5 out of 5 stars The Heroism of Solidarity.......2007-05-12

Arnoldi's graphic-novel about a single mother is great. It is not only a direct and clear critique of the problems facing young single-mothers today (an increasingly large demographic in the U.S.), but it is also a hopeful and inspiring story about the way out of those problems -- a way out created by young single mothers cooperating as they find solidarity with one another. Although the story is simply told and very easy to read, it is not a simple story, and she weaves together issues of sexuality, family, and labor union politics.

5 out of 5 stars great story in comic.......2006-10-13

I'm not a teen mother (or any sort of mother), but after reading a story about her struggles and her decision to put it in a comic form, I was intrigued. Her drawings describe her transition from being neglected by her mother and having no other place to go, other than to live with her sister and abusive brother-in-law. She was raped by a stranger in a car, after she left her sisters house and was again rejected from her mother, which left her to wonder the streets. She had the child from the rape, and she dreampt of leaving the town and attending college. When she was fired from her factory job after exposing hazardous working environments, she took off with her new boyfriend to Arizona. When her boyfriend began beating her, she left him, even camping out in the desert under the stars. Eventually she met up with a positive peer group, and began attending college. Great story, helps analyze the variety of circumstances that can happen to teenage mothers, particulaly alot of the negative social backlash that affects them.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly powerful.......2006-06-17

I don't have a lot of experience with graphic novels, but this one is really powerful. It almost moved me to tears in several places. I love the illustrations in which she imagines what's going on in her daughter's brain. A great book to share with teen moms or any young mom who needs some encouragement about pursuing a college degree. Accessible even for those who aren't big readers.

5 out of 5 stars Life is hard, but you can somebody if you don't give up........2000-12-24

This is the true poignant story of a young woman and her struggles to make dreams come true. Katherine Arnoldi, raped and left with a baby at 17, was forced, out of necessity, to take a dead-end, hazardous factory job. Her dysfunctional family tried to crush her and her dreams; her boyfriend turns on her and beats her. Yet through all of her pain and despair she does not give up. Arnoldi shows, in her comic book form, that if you hold on and pursue your dreams that you can overcome the ugliest past. This book is a treasure. It is simply great. And because it is so good you will want to pass it on. This is a book that can speak to the broken hearts of hundreds, if not thousands, of struggling teenagers, single moms or not. Her enduring love for her child, her courage to change her circumstances, a little luck, and a few kind people, transforms what could be a disheartening story into an inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Follow Your Dreams.......2000-12-01

This is a great book that will inspire teens to realize that there is no situation that cannot be overcome. If they are young mothers, they will realize that they can be a great parent, as well as succeeding as individuals. Arnoldi teaches young girls to strive towards their dreams, and as teen moms to fight for equality in the educational system. She even includes the step by step procedure of getting financial aid, and enrolling yourself in college. A very inspiring book for people of all ages.

Book Description

Three men grappling with fatherhood and one single mother of striking character and independence face off in this compelling new novel from the bestselling author of Flyy Girl and A Do Right Man.

After more than ten years of successfully raising two sons on her own, Denise Stewart finds herself involved with both of her sons' fathers as well as in a relationship with a new man. Jimmie, the father of her eldest child, who, after learning that his son is a top basketball prospect, suddenly wants a major role in the teenager's life. Walter, the father of Denise's second son, is trying to gain custody of his twelve-year-old. After attending the Million Man March in Washington, Walter believes he should assume full responsibility for his son instead of for just two weekends out of each month. And there's Brock, the truck driver who is falling in love with Denise but is uncertain whether he wants the burden of a ready-made family.

3 out of 5 stars Okay Read.......2004-08-26

The book is okay. I have read other novels by Omar Tyree that were a little more exciting than this one. I was hoping for a few twists and turns. It seems like some of the characters in the book kept dwelling on their pasts rather than looking towards their futures. Also the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" has been repeated too many times in this story which made it kind of boring.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay.......2004-08-10

This book was okay. Everything that happened in the beginning of the novel, ended up the same way. I kinda hope there would be some type of change of events. I still like it though because I was still interested.

