Book Description

(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)

Naguib Mahfouz’s magnificent epic trilogy of colonial Egypt appears here in one volume for the first time. The Nobel Prize—winning writer’s masterwork is the engrossing story of a Muslim family in Cairo during Britain’s occupation of Egypt in the early decades of the twentieth century.

The novels of The Cairo Trilogy trace three generations of the family of tyrannical patriarch Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, who rules his household with a strict hand while living a secret life of self-indulgence. Palace Walk introduces us to his gentle, oppressed wife, Amina, his cloistered daughters, Aisha and Khadija, and his three sons–the tragic and idealistic Fahmy, the dissolute hedonist Yasin, and the soul-searching intellectual Kamal. Al-Sayyid Ahmad’s rebellious children struggle to move beyond his domination in Palace of Desire, as the world around them opens to the currents of modernity and political and domestic turmoil brought by the 1920s. Sugar Street brings Mahfouz’s vivid tapestry of an evolving Egypt to a dramatic climax as the aging patriarch sees one grandson become a Communist, one a Muslim fundamentalist, and one the lover of a powerful politician.

Throughout the trilogy, the family’s trials mirror those of their turbulent country during the years spanning the two World Wars, as change comes to a society that has resisted it for centuries. Filled with compelling drama, earthy humor, and remarkable insight, The Cairo Trilogy is the achievement of a master storyteller.

4 out of 5 stars A Window on Another Culture.......2007-09-12

Naguib Mahfouz's "The Cairo Trilogy" is a family saga set against the Cairo of the first half of the twentieth century, from approximately 1917 to the mid 1940s. It was (like Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings") originally written as a single novel, but published as a trilogy for commercial reasons. The three volumes into which it is divided, however, do read like self-contained novels in their own right. The first, "Palace Walk", covers the late 1910s, the second "Palace of Desire" covers the mid to late 1920s and the third, "Sugar Street", chronicles the events of the thirties and forties. The titles of each part are taken from three streets in Cairo in which the characters live.

The main character is the paterfamilias Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, a well-to-do Cairo merchant who leads a strange double life. To his family he is a devout Muslim, a stern husband and father who imposes a strict discipline. His wife Amina is virtually confined to the family home; when she courts her husband's displeasure by daring to go out to visit, a few streets away, the shrine of an Islamic saint whom she reveres, the incident nearly ends in divorce. Yet there is another side to Ahmad. Away from his family he frequents houses of ill repute where he enjoys the company of women (he keeps several mistresses), drinking alcohol and other pleasures forbidden to him by his religion. We also meet Ahmad's sons- the irresponsible playboy Yasin, Fahmy, an idealistic Wafdist (Egyptian nationalist) who loses his life during a demonstration against British rule, and the young Kamal- and his daughters Khadija and Aisha, who are also very different in character. Aisha is beautiful and gentle like her mother, but is fated to have a tragic life. Khadija is less attractive, sharp-nosed and sharp-tongued, and initially worries about finding a husband. In the end, however, she makes as good a marriage as her sister (they marry a pair of brothers).

In "Palace of Desire" Kamal, who was only a mischievous schoolboy in "Palace Walk", starts to emerge as a major character. He falls passionately in love with Aida, the beautiful sister of a friend, but the relationship is destined to end unhappily as her wealthy, aristocratic parents do not regard the schoolmaster son of a shopkeeper as their social equal. Disappointed by the failure of this relationship, Kamal, once as idealistic as his older brother Fahmy, becomes a disillusioned cynic, losing both his idealism and his Islamic faith. He becomes obsessed with the study of philosophy, which he believes will enable him to understand the meaning of life, but this goal eludes him; all philosophy seems to teach him is that such an understanding is unattainable.

Kamal remains an important character in the third volume, "Sugar Street"; he has the chance to marry Aida's equally beautiful younger sister Budur, but does not do so, largely because he has grown used to a bachelor existence and fears that, if married, he would have less time for the philosophical problems which have come to obsess him. His father, however, by now elderly and in poor health, fades into the background in this book. The third generation, in the shape of Abd al-Jawad's grandsons, starts to play an important role. Yasin's son Ridwan is a homosexual who becomes the lover of an influential politician. (This must have been a daring theme in the Egypt of the 1950s when the book was written). Khadija's sons Ahmad and Abd al-Munim are committed followers of two very different ideologies, the first becoming a Communist and the second a Muslim fundamentalist.

Of these two ideologies, Mahfouz tends to devote more time to Communism. In 1957, the future of Egypt and the wider Arab world may well have seemed to consist of a choice between Communism and the secular nationalism espoused by the likes of President Nasser in real life and Fahmy and Kamal in the novel. Mahfouz, however, was to have a long life, dying last year at the age of 95, and was doubtless surprised to see the resurgence of religious fundamentalism during his lifetime, while Communism never won widespread support in the Muslim world and eventually withered even in its Soviet and Eastern European strongholds. Had Mahfouz been able to predict these developments, he might well have paid more attention to Abd al-Munim and his ideas.

