Book Description

Patty Jane Dobbin should have known better than to marry a man as gorgeous as Thor Rolvaag, but she was too smitten to think twice. Yet nine months into their marriage, with a baby on the way, Thor is gone. It's a good thing Patty Jane has her irrepressible sister, Harriet, to rely on. For it's been said that a fine haircut can cure any number of ills, and before long the Minnesota sisters have opened a neighborhood beauty parlor complete with live harp music and an endless supply of delicious Norwegian baked goods. It's a wonderful, warmhearted place where you can count on good friends, lots of laughter, tears, and comfort when you need it--and the unmistakable scent of somebody getting a permanent wave. . . .

3 out of 5 stars Sweet yet not totally fulfilling.......2007-06-11

This book was sweet, but it lacked depth. I cared about the Dobbin sister's, but I never felt that I was fully sucked into their lives or could relate with them. Also many of the MN referances were lost on me or I found to be completely implausible--and I've lived in MN nearly all my life. I've heard that people say "Oufda"--but what the heck is "oufda mayda"?? For cripes sake ;-) Overall, it was a fun summer read.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2007-01-09

Absolutely Delightful! So much better than ANGRY HOUSEWIVES EATING BON BONS and YOUR OASIS ON FLAME LAKE. You can't lose yourself in those two books the way you can in this one. Multi-faceted characters also make this book so much better. I liked everyone so much I wish I knew them. Joy mixed with heartache. This book is such a pleasure!

4 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-01-04

I could relate to that story in many ways. It was fun and nostalgic to read.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Book.......2006-08-11

This book was perfect. I enjoyed all of it. I liked the family relationships, the funny moments, the sad moments, everything. This book is a real treat.

4 out of 5 stars Patty Jane's House of Curl.......2006-07-28

This is my first book by this author annd it was not what I expected. I was pulled into their lives and needed to know how it all turned out. I was expecting a fluff book but got so much more. I will defintely read another book by this author.

Bestselling author Tracie Peterson continues her saga of life and love in the rugged Alaskan Territory with the second volume of the ALASKAN QUEST series. When Pinkerton agent Helaina Beecham's obsession with capturing a dangerous fugitive dulls her judgment, she is kidnapped and carried off into the wilderness just as an early winter is approaching. Now her only hope is that Jacob Barringer--the man who has captured her heart--will find her before it is too late. (Alaskan Quest Book 2)

5 out of 5 stars A "Stay up late to keep Reading" kind of book........2007-02-10

Tracy's books are very interesting and at the same time very relaxing to read. For a while you can escape the cares of your world and travel and experience another world. One feels they know the people she writes about in her stories as personal friends. I have enjoyed all of her books that I have read and plan to purchase all of her books as time go by.

5 out of 5 stars Cold yet heartwarming.......2006-12-21

Tracie Peterson's Alaskan Quest series reintroduces us to Jacob and Leah Barringer, first seen as children in her Yukon Quest series. Now grown up and independent adults, the two still live up in Alaska and have come to adore their new home. In Under the Northern Lights, the second book in the series, Leah has just married Jayce Kincaid and is ready to settle down and have a quiet life with him. Unfortunately for her, Jayce's evil twin brother Chase kidnaps her and Helaina Beecher, the Pinkerton agent searching for Chase. While the two women have to fight for survival against Chase, Jayce and Jacob go out to search for the women they love in hopes of rescuing them. When something happens that nearly destroys Leah, the four have to to depend on faith in order to move on.

I love seeing characters reappear in books. I wanted to know what happened to Jacob and Leah at the close of the Yukon Quest series when they were children. Now as their adults, the pair have had to share their own hardships and triumphs. Alaska is always a great setting because it's so vast and big and like Hawaii, familiar yet different at the same time. I'm glad that Helaina's character changes throughout the story. In the first book, she is very stubborn and headstrong because she's trying to prove to herself and others that she can survive on her own. In this book, Leah has to force her to realize that finding Chase is not the most important thing in the world. I also felt sorry for Leah with what she went through. The turn of the events at the end though are rather interesting and I bet her and Jayce would have appreciated modern technology for their situation! She rightly feels bitter and I believe that she is allowed to. The only thing I didn't like was she felt guilty over feeling bitter but I feel that in her situation she had an absolute right to. I love when I feel like I'm drawn into a book and that happened several times while reading this one. I actually felt cold when reading certain scenes and had to get a blanket. Recommended for Peterson fans and anyone who enjoys a good historical fiction story.

