Book Description

Three of New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman's most popular novels are together for the first time in one volume.

Tony Hillerman is one of the most revered and honored mystery writers published today. This stunning collection includes the critically acclaimed novels Skinwalkers, A Thief of Time, and Coyote Waits, all of which have been adapted for PBS by producer Robert Redford. This is a must-have anthology from one of the great masters of suspense.

In Skinwalkers, three shotgun blasts explode into the trailer of Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Chee survives to join partner Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn in a frightening investigation that takes them into a dark world of ritual, witchcraft, and blood -- all tied to the elusive and evil "skinwalker." In A Thief of Time, a noted anthropologist vanishes at a moonlit Indian ruin where "thieves of time" ravage sacred ground for profit. When two corpses appear amid stolen goods and bones at an ancient burial site, Leaphorn and Chee must plunge into the past to unearth the astonishing truth behind a mystifying series of horrific murders.

And in Coyote Waits, it wasn't the car fire that killed Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez -- a bullet did. Officer Jim Chee's good friend Del lies dead, and a whiskey-soaked Navajo shaman is found with the murder weapon. The old man is Ashie Pinto. He's quickly arrested for homicide and defended by a woman Chee could either love or loathe. But Pinto won't utter a word of confession or denial. Leaphorn and Chee must unravel a complex plot involving a historical find, a lost fortune, and the mythical Coyote, who is always waiting, and always hungry.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless except for Robin Schone's story.......2006-11-25

Three of these stories were very disappointing, but don't give up on this book until you've given Robin Schone's story a try!

"Mastering Lady Lucinda" will be erotic only for those who get off on rape and sour writing. Even the butler used her before she 'triumphed' by coldly getting off on it more than the men did. Tiresomely crude, emotionless, vulgar and totally unbelievable. Lots of cold, power-tripping, manipulative sex doesn't add up to erotica. I was totally turned off.

"The Pleasure Game" is just ridiculous. These folks need to get over themselves.

"Risking it All" is a sweet and sexy bit of fluff. But at least I liked these characters.

And then there is the truly erotic and romantic "A Man and A Woman" by Robin Schone - one of the best erotic writers ever. I loved these characters and was enthralled by their growing willingness to help each other discover the delights and intimacy of sex despite the fact that neither was physically perfect or young. A powerful example of how to blend erotic sex with passionate feelings. Ms Schone obviously researched what is and isn't possible for castrated men. She got the facts right *and* made the reader truly want him to find release and redemption with an understanding, sensual, willing and eager woman. Yes, women in their middle years can still be strongly sexual.

3 out of 5 stars From Back Cover.......2006-04-17

Beatrice Small - Mastering Lady Lucinda
The members of the underground club, The Devil's Disciples, are prepared to give Lady Lucinda Harrington an unforgettable lesson in seduction-but it it the gentlemen, and not Lucinda, who are left begging for more.

Susan Johnson - Risking It All
When the destitute Felicia Greenwood wins the gamble of her life with the aid of the Duke of Grafton, she never expects to receive an introduction to the delectable delights of desire.

Thea Devine - The Pleasure Game
When Regina Olney learns that longtime friend, Jeremy Gavage, is devising a scheme to thwart her plans of pursuing a notorious rake, she seeks revenge by playing a wickedly sensuous game of searing passion.

Robin Schone - A Man And A Woman
Hoping to experience once again the intimacies shared with a man, widowed Megan Branwell engages in a charade with Connor Treffrey that will take them both on a breathless journey of indescribable pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Thea's story is my favorite.......2005-07-26

Thea Devine's story alone makes the book worth the money. However, all the stories and authors are strong.

5 out of 5 stars The 5 Stars Belong to Robin Schone Only.......2005-03-28

Like the previous anthology 'Fascinated', Robin Schone's short story 'A Man and A Woman' is the only reason for anyone to read this book. Skip the rest of the stories unless trite plots and really scary prose are your cup of tea. I'm sorry, but it's hard to get turned-on when the word 'throbbing love lance' keeps getting tossed about.

The other stories were pretty forgettable too.

I find it rather disturbing that some reviewers don't seem to be emotionally mature enough to understand that sex, no matter what age, is still a healthy and normal human function. Frankly, I've always liked when a writer isn't afraid to take a risk by creating characters that aren't the standard romance trope. I don't know about most romance readers, but I've a rather sophisticated palate and can handle characters and situations that haven't been done before. That's always been the big problem with romance - the unwillingness to take risks. Thankfully we have Ms. Schone who obviously isn't.

