as Shelly refers to him, Chuck. Chuck, it , has done every underhanded thing he can think of to try and get Shelly's business, from annoying phone calls to spreading innuendos about her around town and still she's beaten the pants off him, business wise.

So the boys at Chuck's head office have send a big gun to town to turn their business around. And that gun is none other than Ross Tanner, who wants to both ruin Shelly business, but have a relationship with her at the same time.

And there you have the plot in a nutshell. Ms. Leone has written a story that had me thoroughly enthralled. Her characters are more than believable, they're likable and we want to know more about them, and isn't that what makes us read fiction, real to life characters. I'm giving this one five stars, because I just loved it.

When Jonathan Goodman witnesses a murder in the parking lot of Megasoft just two weeks after an assassination attempt on company founder and presidential hopeful Jack Malcom, the twists and turns of this high-tech thriller slip right into gear. Goodman, the young project manager for a much-hyped new interactive-TV software program, attempts to unravel the tangles of the mysterious killing (the body later disappears and all traces of the murdered man are erased from existence), only to find himself fighting a conspiracy that seems to encompass presidential politics, terrorism, software espionage, and more.

The lure of this book is the insight into the computer industry. Author Daniel Oran has an insider's view into the workings of Microsoft, as he was the program manager who invented the Start button and Taskbar for Windows 95. Reading this book, one can't help but substitute Microsoft for Megasoft and Bill Gates for Jack Malcom, relishing the details of how life operates behind the scenes at the software giant. This novel offers some frightening possibilities as Oran exposes how your ordinary PC could turn into Big Brother.

Despite some uneven moments, the technological aspects and potential for mishap and crime in Oran's novel are sure to foster a budding genre of computer thrillers. Anyone with access to a computer will enjoy the view Oran provides into the dealings of the tech industry; the plot will have you looking at your own computer with a suddenly suspicious eye. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read!.......2002-01-26

I was e-mailed a few years ago by Danny. Being a bit pessimistic about the way I was confronted, I decided to read about the book and read the reviews on "Ulterior Motive". Looked interesting enough so I decided to buy it. I'll tell you, I'm not sorry in the least as this is one of the best first novels I've ever read. Danny writes as though he's been writing fiction for years. Had he not e-mailed me, I may never have heard about his book.

The story tells of an employee at Megasoft who enjoys his job and co-workers totally. He and his friend, Kenny, are banging heads in a positive way in their great working relationship and close friendship. You feel their closeness as much as you fear for them when they uncover what's fishy at Megasoft. The founder, JackM, is running for president with a faithful following by his employees. You trust him. You respect him. You fear him. You ache for Jon as his wonderful world slowly slips away from him.

Ulterior Motive is a must read. You'll be very disappointed if you don't because you're missing one hell of a read and one fast paced book

Danny---we need MORE fiction from you!! Great job!

5 out of 5 stars Never see a plot as thick. Ten-thumbs up if I have ten........1999-08-26

Finally, here arrived a comtemporary high-tech/computer-industry/intelligence based futurist fiction. There are so many micro-plots and big plots. Each player has ambitions and weakness for money and power. Still want a job at MegaSoft to become a puppy?

5 out of 5 stars So much for Orwell's "1984"...........1999-06-17

Loosely based on a certain software giant in Washington, this is a great, suspenseful read. While I very much enjoyed all of the intrigue of the politics, office hierarchy and sniping, what riveted me most was the insider's view of what it is like at a high-tech company such as Microsoft, sorry, Megasoft. As anyone who uses a computer knows, there is more information about us out there on the Internet than we would want anyone to know. The fact that it would be possible to be monitored by "Big Brother" is extremely scary, made even scarier by the fact that it is entirely possible. I read the book when it first came out and just re-read it this past weekend. It is definitely a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars This book was great!!.......1999-05-07

I thought the book was interesting and exciting. I look for a book that will capture and continue to hold you to the end. I felt this book was well written and definately something everyone should read.

4 out of 5 stars Very exciting, informative, non-stop action!.......1999-04-25

I liked the way the characters were developed as well as the way Dan Oran provided an insight into the computer world explaining the technical terms so that the lay person could grasp the meanings and how they fit into the story line. The relationship between Jon and Kenny was realistic as well as the growing romance between Jon and Karen. The book progressed into a very fast-paced thriller with twists and turns that keep your attention until the very last page. I am very definitely looking forward to Mr. Oran's next book.

5 out of 5 stars "Who Shot J.R.?" mystery in real life........2002-04-30

A greater mystery than "Who Shot J.R.?" is "Who Shot Henry Kyle?" - a former Texas multi-millionaire and wannabe big-time Hollywood producer. The handsome, flamboyant tycoon was found in a pool of his own blood in his posh Beverly Hills mansion. After suspecting a burglar, police soon added to their suspect list several prople with reasons to have Kyle killed....... the "mystery wife" who suddenly appeared at the funeral; the gorgeous out-of-wedlock daughter who was starved for love and addicted to cocaine; a troubled son about to be disinherited; and a long list of girl friends, ex-wives, and unsavory acquaintances. Author Suzanne Finstad has skillfully untangled this web of money, murder, and betrayal with all the glamour and intrigue of a real-life "Dallas."