                  4 out of 5 stars Alaskan Adventure.......2006-11-05

This is a great story about how life is lived in the villages of Alaska. It has suspense, and holds your interest. I can't wait to read the next book. Great series

4 out of 5 stars Start with book one!.......2006-08-23

Under The Northern Lights is the second in the Alaskan Quest trilogy by Tracie Peterson, and it picks up where book one, Summer of the Midnight Sun, ended

Leah Kincaid is kidnapped by her husband's twin brother, Chase Kincaid. Chase is also holding Helaina Beecham prisoner--and Helaina had been given the task of arresting Chase. Leah's husband, Jayce, and her brother, Jacob, follow the fugitive and his captives. Leah is able to escape with Helaina, leaving Chase behind in the frozen Alaskan landscape.

Jacob is drawn to Helaina, but because she doesn't share his faith, he fights his attraction. Helaina is struggling with her own issues, including the deaths of several family members and her pledge to bring Chase to justice. By the time she realizes her feelings for both Jacob and Alaska, it may be too late.

Under The Northern Lights is well written and the Alaska territory of the early 20th century is as large a character as Leah and Jayce are. The cold and whiteout conditions are vivid; you can smell the seal and caribou cooking over the fire and hear the yip of the eager sled dogs.

It was difficult for me to follow the story, having not read the first installment. I didn't know what Chase or Helaina had done to engender the other character's animosity. Knowing their history would have added to my enjoyment of the novel.

Under The Northern Lights ends on a cliffhanger and I expect the next installment will need books one and two to put the events in context. There are many arguments both for and against unresolved endings. It's been said that the ending of one book sells the next one. If you enjoy being left dangling, you can pick this book up and enjoy it. If you need events in chronological order, make sure you start with book one, Summer of the Midnight Sun. Then read Under the Northern Lights, and be ready to follow it with the final installment, Whispers of Winter.

Armchair Interviews says: A good book that would be made better if the reader starts with the first in the series as the second book doesn't make many things clear to a new reader.

5 out of 5 stars Super Addition to Series.......2006-08-09

In her second book of the `Alaskan Quest' series Peterson continues the saga of the Barringer siblings, Leah and Jacob, in an exciting entry that will stand completely alone.

After a lengthy journey traversing the Alaskan territory newlywed Leah Barringer Kincaid walks into her home to discover her husband's identical twin brother Chase, a murder, whom both her husband and brother are chasing. Kidnapped by Chase who preys on Leah's protective instincts she is reunited with the insufferable Pinkerton Agent Helaina Beecham whom Chase had already kidnapped. Leah wants only to escape but Helaina's focus is solely on bringing Chase to justice. When Helaina falls critically ill, Leah attempts to reason with Chase in trying to bring him to an understanding of her loving God but after Chase sexually assaults Leah even her faith in God in letting such a monstrous thing happen to her is severely tested. Partly blaming Helaina for all the bad things that happened to her, Leah's faith in God, her rage over the injustice done her and her battle for vengeance vs. forgiveness would be tested in innumerable ways as would her husband Jayce as he continues the pursuit of his brother.

Later as Helaina recovers, she begins to gain a better understanding of the damage done by her impulsive and selfish behavior has caused to the people around her. With gentle guidance from Jacob Helaina comes to discover an inner strength and a new spiritual awareness of God. Even more so, Helaina would find herself tested as she realized that Jacob was a man worth fighting for when she learned she must find and save him from a cruel Alaskan `iced-in' winter.