I loved Megan and Connor (known as Mohmmed)- they were so beautiful and you felt their need for this basic human connection. Your heart just goes out for Megan, who has spent most of her life in a marriage completely devoid of even an embrace, and how she craves just to be touched.

And Connor - yes, the whole eunuch aspect isn't easy to read about, but it was a part of history and it did happen (read Anne Rice's 'Cry to Heaven' about the Italian castrati). But just because he might have been missing a certain part, that doesn't diminish him as a man - and that's another great thing - makes the reader consider what exactly being a 'man' is.

Ms. Schone has the ability to create rich and multifaceted characters in a short amount of space, and erotic tension that just won't let go. She creates characters that you really love and who feel real. The sex scenes are hot, but they're written in such a way that makes you feel as if you're there and you're experiencing the passion. When the story ended it was like saying goodbye to old and familiar friends. And she didn't leave the reader with the typical 'happy ending', but in your heart, you could always hope.

      1 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed.......2004-09-28

I am an avid fan of Bertrice Small. In fact I have read 90% of her books. Year after year I look forward to her upcoming published works. Mastering Lady Lucinda is vulgar and crude and not up to her usual standard. Surely there is more than one way to describe intercourse without using the "four letter" word over and over. This book lacks imagination.

For the "conspiracy theorist" in all of us--an eye-opening survey of conspiracies from biblical times to today.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2005-01-27

Mr. Jeffers has written a fascinating book that captures 100 conspiracies stretching from the beginning of time (Adam & Eve) all the way up to more recent ones (Enron, the snipers in DC, etc.) Each encapsulated vignette is highly readable and gives details of the background of each conspiracy, not too much, but enough to whet your appetite to investigate the story further.

Although Jeffers political viewpoint edges his way into the mix (he's obviously a conservative, given his preclusion to disparage Communists, but to either tone down or even dismiss anything that might reflect badly on conservatives and Repubicans), but this does not generally detract from the overall stories much.

It doesn't cover every thing, of course, or the volume would most likely be unmanageable to even pick up, much less read. The author doesn't spend much time with the more esoteric theories that abound among the counterculture (only one piece deals with aliens ["Aliens Among Us"]). given this, its probably not the ideal book for the conspiracy theorists, but for just general knowledge it is worth the price.

With its down and dirty depiction of warfare written by men who know what it’s like to be under fire, the Starfist saga is a runaway success across America. Now, in the explosive new Starfist adventure, packed with fierce action and danger, Marines at war in future space find themselves pitted against a faceless, insatiable foe bent on destroying them. And that’s just for starters.

How bad is the upcoming mission facing the battle-hardened Marines of 34th Fleet Initial Strike Team (FIST), the military’s unofficial alien first-contact force? Bad enough to make the brass take the unprecedented step of issuing 34th FIST replacements for combat losses before the Marines even leave their home base.

In response to a series of unexplained deaths on a lonely outpost on the frontiers of human space, 34th FIST has been dispatched to investigate–and eradicate– the problem. Beyond that, the information available to Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Bass and his men is meager even by Marine standards. No one knows what awaits them, for the newly colonized world remains largely unexplored. That means 34th FIST can expect creatures they have never seen, or even heard of, much less trained for. It could be Skink acid shooters, could be anything, for the barren station has several secrets–all of them deadly.

But the last thing these Marines expect to find is themselves in the middle of an invasion and a mysterious war–with none other than 34th FIST as Enemy #1. Whatever happens, they’ll deal with it, because they’re Marines, determined to be ready . . . and to give worse than they get.

5 out of 5 stars A Must read for Military SF fans.......2007-09-30

Wow. This series has culminated (so far) in the best plot line yet. Not only do the authors give the reader a genuine feel for war, but they also give the reader a professional analysis of current strategies in current wars we could name. Since both are Military vets, their opinions count for much more than pogues whose ideas of strategy originated the term "cluster-fu*k", which is what is going on right now (in real life). A damning accessment, and an accurate one, not to mention an action packed, edge of the seat adventure with our favorate characters, and new ones that deserve what they get. I have every book in this series, and will buy any new ones as soon as they are published, they are really that good! Meanwhile, anyone who is currently overseas must read this whole series! Then Vote!

