Among literary cognoscenti, Charles Baxter has a well-deserved reputation as one of America's finest writers. Best known for his short stories, Baxter has also produced three novels. His fourth, The Feast of Love, combines the best of both genres--with a light dusting of metafiction to sweeten the dish. The book begins with Baxter himself waking from a nightmare and going for a moonlit walk through his hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. While sitting on a park bench, he is joined by an acquaintance of 12 years--and, incidentally, one of the main characters in the novel. It is Bradley who gives Baxter the name for the novel he's currently struggling to write, and even offers himself as a character:
You should call it The Feast of Love. I'm the expert on that. I should write that book. Actually, I should be in that book. You should put me into your novel. I'm an expert on love. I've just broken up with my second wife, after all. I'm in an emotional tangle. Maybe I'd shoot myself before the final chapter. Your readers would wonder about the outcome.
But why stop there? Bradley goes on to suggest that he send people to Baxter, "actual people, for a change, like for instance human beings who genuinely exist, and you listen to them for a while. Everybody's got a story, and we'll just start telling you the stories we have"--a sly tip-off to the reader of this elegant, quirky, and wholly engrossing novel that the writer may be no more reliable than his narrators.

What follows is a chronicle of love--the mad kind, the bad kind, and the kind that sustains us when everything else is gone. In addition to Smith, we meet Chloé, a young waitress at Bradley's espresso bar, and her ex-junkie boyfriend, Oscar; Bradley's next door neighbors, Harry Ginsburg, an elderly professor of philosophy, and his wife, Esther; and Kathryn and Diana, Bradley's two ex-wives. The characters take turns narrating, often commenting on and correcting versions of events mentioned by other characters in previous chapters, and occasionally advising Baxter on the progress of his novel: "Don't threaten people, especially lawyers" legal eagle Diana warns "Charlie" shortly before she launches into her own story. "Don't threaten your own characters. It's for your own good. You'll wind up in a mess of litigation and... subplots." But in The Feast of Love, God is in the subplots--Oscar and Chloé's involvement in the porn industry; Esther and Harry's agonized relationship with their mentally ill son; Bradley's travails in love, art, and dog ownership. As the novel progresses, these separate strands gradually merge, and not even an unexpected tragedy can dim the luster of this moonstruck romance. For by the time Baxter brings his tale of love and loss and redemption to a close, his characters have all found their way to the feast--bittersweet though some of the dishes may be. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

From "one of our most gifted writers" (Chicago Tribune), here is a superb new novel that delicately unearths the myriad manifestations of extraordinary love between ordinary people.

The Feast of Love is just that -- a sumptuous work of fiction about the thing that most distracts and delights us. In a re-imagined Midsummer Night's Dream, men and women speak of and desire their ideal mates; parents seek out their lost children; adult children try to come to terms with their own parents and, in some cases, find new ones.

In vignettes both comic and sexy, the owner of a coffee shop recalls the day his first wife seemed to achieve a moment of simple perfection, while she remembers the women's softball game during which she was stricken by the beauty of the shortstop. A young couple spends hours at the coffee shop fueling the idea of their fierce love. A professor of philosophy, stopping by for a cup of coffee, makes a valiant attempt to explain what he knows to be the inexplicable workings of the human heart Their voices resonate with each other -- disparate people joined by the meanderings of love -- and come together in a tapestry that depicts the most irresistible arena of life. Crafted with subtlety, grace, and power, The Feast of Love is a masterful novel.

Download Description

Charles Baxter's magical novel is an irresistible narrative of love, a suburban Midsummer Night's Dream that is also a totally original and contemporary invention in creativity. Awaking from a bad dream, Charlie Baxter ventures out into the moonlit night of his Ann Arbor neighborhood. He encounters a fellow insomniac and neighbor, Bradley W. Smith, who tells the first of the tales of love that will make up Charlie's new novel. Exwives and ex-wives' lovers, a high school punk and her former junkie boyfriend, parents and lost children, adult children and their parents -- the stories are told in a medley of perfectly harmonized voices. Funny, erotic, sad, enchanted and yet completely real, The Feast of Love is a novel to delight in and share.

