Set primarily in a rustic fishing camp on the northern tip of Maine, the first 50 pages of Justin Cronin's The Summer Guest read like a lazy fishing expedition--most of the time is simply spent waiting for something to happen. Thankfully, this expansive family saga goes on to explore countless intriguing topics, including love, war, disease, loss, betrayal, and redemption. The book revolves around the story of Harry Wainwright, a wealthy entrepreneur who falls in love with the camp as a young man and returns decades later for one last day of fishing before he succumbs to terminal cancer. With Harry as a centerpiece, Cronin artfully weaves the tales of Joe and Lucy Crosby, the camp's owners; their daughter Kate; and Jordan, the camp's guide; into a complex web of family drama. Using history as both a backdrop and a main character, Cronin guides readers from World War II to Vietnam, with the story reaching its climax on a late summer day in 1994.

The beauty of The Summer Guest lies in Cronin's ability to create meaning in each character's situation. Whether dodging the draft on a fishing boat in rural Canada, serving up clams by the Boston Harbor, saying goodbye to a loved one, or finding new love where you were once afraid to look, Cronin creates deep, sincere characters with whom readers feel a powerful sense of investment. ("Here is grief, I thought, here is grief at last: the full measure and heft of it... I watched myself enter it as if I were stepping into a pool of the calmest, darkest waters... a feeling like happiness, everything drifting away…") This ability to make what at first may seem like a quiet day of fishing seem extraordinary is what sets Cronin apart from other novelists, and what makes a story of the everyday business of living, loving and dying seem somewhat extraordinary. --Gisele Toueg

Book Description

Winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for his radiant novel in stories, Mary and O’Neil, Justin Cronin has already been hailed as a writer of astonishing gifts. Now Cronin’s new novel, The Summer Guest, fulfills that promise—and more. With a rare combination of emotional insight, narrative power, and lyrical grace, Cronin transforms the simple story of a dying man’s last wish into a rich tapestry of family love.

On an evening in late summer, the great financier Harry Wainwright, nearing the end of his life, arrives at a rustic fishing camp in a remote area of Maine. He comes bearing two things: his wish for a day of fishing in a place that has brought him solace for thirty years, and an astonishing bequest that will forever change the lives of those around him.

From the battlefields of Italy to the turbulence of the Vietnam era, to the private battles of love and family, The Summer Guest reveals the full history of this final pilgrimage and its meaning for four people: Jordan Patterson, the haunted young man who will guide Harry on his last voyage out; the camp’s owner Joe Crosby, a Vietnam draft evader who has spent a lifetime “trying to learn what it means to be brave”; Joe’s wife, Lucy, the woman Harry has loved for three decades; and Joe and Lucy’s daughter Kate—the spirited young woman who holds the key to the last unopened door to the past.

As their stories unfold, secrets are revealed, courage is tested, and the bonds of love are strengthened. And always center stage is the place itself—a magical, forgotten corner of New England where the longings of the human heart are mirrored in the wild beauty of the landscape.

Intimate, powerful, and profound, The Summer Guest reveals Justin Cronin as a storyteller of unique and marvelous talent. It is a book to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars This is just a wonderful book........2007-09-19

Reading is one of my greatest pleasures and a friend who knows this gave me "The Summer Guest". I was not familiar with the author and didn't know anything about the book before I began. I have since recommended this book to all of my friends. It is truly one of the best books I've read and I am a voracious reader. The language is absolutely beautiful and the characterizations are wonderful. It is a book to savor and, although I rarely reread books, I will definitely read this one again.

John Citron's review from March 24, 2006 says it all. If you are in doubt about whether to purchase "The Summer Guest", do it anyway. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book........2007-04-04

Really ... absolutely wonderful. Captivating. I couldn't stop reading and I was very sorry when it was over. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Cronin.

5 out of 5 stars Many summers, many guests.......2007-03-25

Justin Cronin writes beutifully! He weaves characters, their stories, big life questions, and time into something
larger than the norm, leaving this reader pondering my own life, family and sense of place. Cronin's Mary and O'Neill was rich, too. Bits of metaphor and vividness in both.

5 out of 5 stars Luminous Prose..........2006-08-08

Justin Cronin has written an exceptionally beautiful novel- filled with scenes and characterizations that seem real to the touch. Even if you have not lived in the Adirondack mountains of New York state as I have, the summers of deep woods and deep lakes come alive on the pages. The story of lives and losses is tenderly recounted...luminous prose.