3 out of 5 stars Single Mom Was Cool.......2004-07-15

I thought Single Mom did a good job of hearing all the sides of the story. It gave you an ideal of how everybody felt. It wasn't better than Flyy Girl but this book was good. Its something that is good to read.

4 out of 5 stars SIngle Mom Review.......2004-03-06

Title: Single Mom
Author: Omar Tyree

This book is about a woman named Denise Stewart. She is a single mother from Chicago. She is now raising to sons; their names are Jimmie Stewart and Walter Perry Jr. They are ages 12 and 15. Their fathers decided to come back into their lives, one because of the million-man march and the other because they have basketball in common. Besides this Denise also has to deal with a man that wants to marry her, and she doesn't think that she is ready for the commitment. I thought this book was very interesting, it is another stimulating novel by Omar Tyree. I think a lot of single mothers could relate to the characters in the book. I know I could relate to the single parent home environment being from one myself. So, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a good read about single mothers in today's society.

3 out of 5 stars The single mother blues.......2004-01-24

Being a single mother myself I can understand the challenges. I myself have to juggle between my two children, a full time job and being in college full time. But this book is definitely missing something. Sure there are struggles with single mothers from the ghetto. But what exactly are the struggles? This book only gave sparse details. Nothing was told of what happened to Denise and her son when she was left at JD's mother's house after he was sent to prison. Was she put on the streets or did she just move in with her friend and her two kids? This book has too many holes that should have been filled. I mean as long as it was you would think that a little more information would have been included. This is the first book that I've actually read by Tyree but it seems like he tries to go in the minds of women and think like them.

There was a good part of the book though. When all the men involved tell the story from their perspectives. But it still does not give enough info. Single mothers have to go through a lot more than what Denise had to. Being a single mother myself I know this. I have been through a lot more and I'm still striving, and I'm not even from the ghetto! There was just not enough spice to this book. It needs a tad bit more flavor. Or maybe Tyree should have actually interviewed a single mother and based the book on a true story or actual facts.

    Book Description

London Irish girl Lucy Doyle is red haired and hot tempered, but she also has a powerful libido, which gets her into all sorts of scrapes. After having lost her position as a housekeeper after an interrupted encounter with the grounds man, she needs a new occupation for the summer before going up to University. With the help of Niall Flynn, the best friend of her elder brother, she fakes her references and signs up as an office temp. Along with fellow work colleagues, the deceptively ladylike Bobbie and sexy, sassy Sophie, she carves a swathe of debauchery through London's office land, learning how to put her flexible skills to good use.

    [...]

"...a contemporary story with a no-holds barred plot full of sexual fantasies and down-to-earth prose. Humorous, arousing and entertaining. Exactly what you need in this genre."

For pre-university work experience, red haired Lucy Doyle's family find her a summer job working in a Parochial House in North London. Big mistake. Fiery tempered Lucy is the last person who you'd expect to be serving pompous old farts of the cloth. She'd much rather be serving the gardener, hunky Todd Byrne (which she does) getting herself sacked on her first day.

Needless to say, Lucy is more worried about what her mother will say, than losing a boring, badly paid job working for Father Jessop. Determined to find another job, to ease the blow, she finds herself standing under a sign of a temping agency - Super Staff and signs up. Meeting two girls, the ladylike but filthy Bobbie and the completely smutty Sophie, the likely trio cause a riot of sexual promiscuity throughout the offices of London.

However, getting a reference causes more problems than Lucy expected. When the priests refuse, she turns to Niall Flynn, who she typed for on the odd occasion. He's not the kind of man who will do something for nothing, and as the story unfolds, Lucy notices Niall is becoming more attached to her than she bargained for. She doesn't blame him, he's allowed to play with her, and her friends, so why should he complain? What worries her are the words `girlfriend' and `pregnancy' both of which Niall directs to her, and her alone. Not an ideal situation, for Lucy, who just wants to have fun collecting lovers, annoying bosses, drinking too much and generally having a naughty time.

