Customer Reviews:
Hardly HIS mutiny.......2001-08-23
Wherein Capt. Ramage expects prize moneys (from #7 DIAMOND), fits out a captured frigate, attends a court martial, hears of mutiny and a mad captain, reconnoiters the Spanish Main (I'd always wondered what that was) on an impossible task, cleverly incites a "mutiny," enters an enemy harbor and mans another ship, sets off some fireworks, is hit by a storm, and searches for a bit of treasure. Just another West Indies adventure taken in stride by Lord Ramage!
An interesting facet of these middle books in the series (this is #8, and they're not so good if read out of order), is how Dudley Pope is using Ramage's officers as commentators on the qualities of superior leadership, exemplified by the inspiring Capt. Ramage of course. Here it is finely calibrated anticipation of enemy responses and "planned surprises" for them (a la the real Lord Cochrane's prescriptions, again). Pope skillfully lays out Ramage's plans but never spoils them with anticipatory details: you still have to guess 'em. The Admiral back in Antigua makes a fine foil for Ramage's audacity. The concluding chapters are something of an anticlimax.
The action scenes race along, and the storm fearsomely roars--a sudden calderete cascading from the Venezuelan mountain valleys. Another wrap around cover art by Paul Wright (but the sail plan depicted doesn't make sense to me). One map of the eastern Caribbean ("Cannibal") Sea, that would have been good to have back in volume 3 already.

Then a wee bit of Scots magic makes her wish come true, and Raye finds herself pursued by the man of her dreams. What's a girl to do, except make the best of it? Breaking the Rules By B.J. McCall Getting in on with Jac Dancer would be a serious infraction of the rules for Unit Leader Ri Anzer. But Jac Dancer is a man of action and he's determined to bed his sexy boss. When Ri catches Dancer bathing beneath a waterfall, in the act of pleasuring what she's craved for two long years, the mission changes. The mission now is Dancer and Ri breaking the rules. Mike has a theory-an alien abduction. Jax doesn't believe that. As a reporter, he has to investigate what happened to them, and how. Dark-Pilot's Bride By Cricket Starr When her sister was selected to be the dinner of an outer-space vampire in exchange for supplies, Josia Ashen took her place assuming it would mean her death. Dimitri wants to make her status as his "bride" a reality, but a hasty promise to her sister may come back to haunt him if he can't earn Josia's love. The Windsday Club By Charlotte Boyett-Compo Six warriors come together to form a private club, meetings held twice a month. At the first meeting they play sports, gamble, or engage in whatever interests them. On the other meeting day, they give themselves up to the carnal delights of gluttony and lust. Gorging themselves with rich foods, heady wines, and willing women, they share all their pleasures amongst them. When their leader invites the beautiful Rosalyn to one of their gatherings, never does he imagine that love would strike him hard while they were each pleasuring the lady. Manacles of Love By Elizabeth Lapthorne Ma'ra has always had a thing for Paul, so when her cousin staked her "claim" on him, Ma'ra decided to take an off-planet job for a few years. When she returns, she is handed the perfect opportunity to have one night with Paul and fulfill every secret desire that has haunted her on her long travels. With her trusty voice-locked manacles, she can keep the control and indulge herself in every way. What she doesn't realize is that Paul has an agenda of his own. And even more fantasies to create than she does. When he turns the tables on her, it's hard to say who exactly has the control, and who is manacled by whom.

Hot Hot Hot and did I mention Hot?.......2005-07-07
This one has something for everyone - as long as you are not faint of heart. Charlotte Boyett-Coimpo's Windsday Club leaves you begging for more. I'll definately check out more of her Wind Series after this one!
Take your Breath Away.......2005-06-02
Six scorching stories of finding love make up this newest anthology from Ellora's Cave. Callista Arman starts us off with her story, The Changeling. This story of a married couple rekindling their romance will strike a chord with many readers. I loved the underlying theme, "be careful what you wish for," and found the marital relationship believable, yet still hot. The husband/hero came around in the end.
BJ McCall brings a powerful futuristic tale in Breaking the Rules. Love comes to two very strong willed individuals in this tale. I loved the fact that both individuals were too strong to break, but they did bend, and the take-charge attitude of the heroine really lit up the pages. A touching rescue brings the emotions full-circle with this story.
