In this incredibly fast-paced thriller, a conspiracy hatched close to the Oval Office results in the kidnapping of the president and the slaughter of a company of Secret Service agents commanded by ex-Navy SEAL Scot Harvath. The story careers from the ski slopes of Utah to the top of Switzerland's Mount Pilatus and sets Scot on an impossible mission: recover the president, evade renegade Swiss spy Gerhard Miner and his cadre of trained agents, and elude the American conspirators who are hot on his trail. Framed for murder, his reputation in tatters, his former colleagues turned against him, Harvath finds an unlikely ally in a beautiful Swiss prosecutor who's been checkmated by Miner once too often. Together they play a high-stakes game of mixed "doubles" to save the president and uncover the conspiracy. Brad Thor's debut novel is a tightly wound spy tale that makes up in excitement what it lacks in subtlety and character development. Ludlum fans will love it. --Jane Adams

"In a daring and chilling debut, Brad Thor draws us into a sinister labyrinth of political intrigue and international terrorism, serving up an explosive cocktail of unrelenting action -- and a shattering climax -- as one man is pushed to the edge. On the snow-covered slopes of Utah, the unthinkable has just become a nightmarish reality: thirty Secret Service agents have been viciously executed and the vacationing president of the United States is kidnapped by one of the most lethal terrorist organizations in the Middle East -- the dreaded Fatah. But one man, surviving agent and ex?Navy SEAL Scot Harvath, doesn't believe the Fatah is responsible for the attack. Driven by his professional code of duty and honor -- and a solemn vow to avenge his fallen comrades -- Scot creates his own rules to get some answers. But his search for the truth raises the blood pressure of his superiors...and casts his own life in mortal jeopardy. The deadly machinations have been set in motion by a shadowy coalition, comprising some of the highest-ranking officials in government and business -- men who operate above the law, men who realize the threat Scot poses to their hidden agenda...men who will do anything to stop him. Now framed for murder and on the run, Scot goes for broke and takes his own brand of justice to the unlikeliest place of all -- the towering mountains of Switzerland. It is there that he finds an improbable ally in the beautiful Claudia Mueller of the Swiss Federal Attorney's Office. Together they must brave the subzero temperatures and sheer heights of treacherous Mount Pilatus -- and enter the den of the most notorious team of professional killers the world has ever known. "

Good page-turner, but not his best.......2007-09-05
This book is a terrific page-turner -- it is hard to put the book down once you've started reading. I have also read Takedown by the same author, and it is a much better, more mature book. There is a little too much coincidence in this book, and perhaps one or two too many miraculous escapes from impossible situations. It is still very entertaining. One other thing that struck me was the similarity to The Day After Tomorrow by Allan Folsom, down to the role of the Jungfrau in the plot. You should read this book, and read his later works to see the development of an excellent author.
I enjoyed it!.......2007-07-25
Takes some imagination to get past some of the "mental hurdles" you might throw at the plot plausibility. That said, I think if you can imerse yourself in fiction and enjoy it for what it is, this was a good book, and another example of this character kicking arse and taking names.
Good early Thor.......2007-07-07
Although his later writings show more maturity, the pace of this book was shows the beginnings of the good work to come. The easy switch between narrative, dialogue, and just plain "shoot-em-up" scenes was so well done as to be almost transparent; suddenly, you were in a different world.
My main niggling fault was in the gratuitous ending; I found it too much of an afterthought, as it really added nothing.
If you like WEB Griffin..........2007-04-24
...you will like this book.
I compare this book to WEB Griffin's books because it has many of the same type of unlikely coincidences and fortuitous things happening as many of WEB Griffin's books do. I won't ruin it for you by giving away the plot, but if heroes that just happen to end up bumping into old pals that have the exact thing they need at exactly the right moment bother you, you won't like this book.
I really was excited to see this book in the store at the airport because I was headed to Switzerland from Utah and staying in Luzern at the same hotel mentioned in the book! Once I started reading it I thought a lot of the stereotypes that were used in the book were kind of corny, and then the coincidences I mentioned start piling up, and I would have put the book down if I had anything else to read, but since I didn't I finished it.
The book has mildly good action sequences and is fairly clean, with a hero that tries his best to do what he thinks is right; I give the book 3 stars for that.