5 out of 5 stars "Pictures At An Exhibition".......2007-10-02

The book is a panoply of life. Baxter describes people in love, life, death, work and all that life gives and takes. Like the orchestral piece by Mussorgsky, "Pictures At An Exhibition," "The Feast Of Love" describes life's trials, tribulations and events in small vignettes. Each vignette is unique and the characters of the picture he paints stand on their own, but they are all related in some way or manner. Primarily, they are all connected in to a coffee shop. The shop is modeled on the Starbucks formula, with soft couches and easy chairs and varieties of coffee. The happiness and sadness, the striving of the people to move through life in a meaningful manner and the successes and failures of the people to achieve that are all described with great aplomb.

Additionally, the book is a metaphor of Ezekial's vision. His seraphim on wheels of fire play a large part. The cogs in the wheels being different people who come together and sometimes break apart for many reasons. Baxter is kind to his readers in pointing this out at the end of the book, by describing the dream through the visions of Chloe', one of the main characters in the book. But in case the reader still does not recognize the vision, Baxter has Chloe' actually seek the answer to this vision, and is informed that it is the vision of Ezekial, by one of the other main characters in the book.

With descriptive metaphors, Baxter weaves his way through the lives of his characters. The young and intense love affairs, the not so impressive sex of people not really in love, the mystical and the prognostications of the fortune tellers and the potential for even reincarnation are just some of the things that Baxter so expertly interleaves into his creation. But at the bottom or interwoven, are the realities of life that many fail to see, or many ignore, because they are either too painful to integrate or too obscure to be recognized. Baxter recognizes them though and allows the reader to experience them vicariously through his book. To read this book is almost to live your life through Baxter's eyes in a matter of days, as the reader works his way through the text.

Much of the book is based on the malady of insomnia. Baxter draws a comparison between the insomnia of "Macbeth" versus the insomnia of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" using Shakespeare to assist him in showing the polar opposites of life. While the insomnia of the tragedy is ominous and eerie, the insomnia of the comedy is more of a Bacchanal, leading to intensities of love and life. Yet, they are both insomnia, and coexist in the reality of life, which mixes with the surrealism of dreams. As Edgar Allan Poe put it, "... Is all we see or seem, but a dream within a dream?" Baxter shows us that the dream and the reality of life do combine to give us a complete whole. Life is never just real, nor is it completely surreal; but rather, it is a combination of both.

The book is recommended for mature readers with a good literary background. But, all readers, regardless of their background take away some extremely intense and interesting lessons from The Feast Of Love. It is easy to see why it was chosen as a finalist for the National Book Award, as it is an extraordinary piece of writing. Baxter should be watched for future creations, as his talent is brilliantly elucidated in this book.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars ... Sad, Serious and Funny.......2007-04-28

This is a story about love...having it and losing it...romantic love, lustful love, fatherly love and platonic love. It is serious, sad and funny. With some surprising dramatic events to make it interesting.

I thought the way the author presented the story was very clever. The cog in this story is Bradley W. Smith and he meets up with his neighbor Charles Baxter who is a writer (our author).

Neither of them can sleep on this midsummer night. Bradley asks Charlie about the book he's writing. He goes on to asks him what the first line is. Charlie recites the first line from the novel he's writing. It's the first line from this novel.

Bradley is critical at first and goes on to suggest that the title of the book should be The Feast of Love and that he, Bradley, should be in it. He further suggests to Charlie that everyone has a story and that he will help him out by sending him some 'real' people to tell him their stories. And that's how the story unfolds. Bradley's friends, neighbors and ex-wives tell Charlie their stories.

I thought the writing was beautiful and I really enjoyed the characters, especially Chloe. I would have enjoyed hearing more about her and what happened with her relationship with her parents. I loved the way she talked and made up words and funny phrases.

I thought there was a lot of good symbolic imagery and references to life and after-life and religion that some good English Lit teacher somewhere could parlay into a lesson or two.

4 out of 5 stars From Ann Arbor.......2007-03-25

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but I think I particularly enjoyed it because it clearly takes place in Ann Arbor, where I live. I could envision all the settings about which he wrote, the neighborhood park he visited at night, the stadium, and the drive across town after the football game. The characters he describes are all very true to the college town that Ann Arbor is. His writing style keeps me engaged. I really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Convincing, entertaining, a good read.......2006-12-24

A totally convincing novel. Baxter is able to switch from character to character and provide insight from many perspectives, including a teenaged girl. Highly entertaining, accessible, fast paced, and nearly flawless. A surprisingly good time. Baxter is a master at dialogue and buidling layers in relationships between characters. There is even some suggestion of a much darker element in one of the relationships--something akin to BDSM, though there is no excessive and needless graphic details. The suggestion makes it all the more interesting. Bravo! Fun to read and share with others.

