5 out of 5 stars Excellent work by a strong new fiction voice.......2002-07-23

I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. Schaap has given us one of the finer reads in inspirational fiction. In terms of quality, voice, style, and most of all, story, this novel stands leagues above many others that have garnered far more attention and plaudits in the "Christian fiction" category. In addition, his own Christian worldview shines through without hitting his readers over the head with the more common tactic of "sermonizing." It's too bad this novel hasn't received the recognition it so obviously deserves.

I applaud the book and look forward to the author's next work.

5 out of 5 stars Romey's Place ..... or was it?.......2000-01-01

This book made me wonder if Schaap was secretly writing about me and my childhood friend. Same type of small town. Same type of fathers and families and churches. Same type of childhood experiences and thoughts in many ways.

But moreover, it was thought provoking in the way it looked at how we grew up, learned the things we learned about life and our "faith" and so much about the influences our parents have on our lives long beyond when we move out and start our own lives. It hit home on how other people in our life change the way we are and will be and that we indeed have that ability to change others also.

Deeply moving and takes a whole new approach on the whole concept of Christ's gift of GRACE. How we learn it, receive it and dispense it.

Well done and worth reading....maybe twice. Great for a discussion group!

    Book Description

Shelley Browning, recovering from a disastrous marriage, is determined to get the college degree she abandoned to wed a young doctor. She's back at Oklahoma University at age twenty-six, a little older and a lot wiser. But Shelley can't explain why she takes a class in government taught by Grant Chapman -- except that she feels compelled to see him again.Ten years ago Grant was the best-looking teacher in her high school. He left after a few months to take a glamorous job as a congressional aide, but not before "the kiss." Unplanned, stunningly hot, and never repeated, a single kiss with Grant haunted Shelley as a symbol of "what might have been" with the right man.Now famous and as charismatic as ever, Grant has abandoned the rat race on Capitol Hill for a university career. Pleased to find Shelley in his classroom, delighted by her honesty and, believing there is no impropriety in dating her, he asks her out.Isn't that what Shelley has secretly hoped would happen? Never had she felt more confused about what she really wants. As their relationship grows, guilt mingles with desires she cant deny. Her heart longs to trust Grant; her head thinks intimacy is too risky -- for both of them. And when a stunning accusation emerges and pressures mount from unexpected sources, Shelley is faced with making a leap of faith to believe in love...or with walking away from the man of her dreams.

    1 out of 5 stars Simply Horrible.......2007-07-10

I listened to this in the car thankfully...so I could fast forward through all the long drawn out sexual scenes...which is what the bulk of the book is made up of. It bored me to tears....not much of a plot..just some dialouge between 'lusty' scenes. Dont waste your time.

    5 out of 5 stars captivating.......2007-05-16

Earlier piece from Sandra Brown, but with the familiar twists. And very hot one indeed.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible. Just...terrible........2007-02-28

I just finished listening to this book in the car. My need to finish any audiobook that I start was the only reason I made it through this garbage. In a nutshell: Shelly was kissed by her civics teacher, marries the wrong guy, gets divorced, meets her civics teacher 10+ years later when he is her college professor, he still has the hots for her, they fall in love, get married, have a child, and both earn the big bucks in some far-fetched, "don't ask questions" sort of way. True to romance novel form, the male lead teaches the female protagonist EVERYTHING about passion and she sits there like a log and "experiences" it. I never want to endure another sentence where the male lover "praises her [...]" and "worships her perfect stomach" etc. Why couldn't Sandra Brown challenge herself and write passion and romance the way it really is? In a give-and-take, two-way street fashion? In short: awful, unrealistic, terrible, with about two pages of conflict. Save your money and check it out of the library. But if you want to save your time, check out something else. PS: As an English professor, let me say that it is NOT kosher to date your students. ALL universities have problems with this, not just private or religious ones.

3 out of 5 stars Remembering Things That Might Have Been........2006-08-03

In the 80s and 90s, it wasn't against the law for teachers to carry on with a student of whatever age. In the 50s, we were all crazy about our choir director, and his suffering through a divorce made him all that much dearer to us. He'd sung with a famous group before coming home to our school to direct the music program. The only reason I passed the auditions for the Girls' Glee Club was my popularity on local t.v. talent shows. Not once did he ever touch any one, as he had principles, never patted any student on the back. Nowadays, you go to jail if you are seen alone with an underage person not related to you. From news reports, it figures more that middle aged female school employees are abusing the boy students.