It might make a good Lifetime movie or something.
he has promise.......2007-04-11
This was the first thriller by a new author I'd read in a long time. I tend to pick one author and read them for broke...Clancy, Follett, Le Carre, Forsyth, Higgins, Robinson....and I picked this one up from the library because the premise sounded suitably geopolitically thrilling. It was not bad. Thor could benefit from a good writer's workshop. The scenes of action are top-notch, but a few things irritated me. Number one, the comic relief SUCKS. Just leave it out. Ludlum did. He'll have this great action scene and then Harvath makes a stupid joke. Also, after a while you get tired of bullets whizzing around our hero's head. There's no cat and mouse. Just lots and lots and lots and LOTS of missed gunshots and superhuman exploits. You get two of those moments per book, not seventeen. Finally, it would be good if "Star Gazer"'s identity were revealed later in the book and his importance to the plot made much more prominent- that's a really great hook but it's revealed too early. The book was leaner than your average Ludlum and less melodramatic but was annoyingly clunky. Keep it up, Brad....ya got promise.

WHAT IT LACKS IN CREDIBILITY IT MAKES UP FOR IN EXCITEMENT.......2006-12-24
It is one of America's worst case scenarios - the President of the United States has been kidnaped. On Utah's snow covered slopes during what was to have been a restorative interlude for POTUS 30 Secret Service agents have been executed and the Chief Executive abducted by one of the most feared Middle Eastern terrorist groups - the Fatah Revolutionary Council.
There is one Agent who lived, a young ex-Navy Seal, Scot Horvath. It was under his watch that the horrors took place; he has messed up to the nth degree. Chagrined, disgraced, Horvath doesn't believe the Fatah group is responsible, and sets out on a one man mission to find the guilty parties.
His work is muddled by a waffling Vice-President and apparent ineffectual thrusts by the Secret Service, the CIA, and the FBI . Terrorists soon make public their demands - $500 million.
Meanwhile Horvath, who has been targeted by a mysterious cell of high powered government and business officials, heads for Switzerland where he believes he'll find answers among a no-holds-barred gang of mercenaries, the Lions of Lucerne.
With boundless luck and sheer determination Horvath soon finds himself on a collision course, propelled toward a showdown with the terrorists inside the glacial Mt. Pilatus.
Readers who don't mind trading ounces of credibility for pounds of excitement will line up for THE LIONS OF LUCERNE.

The Lions of Lucerne.......2006-12-15
My book is called the Lions of Lucerne, and is about an ex-Navy SEAL Scot Harvath who has recently been drafted to the president's personal Secret Service team. He is in charge of the president's daughter, Amanda, on a ski trip. While there Scot's team is whipped out by an avalanche that was caused so that terrorists could make away with the president.
Harvath has been framed for the killing of the Secret Service squad and the leak behind the presidents kidnapping, being the only survivor. He must find the real people behind this while almost being killed three times. He goes to Switzerland after finding many clues leading him here where he must climb mountains and kill or be killed.

Fast, funny, and well done........2004-10-25
Stella is having a bad day, her partner called in sick on the night of a big undercover operation. She is assigned the most incompetent new cop on the Garden Beach PD. They arrest the man they are looking for(a violent rapist), but Leon's incompetence lands her in the ER with a sprained ankle. Her supervisor sends her home to her live in, a fellow cop. She arrives home to find that her partner isn't sick at all, but having a very good time with Stella's boyfriend Pete. She has a meltdown(well worth reading), takes his dog and heads home to Pennsylvania. She arrives in time for her beloved uncle's funeral and discovers that he was murdered and that her aunt is acting very strangely. Worse, her ex boyfriend, the one that stood her up at her elopement, is presiding over the funeral and her uncle's will. Things get stranger when Aunt Lucy disappears, Stella gets arrested and all hell breaks loose.
Fans of the Stephanie Plum novels will love this fast moving story. The characters are deliciously bizarre and you just can't stop reading each page. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Not the usual Bombshell and a very good read.
madcap romantic suspense .......2004-10-13
In Garden Beach, Florida, patrol officer Stella Valocchi completes her undercover assignment of capturing a serial killer successfully in spite of her partner Lou Ann being replaced by a pathetic rookie. She goes to see her boyfriend Pete the cop only to see he and Lou Ann playing bad girl games on the sheets. Angrily she leaves with Pete's dog, but realizes she has no future here as her former best friend and partner and her former lover will cover their respective behinds with nasty rumors about her.