5 out of 5 stars This is a rare gem!.......2006-04-05

I have told almost everyone I know to read this book! It is magnificently written. There is a truly memorable page in the book that made me cry as Mr. Cronin describes "man's best friend." I really loved that he told the story from the various characters point of view. I didn't want the book to end and have been hoping that Mr. Cronin will have a new book out by 2007. I am glad that he doesn't churn out books 3 times a year, it makes it that much more special when his next one comes and that we all have something to look forward to.

Book Description

This signature book captures the flavor of the "Borscht Belt," that fabled vacation area just "ninety minutes from Broadway." Summer romances, mambo time, menus with seven kinds of herring, musical and comedic greats getting their start, bungalows, and big hotels like Grossinger’s—all come back in a rush. Through the power of oral history, more than a hundred voices share stories that span nearly a century—recalling an experience that exists now only in memory.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging Book Is Nearly As Fun As The Era It Celebrates.......2003-07-04

While working at the Nevele Country Club, one of the many legendary Catskill resorts covered in this magnificent document, I briefly met Myrna and Harvey Frommer while doing their research. They probably don't remember me, I was too young at the time to offer the kind of history they were looking for, but the pair's enthusiasm and obvious love for the area's resorts and their unique (now long gone) familial atmosphere was readily apparent. When I finally got to read this book, it provided me with a sense of pride for being a part of its history. There's even an ancient picture of my father playing sax in the old Art Kahn Orchestra! But aside from personal connections, this book stands as a definitive oral history of an era. The people interviewed are true insiders, some of them legends in their own right among Catskill lore. And while the book provides some deep sociological perspective concerning its ethnic background, the authors know how to balance this with charming, amazing and often sidesplitting anecdotes. If you ever spent a weekend at Grossinger's, The Concord, The Nevele or one of the dozens of small bungalow colonies, this book will wash you in warm memories. And if you didn't have the chance, it will make you wish you did.

                    Book Description

In the far future, the Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack find a world on which fiction has been outlawed. A world where it's a crime to tell stories, a crime to lie, a crime to hope, and a crime to dream. But now somebody is challenging the status quo. A pirate TV station urges people to fight back, and the Doctor wants to help - until he sees how easily dreams can turn into nightmares. With one of his companions stalked by shadows and the other committed to an asylum, the Doctor is forced to admit that fiction can be dangerous after all. Though perhaps it is not as deadly as the truth...

I have already read this book twice. That it has Captain Jack in it is a big plus. (How could you not like him?) Steve Lyons does a good job of depicting the Doctor and Rose. It's like watching the show, only better because you can take the book with you.

                    4 out of 5 stars "Was I Clever?".......2006-06-27

The Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack find themselves on a planet where the human race has skidded backward. Technology is sluggish, development happens on the same space over and over again, and the media force-feeds the population a repetetive diet of trivia. But most puzzling, all forms of fiction--including storytelling, lying, and dreaming--are strictly forbidden. Anyone caught telling a tall tale winds up in a place of nightmares, the Big White House.

Steve Lyons has created a beautifully complex story that makes you want to keep reading to figure out what's going on and why. He also masterfully separates the principal characters in coinciding adventures, but does a beautiful job keeping all his cards in play. This novel takes on an adventure with an epic scope and complexity far beyond what a sixty-minute TV episode can encompass. And it is no small praise with such established characters to say that, in savvying the dialogue, the reader can actually hear the actors who play these characters speaking.

And may I add, please, that the hardback binding makes holding the book more of a sensory treasure? It underlines the solidity of the story and the mass of the thought underlying the book.

This book isn't without its problems. The author has a tendency to tell parts of the story in flashback--not parts out of the distant past, but bits of business and exposition, presumably as a trick to make sure every chapter begins and ends with action. And there is a certain unremitting urgency to the pace of the story. The author would have been well-advised to write in a moment where the characters stop to catch their breath and think over what happened, because if the characters don't have such a chance, neither does the reader.

But these are quibbles. Sure, the book is imperfect, but it is still very, very good. The characters are well played, the situation is gripping, the puzzle is thought-provoking, and the payoff is tasty. This book will be well-loved by casual fans and die-hard devotees alike, and it makes an excellent addition to the Doctor Who corpus.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Clever Puzzle.......2006-05-17

"Stealers of Dreams" is a clever puzzle. Without spoiling the plot, let me just say that you'll enjoy reading this book twice--once to gather the pieces of the puzzle, and the second time through in light of the solution.

Steve Lyons has not only written a clever puzzle, but he has also captured the special dynamic of the relationship between the Doctor and Rose in the ninth series. Captain Jack is also in character and in his element.