4 out of 5 stars The son that was convicted guilty buy suspicion........1999-02-13

This book is about the killing of Texas Tycoon Henry Kyle, and how they believed and convicted his son Ricky. Anyway, this book looks deep into how a rich man can have many problems, family separations, and intrigues. The convicted son, who attended the same school as I did is portrayed as a mean kid trying to get his dad will, the investigation made by the author, goes beyond police records and I consider it a great compilation of stories from the people that knew the late Henry Kyle, this book goes on shmooth, and has the reader on the edge.

The Disobedient Virgin is probably one of the most tender love stories I've read by Sandra Marton. She's written so many, but this one especially touched my heart. This book is part of the Ramirez Bride series and the final in that series. What I think is so incredible is that Harlequin chose three authors from three continents.....Sandra Marton (US), Emma Darcy (Australia) and Michelle Reid (UK). This series is about three half brothers scattered to opposite sides of the globe; each must find a bride in order to find each other.

Jake Ramirez has just found himself in a real predicament. He's become a guardian to Catarina, a young woman he's never met and she lives in Brazil. He's also received the news that the father he believed to have died as a soldier and hero was not his father at all. That his biological father was a wealthy Brazilian who recently died and he has two half brothers he didn't know existed. In order to meet these half brothers he must become Cat's guardian and marry her off in order to gain his brother's names.

Cat is a sweet, innocent orphaned girl who is just waiting to turn of age so she can escape the Convent and experience life. Little does she know that her life will change when Jake enters the picture and whisks her away to New York.

Jake is strong, handsome, rich and sexy and a very powerful businessman. His youth was not one to be proud of growing up in the streets of New York, find a little trouble but turning his life around and making himself one of the most powerful and sought after bachelors in New York.

From the moment they meet, anger and sparks fly, plus a tension neither of them understands. Their journey together will melt your heart. However, the final meeting of the brothers in this series was perfect, a perfect ending to a wonderful series.

            BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Catarina Mendes is young, innocent and rich. Jake Ramirez is handsome, worldly, rich... and now he's Cat's guardian. He's supposed to protect her from unscrupulous men and find her a good, solid Brazilian husband. Once Jake does that, Cat will inherit the fortune her parents left her... and Jake will finally learn the identity of his two half-brothers. There's only one problem. Cat's a virgin, and Jake wants her. Can he resist taking what the innocent Cat offers before he finds her a suitable husband?

2 out of 5 stars Immature fixation on fake math/science "aesthetic".......2007-08-27

Lem gives a great demonstration of how not to write a book, with this one.

He builds a robotic universe. The universe is filled with robots and cybernetics. For example, within his narrative, instead of referring to earth dogs, Lem will refer to "St. Cybernards and Cyberman pinschers"-- with an exclamation point, because he..... enjoys coming up with that. (He means St. Bernards and Doberman pinschers.)

Lem puts "cyber-" in front of practically every word in the book. Why would a completely robotic and cybernetic world use the prefix "cyber-" for anything? It would obviously be a waste of time, energy, and totally devoid of meaning. In other words: redundant.

Even though Lem superficially creates his own world purely from his imagination, he constantly resorts to worn-out tropes and cliches for the entire book. All the characters and locales have a feudal, ancient aesthetic. If Lem wanted to write fairy tales about the middle ages, he should have dispensed with the cybernetic veneer. The cliches are dull and tiring, and pretty much endless. At one point Lem even says a character's "wire-hair stood on end."

What kind of self-respecting writer would force a cliche like that into his own otherwise far-removed world? This book may make you ask yourself that very question.

Apart from the cliche, the rest of the text is not much more than incoherent strings of terms from calculus and physics, which appear to be ignorantly pulled out of a glossary. Maybe you'll enjoy that sort of thing, if you're the kind of person who takes pleasure in a "math aesthetic" that has no connection to the actual study of mathematics. Lem describes things as "informational and transformational"-- apparently for no reason other than that those two words sort of rhyme and have a loose floppy air of "technology" about them. A critic's blurb on the back cover says "Lem plays in earnest with every concept [...] from free will to probability theory", but a load of asinine rhymes containing the word "stochastic" is the extent of the so-called "probability theory" you'll experience in this book.

This book is a house of cards built on frauds, shams, and useless wordplay. It has a higher concentration of GROANERS than any book ever written-- I'm pretty sure. By that I mean so-called puns that make you groan. At least, you'll groan inside-- since you'll be reading quietly.

Be forewarned about Solaris too, though that book has its merits. In Solaris too Lem gives an extremely ignorant and misleading tour of "science" and technology.

Skip this book and get Lem's THE FUTUROLOGICAL CONGRESS. I don't have an axe to grind; FAIR IS FAIR. Lem's indulgent there too, but in a way that won't bore you.

