Ahdaf Soueif's The Map of Love is a massive family saga, a story that draws its readers into two moments in the complex, troubled history of modern Egypt. The story begins in 1977 in New York. There Isabel Parkman discovers an old trunk full of documents--some in English, some in Arabic--in her dying mother's apartment. Incapable of deciphering this stash by herself, she turns to Omar al-Ghamrawi, a man with whom she is falling in love. And Omar directs her in turn to his sister Amal in Cairo.

Together the two women begin to uncover the stories embedded in the journal of Lady Anna Winterbourne, who traveled to Egypt in 1900 and fell in love with Sharif Pasha al-Barudi, an Egyptian nationalist. To their surprise, they stumble across some unsuspected connections between their own families. Less surprising, perhaps, is the persistence of the very same issues that dogged their ancestors: colonialism, Egyptian nationalism, and the clash of cultures throughout the Middle East. The past, however, does offer some semblance of omniscience:

That is the beauty of the past; there it lies on the table: journals, pictures, a candle-glass, a few books of history. You leave it and come back to it and it waits for you--unchanged. You can turn back the pages, look again at the beginning. You can leaf forward and know the end. And you tell the story that they, the people who lived it, could only tell in part.
With its multiple narratives and ever-shifting perspectives, The Map of Love would seem to cast some doubt on even the most confident historian's version of events. Yet this subtle and reflective tale of love does suggest that the relations between individuals can (sometimes) make a difference. "I am in an English autumn in 1897," Amal confesses at one point, "and Anna's troubled heart lies open before me." Here, perhaps, is a hint about how we should read Soueif's staggering novel, using words as a means to travel through time, space, and identity. --Vicky Lebeau

Book Description

Booker Prize Finalist

"Sweeping and evocative--. An unconventional love story."--The Times (London)

With her first novel, In the Eye of the Sun, Ahdaf Soueif garnered comparisons to Tolstoy, Flaubert, and George Eliot.  In her latest novel, which was shortlisted for Britain's prestigious Booker Prize, she combines the romantic skill of the nineteenth-century novelists with a very modern sense of culture and politics--both sexual and international.

At either end of the twentieth century, two women fall in love with men outside their familiar worlds. In 1901, Anna Winterbourne, recently widowed, leaves England for Egypt, an outpost of the Empire roiling with nationalist sentiment. Far from the comfort of the British colony, she finds herself enraptured by the real Egypt and in love with Sharif Pasha al-Baroudi. Nearly a hundred years later, Isabel Parkman, a divorced American journalist and descendant of Anna and Sharif has fallen in love with Omar al-Ghamrawi, a gifted and difficult Egyptian-American conductor with his own passionate politics. In an attempt to understand her conflicting emotions and to discover the truth behind her heritage, Isabel, too, travels to Egypt, and enlists Omar's sister's help in unravelling the story of Anna and Sharif's love.

Joining the romance and intricate storytelling of A.S. Byatt's Possession and Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient, Ahdaf Soueif has once again created a mesmerizing tale of genuine eloquence and lasting importance.

5 out of 5 stars Old and modern - a love story with a difference.......2007-03-17

the most wonderful book I have ever read. Every page will keep you captivated. Old and new - only towards the end of the novel do the threads come together and what a climax. It will break your heart but don't be worried, the book as a whole and the personal stories therin will also fill your heart with joy!

2 out of 5 stars J.P. Balogh.......2007-02-10

Less would have been more. I am one of those readers, who does not believe that the more complex the story, the more worth it is. The idea for this novel is excellent and it could have been a remarkable book, but it is not. The intent of the author is obvious (too obvious), but not quite convincing. Anna's diary, quaint and very much late 19th century, saves the novel from becoming a tedious harangue. My initial interest flagged after a while, and I found myself skipping pages until I came to a secion in italics.