Abduction by Lynn Lafleur brings a new twist to the typical alien abduction story. These best friends suddenly know more about each other than they anticipate, and getting to the bottom of the mystery is only half the fun. I really liked this story of good friends who became more, and the "truth" behind the abduction is a touch of whimsy that brought a smile to my face.
An interesting vampire tale makes Dark-Pilot's Bride by Cricket Starr an enjoyable read. A not so young virgin is left to appease the dark-pilot, when she takes the place of her younger, and more beautiful, sister. Only the Dark-Pilot appreciates the rounded contours of a mature woman, and the two find themselves in an interesting tale.
Laughter reigns supreme in The Windsday Club by Charlotte Boyett-Compo. Six men get together for gambling and carousing each Windsday, and when one of them meets the woman of his dreams, he finds that men aren't the only one who can have fun behind closed doors. This story takes a menage to a new level, and brings intriguing possibilities to mind.
Manacles of Love by Elizabeth Lapthorne takes two complex characters and places them opposite each other. She only wants revenge. He's trying to bring down criminals. Yet when their plans collide, it sends sparks flying. The fact that each has always wanted the other brings additional layers of tension to the story.
The Cavemen on the cover may catch the eye, but it's the stories inside these beguiling anthologies which will keep you riveted long after the last page has been turned. The wide mix of stories in this volume creates a range of reading experiences. A great mix of stories, and all with a happy ending.
Awesome Talent and Heat.......2005-04-01
As one of the authors in this excellent anthology, I am honored to have my short story..The Windsday Club by Charlotte Boyett-Compo...among such talented writers. There is something for everyone here and you will be astounded at the imagination and heat lurking in the pages of this book. Legendary Tails I is getting rave reviews from all over so give it a try. I don't believe you'll regret it!

Marque and Reprisal is Nebula Award winner Elizabeth Moon's second novel about Kylara Vatta, starship captain in her family's interstellar shipping business. Fresh from war, Ky is trying to resume a normal trading schedule when an unknown enemy attacks her prestigous family. Though her family is large, Ky may be its only surviving member. But she cannot confirm this, for sabotage has cut off communications between star systems. And Ky has other problems. She's been turned into a privateer against her will. Her family's mysterious foe knows where she is, and is trying to kill her. And she has a bloody secret of her own.
Packed with action and intrigue, Marque and Reprisal and its prequel, Trading in Danger, are as strong and interesting as Elizabeth Moon's popular Serrano Legacy series, which also successfully combines hard SF, military SF, and adventure SF with interstellar and familial politics. The Kylara Vatta novels will please fans of the Serrano Legacy, Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan saga, David Weber's Honor Harrington series, and Robert A. Heinlein's juvenile novels. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Kylara Vatta, risk-taking, rule-breaking, can-do heroine of Trading in Danger, is back in business–the kind that’s anything but usual–in the new military science fiction adventure by ace action storyteller Elizabeth Moon.
The exciting military career she hoped for never got off the ground–but Ky Vatta ended up seeing plenty of combat when she took the helm of one of the commercial transport vessels in her family’s fleet . . . and steered it into a full-blown war. Now the lessons she learned in that trial by fire are about to pay off: because this time, the war has come to her. To be exact, someone unknown has launched a full-throttle offensive against Vatta Transport Ltd., Ky’s father’s interstellar shipping empire. In short order, most of Ky’s family is killed, and subsequent attacks sever vital lines of communication, leaving Ky fighting, in every sense, to survive.
Determined to identify the ruthless mystery enemy and avenge her family’s name, Ky needs not only firepower but information. And she gets both in spades–from the band of stranded mercenaries she hooks up with, from her black-sheep cousin, Stella, who’s been leading a secret life, and from Stella’s roguish ex-lover, Rafe. Together they struggle to penetrate the tangled web of political intrigue that’s wreaking havoc within InterStellar Communications, whose effective operation their own livelihoods–and perhaps lives–depend on.
But the infighting proves to be infectious, and it isn’t long before Ky’s hired military muscle are turning their suspicions on the enigmatic Rafe, whose wealth of knowledge about ISC’s clashing factions and startling new technologies has begun to make him smell like a rat . . . or a mole. With swift, violent destruction a very real possibility, the last thing Ky needs is a crew divided against itself–and she’s prepared to take whatever measures are necessary to ensure that Vatta stays in business, as well as in one piece.