4 out of 5 stars An impressive novel worthy of award consideration.......2006-09-10

Charles Baxter may have started out as a short story writer, but his latest efforts of note have been his novels. _The Feast of Love_ was a finalist for the National Book Award, and I can see why (though I have still to compare it to that year's winner). The idea is somewhat Kundera-esque--the novel begins with writer 'Charlie Baxter' waking in the middle of the night from a dream of asynchronous gears and finds that he is suffering from temporary amnesia. Once recovered, he decides to take a walk to calm his nerves, and while doing so runs into a neighbor, Bradley, who has a dog of the same name. As they talk, the subject of love comes up, and 'Charlie Baxter' decides to make Bradley the first subject in his new project--a novel about love.

From there, the narrative is taken over by the characters the writer talks to for their stories and reflections on love. Aside from Bradley, we meet his two ex-wives, and a young couple, Oscar and Chloe, who work at Bradley's coffee shop. There is also Harry Ginsberg and his wife, Esther, who live next door to Bradley. Quite quickly, three generations are established to offer different perspectives of love. The interest Baxter sustains here is that the stories are all quite difficult--Bradley has definitely run a string of bad luck when it comes to choosing wives. One is very confused about her sexuality, another is not sure if she wants to relinquish the lover she has when she meets Bradley. Oscar and Chloe fall under the temptations of quick money to allow them to get away together from their bad home situations, and with the allure of quick money comes contact with less than scrupulous people. Even Harry and Esther have a troublesome son, Aaron, who likes to call in the middle of the night to extort money out of his folks.

Baxter's fiction is sometimes a little too distancing, when his characters too freely discuss philosophy or obscure ancient music, playing up the element of quirkiness, but making the characters themselves more representative than sympathetic. _The Feast of Love_ does have moments of quirky conversation, but Baxter sustains it all quite well in this book. Most all of the characters feel very substantial, possibly because Baxter has found a format that permits introspection and philosophy very naturally.

I was quite impressed with this novel and read it quite thoroughly. I found all of the characters engaging and the hints of danger palpable and possible. Baxter is out to paint the Midwest as a solace for the introspective and quietly conflicted. Possibly this is the Midwest Baxter has known all of his life, or perhaps it is a fictive world that he hopes will find a niche in American literature. Either way, this novel has definitely broken solid ground in literary tradition.

After readng this book I could see why Maggie Shayne's Twilight series became so popular. I love how the vampires in this series are human and not the blood suckers that we grew up thinking they were. I will be golad when I can finish the whole series.

    5 out of 5 stars Twilight Begins.......2005-03-11

I bought the book and also have read the first two books in it, but I already knew that when I bought it. I have just become a Maggie Shayne fan and some of her work I could only get in reissues. I found out how great the vampire series was when I read Edge of Twilight. I still didn't know she had a series for it until I visited her website and that is where I wrote down the list and have ordered them all! I love her work and she deserves and has earned to be very admired for her imagination and hard work. I sit in awe sometimes when I read her books and wish I could write. I know it takes a lot of time, effort and creativity and love for her fans. I have just met her through her fan club and I have found she is a very loving and caring person. I have not read to date any of her work that has not deserved to be rated a five and I have read a variety.
    Great work Maggie!

5 out of 5 stars Same book, another name.......2004-10-19

The stories in this book are great! The only problem is, I have already read them in another book. New releases may not be new stories, just the same stories with a new title.

They were creatures seemingly spawned straight from the pits of Hell -- demons, zombies, fire-breathing imps -- all too horrifically close to the stuff of nightmare to be real. But they were. And on the inhospitable moons of Mars, Corporal Flynn "Fly" Taggart, Earth's last line of defence against a seemingly inexhaustible supply of alien warriors, beat them back almost single-handedly.

But Taggart discovers that the war had barely begun...for while he was fighting them on Mars, the hellish creatures had established a beachhead on Earth itself. Now, with the aid of a fourteen-year-old female computer genius, an unrepentantly Mormon sniper, and the best soldier in this woman's army, Fly Taggart must defeat the invaders -- and their treacherous human allies -- yet again...