5 out of 5 stars The personal is political . . ........2007-01-29

A finalist for the Booker Prize when it was published in 1999, this novel of love and international politics set in Egypt is also a rich and rewarding mix of postmodern, post-colonial, and Victorian-era storytelling. In the scale of its romantic ambitions, it reminded me often of "The English Patient," and it cries out for a similar film adaptation to bring it visually to life. Soueif evokes several imaginative worlds, ranging from the Sinai deserts of a century ago to modern-day Cairo. Narrated from the point of view of its women characters, her story explores the relationship between the politically driven affairs of men and the sanctuary of home and hearth where women and children live their lives. Thus the story traces both the struggle for power and the strongest urges of the heart, a compelling combination.

Told mostly in the form of fragments of text - journal entries and letters - the narrative harks back to the 18th-century epistolary novel. We also get multiple narrators, mostly filtered through the perspective of its central character, a middle-aged woman living in Cairo in the late 1990s. The story she tells takes place in the years before WWI and concerns a love affair between an English widow and a wealthy, influential Egyptian man, who is 16 years older, all of it set against the British occupation of Egypt and the impact of European colonialism on a nation with thousands of years of culture and history. As the novel shifts to the present, it describes the modern-day aftermath of that period of history in the continuing interference of the West in the Middle East and the growth of Islamist and secular extremism that has emerged in response to it. Meanwhile, the domestic world of women, bound in its traditions of caring for home and children, continues to guide their energies and concerns and provides sanctuary from the political strife that surges around them.

Written in English by an Egyptian-born writer, this intricately plotted novel is set in the present and deeply immersed in the past. It is both a history lesson and a heart-racing romance that walks the fine line between an "orientalist" perspective and an attitude that represents Egyptians and their culture from their own point of view. For example, through discussions of early Jewish settlements in Palestine, the reader gets an Egyptian perspective of historical developments that were to lead to the creation of the state of Israel a half century later. A glossary at the back of the book helps with reading through sections of the novel that incorporate Arabic expressions, idioms, and historical references. Plan on taking a while to read this book - unless you intend to skip over the more demanding parts. It evokes a time and a world that is only somewhat familiar, given what we know of it from film and the media, and the book's richness of detail calls for a slower more attentive pace.

2 out of 5 stars A fantastic idea, poorly executed.......2007-01-09

What a great idea for a novel - take two interesting, connected periods of tumult in Egyptian history, and compare them using a sweeping family saga of journals and personal relationships. Sounds interesting, right? The whole thing comes across as an unwieldly mess, unfortunately. I found myself trying really hard not to skip the "modern" passages, as they are the least interesting - and I am one who always reads cover to cover. The journals are probably the best (italics), as they are more focused and limited in scope. There are better books out there.

1 out of 5 stars Anna's journal was the only things that kept me reading!.......2006-11-30

I had a hard time getting through this book. It just never caught my interest. Half way through the book I ended up skipping the modern dialogue to read Anna's journal. That was easy since those parts were italicised. The arabic wasn't difficult for me because I have tourist knowledge of phrases/words. Anyone that doesn't might find it hard to get through those parts. It just wasn't a book I enjoyed very much or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for that kind of book!

In the future, in a place called Satelite City, fourteen-year-old Cosmo Hill enters the world, unwanted by his parents. He's sent to the Clarissa Frayne Institute for Parentally Challenged Boys, Freight class. At Clarissa Frayne, the boys are put to work by the state, testing highly dangerous products. At the end of most days, they are covered with burns, bruises, and sores. Cosmo realizes that if he doesn't escape, he will die at this so-called orphanage. When the moment finally comes, Cosmo seizes his chance and breaks out with the help of the Supernaturalists, a motley crew of kids who all have the same special ability as Cosmo-they can see supernatural Parasites, creatures that feed on the life force of humans. The Supernaturalists patrol the city at night, hunting the Parasites in hopes of saving what's left of humanity in Satellite City. Or so they think. The Supernaturalist soon find themselves caught in a web far more complicated than they'd imagined, when they discover a horrifying secret that will force them to question everything they believe in. Eoin Colfer has created an eerie and captivating world-part Blade Runner, part futuristic Dickens-replete with non-stop action

1 out of 5 stars Not convincing and the Physics suck badly.......2007-09-22

This pretends to be SF. But it is really fantasy. The author describes a highly technical society that does not respect the individual. However Colfer either does have no clue about physics and technology, or he does not care. This is perfectly acceptable in fantasy, but not in something that pretends to be realistic. It does screw up the readers sense of how physical reality works. It also happens so often that it really breaks the mood frequently.