Stella drives to her hometown to spend time with her beloved Uncle Benny and their zany family. However, upon arriving in Glenn Ford, Pennsylvania she learns that Benny committed suicide. Leading the services at Benny's funeral is Minister Jake Carpenter, who once jilted Stella at the altar. Unable to accept the fact that Benny killed himself, Stella investigates the death only to have unwanted help from her family and Jake who she still loves.
Stella is a fabulous protagonist looking to regain her groove following the Florida betrayal and the death of her uncle in which she is the only one who thinks murder occurs. Her relatives are the wild bunch who adds amusing and often frantic lunacy to the fast-paced plot. Fans of a madcap romantic suspense will want to read the amusing yet tense STELLA, GET YOUR GUN, which she would like to use on jilting Jake.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Less spaceships blowing up, more political infighting. Honor has an enemy who is now in disgrace. Her society, with all its advanced
technology and space fleets, has duelling. Said enemy manoeuvres Harrington's bed warmer into such an event, to get back at her. This is where I started to lose interest in the serious. Definitely more on the melodramatic side, with dastardly villainous types and whatnot.
No. 4 in the Honor Harrington series - Court Martial and Duels.......2007-07-22
"Field of Dishonour" is the fourth book in a wonderful space opera series set some three thousand years in the future and featuring David Weber's best fictional heroine, "Honor Harrington." In this book the action moves from space battles to a court martial and then to a series of duels.
These books are best read in sequence and I strongly recommend that you start with "On Basilisk Station" which is the first one.
The Honor Harrington stories are replete with parallels to the time of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. In particular, the Royal Manticoran Navy in which the heroine serves is clearly based on the Royal Navy at the time of Nelson.
The technology of space travel and naval warfare in the Honor Harrington stories has been written so as to impose tactical and strategic constraints on space navy officers similar to those which the technology of fighting sail imposed on wet navy officers two hundred years ago. Similarly the galactic situation in the novels contains many similarities to the strategic and political situation in European history in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
This seems to be quite deliberate: many thinly veiled (and amusing) hints in the books indicate that they are to some extent a tribute to C.S. Forester, while the main heroine of the books, Honor Harrington, appears to owe more than just her initials to C.S. Forester's character "Horatio Hornblower."
In the previous book, "The Short Victorious War", Honor's home nation of Manticore, and their allies, were attacked by the People's Republic of Haven or "Peeps" - an agressive superpower which has been gradually conquering the small nations on its borders in bitesize chunks.
Following a coup in the People's Republic after their first round of attacks were not successful, Haven is now run by a "Committee of Public Safety" headed by one Rob S. Pierre, but the new Peep government is just as committed to the war as the old one was.
Weber clearly means the reader to understand that Haven represents Revolutionary France, and that Manricore and her allies face a war to the death against Haven, which may go on for a long time.
At the start of book four Lord Pavel Young, who tried to rape Honor Harrington when they were both cadets at the naval academy, left her unsupported "On Basilisk Station" in book one, and left her ships unguarded by running away in battle in book three, is facing a court martial. Meanwhile Captain Honor Harrington has brought her ship, the battlecruiser HMS Nike, home for repairs, and is enjoying an all-too brief period of happiness with her lover, captain Paul Tankersley.
Young and his powerful family are willing to pull every political truck in the book to try to get him off and discredit Honor, who they regards as being to blame for his disgrace. They will stop at nothing, including killing, to gain revenge. They realise too late that their attacks on Honor and on people she loves have been the worst possible thing they could have done: they've made her angry.
Many people read Weber for the space battles. They may want to give this book a miss - it's the only Honorverse book which doesn't have a single space battle. Instead there is a great deal of political manouvering, and various successful and unsuccessful attempts to kill people through duels and assassinations. However, it plays an important part in character and plot development in the series, and some of the scenes are very exciting. In particular, Honor's relationship with the people of Grayson develops in new and unexpected directions.
At the time of writing there are thirteen full length novels and four short story collections in the "Honorverse" as the fictional galaxy in which these stories are set is sometimes known. The main series which tells the story of Honor Harrington herself currently runs to eleven novels; in order these are
On Basilisk Station
The Honor of the Queen
The Short Victorious War
Field of Dishonor
Flag in Exile
Honor among Enemies
In Enemy Hands
Echoes of Honor
Ashes of Victory
War of Honor
At All Costs
The four collections of short stories set in the same universe, not all of which feature Honor Harrington herself, are
More Than Honor
Worlds of Honor
Worlds of Honor III: Changer of Worlds
Worlds of Honor IV: The Service of the Sword
The two spin-off novels are "Crown of Slaves" (with Eric Flint) which is a story of espionage and intrigue featuring a number of characters, including Anton and Helen Zilwicki, first introduced in earlier Honor Harrington books such as this one, and "The Shadow of Saganami" which is a kind of "next generation" novel featuring a number of younger officers in the navies of Manticore and her ally Grayson.