2 out of 5 stars Boring. Poor writing. Skip it.......2007-04-08

On a whole I really liked the Starfist series but I guess every series has its clunkers, this is one. There are times when reading the series I find that one of the characters figure out part of the plot and they just ignore it in the context of the story. Example is the Skinks don't show up on well Infrared scans. Well, that info just sits around and none of the marines seem to tell any of the other marines that very important info. Leaving them to discover it on there own. Also along that line with the presumed technology why not use ultra violet or some other light wave sensors? This plot point ignorance come to a peak in this tenth installment of the Starfist series. Near the beginning of this story about a quarter the way in they tell you what they suspect might be the cause of the "Skink" like attacks. But the authors have the charters never revisit or do anything about it until much later in the book, even when it is extremely obvious to the read what the cause is. It seems the authors just want us to have blinders on to the plot point they revealed early on in the story and act like the obvious reason should be ignored.
Bottom-line this book was a bore and the only reason to read it is that it continues on the series story line. A very poor effort, poor plot, poor editing. One that you can skip.

4 out of 5 stars And Now for Completely Different..........2005-10-09

It seems like the skinks are back and the men of the 34th will have to face them again so they ship out ready to rock and roll. Things are not, however, as they seem. If I said any more, I'd be giving away vitals so I won't. There is, however, an additional enemy.

We are introduced to Admiral of the Starry Heavens Orange, the supreme naval commander of the We're Here! Navy. We're Here! is a bush league planet settled early on by a bunch of hippies. His supporting characters include Admirals Toke, Head and Crashpad. Captain Happiness is also along for the ride. Admiral Orange gets it into his head that he needs to go to war with another planet and, not incidentally, the Confederation Marines. It's a comic opera that is hilarious in its ludicrous nature.

It's a relaxation break in the series.

2 out of 5 stars It could have been a contender!.......2005-06-06

Overall this series is quite good. As a former Marine, I've found that the authors do a bang-up job of recalling long-forgotten memories of service and sacrifice. They've managed to combine snappy action and plotting with well-realized characters. Characters (such as Charlie Bass) who's fate we deeply care about.

That being said, "A World of Hurt," the tenth and latest in the "Starfist" series is a distinct disappointment. After the last two books in the series, "Kingdom's Fury" and "Lazarus Rising," we had the chance to really get to know several of the main characters: Charlie Bass, Lew Conorado, Brigadier Sturgeon, Cpl. Doyle, etc. They really came alive and of course there was the entire subplot with the supposed death and disappearance of Bass on Kingdom.

This was a major story arc, with the Marines grieving terribly at his "loss." However, his return from the dead is barely mentioned or explored in this novel. His promotion to officer status was similarly glossed over. It would have been quite interesting to have seen the reaction of the Marines to his return, rather than the matter of fact acceptance of his miraculous, "Lazarus" like revival. Or failing that, I would have enjoyed seeing the internal conflicts that Bass experienced as he assumed his new role of officer rather than enlisted man. They were hinted at in some of the throwaway lines in the book but nothing more. The Bass storyline is but one example of many that could have been fleshed out in this book.

Overall, it seems that the authors simply phoned this one in. Especially telling is the excruciating detail with which everyday activities are described. For Heaven's sake! If readers have been with the Marines of the 34th FIST to this point then they don't need to read the line "fast ride on a rough road" one more time. Ugh.

Here's hoping that the next installment serves to advance the overall story rather than serving as a placeholder.

                      2 out of 5 stars Where's the action?.......2005-03-04

This book started well with Gunny Bass returning to the 34th FIST but it trails off from there. There was very little combat and when there was, it was very sporadic.

The dialogue and the innards of the Marine relationships was outstanding as always, but I felt that the perspectives were too diluted. The point of view seemed to come from every single fire team leader, squad leader, platoon leader. It made the whole story, well boring.

I would have given it 3 stars but I've also compared it with the other books in the series and that is why I've dropped it down to 2 stars.

I will continue to read this book because I feel a major conflict brewing between the 34th FIST and the SKINKS.

This book is something everyone should read. It highlights many things all of us have been going through and how to cleanse our spirits and how to break those things in our life that we will not permit because they are not Godly they are of Satan! It teaches us how to reclaim what Jesus has already paid the price in full for each and every one of us and why we should not allow Satan to control any of our thoughts or our ancestrual things that are put upon us. Please read this book if you have things in your life that seem to keep coming back at you! Stop Satan in his tracks and find out the why's and How's of these things in your life or loved ones life! Praise God for Dr. Malones insight on this book! And praise God for anyone directed in reading it. It will change your life just as it has mine!

"You may know the truth but still live out a lie in your daily experience, because knowing something in your mind doesn't necessarily enable you to live it. 'Knowing the truth' is not [a] mental assent to some theological doctrine but rather intimacy with the truth--Jesus Christ. Truth becomes 'at home' in you...therefore if you know the Truth of God, you will be free from lies binding you...Satan is an expert at lies, deceptions and fears, knowing the Truth will allow you to walk victoriously."