Add to that that the story is not very interesting, the characters are flat and the plot is chaotic. I think reading this book is a waste of time at best.

5 out of 5 stars One of my faves.......2007-05-21

                4 out of 5 stars School Reveiw.......2007-05-18

Cosmo spent his whole life looking for a way out of the Clarissa Frayne Institute, when his life was much simpler inside. Cosmo was running for his life as he escaped from Clarissa Frayne. While he was running on a rooftop he falls and almost dies. This is when he meets the Supernaturalists. Stephen, Mona and Ditto are a group that fights supernatural creatures. They call the creatures parasites that they believe suck the life force out of people. Only people with near death experiences can see the parasites. Now that Cosmo can see them too, he's on the Supernaturalist team. The group goes around shooting parasites with lighting rods, making them explode. Things are going great until Myshi Corporation gets involved. Ellen Faustino tells Stephen that they found a way to kill off a huge number of parasites. It was an energy pulse that would kill parasites but not hurt humans. All Stephen would have to do is set it off where the parasites lived, which they found out was right under Clarissa Frayne. The Supernaturalist team also found out that the parasites weren't killed by the lightning rods, and that the energy pulse was the only way to do it. Cosmo and Stephen were able to set off the energy pulse, killing hundreds of parasites. Their mission was a success. That night, the Supernaturalists were captured by people from Myshi. They were taken to see Faustino. There, they found out her real plan. The Satellite was falling apart and needed to be replaced. She was going to use the parasite's energy with a nuclear reactor, which was illegal, to power the city. The energy pulse had only knocked the parasites out so Myshi could collect them. The last thing that they found out was that everyone was wrong about the parasites. They didn't suck life force, they sucked out pain. They were natures way of easing people's suffering. Faustino ordered for the Supernaturalists to be killed as she worked on the reactor. Luckily, they escaped. When they tried to stop Faustino, Stephen was shot. With the help of his friends, he was able to free the parasites and destroy the reactor, and then he died. The Supernaturalists could return to fighting supernatural creatures, only to discover there were some more dangerous than parasites The Supernaturalist bye Eoin Colfer is a very good book. It can be a bit confusing at times like all science fiction books, but overall it was very interesting.
It was really cool to see the authors views of what the planet will be like in the future. The author works in issues that he thinks the planet will face. For example, the smog that is always hanging over the city. The different chemicals from the city turn the fog different colors. The color determines whether you can go outside or not. No one can go out if the smog is red. Another issue comes up when Stephen is talking to Cosmo. He says "No one goes outside for long with the ozone layer stretched thinner than cellophane." Or when Mona is in Booshka, thinking she's going to die. She thinks to herself that it was to dangerous and that after they got out she would quit being a Supernaturalist. She says that she might become a deep sea diver, if there is any water left that wouldn't bleach her skin.

Since this is a science fiction book, it had a lot of futuristic technology. For example all the stuff they use to save Cosmo after he fell off the roof. They put a steel plate in his head that was a strong as an assault tank. They told him he should be able to head bud his way through a brick wall. He also had a knee replacement that tells him when he needs to rest. The cellophane slugs were really cool too. If you get shot with one, you get covered in cellophane. It gets really tight so you can't move. It's really affective for police. The biggest technological thing in the book was the Satellite. It powers the entire city. Nobody drives their car manually; they send a signal to the Satellite which then guides the car. The city would be lost without it.