What she’s not prepared for is the shocking truth behind the terror– and a confrontation with murderous treachery from a source as unexpected as it is unrelenting.

CHAPTER ONE
Kylara Vatta looked at the mass of paperwork from Belinta's Economic Development Bureau and sighed. The real life of a tradeship captain: paperwork and more paperwork, negotiation with shippers, customers, Customs officials. The life she hadn't wanted, when she chose to enter the Slotter Key Spaceforce Academy, and the life she had fallen back into when she was expelled. Boring. Mundane.
Not that her recent experiences in Sabine had been boring or mundane--terrifying was more like it--and no one would want another trip like that.
Except that she did. She remembered very clearly the rush of excitement, the soaring glee of the fight itself, the guilty delight when she'd killed Paison and Kristoffson. So either she wasn't sane or...or nothing. She thought of the diamonds tucked into her underwear drawer. Not enough to restore her old tub of a ship completely, but enough to take her to somewhere else, somewhere she could make the kind of life she really wanted. Perhaps the mercenaries would accept her violent tendencies; they'd offered a chance. Perhaps someone else. It would annoy her family, but not as much as the truth would hurt them.
No. She had to finish one job at least. Crew depended on her. The ship belonged to her family, as well, and she could not possibly earn enough to buy it away by the next stop or the next. She sighed again, signed another sheet, and stared at the next. All right, then. Take this old tub to Leonora, deliver that cargo, then to Lastway. If she couldn't finance a refit by then, return to the original plan and go home by commercial passenger ship. If she made enough profit, enough to do the refit, she could get that done and bring the ship back to Slotter Key, and then resign. Or--she stared into a distance far beyond her cabin bulkhead. She could send the ship back with someone else. Quincy, for instance, knew enough to run the ship herself.
In the long run, her family would be better off without her. If her father knew how she'd felt when she killed...no. She had had those nightmares, trying to explain to that gentle man, hoping for his understanding but seeing the horror in his face. Better the smothering, overprotective love that had annoyed her in their last conversation than that horror, that disgust, that rejection. If she went home, he would sense something; he would try to probe, try to get her to confide in him, and eventually he would wear her down. It would be worse than anything else that had happened, to have her father sorry she was ever born.
She should just go away. Years later, maybe, she might be able to explain it to him, and he might be able to accept it. Years might put a safe skin on the raw truth of what she was.
She worked her way through the rest of the forms, then decided to take them to the local postal drop herself. Belinta Station had few amenities, but a walk would be refreshing in itself.
"Quincy--I'm going to drop the paperwork off," she said into the ship's intercom.
"Find anything to load, or do you want us to start transferring what we left in storage?"
"I haven't found anything yet," Ky said. "I may have to go downside for that. Go on and load...see if you can get some of the station dockworkers to help with that. Usual rates and all."
She glanced at herself in the mirror and decided she was presentable enough. She needed a new uniform--the one she had left after Sabine no longer had the crisp, perfect tailoring her mother had paid for--but only if she was staying with Vatta. If she joined a mercenary company, she would wear its uniform; if she stayed independent, she'd have to find one of her own design. But to drop off forms to be transmitted to a bureaucracy, gray tunic and slacks should be sufficient. She clipped on the Belinta Station access pass.
Outside the ship, Belinta Station hardly bustled with activity.

Good light reading.......2007-03-03
Picked up Trading in Danger from a bargain bin a while ago and quite enjoyed it. Saw this sequel (Marque and Reprisal) in the bookshop and picked it up for a bit of light reading. Was pleasantly surprised - far better than the first book in the series, not much by away of plot but lots of good action, well-written, all in all it delivers what it promises. Don't expect a David Weber & Honor Harrington saga, but on the other hand I did have a hard time putting it down.
Introduction to great character.......2007-02-20
Shall I say, "Hard-luck Honor Harrington"? Strong, believable female character, lots of mystery in the fictional universe. I've read one more book in the series and still look forward to development.
Marque and Reprisal .......2007-02-11
Fast moving story with several quirks moving it along. Continuation of the 1st story of the central caracter and her family. Next story will be released in March 2006. I am impatient!