Tracie Peterson continues to gift her fans with incredibly inspiring stories of life and love weaving adventure, excitement, and highly charged emotional examples of Christian faith into a fully robust tale that never slows down. Without being overly preachy she presents excellent scenarios that easily guide the reader with food for thought in dealing with life, while seeking reassurances that the paths one takes are the right choice for them. Her stories make you feel that you always have a place and source to turn both in joy and sorrow for strength and sustenance. In this new series she combines excellent writing, superb research, and fabulous adventures in an incredible frontier setting to add zest to the excitement and adventure of living in the frozen wastelands of Alsaka. Fans of Peterson should be thrilled with this latest entry in the Alaskan Quest series again leaving you with a cliff-hanger and wishing you didn't have to wait so long for the next entry to come!

                                    1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2006-06-28

I have two serious gripes with this book (and I shan't bother with the rest of the series at all).

                                    1. The writing is extremely weak. In places the authors manage a few quips worth a chuckle, but their command of the English novel is almost nonexistant. Drake and Flint barely let their characters speak for themselves, and rely instead of bald statement of the characters' attributes. On the other hand, this may be a good thing, as their dialogue more resembles a group of adolescents hanging than anything else I can think of. I have to assume that this is Flint's influence, since Drake, while not a particularly good writer, is generally a cut above this.

                                    2. Neither of the authors is up to imagining anything are fascinating and convoluted as the real tale of Belisarius's life. They capture absolutely zero of the flavor of the age, and what they do manage to put in (such as Anastasius's hidden love of philosophy) verges on the rediculous. The book seems the more absurd since there exist two other documents that are far more interesting: Procopius (who does put in an appearance in the book) wrote "A Secret History" about Belisarius, Antonina, the emporer and empress, and those around him, which is rather obscene, and considered to be largely a work of revenge for not being showered with sufficient honors; Robert Graves, one of the 20th century's finest historical novelists and a good poet to boot, produced a work called "Count Belisarius" which is beautifully written, compelling, and extremely sensitive to historical detail (Graves's hallmark).

5 out of 5 stars First of a great series !.......2004-06-17

Great, great, great book. I especially enjoy a great series since I sometimes read 2 to 3 books a week. Very engaging, the characters are real and well developed, the plot is very interesting. I generally do not go in for alternate history but this one draws me in for some reason.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Divergence in Time.......2003-11-28

An Oblique Approach is the first novel in the Belisarius series. Byzantium was the Empire of Rome in the East, ruled at this time by Emperor Justinian. A former Thracian peasant, Justinian had selected a minor Thracian noble, Belisarius, to be his bodyguard and then later to head the army facing their Medean foe. While Belisarius was not the Emperor's friend (for Justinian had no friends), they respected each other and Belisarius' wife Antonia was a close friend of the Empress Theodora.

When Belisarius was traveling to assume command the army at Daras, the monk Michael of Macedonia and Anthony Cassian, the local bishop, came to his new house in Aleppo, bringing a strange object found by Michael within his cave in the desert. A faceted crystal that seemed to form and reform, they said that it had brought visions to their minds when they held it and they urged Belisarius to take it into his own hands. When it was passed to him, the crystal flared into light and flooded his mind with visions.

The crystal could induce visions and feelings, but was mostly unable to communicate directly. The visions showed a future in which the Malwa empire of northern India conquered all the known world and induced feelings of dread and despair. But all who held the crystal also felt certain that the future shown and felt was not necessarily the only possible future. The crystal had come to enlist Belisarius himself in an effort to preclude this bitter future in favor of one more consistent with their own desires and inclinations.

While the exhausted crystal quietly regained its strength, the human party formed a conspiracy to counter the evil plans of the Malwa. Deciding to keep the secret among themselves for a time, they arranged for a location to build a secret arsenal and weapons project on property controlled by Anthony. They also agreed that Anthony would arrange for the services of John of Rhodes, a clever ex-naval officer, as the head of the project.

Belisarius had to leave the conspiracy in the others' hands while he assumed command of the army in Daras. The prior commander, Libelarius, had left his army understrength and riddled with corruption, so weeding out the rot was Belisarius' first task. Then he had to rebuild his command structure and replace those struck from the roles.

Belsarius was charged with building a fort near the border as a deliberate provocation of the Persians, but Belisarius needed to conclude the campaign quickly in order to get back to the conspiracy. Once the fort was finished, he arranged for the Army of Lebanon under its two generals, Bouzes and Coutzes, to join with him against the Persians. Then he baited Bouzes and Coutzes with news of a Persian army pay chest and sent the Persian commander a nasty note. Thereafter, he waited for the afternoon wind to blow from the west.