Written in first person, Office Perks relays Lucy's innermost thoughts, secrets and gregarious actions, pulling you deep inside this explicit story of three girls out on the pull. If you can handle the heat, Monica Belle has created an entertaining, naughty read, sure to keep you turning those pages. It's a contemporary story with a no-holds barred plot full of sexual fantasies and down-to-earth prose. Exactly what you need in this genre. My favourite part of the storyline must be the relationship between Lucy and Niall. I find Lucy's tactics of using reverse psychology thoroughly amusing. Coming a close second is Lucy's humorous encounter with the rich Charles King and his very expensive Shahin Dezh, pre-war rug, not exactly the shag pile, Lucy is used to. There are also notes at the beginning of each chapter, which tease you into reading more - a great idea. This is the first book I have read by Monica Belle, and it will not be my last. I loved the ending - so funny-and so Lucy! I hope there is another book about Lucy's adventures at Uni. If not there should be!

From the supplier: A business watch program was successful in reducing crime incidents carried out by gang members at Duke-Weeks Gwinnett Park in northeast Atlanta, GA. Among the rampant crimes committed at the office park area off Interstate 85 are vandalism, car-theft and smash-grab robberies. Through the efforts of Scientific-Atlanta Inc, the landlord and the Gwinnett County police, security lessons touching on such topics as frauds, scams and gang awareness helped more people be aware and report crimes to the authorities.

                      Book Description

                      The Resistance Has Begun ...

The portals are everywhere, now. Scanning for weapons, for drugs. ... No getting out of line.

The people had forgotten how to fight back. There was no one to show them how. Or was there ... ?

What if the indignities Americans now endure in the nation's airports — ID checks, invasive body searches -- expanded onto our city streets?

What if pedestrian and motorist alike could be searched at roadblocks without pretext, pulled from their cars ... machine-gunned if they stepped out of line?

The year is 2031, and the Ashcroft-Poindexter police state is at full bray. Will Americans continue to endure such indignities like sheep? Or will they begin to gather in basement and abandoned subway tunnel, seeking a leader who can show them how to use the ancient tools of bow and sword to win back their freedoms ... striking from the silence of the night?

Against this backdrop, "The Black Arrow" is a sweaty love story, as an elegant and voluptuous newspaper columnist and a fiery young warrior lass vie for the affections of wealthy record company executive Andrew Fletcher, who turns out to be the masked freedom fighter better known by night as ... The Black Arrow.

When she first saw him he was silhouetted against the moon, a black stallion rearing up to claim all he surveyed.

Her heart slowed in her chest, then. There was a strange keening in her ears that she knew was not of this time or place, but of the other world. It was a vision she was having, a waking dream that would haunt her, drive her in ways unexplained.

In the dark of the city's night, wherever the weak or oppressed cry out in pain or fear, a quiet footfall can be heard on the roof, the owlshadow passeth before the moon. The twang of the bow, the quiet gasp of feathered death ... The Black Arrow lives.

From Vin Suprynowicz, a tale of sex and violence; freedom and fertility; rebellion and revenge. With lots of rock 'n roll.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic Novel in Paragraph Form.......2007-06-01

This Black Arrow is a great read with a caveat: If you do not want well written action/suspense in the graphic novel vein (minus the pictures -- Vin does it all with words), this is probably not the book for you. I say it this way because I got the impression, from reading some of the other reviews, expectations were brought to the table that this book really wasn't designed to meet.

Vin is a newspaper man and I'm glad that in the middle of all the hard, cold, grisly facts he often contemplates in his articles, he decided to put forth the effort of completing a fictional novel with some hope in it. Hope often travels through the avenue of imagination.