Although the book is a quick read, Steve Lyons has managed to write a book that transcends the age groups of Dr Who fans. Adult fans will be relieved that "Stealers" doesn't read like a young adult novel, and yet the book is appropriate for young fans.

                    Highly recommended.

                        Book Description

Joanne Walker has three days to learn to use her shamanic powers and save the world from the unleashed Wild Hunt.

No worries. No pressure. Nevermind the lack of sleep, the perplexing new talent for healing from fatal wounds, or the cryptic, talking coyote who appears in her dreams.

And if all that's not bad enough, in the three years Joanne's been a cop, she's never seen a dead body -- but she's just come across her second in three days.

It's been a bitch of a week. And it isn't over yet.

Got this in the mail yesterday and started reading. Darn near finished it in one read. This is really well done and sucks you in from the first paragraph. Don't you just love a woman with a smart mouth?

                        4 out of 5 stars Unique read.......2007-08-23

I found C.E. Murphy's Urban Shaman to be quite unique. Joanne Walker AKA Siobhan Walkingstick is heading home after her mother's funeral. She sees a woman being chased by a pack of dogs towards a man with a knife. Despite jet lag and the fact that she'll most likely be fired from her job as a mechanic in the Seattle police department, she hops into a cab and races out to rescue the woman.

I wasn't sure I was going to like the story at first, but it grew on me. I liked the fact that her heroine isn't some overly beautiful petite woman. Joanne is a tall, not skinny lady and seems like a regular person. She just doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut. The cab driver, Gary, becomes her sidekick in this adventure. They have a wonderful banter back and forth as he can see her inner beauty even if she can't. The possible romantic tension between Joanne and her boss is realistically handled.

The book fuses Celtic and American Indian mythologies competently without being preachy. I've added her next two books to my wish list.

This series was alright. I think that it was a little to much and overboard sometimes. I did like the concept, but was a little to much to take. I have read all three of the books, and again it was alright.

4 out of 5 stars Action And Drama.......2007-07-16

Action-packed with a really fun heroine. I've never read a book quite like this and I enjoyed it very much. My only complaint is that sometimes the metaphysical battles were a little hard to follow. All around great read though!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful little book.......2007-08-02

This is an amazing little book by an amazing man. I found much in it that felt utterly familiar, and many new wonderful things which I'm pondering, trying, and incorporating into my daily shamanic practices. Some of them I'd already been doing, or had been heading that direction anyway. The teachings and methods described here go hand in hand with much Celtic shamanic practices and teachings that I've been reading elsewhere. Subtle, and an alternative to improperly coopting Native American spirituality practices.

5 out of 5 stars Urban Shaman Works.......2007-07-14

Urban Shaman is a great book with a lot of very interesting, effective techniques. I have applied several of the techniques contained within this book to my life and have been surprised at just how truly effective this stuff is.

The seven laws as taught in this book as well as some of the exercises are very useful to know...and very effective when used.

Anyone can take something useful from this book if they actually apply the techniques before judging their worth. This book is a definite must read for anyone who is interested in a spiritual approach to improving their life.

4 out of 5 stars The world is what you think it is.......2005-09-10

The author is a shaman and huna philosopher.

Huna is an ancient philosophy going back 2,000 years, and contains many self realization techniques, including the unification of the three selves, removing emotional blocks and fears, and manifesting your goals. There is also an energy practice which uses the power of focus.

This book goes through the 7 rules of the Huna Philosophy, explaining them in some detail. It is an ancient belief system, and also an amazing self improvement system which I wholeheartedly recommend.

The world is what you think it is i.e there is no reality only perception. There are no limits. Energy flows where attention goes are three of the rules.

There are many self help books out there which focus on individual concepts, which seem new, yet are all contained within this philosophy, which is over 2,000 years old. I am thinking of books such as the Power of Intention, and the Power of Now, Unlimited power.

In addition the concepts of the conscious, subconscious, and superconscious or universal mind, have been around for thousands of years, yet only since the early 1900s with the writings of those such as Carl Jung have these ideas become more widely accepted.

This philosophy does enable you to combine your three selves, and clear emotional blocks and limiting beliefs for improved effectiveness.

There are excellent healing practices and visualizations within this book. Many of our illnesses spring from our unresolved emotions, whereas much of western medicine treats the symptom not the cause. I believe energy practice is very important for focus, as energy flows where attention goes.