I hesitate to recommend Italo Calvino's Cosmicomics in place of the Cyberiad. I remember loving that book, but I was young at the time and it could very well disgust me if I read it again now. NEVERTHELESS, very abstractly speaking it has a kind of common thematic thread with Lem's book, so check it out if you got interested in The Cyberiad because of its themes (bla bla creation of the universe, origins of life, yadda bla bla).

            5 out of 5 stars When I'm down, I just re-read this book.......2007-05-04

I first discovered this book as a teenager, more than 30 years ago. Since then I have read it many times. Recently, I finished reading it aloud at bedtime to my two sons, 11 and 8. They were enthralled. I will never tire of this book and was sad to hear of Lem's death in 2006.

I hope I'm not violating some Amazon rule, but I would say that you should read the review titled "Dazzled" by Amazon Reviewer G. Moses "theonlytruegeo" . I agree with most everything he wrote. The Cyberiad is definitely funny, at times profound, and certainly entertains with character idiosyncracies. The Tale of the Three Story Telling Machines was my very favorite too. Though, in there, I don't think the Mymosh story was the best part. I liked other parts, but it is also the whole of the nested nest of stories -- and it's ending -- that is wonderful. Anyway, go now to that other reviewer and read that review. Hopefully, this consensus is helping you out; we both characterize the book in the same way.

5 out of 5 stars More fairy tales for robots.......2006-01-15

Like "Mortal Engines", "The Cyberiad" is a collection of comic fairy tales about robots. In this case, the two main characters are constructors who can build pretty much anything, including a simulation of the entire universe, though with somewhat mixed results, as in the initial tale with the giant computer that can't quite add (and gets huffy about it).

Brilliant light reading. Calvino is perhaps the best comparison.

                              Book Description

Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.

In this edition, Frederick W. Danker's broad knowledge of Greco-Roman literature, as well as papyri and epigraphs, provides a more panoramic view of the world of Jesus and the New Testament. Danker has also introduced a more consistent mode of reference citation, and has provided a composite list of abbreviations to facilitate easy access to this wealth of information.

Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of "episkopos" was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English.

Danker's edition of Bauer's Wörterbuch will be an indispensable guide for Biblical and classical scholars, ministers, seminarians, and translators.

As an older student of Greek and only recently feeling at ease with the Greek New Testament I am finding this book very useful. I do agree with those who say that the large Liddell and Scott (LSJ) is also very useful. My study so far has been in ancient Greek generally (from Homer to Koine) and I have used LSJ (and the abridged editions) extensively; it a good tool to give New Testament readers a wider view of particular meanings.

So if you can afford it I say buy Danker and LSJ, and if you don't know your Greek accents, get a good book on that too (such as the one by Probert).

Walter Bauer spent five hours every day of his scholarly career working on this invaluable lexicon. This lexicon will open up the world of New Testament Greek to even the beginning scholar. With only a little help and looking through the introduction to the lexicon, this volume will unpack the meaning of all the words in the New Testament and other Early Christian texts. If you are a seminarian, pastor, or interested person, this is a must have volume for your shelves.

This is indispensable. Proper Greek study and exegesis CANNOT be done without this resource. The down side? A bit pricy. But it more than pays for itself. WARNING: Pick up the most recent edition (the third, I believe); the changes are staggering and affect meaning.

For much less than the price of this lexicon, one can purchase a copy of Thayer's, AND Trenchard's vocabulary guide AND a Greek concordance. Academic snobs make a big deal about how Thayer's lexicon is out of date because he did not have access to the papyri, but for 99% of New Testament words and meanings this is not an issue. Trenchard's book is actually MORE helpful, in my opinion, than this or any lexicon because he simply lists every possible meaning of each word. One way to get to the essence of a word's meaning is to look at the cognates, and Trenchard lists them all. A Greek concordance will actually print all the NT uses of a word in Greek. Bauer's lexicon is just not that helpful and is too wordy.

Excellent resource for any Greek scholar. The only reason it deserves a four-star is because new editions have since been released. I'd recommend an up-to-date edition; however, the earlier edition has not hindered my academics.

This index lists, in the order in which they appear in the New Testament, all the New Testament entries of the "Bauer-Arndt-Gingrich Greek Lexicon (BAG)." It is based on the second edition of BAG and is set in readable Greek type.

I've been using the Index weekly for 13 years. It greatly increases the ease of locating entries and the Greek lexical form of the NT text in the Second Edition. I'm waiting for a similar index to be published for the Third Edition, and when it's out, I'll buy it!

3 out of 5 stars A Help For The Real Greek Student.......2000-01-11

Unlike most contemporary Greek helps, Alsop's index doesn't do all of the work for you. It does however, greatly reduce the time you will spend using B.A.G.D. Students who are familiar with B.A.G.D. will spend less time finding the root stem of words in the New Testament that have contracted and elided beyond recognition. Tasks such as parsing are left to the student.