The joy of freedom needs to be built up again in the American mind, which has been MTV'ed and D.o.E.'ed and A.D.D.'ed to death. The Black Arrow is desperately needed, far more than some super hero who does everything for you.

Because I, like many others, see the kabuki of justice played out in our society and have often felt helpless against it (our country is run by a pack of crooks and traitors, selling us out to the highest bidder), reading the depictions of wrongs set right in this book was tremendously cathartic. Although it is vilified, this country has a very fine tradition of vigilantism in the face of corruption and tyranny; in fact, it was founded through this unfortunate, but necessary responsibility. The criminal activity of government officials described in this book is not all that far removed from reality and reminds us that they do it all by the permission of those governed.

Books like this and the spark they ignite may be the answer to George Orwell's dark prophecy, "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face--forever."

If you like Unintended Consequences you will like this! A great book. Well written with an interesting plot, a welcome relieif from the left wing drivel we are continually subjected too.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Libertarian Fiction.......2006-09-25

This book may be the best libertarian novel except for the Ayn Rand novels. Up until this book, Vin Suprynowicz had written nonfiction books, and this was his first attempt at a novel. In the story, a growing band of resistance fighters takes on the government of the future, which has grown even larger and more blatantly oppressive than it is now. The book starts out with a comic book feel, then becomes more like an action movie.

The book goes into the origins of some the resistance fighters. The stories of government abuse are infuriating, and become even more so when you realise that they are slightly exaggerated versions of real events.

The hero is the "perfect man" who is a attractive, rich, athletic rock star. The only other characters with depth are Madison, one of the fighters, and Dan Brackley, the main villain. When you read the book closely enough, you can see that the hero is a reflection of the person the author would like to be. In the biography section, Suprynowicz says he is still "searching for his Madison". I hope he finds her.

The book is clearly aimed at men. There were long decriptions of weapons and tactics, which I enjoyed, but not everyone else will. The same thing goes for the explict sex in the novel. The book is 700 pages long, but, like the Rand novels, never drags. It has a bit of everything: action, romance, politics, law, heroics, and character development. This book could be made into an excellent movie, but I'm betting nobody will touch it because of its message.

                      2 out of 5 stars A Contrary Opinion.......2006-07-05

For me, the only good thing about this novel was the consistent, "wake up and see what your government is doing" message. As a cautionary tale, it served its purpose, but as a novel, it left me stone cold.

My first problem with this nearly 700-page story was its hero, a man who:
........was physically perfect (massive shoulders and tree trunks for limbs)
........had a touch of metaphysical/magical ability (he had "The Sight")
                      ........was brilliant
                      ........had vast wealth
........turned down a career as an NFL quarterback to become a mega-rockstar
........was expert in all forms of weaponry, both modern and antique
........could get it up four times an hour and keep that up all night
In short, I'm convinced the hero was nothing less than a Marty Stu (for those unfamiliar with the term, a Marty Stu/Mary Sue is a fictional character who is portrayed in an idealized way and who is lacking any noteworthy flaws -- a character made in the image of how the author sees himself in his fantasies)

Some of my other issues with the story involved:
........A cast of supporting characters so one-dimensional and boring that I never cared a whit about any of them
........Pages and pages of weapons description
........An absurd and pointless paean to Eric Carmen as the most underrated "rocker" ever
........Many equally pointless insertions of bad song lyrics
........An obsession with babies -- This obsession was so great that not only did our hero refuse to have sex with women who didn't want children, but all the "good" female characters wanted children immediately, the more the better, and brought up the subject with great frequency (here again, I became convinced that I was seeing little more than a projection of the author's wishful thinking, bordering on desperation)

To top it all off, I was supposed to believe that assassinating a few low-level government flunkies was somehow going to wake people up, change their minds, and set them on the path to righteousness.

It was depressing, because even though the message of the novel was serious and the author had some valid points to make, they became tainted by the unbelievability of the characters and the story. Maybe it shouldn't be that way. Maybe the ideas stand on their own as incorruptible. But if I have trouble taking the messenger seriously, how much credence am I going to give to the message itself?