One of the themes of the trilogy is the conflicts and contrasts between the Egyptian values and those of the West, especially Egypt's attempts to free itself from the influence of Britain (which remained pervasive even after the country had officially become independent in 1932). Westernised characters such as Aida and her family and contrasted with more conservative ones such as Abd al-Jawad. (Even he, however, becomes more liberal later in life, even allowing his wife to go out freely). It is notable, however, that apart from Abd al-Munim the most politically nationalistic characters are all strongly influenced by European thought. The philosophers who most influence Kamal are Westerners such as Bergson, Russell and Schopenhauer, and the Communism which inspires Ahmad was originally a theory developed by a German sitting in the British Museum in the mid -19th century. I felt that Mahfouz was perhaps too generous towards Communism; Ahmad and his equally radical girlfriend Sawsan are portrayed as attractively idealistic, and there is no attempt to contrast their idealism with the brutality of the Soviet regime which they uncritically support. ("Sugar Street" is set during the years when the Stalinist terror was at its height).

Reviewers have compared Mahfouz to a number of major writers; the two most often mentioned seem to be Tolstoy and Dickens. Both comparisons seem to me to be apt. The Egyptian writer shares with Tolstoy the ability to integrate political and philosophical themes into his work without seeming to preach and without interrupting the flow of his narrative. The tormented Kamal is a fascinating character even though, outwardly, little happens to him; the action is all internal as we watch the development of his character and his ideas. With Dickens he shares the ability to conjure up a vivid sense of a particular time and place, sharing with us the sights, sounds and smells of early 20th century Cairo just as the English writer did with those of 19th century London. With both writers he shares the ability to create a large cast of characters we can identify with and care about, however different their circumstances might be to our own. For those like me who are not familiar with Egypt or the Arabic-speaking world in general, "The Cairo Trilogy" acts like a window enabling us to see something of that culture.

5 out of 5 stars Intricate and unforgettable.......2007-08-13

As it happened, I began reading "Palace Walk" as I boarded the plane that was taking me to Cairo on my second visit. The timing was impeccable, and the live city below my hotel windows provided a living breathing illustration to the rich tapestry of the story, thus making it even more unforgettable. In today's world, this book must be read and re-read by anyone who thinks, who questions current events, who struggles to understand and wishes to form his/her own opinions.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a long trip.......2007-06-13

Naguib Mahfouz relates a distant time in a far away place with simple sentences and rich details. He relates the breadth of human experience equally well, offering depth and understanding of women as well as men. For the first time I feel that I have some understanding of the daily life of Muslim men and women.

If you want to laugh, read this book. If you want to cry, read this book. If you want a page turner, read this book. The characters will feel like your own family before you're done.

4 out of 5 stars Long, intense and worth every minute.......2007-06-12

I received this book as a Christmas present and when I saw the sheer size of it, I'll admit, I was frightened. For anyone who feels the same, don't let the fact that you could use this a weight put you off from reading it. You will be losing out on a magnificent work.
Mahfouz's trilogy pulled me into a world I know very little of and made me feel at home. I felt the fear the rest of the family did when Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad walked down the halls, banging his cane ahead of him. I read with anger and frustration, watching Yasin's transformation, or lack there of, and Kamal's.
Amina's growth and Aisha's destruction were an equally intriguing read. The fact that Aisha is unable to join her family and is forced to continue falling apart was a hard pill for me to swallow and ended up making me cry by the end of the novel.
Mahfouz is definitely a master storyteller who creates characters in one of the most realistic ways I have ever read. I will certainly be reading The Cairo Trilogy again.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2007-05-11

This three-generation saga of a decaying Cairo family will totally envelop you. Mahfouz creates a complete and detailed world of characters, places, atmospheres and emotions that you will be reluctant to leave. Among the overarching themes is the contrast between the public face we present to society, and our private conduct and inner reality, a problem of universal significance. These books are a treasure and warrant every superlative.

      A Dr. Rhea Lynch Novel.

      A race between life and death . . .

Life in a small town can take some interesting twists -- especially for E.R. physician Dr. Rhea Lynch. When the chief coroner is shot in a hail of gunfire that leaves a man dead and a teenage boy searching for clues to his missing sister, Rhea is deputized as an assistant coroner. Then a mass grave is discovered -- along with a killer's baffling clue.

Although she is a doctor dedicated to saving the living, Rhea is suddenly forced to find answers from the dead. Soon her skill and courage put her back on the front lines of the battle she fights best: a race between life and death.