When this story took place, it was not abuse unless a man abused a boy. Shelly was only sweet sixteen when the male teacher with the roving eyes singled her out for a real embrace along with a kiss to remember. He was sent packing in a discreet manner, no charges, no publicity, only heartbreak for young Shelley. Was it only a teenage crush or infatuation. She somehow overcame her hurt from what felt like desertion and got on with life, marrying right out of high school as many girls do.

After she was divorced ten years later, like Charlotte did, she went to college so as to get a degree and not have to depend on a man. Like Valerie, she decided on a political science major (Charlotte went into education and became a teacher), and sparks flew between Shelly and her professor -- the very same high school heartthrob. It built into a full-fledged affair, and their kisses became kisses of fire. He'd been the man of her dreams for many years, but this was no fairy tale. No man, whom a woman loved and desired came back into her life like a knight on a white charger. Nothing worked out that easily. A price had to be paid.

She wasn't sure she'd be able to pick up the pieces of her life again. She no longer was an emotional teenager but an experienced divorced woman. Grant was a lot like my first love, but he loved me in a different way and let me spread my wings like a blue butterfly and fly away to my destiny. Grant was good at using double entendre, and proposed that she be his assistant, grading his exams and such. Like Bill, he held her on his lap. The silver in his hair only heightened his attractiveness. Had he changed so much, or had she merely grown up and was ready for a real man. Like a master conductor, you've got all the different parts of your life playing in harmony and making absolutely beautiful music together. Sit back and enjoy the symphony -- you deserve it and the benefits of first-time motherhood. I will always remember the Nashville Symphony that Oct. when Michael Feinstein sang my request. Now, that's love of the first rate. A kiss is merely a prelude to the real thing.

2 out of 5 stars Not so much.......2006-07-27

I like Sandra Brown but this book should have been rewritten. I have been listening to it on audiobook and also have the actual book. I didn't realize until I was actually listening to it how badly written it was. It was as if Sandra wrote it with a thesaurus well utilized. Shelley came across as SO immature, even at age 26. And she describes Grant as if he as 45 instead of around 35. I would LOVE to see her rewrite this and create a better female lead, instead of the wimpy Shelley that we have. I really liked Grant and would like to have had him placed in a much better story. It would have been so much more interesting seeing Shelley interact with her ex-husband more (so he could get a better comeuppance). Instead, we get vascillationg between Yes and NO and Yes and NO...and her reasons were wimpy too. As someone who does teach on the university level, NO, I would not date someone I was teaching, no matter how attracted I was to them. It is not ethical and, to me, Grant was very ethical. So much more could have been done to bring them together. It moved too slowly AND too fast at the same time. Now that takes talent! Thankfully, Sandra has written much better books since.

3 out of 5 stars Dated but interesting story.......2005-07-23

Ten years after a smoldering kiss from her civics teacher, Shelley finds herself back in his classroom, college classroom that is. Recently divorced from the husband she nurtured and put through medical school, Shelley is starting over.

Also starting over is Grant Chapman, former high school civics teacher cum congressional aide, now college civics professor. He is trying to live down a Washington DC scandal involving the daughter of a senator. The last thing he needs in his life is the now grown up teenager that sent him running from Oklahoma to the nation's capital after a fateful kiss.

The passion they felt ten years earlier but never acted on is rampant, and Grant attempts to seduce her until she will finally give in to him. Despite trying to stay away from each other, they cannot. They have a lot of obstacles thrown in along the way including more scandals, the college chancellor, and a host of old lovers.

The material is really dated, but if you read the preface going in, you would know that. Yes, Grant had a hard time saying no, but back when this was written, it was still okay to slap women around in movies, so you can forgive the timing.