This author is a horrible writer. Want to hear the ending? "I need the biggest goddam boot you can find".

        That's how it ends.

And it gets better! The marine has two associates, a mormon sniper, and a 14 year old computer genius.

        A true American classic.

If you enjoy Doom, don't buy this please, it's really horrible. If you're a fan of bad science fiction, I highly reccomend it.

        Doom: Hell on Earth
By: Dafydd ab Hugh & Brad Linaweaver

In this book Fly and his best buddy Arlene Sanders make it back to Earth to find that it too has been attacked by the demons and their government has betrayed the human race in order to save their own skins. Now Fly and Arlene and joined by a Mormon sniper, and a teenaged hacker with the task of traveling to the remain of L.A. to infiltrate the city, gather intel on the aliens, and hightail it to Hawaii where the best and brightest of survivors are attempting to develop technology to bring down the alien invaders.

I thought that this book was ok, personally, I loved the first one a whole lot better. This book does the first person view from the view of the four main characters, which is ok, but personally, I like FPV with the ultimate main character, Fly. A decent sequel to the Doom Series. I give it an 8/10.

2 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of the game, but lacks all the elements found in a good book........2005-12-28

I am a fan of the Doom games made by ID software. I have read this book twice.

Let me break this down into two approaches:
        1. If you are a fan of the Doom games, then you'll find that the book does a great job of bringing its monsters to life. The descriptions and actions of the countless monsters you've battled are well implemented. While the story certainly doesn't follow that of the games', since the games have no real story, you definitely feel like you are in the same world: hell on earth. You will enjoy these aspects of the book, but that's it.

        2. If you aren't a fan of the Doom games, then you will find this book to be offensive and an insult to your intelligence.

In the book, the main characters team up with Mormons. I have nothing against Mormons. However, when the authors take every chance to shove Mormonism down my throat explaining why its "right"- then I tend to have problems. But that's not specifically what turned me off. The book is just plain bad.

        Story-
The story is absurd: not the kind of absurd you can appreciate, just plain stupid and weird. I know it's hard to concoct a realistic story from something like Doom. But geez, let's try to hit somewhere around that mark! Two grunt soldiers, who have had no true space flight experience, less bit experience of spacecraft construction, cannot assemble their own custom made rocket from scratch and pilot it from the moon of Mars to the Earth in a few weeks time. But that kind of insanity is child's play compared to other events that take place in this book. Granted Doom is a weird world to model a story after, but you have to draw the line somewhere. There's a point where a story isn't credible enough to appreciate!

        Characters-
I found the main characters that you have to put up with very annoying. Their actions are usually totally random and didn't make sense- you never get to the point that where you "know" them. The dialogue between them is hard to follow and sometimes doesn't make much sense. I did not feel like these characters resembled anything close to real people.

After having read this abomination twice, I still do not feel anything for these characters. I couldn't have cared if they were ripped to shreds by the monsters pursuing them. The only character I found decent is Fly Taggart. I liked his style, but even he couldn't make up for the rest of his sorry little squad, the only other real characters in the entire book.

To sum it up, I thought the authors did a swell job with Fly Taggart and putting the Doom games on page. But that sure as hell doesn't outweigh its major flaws with the story and the characters. Conclusion: this book is worth exactly what I paid for it, 25 cents at a garage sale.

3 out of 5 stars No Ending, Talent Gap Between Authors.......2005-06-10

The first book--had some creepy scenes, but was damaged by bad sci-fi and, except for "Your Truly, Fly", bad characters. There's the strong female character who comes up with a good idea when Fly has a bad idea or a bad idea when Fly comes up with a good idea, and the nerdy computer guy with little to offer in combat, but reveals to them the not-so-very-shocking truth that the brass had been running experiments on teleportation tech for years. This book is plagued by the same flaws as the original. The first book had absolutely NO ENDING WHATSOEVER! and the same applies here. There is also a gap in writing ability between the authors. As I wrote in my review of KDITD, one is mediocre...the other terrible.

4 out of 5 stars It's not suppose to be like the game.......2005-06-09

I keep reading Reviews that the Doom Books aren't like the game. And all i can say is...Its not suppose to be like the game. If anything it gave the game a storyline better than the figure it out for yourself shoot everything that moves type game that doom was. I mean you cant say the Doom game had a good storyline because it didnt. All you did was kill things. The book enhanced the game and gave it more of a solid background for a good story. This in my opinion was the best of the Doom Books.