Many other philosophies share common roots with this one. One of the main differences is this a can do not a can't do philosophy. To use one of the beliefs, there are no limits. If you buy this book your journey is only beginning because you will want to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my Life.......2004-09-28

I have to give this book five stars because it is not loaded with down to earth practical exercises but because it had one bit about "instant healing", which I have labelled "it never happened" technique and which came very hand when half of my face became paralyzed and when doctors told me that I'll just have to accept it and that it may even get worse over time. The paralysis was bad enough that I couldn't even speak coherently (I'd have to hold my lips with my hand in order to make an understandable sound), nor could I eat properly due to lack of sensation and because I couldn't move the muscles of my mouth. It was simply unacceptable to me to live like that, so I remember the technique from this book. I also got Serge Kahili King's video "Instant Healing".

I have adapted that "it never happened" techniques with NLP Time-Line technique and spend few days running the new pattern in my mind re-living my life from before the event until the present moment as if my face was always normal and it never became paralyzed. It was not INSTANT healing - but it took ONLY FEW DAYS for my face to become completely normal and to function perfectly. My friend said that that he was utterly amazed as he watched the transformation on my face returning to normal - he said it was just like witnessing a miracle. Yeah, our minds are truly miraculous.

                        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2004-01-21

This is an extremely well written book full of excellent material and techniques. I cannot recommend it enough! Easy to read, but thorough in covering the subjects. I found it a joy to read.

This woman has helped me before and today reviewing her work she has helped me all over again. I hadn't looked at this book in years 'til today...wanting to review a book for you all I traced my finger over a shelf and this book called to me. When i was pouring over things she taught me about myself and about fathers and mothers and how the body lives a life of it's own and is sometimes left without nurture...how long since you had a great massage? me...forever it seems.

This book is about our relationship to life and self and other. It is about Gabrielle finding her wings, and about teaching dance to people in halfway houses and in mental institutions,as well as Americas royalty...movie stars and the like and to so many others. It is exploration and it is warm. She guides us through some very theraputic exercises (mental) that urge on our healing from the past,if your family dynamic was (like so many of us) not quite ideal, then you may find a lot of help in this wonderful book. Dance is not a qualifyer...but she may cause you to want to...dance. Or to just let your spirit soar.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Rich Tapestry.......2003-04-06

Reading this book was something like a dance. I moved in readily to embrace her passionate stories and images of dancing, recognizing the value that dance can have for me in letting my body express how it feels. Then, I found myself withdrawing, as Roth began telling me how to experience the world, what labels and definitions to apply to my emotional experience and how I should go about knowing myself. Yet, I was drawn toward her again to discover many pearls of wisdom embedded in the passages of this book. Overall, this book was for me a rich tapestry of life experience and collected wisdom which encouraged and stimulated me to reflect on my relationship with my body and my own psychological reality.

Roth's most vital message, in my judgment, is of the body's role in coming into relationship with the unconscious. Most depth psychologists emphasize the intra-psychic realm, the work to be done within the psyche to develop a strong connection between the ego and the Self. Yet, here is a person whose way of individuation is through the body and she contributes her awareness of this path with great passion and energy. For people who exist at some distance from their bodies, Roth's stories and descriptions of dancing into relationship are food for renewal.

                        Book Description

The work of Amazon folk healer don Hilde incorporates a modern spiritualistic perspective into the traditional healing arts of the region. Medical anthropologist Marlene Dobkin De Rios examines don Hilde's methods in relation to folk tradition and modern research on the immune system. She finds that many traditional techniques stimulate the production of endorphins-natural painkillers that stimulate the body's own healing powers.

Slim volume (164 pp.) about a healer in Pucallpa, Peru. Actually he is her father-in-law. Not terrific, since she reports on all this psychic healing at face value, without really tieing it to any substantive facts. These people all believe in witches and evil causing them bodily harm as a way of pushing off the problem to somebody else, much as we are so prone to lawsuits. I do think there is a definite connection between mental soundness and physical well-being. These Peruvians seem to view the world they live in as full of evil witches and people who wish them harm. Does jungle living make people so paranoid? There probably is something in psychic energy being able to heal, and people's auras telling of their illnesses; but this author does not really have enough empirical data.

                                    Product Description

Maps to Ecstasy initiates us into the five sacred rhythms inherent in all our actions and illuminates the five life cycles that lead us to enlightenment. We awaken our latent shamanic powers as we reconnect to primal knowledge through exercises, dance, song, poetry, meditation, theater, and ritual discovering how shamanic principles can be incorporated here and now in our contemporary, urban lives. Gabrielle Roth shows us how to turn our lives into art and how to discover the dancer, singer, poet, actor, and healer within.
