Book Description
An acclaimed bestseller and international sensation, Patrick Suskind's classic novel provokes a terrifying examination of what happens when one man's indulgence in his greatest passion—his sense of smell—leads to murder.
In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift-an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brillance,
Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.
Translated from the German by John E. Woods.

Good and weird... Weird but very good!.......2007-09-21
I loved reading this book. I have read it more than a couple of times. It's a good read, especially if you are familiar with the world of perfumes.
Forgettable.......2007-09-14
I just don't get all the great reviews. The writing was good, but the story was lacking. The smells were better developed than the characters. Not only did the main character have no soul, but the book had no soul.
A Puddle Disguised as an Ocean .......2007-08-22
As a little girl more in love with the fashions of Morticia Addams than Barbie, who loved vampire stories and Shakespeare at age 10, my grandfather would often say to me "You don't have to be different to be different."
I wish someone had told this to Patrick Suskind.
I get the point: the soul of a man is not his elevation above his base animal instincts, but what man perceives as his soul is, in fact, nothing MORE than those promordial sensory intuitions. But this in and of itself can't carry a whole novella...
Sentence by sentence, I cannot argue that "Perfume" is not well written. The very sensual aromatic details were lovely even when putrid. My nose actually hurt when reading about Baldini trying to come up with the formula for the other perfumer's perfume. But well-written does not a solid story make. The story wove in and out of too many places, trying to make too many melodramatic points with a character without a soul and whose lack of a soul isn't especially interesting, either, so what's the appeal?
It reads like Victor Hugo and Anne Rice had a baby and sat it down at a type-writer as soon as it became an angsty teenager. The level of violence, physical detail, "profound struggling with the soul", etc. smacks of effort and strikes me as entirely masturbatory. I will believe a man who can smell his way through the dark, who kills women for their scents and then makes perfume out of them. But a perfume that induces orgies and cannibalism? No. Now you're just going out of your way to be tragic.
I feel these uber-Gothic details were thrown in as a pseudo-intellectual grab at being beautifully horrific. Here's the thing, though: it's not beautifully horrific if you TRY to make it so.
Good book.......2007-07-28
An solid book, relatively quick and easy to read. The reader experiances the life story of a serial killer (the main character) with very...interesting....motivations. By the end you wish for him to be caught and stopped, yet at the same time, you want to escape to see if his theory is true.
Wierd, Wierd, Wierd!.......2007-07-27
If you like something a litle 'different' and than this is for you.
A little morbid towards the end....
Really makes you smell everything after you read this.

Women never said no to the dashing Lord Matthew Weston and he never said no to them. But this was the first time he found one tempting enough to impetuously say "I do." Was it any wonder he awoke to discover her gone? And when Matthew learned the enchanting creature he'd married was of royal blood -- and would abandon their marriage bed without a second thought -- he vowed to put her out of his life forever.
But even a princess makes mistakes. And now Tatiana's back, asking for the kind of help only he can give her. But is his assistance all she wants or are there secrets the willful royal is keeping from him? Matthew may well lend her his hand but he'll never again give her his heart. Still, he's determined to tame the green-eyed beauty and change her from a perfect princess to his passionate bride.