For amusement, if you want to try to look for the parallels to nations and individuals from the French revolutionary period and the Hornblower books, one possible translation would be:
People's Republic of Haven = France
Star Kingdom of Manticore = Great Britain
Gryphon = Scotland
Grayson = Portugal
Prime Minister Alan Summervale = Pitt the Younger
Hamish Alexander, later Earl White Haven = Admiral Edward Pellew
Honor Harrington = Horatio Hornblower
Alistair McKeon = William Bush
Crown loyalists and Centrists = Tory supporters of Pitt
Conservative Association = isolationist/hardline High Tories
New Kiev Liberals = Whig Oligarchists
Progressives and traditional liberals = Whig radicals
Legislaturist rulers of Haven = Bourbon monarchy and nobles in France
Rob S. Pierre = Robespierre
Committee of Public Safety = Committee of Public Safety
Anderman Empire = Kingdom of Prussia
Silesia = Poland
Solarian republic = United States of America
Colonel of Marines = Colonel of Marines (A nominal office awarded as a mark of Royal Favour to Horatio Horblower in "Flying Colours" and to Honor Harrington at the start of "Field of Dishonor".)
Wall of Battle = Line of Battle
Ship of the Wall = Ship of the Line
Battleship = "4th rate" sailing warship (in each case too small to form part of the main force in a fleet action, but powerful enough to defeat anything else smaller than a ship of the line/wall.)
Battlecruiser = frigate (5th rate)
Cruisers and destroyers = 6th rate and smaller warships
Field of Dishonor.......2007-01-29
I was disheartened about this book before even picking it up. My first port of call was Amazon to read the reviews on the book. Numerous reviews made mention of the lack of Space Battles in the forth of the Honor Harrington saga. I'm reading these books for a Sci Fi, lasers flash'n, ships exploding, the good guys always win, fix.
I knew I wasn't going to get it with this installment.
This was the first book in 15 years that I read in a day. I couldn't put it down (having to surrender myself to the wrath of my disgruntled ignored wife afterwards).
This book starts to really show how much the characters are developing in the series, and how much the reader starts to care for the main players.
Might have to read the thing again whilst I wait for the 5th book to arrive from the States :)
Arguably the worst of the Honor novels.......2006-07-07
The Honor series is fun to read... if unoriginal in character (see Hornblower or Aubrey), and a bit heavy handed in the writing style.
This book, however, lacked the flow and purpose of the other books. It seems out of place, as are the motivations of the characters. Perhaps Weber needed a "transition" novel to provide a "break" in the storyline. Regardless, compared to the other books in the series, I found this entry lacking.
(NOTE: unlike most, I grade on a bell curve, with 3 stars gathering the majority of votes. 1 and 5 star books are extemely rare.)
Exceptional!.......2006-07-07
Another exception book by David Weber in the Honor Harrington series. I love the female heroine, which is not common in the sci-fi genre of this type, and she is totally believable, totally relatable, and simply amazing! I have read each and every book of this series, I found them all to be equally compelling. I must say though, that this novel in the series was probably my least favorite of them all. Now, I want one of those cats! (read the book to find out what I mean!)
Product Description
An assorted lot of 3 "Honor Harrington" by David Weber books. "Field of Dishonor" (4th), "Ashes of Victory" (9th), "In Enemy Hands" (7th). Three separate books. Not a boxed set.
Book Description
Sandi Patty, the most awarded female vocalist in contemporary Christian Music, saw her stellar career go into a tailspin. Now she tells the story of her long road to restoration. From the agony of divorce nearly ten years ago, Sandi has moved from center stage to the back row of the church balcony and back into the spotlight.
This book is the heart-touching narrative of her years as an acclaimed recording artist balancing her role as adoring mother to four children, her fall from public acclaim, and the steps she worked through with her church and pastor to find forgiveness and peace --- all under the harsh glare of national media attention.