            Book Description

Unfortunately, in today's world many people fail to experience the freedom and healing power of God's grace. Even Christians too often experience judgement, rather than the love that is the vital essence of Christian life. A visionary guide in the spirit of Celebration of Discipline, Embracing the Love of God calls Christians back to the basics -- to understanding the promise of God's love to transform our most important relationships and fulfill our deepest spiritual needs. Here James Bryan Smith launches readers on a revitalizing spiritual journey. He distills the basic principles of Christian love and provides a new model for relationship with God, self, and others that is based not on fear and judgement, but rather on acceptance and care. Smith's moving insights illuminate the gentle nature of God's love and teach readers how to continue on the path of love by embracing it day by day. For both new Christians and those desiring renewal, Embracing the Love of God offers hope, peace, and guidance for spiritual growth.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2006-10-09

This book was sooo good...Please don't hesitate to get it! Take your time, and drink in the love of God that comes through the pages...
Nothing can separate us from the LOVE of GOD! That is what James Smith explains so well in this book. I just finished it, and know I will read it again. This book encouraged me and lifted me up. He definitely has a gift from God...to teach, help, and encourage...with references throughout, to the Word of God. I look forward to reading more of his books. As another reader said, this book will probably become a classic.

            5 out of 5 stars A Potential Classic.......2002-07-07

Embracing the Love of God is thought provoking and is,in my opinion, a potential "spiritual classic". Mr. Smith's extended essay is organized around three topics: Knowing God's Acceptance, Receiving God's Forgiveness and Experiencing God's Care. Read it, and keep it to re-read, when you need encouragement. Embracing the Love of God was a blessing to me, and I recommend you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Its Weight in Mallowcups.......2001-11-14

I'm not sure which book got kicked out of the top 5 most influential books in my life, but this book replaced it. I've spent the fist ten years of my Christianity picking up not only the love of God, but the baggage that often goes with religion; I've spent the last ten years in the tricky business of extricating the love and dropping off the baggage.

This is one baggage blasting book.

It's a centering book. One I could not read quickly for the need to lay it down and think. The power in this book lay in the fact that it is also the testimony of one man; and last I heard, a person's testimony ranks with the blood of Jesus as far as overcoming goes. (Rev. 12:11) And what have we to overcome? That insidious voice that accuses us before God day and night. It says day and night. (vs. 10) No let up. That's why we need the message of love pounded and ground into our faces until we jolly well believe it.

This book has helped me to identify the voice of the accuser. It has helped me to see God in the teeny tiny ways he wants to be in my life. It has helped me to embrace what I am ever thinking is for someone else.

What I am understanding is that I did not get saved once; I am getting saved all the time, inch by inch and daily, and books like these are small miracles to help. This book is good news. I can't say how grateful I am to have read it.

5 out of 5 stars God loves us as we are...not as we think we should be!.......2001-07-18

What a great book! Jesus loves us. The funny thing is that we spend all this time trying either please or rebel against God...when all the time God's waiting here, patiently waiting to get a word in edgewise--He's waiting to tell us He loves us--and desperately. James Bryan Smith makes this crystal clear. This is indeed great and good news. God has proved and everyday continues to prove His love.

"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

God loves us as we are...not as we think we should be...I have recommended a lot of books in my time here on Amazon. A lot of them have been rather good. But "Embracing the Love of God" falls into that rare category where I must exhort you to buy this book now...I don't even want you to finish reading this review till you do so...This book will change your life. In these past few days, it has changed mine.

Thank you Mr. Smith for this awesome book. I second your prayer (from page 40):

"May we have the courage not to run when the voice of our condemning heart would tear us from the place where we can hear the voice of God saying to us, "You are my beloved child, in whom I am well pleased." Even if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts."

If you're still reading this review and haven't got this book...go get it now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on God's love.......2000-03-09

This is the best book I've ever read on receiving the love of God personally. It is simple, concise, and always inspiring, bringing the reader to grasp the awesome gifts of God's love, acceptance, and forgiveness without the guilt or works baggage. I hope James Bryan Smith will be writing many more books. This one is a treasure, and I've already bought a second copy to give away.