Love a princess..........2006-09-27
I admit that I love any plot with princes or princesses and the story of the fabled Avalonia drew me in from the first book of the series. I agree with the other reviews that the first half of the book dragged. Normally, I read through my lunch hour and have a hard time putting a book down and getting back to work. I didn't have a hard time doing that with this book until the second day. Once I was past the half-way mark, I was finally intrigued. I was worried that Ms. Alexander would disappoint me, but she did not. Read through this book and I promise the end will be worth it.
Pure fair tale enjoyment !.......2006-02-15
`Her highness my wife' by Victoria Alexander is fun historical novel based around 1819. Tatiana princess of Avalonia talks Lord Matthew to help her find the lost jewels of Avalonia. The princess and Lord has brief affair the prior year and now they are thrown back together to solve this mystery. Both the main characters are deep and rich with great directness in their communication. I would recommend this book and `When We Meet' by Victoria Alexander and Some Enchanted Evening by Christina Dodd.
Very slow....pick up at the end but not by much.......2005-10-05
Her Highness, My Wife is not my favorite book. It drags on and on. It took me a week and a half to finish it. It usably read a book in 2 to 3 days. I really didn't like Princess Tatiana and really couldn't see what Matt saw in her expect for lust. They really didn't have much in common. She was bitchy to him when he brought up any of her past bad behavior or her lies. I would have like to slap her. Matt took her back rather quick after she treated him badly. As for the mystery and plot twists I like a good mystery and plot twists in my books romance or other wise but I need more romance than this book gave. I need to believe the hero and heroine belong together to enjoy a book. The hero is wonderful but that wasn't enough to hold this book together.
Try When We Meet Again by Victoria Alexander it a much better written book.
You will either love it or hate it. No middle ground........2004-03-04
While in Paris Lord Matthew "Matt" Weston met and married the woman of his dreams. Yet only a few hours later she left him, leaving behind a letter that she would deal with the legalities. He had not known her REAL name or title. He only knew how much he loved her. After fifteen months, she walked back into his life.
She was Princess Tatianna Marguerite Nadia Pruzinsky of the Kingdom of Greater Avalonia, and she needed his help. Tat still loved Matt. However, she felt she HAD to leave him so she could finish fulfilling her royal duties. She planned to return to him someday, if he would still have her, once her duties were completed. For now, she needed him to escort her around London as his wife. As Lady Matthew she could retrace the steps of Aunt Sophia. Tat told him that she was writing the history of the royal family. It was obvious he did not believe her. As his wife, doors would be open for her to speak with those who knew Sophia, decades ago. The truth of what Tat was up to was kept secret. Tat was searching for something that she felt MUST be found before she could return to Matt forever.
*** I found this story to be complicated. Several sub-plots ran simultaneously, such as, the Princess Valentina being in England, some history of ballooning (aerostats), and some jewels. That was only a few of them. About half into the book, however, things began to come together. I, as the reader, got a clearer picture of what was REALLY going on. Romance between the two main characters seemed stilted until this point.
The second half of the book was filled with perils and romance! I could not pull myself away from it all. Everything seemed to speed up and I simply HAD to know what was going to happen in the next chapter! I admit that much of the information that the first half of the book was needed for the reader to fully understand the seriousness of the plot. Yet I feel many readers will not be able to wait so long for all the pieces to come together.
As a reviewer, I must say that I feel the first half of this book seemed to drag. The second half was non-stop. Somehow I believe reviews will be mixed on this tale. This story you will either love or hate. No middle ground. ***

Her High and mighty.......2004-01-28
I have to start by saying I adored this hero. Matthew Weston is a man with regrets and fears, but he is trying to make it on his own. He is also trying desperately to forget his short lived marriage to the Princess Tatiana. A woman who seems put out by the fact that William is angry that she walked out. She is also a woman who trust few and has been scorned in the past.
The story starts a bit slow but eventually picks up momentum. The hardest part of the book for me to take was the princess, who by all accounts is used to getting her way. But her apology for leaving her husband with little more then a note, in the middle of the night, leaves a lot to be desired. She even goes as far to demand to know why he didn't follow her. My thought, you walked out on him. HMMMM.
Our Heroine does eventually redeem herself and by the end is highly likable and to my thinking finally deserving of our hero. The story also has some interesting twists that keep the action rising, though the reader will figure most of it out quickly.
If you like Victoria Alexander then you will enjoy this one; if this is your first attempt with this Author I would start with one of her other works first.

Book Description
Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-06-17
This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.
Natural Healing.......2007-05-26
This book is full of several remedies for many different illnesses, problems, etc...
Highly recommended.
Another winner from Amy.......2005-07-22
Amy has written yet another good book for pet owners. As the trend in natural healing continues, good resources such as this book, The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and The Allergy Solution for Dogs serve as important sources of information for pet owners. Read this book and start learning how you can work with your doctor to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Saving my dog's life.......2005-07-06
A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.
Couldn't Put it Down................2002-06-25
I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!

Customer Reviews:
People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

I'll keep this short, but I must say that I found this book very well laid out both in words and pictures. Worth buying!!!
A little dry.......2001-07-17
This book somehow gets lost in the space between entertainment and education. It's too dry to be entertaining, unless you are just dying to find out what an SCBA is. And it's really too light to be of any use for education. Make up your mind about what you want and go for either "Fighting Fire" by Caroline Paul (entertainment) or "Essentials of Fire Fighting" for educational use.