All in all, this book had so much less impact on me than it could have. I purchased it because I'm concerned about government abuse and because I believe in reason, individual responsibility, and self-determination. But I also like my books to be well written, with fully realized characters, interesting dialogue, and a story that goes beyond the feel of a clichéd action movie. I didn't find any of that here.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding storytelling, grim warnings, hopeful message.......2006-05-19

I won't go into the political overtones or the alarming "it CAN happen here" atmosphere that is so wonderfully embellished by Suprynowicz; hopefully by now you'll already understand that part. I'll just state simply that this is an outstanding piece of storytelling and that it is eminently worth saving pennies from your lunch money to buy.

                      Book Description

The fact of the Lost Ark of the Covenant is one of the grant historical mysteries of all time. To believers, the Ark is the legendary vesel holding the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Bible contains hundreds of references to the Ark's power to level mountains, destroy armies, and lay waste to cities. The Ark itself, however, mysteriously disappears from recorded history sometime after the building of the Temple of Solomon.

After ten years of searching through the dusty archives of Europe and the Middle East, as well as braving the real-life dangers of a bloody civil war in Ethiopia, Graham Hancock has succeeded where scores of others have failed. This intrepid journalist has tracked down the true story behind the myths and legends -- revealing where the Ark is today, how it got there, and why it remains hidden.

Part fascinating scholarship and part entertaining adventure yarn, tying together some of the most intriguing tales of all time -- from the Knights Templar and Prester John to Parsival and the Holy Grail -- this book will appeal to anyone fascinated by the revelation of hidden truths, the discovery of secret mysteries.

Graham Hancock is a master at storytelling and this is non-fiction to boot. If you're an Indiana Jones fan or a fan in general of religious artifacts and their extraordinary powers, then this is definately one book you don't want to miss. At least in Indy is/was fictional, made up, and good. Here Mr. Hancock weaves the non-fiction in a adventurous way, so you feel like you are actually there with him doing the research. Let me tell you, I am a believer! If the vatican doesn't have it, then this is definately where the ark is!

4 out of 5 stars I am glad someone wrote this.......2007-05-05

The authors search for the Lost Ark of the Covenant often puts him at odds with the scientific and religious establishment. The phrase "In for a penny, In for a pound" has never been more apt. There are many things in the bible and ancient history that just don't add up and most people are afraid to cite the obvious. The author fearlessly goes where most researchers are afraid to go.
It is certain that the Old Testament is a chronical of amazing events. These stories were already ancient history when the bible was compiled. I agree with the author that there was a civilization that had attained a sophisticated level of technology, the remnants of which, are responsible for the sudden appearance of the roots of civilization as we know it

I disagree with the reviewer who calls this type of inquiry silly. it is important to have an open mind and to risk being ridiculed to get at the truth.

These books are nonsense. Any books whose titles include any of the words 'Ark of the Covenant', 'Holy', 'Grail', 'signs', 'mysteries', 'secrets', 'Templar', 'alien', 'code', 'supernatural', 'mythic', 'cosmic', are just giving away the fact that they are unscientific rubbish. And don't you think it is significant that leading Nazis like Heinrich Himmler had a passionate interest in the Ark of the Covenant? All these silly books are based on wishes, fantasies and dreams, but we should all know that children wish, adults decide. Adults who still retreat into these puerile daydreams are regressing, that is, reactionary.

5 out of 5 stars Much more factual than Hancock's other books...........2006-05-11

This is a very provocative book, but in the main, this is because the set of historical theories, as laid out, are so sweeping in scope, rather than because the theories are altogether ill founded. Rather than creating the story from scratch, one can make a case that Hancock brought widely separated, but quite genuine, pieces of history together to create a complete picture.

