An informative introduction to Tlingit artifacts.......2003-11-17
A superb addition to personal, academic, and community library Native American Studies reference collections, black-and-white as well as color photographs wonderfully illustrate Tlingit: Their Art And Culture, a captivating survey by David Hancock of the Native Americans of Alaska, Yukon and British Columbia. From village life and ceremonies; to the potlatch festivals; to shamanism; to marriage and burial customs; to woodcarving and fabric art forms, Tlingit: Their Art And Culture offers a concise and informative introduction to Tlingit artifacts, nuances, and rituals of Northwestern Native American life and society.

The more you read.. ...the more you love him!!.......2004-05-21
I am too old for comic books but I simply love Garfield. He always manages to bring a smile on my face. Although repetetive at times, Jim Davis does a terrific job each time in presenting Garfield in all his lazy and mischevious glory. This Fat Cat 3-pack is a great value as it has 3 books combined into 1. I think that the paper quality is different from the actual books but who cares!!! I enjoy the books anyways.
The Twelfth Garfield Fat Cat 3 Pack.......2003-03-16
I think Jim Davis out did himself this time! Outragously funny!
I even gat a detention durring reading class from laughing so hard!!!!
Jon Davis strikes again.......2002-08-22
This is one of the funniest garfield books that I have read. Lots of comics with John trying to hook himself up with a date. I think there needs to be more comics of garfield beating up on nermal.
A Handsome Volume Completes This Post-doc's Library.......2001-09-16
Somewhat reminiscent of Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, this massive tome puzzled me for years until Davis' macabre vision of one's relation to oneself finally struck me; that with each abuse of Odie, Garfield moves closer and closer to the pro-active diad that is John and Odie. Eventually the suicide-prone, self-loathing cat which we as a society find quite the jester winds his way through the high road to alienation, much like a Puccini character. The subtle irony of Garfield's monumental epiphany finally places Garfield at the pinnacle of the newly formed triumvirate, and finally, societal acceptance. In this way, Garfield becomes so cynical that he adopts an anti-cynical work ethic in order to preach his intellectual treatise to the masses, thus eventually compromising his own moral barometer in the worst way. Like Icarus, Garfield flies too close to the brilliant heat of personal ulra-rationalism, and winds up destroying himself via his self-enforced taboo of social acceptance. Brilliant.
Really funny and really good!.......2001-08-27
Everything's great in this book! Garfield's new college intern, Biff, Garfield's 20th and 21st birthday, Jon and Garfield's nature hike, Garfield against the scale, Garfield against the goldfish, Garfield against the birds, Garfield against the dogs, when Nermal visits, Jon and Garfield at the diner, when Pooky gets washed, oh, you just gotta read this! I'm sure that it's better than all the other three-packs!

Book Description
Here is the very first book devoted to the work of Chesley Award Winner Rob Alexander, one of the most versatile and highly respected artists today. Alexander's gorgeous watercolors look more like oils or acrylics, and he has a subtle, beautiful, and wonderfully evocative style that works well in a variety of genres. Although his images have appeared in such publications as Amazing Stories and Cricket magazine, he's best known as the painter who creates pictures of sad-eyed women, eerie beings who perch in trees or carve mysterious messages in skulls, hauntingly lovely landscapes, and young children who either discover, imagine, or make wondrous things. All these facets of his art are represented in this breathtaking collection.

Thanks for the invitation, Rob :).......2007-08-04
I first became aware of Rob's work when I came across the (outrageously expensive) fantasy short-story anthology THE LAST CONTINENT: NEW TALES OF ZOTHIQUE (available here at Amazon, too). The gloomy but beautifully depicted ruins and landscape on the cover really left a lasting impression (though the fact that the book was about a dying earth and the misadventures of its inhabitants contributed to the impression as well). The cover art is fully reproduced in full color in the 128-page book reviewed here, as are many pieces originally done for game cards, book illustrations etc. Many if not most of the works are watercolors, and Rob's favorite themes include ancient, deserted ruins, grand but vacant landscapes, or a combination of the two. Also often found are depictions of dark and sinister abodes such as forests and caves. People and humanoid creatures sometimes appear, but are often alone in the pictures and rarely seem happy.
While the extremely well-reproduced pictures are often first-rate in quality with their vision and attention to detail, there is a certain gloomy, oppressive pall that weighs on the overall contents of the book. It feels dark and heavy. The worlds depicted in the pics often feel disquietingly quiet (pun intended). One wonders if a certain pessimistic outlook on life -- the vanity and impermanence of all things, as seen in those deserted ruins -- might have been expressed through the paintings. Rob really should do some pieces for Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos; indeed it's something of a surprise to me that he hasn't done so yet (unless I missed something), given the style of his work.
Interestingly, Rob is attracted to East Asian culture, and this shows in some of the pieces. One of them, a very wide pic entitled 'Ancient Places', was supposed to depict what sorts of dwellings he imagined Japanese elves would have!
Overall, the artwork showcased in this volume is great, but I would have preferred that Rob did some HAPPY pictures as well, with brighter, less somber colors and more activity and excitement. Bring a little more sunshine and laughter into your worlds in future, Rob. :)
Book Description
The world of Thurber is splendidly sampled in these thirty stories, sketches, and articles that range from the wildest comedy to the serious business of murder. Animal courtship, maids, Macbeth, baseball, sailing, marriage-all fall within Thurber’s scope. Drawings by the Author.
Customer Reviews:
Very fun to read Thurber.......2007-09-18
Thurber is always fun and funny to read. Thurber fans need to add this book to their collections.
A Minor Collection by a Great American Humorist.......2002-07-21
James Thurber is justly famous as one of 20th Century America's most astute humourists--but MY WORLD AND WELCOME TO IT does not really display the author to his best advantage. Even so, it does contain a few gems that make purchase of this title necessary to Thurber fans.
The showpiece of this collection is the famous but somewhat over-rated "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," but MY WORLD also includes a number of seldom anthologized pieces that show Thurber's wit at a high-water mark, including "The Whip-Poor-Will," "A Friend to Alexander," and "The MacBeth Murder Mystery." It also includes several examples of Thurber's acid perspective on the battle of the sexes, such as "Death in the Zoo," and several memorable examples of his ability to wring laughter from the perfidies of language, such as "What Do You Mean, It 'Was' Brilling?" and "Here Lies Miss Gorby."
But the bulk of MY WORLD consists of much less focused material that Thurber casually produced for THE NEW YORKER--pieces which are mildly humorous examinations of everything from French guidebooks to 19th century copies of the English magazine PUNCH. Thurber's clever prose lends such pieces considerable charm, but they are decidedly minor works when compaired with the side-splitting classics found in other collections. Thurber fans, of course, will be delighted by most of it, but newcomers would likely be happier with such collections as A THURBER CARNIVAL.
Constant Companion.......2000-04-07
This collection of short essays and stories is marvellous. I have carried it with me on every trip I have taken since I first read it. I have my grandfather's copy, which has been on a longtime loan (say, ten years...) I am fondest of the essays, which range from clever little tirades against the Telephone Company and the Motor Vehicle Bureau to accounts and commentaries on Thurber's travels in France and Italy. It is really a wonderful wonderful book, very funny and acute. Please read it.