Despite the "datedness," it is a compelling romance, which has you rooting for he charismatic leads right until the end. This is a short one - less than 200 pages, and can be read in a single day. It is a nice escapist story

    1 out of 5 stars BAD CONNECTION.......2004-10-16

I DONT THINK I SHOULD EVEN DO A REVIEW OF THIS BOOK, BUT I WOULD LIKE OTHER READERS TO KNOW HOW I FELT ABOUT THIS BOOK. I WAS SO SURPRISED THAT THIS BOOK EVEN GOT PUBLISHED. I THOUGHT TEACHERS GOT INTO BIG TROUBLE FOR THIS KIND OF STUFF, BUT TO MAKE A LOVE STORY ABOUT IT WAS VERY WRONG. IT MAKES IT SOUND OKAY FOR A TEACHER TO KISS ONE OF HIS STUDENTS AND THEN TO TURN IT AROUND AND HAVE THEM FALL IN LOVE, I JUST DIDN'T APPRECIATE THAT. I REALLY LIKE SANDRA BROWN'S WORK BUT I THINK SHE COULD HAVE KEPT THIS OUT OF HER COLLECTION.

2 out of 5 stars Sexual Predator + Desperate Girl = Classic Love Story?.......2004-10-02

This story had so much potential. I was hooked on this book from the blurb and had such high hopes for it only to be disappointed. I know that professor/student affairs go on, but I can't imagine them being as creepy as the relationship described in this book. The guy needed to be doused with some pepper spray on several occasions and the girl needed to grow a backbone and stick up for herself when she did not desire his sexual advances. The whole thing was not what I would call romantic, just strange. The entire book was strange. NOT one of Sandra Brown's best pieces.

1 out of 5 stars Stupidest book I've read in a long time!.......2004-07-12

I have enjoyed Sandra Brown books in the past but this one is awful! I wish I could give it 0 stars. The plot is lame, the main character is a limp dishrag, and the dialogue is painful to read. No real life people act the way these characters do. The scenario is so dated--any university instructor who acts like Grant would be up on charges of sexual harrassment and deservedly so.

1 out of 5 stars Farthest thing from a "classic love story".......2004-06-16

I totaly agree with previous reviewer. Not enough plot, too many unrealistic bedroom scenes, poor dialog. I also found the male character ignoring the female saying NO troubling too. Not a good way to portray this type of situation at all.
This is the first book I've read by Sandra Brown and I am not impressed. I have no idea why a publishing company would re-release this 20 year old story. It is a waste of time and money as far as I'm concerned.

A complete short novel, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS is a tale of terror unilke any other. The Barren, windswept interior of the Antarctic plateau was lifeless--or so the expedition from Miskatonic University thought. Then they found the strange fossils of unheard-of creatures...and the carved stones tens of millions of years old...and, finally, the mind-blasting terror of the City of the Old Ones. Three additional strange tales, written as only H.P. Lovecraft can write, are also included in this macabre collection of the strange and the weird.

What can you say about one of the all-time classic horror novellas by one of the founding fathers of the Eldritch horror genre ?

"At The Mountains of Madness" (henceforth ATMoM), was penned in 1931, and relates the disturbing tale of the ill-fated geological expedition, sent by Miskatonic University, to that most distant, inaccesible, and mysterious of all wastelands ... the frozen depths of Antartica.

Unspeakable horrors and mysteries await them, as well as bizarre discoveries that threaten to turn the entire scientific community on it's head - nightmarish fossils, mindboggling geologic formations, and the remains of an alien civilization that predates humanity by many millions of years, and which were hitherto only hinted at in the most crazed ramblings of exceedingly rare and closely guarded tomes of accursed lore.

ATMoM is a highly recommended, and (in it's day, highly original) tale. It's a fast read, and it's datedness adds to, rather than detracts from, the creepy ambience of the overall story. Better still, the patent on HPL's works have now lapsed, and his entire body of work is now legally in the public domain, and can be read on-line for FREE.

It gets a solid 5 stars from me.

p.s. An interesting footnote from real life: my Uncle served in the US Navy during WWII. After the war, one of the places he was stationed for a while was in Antarctica, back in the 1950's. He's seen, and camped at, some of the places that are portrayed in ATMoM ... including Mt. Erebus, McMurdo Sound, and others. That added an interesting spin for me, when I read it.

[ADDENDUM] For those of you who are already HLP fans, this book lays out the history and origins of "The Old Ones", the Shoggoth servitor race, The Plateau of Leng, and it also makes passing references to the nighmarish mountain-cities of kadath, which are further expounded on in another of HPL's classic novellas, "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath".