At the same time however, one can see traces of an entirely different type of mythological writing in this book. The book is laid out in more or less chronological order, and around the middle of the book, Hancock describes how he is 'touched' spiritually by some of the liturgical ceremonies of the Ethiopian church. Unfortunately, this experience, in making Hancock feel more comfortable with his mystical side, seems to have unleashed a fount of ill-founded techno-religious speculation that turns into a veritable river in his later books. All this may be well and good in it's own place, but Hancock's continuing hunt for a 'master' civilization (Atlantis), has precious little to do with the story of Ethiopia and the ark. Needless to say, legendary religious artifacts like the ark of the covenant are controversial enough without such vaporing appended, and Hancock's mystic musings do a wonderful job of turning what might be a worthy topic of historical inquiry into an archeologist's joke. Those chapters in the book covering Hancock's religious theories and grand historical musings are striking in their contrast of speculation to the greater portion of the book, where a logical and evidentiary approach are in evidence.

Fortunately, after a couple of conjectural and speculative chapters in the middle of the book, the historical narrative reasserts itself. Altogether, this is a fascinating book, and the way in which the book is laid out, with new information changing the picture through the chronological course of Hancock's investigation, makes the book exciting reading able to compete with the best thriller.

Again I must emphasize that this early example of Hancock's work is controversial history, rather than the highly speculative history that is the better portion of Hancock's work.

5 out of 5 stars educational and entertaining.......2004-11-07

Cover to cover it is an engaging read. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with some of his conclusions and intrepretations it is still an educational and entertaining read. It describes a rich and ancient history of a country that the average North American would otherwise not know anything about. I would recommend it to any one interested in biblical history.

I was highly impressed with Graham Hancock's committment to completing his quest and telling his story. He did so at the cost of his family, which is regretable. I much appriciate his sacrifice for all of us. It is obvious that he put a great deal of time, research and effort into his work. We now have a more clearer story of the "FOUND" Ark of the Covenant of God; "found" because I do believe it is in Ethiopia.

However, I do disagree with a few of Graham's conclusions, specifically with regard to Moses as only being a master magician, educated by the Egyptians, and Jesus as not being the Divine Son of God. I have many ideas and comments on the subject, but with just 1,000 words allowed, I must be brief.

I also wish to contact Graham, to share some of my insights, but I do not have a way of establishing communications with him. I have numerous questions, such as: 1) Has Graham actually read the Book of Enoch; 2) Has he done research on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (for they have a lot of templar type traditions-- and a definite connection with Freemasonry); 3) Has he actually attempted to contact the modern Templars and the Vatican for direct questioning, particularly concerning the true motivation for the Knight's quest for the Ark, and concerning the contact of Pope Clement V with the Ethiopian delegation, just one year prior to the persecution of the Templars; and 4) is Graham himself a Templar?

I am a Christian and have full faith that the scriptures are accurate. I also do not believe that it is inconsistant that a just and loving God would slay the wicked, for disobeying him-- especially on such sacred and important matters as the establishment of God's Law and Gospel to His Children, on earth, through his vessel-- the Ark. It is not unjust for the righteous to slay the wicked. Therefore, I do not classify God as being a psychopathic murderer as Graham had suggested.

This book was the first of Graham Hancock's I ever read. Although the size was, at first, daunting, I quickly was drawn into the book as it contextualizes the history surrounding the Ark of the Covenant to explain where others quests may have gone awry. Hancock enables the reader to retrace the possible/probable trail the Ark may have taken and explains each twist and turn with basic logic. I was able to read it in 3 days and retained enough to retell the tale during 3 a.m. guard duty shifts to my fellow freezing comrades, making the time pass quickly and opening up more lively conversation than you usually find guarding an empty perimeter in the snow. I loaned it to a professor and have yet to get it back. Of course, now my brother has a copy. A great book.

If you are interested in the mystique of the lost Egyptian wisdom, the Ark, Atlantis, mysteries of the Bible, the Knights Templar,or just plain enjoy reading a good book, this one is a must! I believe that Graham Hancock has found the true resting place for the Ark of the Covenant.