Interesting trilogy but middle book sags a bit..........2006-11-18
Ky Vatta, a daughter in a prominent interstellar shipping business who was previously kicked out of military school and captain of a freighter that was supposed to be scrapped, is stuck in port trying to get repairs and cargo to be on her way. Meanwhile, an unknown military force with the help of the planetary government wipes out the Vatta family compound on Slotter Key, killing most of the family leadership and destroying the corporate infrastructure. Aunt Grace Vatta, well known for making lethal fruitcakes and being an eccentric old woman, takes command of the family operations and dispatches Stella Vatta Constantin, the family's black sheep that no one takes seriously, to track down Ky to give her the administrative implant taken from Ky's dead father. Ky is forced to outwit assassins trying to kill her as she figures out what's going on, deal with banks and port authorities who want nothing to do with her or her ship, and equip her freighter for combat as she discovers in a package from a former military teacher that was delivered a few days before the attack that the Slotter Key government had issued her a letter of marque. After being re-united with Stella and a young nephew, she hires mercenaries to escort them and several other freighters as they proceed to repair the interstellar communication platforms that were disabled during the attacks as they make their way to another trading post. At one isolated platform, Ky confronts a renegade Vatta captain who sold out to the enemy and, after a difficult space battle that nearly destroys both ships, captures a more combat-ready freighter to pursue her enemies and rebuild the family business with the administrative implant that gives her insight to what's going on. The first book stood on its own while leaving open the possibility of another book following. This one sags as a middle book often does as I kept wondering how the story of this book would end since there's no indication early on what the resolution would be without the third book and it didn't have the same "I must read this in a day" impulse that I had while reading the first book.
She Still Does GREAT work!.......2006-11-10
Got name from a friend, tried Trading in Danger and enjoyed reading it...in two days mind you.....then tried the next step, same GREAT words!! Joy to read!

Review: Passenger's Side .......2007-06-14
Passenger's Side helps one to understand the need to put Jesus Christ in the driver's seat of their life. This book is full of real life examples and advice to help the reader learn how to take the passenger's seat and allow God control of life's steering wheel.
Beautiful writing style.......2006-07-21
A few months ago you might say I bottomed out in two different areas of my life. This happened within the same week. I think now that it was God's way of getting my attention. When my counselor suggested I read this book, I told her if it was going to beat me up it would only make me feel worse than I already did. How great it was to see that this book did the opposite. It picked me up at a time that I was very low. I also really enjoyed the way the author conveyed his message. Passengers Side was written in such a way that I felt like John Forosisky was with me having a real conversation about the Lord, and my own life. John has a soft touch that made me able to feel God's love.
Not Quite Right.......2006-06-23
I am giving this book 1 star because the author does emphasis the importance of salvation through Christ. But that is where the stars stop. This book is typical of the 'name it and claim it' view of the bible and of God. Instead, read Believing God by Beth Moore.
Blown Away !!!!!.......2006-06-13
I must confess and say that I received this book as a gift over 4 months ago and I never opened it until about mid May. I am perhaps set in my ways and seem to read only on occasion. And if I am being really honest, I didn't want to read something that might change me.
I am posting this review to say that I just finished Passengers Side for the second time. Not only was this book packed full of life altering information, it also gave me a wake-up call that I didn't even realize I needed. For years I have been in a weak routine of praying maybe a few times a month without even expecting that God would really hear me and maybe do something for me.
I have believed in God as long as can remember, but it never crossed my mind to ask Jesus to take control of my life and fix all the messes that I have. This morning I sat finishing chapter 15 as I waited for my car to be serviced. When I was done reading I just sat there and thought about how some things in my life have changed for the better. I'm so lucky God was patient with me and found a way to get this book in my hands. Things really are different now. And I do mean a wonderful different! My wife has read it too and now she tells people to read it every chance she gets.
If you are reading this review and wondering if you should read this book, I will tell you as a former skeptic that this book is like a gift from above!
I felt the Love !!.......2006-05-31
I shed tears more than once while reading this book. I have never read a book that caused me to feel loved like this. John Forosisky has the ability to convey things about Jesus in such a way that it does more than just touch my heart. It's hard to explain. I don't know if it's the presence of the Holy Spirit or just Gods love, but I have never felt so loved before. I know God has loved me from day one. But all I have done up to this point is to believe in God and occasionally go to church. It's not going to be that way for me any more.
I have and will continue to be recommending this book to everyone I care about.
God bless you John, and thank you for sharing so many personal things in this beautiful book of yours.