4 out of 5 stars Gwen Hunter is a good story teller.......2005-10-21

I just wish the quality of writing was a bit better -- particularly the dialogue, which (to me) sounded a bit soap opera-ish at times, particularly when characters start trying to explain their feelings -- made me impatient to get back to the crime-solving part. But then I realized that actually, it's not much of a mystery -- you learn half-way through the book who-dun-it and then are only waiting to catch them before deaths occur. And while I must confess to liking the emergency room scenes, I think perhaps they took up too much of the early pages and the number and injury of levels of patients within one shift in a one-doctor ER was more than a little unbelievable.

The story involves an emergency room doctor, Rhea Lynch, in a small Southern town, who ends up being deputized as a coroner through a chain of events that leaves the county without a coroner. At the same time, there is a serial killer out there -- something that the public doesn't know (but ought to?). Rhea finds herself involved in the investigation of this case because she is called in as bodies are discovered or people go missing.

Rhea's romantic and personal life takes up a lot of this book. We meet her estranged boyfriend Mark, who is a police officer involved in the investigation, as well as a "Ranger" type character called Eli, who exudes sex but could be dangerous. Who will she end up with? And then there's Rhea's good friend Marisa, who received a brain injury (in a previous book?) and for whom Rhea feels responsible.

I really did enjoy getting back to this book, and read it fairly quickly (although it didn't keep me up all night like some mysteries do). At the same time, I am not as enthused about the book as other reviewers seem to have been. If you love romance novels with a mystery, this will definitely be a favorite author, I think, because there's a lot of romance in this mystery. I think I like my mysteries with not quite so much romance.

4 out of 5 stars The Sherlock Holmes of the medical community!.......2005-05-21

I just simply can't get enough of Dr. Rhea Lynch novels. Ms. Gwen Hunter has hit the mother lode with this character. She has done a superb job in creating warm, believable, caring, fun characters. Each with their own individual personality, and she never deviates from that. Each character stays true to itself and you can tell who is doing the talking without the characters name being mentioned just by the way the dialog moves and the choice of words used.

The county coroner is accidently shot and Rhea is chosen to fill in. This is not something that makes Rhea happy, and when she finds out that the person responsible is none other than her two timing sometimes boyfriend and cop, Mark Stafford, well, all hell breaks loose. You see, Mark had a one night stand during a time when he and Rhea were on the outs, and now the woman is pregnant and claiming Mark is the father. How will Rhea ever get over this? Can she and Mark patch things up? We may never know, first they have to survive a couple of serial killers. Young girls are being kidnapped, tortured, raped and murdered. The bodies are then buried in a strange arrangement.....well, I don't want to spoil all the fun.

Dawkins County is lucky to have a doctor like Rhea Lynch. She's smart, funny, and talented. She's warm and friendly. She also seems to attract trouble. Ms Hunter has written herself another great novel. Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed. The only complaint I could come up with was I got tired of the supposed rivalry between Mark and Eli. They both want Rhea, who will win? It got to the point where I didn't care. Otherwise, this is a first rate story.

5 out of 5 stars Just Gets Better And Better.......2004-03-02

In this, the fourth book in the series featuring Dr. Rhea Lynch, many girls in the rural county in South Carolina have gone missing. When a mass grave is discovered, Rhea is deputized as the coroner on a temporary basis and she must adjust to dealing with dead bodies rather than healing the living. As in the previous books, the ER scenes are riveting. The characters are engaging, especially the newest addition, mysterious Eli Cordell. But most of all, it's because Hunter is such a good storyteller that I enjoy her books so much. There are a few things left unresolved at the end of this story, but I'm sure they will be addressed in the next book. I can hardly wait!

      5 out of 5 stars Dr. Rhea-Rhea's 4th book..........2004-01-05

Dr. Rhea Lynch was an E.R. physician in a small South Carolina town. When gun shots erupted down the street from her home, Rhea grabbed her medical bag and sprinted to help. The chief coroner was shot during the episode and Rhea found herself, unwillingly, deputized as an assistant coroner. Just another item to pay back Mark Stafford, local law enforcer, for. And pay him back she would. In spades!

It was not long before a mass grave was uncovered. All were young girls, all high school ages, some black and some white, and all posed in the grave to make a message. It seemed the area had a serial killer on the loose and he had been killing for quite awhile.

***** Hmmm, seems Dr. Rhea-Rhea and Mark are going through a severe rough patch in romance. (This was a loose end from the last book.) Enter dangerous and sexy man Eli Cordell. This ex-military commando-man will give Mark a serious run for Rhea's affection. This novel has more action, adventure, and romance than the predecessors. So hold onto your seat.