Sandi's story also includes insightful vignettes from their bustling blended family (Sandi's four children and three stepchildren) and the inspiring way God worked in the adoption of an eighth child, their precious Sam.
Sandi's performance schedule is full once more but there's a difference in her music and her heart that reflects the unforgettable journey she's made to reach the other side of hurt and find healing and forgiveness in Christ.

We All Need Forgiveness; We All Need His Grace.......2007-06-23
Thank you, Sandi for writing this book! At times after my own divorce I took on far too much responsibility for it --- and felt like a failure. This book is a wonderful reminder that God loves us --- before, during, and after our mistakes --- or other people's misunderstandings. This is an excellent book that will remind the reader of God's mercy and care.

A Discouraging Book That Encourages You.......2006-12-24
Sandi Patti redefined what Christian music was in the 1980s. No longer was it a four-piece band singing three chord melodies that everybody could sing along with. Whether that is good or bad, of course, is the personal judgment of each individual. But in the pantheon of change, it was Sandi Patti, Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith who changed the face of CCM in the 1980s. (Another change was facilitated by Steven Curtis Chapman in the 1990s).
Until this book came out, the only thing we knew about Sandi Patti was the gossip, both good and bad (mostly bad). But let's give the girl credit - she got right to the point and confessed to the adultery in the introduction. She also told many a story that did not present her in the most flattering of spotlights.
"Broken On The Back Row" is not a therapeutic book in the sense that it will be used as a clinical manual for Christian shrinks. What it is, quite frankly, is the public confession and memoirs of the most talented singer of her era. And what Sandi Patti taught us is that everything has a price. Her price for fame and fortune? The loss of her husband and family, the loss of public trust, and her loss of an effective ministry for Jesus Christ. This book does restore some of the ministry while it leaves the trust in a vacuum.
Many of the stories are heartbreaking, like her leaving her brother in a hospital possibly dying (he recovered) to go do a Christian concert. In most cases but admittedly not all, Sandi puts the blame on herself for what happened.
If Sandi Patti found the God she so deeply sang about and was restored to Him, then that says more than any of her own words can.
So why only four stars?
Well, while I do recommend this book to people, for example, who have endured or inflicted upon another an extramarital affair, it is not for the young hero worshipper (i.e. teenagers) or 'judgmental church person.' Many will never be satisfied with Sandi's confession no matter what she did.
And personally, I'm more than a little hesitant at confessional tell all books because what is the profit motive behind it? I can understand cynics who would say, "Her music career is on the skids so she wrote her life story for money."
While that may be true, let's not forget: she could have whitewashed everything if she wanted. And Sandi comes out looking pretty bad in this book.
Enjoy it.
SHE MARRIED THE MAN SHE HAD THE AFFAIR WITH!.......2006-03-25
I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound judgmental but Sandy Patty admits to making poor choices (very admirable)and after seeking restoration and finding peace from God, she married the man she had the affair with and lives happily ever after! Am I missing something here, because I just don't get it?? One thing I do get though, is that her career never recovered. But I do give her credit for one thing, though. She has never compromised in her music.
A real eye opener.......2006-02-01
This book brings you back to basics. The basics of life and a walk with God. Sandi is not only honest in this book, but she is humble as well. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with life and daily walk with Christ. Thanks Sandi for bringing me back to basics.
God's mercy IS new every morning!.......2005-12-23
Even before I bought and read this book, I couldn't believe some of the harsh, bitter, judgemental and un-forgiving reviews that are posted about it. I presume that these reviewers are Christians like myself, so that makes it even more appalling. This is the story of a beautiful and very talented singer( who happens to be a Christian) and the good, bad and ugly of her life. Sandi gives us enough info about her choices and mistakes but avoids being a "tell-all" book full of lurid details. She takes full responsibility for her actions as well as the consequences she and her family must now live with. It is clear that she has dealt with these issues in the proper Biblical way, but she has also moved on with her life. Through God's mercy and grace, she now has a blessed marriage, beautiful children, as successful a career as ever, and a wonderfully happy life! We should be rejoicing with her and praising God for His favor, not condemning her!! The Bible says that Jesus will leave the other sheep in the fold and go after the one that strayed away, and that's exactly what this whole book is about. It should give any Christian hope beyond description! If Jesus can see fit to forgive and restore us, who are we to not do the same with each other? I am so sorry to see the intolerance and criticism rampant in the Christian community. It's just not right. So praise God for His mercy and enjoy a good read!