5 out of 5 stars Dark stories and purple prose.......2007-05-09

This book proves Lovecraft's mastery of the supernatural horror story, not that the point needed proving. These four stories, from novella-length to 6 pages, show Lovecraft's eerie skill at its best: the slow build of creeping terror, all the way to mind-shattering crescendo. Somehow, and this is his true genius, he carries the reader through the building terror, without ever clearly defining its subject. By the time each of lovecraft's stories is told, you probably don't even want light shined into that darkness, for fear that the shape of his demons will be worse than the formless fear.

The first story spans geologic time, when explorers discover beings from the earth's earlier ages. Despite a gory mishap, the surviving scientists insist on tracking the ancients through the inhuman goemetries of a city hidden in the last unexplored wasteland on earth. Then , when the searchers nearly catch up to the deadly creatures in the caverns below the city's ruins, they are turned back by something far darker. If that story builds too slowly for a modern action-junkie, then I recommend the last in this book. In about 6 pages, a man too exhausted with terror to care about his own execution recounts a tale with a startling punchline.

Outside of the B-movie plots and storytelling, the fun of reading Lovecraft lies in the rolling cadences of his language. One could almost use his books as a thesaurus of the eldritch and evil. If there could possibly be a vocabulary of the unspeakable, it would be Lovecraft's. Even if this genre doesn't suit you, it may still be worthwhile to experience the dark blossom of his florid writing.

5 out of 5 stars Witchcraft, the Old Ones, Haunted Houses, and the Undead.......2007-03-01

                  H. P. Lovecraft is the father of modern horror. His stories are infused with more style and substance that many modern horror novels of 300+ pages - and most of his stories are short, in the tens of pages. Lovecraft is the master of the eerie and foreboding. A constant sense of dread, uncertainty, and fear of an unknown, unnameable, and indescribable ancient, primordial evil fills the pages of his books. He utilizes a carefully constructed mythology of his own creation, using such myths as the Cthulhu, the Necronomicon, and stories of the Elders and Old Ones. His stories have a surreal and dreamlike (or nightmarish!) quality to them.

"At the Mountains of Madness" contains four stories - one of some length, over one 100 pages, and three much smaller works.

The story of the same name as the book is a story of an arctic expedition that discovers the remains of a yet unknown, intelligent extraterrestrial civilization that predates human life on earth. The survivors of this expedition have to face unknown evils lurking below the arctic surface. This is a good story set in a great location. I am a fan of the movie "The Thing" (based on Cambell's "Who Goes There?"), and I love the foreboding setting of the arctic environment. The story is good, but there are better ones.

"The Shunned House" is a story of an old shunned house with a hidden evil in the basement and a secret past. The story is of one man's efforts to unravel the mystery and put to rest the evil presence that dwells there. This is another good story, and creepier than some of the other stories in this book.

"The Dreams of the Witch-house" is a story clearly inspired by Goethe's "Faust" - even mentions witches, a character like Mephistopheles, and Walpurgis Nacht. It's a story about unbridled knowledge and witchcraft - much like "Faust." It tells of an odd room with unusual mathematical and geometric properties that enable the user to travel to other dimensions involving witchcraft. Btw, there is an episode of Showtime's Masters of Horror series based based on this story.

"The Statement of Randolph Carter" is the shortest story in the book, but one of the scariest. True to Lovecraft's style, the evil entity is never really revealed. Your own mind has to imagine the true nature of the horror. The story is about the investigation into a sepulcher by two men in an effort to discover undead beings still living there.

Overall this is a great Lovecraft book, not to be missed by those that love horror and especially Lovecraft fans.

3 out of 5 stars 1 out of 4 stories and still worth the purchase price.......2007-01-05

I really liked first story - The Mountains Of Madness. Yes it went on a bit but I really dug the archeological angle to the story and the fear of the survivor of that expedition. I bet that in an age of no sattelites etc, this story on the potential dangers that may lie in uncharted Antartica must have been quite chilling.
There were three other stories in here that were forgetable:
                  The Shunned House
The Dreams In The Witch House
                  The statement of Randolph Carter.