There are a couple of sub-plots around the young girls and Marisa that I do not mention for fear of spoiling something. All-in-all, this medical/police thriller is well worth the price. Readers, be sure to email or write the author telling her that you want Eli to get his own story told! *****

Promotions can be murder; at least in some cases. When the chief coroner is gunned down, Rhea Lynch finds herself having to step in as assistant coroner on a baffling case. A mass grave opens up a huge can of worms, personally and professionally. Rhea is challenged to find the killer before more deaths are racked up, but she is being forced to work with Mark, the guy who two timed her, and with Eli, the man who wants her now. On top of that, her dear friend Risa is being courted by a smooth talking cowboy who may be Rhea's friend, but that won't keep her from murder if he hurts brain damaged Risa.

*** Fans will be glad to catch up with Dr. Rhea's life. The town is taking on added depth with each volume relating this gutsy lady's life. With danger and romance, you will be drawn into and thoroughly involved in the plot. ***

Unfortunately, Drew's gravedigger has just discovered that their cemetery has one too many corpses. The body of an elderly woman has been occupying the field for months before Drew opened for business. The police don't appear to be particularly concerned by the death, and seem to think that the body is that of a vagrant. But for Drew, things don't add up: even if the woman died a natural death, someone was obviously responsible for burying her. The mystery deepens when Genevieve Slater turns up at Drew's door. Drew has always fought an illicit attraction to Genevieve-an attraction that hasn't faded with time. But it's Drew's reputation for amateur detective work that Genevieve is now interested in. 3 out of 5 stars Author unsure of whether she was writing a novel or mystery.......2005-10-24

As a novel, it wasn't bad. As a mystery, it was slow, and the ending seemed hurried, particularly since the rest of the book was so slow. There was a LOT of time spent talking about the detective character's marriage, relationship with wife and daughter, lust for another woman, difficulties with business, etc. There was, in short, more time spent on that than is usual in mysteries. On the plus side, the quality of writing was fairly high, although I wish I had liked some character in the book.

The story involves a man with a wife and baby who has begun a business providing natural burials on a small plot of land he inherited (if these graves are going to be undisturbed, he's going to run out of land fairly soon if business picks up). Business is very slow, however, which is a recurrent theme in the book (too recurrent). His gravedigger discovers a grave on the land that they didn't dig, so the police are called in and find a body of a woman who apparently died a natural death. But who is she? In the meantime, a woman from our detective-natural burial-ground owner's past approaches him -- she thinks she knows who the woman is, and pays him to investigate. He needs the money and likes seeing the woman, so he agrees.

I only give the book 3 stars because the quality of the writing is pretty good -- but as a mystery, this book is not exactly a page-turner.

4 out of 5 stars A good primer on the works of Louis Owens........2003-10-25

This book-length examination of Owens' fiction is a very good beginning in what one hopes will eventually become a well-rounded area of study of the complete works of Louis Owens. A great more needs to be written about this talented author who produced hundreds of little-known but wonderful mainstream newspaper and magazine articles, magnificent scholarly discourse on Steinbeck in particular and American literature in general, and most importantly, on American Indian literature. With all of this to establish his reputation as a scholar, Owens wrote achingly witty novels, and it is enough at this time that LaLonde chose to discuss those novels.

In his tragically truncated life Owens wrote five finely-crafted novels, two autobiographical collections of essays (_Mixedblood Messages_ and _I Hear the Train_), and the single best examination of American Indian literature that exists today (_Other Destinies: Understanding American Indian Literature_). Not to mention the stunningly on-target discourse about the works of John Steinbeck included in two early books (_The Grapes of Wrath--Trouble In the Promised Land_ and _Steinbeck's Re-Vision of America_). In his 54 years Owens produced so much material, in fact, that anyone writing about him has to make some important decisions early, and LaLonde made a good choice with the fiction, because for interested readers, it is the easiest of Owens' works to get access to.

LaLonde has done close readings of each novel, with the exception of _Dark River_, which was not out (or not out long) when LaLonde's text was finished. Arguably Owens' most complex book, _Dark River_ is discussed in less detail as LaLonde's brief exposure to it allowed. LaLonde provides a good starting point as the scholar who is known in American Indian literary circles as the first to publish any academic essay about Owens (in this instance, about his first novel, _Wolfsong_--which appears in revised form in _Grave Concerns_). LaLonde's work with _Sharpest Sight_ and _The Bone Game_ is particularly good.

                                      5 out of 5 stars God's Little Instruction Book.......1999-12-10

I first purchased God's Little Instruction Book 7 or 8 years ago and it has been a blessing, not only to me, but to many who have entered my home and picked it up from curiosity. It is humorous, inspirational and very thought provoking. I am glad to find it still available because it is a GREAT gift for anyone, Christian or non-Christian. My mother who had lost her memory, but not her mind, use to read it to me, over and over, she didn't remember she had just read it so it was new to her each time she read it. I bless God for the person or persons responsible for compiling it. I will be ordering some of the others that are available and expect them to be as good as or better then the first one.