This book at a lot of humor in it, that's part of what made it interesting. One funny part is when Stephen and Ditto were trying to get the cellophane off of Mona. The cellophane has a sedative that makes it so you can't think straight. She woke up screaming "No mom, no way am I wearing those dresses!" Stephen told her where she was and she just looked at him saying "No dresses, okay." Another funny part was when the Supernaturalists were in a rocket heading for the satellite. Ditto, due to a birth defect, is twenty eight and still looks like a six year old. On the way to the satellite, Ditto had to sit on Stephen's lap. He was complaining that he hates to being a kid and that this was the worst thing his condition had forced him to endure. Stephen's only reply was "There, there little fellow. Shall I tell you a story?" At the end of the book, Mona and Cosmo kind of admit that they have feelings for each other. Ditto walks into the room to see them kissing. He starts complaining that he better not have to watch them make doe eyes at each other on their missions. Mona and Cosmo just laugh.

This is a great book. It is original and very interesting. It has many plot twists that make you not want to put it down. I would recommend it to all teenagers.

Fortunately, he joins the Supernaturalists, a motley crew of kids who share the coincident ability as Cosmo does-they can see Supernatural Parasites, creatures that feed on the life force of humans.

The 'Supernatural gang' patrol the city at night, hunting and extirpating the parasites; in hopes of saving what is left of humanity in Satellite City. That's what they think. The Supernaturalists soon find themselves caught up in a web far more perplexed than they had imagined. Soon they discover a terrifying secret that will compel them to question everything they believe in.

Colfer has manufactured a totally fangled world with nonstop action, jocularity and a diversity of characters. [...].

Though not as good as the rest of Colfer's books, this is certainly worth the read and there are some interesting ideas in it. It is more serious than the Artemis Fowl books on the whole, but it is quite funny at times.

5 out of 5 stars this was a very good book.......2005-12-01

after i read this book i actually was really mad that i finished it, its just that good. The book is about a kid named Cosmo Hill and he is a no sponser child wich basicly means hes an orphan. But then he escapes and joins a gang of oh kids in a fight to destroy these blue monsters that only they can see. But these monsters suk the life out of people.

5 out of 5 stars A short description of this book by Eoin Colfer Written by Tim O'Sullivan.......2005-11-08

This is a fantastical action book, set in a city above Earth, about a life of a boy who's a no-sponser and he escapes the orphanage and becomes a hero.
The main character is called Cosmo Hill, he is skinny and tall with nice black hair. The characters are quite realistic but it's quite blurred because you can't propely tell how the author thought the people were like.
The characters are stock but with a few exeptions. The characters are cool but their life is low tech with no gadgets.
This book does have or you could say includes : gangs, friendship, fight for survival and so on. This book told me how mad life can be (you'll see when you read the book).
                          I highly recommend this book.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a handy collection of highlights from the Dalai Lama's writings and teachings? Renuka Singh, a student and friend of the Dalai Lama, brings together a sampling of his words for each day of the year in The Path to Tranquility. In her selections you can sense the intimate encouragement of the student-teacher relationship. The Dalai Lama's words are not distant platitudes or profound proclamations but rather small insights and patient exhortations to keep trying. "We can deny everything except that we have the possibility of being better." "As a spiritual trainee, you must be prepared to endure the hardships of being involved in a genuine spiritual pursuit." "Nothing is more important than guarding the mind." These thoughts are germane to practical cultivation, and pondering a daily passage is a great way to keep the mind coming back to its center. Take a page from the Dalai Lama, and set yourself on the path to tranquility. --Brian Bruya

The daily wisdoms of the Dalai Lama have inspired me each morning . The last thing I do before heading out the door is read my wisdom for the day. It has inspired me, made me think before I act and, most important, made me think about how and why others act. This is the first book by the Dalai Lama I have owned. I am so inspired by it that I have given it as gifts to my friends. His Holiness has such insight and is an inspiration to read. I reccommend this book to everyone, religous or not, as I believe we all need a positive thought to begin our day.