I picked up a copy of this book on a whim. I found it interesting at times and otherwise confusing. I looks like a mix of the mystical east and gnostic west. I would agree it is not for everyone but it has its moments and I'm sure some people get knowledge from it.

                                Response to 1984 nonsense comments:
Charles Fillmore's Metaphysical Bible Dictionary is one man's attempt to expand his own spiritually. Many others have found it to be a very good starting place from which to interact with God or Spirit He never intended it to be static, and it hasn't been. Those with open minds and hearts who have encountered it have seen it as an aid along the path to greater understanding of their personal relationship with God.
Those who spend so much time criticizing others' beliefs cannot possibly have time to develop any of their own, which leads me to believe they must be "followers" of someone's words. Most organized religions sprang from the dissatisfaction of an individual with the status quo, and their search soon became someone else's dogma.
As for Truth with a capital T, it is merely Fillmore's attempt to differentiate what he came to view as God's truth versus the twisted truths of man. Every organixed religion considers their truth as God's truth with a capital T. However, some are accepting of others' views and some are not. Obviously, the religious affiliation of the "reader from San Francisco" does not.
If you want a place to begin to dig deeper into the possibilities that await you in the scriptures through the experience of someone else, the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary is a great platform from which to catch a train that can take you away from the insecurities, fears, and small mindedness of those like the reader from S.F.

I disagree times change the definitions and stories in the Bible though valid then don't always make sense to us now these are just the truths that fillmore discovered for him self.
on the other hand, their are many beliefs and religions and for anybody to tell anybody else that they are wrong is just wrong in my mind(again that doesnt make them wrong). to me their is no wrong or right.

                                Metaphysical Bible Dictionary

Charles Fillmore's books in my library include the "Metaphysical Bible Dictionary," "Atom Smashing Power of Mind," "Teach Us to Pray," and "The Revealing Word." Before the time of Anthony Robbins, Zig Zigler, Napoleon Hill or other motivational facilitators, Fillmore's words excited my imagination and stirred my soul. Let's not discuss how long ago that was.

Does a vein of independence in religious thought run through the American psyche? Our freedom sparks revelations and spiritual enlightenment. I have not made a major study of the development of various religious sects, but reviewing this book made me look up some of the folks living during the 19th century who took religious and philosophical theories and pursued them to their metaphysical ends, the nature of ultimate reality.

Is there a certain liberalism in American religion, pulling away from the restrictions of the European models, both catholic and protestant? Without researching more than ten minutes, I found nearly a dozen founders of spiritual groups. I cannot say they influenced each other, since everyone walked a lone path. Just think of these names, all within a hundred years of each other: William Miller (Adventist), Phineas Quimby (New Thought), Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science), Joseph Smith (Mormon), Charles Fillmore (Unity), Charles Russell (Jehovah's Witness), Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau (Transcendentalism), Helena Blavatsky (Theosophy), and I am sure I have not done justice to many others. What was going on?

Regarding the Dictionary itself, except where the etymology has become lost, the definitions have been traced back to their prototypical root ideas. This nontraditional feature gives us greater clarity for a profound understanding of the Scriptures. Charles Fillmore explained that proper names in Hebrew derive from abstract ideas with connotations that may be good or bad. The MBD explains this in the preface using the example of the word, "Cain." The root means "centralized power or accumulation." So it could mean benign rulership, lawful possession, or it could stand for despotism and extreme selfishness. Both the Hebrew and Egyptian tongues have been a source of confusion. (See Rosemary Clark's "Sacred Tradition in Ancient Egypt.") The idea in the Dictionary is to clarify as much as possible, even offering alternative meanings and spellings. It does not claim to be the final authority, but a stepping stone to a higher realm of spiritual consciousness, toward attainment of the mind "which was also in Christ Jesus."

For the metaphysical Bible student, two books are essential: Unity's Metaphysical Bible Dictionary and The Revealing Word. Whereas the Dictionary gives the metaphysical meaning of the names and geographical locations in the Bible, The Revealing Word provides the metaphysical meaning for concepts, words, animals, characteristics, and objects. It is an invaluable companion to the Dictionary. Want to get excited over the Bible? Purchase these two books and settle in for years of fascinating study.