This story depicts an intervention from the future followed by a counter-intervention from the same era. The intervention itself is not described in this volume, but the crystal represents the counterforce. The first portion of the story consists mainly of clearing the decks to allow the conspirators to investigate the real enemy, which could only be done in India by Belisarius himself.

Belisarius does have one large advantage in that his bucellarii, his personal guard, are past masters of covert operations. He doesn't have to hire or acquire specialists, but only has to say who will be left behind. He gains another asset in Irene Macrembolitissa, spymaster for his friend, and fellow general, Sittas.

A reviewer complains that this is a rehash of the General series, but does not seem to understand that that series was loosely based on the historical actions of the real live Belisarius. Another reviewer frets that Belisarius is too perfect, yet fails to note the respect given to the actual general by military historians. Belisarius was only a man, but clearly an unusual man in many respects and nothing in this novel up to the initial visit by Michael and Anthony is inconsistent with known historical facts.

Still another reviewer accused the authors of poor characterization, citing the similar sense of humor among all the military personnel. Interesting enough, that observation is not new, having been made by many others down through the centuries. Professional military men (and women, for that matter) have an ironical and sometimes morbid sense of humor, maybe due to their close association with death and dying. Drake has first-hand knowledge of that sense of humor!

This story sets the stage for the series and tells of the initial efforts of the conspirators. It contains enough battles, raids, and assorted mayhem for any two other books. And it is just getting started.

Highly recommended for Drake & Flint fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alternate wars and political intrigue.

2 out of 5 stars mutter mutter mutter, grumble grumble grumble.......2003-04-07

I'm going to review the entire series, rather than only the first book. Hopefully it will help if some are prepared for what's ahead.

Drake and Flint have killed this series for me with their childish sense of humor.

Jokes that were only 'cute' when they first appeared (occasianally) in An Oblique Approach, are downright nauseating when they are FEATURED in the rest of the series. Every character--be they Thracian, Greek, Persian, or Indian--has an identical sense of irony and sarcasm, and Drake and Flint bash you over the head with it like a cataphract wielding a cudgel. Fer cryin' out loud, even the friggin CRYSTAL sports a sense of humor (I use the term loosely) that is identical to every other character in the series!

Half-way through In The Heart Of Darkness I was rolling my eyes at the overly-pithy, self-aware wit that was creeping up more often. By the end of Destiny's Shield, I was groaning audibly.

The characters are all cookie-cutter: You've got a couple of hard-as-nails hookers with hearts of gold; some grizzled old soldiers with unfailing loyalty to their general; some enemy generals that just drip honor (so you know they'll be switching sides before it's all over); and the vile, honorless, and militarily incompetent enemy generals who howl at the guile and cunning of Belisarius, then ignore the counsel of talented underlings who have spotted his traps.

The battles are pretty entertaining, strategically, but they are all routes. There is never a sense of danger, that the battle could go either way but for the brilliant battlefield maneuvering of Belisarius.

All in all, An Oblique Approach was a pretty darn good book. The account of Princess Shakuntala's rescue was particularly well written. However, I'm going to do something I rarely do--stop reading a series before it's over. I just can't read "trudge trudge trudge" and "mutter mutter mutter" anymore! Add to that the drunken conversations where the only point seems to be to make you laugh at the way people mispornun... mipsunorn... er, hic, mispronounce words when inebriated, and I've had enough.

                                    Mutter mutter mutter.

                                    Grumble grumble grumble.

5 out of 5 stars "Deadly with a sword is Belisarius".......2003-01-07

I first came upon this book when I saw it featured in the free library at the Baen website along with its sister books, "Heart of Darkness" and "Destiny's Shield". Since it was free I took a gander and was immediately hooked. The first book effectively introduces a mystery of grand proportions. In the world of 6th century Rome, Belisarius is a character that is not what we would expect of a Roman general. We expect ruthlessness and atrocities and looting, all the characteristics of a barbaric time in our history. However, what I saw was something which I could truly admire and respect. Belisarius has a fiendish mind for strategy and tactics, combined with that gift is a high code of honor and ethics. He will not stand helplessly and watch evil being committed in his world. He will not "compromise" with his lessors. And he definitly will not be defeated by a bunch of "savages" from India. Read the book based upon Belisarius' character alone. Fortunatly that's not all the reasons why you should read it.