                              on the Mahatma Mohandas Gandhi

The simple beauty and timeless wisdom in this fascinating and potent book SHADOW BOXING are as clear, obvious and spiritually nutritious as the convoluted collection of racist mythology, bipolar anti-Semitism and unapologetic witchcraft which accompanies it is spiritually harmful.

His listing of the "Fourteen Root Spirits" that bind a soul otherwise full of joy in the bosom of God to the devil begins with the "Spirit of Infirmity". In it he includes diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, sinus problems and the (somewhat misogynistic) generalization "female problems." Most of these, however, have been linked to the following for decades now: 1) the booming sugar, fast food and tobacco industries and their disease-inducing products, 2) the public relations companies spawned for the express purpose of misinforming the public about the harm those products cause the body, and 3) the congressional lobbyists who see to it that no politician can get elected by pushing laws regulating their distribution for the health and welfare of the country. Yet he never once mentions the spirits of "Lying" and "Whoredoms" ("love of money"; "seduction"; "lust for position"; "placing anyone or anything [like Mammon] before God") serving as the foundation for not just much of our military empire economy, but for all of these multi-billion dollar corporations and the misery they have produced for millions of Christians around the world. Through silence, he becomes complicit with corporate sin.

Dr. Malone speaks of exorcising demons and spirits repeatedly (in, ironcially, the same way African "witch doctors" do it). Interestingly, however, while painting a 19th century missionary's picture of the Godless jungle people of Africa to make unrelated points about curses and spirits, he conveniently never mentions Apartheid; Nelson Mandela; the University of Ghana in Legon; the culturally sophisticated quasi-westernized upper Middle Class (and oil fields) of Nigeria; or the millions of African Christians--including Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Bishop Tutu--who would have serious issues with his entire Christian perspective. He supports through myth and silence a willfully ignorant, simplistic and immoral view of Africa and all of its people that is definitively unGodly.

The word "racism" appears just once in the entire book, unexplained. He does not even repeat it for the index.

The entire histories of Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, (by default) the Enlightenment (which, via the non-Christian Founding Fathers of our nation, produced our Constitution) and all of the scientific and social innovation derived from them all--which we modern Christians both depend on and take for granted--is also flushed down the toilet as demonic for Malone with one phrase: "Eastern religions" ("Spirit of Divination", pg. 126). So embracing the heart of Gandhi (Satyagraha), for example, for how it reflects the heart of Christ (The Golden Rule) is out of the question for him.

Regarding Judaism: Malone essentially says it is right to hate the Jewish people and their religion in your heart, but wrong to express it openly in words (even though the Christ, who quoted an OT psalm while on the cross, never forsook his Jewish origins); for they are (still) the chosen people of God (compare chapter 6 to 8). And while never bothering to make any distinctions between ancient and modern Jews; Aryan/Ashkenazic, Arab and African/Falasha Jews; Israeli and European/American Jews; or the Israeli people and the Israeli military, he never bothers to explain the moral contradictions of his beliefs when they occur--sometimes in the same chapter.

The amount of critical thinking necessary to uncover problems like these throughout this book is minimal. Malone, however, makes "intellectualism" and "false teaching," despite his pursuing and earning what we are led to believe is a Doctorate in Theology, more sins against God (#14: the "Spirit of Error"). Much like the corrupt Popes and Bishops who harassed the father of Protestantism Martin Luther (not to mention Galileo), Malone, it seems, plays the demon card as a pre-emptive strike whenever it suits him politically. I guess he does this in the event anyone would dare "doubt" (see #14 again), question (#14 yet again: "confusion"; "unbelief") or disagree with any aspect of his way of thinking (see #12: spirit of jealousy; "distrustfulness"; "unnatural competition"). In so doing though, he himself "blasphemes the gifts" of genius that are "of the Holy Spirit" when they, like Jesus did, come to us in untraditional, unexpected and uncontrollable ways; "attributing them to Satan." (#8: "Spirit of Antichrist.").

On pages 140 and 141 of chapter 9, Dr. Malone speaks of a woman raised in a family of Satanists. He describes how "satanic plants" would "teach children in the church in such a way that they would believe in a form of Jesus, but never in the true Jesus of the Bible...Therefore they would grow up thinking they were saved, but they were only members of a church, having never been born again." Whether or not Dr. Henry Malone meant to tarnish the wisdom in this book by putting it in a satanic context is irrelevant; that is exactly what SHADOW BOXING does. I learned so much from some of the individual points of this book (hence the three stars), but all true Christians above a seventh grade education must develop the moral courage to reconsider the actual source of his teachings.