A fun book for children, written in poetry form........2006-10-02
"If Dinosaurs Were Cats and Dogs" by Colin McNaughton, is a delightful imaginative piece of whimsy. The narrator--bedecked in short pants, sneakers, bowtie and a hot-air-balloon hat--says goodbye to his orange tabby and lifts off to "distant shores, / Where tiny snails are as big as whales / And cats are big as dinosaurs."
A fun read, with a light taste of "Where's Waldo," this is sure to be a small child's favorite. I recommend it for beginning readers who will enjoy the lively colorful illustrations, as well as advanced readers who with active imaginations.

Customer Reviews:
The Inestimable Value of Rediscovering the Wisdom of the Heart.......2007-08-30
This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in meditation and contemplation.
The author is an Episcopal priest and retreat leader, but her message and her sources stretch well beyond the Christian world.
The book begins with a challenging forward by Thomas Moore. Who asks us to challenge some of the assumptions built powerfully into he roots of the modern world: that the best - perhaps only - way to understand something is to dissect it; that standardized education is the best way to educate the young and that prisons are an effective way to deal with crime. Each is questionable.
Cynthia takes these questions and many others in this beautifully written and satisfying book.
As an example, she takes the words:
Individual
Freedom
Happiness
Surrender
Each is deeply charged with meaning in our Western culture. The same words also have deep meanings in our spiritual heritage. The interesting thing is that in the two realms the words have diametrically opposite meanings.
It is very valuable to see and understand this: many people want to embark upon their spiritual journey without knowing what it entails. I once saw a man who came to an introductory presentation by a well-known teacher. He got very upset when it was suggested that the work would need some sacrifice, discipline and effort. He was not being asked to give a lot of money to the teacher, in fact quite the opposite. But he thought that the spiritual path was a shortcut for getting more "stuff." Cynthia demonstrates the fallacy of this belief.
She also shows that the genuine spiritual path is available to anyone who is prepared to dedicate a little time to it. And "little" is the operative word, and one of the reasons that I so like this book She points out quite correctly that meditation or contemplation should start with a few minutes wherever you are. I was also thrilled to see someone else advocate the value of practicing surrender wherever you find yourself: standing in line or sitting in traffic is a good place to start.
This is a short but deep and inspiring book that I recommend very highly.
Clarity, Depth and, yes, Wisdom.......2006-03-31
An Episcopal priest myself, time and again while reading "The Wisdom Way of Knowing" I wanted to jump up, rejoice and exclaim, "Yes, this is what I've come to about Christianity after all these years!" It was like drinking draughts of crystal clear water. With a graceful touch, the author peels back layer after layer of accretions to the faith to leave one close to the pulsing heart of the tradition. She obviously lives this path and warrants the name "teacher." Do read this book. And practice the prayer and path to which it points. (Couldn't resist a little sermon.)
The Wisdom Way of Knowing: Reclaiming An Ancient Tradition to Awaken the Heart.......2005-09-22
Cynthia Bourgeault has a wonderful writing style that explains complicated ideas in a very easy-to-understand manner. This book is a must read for people interested in deepening their personal spirituality. A gifted writer who obviously is deeply spiritual helps those of us seeking find the path.
Freedom and Surrender.......2004-03-13
I have read Cynthia Bourgeault's THE WISDOM WAY OF KNOWING five times now. From start to finish, I find what I always find in her writing - the rich, inner tradition of Christianity which is so universally appealing. I have probably read her chapter on Freedom and Surrender ten times, and I quote my favorite lines, "Spirituality at its no-frills simplest is learning not to do anything in a state of internal brace. It is never worth the cost."
short but terrific.......2004-02-07
If you are a student of the Gnosis and want to learn more about it, and about mysticism within the Western Wisdom traditions, this is as good a place to start as anything. Unlike some other literature of this kind of subject, it is clear, lucid and very readable. The author is an ordained Episcopal priest, but esoteric Christianity is to her I believe a piece of a bigger puzzle, and a frame of reference in particular. She quotes a bit from other enlightened authors, past and present, such as Jakob Boehme. There is also an excellent recommended reading list for further study.
The book is short but covers a great deal of ground in little time, so kudos here for the editing.
Recommended with enthusiasm.