The story is set in authentic historical context in the time of Justinia, Emperor of Rome. However, future is melded into the past. A device of unfathomable complexity and intelligence is sent from the future to protect history. It chooses Belisarius as its sole avatar. Belisarius will see the future and the possible future that will be, if he does not act. That future results in a world aflame with agony, and Belisarius will do whatever in his power to prevent that future to exist. Whatever it takes, he will do, and he will do it with the same standards of decency, honor, and ruthlessness as he has defeated all his enemies with. Belisarius will bring into being weapons powered by gunpowder, rockets and grenades that shatter human flesh. Technologies of the future will be retrofitted to fit with the technological base of Rome. The enemy, indeed the enemy of all civilization, the barbarians will meet their match. The barbarians have numerical superiority but their ethics allow them only to use numbers and not elite troops like the Roman's cataphracts. Eric Flint brings his own wry humor into the mix, that is also a reason to read the book. The enemy will be brought down by brilliantly described combat but the dialogue of the characters will show wit, humor, and intelligence to the reader. Absolutely one of the most enjoyable series I have ever read. The series will span the war with the Malwa barbarians, this book will feature the beginnings of that war.

Surya Das is like a Buddhist Johnny Appleseed, galavanting across the countryside, planting seeds of spirituality in bare patches of ground. He believes that we are all fertile soil for cultivating the sacred in everyday life. "We all have spiritual DNA," he says. In Awakening to the Sacred, Surya Das heightens his efforts to increase the planet's spirituality quotient by teaching people how to take advantage of their own spiritual resources. Whether Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or atheist, we can all enhance our spiritual side. Certainly meditating is a good way, and there's no one better to teach us than this limpid lama. But even more familiar activities can help, like praying, creating a spiritual notebook, or reading spiritual books--even gardening and walking count. Surya Das excels at demystifying the mystical and urges the reader to capitalize on resources closest at hand. No need to look too far when we can draw inspiration and practices from our own traditions. So take that apple seed, thumb through Awakening to the Sacred, and nourish those precious roots of spirituality. --Brian Bruya

5 out of 5 stars Practical Spirituality At Its Best.......2007-03-19

The American-born author of this fine book is a Lama in the Dzogchen lineage of Tibet. He was raised in the Jewish faith, and his unique background makes him an especially lucid exponent of the principles of Tibetan Buddhism for Westerners steeped in Judeo-Christian beliefs and principles.

Lama Surya Das has been engaged in spiritual studies for over thirty years and sat at the feet of a number of teachers in Asia. He has written several books, and this one is a particularly good introduction to the spiritual life. Though the emphasis is on the philosophy and practices of Buddhism, some of the descriptions of the spiritual path and the problems that many of us encounter, can be applied for people working in other traditions. The strongest points of the book and of Lama Surya Das' teachings in general, are his suggestions for incorporating a sense of the sacred while living an active Western lifestyle. So often we see writers and teachers extolling the virtues of a spiritual path that is not compatible with a family life and career. I once knew an excellent teacher who had some extraordinary insights. He insisted that anyone who came to learn from him should give up his or her home, family and career. He did not have that many takers.

This book is far more realistic. The chapters are short, pithy and deal with many of the more common problems that we might run into as we walk the spiritual path. They include the practicalities of the establishing a regular practice as well as issues like the emergence of the dark side of our nature as we meditate.

There are numerous suggestions for meditation, prayer and chanting. Many can be found elsewhere, but what sets this book apart is that all the practices are grounded in daily life.

The book is very engagingly written: clear, insightful, and even some humor. This is one of my top ten favorite books on practical spirituality. Highly recommended.

This book is not to be missed by those seeking insight into the nature of reality and life. It's not often that spiritual leaders communicate in plain, intelligent, and profound ways that incorporate common sense and mystical insight.
